I don't know too much about the horrors Shelley Duvall underwent during the making of The Shining, but I've heard just enough to know that it was at the very least unethical. And sure we can marvel at her performance of fear and horror. It was impressive.
But it also manages, to people who are me, to fall flat in its lack of dimension.
People suffering the sort of torment Wendy are under are not only experiencing fear, confusion, and horror. They're also angry and vindictive and vengeful at times.
What if they'd let her fully act the fear so that she could have pulled back and displayed a glimmer of satisfaction when she hit Jack with the bat, a sense of the hilarious/humor as he went head over heels down the stairs? What I wouldn't have given for a sense of rage and fury as she dragged him through the halls of the hotel to lock him in the pantry. A woman dealing with the shit that she's been under would probably have a moment of sadistic satisfaction when he cries out that she may have really hurt him, he's dizzy, and now he wants that doctor she'd mention.
Sure those may be things that at the time might not have gotten written into a script because maybe at that time, women weren't like that(tm). But that's exactly why Duvall should have been left the choice to act with all her wits about her. Actors bring small nuanced moments like that to roles all the time because they are the ones trying to fit their minds into it wholly and completely and without consultation of any of the other characters around them. And they can bring insights into that role that others may not have thought to.
Think Furiosa re her scream in the desert. That was Theron's idea. And when asked where she found that rage—a question that maybe, in a different world, Duvall might have been able to make the space for—she responded that women just have that rage. A good actress will find it and put it where it's needed to go, in places her male coworkers might not think to put that.
Sure I don't think there was any performing better than she did during the bathroom scene, but almost everywhere else, I just got so tired of the constant fear/sadness of the performance, which I believe is exactly what was aimed at by the creators for the film. It was exhausting not in a way that makes me feel Wendy's exhaustion, but made her a caricature that she didn't deserve being.
There's nothing wrong with someone in her situation feeling mostly fear and terror, but it's absurd to think it's just that.
Fuck. Where was the disassociation? We got it maybe for the moment she sliced Jack's hand?
I dunno. I'm sure many people have spoken on this much better than me before and probably having seen it more than one (1) single time and have better, more sophisticated thoughts. It was a good movie. I don't recall anyone putting Jack through shit to get his performance and he did a great job, with lots of various emotions throughout. Let actors do their job.
#la de da#I didn't really know what to expect going in#and I accept that some of these thoughts come from already knowing about what they did to get Duvall's performance#So maybe I wouldn't have thought the same if I had watched it without knowing#though honestly I think knowing actually gave me a lot more patience for the portrayal of Wendy that if I hadn't known#I can appreciate now in a way I once couldn't the different forms of strenght women got to show at various points in time#and can appreciate that Wendy is a strong af character#but it would be hard to see it through all that if I hadn't gone into it knowing that the actress couldn't even act properly#annnnyway dont' mind my rambles#furi watches#the shining (1980)

Fairy Tail season 3 review!!
What a journey! I didn't expect to enjoy this series as much as I did, but I had a lot of fun watching it! And idgaf about the haters cause everyone always has something to say. That aside, I liked this season a lot, although things could've been better executed imo.
I felt bad for Lucy when Natsu and Happy left cause everyone else in the guild had someone when they disbanded but she was by herself but I'm glad she was able to be a writer and be more independent!! The Avatar arc was alright, they had me in the first half thinking that Gray was evil.
The Alvarez Empire arc as a whole was wild. People may hate this about FT but I on the other hand am glad that there were few deaths. Why would I want my favorites to die LOL I have AOT and KNY for that. I really appreciated the screen time the other guilds got this time around too. I wish they utilized certain characters more like the Lucy's celestial spirits but it seems they were rushed or had less episodes this time around. When they dropped that the Dragon Slayers were from 400 years in the past, my mind was blown. Things from previous seasons made sense bc of that. When Makarov used Fairy Law, I didn't cry until they showed the flashback of Mavis naming him and when they showed Erza's flashback with him. They really had me crying for everyone this season omg. I was so relieved when they defeated Aconologia too - he literally became what he hated.
Mavis and Zeref deserved better!! When they showed them holding hands in heaven, the pain. And don't get me started on August. If you told me, I was gonna cry that much for him, I would've laughed. The moment he saw Mavis and stopped his spell, that hurt so bad. All he wanted was his parent’s love and he still never got it. And it’s the fact that Mavis and Zeref never knew he was their child!! I really really wanted them to know ugh. Mavis and Zeref are right person, wrong time. But the last episode, they had a reincarnation moment???
I'll do this as simple and with as many characters as I can. Ya'll know I love Lucy, she's not the strongest physically but her growth is immaculate! What I love about her is that she is very compassionate! Natsu, Gray, and Erza are amazing I love them, their bond can never be broken. Wendy also grew on me a lot too, she's so cute. Gajeel has to be my favorite tbh as well as Laxus, they're development from when we first met them is soo good. Ever, Fried, Bislow are also characters I enjoyed and wish had more screen time tbh. I loved the Strauss siblings as well, especially Mirajane and Elfman cause of their development. I also grew to like the other FT side characters like Warren, Lyon, Jellal, Bisca, Alzack, etc. I wish we got to see more Gildarts as well, he’s cool and strong af!!! I love his father daughter relationship with Cana. Happy, Lily and Carla are so funny and such gems lol.
Ok for the ships, Gajeel and Levy are cute af, and probably the most progressed ship out of the main. Their moments this season gave me so much serotonin. Speaking of which, baby??? If so, we love to see it. Referring to the last episode.
I feel so dumb thinking we'd get some NaLu confession or something, even Jellal and Erza! Gray and Juvia are ok to me, still not 100% sure how I feel about them cause sometimes I lowkey ship Gray and Lucy but I love their friendship at the same time lmao why am I like this.
I loved the overall theme of the show - friendship/family, I think that's what has me so attached. I can't wait for the 100 Years arc to be animated!!! Idk when that'll be but hopefully soon!!
Ok here are a couple bonus screen caps (I have too many I wish I could share)

Call me out if I’m reaching harder than Mr. Fantastic, but something I love about Strordo is how it turns tropes/clichés/stereotypes about interracial relationships on their head and makes them… not suck ass?
Karl isn’t Stephen’s Marvel Mandatory Black Best Friend™ unless you want to grasp at straws and be pedantic, he isn’t the mentor that dies to further Stephen’s character arc, he isn’t the irredeemable villain. Karl Mordo is strong yet gentle, and his incomparable capacity for goodness and for seeing in Stephen what no one else saw (TAO doesn't count, she was looking at the future lmao) are literally the first thing the movie show us. Gentleness, bravery, badassery, a strong sense of justice, and empathy are literally Karl’s main character traits.
Going back to his relationship with Stephen, Stephen is the exotic foreigner, not Karl. He’s the one who has to shut the fuck up and learn from a) a non-binary gaycoded AF woman, b) a gaycoded as fuck Black man, c) and the bisexual hunk biscuit known as Wong. I can go on and on about this shit because I wasn’t expecting it.
I’m cynical and I don’t think this was thanks to the director, the producers, or the writers. I’m pretty sure this refreshing take on characters of color and the random but welcome gaycoding comes from the actors. Like, forreal. Shut me up. I can talk for hours about how no one is paying attention to the DS supporting cast (or Stephen himself, lbr) and there’s some rich storytelling choices made there like damn.
Simp for Karl Amadeus Mordo. SIMP FOR HIM. Stan Strordo like damn, it’s the kind of interracial ship I’ve been waiting for all my life, where the white character literally dies every time the Black character smiles at his dumb jokes and the white character would straight up die for the Black character if it came to that.
After watching W*ndavision make Monica Rambeau Wendy’s Black Best Friend and diminish her further after I thought it’d be impossible to do so (I mean, Captain Marvel made her the kid sidekick to Carol even though it should’ve been the other way around). I don’t trust Marvel with this shit, which is why I appreciate the gift that is Strordo and Karl and Wong.

Oh my goodness Nonny 🥺😭 This post is absolutely beautiful. Also, I’m terribly sorry it took me ages to respond. Work’s been eating away at me and I wanted time to respond to this magnificent post properly.
I’m so excited whenever I see metas/essays about strordo. Or even when someone shares their excited love for these two characters. It just brings me immense and immeasurable joy ^^ Like when I first got into this ship I was shocked by the lack of love for it. Thought I was crazy seeing something no one else did. But I was happy to discover that a handful of precious souls also stanned them. It was like finding gems to be honest. Each fic, fanart, post, all of it little treasures to me.
I just adore everything you stated dearest Nonny. Especially about Karl. He has such a compassionate and loving nature, and it makes it more heartbreaking to see his faith in his loved ones shatter. Like give him a break already, his heart’s been shredded 😭 I just want him happy dearest Nonny. Oh, and I want Stephen to pursue him. I Stephen to forever try and amend what they lost. I want Stephen to hold on to hope that Karl will return. I want Karl to struggle with that and realize he’s loved. For real. I mean our poor baron has gone through so much betrayal. Just let him realize he’s loved, damnit Marvel give him relief 🥺😭
Also I think people who cast Karl was the cackling, deranged, abusive evil ex either never watched DS or they just blatantly ignored what was presented to them. It’s....really telling. And it’s just disheartening to think people would ignore Karl’s beautiful character just to smash him into the role of villain for the white characters to defeat. Like he’s gotta be defeated for Stephen to end up happily with a white guy. It’s probably not their intention to come across as racist but....that’s the impact it has for me. More so the fact that Karl gets stripped of all his wonderful traits.
Like making him a rival, I can get. But to remove the compassion and gentleness....like hold up now. Karl’s one of the most compassionate characters in the MCU. That man has mother hen/mama bear written all over him. He’s incredibly kind. Tough yes, and he was willing to easily kill. But it came from a place of protecting and preserving what he loved, his home and his found family. And in the end he gets betrayed and he ends up hurt and alone. 😭 And even with him taking magic away from others...I’m not gonna excuse that. That was brutal. But in his mind that was a way of amending what he thinks were mistakes he made.
My headcanon is he’s taking magic back from people he’s personally recruited, as a way of atonement. What this means for his eventual reunion with Stephen? Oh sweet Nonny, I can’t wait to find out

Rules: Name your top 10 favorite characters from 10 different fandoms, and then tag 10 people.
and since I sincerely dislike picking my favorite anything we’re doing this! (+ gonna go with smaller - at least I think they’re smaller?? - or less obvious fandoms cause reasons o.o) + in random order
from Defiance: Stahma Tarr
I mean, can you really blame me? :D brains&beauty is a big yes from me, even though I was sometimes annoyed by all the unnecessary scheming - cause I mean, it was too much sometimes lol. But I liked her especially with Kenya, that was a sweet storyline I wish they didn’t kill so fast ‘cause it brought something else we haven’t seen in this character before. In any case, she was great!
from A Series of Unfortunate Events: Esmé Squalor
She was seriously a highlight of this series for me - cause, honestly, I wasn’t sure I was gonna make it through it till the end of this lol. She is hot and evil and crazy, and honestly, they should have made her gay with that librarian - ya know which one I mean - but maybe that’s just me. Also, great costumes!
from Political Animals: Elaine Barrish
I mean, I assume I liked this series so much because of Sigourney (also Carla Gugino cause YES) but damn it was a fun show. I was hoping for more seasons tbh, but oh well. Elaine tho, such a great character: strong, bamf, cute af, didn’t take shit from men. She was fun!
from Lost Girl: Tamsin
Let’s face it, this show was a little bit(ekhem) of a disaster but they did have some nice characters! And even tho I loved Bo&Laurentogether and I liked Kenzi a lot I have to admit that Tamsin was more my kind of gal (apart from some ooc things they made her do). I was kinda annoyed with them for what they did to her character in the end but ya know, I didn’t really expect anything much lol.
from Mindhunter: Wendy Carr
I mean, have you seen Anna Torv in this haircut and in a suit?! She is so so hot. This is all I didn’t know I wanted while watching her on Fringe tbh (btw, to anyone who watched fringe: is she doing something different with her voice here cause I didn’t notice her voice being this in that show???). Also, gimme a hardass lesbian any day ❤
from Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: Prudence Blackwood
As much as I love Zelda and Hilda (and Lilith) I gotta say, Prudence was the first to steal my heart. She’s a scheming badass with a lot of issues but you just have to appreciate her crazy ass am I right or what? Also, did I mention she’s hot af? Cause she is.
from Dark Matter: Nyx Harper
We didn’t get nearly enough of her before this show was cancelled okay, and especially her&Two cause those two... Also, she’s hot and can work a gun and can punch man like a pro. I mean, do you see my point ?
from Mr. Robot: Dominique DiPierro
Honestly, when I first saw her in the show, I was like “fingers crossed she’s gay” and when she was I was so happy cause fuck yeah finally! Also, she’s a bamf and cute af :)
from Punisher: Dinah Madani
I mean, just look at this babe!!! Great character, hot af, a bamf I mean, how could she not be my fave I mean ? She deserves all the best and fuck this Ben dude. They should have made her gay also okay, just saying.
from Lost in Space: Judy Robinson
Judy is just too cute okay and she tries so hard and has the oldest sister syndrome. I’m kinda annoyed at her family for putting so much pressure on her and for her just taking that on but if that’s the syndrome in all(most) it’s glory right there (not to mention all the other children-adults problems PLUS she’s nineteen!!! I mean, seriously, it that only bothering me or ?). But she’s still too precious. What I’d want for her for the next season is to get some side story not directly involving the family okay, cause I feel like everyone got some and she didn’t (I’m not counting her being a genius doctor here). Also, pls give her a hardass girlfriend pls! That would be so fun to watch!
So there we are, ten badass ladies cause it seems like men are not appearing much in my favorites lol (I should maybe do one with dudes only lol, for science)
Tagging first 10 mutuals on my activity page for mixing shit up reasons (ofc ignore if annoyed but I’m tagging people as usual ‘cause I think it’s nice:)): @ohmystarsy, @sorrydearie, @marsza, @colorfulmetaphors, @pangalactics, @seydoux-me, @gay-mo, @dragonlordette, @bi-petal & @villaenelle
#meme thingy#never sure how I'm tagging this stuff#<- I guess this should be my tag for it then lol#anyways#stuff under the cut to not be annoying
