there's apparently an audio upload daily limit. i was not finished.
second night of trick or tricking and he has to keep up with a 12-bonk deep scout and a stumbling demo. scout and demo have broken one (a few) of the windows of medic's lab and demo's fumbling, making a bunch of bang snaps for scout to take, jump and throw inside the lab through the ex-windows. medic shows up behind them with his bonesaw, breathing like a wild dog from the sprint he did to find these fuckers. solly says this, and then scout and demo are running for their damn lives (flinstones running sound effect) with a fuming medic behind them. soldier's running after them, slowly getting his energy back as he yells at medic to not dare harm him fellow soldiers!
this sounds like something that he just has to do, he's forced to act out. he sounds so tired and exasperated, like he's been through this before and is trying to hold himself together from just crumbling from the inside out. like sisyphus, he too is burdened by his cursed existence.
there are so many damn heavy voice lines. is heavy valve's favourite oc from this group?
there are a lot of sniper lines as well. the oc competition is heating up
heavy before kicking scout out of his and medics bedroom after scout busted in rambling about some shit idk heavymedic parents + scout propaganda
these two audios are just scout riling up heavy/medic cuz he's bored and wants to run but he craves the adrenaline of a real chase (also the medic one could be something he's saying as he's jumping up to throw the aforementioned bang snaps into medic's lab)
sniper calls scout mongrel a lot. that's his nickname for him, affectionate or otherwise
sniper must spit a lot when speaking just based on how often he's doing alliteration with p and f words and how he'll do a full stop to fill his entire chest cavity 104% before just fucking going for that enunciation
their,, their laughs sound alike :^] they're laughing together :^) also:
Do you have a fav domination line from each of the mercs? If not, any fav voice lines in general?
ah piss. i didn't see that you said "from each of the mercs" and i thought it said just fav domination line. two hours have gone by and i have already gone through all the domination voice lines one by one eliminating them bracket style, tearing my heart trying to choose between my favourite cunts. sorry about that mate.
alright i tried but i could only boil down my favourite to two favourites
the first one it just makes him sound like a smart alec. a smile on his face that's almost basically a smirk. eyebrows raised up, eyes half lidded, face all calm. it makes me ball up my fists in anger. i want to bonk him on the head.
seconds ones cute condensation(cant remember the actual word right now)
i love engie. anyway. the mp3 tournament was relentless to my soul so here are the dumb thoughts that passed through my head like a tumbleweed
all the damn voice lines of demo and soldier trying to hide their friendship are just a nail to my heart, fellas. they're the only true soulmates this world has seen and will ever see. doesn't matter if its platonic or romantic, they love each other in a way none of us ever will another being.
also, the damn line from soldier where he goes "i have something to tell you about the engieneer (!!!!)! call me later pal": they're the resident shit talkers of teufort. its 11;45 pm, you go downstairs to the 'kitchen' to get some water and you hear soldiers hushed screaming as he relays to demo the new armchair spy got. then he hears the floorboard creek cuz you walked in and he shouts at the phone that this is the last reminder for the night about how much he hates the red demo before hanging up violently (later he goes outside and uses a flashlight to tell demo he's sorry in morse code)
engie has so many lines that are just puns. i need to see more of that and i need to incorporate that in anything i do with him
demo loves solly. he's supportive of him and his interests
ick bean,,, bilingual rocket boy
not gonna lie this is just kinda cute… the lilt he gets in his voice at the end <3 (demosoldier parents + scout propaganda)
also very much cute why haven't i heard this one before. could be used in a engiesoldier fic or smth
that last line is him complaining after demo made them and scout go about trick or tricking all the others in the base
spy in the maid costume, cat ears on, sitting by the kitchen table, one leg over the other, after pushing snipers half finished beer bottle off the table

Getting to know me
Tagged by wonderful @to-kill-a-mockinggirl <3
(yes, please, tag me in more things, I love it!!)
Top 3 Ships (I will try to mention the most important ones throughout my fandom life, not the ones I am currently into – sorry, Reylo)
1. Doctor x Rose Tyler (Doctor Who). It has everything I love in a ship, angsty male, who starts loving his life because of one amazing human who is too good for him, two dumbasses enjoying life and each other way too much and eventual DRAMA. Perfection. These two remind me that love is possible (but you might lose it and fall into depression, oops)
2. Ron Weasley x Hermione Granger (HP). I mean…classic. Those two introduced me to fanfiction and my love for awkward ginger idiot and an awkward genius knows no bounds. I think Ron was one of my favourite characters ever, and they complement each other greatly.
3. Buffy x Spike (Buffy the Vampire Slayer). In the world where everyone was obsessing over Angel, I was completely in Spike’s corner. And man, that love/hate relationship is everything! The way a character, full of egoistical desires, decides to earn his soul back because without it he would never be able to love the way Buffy deserves to be loved…who can refuse that? Plus, they are extremely hot.
Currently reading
Fanfiction? Don’t have much strength for anything substantial (because 100k fanfiction is not substantial at all!)
Last movie I watched
For the first time – Solo (I can’t believe it, but I enjoyed it more that TROS and that is saying something. And the guy playing Han did a good job)
For the nth time – Empire Strikes Back. (Loved it)
Food I’m craving
Does alcohol count? If not, then Kiev cake (google it, but it tastes better than it looks). Chicken Kiev meatball will also do. (What do the tastiest things come from Kiev?)
Not tagging anyone specifically, but if you want to do it, feel free to say that I tagged you.

galway, ireland
22.3.2018
I woke up at 6:30 to inhale three croissants and some cheese and go to the airport. Prague airport is really weird because you check in, go through passport control, go through all the shopping, and then you sit in the terminal and wait until about an hour before your flight before going through security. I also think that lemon Pepsi will be my new “waiting for a flight” drink because it’s so good and the only place I’ve seen it so far is in the airport.
Upon arrival in Dublin, I got some water and a vegetable and mozzarella “toastie” (hehe) and went to find my bus to Galway. I’ve already noticed so many differences between Prague and Ireland and I’ve been here for less than an hour.
After the three hour ride to Galway, I met Alyssa at the bus station and we basically went straight to dinner.
Galway is the third largest city in Ireland, but it really has a small town vibe more than a city one because there’s only about 75,000 people. It’s perfect. For dinner I had chicken kiev, and it was delicious and full of garlic. I also tried “brown sauce” for the first time. I dipped some fries in it, and it tastes like if you mixed a teeny tiny bit of ketchup into a lot of apple cider vinegar....I stole some packets to take back to Prague. AND the water was free and cold.
There’s so many cute little canals and rivers and waterways around Alyssa’s apartment (which is the nicest student apartment I’ve ever seen, might I add).
When we got back, Alyssa did my makeup for fun, we relaxed for a while after my journey, and then we went out for drinks in some Irish pubs. We jumped around for a while listening to a bunch of different live music (which is so lighthearted and fun and in every bar).
By the time we made it out of the apartment, the live music scene was winding down, so we walked around Galway at night. We saw some beautiful things and had a great time. We also got some BIG pizza!!!
It was a great first day.
23.3.2018
We ate some bagels for breakfast, and Alyssa took me to her school to show me the campus. It was beautiful, and it was also kinda nice to be on an actual college campus separated from the rest of the city for a little while.
We then walked the short distance to the Galway Cathedral, which is the last great stone cathedral to be built in Europe. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to go inside because there was a mass going on when we arrived.
We went to Tesco to buy some snacks for the next day, went back to the apartment to drop them off, and walked around town stopping in different stores and showing me the city in the daylight.
I also got to go into TK Maxx and felt at home a little bit. Miss you, TJ Maxx!!!!!!!
After that, we got some coffee at a cute little coffee shop and ventured home, making a pit stop at the Spanish Arch (sparching: sitting along the water at the arch) and strolled on a part of the Long Walk (thanks to Alyssa and Ang and the entirety of Galway, I can’t type that out or think of Galway at all without thinking of this song, but tbh, I’m not mad about that at all: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3V-oXwCWL4).
We got some garlic bread on the way home, went to take a lil snooze, ate some soup and grilled cheese for dinner, and decided to go out to a bar/pub again after. But first, look how cute this little canal spot is.
Here’s a nice picture of me, Alyssa, Ang, and my new pal Katie.
My first Guinness (both in Ireland and ever)!
This was a super fun night because the live band was incredible and sang songs we all knew, and there were a couple of Irish girls who made us all dance with them. It was a lighthearted and almost spiritual even. Ethereal, you could say, if you said it in the right tone.
After we left, we got the most amazing pineapple pizza with ranch dip (the best in Europe!!) and went to bed.
24.3.2018
Surprise, we ate bagels for breakfast again!! We met up with Alyssa’s friend Lauren and we all headed to the coach station to get on our tour bus for the Cliffs of Moher and a few other destinations.
Our first stop on the bus tour was the Dinguaire Castle from the 16th century.
Alyssa is good at almost falling.
We got back on the bus and took some cute cow pictures through the window on our way to our next stop.
The next stop: Poulnabrone dolmen.
Next: The Celtic High Crosses. It was unsettling to have to walk and jump over graves to get to them.
After that, we had a break for lunch in the teeny tiny town of Doolin. I got bangers and mash, which was even better than I imagined. We also had a couple of minutes to go in some small shops and take some pretty pictures.
Finally, what we’ve all been waiting for, we arrived at the Cliffs of Moher. I am not exaggerating when I say that the cliffs were the most beautiful thing I’ve seen in Europe so far this semester. We really lucked out with this beautiful warm sunny day considering Ireland is usually at least cloudy if not rainy and windy. My words don’t do the cliffs justice, and the pictures barely do either.
You know we had to give my mom a heart attack (don’t worry, I was actually standing on a ledge, sorry to ruin the illusion).
OK here’s the cutest little wet floor sign in the bathroom at the bottom. I’m obsessed.
Our final stop on the journey back to Galway included a stop on the Burren where the ground looks like the surface of the moon.
When we finally got back, we were chilly and tired, so we got some pasta from Pasta Factory and went back to the apartment to eat that and cookies. We were going to lay down for a bit and get up to do something else, but we ended up crashing at like 8:30 pm. I don’t blame us, it was a long day on the bus.
25.3.2018
We woke up after a long night of sleep even though we lost an hour for Daylight Savings, and we went to walk around town in the morning waiting for brunch places to open. How CUTE IS THIS PLACE?!
I’d been craving pancakes and bacon and a smoothie for as long as I can remember, so thank gosh for this delicious place. I’m getting hungry again just looking at this picture.
Alyssa then walked me to the coach station and we said our goodbyes. I got to get on a bus an hour earlier than what I paid for because my flight was scheduled to leave earlier than I thought it would. I’m grateful for the kindness of Irish men who work for this bus company. The three hour ride was fine and seamless, but the Dublin airport is one of the most stressful ones I’ve been in so far. I’m glad I got there earlier. It was a long day of traveling, but it didn’t feel like it because everything was fine and Ireland is beautiful.
My last picture I took in Dublin, Ireland before getting on the plane home to Prague (miss you sweetie).
I think that if I had the opportunity to study abroad again after Prague, I would choose somewhere in Ireland. It was so fun, relaxing, beautiful, and full of nature and nice people.
Differences between Ireland and Prague:
Everyone I encountered in Ireland in the first hour of me being there has been incredibly kind, even when their jobs are typically those who get negatively stereotyped as being miserable, such as passport control, bus drivers, fast food stops in airports, etc.
They drive on the other side of the road. I knew it when I booked the flights, but it’s a weird concept to see in real life.
A total stranger asked me to use my charger on the bus and then called me a “fine woman” when I said she could. People in Prague don’t even look at me!!
Night life is so pure and good. There’s live music everywhere and everyone is happy to be there and everyone dances with everybody.
Alyssa’s school has a designated campus. My school in Prague is extremely integrated into the city, while hers feels like a separate community in a way.
Prague uses bars as social gathering points to sip on beer and talk to old friends, while Ireland uses bars and pubs as places to drink a lot and dance with new friends. Both are great!
They all speak English, and I love the Czech language and I think I’m picking up some phrases relatively well, but it is so refreshing to hear English everywhere.
I’ll be back, Ireland!

Bulletproof Coffee: Plenty Of Bull. And Fat Too.
When I first heard about “Bulletproof coffee” it was from the perspective of enjoying an eye roll moment at the daftness of some LA diet trends.
I figured that the few folks that managed to down the brew without gagging might find reason to pause once they realized that their coffee had more calories than a McDonald's double cheeseburger.
However, I was wrong to underestimate this fad, and my sentiment has turned from amusement to alarm.
For the uninitiated, Bulletproof coffee is anything up to 480-calories worth of brew made by smooshing fresh coffee in a blender with grass-fed, unsalted butter and medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil. It was invented by ex-Silicon Valley techie-turned-entrepreneur Dave Asprey, who created the recipe after feeling energized from drinking tea with yak butter in it while learning to meditate in Nepal.
Bulletproof has now morphed into a multimillion-dollar low carb diet business, with consumption of at least one mug of the buttery oil-slick for breakfast every day as its central doctrine.
Claims for the drink include that it increases mental focus, banishes hunger and cravings, and triggers weight loss by way of ketosis (the metabolic state triggered by a lack of carbohydrates that means the body burns fat for fuel).
Needless to say, there have been no peer-reviewed studies that show bulletproof coffee has any health benefits at all. But while there are diet fads that simply don’t deliver any benefits, there are others that could actively impact your health for the worse.
Bulletproof coffee is in the latter category, and here’s why:
SO much saturated fat…
For sure, a direct link between saturated fat and heart disease is hard to prove, and saturated fat is not the straight-up dietary villain it was once thought. Nevertheless, there are very good reasons to avoid too much and a Bulletproof coffee made with two tablespoons of butter and two tablespoons of MCT oil can supply 43 grams of saturated fat – over twice the 20 gram recommended daily intake for an adult consuming a 2000 calorie daily diet.
The question is, why would you want to be experimenting with your arteries any way?
The consensus science on dietary fats, which the American Heart Association, the European Society of Cardiology, the UK’s Scientific Advisory Committee for Nutrition and the World Health Organization all agree on, is that to reduce heart disease we should be reducing saturated fats, and more crucially, replacing them with unsaturated fats - the type in nuts, seeds, oily fish and vegetable oils. That means that if you really are set on ruining a good cup of Java by adding fat, it should be olive oil or canola oil, you blend in - not butter, grass-fed or otherwise.
Butter drives up levels of LDL cholesterol and is a complete nonsense thing to be eating lots of, especially in such an unappetizing way. A little butter is fine, but you should be enjoying it spread on some crusty bread, melted over asparagus, unctuous and garlicky inside a chicken Kiev – you get the picture.
MCTs may have some benefits but…
To be fair, some specific saturated fatty acids, may be quite innocuous or even have benefits. This looks to be the case with the two medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) that make up “Brain Octane Oil” – the preferred MCT oil that Bulletproof want you to use ($48.95 for 32 oz, since you ask). These MCTs, known as capric acid and caprylic acid, have a shorter chemical structure than other fats, and are quickly absorbed and metabolized by the body, which can theoretically promote a feeling of fullness and prevent fat storage.
However, this nascent science on satiety needs to be weighed against the fact that a Bulletproof coffee provides close on a quarter of your daily calories in one measly drink. Fat is the highest calorie nutrient and overall the least satiating. Suffice to say, there are far more nourishing and satisfying ways to spend 480 calories, and you should pick one.
Buttery coffee: it’s just not a great breakfast
Bulletproof coffee for breakfast supplies fat, caffeine, and…nothing else of any nutritional value.
By comparison, a balanced, filling breakfast such as a couple of poached eggs with wilted spinach on whole grain bread supplies valuable protein, vitamins, iron, and - whisper it - good quality carbohydrate, all for 400 calories. The best bit? You can still get your caffeine boost by having a black coffee on the side.

Dad Letter, 052619
26 May, 2019
Dear Dad--
Good morning and happy Sunday to you!
This past week was not unbearable, and I seem to have borne it! I did my job, and I didn’t have a heart attack from the stress. And now I’m rewarded with a long weekend! We just came back from our Sunday morning breakfast tacos. I ate a special-of-the-month taco called a Tokyo Drifter, which has: teriyaki glazed pulled pork, fried wonton strips, sweet & sour veggie slaw, sesame Sriracha mayo, cilantro, and lime. It might sound like a train wreck, but it was fuckin’ amazing. Kind of an odd thing to eat for breakfast, but still amazing. I think the employees of this restaurant must set their watches by the arrival of Zach and me every Sunday when they open.
I’m watching a mini-series called Chernobyl, and it’s about (you guessed it) Chernobyl, the Soviet nuclear plant that blew up a little bit and melted down just a tad back in 1986. Using the method I use to mark time, 1986 is the year Stacy graduated from High School. I think it was the year the Space Shuttle Challenger had its accident, too. The mini-series is so good! And I don’t know if you can see it, because I think it’s on HBO, but perhaps soon people will be able to rent it? Anyway, it’s just very well made. And it gives good reminders, like: Nuclear plants are complicated, and can cause more, and farther-reaching damage when they explode than, say, a coal-burning plant. Coal plant blows up, maybe a few dozen would die. Nuclear plant blows up, hundreds of thousands could die. So naturally I was excited to learn they’d made a mini-series about it.
We tend to think very little about Chernobyl, in terms of human suffering, because it was the U.S.S.R., and they tried to keep the whole thing secret. (This worked great, until about 8 hours after the explosion, when the radiation started to become noticeable in neighboring countries.) Plus, there were all the jokes. What kind of chicken glows in the dark? Chicken Kiev! Har, har har. But it was a full-blown nuclear plant explosion, complete with exposure of the nuclear fuel, which burned, and spewed radiation into the atmosphere at the rate of two Hiroshimas per hour. Lots and lots of people died, from all the radiation. If you’re someone who likes documentaries and movies about tornadoes, hurricanes, perfect storms, plane crashes, tsunamis, terrorist attacks, nuclear meltdowns, and other disasters, and the heroes born of that tragedy, Chernobyl really is a rich source of material. It was a terrible event, with lots and lots of people having to think creatively, and/or give their lives to prevent it from destroying a large portion of the Soviet Union and a bunch of other countries.
I always feel the need to explain myself when I express fondness for popular culture that uses real-life disaster as its subject matter. The thing I’m enjoying about this mini-series is not, “Cool! Look at all the Rooskies melting from the radiation!” but rather, how very well made the series is. It’s scary! It’s a bleak, Kafka-esque look at how Soviet party structure affected everyone’s reaction to the crisis. Lots of men who couldn’t tell how much radiation was leaking out, because, “Well, we wanted to use the good dosimeter, but it’s locked in the safe and we don’t know where the key is.” As a result, they thought the radiation was 3.6 roentgen, which is about 400 chest X-rays, and not realizing that it’s only reading 3.6 because that’s how high their shitty dosimeter goes, and in reality, the level was more like 15,000 roentgen. Anyway, Chernobyl, the HBO mini-series, check it out, if you can find it. It’s showing on Monday nights, and tomorrow is episode 4 out of 5 total.
Not much other news, I’m pleased to say! I have tomorrow off, so I’m going to use the time to catch up on some movies I wanted to watch, like The Highwaymen. Also a Jewish friend has recommended a Holocaust movie I completely missed called Defiance, from 2008. I’m guessing it has something to do with nazis, and some non-nazis who defy them…? I like the idea of using Memorial Day to watch at least one war movie. People who haven’t seen it should be made to watch Saving Private Ryan on at least one Memorial Day of their lives. Maybe The Longest Day if they’re too sensitive for swear words. Saving Private Ryan can be a little heavy on the realism for those of a more delicate disposition. I still don’t like watching the last battle because of how Private Mellish gets it.
Anyway, pleased to report that my brain isn’t being half the pain in the ass it was being last week. Work isn’t bad. Got some good stuff to watch, and good stuff to read. And Zach and I are pretty confident that (a) we’re going to move to Maine, and (b) we’re going to quit our jobs before the year’s end. He’s got to escape the IRS, and I have to escape the car insurance place. We’re never going to be 100% ready, so we’ll just have to do it at whatever degree of readiness we can achieve between now and bailing-out time. I’m trying to view it more as an adventure, with the promise of many delights unforeseen, and less as a Bataan Death March of a relocation, featuring many unexpected nightmares, and the beginnings of a job hunt once there. Perhaps I’ll have that tattooed on my arm, near my watch: It’s not a nightmare! It’s an adventure, dammit!
I still miss cigarettes! And there’s a part of me (again, thank you, brain!) that keeps wondering, “Okay, surely I’ve proven my point by now, and it’s okay to start smoking again?” I quit on the date 3/3, so I guess I’m coming up on my 3-month anniversary. I’m also ignoring the part of my brain that keeps wondering, “How about if we just have one a day? Surely that would work!” and the part that says, “Or just one per week, even! C’mon! What are ya, a pussy? Who would know?” Probably everyone, because I'd go admit it online, and I'd feel guilty. I wouldn't be craving a cigarette, I'd be gleefully horseback riding through Flavor Country, and all would be right with the world, but I'd feel guilty.
So here’s to another week of trying to listen to the better angels of our nature. Love to you both! :)

RomAntics
Romancing (Verb): a. to court or woo romantically; treat with ardor or chivalrousness:
Antics (Noun): a. a grotesque, fantastic, or ludicrous gesture, act, or posture.
Or 5 times Jemma attempts to out romance Fitz and the one time she learned she might already have.
Happy Fitzsimmons Secret Valentine to @theclaravoyant! Who asked for Jemma Outromancing Fitz. I only hope I did such a fun prompt justice
It was only after Fitz gave her a tiny nudge that Jemma acknowledged the incessant chirping of her alarm. She couldn’t ignore it, she’d already allowed herself to hit the snooze button yesterday, she didn’t want to make a habit of it. Although it was much more appealing to stay in bed curled around her warm and cozy boyfriend, she had stuff to do and as long as she turned off the alarm before its little song ended she was still on schedule.
She finally did pull herself from the bed, slamming her hand down on the off button before Fitz was officially disturbed and grumpy as a result. Jemma looked down at his sleeping form. Every morning, once her side was vacated, Fitz stretched his limbs out in every direction, lying diagonally across the bed. She shook her head in amusement. He always had preferred to sleep that way; adjusting to having her there with him had not been easy. Many nights she found herself inches from tumbling off the edge of the bed.
God he was adorable. Jemma allowed herself a few moments to admire the sleeping man, before she absolutely had to start getting ready. As she dressed she couldn’t help but take extra notice of their things so easily meshed together. Both their papers strewn across the desk. Her family pictures and his. Her sweaters and his and her shirts and his all folded up in one drawer. It wasn’t ideal the cramped space they shared but it was sufficient.
Feeling a burst of affection, and knowing better than to wake Fitz if she ever wanted to get on with her day, she took a page from her note pad and scribbled down a message.
Fitz,
It’s going to be another long day, meetings and press conferences and translating the lab reports into “English” for Mace. I’m starting to forget what the lab even looks like. If I start to forget what you look like I swear I’ll quit. I’ll try to stay awake, but if I’m asleep when you come in just know that I love you and I miss you. Let’s try to find time for just us this week.
Love, Jemma
She set the note on his tablet where she knew he’d find it and headed off to work. She’d mostly forgotten about it until she returned to their room late that evening. Fitz was still working in the lab and probably would be for another hour at least. She was surprised to find the bed made, usually the covers were just tossed back and she would drop in to make it sometime around lunch. Though she didn’t have time for that today. Even more of a surprise than Fitz making the bed was the folded sheet of paper placed on her pillow.
Jemma,
I miss you too, so much. I’m afraid any day we’re not side by side for most of our waking hours and sleeping ones I’ll miss you. But I’ll take what I can get, be it five minutes as you walk from meeting to meeting or a sixty second video chat when we’re just two rooms away from each other. I’ll try to work more quickly today, so you won’t have to stay up too long. Not that you have to wait up, I’m sure your exhausted. I could never do everything that you do in a day, I am so amazed by you. You should get your rest and we’ll start fresh on spending more time together tomorrow. I know it’s probably late now that you’re reading this, you really must stop for lunch sometimes, so instead of hoping you have a good day I’ll just say I hope you had a wonderful one.
All my love, Fitz
Jemma wiped at her eyes. Why was she crying? Why was he so wonderful? All she did was leave him a silly little note and she receives this in return. He was always such a romantic.
As she was about to set aside the letter and decide which book to tuck it away inside of for safe keeping when her eyes narrowed. Was that what this was about? He was still trying to prove he was more romantic than her? She knew they could be competitive but this seemed a little ridiculous. And he certainly wasn’t playing fair. It wasn’t even a note, it was a beautiful letter. The kind you kept in a box in your attic that your grandkids found decades later.
Well he wasn’t going to get away with it. She’d proved it before and she’d prove it again. She was just as romantic as him. Maybe even more.
The next morning Jemma’s alarm went off fifteen minutes early. She dressed in half the time and answered her emails from her phone as she breezed through the local grocery store for supplies and a slightly less local grocery store since so few people carried buffalo mozzarella.
He just had to love the sandwich with the homemade pesto aioli and the fancy cheese and the bloody imported prosciutto didn’t he? It was a time-consuming pain in the ass to make and she really had a tight schedule that day as it was. But that just made it all the more romantic to prepare the beloved lunch for him.
Once it was done, she left it in the fridge with his name on it in large letters so he wouldn’t miss it and no one else would mistake it for their own. When she passed him in the hallway on her way to meet with Mace she grabbed her hand tugging him to a stop. “There is a surprise for you in the kitchen.”
She has to keep moving so he only smiled back confusedly and holds her fingers until they can’t reach anymore.
Aside from the look on Fitz’s face, the best part about making that sandwich was she snacked while making it so she wouldn’t be starving if she didn’t have time to stop for lunch. She never expected to balance out her lack of lunches with a beautiful three course meal. When she returned to their room that night she found Fitz had dragged out a folding table and chairs and set it up with candles and plates and napkins.
“Fitz what is all this?”
“Dinner.” He said simply and quickly moved to pull out her chair for her.
“But why?” It wasn’t an anniversary. Not since they started dating, not since they met, not since they graduated, not since any number of milestones they had conquered together.
Fitz took his seat across from her and began to remove the lids from the trays. “Just a thank you for lunch.”
“Well I think this a bit grand for a thank you.” Jemma said as she pulled the tray nearest to her closer for a whiff of what they were having. She recognized it immediately. Chicken Kiev from her favorite restaurant. They hadn’t been since their three-month anniversary. Everything had just been too hectic. She had attempted to recreate the meal herself but wasn’t ashamed to admit that it had fallen short. However, it had been just good enough to have left her craving it ever since.
Well that and their-
“We’ve got tiramisu for dessert.”
Oh it was on now.
The next day was the first day in weeks she had down time. Not a day off exactly. She was on call as soon as Mace was out of his meeting but it was unexpected and had no predicted end time. She immediately headed for the lab. There was a compound she’d only worked out on paper that she’d like to see through to fruition but in the spirit of competition she arrived at the lab and took up her spot next to Fitz who smiled happily down at her, surprised to see her in the lab at all.
“What are you doing here?”
“Mace has a meeting.” Jemma explained. She pulled over some of the papers Fitz was sorting through. “What are you working on?”
“These are some unfinished designs I found in storage, most of them are too dated to bother with completing but there are a couple here with potential, you want to help me decide which to start with?”
“I only get to help choose?” She asked with an exaggerated pout.
“No, no you can help too, I just didn’t know how much -uh- time you had.” Fitz said. He smiled knowingly. “I know you hate to leave a project unfinished.”
“Well hopefully I’ve got some time, what about this one?” She picked up a design for an old-school spy watch. Like the ones Coulson liked to collect. “Has anyone updated what these do recently?”
Fitz smirked. “Uh, yeah, a little company called Apple.”
Jemma shoved his arm. “I bet we could come up with something better.”
“Me too.”
The meeting ended up lasting over three hours. In that time, she and Fitz sketched out designs for watches for men and women agents, with features of your typical health monitor watch, a standard GPS, a similar laser to that of the mousehole device and some designs even incorporated a backup dosage of dendrotoxin.
“These are great Fitz, I wish I could stay longer, but I’m sure you’ll make something the great out of what we’ve started here.”
Fitz shuffled the papers with a thoughtful expression. “You know this is nothing urgent, doesn’t have a deadline or anything, I can hold off working on it, until the next executives only meeting.”
A warm feeling swirled in her stomach. It was nice to know he missed working with her as much as she missed working with him. “It’s a date.”
--
Jemma used to block out everything when she was running on the treadmill. Her brain had never liked to be idle but it was healthy to turn it off at least for a few minutes and the running gave her something else to focus on. Until she picked it up again after her return from Maveth. Then she found she needed distractions like music or it was a little too much like being back there, running, endlessly. She tried to find a good running companion but Daisy really hated it and May preferred her own routine. Elena was happy to run with her but she was on and off base so frequently it was always a surprise whether she was on the treadmill next to her.
She wasn’t today, although Elena was certainly on base but otherwise occupied. Jemma suspected she would see Mack for his morning workout either.
So instead she blasted her music through her headphones. Today’s pick was old pop songs. Maybe tomorrow would be classical.
The rhythmic beat pulsing through her headphones drowned out the hum of the machine next to hers turning on. It was only when she saw the familiar profile in the corner of her eye did she know anyone was even there. “Fitz?” She asked suddenly, tugging the buds out of her ears but trying to keep her pace.
“Yeah?”
“What are you doing?” He was wearing what she was sure was his only pair of running pants and an old sweat shirt over an even older t-shirt.
“Jogging.” His jog was really more of a brisk walk but that was beside the point right now.
“Fitz you hate jogging.”
“Yes, but we said we’d spend more time together, since we’re so busy during the day I thought this was a good time.”
“But,” Jemma faltered, “you really hate jogging.”
“Yeah, but I really like you.” He said trying with some difficulty to flirt and fall into step with her. She slowed her pace just slightly. “I had tried the other morning but you must have been off to the store because I couldn’t find you in the gym and then the morning after our dinner I was still too full to even consider trying to run, but no excuses today.”
“Well alright, that’s really thought-FITZ!” There was a loud thump as Fitz mis-stepped on the treadmill and fell forward. The speeding belt dumped him on to the gym mat with a second, even more cringeworthy thud. Jemma slid off her own machine and dropped down onto the floor next to him.
“Are you alright?” Jemma turned him over, inspecting him for injury.
“No, no I’m alright.” Fitz mumbled. Jemma rolled her eyes and pulled him up to a seated position. She checked his eyes but everything looked good. The worst of his injury, aside from the brusies to fresh to see was a few scrapes from where the belt scratched him.
“Come on let’s get you patched up.”
“I’m sorry I didn’t mean to interrupt your run.”
“Oh, no its perfectly alright.”
Leave it to Fitz, Jemma thought as she supported as much of his weight as possible, not only did he out do her attempt at quality time by spending time with her by participating in something he hated to do but now he’d gone and hurt himself in the process.
--
Jemma was prepared long before Fitz returned to their bunk. Whether he would admit it or not she knew he was sore from his tumble off the treadmill and she could easily admit that she gave excellent massages. Her knowledge of the human body and a thorough understanding of how to relax muscles did give her an advantage.
She must have been quite the sight when Fitz walked in, towel laid out in front of her, basket of lotions and such next to her, candles lit. He faltered at the sight of her, positively beaming at him as she sat cross legged on the bed. He looked back over his shoulder into the hallway before entering and slowly closed the door behind him.
“What’s going on?”
“I thought maybe you could do with a bit of relaxing.” She said, patting the spot of the bed in front of her.
“Um well-yeah that would be nice I guess –“
“I mean you must be terribly sore, falling off the treadmill earlier.” He tilted his head at her.
“What—oh yeah, well a little I guess.”
“Well come on then.” Fitz clambered onto the bed, laying on his stomach only for Jemma to tug him back up to remove his shirt. Once he was settled Jemma swung a leg over to his over side and sat on his bum to give her the best access to his back.
“That smells nice.” Fitz muttered as she lathered his back in lotion.
Jemma smiled. “It sooths sore muscles and stimulates the mind.”
“Mmhmm.” Fitz acknowledgement turned into a hum of pleasure as she worked out a sore spot in his lower back. “God that feels good.”
“Well I’m glad.” She slid her hands along his sides, less focused by the minute on the massage and more so on pulled reactions from him. Did he have any idea what he sounded like? She pushed the heel of her palm into a knot between his shoulder and he groaned. Goodness it was like listening to one of those songs about sex on the radio.
Eventually they died down and she realized he may have started to does off. “How are you feeling?”
“Much better.” He reached one hand awkwardly back to take hers, running his thumb over her knuckles. Jemma did a second pass of the tenser spots and was just working her way over his shoulders when she was dislodged from her seat as he rolled over. “Thank you.”
Jemma leaned back against his propped-up legs. “Anytime.” The look on his face said it all. She had won this round.
At least she thought so, until once more she was tossed off balance as Fitz sat up abruptly and toppled her backwards on to their pillows, sealing their lips together in the process.
Perhaps this one would end in a draw.
Jemma placed the perfectly wrapped box on Fitz’s desk, drawing his attention from the Icer he was running maintenance on. It was a last-ditch attempt. She was running out of ideas that didn’t involve asking for time off or an increase in pay.
“What’s this?”
“Just a little gift.”
“But it’s not-“
“I don’t need an occasion to get you a gift Fitz,” she said, cutting him off before he could finish his objection. “I just wanted too.”
“Really-okay that’s good to know.” He stood from his chair. “Come with me then.”
“What about-“ He scooped up the gift, took her hand and nearly dragged her out of the lab and back to the bunks. “Fitz what are we doing?” Jemma asked with a slight bit of irritation as her gift was practically ignored.
“You’ll see.”
He shuffled around their bunk until he retrieved a small wrapped present as well. “It was sort of an impulse buy but I thought eventually I’d have an occasion to give them to you but since you said we don’t really need an occasion-“
Jemma’s irritation quickly faded, the competition falling out of mind briefly at the sight of the tiny package. “Thank you Fitz, come on lets open them at the same time.”
They each took a seat on the edge of the bed, gifts poised in their laps. “one, two, three…”Jemma slowly opened her gift, more interested in seeing Fitz reaction to hers. He had enthusiastically ripped away the shiny blue paper. Inside was a box set of documentaries and a monkey mug with all the ingredients for some old fashion hot cocoa nestled inside.
“Jemma this is great, I’ve been wanting to watch these since we saw the Amazon documentary, the team that works on them is genius.”
“I’m quite excited myself, they received raving reviews.”
“Why don’t we watch the first one now, I’ll go boil some water if you-hey you need to finishing opening yours.”
“What?” Oh that’s right. Her gift still say in her lap half wrapped. She tugged off the rest of the paper, revealing a jewelry case. Her stomach swooped and sunk all at once. Oh, she was excited, certainly, but something told her she’d just lost the final round. She lifted the lid of the box to reveal a set of sparkling gold studs.”
“Oh they’re beautiful.”
“Really? Cause I wasn’t really sure, I know you don’t care for bracelets because they hang in the way and you’re so attached to that old watch of yours and you seem to really like the necklace I got you since you wear it so often a new one seemed unnecessary and these kind of matched it so-“ Jemma looked up at him with watery eyes. Damn him he’d done it again.
She took her face in his hands and pulled him into a kiss. “Why must you be so damn competitive you sweet man.”
Fitz stared back at her uncertainly. “What are you talking about?”
“Oh please Fitz, the dinner, the letter, the jewelry, the sex?”
Fitz’s jaw dropped. “Jemma I truly have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“You’re just trying to prove that you’re the more romantic one, out doing me every time I turn around.”
“When, when am I doing this?”
“Oh don’t act so innocent!” Jemma exclaimed. “First I leave you a little note purely because I was feeling extra affectionate that morning and then you leave me that beautiful letter.”
“Of course I did! I wanted to tell you how much I agreed with you but I didn’t think I’d see you at all that day and I really wanted you to get your sleep.” He explained.
“Okay fine well what about dinner, from my favorite restaurant and that dessert.”
He only shrugged. “A thank you for the sandwich, you’ve always told me it’s a pain to make.”
“But a three course meal is hardly the same thing.”
“You’re right all I had to was dial the phone and run down the street to pick it up, you make such a fuss with that sandwich I can’t believe you ever bother.”
“I bothered because I was trying to be romantic.” “Spending time together working on those designs, that massage I gave you the other night.”
“You do those sorts of things all the time.”
“Yes well you don’t always go through such lengths to one up me, jogging, honestly you can’t stand it and I’ve told you I don’t mind-“
“It was the biggest chunk of time I could think of to add to our time together.”
“And the sex, you really weren’t in any condition-“
“I just wanted to make you feel as good as you made me feel and I’m not nearly as good as giving massages so it seemed like a fair exchange.”
She fell back on the bed, covering her eyes with her arm. “Fantastic so even when you’re not trying you’re the more romantic one.” The mattress shifted underneath her when Fitz laid down next to her.
“Actually, I think the award for more unconsciously romantic goes to you.”
“Oh, and how’s that then?”
“You’re a cuddler.”
“A what?”
“A cuddler,” he draped an arm over her waist and pulled her closer, “every night even if you’ve already dozed off before I even come into the room, I’m in bed not two minutes and you’ve curled yourself all around me like a cat or something and you’re asleep the whole time. I’ve even kicked you away, unintentionally of course- you know how much I have to spread out but you just latch on tighter, honestly you’ll take us both to the floor one of these days.” She still wasn't convinced. "I think its extremely romantic that you can sleep like that, that you want to be that close to me."
Jemma looked at him uncertainly. He was holding her so close she had to really crane her neck to see his face. The view made it worth it, just his loving blue eyes staring down into hers. Finally, she let out a short laugh.
“What?”
“It’s nothing, I just think if that’s the case then instead of the award reading most unconsciously romantic it should read most romantic while unconscious.” Fitz let out a barking laugh and pulled her over until she laid on top of him.
“I love you.”
She rested her head on his chest with a contented sigh. “I love you too, I’m sorry I turned your kind gestures into a competition.”
“No big deal, now that I know what’s going on I can really fight back, prepare to be wooed."

48 Recipes for 2017 (1/2)
r In my attempt to come up with 12 different cuisines I’d like to try making for 2017, I accidentally came up with 24. I picked 4 for each, even though this only leads to 48/52 weeks each year I’m fine with that, it gives me wiggle room or an off day. Here’s the first year!
I randomized the list so here’s what I’ve got! Feel free to tell me your favorite dishes/recommendations if you have any and I’ll work them in.
January 2017: Vietnamese - Kinda funny that I’m starting with this one, as I probably know the least about it other than pho and banh mi; the former of which I’ve been craving for weeks and the latter of which I’m.... not a fan orz.
1. Bò Kho- Because who would I be if I didn’t start off 2017 with a beef stew 2. Phở - Let me live alright........ 3. Canh Bap Cai Nhoi Thit - Stuffed cabbage soup, as cabbage is something I’ve learned that I like in the past year or so. Will probably combine with next one to fit 4 in one month 4. Gỏi cuốn - Spring rolls, which is leading me to realize: Considering I’ve never been a pork, shrimp, or seafood person, I might have to start looking into vegetarian recipes more often. Will probably replace pork with chicken and avoid/omit seafood :S
Febuary 2017: Swedish - I’m not gonna lie, I know next to nothing about Sweden too. Hey tho isn’t this an opportunity for me to learn more about these cultures? Although, it seems like a lot of these seem to call for lingonberry jam on the side, not something I foresee being available in Bing so I might ask my mom to go to IKEA and send me some up (also subtly planting the idea of going to IKEA forwhen she goes furniture shopping for her new apartment huehuehe)
1. Köttbullar - Swedish meatballs...... listen. Will hopefully make these for myself on valentines day 2. Jansson’s Temptation - Apparently a christmas dish, will probably swap anchovies out for capers. 3. Ärtsoppa - Yellow split pea soup 4. Pitepalt - this one seems a bit too simple, but hey. Scandinavian food. I found a recipe that calls for bacon so that should at least be nice.
March 2017: Greek - oh fuck yes im gonna eat bread with olive oil at every goddamn meal. ive never been a huge fan of olives but for the sake of authenticity i’ll probably keep them in at the first recipe. 1. Tzatziki - I always thought this was an Israeli invention but im not surprised it’s greek. a childhood classic 2. Greek Salad - Will probably go with the leftover tzatziki ill inevitably have LOL 3. Moussaka - i’m kind of neutral about eggplants but this is a staple and looks pretty damn good 4. Baklava - i have a feeling this wont come out great when i make it and thats okay LOL
April 2017: Argentinian - A close family friend grew up there, and my brother spent a year teaching English here, which is why I want to include it here. 1. Asado - i dont know how i can pull off barbeque in a tiny apartment but apparently it’ll be a crime not to include this argentinian staple 2. Carbonada - did you guys kno? i love...... stew 3. Choripán - sausage is a weird thing that i ignore my usual dietary choices for, i blame my parents. plus i have such a weakness for street food (well, it’s not street food if you make it in your kitchen but you know what i mean) 4. Chimichurri - Realistically? I will probably make this with the asado, since spring break is in april and i doubt ill be cooking thatweek
May 2017: Soul Food - Distinct enough from american food (another month), I’ve never really been south of the Mason Dixon Line. I have at least 2 friends who I know would recommend/swap out a recipe for me here. 1. Hushpuppies - these look........ amazing...... (im gonna toss scallion in. let me live) 2. Black eyed peas & Cornbread - 2 for one because these are both “mom” foods in a way and i’m not sure if either would entirely satisfy my hunger on their own 3. Chicken and Waffles - okay feel free to drag me but ive never had this there i said it (deep frying is also a process that scares me but all of 2017 will be filled with fear so) 4. Oxtails with gravy - maybe throw some collard greens in? idk man
June 2017: Moroccan - I had to actively balance the overlap between Mediterranean and israeli foods here too. 1. Chickpea Stew - coriander seems to be a popular spice in moroccan food! 2. Lamb Tagine - I knew I had to include lamb, it was between this and kebabs, but I’ll save those for later hehe 3. Chicken Marrakesh - again, more chickpeas! 4. Maghrebi mint tea - It’s odd to consider tea it’s own recipe, in the middle of summer no less, but I think the cultural significance makes up for it
July 2017: Colombian - rip to my crush on the immaculate alex carillo. see you space cowboy.... regardless i wanted more central and south american cuisine 1. Arroz con coco - simple yet elegant? 2. Empanada - im just praying i dont butcher it yaknow 3. Sudado de Pollo - speaks for itself here 4. Bandeja Paisa - I feel like this is one i will probably make with/eat with friends
August 2017: Filipino - I texted claude and got a response back within seconds this was the easiest one to find dishes for 1. Lumpia - excellent 2. Pancit - cabbage, chicken, noodles hell yes 3. Chicken adobo - this speaks for itself 4. Sisig - Claude mentioned lechon but i don’t really look forward to pork.... why am i such a picky eater...... anyway im always a fan of sizzling meat
September 2017: Cajun - This is really just me admitting that I want more of the holy trinity (green bell pepper, onion, celery) in my life 1. Po’ Boy - Sloppy roast beef sandwich? 2. Brochette - Some form of skewer, will have to find a specific recipe 3. Gumbo - Will have to make sure I can get okra for this? 4. Jambalaya - Crystal’s favorite! The one she made was fantastic and Iwant her recipe
October 2017: Italian - I originally split this into two months, emphasizing on pizza and pasta. after some strong encouragement and scorn (??) i’ve decided to look up other italian dishes and make the second month “american food” 1. Risotto - I accidentally made this once and i want to do it justice, in the name of milan 2. Bruschetta - Pat and Caroline have made really good bruschetta several times so perhaps ill hit them up 3. Sicilian - This is vague because I’m gonna ask andrew! one of my favorite biochemists and culinary aficionados 4. Gnocchi - I have a feeling this is gonna be a pain in the ass but i love it so it’ll be well worth it
November 2017: Persian - I’m expecting a lot of rice pilafs and saffron here 1. Kebab - chicken? lamb? the world’s my oyster, i just wanna do something classic here 2. Ash-e jow - I’ve never had barley soup but i do love both of those things! 3. Fesenjan - Same reasoning but pomegranate soup! 4. Tahdig - crunchy fried rice
December 2017: Ukrainian - This one is timed nicely because Polina’s birthday is the 17th! I’ll probably convince her to cook with me each time hehehe 1. Chicken kiev - another classic 2. Varenyky - Ukrainian variation of pirogi (I decided to leave polish food out of this mix) 3. Holubtsi - The beautiful cabbage rolls I’ve grown to love, like tamales but you also eat the outer portion 4. Green borscht - sadly, i’ve made borscht and didn’t like it (beets aren’t my thing) but this version doesn’t contain beets!
