Studio IV - Actual Reality
Week 13…
Monday (22-10-18)
Due to the long weekend, I was quite happy to have this extra time to work on my visual design ideas. My main tasks were to design the final app pages, as well as work on the business cards and poster for the Showcase. Over the weekend, I sent some design ideas on our messenger group chat to get feedback from Carol and Shades, and we finally decided upon the Logo for our app.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After finishing all of the designs, I decided to do some more research on augmented reality, app design and development and visual design as I realised that I didn’t go back to researching after the mid-semester break. It was also important for me to look at more credible references as this would help me write a better conceptual and contextual statement, which we will start working on this week.
                           ————————————————————
Tuesday (2310-18)
In Studio today, I was prepared and ready to work. I gave all the final app pages to Carol, so she could import them into the app. Overall, I was really happy with the design concept for the app, because it was clean, consistent and related to Auckland City.
In terms of the AR models, Carol shared her design files with me, so I could work on Fusion 360 to improve them in some way. I decided to work on the Bar Counter model because it seemed a little empty. By adding another Whisky Bottle, a few glasses, and a towel on the bench, as well as changing the texture, I think the model seemed quite complete. Although the back of the Counter was a little under-developed, so Carol added a few more Alcohol Bottles and glasses in the empty space, to complete the look.

Check out all of the Augmented Reality models below:

So, the app is finally complete!! We had chosen a series of background music from YouTube, and Shades had managed to finish the audio content to a good quality. The augmented reality models, design by Carol, were also completed to a high quality and worked well with the stories. Now, all we needed to do was start videoing and writing our final statements…

Wednesday (24-10-18)
As we had planned today, we wend out for recording our Curiosity Guide video. Initially, Shades was going to model in the video, however due to her moon boot, we thought it wouldn’t be the best aesthetic. So, Carol volunteered to act in the video, with Shades as the Camerawoman, and me as the Director.
We started with Level 3 at AUT, and walked down to the Town Hall, videoing different angles and backgrounds on the way. The main purpose of our video is to showcase the functionality of the app in the outside world, because the users wouldn’t be able to experience this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Reflection on Action:
The overall videoing was done in an hour and a half, however we faced a few challenges on the way. Firstly, we should have chosen someone to act in the video beforehand, because it would have a better impact than to show one of the Creators. However, 5 days before the deadline is a difficult time to ask someone for a favour, so we had to finalise Carol.
Next, I think that we should have tried different camera angles and background shots before today, to ensure that the places we show are interesting and relevant to the app and the stories. However, we didn’t have enough time to experiment, so we chose to walk down past WT Tower and take that route towards the Town Hall, which gave us a few good shots. I also think that we should have kept recording along the way, because some transitions are difficult to show and this may affect the outcome of the video. But, we did get many camera movements of Carol walking.
In terms of my Direction, I should have given it more thought, because the weather and time of day has an effect on the quality of the video. I also didn’t manage to guide Carol properly, which resulted in her acting freely. This may affect the final result of the video and may cause problems during the editing stage, because her movements aren’t connected.
During the videoing, we were lucky to not have encountered so many people in the way, because the City wasn’t that busy, which gave us space to record openly. It was also helpful for us as we were able to re-record a few shots. Overall, there were certain aspects of the video-recording that could have happened differently, but I think we did a good job with the knowledge we had. What I have learned through this process is to be better prepared and do a few test recording to ensure a better quality video. Next time, I will also put more thought into the camera angles, transitions and direction aspects because they are quite important to the video.
                          ————————————————————
Thursday (25-10-18)
Today, we continued working on the Conceptual and Contextual Statements for the Submission. We started with the statements yesterday afternoon after video recording, but didn’t get very far. Yesterday, we worked on different parts of the Conceptual Statement individually so we could bullet point all our ideas and write down everything that we need to include, however this method didn’t really work for us because we weren’t talking to each other or expressing our thoughts.
Today, Shades suggested that we all sit together, with one person typing the statements and the other two telling them what to write. I didn’t think that it was the most effective way of writing because personally, I can’t type without thinking about the sentences, or I can’t speak proper sentences without typing them while I’m thinking. But, I agreed that we should give it a go, as we need to finish these by tomorrow, and our working speed is a little slow at the moment. Carol wasn’t really keen to try this method, so we sat in silence again, working on our own parts.
To be honest, we have had many group clashes and problems throughout this Semester, and I’m finding it difficult to side with one member of the group because Carol and Shades are both on the opposite ends of the spectrum, which makes it difficult for us to agree on many decisions. Our group dynamic has changed completely since the beginning of the Semester, and that is affecting our work output.
Anyway, we still haven’t completed any of the Statements, and are still unaware of which method to follow for writing them, but we will have to work together to do this. I was thinking about writing mine separately and then showing the group to see how we can combine our ideas, but I didn’t manage to get that done. Instead, I worked on a rough cut of the Curiosity Guide video, to show Carol and Shades tomorrow. I was having troubles with Adobe Premiere Pro on my Laptop, so I used iMovie to do this, however, I will be using Adobe to edit the final video.
Tumblr media
                           ———————————————————
Friday (26-10-18) Today, our main task was also to work on the Statements. We have completed the App, which is our Project, but documentation is something we all have to work on. So the statements that we need to write should explain the purpose of our Project a well as demonstrate where our App sits in the wider industry.
For the past two days, we have been working on different parts of the Conceptual and Contextual Statements, which has made it difficult for us to combine our work together. We have been using Google Docs and leaving comments on other’s work to express our thoughts. Another problem we have been facing is to agree on the words and terminology for some of our concepts. This is affecting the speed of our work, hence it’s taking us longer to finish. I don’t know how we should write this, of which method to follow so that we all can contribute to this, but we will get there…
vimeo
Anyway, I also showed Shades and Carol the rough cut of the video, and they both seemed to like it. Shades suggested that I cut it shorter by reducing some of the walking time, and I agree that the walking goes on for too long. There are also other adjustments to make, so I will finish this video over the weekend.
Over the weekend to-do list: - Finish editing the final Curiosity Guide Video - Finish the Curiosity Guide Poster - Finish Conceptual Statement - Finish Contextual Statement - Finish Reflection Statement - Finish Blogging - Finish designing the Business Cards (to send for printing next week) - Finish set-up for Submission

Taking a moment to reflect on Filmmaking Principles for Instructional Design
Filmmaking Principles for Instructional Design both challenged me and inspired me. Below you will find my detailed reflections on the experiences I went through as I worked on the two projects in the course.
youtube
Project One: Jedis Unite! A How-to-video for making a lightsaber out of everyday materials
youtube
Project Two: Creating a Story: Conflict Resolution
Reflect
Throughout this process of filmmaking, I kept myself open to feedback and any guidance others had to offer. For this course, I completed submissions of two instructional video projects.
Project One spanned over four weeks, and included a three part process.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Part 1, we learned to create and work with storyboards for an instructional video project as a means of planning and communicating the compositions of shots, as well as the concepts, content, and the sequencing of information to others prior to beginning the actual video production process. But where to begin? We were instructed to head over to WikiHow.com and take a look at some how to videos. I knew that I wanted to find something that would be enjoyable, but also provide a challenge. The topic I chose….How to build a lightsaber from everyday items found around your home. This helped me to narrow down my target audience to Star Wars fans of all ages who also like crafting. The storyboard would act as a guide for our filmmaking process, as well as was to be designed in a way that if we were to work with a crew/team, they would have ease of access to the expectations of narration, lighting, camera positioning, and sound effects and music to be used. While I had experience using Storyboards in the past, this was something new, and much more detailed. I had to think of things from a number of perspectives, as well as consider how with green screen technology I would have to set things up and still get the angled views I hoped to achieve. The planning went well, as well as the photo shoot to demonstrate the angles I would be looking to capture footage from. This led to thoughts about sound effects, music, and imagery that I wanted to include. I searched and found the imagery I wanted to use on videoblocks.com and the sound effects and some music on audioblocks.com.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For Part 2, we focused in on the editing process with the goal of producing high quality instructional videos. During this stage I learned about and practiced the process of creating a rough-cut video, then developed an intermediate cut video that would be taken into final production. This experience was full of trials and tribulations, especially in regard to the footage captured and lighting. I followed my storyboard plan, and set up cameras to catch footage, utilized family to help with camera and sound capture, and began the process of filming. While there were no issues during the process, when I went to review the footage later, I found that I was too far from the camera, and that equipment was peeking in on the edges of some of the footage and could not be removed. I also felt that the quality captured could be improved upon. I made the difficult but right decision to re-shoot all footage, to rethink lighting and angles and how best to capture what I was aiming for. In the end, the footage I captured for the intermediate cut was much better, sound quality remained excellent due to the wireless mic system I used, and now it was just a task to edit down what I had captured. For the intermediate cut, I had one other hiccup, as I was rendering from Adobe Premiere Pro in order to turn in my submission, something went wrong, and footage disappeared. I had to move forward for the submission, but I knew I would have more work to come for the fine-cut and final submission.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then came the final part, where we learned about and practiced the final stages of the production process in creating a high quality instructional video. For this stage I would learn more about chroma keying in Adobe Premiere Pro than ever before, as well as worked to edit the video down to the time required. The timing and story turned out to be a challenge for me. When I turned to my cohorts, they gave me great ideas of how I could combine some of the video pieces in a side by side view in order to help trim the video to the time required. Additionally, I received some feedback about the title, and how a subtitle might better lead Star Wars Crafters to understand that this was a How to video just waiting for them to try out!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the second project in the course, there was a completely different experience. Scenarios are frequently used in filmmaking for instructional purposes to help the audience understand the learning materials being presented. For this project, I worked with a series of video snippets that had already been filmed, researched the topic of conflict resolution, and organized the clips and added narration to create a story that supported an instructional module on the topic of conflict resolution. With the video provided, I felt that the focus of the topic should be that regarding individuals that were in a relationship. I did struggle for a while to think of what the story was that I wanted to develop and how it could drive the learning. I thought of how I could manipulate the film, cause pauses to bring emphasis in places to the message I was trying to share. I scripted out the narration and captured the audio in a sound booth with a high quality mic system. A cohort reviewed my initial submission and gave me the suggestion to add in short, bulleted text that would be extremely helpful to the audience. They felt it would not cause cognitive overload if it was done during the freeze-frame as dual channels could still be used to absorb the information.
Inquiry
For the first project, some of the concepts/techniques that I need to revisit would be that of how to hone my story down. I did well on most accounts, but had room for improvement in the areas of theoretical application and acquiring competencies. Length proved to be a challenge, as well as camera angles needed to be better represented within the intermediate cut. This was an area that I worked on toward the final iteration. I believe that working to trim the remaining video that I used for final submission by combining moments next to one another with use of a split screen effect may get me to a new level.
For the second project, I would want to run it by some additional reviewers/learners and get further feedback. Could I adjust the narration to help it feel less rushed? How could I keep the essence of my message and decrease the narration?
Suggest
If I had more time, I would have gone back and worked on Project 1 to further trim the film, to get it within the required time frame. I would have revisited the narration that I originally wrote and determined if there were adjustments that I could make to be more clear or precise in areas and shorten but keep the story whole. For Project 1, I received feedback on the title being a little misleading, and that if I included a subtitle pointing out that this was a How-to video it would be better. I would have taken the time to add this in and finalize the film. With Project 2, if I had more time, I would have re-recorded the narration after finding a way to shorten the narration without losing the story.
Elevate
I know there is always room for improvement in anything I do. For future projects, I will always be mindful of the amount of time editing takes and allow for a wider time frame to work on editing. This would allow time to view, review, view again, as well as get that much more feedback on ways to improve and be able to have the time to apply it. I truly enjoyed what I designed and developed, and look forward to more opportunities in the future to continuously develop and hone these skills.

Getting ready to wrap up filming today with the team for our final studio submission coming up later on in the month!
Such a pleasure to work with these two, we’ve really worked hard together and sticking to our original plans to make sure the work flow keeps going consistently.
I feel like we’ve formed our team really well, we all have different roles to play. Tim and I will work together to film the footage, and we both have different strengths within premier pro so we can share the workload when it comes to editing. I’ve completed writing up the brief, creating the poster, and doing the a4 print out. Nikita and Tim will work on recording sounds for the soundscape, and editing the sounds together... then we should be ready to wrap it all up and hand in on the 14th if not the day before!
- My photography during the process of filming around Auckland
Here’s the brief I wrote up for our team:
Final Studio Project – semester one
-        Title of film: Light within the darkness
-        Intention of film: Immersive experience of film, colour and sound that reflects the emotions caused by cyber bullying in the modern world.
Message for our film: “Cyber bullying is a traumatizing experience for young people to go through, and you aren’t as alone as you may feel you are”.
-PLOT- The film starts off with our main character, a teenage girl going through the life of university living with her flatmates, doing what most girls do these days – posting images of themselves on social media giving free and open access to the world of it. After she posts this image, she starts getting hurtful messages from people she doesn’t know who don’t like her photo. Over a few weeks’ time, the harassment of messages and hurtful words increase. We show how it emotionally affects the teenager through her body language and isolation. We use darker colours to set her mood, so our viewers feel as gloomy and alone as she does.
Our second character, the caring friend, starts to make an appearance by trying to communicate with our harassed teenager through text messages, but our teenager doesn’t acknowledge the help she has around her. Eventually we reach the climax of the film, where our teenager is feeling extreme depression to the point where she can’t find any way to keep enduring it. Our second character rescues our teenager from her trauma, and comforts her.
Week one:
-        Research a theme; we chose to use bullying through social media (cyberbullying).
As a group, we chose a relatable theme for our film that most people today have heard of, or have experienced themselves in some way shape or form. At this point in the brief, we researched what bullying and cyber bullying actually is in general and in New Zealand. We found that cyberbullying was the more common method of bullying today as majority of people have access to some form of technological device, and it makes it easy to attack somebody through social media and over a text message than it is to harass somebody in person. Along side this we found that victims of cyber bullying don’t reach out for the help that is available to them today. As found in our research, we found that most victims don’t share what is going on with anybody including their parents. So in our film we wanted to show how bullied victims don’t attempt to open up about what is happening to them and how they’re feeling, and what it can result in when it is chewing them up inside over time.
-        Draft our ideas we want shown in the film, and put together a story board:
We wrote down our main ideas we wanted to portray in the film. We didn’t want the film to be overly complicated and too difficult for people to relate to. We came up with the idea of using certain colours in our film, specific sound/music to trigger certain feelings, symbols, expressions and gestures to represent different emotions that people could relate to so that our message in our film could be interpreted correctly. With these thoughts in mind, we drafted our story board together. Drawing each scene frame by frame so we could film it easily, and writing exactly what is happening, with which colours, sounds and symbols we should use to show the correct emotion in each scene.
-        Draft sound ideas for the film:
We wanted the sound in our film to be just as significant as our video. Because our video has no dialogue other than text bubbles, we knew the sounds that people were hearing while watching this film were important to the overall atmosphere we are trying to create. Rather than having straight music, we wanted to create a soundscape using specific sounds and tones we recorded ourselves. The purpose for this is so that the sound focusses on giving people a certain feeling as they are watching the video, rather than stealing a cliche happy song from an artist.
We wanted to use a combination of light, warm, happy sounds for the first part of the film that slowly transitions into a more airy, dark, and cold atmosphere as the video gets more intense.
-        Blog:
Write a blog post about our initial ideas and story board in preparation for filming next week.
Week Two:
-        Filming groups of different scenes per day:
For our own peace of mind, we assigned each scene with a letter so that we could film specific ‘letters’ on different days. This was our schedule:
-        Saturday/Apartment – Film scenes A,B,C,H,I,N,O,P,L,M
-        Monday/University – Film scenes D,E,F,J,K
-        Tuesday/Apartment -  Film scenes Q,R,G,S,V,W
-        Wednesday/Train - Viaduct – Film scenes T,U,X,Y
-        Thursday/High street – Film last block of end scenes
-        Friday –  refilm anything that needs to be done / extra time for scenes.
-        Blog: Write a blog and post stills of our filming content in preparation for collaboration of audio and video next week.
Week Three:
-        Crop scenes, and piece together the video content:
Select the clips that are useable in our film and crop them to size within Premiere Pro.
-        Record sounds and begin to piece together the soundscape:
Record our own sounds, and have a play with some that are available on youtube. Mix them together through ableton to create our soundscape.
-        Add bubble text and final effects to video in preparation for audio
Screenshot physical texts and bring them into Premiere Pro to show examples of being cyberbullied by random strangers. Adjust the colours used in the film and add effects to make the film run more smoothly with more detail.
-        Attach audio to video
Integrate the audio with the video content and make sure tones are in time and make sense with the emotions we want portrayed within the film.
-        Get ready for submission:
Make sure our film is compatible with the BCT computers and can run seamlessly over the two day showcase period.
-        Blog:
Write a blog post about the summary of our film and the process we went through to film it.
