3) sansa & alicent. they are so me
4) all of the green kids

Thoughts about the supposed direction Rhaena's storyline is going in Hotd and the apparent Nettles erasure? Disappointing but... I can sort of see where they could take it? Idk... looking at grrm's posts in hindsight kinda makes me even more disappointed if he is as well (he just can't get his adaptations right atp but idk)
Well. Pre-ep7, we're still pending any Rhaena-Sheepstealer bonding, but I'm basically 😑🫠 about the rumors. (I dislike borrowing trouble, I'm not even sure how many of the rumors are true -- actually I'm pretty sure many of these supposed "leaks" are straight up lies -- and yet. Still *disgruntled meh* and *"we're all fine-everyone's fine here" dread*.) Rhaena is one of my more beloved F&B characters (it's the Sansa parallels, I can't help myself), and Nettles has been a super fave since TPATQ and TWOIAF. (Particularly TWOIAF, since the Burned Men fire-witch reveal; heck, I think my little dollmaker is still one of the few fanarts of Nettles in the mountains.)
I mean, sure, I understand that Rhaena's book storyline during the Dance, where she's offpage from basically the start of the war until nearly the end of it, socializing in the Vale and waiting for her egg to hatch, would be difficult to adapt in an action-oriented visuals-oriented television show. (Like Rhaenyra this season sure isn't just catatonically crying from Luke's death until Jace's.) And I'm glad Rhaena's getting more to do, and I'm glad it's directly addressing her feeling slighted and ignored by her family since she doesn't have a dragon. However...
I do not want Rhaena merged into one character with Nettles! I do not want Rhaena to have Sheepstealer and not her hope-for-the-future (doomed hope, and yet) baby dragon Morning, that hatched for her. Also note how pink Morning, worn as a fashion accessory, so suited Rhaena's coquette personality vs her sporty, adventurous twin sister... I mean, I've said before, I understand adaptations can be different, this still wouldn't make HOTD even close to a "loose adaptation".* But I do not want this adaptation to lose Rhaena's personality that I loved.
Or for that matter, to lose Nettles's character, and her importance to the themes and worldbuilding of ASOIAF. (See also.) And her importance to the plot -- but god knows, they're doing all sorts of things with Daemon and Rhaenyra on this show, toxic romance or what have you, who knows if once Daemon reaches his emotional breakthrough or whatever at Harrenhal this season, if they want to backslide him into a cheating plot in S3 while Daemon is again stuck in a castle for months.** Nevertheless, I'd be deeply disappointed to lose scenes like "as well as her dragon, the girl had taken to riding Daemon", or the last morning in Maidenpool scene... and um, you can't really fit Rhaena in there, or if you did, it would certainly put the lie to the ship denialists' "he just treated her like a father, platonically bathing naked together!" (Also the pretty blatant fake S3 leaks including one where Rhaenyra decides Rhaena has betrayed her... are pretty blatantly fake, sorry.)
And then there would be the frankly racist erasure of the one book black character. "Oh but the show made the Velaryons black, so it's not erasing, it's adding more!" No, sorry. (1) I was and am all for adding more racial diversity to the show and especially to Valyrians, but face it, when you take the book's secondary character Velaryons, two who get killed off early and are portrayed as lesser to the "true" Daemon/Rhaenyra marriage, and make them black, you've already done a lot of hinky damage there. (2) What, it's that hard to write three distinct black girls with very different personalities and one from an incredibly different background? I don't see Addam and Alyn getting merged. I don't see Aemond and Daeron getting merged. I don't see Hugh and Ulf getting merged. But I'm not really one to speak here, for this particular discussion I'd point you to @ride-thedragon and @venusintheblindspots-blog and @chrkrose, among others, they have many many posts on this subject in far greater detail and better argued than mine.
OK, so. I still have hope that Nettles -- even if not cast for this season (sorry y'all, that extra is an extra) -- may appear next season, and all this worry will turn out to be a tempest in a teapot. Per last report from the HOTD panel at SDCC, the rumor of Rhaena and Sheepstealer definitely doesn't happen in ep 7, though, yes, there's one episode after. And if it does happen... I'll be strongly disappointed. Deeply, deeply disappointed, and probably far more suspicious of future adaptational changes. But, for me at least, it's not a dealbreaker like GOT S5 was.*** I won't be happy at all about the storyline, but I would like to think the show will remain high quality re themes and character and all. Time will tell, though. Time will definitely tell.
As for GRRM, when his complaints seem to be "wild dragons shouldn't be in the Vale" and "the heraldry with four legs is wrong", well, I struggle to see that he's that disappointed in the adaptational changes. Believe me, I am well used to reading between the lines re GRRM and adaptations, something like the fact that he's not visiting the HOTD writers' room when he's in the UK is nothing. Catch me if at Worldcon or his Oxford lecture in August, GRRM again says that he could write a whole novel about Nettles, or if actually says something about non-Valyrian dragonriders, ok?
*I was just reading up on The Beast (2023) vs Henry James's “The Beast in the Jungle”. lol HOTD doesn't compare. Don't even think it, man.
**You know, this reminds me of how the Dance in F&B is not paced very well for individual characters, they keep going offscreen for months at a time. From shortly after Rhaenyra's crowning to the Fall of KL, Daemon just sits at Harrenhal and occasionally ventures out into the riverlands. From shortly after the Fall of KL until the Battle Above the Gods Eye, Daemon just... sits at Maidenpool and occasionally ventures out into the riverlands (with Nettles). Yeah, obviously a show would need to write more for him to do, he's a main character.
***Thank god HOTD isn't the sort of exploitative shitshow that GOT was. All y'all thinking it was a better adaptation because of your nostalgia goggles (and/or shitty memory) need to actually reread the books (especially AFFC/ADWD) and then submit yourself to the real-world misogynist and homophobic nonsense of S5-6 again, ugh.
#house of the dragon#asoiaf#rhaena targaryen the dragon twin#nettles#sheepstealer#daemon targaryen#fire and blood#f&b spoilers#hotd spoilers#(potential spoilers that is)#sigh people are *so* gullible about “leaks”#i found a good source that has been accurate about everything so far and it's nothing like the wild nonsense 4chan's been peddling#but alas this source does not have any answer for this very strong rumor so 🤷♀️🤦♀️😑🫠

I've had the Olympics on in the background and now I can only think in sports commentator voices
(hotd season 2 spoilers under the cut)
Baela Targaryen fucking mvp of the season dropping little chunks of wisdom all over the place with massive repercussions to the players and by extension the game
Oscar Tully and Alys Rivers were close runner ups with some big last minute plays, each finishing very strong, but to be fair, they had to deal with Daemon who had forgotten which team he was on, so they unfortunately got stuck with a much larger challenge
Ser Simon Strong gets an honorable mention for looking fabulous, staying faithful, and silently clapping in the background with joy on his face while Daemon remembered what color his jersey was and made a game saving play
a disappointing performance from Ser Alfred Broome tonight, I knew he wasn't quite on the level but I never thought I'd see him fumble the ball so hard, leaving Alys and Oscar to pick up the slack
Jace pulled his shit together last minute thanks to mvp Baela and got an assist alongside Ser Simon and Alyn of Hull, bringing to fruition the foundation carefully laid by Alys and Oscar and allowing Rhaenyra to score with Daemon
Larys Strong once again making small adjustments that will likely be game changing in the third quarter, bringing Aegon off the bench and to another field to avoid being murdered by his brother Aemond, who is currently subbing for him until he's taken a breather and recovered from Aemond's last attempt on his life
Tyland Lannister finally does something right in his life and guarantees a host of new players coming onto the field in the third quarter after having a lot of sex
Helaena, shocking the world tonight when she revealed that she does actually know the rules of the game and is kind of supporting the other team, inspiring her mother, Alicent, to start playing for the black team because she is gay
Ulf and Ser Criston Cole both making borderline suicidal plays tonight that we hope works out for exactly one of them
meanwhile the green team coach has finally been found inside a dark box and is putting rookie Daeron Targaryen onto the field in the hopes of shaking things up for the third quarter
all in all this has been a fantastic game, and I can't wait to see what the players cook up next
now a moment of silence for Rhaenys Targaryen, former finalist for the last crown cup championship, after she was killed by Aemond who still hasn't been red carded for some reason

the Ds are Hot. the mind has thoughts. ThoughtD: thoughts on HotD is back again for another week. House of the Dragon season 2 episode 6, here we go
they've added Storms End and Rooks Rest to the opening tapestry, that's nice. i like that
Triarchy mentioned! (for those who did not read F&B, the Triarchy is a union between the free cities of Tyrosh, Lys, and Myr that existed at this time)
man, Aemond sucks. i can't wait for all his plans to fall apart around him
you'd think someone with such mommy issues would be just a little more willing to listen to his mother's opinion
i like the choice of Darklyn as the guy who secretly has Targaryen ancestry. the marriage in question is enough generations back to have been before the conquest, a time when we don't have a very detailed Targaryen family tree, and the Darklyns are close enough to Dragonstone that a marriage back when the Targaryens were just a regional power makes sense
it makes sense that, if they were getting people back for Daemon's visions, they'd get Paddy Constantine
"did you say it" i like that, at least in this one thing, they're leaning into the ambiguity of F&B
oh my god Daemon is loosing his mind
i quite like Alys Rivers as a character
can't believe Seasmoke let this man think he was gonna ride him. what a scamp
and now that the search for dragonriders is stalling, here's Addam and Alyn of Hull!
and now that the search for dragonriders is stalling, here's Ulf the White!
if only Aemond knew what his one and only sex worker was saying about him
YES RHAENYRA SLAP THAT MAN
"it suits you" is it just me or is there, like, a sapphic vibe coming from Mysaria this episode?
damn, Larys really thinks he's smooth. "you need a hand. someone... shrewd" yeah alright my guy
they're still not shy about showing us Aegon's wounds, huh?
Aemond! get away from him! he did nothing wrong did many things wrong but he doesn't deserve this!
love Rhaena talking with little Joff. adorable
that's an enormous burn. how did they not notice that earlier?
it has become very clear now that they are, in fact, giving Nettles' plot line to Rhaena. i am incredibly disappointed by this
Alyn* of Hull is pulling an Egg, shaving his head so his Valyrian hair isn't obvious
Mysaria's plan was... a canoe full of produce? what?
MANY produce canoes??
there is war in the reach. will we see the war in the reach? will we see a certain boy riding his beautiful blue dragon in the war in the reach?
DAERON MENTION
we're learning a lot about Daeron this episode. we would learn even more if we ever got to see him no i will not let this go
and now that the search for dragonriders is stalling, here's Hugh the Hammer!
produce canoe riots
this is the second time this season Helaena has gone into town with her mom and had a horrible time. when will it end?
Mysaria lingering there with the Queen, overlooking the sea. i'm once again sensing sapphic vibes? am i just reading into this?
look Larys I can appreciate you sharing your experience with disability with the permanently injured king but for god's sake man, let him have his painkillers
the path to redemption lies through hallucinations of your dead brother grieving his wife
guys, i don't think Daemon's doing okay
"fine, i'll do it myself" - Seasmoke, on being provided with potential new riders
Mysaria tragic backstory unlocked and, uh, holy fuck
guys am i just imagining these sapphic vibes NO APPARENTLY I WAS NOT IMAGINING. this woman already fucked Daemon and now she's going for Rhaenyra, what a legend
once again, loved this episode, loving this season, see y'all next week
*edited because i cannot for the life of me remember which one is Addam and which one is Alyn (Addam is the dragonrider)

thoughts on HOTD, episode 6, season 2 (spoilers below)
Some people are not a fan of Aemond's acting in this episode but I think it's perfectly on point. Even the stupid anime villain voice. That's what he is. Aemond is three kids in a trenchcoat playacting at what he thinks power and intimidation. He's only genuinely frightening when he is at his most pathetic and ashamed, because that is what compels him to do depraved things- the thought of being mocked or pitied.
Aemond releases Alicent from the Small Council, IMO, not because he genuinely thinks her incompetent, but because, aside from his general misogyny, he sees his mother as a woman who pities him, and while he craves her affection, he can't stand being reduced to a sniveling little boy in her eyes again.
I truly DNGAF about the 'Aeriana Targaryen' shit. They had to show Rhaenyra actually trying to come up with a reasonable cover for why Rhaenyra would encourage others to try to claim dragons without her throwing the concept of Valyrian supremacy out the window. Yes, the writers could have just decided to randomly make, say, Viserra or Gael Targaryen have wed a Darklyn, but I'm not really bothered that they didn't. Rhaena the Black Bride's daughter Aeriana by Maegor. Sure.
The writers seem to be trying to walk a thin line between Alys manipulating Daemon for kicks by preying on his insecurities regarding who 'deserves' the Iron Throne in his family, but the suggestion that Viserys 'never sought the throne' is wild. He put himself forward as a contender for the Great Council! I genuinely can't tell if we're meant to believe Alys truly thinks Rhaenyra could be a better ruler than Aegon, or if this is all supposed to be taken as her playing mind games with Daemon sheerly out of spite.
The foreshadowing that Rhaena will claim Sheepstealer, rather than Nettles, seems pretty strong at this point. I get the writers' desire to have Rhaena claim a dragon in a more active and assertive manner than simply patiently waiting for an egg to hatch for her, especially since Morning in-canon was not at all capable of being flown to war during the Dance. However, I wish we could see both Rhaena and Nettles tame dragons here, rather than one Black female character (in a show that already has a problem with shoving its Black characters to the sidelines) simply taking over another's storyline. It is possible they will still include Nettles, and have her claim a different dragon instead, but I'm losing hope.
Gwayne is a snotty racist asshole, obviously, but I commend the show for displaying that he does genuinely love Alicent and Daeron, who he seems to view as akin to his own son. It's surprising that he specifically praises Daeron's kindness, and seems to view it as a strength of his nephew's, rather than a weakness. In the grand scheme of HoTD men, Gwayne is probably one of the better ones, at least in terms of how he treats his family.
I thought the smallfolk riot scene was well-done. Alicent and Helaena are clearly not the ones responsible for the food shortage- Alicent has been booted off the Small Council and Helaena has no real political power herself. Yet they- and most noblewomen in the series- will always be blamed more viciously than any of their husbands or sons for the suffering. It's also good to see the foreshadowing of a more ruthless side of Hugh- while he is motivated by love for his family, he will do anything in order to protect them, including stealing food from other starving peasants.
Seasmoke chasing Addam Velaryon down like an over-eager puppy was pretty entertaining. Whether or not this implies Laenor is actually dead, I have no idea.
It's interesting that they have Mysaria confide about her own incestual abuse- her clearly viewing her father as a predator who horribly violated her- compared to Rhaenyra, who while openly critical of Daemon's behavior as a husband, and who does acknowledge that Daemon took advantage of her as a teenager- doesn't seem to see him as a monster. I don't really feel any type of way about Rhaenyra/Mysaria- obviously I do think Rhaenyra is bisexual, given everything about her and Alicent- but I don't think Mysaria has been used that well as a character by the show, and I'm not sure whether this is supposed to be a one-off moment of passion, or if they will actually have her and Mysaria in an illicit relationship moving forward.
Overall, I think this was one of the weaker episodes this season. It felt like a lot of wheel spinning because the writers were unsure of how to build up to the end of the season. Probably a 6.5 out of 10 for me.

Omg I saw the new HotD trailer and immediately thought of you! I love your writing so much. What do you think of the trailer? Is the new season going to change your ideas for Graves in any way?
hello and I'm so tickled pink that you love my stuff!!!
I LOVED the new trailer. reduced me to a gibbering mess. loved seeing that B-52 flying fortress of a dragon buzz the army when Aemond and Vhagar did a low pass over. rev up the Bugatti wuheeeee
loved Rhaenyra staring out over Shipbreaker Bay all soot-stained and emotionally fucking drained. pretty sure she did exercise a little bit of Aegon I/Balerion on Harrenhal with Syrax on Storm's End (or at least the Baratheon fleet). let my girl burn it all down
had a major pacing the house moment when they showed a shot of Helaena's face upturned and looking through the black of her veil, then again when she was at knifepoint. i really can't handle it lmfao, i want to leap through the screen and protect muh queen and all of her children. they deserve the world
Aegon being peak brooding menace. Aemond pacing for the throne and looking like he's got his eye on the prize. Alicent staring out over the water (god please let it be a dream sequence or she's at Harrenhal by some plot device and she's staring out over an inlet of the Gods Eye, that would just be TOP LEVEL irony)
ALYS. FUCKING. RIVERS. I can't wait to see the Witch Queen. I can't wait to watch her dynamic with Aemond. I'm so excited for that and Gayle Rankin's overall portrayal. Ewan and her are going to kill it, I just know it (many will die...of fun :) )
regarding Season 2 impacting the story or informing changes on Graves - no, I don't expect it to. not when the goal line is to finish draft and hopefully get everything out in the world prior to or when Season 2 is airing.
the fic will stand canon divergent as all my characterizations of Daeron, Jeyne Arryn (unless she manifests with a hoard of dogs in the show, in which case I will lose my shit lmfao), Cregan Stark, and the twins are likely to differ from how the show will portray them (hell I already did that with fleshing out the twins a lot more than what we saw in season 1 ) - additionally, Cregan is married to his first wife Arra Norrey in my fic, when in canon Arra died in childbirth in the same year Graves is roughly set. already pretty divergent from book and show here, I'm off in the woods, I am deep in the weeds - canon? never heard of her
the epilogue for graves is already pretty set - this is a fic that was written backwards, essentially, with a final line and ending there before there was even a middle of the story!
also, I wonder if we might even see Daeron in season 2 with the casting yet to be finalized for him at the time of writing this reply. in which case, that makes Graves verrrry canon divergent if they eliminate him as a character in the show (I hope they don't).
thanks for the ask, anon!
