Leadership and Team Management
In today's fast-paced and ever-changing business environment, effective leadership and team management are crucial for organizational success. Leaders who can inspire, guide, and manage their teams effectively can drive innovation, improve performance, and foster a positive work culture. This article explores critical aspects of leadership and team management, providing insights into how leaders can cultivate high-performing teams.
The Role of a Leader
Leadership goes beyond just holding a position of authority. It involves influencing and inspiring others to achieve common goals. A leader sets the vision, communicates it clearly, and motivates the team to work towards it. Influential leaders possess qualities such as integrity, empathy, resilience, and the ability to make decisions under pressure. They are also good listeners, understanding the needs and concerns of their team members.
Vision and Communication
A leader must have a clear vision for the future of the organization. This vision acts as a roadmap, guiding the team's efforts and providing direction. However, more than having a vision is required; a leader must also be able to communicate it effectively. Clear and consistent communication helps ensure that everyone understands the goals and their role in achieving them. Leaders should encourage open dialogue, provide regular updates, and be transparent about challenges and progress.
Leading by Example
Leaders set the tone for the organization through their actions. Leading by example means demonstrating the behaviors and attitudes that are expected from the team. When leaders show commitment, hard work, and a positive attitude, it inspires the team to follow suit. This builds trust and respect, which are essential for a cohesive and motivated team.
Building and Managing a Team
Creating a high-performing team requires careful selection, development, and management of team members. It involves understanding each individual's strengths and weaknesses, fostering collaboration, and providing the necessary support for growth.
Recruitment and Onboarding
The foundation of a great team starts with hiring the right people. During the recruitment process, leaders should look for candidates who not only possess the required skills but also align with the organization's values and culture. Once hired, a comprehensive onboarding process helps new employees integrate into the team and understand their responsibilities. Effective onboarding includes training, mentoring, and providing resources to help new hires succeed.
Fostering Collaboration
A successful team is one where members work together towards common goals. Leaders should create an environment that encourages collaboration, open communication, and mutual respect. This can be achieved by organizing team-building activities, encouraging cross-functional projects, and recognizing collaborative efforts. When team members feel valued and supported, they are more likely to contribute their best efforts.
Continuous Development
Investing in the continuous development of team members is crucial for long-term success. Leaders should provide opportunities for learning and growth, such as training programs, workshops, and mentorship. Regular feedback and performance reviews help employees understand their strengths and areas for improvement. By supporting professional development, leaders not only enhance the skills of their team but also increase job satisfaction and retention.
Managing Conflicts and Challenges
No team is immune to conflicts and challenges. Influential leaders are adept at managing these situations to maintain team harmony and productivity.
Conflict Resolution
Conflicts are inevitable in any team, but how they are managed can make a significant difference. Leaders should address conflicts promptly and fairly, ensuring that all parties are heard and understood. Mediation techniques, such as active listening and finding common ground, can help resolve disputes amicably. It is essential to create an environment where conflicts are seen as opportunities for growth and improvement rather than threats.
Handling Challenges
Challenges, whether internal or external, test the resilience of a team. Leaders must be proactive in identifying potential challenges and developing strategies to address them. This involves being adaptable, maintaining a positive outlook, and encouraging the team to find innovative solutions. By fostering a culture of problem-solving and resilience, leaders can help their teams navigate through difficult times and emerge stronger.
Recognition and Reward
Acknowledging the hard work and achievements of team members is vital for maintaining motivation and morale. Leaders should implement a system of recognition and rewards that aligns with the team's values and goals.
Celebrating Success
Celebrating successes, both big and small, helps build a sense of accomplishment and camaraderie within the team. Leaders can organize recognition events, provide bonuses or incentives, and offer public praise for outstanding performance. Regularly celebrating achievements reinforces the importance of each team member's contributions and encourages a positive work environment.
Personalized Rewards
Understanding what motivates each team member allows leaders to provide personalized rewards. Some employees may value public recognition, while others may prefer private acknowledgment or opportunities for career advancement. By tailoring rewards to individual preferences, leaders can ensure that their efforts to motivate the team are practical.
Effective leadership and team management are critical components of organizational success. By setting a clear vision, fostering collaboration, managing conflicts, and recognizing achievements, leaders can build and maintain high-performing teams. The ability to inspire and guide a team towards common goals not only drives business success but also creates a positive and fulfilling work environment for all members.

Celebrating Successes and Learning from Failures: Nurturing Effective Teamwork
In the ever-evolving landscape of the modern workplace, effective teamwork stands as a cornerstone for achieving exceptional results. It's a journey where the path to success is illuminated not only by accomplishments but also by the lessons drawn from failures.
Tumblr media
As organizations strive to foster collaborative environments, understanding how to celebrate achievements and embrace setbacks is vital. In this comprehensive guide, we delve into strategies for building effective teamwork, share inspiring team success stories, and explore the significance of celebrating success in the workplace.
Effective Teamwork Strategies: The Foundation of Success
At the heart of every high-performing team lies a strong framework of effective teamwork strategies. These strategies go beyond the usual project management techniques and delve into the realm of collaboration, communication, and mutual support.
Clear Communication: Ensuring Alignment and Understanding
Transparent communication channels are crucial for any team's success. Regular updates, feedback loops, and open discussions foster an environment where team members are informed and aligned with each other's goals. Effective communication not only prevents misunderstandings but also enhances clarity on project objectives, timelines, and potential challenges. It encourages active listening and ensures that everyone's voice is heard, creating a sense of shared ownership.
Roles and Responsibilities: Leveraging Individual Strengths
A crucial aspect of effective teamwork is assigning roles and responsibilities based on individual strengths. When team members are assigned tasks that align with their skills and expertise, they can contribute more effectively and efficiently. A well-defined structure eliminates confusion about who is responsible for what, reducing the risk of duplicate efforts or tasks falling through the cracks. This approach empowers individuals to take ownership of their tasks and collaborate seamlessly.
Collaborative Decision-Making: Harnessing Collective Wisdom
Encouraging collaborative decision-making allows teams to tap into diverse perspectives. When decisions are made collectively, it enhances buy-in and generates innovative solutions. This approach ensures that decisions aren't dominated by a single viewpoint but are shaped by the collective wisdom of the team. By involving team members in decision-making processes, you foster a sense of ownership and commitment to the chosen course of action.
Lifelong Learning: Flourishing in Changing Circumstances
Teams that prioritize learning and skill development thrive in dynamic environments. Regular training sessions, workshops, and knowledge sharing foster growth-oriented mindsets. By staying updated on industry trends, new technologies, and evolving best practices, team members can contribute valuable insights and adapt to changes more effectively. A culture of continuous learning also encourages experimentation and the pursuit of innovative solutions.
Building Trust: The Cornerstone of Effective Teamwork
Trust forms the bedrock of effective teamwork. Team members must have confidence in each other's abilities and intentions. Trust enables open dialogue and the freedom to express ideas without fear of judgment. Building trust requires consistent actions that demonstrate reliability, accountability, and a commitment to the team's success. When individuals trust their colleagues, they are more likely to collaborate, share ideas, and provide constructive feedback.
Effective teamwork strategies lay the groundwork for achieving exceptional results and fostering a positive work environment. By prioritizing clear communication, leveraging individual strengths, embracing collaborative decision-making, promoting continuous learning, and building trust, teams can navigate challenges, drive innovation, and achieve their goals. These strategies not only enhance productivity but also create a sense of unity and purpose, ensuring that each team member's contribution is valued and impactful.
Team Success Stories: Inspiring Paths to Achievement
Every team's journey is studded with moments of triumph that stem from dedication, perseverance, and the application of effective teamwork strategies. Let's delve into a few remarkable team success stories that exemplify the power of collaboration and innovation:
SpaceX: Revolutionizing Space Travel: SpaceX, under the leadership of Elon Musk, has redefined space travel through groundbreaking innovations. Their successful launches and recoveries of reusable rockets are the result of seamless coordination among engineers, scientists, and technicians. This achievement showcases how effective teamwork can turn audacious visions into reality.
Google's Project Aristotle: Google's Project Aristotle conducted extensive research to uncover the secrets of effective teams. The study revealed that psychological safety, where team members feel comfortable taking risks and being vulnerable, is a key factor in driving team success. This emphasis on psychological safety has contributed to Google's ability to innovate and thrive.
Success Celebration in the Workplace: More Than Just Recognition
Recognizing accomplishments goes beyond acknowledging achievements; it's about fostering a culture of appreciation and motivation. Success celebration in the workplace is not only a morale booster but also a catalyst for sustained performance.
Tumblr media
Boosting Morale: Celebrating Success
When successes are celebrated, a wave of positivity sweeps through the workplace, uplifting team spirits and energizing the entire environment. This simple act reinforces the idea that hard work and dedication are recognized and valued, cultivating a sense of pride in one's contribution to the organization. Employees feel a stronger connection to their work and the company, leading to increased job satisfaction and a more committed workforce.
Motivating Performance: Fuelling the Drive for Excellence
The impact of celebrating successes extends beyond the immediate moment. When team members witness their efforts being genuinely appreciated and applauded, it serves as a powerful motivator. Recognizing achievements showcases that individual and collective contributions have a direct impact on the organization's success. This understanding motivates employees to continue striving for excellence as they see their hard work translate into tangible outcomes.
Cultivating Camaraderie: Strengthening Team Dynamics
Beyond individual recognition, success celebrations bring team members together in a shared moment of accomplishment. Celebration events create opportunities for colleagues to bond outside of their daily tasks, fostering a stronger sense of camaraderie. These interactions build rapport and trust among team members, which directly contributes to improved collaboration and teamwork. As relationships strengthen, communication becomes smoother and more effective, resulting in a harmonious work environment.
Inspiring Innovation: Nurturing Growth Through Insights
Success celebrations are not just about revelling in achievements; they also provide a platform for sharing valuable insights gained during successful projects. As team members reflect on their accomplishments, they can pinpoint strategies, tactics, and approaches that led to the positive outcome. These insights serve as a wellspring of knowledge, potentially sparking innovative ideas that can shape the trajectory of future projects. By learning from successes, organizations can continuously evolve and adapt to stay competitive in a rapidly changing landscape.
As organizations embrace the practice of celebrating successes, they create a culture that values dedication, teamwork, and growth. Beyond the immediate impact on morale and motivation, these celebrations foster an environment where excellence is the norm and innovation are nurtured. So, let's acknowledge accomplishments not just for their face value but for the profound positive impact they can have on individuals, teams, and the entire workplace.
Conclusion
In a world where collaboration is at the forefront of success, embracing effective teamwork strategies, sharing inspiring team success stories, and fostering a culture of success celebration are indispensable. As teams harness the power of collaboration, they lay the groundwork for a brighter future where shared achievements and lessons from failures shape progress.

Why Psychological Safety Matters in a Virtual Workplace
The growing trend towards the adoption of hybrid organization structures is being reinforced through multiple surveys and reports. What is important to note is that the nature of interactions has shifted from a physical to a virtual environment leading to missing out on few critical signals that we get from our peers and colleagues. They are in the form of serendipitous interactions, unscheduled catchups and connections, and interactions that are informal, and casual. While the physical work environment naturally provided these, it’s becoming complex in the virtual and remote work environment. Now, you may ask, “Why is this required?”.
Social exchange is the micro-foundation of building trust and such social exchanges accelerate this process. Working relationships built on trust are a strong predictor of collaboration within a team resulting in smooth communication between team members. This environment of collaboration is fostered by high trust and high-quality relationships. This is where Psychological Safety enters our conversation. In this blog, we discuss the need for Psychological Safety in the workplace.
Psychological safety in a virtual world
A psychologically safe environment is a result of high-quality relationships leading to healthy group dynamics and organizational support. In a two-year-long study, Google’s Project Aristotle discovered Psychological Safety as one of the five key dimensions of high-performing teams. This is also reinforced by many other empirical studies by Harvard and MIT. As human beings, we have a fundamental need to relate and socialize with each other. This need if not fulfilled leads to anxiety, fear of missing out, feeling of loneliness, and becoming disconnected from the team and larger organization.
In a physical work setup, the work structure was designed to allow people to build these bonds, connect, and socialize with peers. With virtual work taking over, the opportunity to connect and in turn “satisfy” this need for relatedness is lost. Working virtually makes it difficult for people to pick up cues about an individual’s intention, body language, or mental state, making the trust-building process slower. The level of relatedness affects our intrinsic motivation at work.  As we move along with the newer ways of working, this need must be systemically addressed. This fundamental need for relatedness is taken care of by creating a psychologically safe environment.
Psychological Safety: Collective perception
Psychological Safety is a collective belief of a team that it is safe to take interpersonal risks and be vulnerable to one another. Psychological Safety facilitates the willing contribution of ideas and actions to a shared enterprise.
Let’s take two scenarios where Ella is a new employee who has joined the organization during the pandemic. She has never met anyone from her colleagues and has been working virtually ever since she joined. However, she’s been a part of regular team meetings with the management and other teams as well.
What Ella experiences while working virtually?
Regular scenario: In the team meetings, Ella feels has queries that can help her provide clarity around the topics discussed. Sometimes she also has different opinions regarding the approach being taken by the team. Since she hasn’t met anyone from the team and is only exposed to work-related interactions, she hasn’t established the “connect” with her team members which makes her unsure of how her opinions will be perceived. She, therefore, feels reluctant to take the interpersonal risk. While she feels confident about her opinions, she often drops the idea of expressing these opinions as she is afraid of being wrong or looking “unsmart” in front of the team. Hence, she usually just agrees with what the team or the management agrees.
Psychologically safe scenario: In the team meetings, Ella is always actively participating. Through brief informal interactions at the beginning or end of meetings, she has been able to build a connection with her team members. Hence, she makes sure to ask the smallest of doubts that she might have. She often expresses her views while being aware that they might bring conflict of statements. She is not afraid of being wrong or being looked down upon for asking or making statements. Sometimes, her approach also helps the team to look at the problem from a different direction adding value to the solutions.
In both the scenarios, the meetings are only conducted at scheduled timings and Ella only interacts with her peers or manager while these meetings. The difference that stands in both situations is the presence of psychological safety in Scenario 2. Experiencing Psychological Safety allows an individual to take risks and be in the spotlight without worrying about being right or wrong. Building a psychologically safe environment means allowing an individual to fail and make mistakes without the fear of consequences. The environment is nurtured by the team (especially the Manager) in a way that all team members can easily communicate their beliefs, thoughts, admit to their errors and ask for help whenever required. Psychological safety enables teams to learn while making people feel secure and capable of changing their behavior in response to shifting organizational challenges.
What does it mean for organizations?
Creating a psychologically safe workplace can impact organizations in many ways, three of which are listed below:
Learning behavior: The ability to give and receive feedback enables employees to indulge in learning from peers and managers. Constant evaluation of their work allows them to identify their development points and establish a learning behavior. Having a learning behavior allows employees to continuously upskill and thrive with the constantly changing market requirements.
Reflection and Resilience: Thriving in a psychologically safe environment involves acceptance of failures and more essentially, reflecting upon these failures. The collective reflection at a team level defines the members’ ability to bounce back and improvise to succeed in their tasks, positively contributing towards higher productivity and overall performance.
Innovation and creativity: The environment to create and innovate is fostered by taking risks and communicating strong interpersonal trust in team members. Risk-taking allows employees to expand their horizons and seek to find newer interesting techniques to find solutions to problems. In our last blog, we highlighted how creativity allows the development and implementation of new ideas helping organizations to move towards agile organizational structures.
Psychological safety enabling the future of work
As the business landscape changes, the focus on minimal governance and maximum execution require people to take risks and decisions independently. A psychologically safe workplace exposes people to high-quality decision-making along with continuous innovation and collaboration. Research suggests that psychological safety is a strong predictor of team effectiveness and an organization’s sustained competitive advantage is an outcome of its people’s success along with team effectiveness.
At Kognoz, we are solving the problem of creating a psychologically safe environment in a virtual workplace. Our research is focused on scientifically diagnosing the team and organizational environment and creating conditions where all employees can operate in a psychologically safe environment resulting in higher team performance, innovation, and creativity. Leadership Development (Final Reflection)
Effective leadership is critical to the ongoing success of teams and organisation. The leadership development course provided me with the knowledge, skill and self-awareness to act as an effective leader and contribute to the leadership and on-going improvement process of the leadership qualities and change in the team and at workplace. It helped me to identify the leadership opportunities and challenges faced by the organisation using relevant management and leadership theories. Taught me how to formulate the leadership development plan through enhanced self-awareness of my core strengths, values, cognitive style and conflict management styles. How to apply appropriate motivation, leadership theories and engagement techniques to bring the best out of followers. How to  select the appropriate leadership and followership style using various analytical tools and techniques like problem-solving,Team MoU template, behavioral and contingency approach, using levels of team development stage in a variety of situation. The course also gave me an insight of how to use the appropriate communication strategies to support the leadership initiatives and establish a climate that fosters creativity, innovation, change and builds teamwork.
Tumblr media
Being an active sports person during my schooldays and strong upbringing by my parents with moral values and traits help build the qualities of a leader in me. Everyone during their young age would have had a leader in their minds as their inspiration as a follower and aspired to be a Leader of that sort someday. As a kid, even I used to follow the principles of many leaders like Swami Vivekananda, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Warren Buffet etc., and always aspired to be famous like them one day. As I started following them a lot of question used to linger in my mind as to how are these leaders born? Are they born leaders, or do they become leaders over the passage of time? What qualities should one poses to become a successful leader? Why is that only a few are in the limelight while others aren’t? I used to wonder as to what urged them to become a leader and create a legacy that even now people across globe and by generations are yet following them?
With the advent of technology, all thanks to the internet, my learnings from the books I read, my mentors who help me build the leadership skills and traits within me and who taught me what leadership is all about and why is it important to poses these qualities as a leader , the societal norms that people had created and my friends who’s stories have always been and will be my inspiration and the people who I meet across my expedition on life had helped me to find answers to these questions. They have been a great source of influence and motivation in my life.
With all the knowledge I had gained over the years, I was able to understand what truly defines to be a leader. According to me, Leadership is that one great interpersonal quality that every individual pose from within. It is a very fine line that distinguishes between how to be and not how to do. To make that choice lies in the hands of leader and that is why renowned leaders have left a strong mark in hearts of the people for a lifetime and are still a living inspiration for millions of younger and future generations. of a democratic leader that eventually lead my team to win many events. When I was an NCC leader, During my schooldays, when I was given a chance to be a leader I tried to implement all the qualities I was able to build trust among my team , efficiently delegated the work, listen to their issues, resolve the conflicts and these core leadership skills had helped me to perceive the goals to the fullest. From my experience, I learnt that a person is said to be a good leader if he/she can win peoples heart and bring changes to their lives by being fearless.
Taking up the leadership development course again on my new expedition of life has enthralled and influenced me to learn more and develop the traits for being a successful leader ahead. Coming to Sheridan College, working with such great people from different cultures who are unique in their own way has helped me develop as a person and recognize my new strengths as a leader. Thank you, Prof., Carol for being kind enough to provide me the opportunity to explore my capabilities of being a leader. Getting to know you in person has made me realise that life is still a learning and we have the right to live it our way. Being a leader and earning money alone is not important how you take that learning and use them diligently to make a difference in people’s life is very important.
Starting the course with five step leadership templates gave me an outlook of how and what the entire learnings about leadership and the desired result of it would be. Analysing and assessing one’s style of leadership is the foremost challenging step for an individual. The MBIT and Gallup’s Strength Finder test taken during the second week resonated me to closely find out my core five strengths (Achiever, Developer, Input, Responsibility and Learner) that I pose as a leader. The tool created a self-awareness of what my strengths are without giving much negative feedback and gave me an insight of how to put them into action while working in a team. To be an Authentic leader, it also helped me know my core values and  cognitive style of thinking (INTJ) .Sharing this with my teammates had helped me build my confidence and lead to a positive and productive environment. Moreover, in future it will help me to align my job and goals with my natural talent. Knowing each other key strengths helped us as a team to be focus on delivering best results and create a positive and productive environment.
Resolving the conflicts efficiently was always my weakness and learning the model of conflict resolution gave me the guidance of how to identify and approach them. The lesson that learnt from the model is that, being assertive and accommodating the needs of others over one’s own needs will help to better resolve the conflict and bring harmony among the members in the team. In future, I would try to implement behaviour roles while working with my team because adopting these roles would help us to excel and achieve the goals in the longer run.
Furthermore, from the third weeks module one of the key element that I got to learn was building trust. I personally got to experience how building trust among the members can lead to a high-performance team. Being the Leader- facilitator, for me, the major success factor was that everyone was committed to the goal and purpose of the project and had strong team cohesiveness which helped us to deliver the best result. I am happy that within a short span of time I got a chance to build the teams trust on me. Their continuous motivation and trust on me gave me the strength to deliver my first presentation well, without letting down my team. That moment made me realize the true value of trust and what difference it can make in a person’s life. Assessing our Team MoU brought us together to rectify and solve our issues coherently and gave an insight of how to improve as team to reach the goal.
Tumblr media
Leaders are said to be able to influence people in working towards accomplishing a common goal.. Team development is the key area of leadership that I can naturally relate myself to. To be a more effective leader, I would use my developer and responsibility strengths to encourage my team members in this area which would lead to high performance. My near obsession of doing things right, in future, would help subordinates to live up their commitments and their success would eventually lead to their growth as a leader. As a leader, I played a socioemotional role that largely contributed to my teams’ development and it might also be one of the roles which I would like to change in future. Moreover, this role might not be effective on the longer run and when I look back on this team now, the one thing that I would like to change would be some dysfunctions which includes avoidance of accountability and inattention to results which lead to some conflicts in the end.
Problem- solving and decision making are the important skills for business and life. We as a team got to learn to utilise the template to resolve the conflicts occurring among the team members or to solve a problem in the organisation. The advantages of using this template  is that it gives  a clear view to identify and solve the issue immediately. It will help them to analyse and assess the core issue and construct plans achieve the original goal.  . The most challenging part of this template is implementing the planed action and to provide the right solution to solve the issue without much negotiations. Further the beneficial part was to identify the key strengths and root cause of the conflict. The breakdown of problem solving process from solution analyses to implementation of the plan makes it easy and effective for the leaders to lead teams and accomplish the task. From the give problem solving template the most critical leadership requirement for a leader is effective communication and the ability to shape the culture and values to compete, grow and achieve the goal of the organisation.
Tumblr media
From the following classes I also learnt that along with the quality of building trust and resolving conflict a leader must also be an effective communicator and listener. The leader who has the quality to show his gratitude and empathy towards others with high emotional intelligence is said to a successful leader. It is important for a leader to choose the right channel to communicate their vision to the team members and lead them to be followers. Along with that a leader most also know how to motivate their employees by providing the intrinsic and extrinsic rewards and work towards fostering creativity, change and teamwork. Overall this course has broadened my vision on leadership and help develop a new leader in me.

6 Unconventional Ways to Build a Strong Team at Your Startup
What is a strong team? A team that is driven, where every member plays an equal role, one that shares a strong bond with each other, one in which everyone is learning, growing, and satisfied.
If you search Google for tips to run a successful startup, one of the first things to pop-up among those tips is to build a strong team. From LinkedIn’s CEO to famous VCs like Naval Ravikant, all say, ‘It’s the people, stupid!’

Good collaboration ensues when the team members are in sync with each other. Strong teams are especially important for startups given the dips and peaks it goes through, especially in the initial phases.
Here are a few tips to build such strong teams:
Source
1. Encourage office pranks (not harmful ones of course)
A strong team is where the team members share a strong bond with each other. Though they may seem silly, office pranks are one of the best ways to achieve that.
Pranks encourage creative thinking and healthy camaraderie between the team members. It is a great way to break the ice and also get to know people on a personal level.
With their touch of humor, they can help build a creative and vibrant office culture. A fun work environment is often results in your employees looking forward to their work day, instead of dragging their feet. IDEO is one company that encourages pranks in their offices. Of course, there is always a line to draw when it comes to practical jokes.
2. Help your team have a life outside work
At my startup Hiver, we hire tutors to teach new skills to our employees, like sketching, playing the guitar, a new language etc., and one of our employees who learned to sketch even helped design our new logo.
Not only does this help build a strong team spirit, but it contributes to individual personality development.
When they are pursuing other things, it keeps their day more interesting and fun, they are less stressed and are more satisfied overall.
3. Arrange meetings and lunches with thought leaders in your industry
A strong team is driven, motivated and yearning to do more, learn more and prove itself.
One great way to keep your team motivated is by arranging meetings with thought leaders in your industry.
Thought leaders like Steve Case and Ted Leonsis usually have a lot of stories to share and insights that only they are privy to. They predict trends, anticipate problems, and analyze solutions.
These kinds of interactions will motivate your team to take initiative, gain more knowledge and develop their career.
4. Unlimited vacation or unlimited work from home at least
It sure isn’t easy to make this work, but you won’t be the first. Many companies like Netflix, Virgin, Prezi already did.
Before you misunderstand, this doesn’t mean that employees can take leave for months together regularly and expect a pay from you. It’s just that whenever they feel like they need some time off to recharge themselves, a leave balance won’t stand in their way.
In fact, I think enabling this sort of flexibility is a way to delegate responsibility to your employees. It’s almost like saying – ‘there you go, you can take as many leaves as you want, we trust your judgment’.
If you select the employees with the right attitude, they won’t take advantage of this benefit and it might also build a sense of self-monitoring in them, a sense of ownership.
5. Give public appreciation for innovative thinking and private appreciation for high performance
When someone comes up with a great innovative idea, appreciate them publicly and give them the ownership to plan and execute the idea. This will encourage everyone in the team to push themselves to think outside the box.
Once the idea is executed and if the team member did a great job, show your appreciation in private or in the form of a bonus.
I think that publicly appreciating a star performer can cause a rift in the team and before you know it, everyone in the team will try to achieve individual goals instead of team goals.
6. If someone has a new idea, make them in charge of it
I think one great way to build up team collaboration is to keep give a chance for everyone to develop leadership skills and team management skills, rather than one leader-like employee dominating the scene all the time.
This can give rise to bad and authoritarian team dynamics, which is never good.
One we try to solve this problem at our startup is by appointing temporary CEOs.
For instance, when an employee comes up with a brilliant and practical idea, we make him/her in charge or the CEO of this idea, from the inception to the execution of the project. Everyone, including the founders report to this person.
Not only will this technique encourage your employees to come up new innovative ideas, but encouraging meritocracy will foster healthy team dynamics which is very important to build a cohesive happy team.
Wrapping up
Building a strong team is one of the most important, if not the most, tasks of a startup founder. It starts with choosing the right people for sure, but it is also about you, the founder. You have to make very conscious efforts to build a strong team that is united and will withstand any high-stress situation together.
Remember that you also need the right set of tools such as collaborative inboxes, instant communication tools, etc. which can facilitate collaboration and communication within the team.
Making collaboration and stewardship one of your startup’s core foundational value and repeatedly reinforcing this idea in the minds of your employees through your actions and words can help you weave a cohesive culture.
