rereading sarah dunant's borgias novel and this part always gets me...i love how juan is always oblivious to cesare's disdain towards him. he's all enthusiastic and sincere, hugging his brother, missing him etc meanwhile cesare's hatred only increases. he despises juan's vulnerability and warmth because their father molded cesare to be a savvy, hardened warrior skilled in the art of deception. it's almost like juan is a mirror reflecting back the parts of humanity cesare has had to kill in himself through his political/warrior education...

#there's something slaps about how juan's brotherly affection and hero worship of cesare is met with such dislike #because basically he represents everything cesare has been taught to despise #the irony all over the scene is so striking when you think of it...#“fearsome warrior” and “smooth cheeked boy” is too crazy like it's how juan might see himself VS what he actually is...a naive youth #which really makes cesare hates him even more #and cesare is like how could someone who's Even struggling with growing a mustache has everything i want !!#i said “parts of humanity cesare has killed in himself” because he doesn't feel even an internal conflict!! it's just pure distaste!!?#he just sees him as a weakling after all #and dangerously naive #sarah dunant #blood and beauty #historical book #historical fiction #the borgias #juan borgia #cesare borgia #literature #tb text post
