I think it's cool that Sega is now letting the comic characters be referenced in their games and other media, even having them be playable characters in the app games, I know it sucks that they couldn't do the same with archie characters especially since the Archie characters have been around longer but that's because Sega owns the IDW characters while Archie owned the Archie characters. (The only exception is Sticks but Sega actually brought her ownership)

i thought that sega does own some of the archie characters (or at the very least could use them if they wanted to) and are just intentionally choosing to place them off limits forever for some reason. like i could have sworn i heard they own the main freedom fighters at the very least but idk im no expert on that. also im a bit confused on sticks being labelled as an archie character yeah she was in some stuff made by archie but she was created for sonic boom and isnt just in the tv show shes in the games too. therefore shes a game character even if shes mostly only appeared in an alternate universe that doesnt get new content anymore

i really wish there werent so much drama surrounding Shadow's characterization and I really wish Sega would just make the multi-timeline thing canon rather than trying to tie together every canon into one universe via silly one-off references and shit because I honest to god really like every version of Shadow (besides the obscure and out-there Archie variants), just... not as one dude. Like every version of Shadow I see as a different whole guy. Like the different Links thing with Legend of Zelda, just with different timelines and universes rather than generational or whatever.

Like Adventure-Era Shadow is the most mature of the bunch, and the most relaxed overall, probably the most soft-spoken too. In-between we'd have the pre-Modern Modern Shadow, that really weird phase between Boom and Adventure-Era I think? Where he became more iffy, like an emo teenager or some shit. Then we have Boom!Shadow, the most immature of them, probably the one with the most repressed problems and emotional issues. Adventure Shadow acts as a tough-love older sibling to him. Then there's Forces Shadow, which I don't know enough about tbh to make many solid ideas. We have IDW Shadow, he's the one who stays away from the group most and does shit on his own, however from time to time he will interact a bit with inter-Modern Shadow and Adventure Shadow (he sees Boom!Shadow as a plain idiot, but does admittedly respect his guts when the other two see Boom as being too unrestrained). Then there's Modern-Modern, who I'll dub "Kirk Shadow", since that would be more of how Shadow is depicted specifically by Kirk himself. He's the "softest" one beside Adventure Shadow, and he and Adventure Shadow are buddies. He's also more mature than most of the others emotionally, he thinks deeply about topics while still having a good sense of humor. He's a tad vain, but it's unknown if that's purely to annoy Sonic or not. Then there's Prime!Shadow, who is entirely different in that he's actually quite mature like Adventure Shadow, and has many of the same ideals, but he's a lot more gruff and direct and also just doesnt fucking communicate right. Like many of them dont but he's the worst offender. He's overall chill, a bit less cocky than the others, but also doesnt hesitate to put people in their places when needed.

See? See Sega? It's not that fucking hard to just seperate Shadows. We can have many. We can have different takes on his character. We need that for all of them tbh, similarly to Shadow, Amy and Sonic, and even Tails, have different types of characters depending on what continuity they come from. Just make it canon that there ARE different ones, because that means writers and artists can EXPERIMENT with them more, and thats FUN!!! That's literally why fanfics are so popular, because people experiment with character dynamics and traits and say "what if?" and then go with it!

anyway i was pretty excited to just have something after months of not getting anything, so even if it was short and still a teaser rather than an actual trailer, i really liked it!! the visuals, animation, and fight choreography are sick and i already ADORE deven mack as sonic <3 ive also always been a sucker for stories about multiple universes so im just really looking forward to prime in general

though im going to go off on a bit of a tangent here so dont read if you dont want to hear this: ive been growing weary of shadow discourse for a while but this teaser was really the catalyst to me realizing just how much i fucking hate all the arguments that surround his character! id be lying if i said that certain peoples reactions werent a major factor contributing to the already shitty week i was having. inb4 im not trying to disrespect anyone or their opinions whatever they may be so please dont take this as a personal attack but i truly despise how sonic and shadow cant fight for 5 seconds on screen (with no context!) without this widespread panic that hes just going to be a pointless rival. you know, even though he and sonic have always fought? because their personalities clash? because they have different methods of handling problems that arise? theyve BEEN fighting aklsdjflas the only time shadow fought sonic just to spite him was in boom and boom!shadow does not count. say what you want about boom!shadow but he does. not. count. other medias like sonic x and idw all had them fight with actual stakes involved which is perfectly fine and normal and how conflict usually works

at this point i just want sega to come out and explain their entire agenda with shadow post-06 is (as well as how they see him in comparison to everything before that) like i know thats not gonna happen and obviously it wont stop people from disagreeing with the direction theyve taken him in (and again its fine if they do), but at least everyone could finally be on the same page. because with the way things currently are, theres no way someone can give their opinion on how they perceive shadows character (no matter what it is or how much evidence they have to back it up) without being called media illiterate by people who have just as easily disputable interpretations. i personally would love to talk extensively about how i see him and explain why that is the case but i wont because i dont want annoying people setting off my anxiety by accusing me of not understanding the fictional hedgehog <333

Summary: you end up in middle earth , only to fall for the dwarven king.

It was a day in July , well night you had fell asleep in your bed in your room on your n/o/p ,nice and toasty. You had been dreaming about eating a nice bunch of chips , golden thick potatoes. They tasted like keanu reeves love in a potato. oh how you wish to real live that, but you were roughly awoke by something prickly poking you. "Five more minutes ,mummy /mommy/mama." You groaned as the thing stopped poking you, you felt rough ground stabbing your back as you rolled over.

You felt under you with your left hand to only to feel your mattress sheet not your mattress , and just your fluffy blanket you used in the summer instead of the duvet somethings. You slowly opened your eyes , as the bright light hit your eyes , causing you to groan again rubbing your eyes to make them focus. When you opened them again you were faced with a bunch of short men and an old man and an even shorter man. You look at them wide eye, as hatted dwarf held a stick that poked you they look at you in confusion some held weapons.

"Why are you in my room?!" You had almost shouted , grabbing a pillow holding it up in defence,you looked pretty bad,what you gonna do braid eachothers hair and have a pillow fight. Its only lucky that you had put your new pair of shoes in their box on the other side of your bed ,with socks so you could cherish them. Well be ready for the next day,to wear them inside.Little did you know would be travelling with these short men,due to the wizards say so. "uh,lass this is the forest." the short man with the stick and hat had spoken up causing you to gasp when noticed you were in a forest,and so was your bed,you could ony come up with answer to this mess...

"HElp! I've been kidnapped." you had shouted,remove your blanket pulling on your socks and shoes ,standing up,before you can run the majestic hair dwarf shouts. "circle her lads," and with that a barrier of short men surround you. You stood on your bedding ,luckily in clean shoes ,and your night clothes aka a strappy top,with your favourite tv show characters on it,and the shorts that come with,and yeah they are short. You were exposed by strange men ,and you didnt like that,your bust on show and yours ass if you bent over. Thats what she said.

You picked up your blanket ,placing the pillow down,wrapping it around you ,to cover youself. "what do you want from me?" you had spoke anooyed by the sitution,though the majestic man was quite the looker,if you were honest."your the only that fell out of the sky,what do you want?" A short ginger one had growled ,pissed off."what Gloin is trying to say is that we never touched you ,Dwalin was on watch when you fell ,we do not know how you didnt wake up from the impact." the shoretest man that reminded you very much of John waston from sherlock.

You didnt know what to think of the sitution ,then the man that was apparently a wizard spoke to you and the majestic man privately,saying that he was going to try get you home ,after you admitted you never had heard of Rohan ,or erebor or middle earth,concluding you werent from this world. So basically the wizard you know as now Gandalf is forcing this other dude who is a dwarf , a dwarf! Can you believe it? on this journey to reclaim his home ,he wasnt impressed but soon enough he agreed.

Gandalf had forced the company to stop at a small village :so he could buy you clothes,a tooth brush,cleaning supplies and womanly products,you had thanked him dearly. You now wore ,your small trainers with these legging pants and a tunic plus a coat but it was too hot for that right now,during the day anyways. Then you all were back on the road ,and you would have to share a pony with one of the dwarves,which ended up with you sharing with Thorin's youngest nephew.

It didnt take much for you to lift yourself up on the pony,well actually you just swung your leg up and boom you sat upon it as kili mounts behind you struggling a bit. "damn ,miss y/n those are some long legs." he had smirked from behind ,you felt like he was going to be doing a lot of flirting. "uh yeah ,puberty does that sometimes." you spoke gripping the rains of the pony lightly,as the company began to move.your coat in your new bag on the side of the pony hanging,leaving you in your tunic and pants,kili pushed at against you back,one arm around your waist.

"I would sure love to get lost in them." his grip tightened a little,as fili laughed at his brothers remark,your face screwed up."..uh...how long do dwarves live generally?" you questioned,to anyone in ear range. "around 200-250 years ,lassie." Bofur spoke up behind you ,you hummed in response. "and how old are you kili?" Thorin was listening in on the conversation as the whole company had went silent to hear it too. "77." he was confused at what you were gettingat ,he was a little scared even.

"right so the average human lives for 80 years ,right. So if you was to date or court me ,i'll be dead before you mature." bilbo laughed at you ,with some of the others. "what are you getting at?" he stated his face like pink with embarrassment. "if i was to get with any dwarf ,they would be older."you had smirked thinking of someone in mind,Thorin smiled to himself only Dwalin was able to see,he smirked at him,for Thorin to give him a look which almost told him to drop it. Which he didnt later he would tease him.

Thorin had grew to like you more than a member of his company,in the past couple of weeks ,as did you he was very attractive how could you not. Now you were in Rivendell,in which Elrond had supplied the company with food as he talked to andalf about you.It concluded he had no idea how this could happen and then later they would talk to lady galadriel about it. she didnt have a clue,except galadriel thought there was a reason you were brought to this world and you should carry on with the company.

After that you had been led to your room,which had a bloody bath,oh my you were so glad about. Once you had finish you had wrapped a single towel around your body,going to get dressed ,at this point it was late at night everyone would have been asleep by now.However before you could even dress,your bag was gone,with all your clothes ,and an elf had taken your dirty ones when you had gotten in the bath. You had no clue what to do,you would not go to sleep naked in the elves guest bed,not that they werent clean,youjust never know whos been in there or done what.

You decided the best thing to do was go wondering around until you found someone,just in a towel and your shoes,wet hair sticking to your skin ,making you shiver. Opening the beautiful carved pine door,quietly ,before shutting it behind you walking down the hall. It was more than cold out in the hall,your room had a fire lit by the same elf that took your clothes. In honesty you knew you have to go ask onee of the dwarves if they had a spare tunic or something;but that was an incredibly awkward and emabarrassing.If you went fili he would tell kili and then they would tease you,kili would tell everyone how those legs looked in just his tunic,you didnt want it to happen and you didnt want them laughing at you.

Thorin.

You felt like you could trust him,but you felt like if he saw you like this he would never like you back,and you had developed big feelings for him. Even though you barely spoke,he would check on you regularly not when the others where around,when bathing in the rivers he would stand watch, Apparently just incase you drown ,or the others especially his nephews tried peeking or you got attacked. Some how he would know when you got your period he take your watch ,lay hot stones in your bed ,he even made you tea.Dwalin would grin,knowing his bestfriend deeply cared for the human from another world. Damn Thorin and those thic-

you were so deep in thought you didnt notices a figure walk out thier door as you walked down the hall,causing you crash into them. You had lost grip of the towel ,only for the figure to pull you against them holding the back of the towel up,pulling around your sides. You gasped,scared the figure had seen your breasts,but their actions were so sonic speed they hadnt and you were pressed against their muscular chest. You had looked up to see Thorin ,your eyes had widened,you had taken the sides of the towel wrapping around yourself again ,as Thorin looked away. "I-im so sorry." you had spoken stuttering slightly,looking at the floor,before going to walk away,but Thorin had gripped your arm stopping you. "what are doing out here,y/n,in just a towel." he had asked sternly,he thought you were to no good,if you get me,and he was not impressed.

"uh..well.um I had a bath went to get dressed but my bag was gone,so it turns out they had told me that they were going to gift me stuff..but they  must have used it for my measurements,okay so I dont know.All i do know is I am search of something to wear,Its freezing." you spoke still not sure on your own words,it didnt seem right that the elves would take all your clothes. "stupid bloody elves,just leave you naked to freeze to death.I have some spare clothes if you need them." he hated the elves more that they had taken your belonging ,yet didnt he liked the way your hair fell once wet and the shine on your skin from the now cold water.

You had nodded eagerly ,he hadled you into his room,guiding you to sit down in the chair next to the fire,whilst he got you cllothes.He had came back with only only his dark blue tunic,handing it to you."I'm sorry ,my spare trousers are currents drying since kili decided to jumped on me covering me in mud like a dog." he spoke turning around allowing you to dress quickly infront of the fire,you let out a small giggle. "its fine,you have helped me so much,i would be laughed at if i had ran into anyone else. Doesnt matter what anyone else says you are very nice dude. thank you so much,goodnight." you had hugged him,he stood there a little taken back at your words hugging you back wishing you goodnight as you went back to your room.

He had watched you leave ,he like seeing you in his tunic,which only reached barely your mid thigh. He knew he wouldnt be sleeping soon,he was glad you bumped into him and not anyone else,he already thought you were beautiful from your personality but now you were bodacious.

In the morning your clothes still hadnt turned up,and an elf had knocked informing you for breakfast ,so you had no choice but to try sort your hair and go to breakfast in just a tunic and shoes.You looked like you were really at home and sorta a whore. Not that it was your fault at all. You had walked there crossing your arms looking down ,mulitple gasps were heard as you arrived.You had quickly sat down to the closest open sit which turns out was next to Thorin. "lass where are your clothes?"

"yeah you are practially naked."

"damn those legs bend over for me." kili had smirked saying the second,only to be kicked hard under the table by thorin ,who you sent a smile to him thanking him.

"treat her with some respect,shes not some bloody toy." Thorin had spat angrily at his nephew ,who looked down in embarrassment. "BAHAHAH YOU MUST  BE SO EMBARRASSED." You were tempted to say,pointing at him while laughinghysterically at him,sound like someone? yeah i would show you a picture but he stands to still I cant see him."im sorry ,miss y/n," he spoken sincerely towards you. "itsfine,dont worry about it." you had stated you were embarrassed by the sitution too.

After a few minutes Dwalin decided to break the silence,"lass where are your clothes,seriously?" he asked,he knew that wasnt your shirt.Damn the elves appart from elrond ,and Lindir looked at you in disgust. "uh well,I actually dont know,i got of the bath and then asked couldnt find my bag anywhere." you spoke looking at the fruits that sat infront of you,eating a piece of mellon. "oh miss y/n,i had an extra bag in mine and kili's room,i didnt know where it was from. I'll go get it,it must be yours." and with that fili rushed off to get it fpr you,soon returning passing it to as you place it on the floor. "thank you,fili.2 he had sent you a smile that reminded you deeply of seth rogen ,you couldnt help but picture him as seth rogen if you thought of him,you didnt know why.

And with that everyone was back to eating breakfast;oh what until someone questioned you again. "wait is that uncles tunic?" kili had questioned you ,causing a small blush to apear on your face,you nod going back to eating.Fili and Kili snickered,you looked up glaring at them wanting to know what was so funny. "did you happen to stay with him last night.?" and with that they burst out laughing again ,now with bofur.  "are you still tight about me not wanting you to get lost in my legs?hm" you had spoke annoyed ,causing bilbo to luagh,gandalf smirking at you.kili and fili stopped laughing,kili just blushed again. "nothing did happen,but I would mostly definitly enjoy having him in my legs." and with that you got up ,crouching down to grab your bag before heading to your to your room.

Only for Thorin to run after you,you were about to walk into your room,only to be smashed into the wall,lips pressed roughly against yours,you knew who it was from his beard ,and his strength. Your legs wrapped tightly around his waist,as his hands cupped your bare bottom gently,before taking you into your room. In the end you did get a proper apology from kili and life was swell.

that was until,HEAT OF THE MOMENT 'rise and shine y/n' joking joking.

Turns out your purpose in middle earth was to save Thorin and his nephews,

Hi, I'd like to take a moment to talk to you all about boom! Shadow :)

I'd also like to preface this by saying I have nothing agaisnt boom and I dont actually understand why people dont like it when it's just a fun series. (Its not even canon cmon)

I'll talk abt the series first, since shadow appears more than once there.

His first episode is, hm, to say the least. Rouge and omega arent canon characters in boom, leaving him with absolutely no friends, and I'm also gonna guess that gun and Maria werent canon either. (This brings up alot of questions on how he came to be but that's for another day.)

His first episode has eggman manipulating footage of sonic "slandering him", he falls for it pretty easily (again, gun worker shadow would never) and goes on a mini rampage to attack sonic and friends.

This is, out of character, to say the least, shadow going so far as to try and not fight tails in sonic x when he was trying to get to Cosmo. He also holds a great respect for Amy, (and I dont think he has a solid opinion on knuckles, it changes from annoyance to tolerance on a whim.)

The fact that sonic is genuinley confused as to why shadow is randomly attacking them is also incredibly telling that a. His character is wrong and b. Shadow is not normally like this, but then again, shadows character has more flip flops than a Florida man.

The second episode he appears in is mostly just him being angry at eggman and wanting to beat up sonic, which, okay, wanting to be better than sonic is (unfortunately) part of his post adventure 2 character arc. It's a pretty entertaining episode if you havent gone into shadows character too much. He also says the next time they fight it will be on his terms, which.. no it wont sadly boom was cancelled.

Honestly though, hes just lonley, it also canon in boom that he lives in a cave alone, (couldnt even give the man a house huh?) So hes bound to be just a lil lonley.

To the games then because that's all we get from our boy in the series.

Rise of lyric is pretty generic when it comes to shadow being in the game, he appears for a boss fight and a cameo at the end, the boss fight is.. interesting, honestly.

Theres a brief cutscene with shadow and eggman, but shadow dosent speak and hes not seen again till the boss fight.

The cutscene before has pretty "normal" shadow dialogue, calling sonic weak because he has friends, which I'm starting to see a pattern here. Sonic also knows who shadow is, and tries to dismiss him pretty quickly.

He does get angry when shadow insults his friends however, which is pretty in character, and they initiate the boss fight with shadow saying hes going to prove how weak sonic is.

(Obviously, you win, your the player.)

The last we see of shadow for the rest of the game is him awkwardly stumbling after being beaten. (they animated his ears to droop too, not relevant, just cute <3)

Hes kicked through the portal and you go about your game. Sonic also does ask what time he was sent too, so he does care, even a little.

He appears again at the end of the game, no explanation as to how he got back, and is immediately ready to fight until he sees the defeated lyric. He then stops and walks away, claiming that sonic and co got the job done.

(We're never explicitly told what side hes on in this game, but hes certainly not working for lyric.)

Shattered crystal is up next, again, pretty generic, but better than the last.

Sonic actually greets him sarcastically in this game, as if he were a friend, and gets confused when shadow (who's being mind controlled) acts strange. He initially is not hostile, but on the assumption that shadow knows where the kidnapped Amy is, he does get briefly angry.

Then a mini boss fight, and shadow wakes up, no longer mind controlled, and acting like a feral cat that's been caged, hes just as confused as sonic and friends are and it probably didnt help that knuckles wanted to knock him out again.

Then when they start trying to question him about Amy, he gets defensive almost instantly, and insults sonic, before remarking that he was talking to lyric before he blacked out. He then tells sticks very firmly that he is not working for lyric and passes the mind control device to tails.

(Again, very calmly passes it, flip flop flip flop)

Once they figure out lyric mind controlled shadow, hes angry, and immediately sets off to find lyric to fight him for using him. Sonic tries to stop him, but theres no stopping shadow when his minds set on something.

We don't see him again for the rest of the game, until he shows up and actually deals the final blow to lyric, he sticks around to listen to sticks get the concept of teamwork wrong, and then leaves, insulting them all again. (Are we seeing a pattern here?)

Sonic then tries to say that they did beat lyric as a team, but shadow is having none of it, and leaves, calling himself Sonics superior. Sonic then says he'd make a great member of team sonic if he werent such a hard case.

Shadow dosent appear in fire and ice, so.

The main theme of boom shadow is pretty much just a massive inferiority complex around sonic, and a whole bunch of insults towards his friends.

Again, shadow has 0 canon friends in boom, and is seemingly annoyed by just about everyone, but it's also not out of the question that he'd end up sucked into the friend group should he ease up on his temper.

For all his talk of being weak for having friends, its my guess that he dosent want to be seen as weak, given how quick he was to fight sonic for such minor (and fake) insults against him. He has no friends and distances himself because he wants to be "strong".

Boom!shadow is certainly not the same as sa2 shadow, and I think if they met, sa2 would be, very embarrassed to say the least.

I could talk about shadows character all day but this has been long enough so uhh, yeah :)

ok wait im doing this in reverse order because EASILY the best first person game is mirror’s edge. u can’t compete with perfection?? i didn’t really like first person games until i played it because i was so used to a third person camera but now i have no issue with them and i actually think that there are a lot of perks to not having to think so hard about camera position the way you do in third person games. i had a really hard time with the camera in the last guardian and that just really made me appreciate mirror’s edge a lot because i NEVER had a hard time with it. it was so fucking intuitive

this is a little long sorry i am going to go into video game history, which i wish i could give a college lecture on, but i can’t, because no one cares. nobody is obligated to read this entire thing u can skip the next 3 paragraphs

anyway i think there is a very specific demographic that guy games are reaching out to that are like, firstly, men (duh), secondly, we are American!, we didn’t grow up playing nintendo games and watching anime and so we think all that weeb stuff is for nerds. in the 90s and early 00s video games werent for just Anybody they were for kids and for nerdy people (usually guy people, girls got sooo excluded it’s like v sad). like back in the 90s and early 00s games were released in america months or even years after they were in japan (and if you were in europe or australia, FORGET IT) and the translations were often kind of shoddy and slapped together, so you wound up missing stuff sometimes or getting something hilarious like “all your base are belong to us” (kudos to one of the internet’s very first memes...you memers out there better respect...video games MADE YOU...). anyway the point being japanese made games are not always appealing/accessible to the average american (who sees and anime and goes...why do they look like that thats weird) 

so that’s where a console like xbox comes from, it’s american-made, it’s the first of its kind, its gonna compete with nintendo (ostensibly for families/kids) and playstation (ostensibly for more grownup games) and americanize/westernize what is essentially a japanese medium at that point to make it accessible to americans/western men (because video games won’t be For Girls until like, very generously, the mid 2000s, and even now it’s a crapshoot), because it’s a huge untapped audience who aren’t experiencing or enjoying this medium, and if people wanna keep making games, games gotta keep making money, you know how it is w/ capitalism

as a side note i think it’s worth noting that before xbox came into the picture, sega was making its own consoles (genesis etc) that were VERY well-received by american audiences...sonic the hedgehog got like a FUCKTON of american-exclusive media such as shows and even a live action movie that came out as recently as THIS YEAR. but they didn’t have as much casual appeal and also had other difficulties, and so once they went under console-wise the market kind of opened up for something New. something with the american-friendly appeal of sonic, and something with the casual appeal of nintendo games, something with the more grownup appeal of playstation. so boom, you have xbox, you have halo, call of duty, etc. suddenly after almost two decades of japan exclusively cornering the home console market, americans can make games! wild!

(skip to here) and so i think that’s what a guy game is: a game made by american men specifically to appeal TO american men, or, at the very least, to not be a threat or turn-off to that demographic. guy games are exemplify american masculinity, and get their roots from what that meant in the early 00s (bearing in mind that as a rule Classic american masculinity is usually sexist/racist/homophobic lol). they have either male protags or female protags that are there to be eye candy. they’re often violent and lighter on the story content (or with a story specifically geared towards men, like halo, which was a huge rousing success) and feature limited women/romance plot lines. they’ve typically got that instant-reward action hack-em-up/shooting gameplay and not very many puzzles, because they’re by design meant to be easy to get into so as not to scare away the new audience they were trying to court 

happily that definition has expanded somewhat and we now have the phenomenon of the little girls from previous guy games (emily kaldwin from dishonored, ellie from tlou) becoming the protags of sequels in their own right. and it’s not like guy games are all bad because i, A Woman, have enjoyed many guy games myself. shooting is satisfying gameplay and sometimes im just not in the Mood for big heavy romance arcs like u find in rpgs. technically mirror’s edge borders on being a guy game but it’s got a TON of well-rounded women in it including a female protag who isn’t just there for sex appeal. games including guy games have more characters of color now (not to point to mirror’s edge twice but LIIIKE it’s one of the best games ever made, so). “””guy games””” made in the 2010s are just more inclusive generally bc american devs figured out women like games and they spend money too, and so gradually the classic “guy game” genre is sort of merging into the more broad thing of just “american games” which is probably a good thing but has also been fascinating to watch in real time. ok lecture over ty everyone for attending

I’ll talk abt the series first, since shadow appears more than once there.

 

His first episode is, hm, to say the least. Rouge and omega arent canon characters in boom, leaving him with absolutely no friends, and I’m also gonna guess that gun and Maria werent canon either. (This brings up alot of questions on how he came to be but that’s for another day.)

 

His first episode has eggman manipulating footage of sonic “slandering him”, he falls for it pretty easily (again, gun worker shadow would never) and goes on a mini rampage to attack sonic and friends.

 

This is, out of character, to say the least, shadow going so far as to try and not fight tails in sonic x when he was trying to get to Cosmo. He also holds a great respect for Amy, (and I dont think he has a solid opinion on knuckles, it changes from annoyance to tolerance on a whim.)

 

The fact that sonic is genuinley confused as to why shadow is randomly attacking them is also incredibly telling that a. His character is wrong and b. Shadow is not normally like this, but then again, shadows character has more flip flops than a Florida man.

 

The second episode he appears in is mostly just him being angry at eggman and wanting to beat up sonic, which, okay, wanting to be better than sonic is (unfortunately) part of his post adventure 2 character arc. It’s a pretty entertaining episode if you havent gone into shadows character too much. He also says the next time they fight it will be on his terms, which.. no it wont sadly boom was cancelled.

 

Honestly though, hes just lonley, it also canon in boom that he lives in a cave alone, (couldnt even give the man a house huh?) So hes bound to be just a lil lonley.

 

To the games then because that’s all we get from our boy in the series.

 

Rise of lyric is pretty generic when it comes to shadow being in the game, he appears for a boss fight and a cameo at the end, the boss fight is.. interesting, honestly.

 

Theres a brief cutscene with shadow and eggman, but shadow dosent speak and hes not seen again till the boss fight.

 

The cutscene before has pretty “normal” shadow dialogue, calling sonic weak because he has friends, which I’m starting to see a pattern here. Sonic also knows who shadow is, and tries to dismiss him pretty quickly.

 

He does get angry when shadow insults his friends however, which is pretty in character, and they initiate the boss fight with shadow saying hes going to prove how weak sonic is.

(Obviously, you win, your the player.)

 

The last we see of shadow for the rest of the game is him awkwardly stumbling after being beaten. (they animated his ears to droop too, not relevant, just cute <3)

 

Hes kicked through the portal and you go about your game. Sonic also does ask what time he was sent too, so he does care, even a little.

 

He appears again at the end of the game, no explanation as to how he got back, and is immediately ready to fight until he sees the defeated lyric. He then stops and walks away, claiming that sonic and co got the job done.

(We’re never explicitly told what side hes on in this game, but hes certainly not working for lyric.)

 

Shattered crystal is up next, again, pretty generic, but better than the last.

 

Sonic actually greets him sarcastically in this game, as if he were a friend, and gets confused when shadow (who’s being mind controlled) acts strange. He initially is not hostile, but on the assumption that shadow knows where the kidnapped Amy is, he does get briefly angry.

 

Then a mini boss fight, and shadow wakes up, no longer mind controlled, and acting like a feral cat that’s been caged, hes just as confused as sonic and friends are and it probably didnt help that knuckles wanted to knock him out again.

 

Then when they start trying to question him about Amy, he gets defensive almost instantly, and insults sonic, before remarking that he was talking to lyric before he blacked out. He then tells sticks very firmly that he is not working for lyric and passes the mind control device to tails.

(Again, very calmly passes it, flip flop flip flop)

Once they figure out lyric mind controlled shadow, hes angry, and immediately sets off to find lyric to fight him for using him. Sonic tries to stop him, but theres no stopping shadow when his minds set on something.

 

We don’t see him again for the rest of the game, until he shows up and actually deals the final blow to lyric, he sticks around to listen to sticks get the concept of teamwork wrong, and then leaves, insulting them all again. (Are we seeing a pattern here?)

 

Sonic then tries to say that they did beat lyric as a team, but shadow is having none of it, and leaves, calling himself Sonics superior. Sonic then says he’d make a great member of team sonic if he werent such a hard case.

 

Shadow dosent appear in fire and ice, so.

 

The main theme of boom shadow is pretty much just a massive inferiority complex around sonic, and a whole bunch of insults towards his friends.

 

Again, shadow has 0 canon friends in boom, and is seemingly annoyed by just about everyone, but it’s also not out of the question that he’d end up sucked into the friend group should he ease up on his temper.

 

For all his talk of being weak for having friends, its my guess that he dosent want to be seen as weak, given how quick he was to fight sonic for such minor (and fake) insults against him. He has no friends and distances himself because he wants to be “strong”.

Boom!shadow is certainly not the same as sa2 shadow, and I think if they met, sa2 would be, very embarrassed to say the least.

 

I could talk about shadows character all day but this has been long enough so uhh, yeah :)

Same lore anon who asked about rol vs shattered crystal. Back with a diff question. In ur experience, do you think that most boom fans are kids? Ofc a large proportion of sonic fans in general are kids, but like, asking about boom specifically bc it's more of a niche, and the humor (AT TIMES) suits a slightly older audience; like I find the show wayyy funnier now (in my 20s) than I did when it first came out (in my early teens). Basically what I'm saying is that when I post stuff, I feel like only children interact. Which isn't horrible ig but like, it sucks when I wanna have a deeper convo about lore or characterizations (I love both btw), u dig? Ofc u dig. Idk it just feels like there are zero active adults in here except you. Thoughts? Or am I not experiencing the norm?

oh man im actually pretty closed off to the sonic fandom (all fandoms, really) and if it werent for this blog id be that silent fan that shares other peoples art but no one would know who i was. and technically i guess that still is the case because i dont advertise my main blog so if you were to see me around you definitely wouldve never heard of me? anyway my point is that im really the last person to know about the age of the average sonic fan (boom or not) on tumblr BUT... from what ive seen i understand what youre talking about because ive noticed a lot of minors in the fandom and even the adults ive seen around are around the 18-21 range and not much older than that. i know for a fact that sonic fans that are closer to my age and even older exist out there, but in my experience many of them are more active on twitter and i dont feel like immediately redirecting anyone to that place because its twitter and twitter sucks. and thats not even going into my opinion of how adult sonic fans choose to engage with this franchise for KIDS because i swear ive seen some weird shit on here coming from them and im just kinda like, guys pls alkdjflk would you act this way with your other interests? rhetorical bc i dont want to know the answer to that

and thats me talking about just the sonic fanbase in general but a lot of this can apply to boom as well since... boom is still sonic lol a good handful of people just dont like it and the ones that do consume other sonic media and thus dont focus solely on it. between this, its lack of priority with sega atm, the less than universal acclaim that it has, and the fact that its just not old enough to really cash in on that nostalgia bait, its no surprise to me that theres a metaphorical tumbleweed blowing through the boom part of the fanbase right now. hell its not like i was aiming to be one of the few active boom fans when i made this blog, i just wanted a place where i could organize my ideas for the continuation i plan on (eventually) writing while i kept the rest of my sonic consumption on my main blog

anyway just because someones a minor doesnt inherently mean they arent capable of engaging in conversations about lore or characters, but nonetheless, i see what you mean - life experiences can have an effect on how we interact with media and if youre anything like me you probably prefer to talk to people closer to your age lol. idk i feel like my answer is all over the place but i hope you got something from it nonetheless!

some insight into the sonic boom tv series and why some certain characters werent used as much as people wouldve liked. previously, i made a post saying that only a handful of characters were approved by sega to exist in the boomverse, but judging from this interview, that wasnt entirely accurate - it was more so that the writers knew that already existing characters in the main canon were so protected that they decided it wouldve been too much of a hassle to get clearance for more than a couple of them (also i just wanna highlight that this confirms that shadow isnt the only one to have mandates unlike what some people in the fanbase seem to believe)

Alan: Oh, man. Writing for Shadow was a challenge in itself. SEGA did not consider him a comedy character. They told us we could use him, he could be on the show, but he was not to be making any jokes. We were like "uh, sure." So to work around that, the joke became the very fact that Shadow is completely humorless. So edgy, all the time. It was funny that he was here, having to deal with all these crazy people.

Greg: Shadow was a character that was very protected by SEGA. They were reluctant to let us use him very much, and when we did use him, he came with so many notes and restrictions that it was easier to not use him. That's why he wasn't on the show as much as fans would have wanted.

MV: So that's why he was relegated to being a once-in-a-blue-moon, 'special episode' character. Was Metal Sonic the same? He doesn't even talk, you could have used him more!

Alan: Yeah, Metal Sonic only put in the one appearance.

Greg: But we brought him back for the finale. Honestly, when characters that were existing, original-universe Sonic characters were brought in, those episodes were just too hard to write for. There were so many notes, they were such protected characters. We got to have so much more freedom with characters of our own, like Dave the Intern and the Mayor, that it was just easier. Did we want to include Big the Cat? Sure we did. But writing that would have been a huge headache, it would have had to have gone through so many layers of clearance. It would have taken ages to get approved. It wasn't worth it. Hence why there's only Shadow, Metal Sonic, and Vector the Crocodile in a handful of episodes.

Alan: Bill's design was that we should be our own island, literally, away from SEGA; to have to get as few approvals from the company as we could. That way, we could play around in the sandbox of original characters, original locations. He told us not to go into lore or backstories, just to keep it all in one place because then we could mess around all we wanted."
