1. FIRST NAME: i used to go by my middle name, nina, but now i go by pacifica or paci.

2. STRANGE FACT ABOUT YOURSELF: i have a bunch of weird ailments that honestly are just wild. like sometimes my nerves make me spasm or collapse or i’ll become hyperflexible. my kidneys decided they were lonely so they are... snuggled together... and i’ve had cancer a few times. it’s exhausting.

3. TOP THREE PHYSICAL THINGS YOU FIND ATTRACTIVE ON A PERSON: - smile / facial features. outside of aesthetics, you can tell if someone is superficial or genuine through the intensity of their smile, or if they’re fabricating their appearance or background. i wouldn’t want someone to pretend for me. i want them to be how they are. - personal care. i don’t have preferences on hair / grooming outside of being well-kempt. file your nails & clean them ( like if ur a mechanic or factory worker or other types of physical labor, i get it-- but like an office worker with black nails? ick ), brush/comb/finger detangle/style your hair, make sure your clothes are reasonably presentable... clean, like you actively tried to come up with an ensemble. - physique. not saying people need to be like 8 pack or straight out the gym. nor am i saying i need someone to be like mega massive or mega thin. but preferably someone who like... is comfortable in the skin they’re in, and cares about their body. at the least, cares about what goes in their body and how much their body does for them.

4. A FOOD YOU COULD EAT FOREVER AND NOT GET BORED OF: haribo snacks.

5. A FOOD YOU HATE: i cannot handle the smell of mustard or mayonnaise. i will literally walk out of a room.

6. GUILTY PLEASURE: i try to cut out needless carbs and snack foods, but y’all........ throw some good naan or pita at me and i’m a sucker. i love my hot cheetos and takis, pls don’t take them from me.

7. WHAT DO YOU SLEEP IN: a sweater and panties tbh. i’ve turned into that basic single person in their 20s. if i’m cold i’ll throw on sweatpants too.

8. SERIOUS RELATIONSHIPS OR FLINGS: i vastly prefer serious relationships, but there’s got to be a lot of build up to it for me to pursue someone in that manner. that being said, idk why, apparently i seem unapproachable or intimidating, but i’ve always had to ask out the person i liked.... ask me out first, u fools. i’ve tried to do flings but like i always feel guilty afterward bc i’m not invested, i just pretend hoping maybe i’ll fool myself in the process and i don’t lmao. that being said, it’s been like over a year since i’ve last dated, and two years had passed between that partner and the previous one.

9. IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN THE PAST AND CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOUR LIFE, WOULD YOU AND WHAT WOULD IT BE: nothing. maybe switch my triple minor to an interdisciplinary double major because that sounds cooler in this point in my life. but other than that? i feel like i did well with the cards that were handed to me. they shaped me into who i am now. and now i’m trying to continue to be a person past me would be proud of. i want to live a life with little to no regrets. to pursue everything i can while i have the opportunity to.

10. ARE YOU AN AFFECTIONATE PERSON: physically, yes. emotionally, it depends. my coworkers are always either thrilled to see me or are like “ it’s paci being over the top cute. ” i love coming into the room to give hugs or do random acts of service or to shower someone with surprise gifts just to say i appreciate them. however, i can be emotionally distant at times and i don’t like to involve people into things. i still feel guilty on most occasions when i vent, even though i know it’s healthy to do. i feel like it’s not other people’s responsibility to deal with my problems or have to endure them, even if it’s as little involvement as listening. such an attitude isn’t great, but... at least i can recognize that now? lmao. u know. baby steps. i’m still learning to trust and let people in. when my former best friend broke my heart it really messed me up in a lot of ways.

11. A MOVIE YOU COULD WATCH OVER AND OVER AGAIN: i love pocahontas, mulan, princess and the frog, and peter pan starring mary martin. i’ve been watching that specific peter pan since like..... birth......... and it’s still one of my favorite films.

13. YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO KEEP ANY ANIMAL AS A PET, WHAT DO YOU CHOOSE: a long-haired cat, preferably a tortoise color. i’ve always thought munchkin cats were the cutest. i’d want something that is as independent and self-sufficient as i am.

15. PIE OR CAKE: pie. i don’t eat nearly enough of it. kinda underrated in the pnw, i feel like? but in the midwest we loved pies... kinda miss that.

17. CELEBRITY CRUSH: shrugs? no one atm. i do not keep up with pop culture these days. can i count kyo from dir en grey? i’ve thought he was hot for the last 15 years and counting........ 14 y/o me was really like “ he’s the one ” too!!

IF YOU COULD TRAVEL ANYWHERE, WHERE WOULD YOU GO: i love visiting friends. and like... idk? japan is still interesting, as is italy and greece and jerusalem. but i don’t have like... a burning urge to go anywhere. i’d like to return to vietnam & cambodia at some point as well. people tell me melbourne is my kind of vibe, but... i’ll get there when i get there.

20. DO YOU SCARE EASILY: i do. but i still like scary games bc i enjoy the thrill and chase. suspense is really cool-- gore is not, imo.

IPHONE OR ANDROID: android. i’ve been using samsung galaxy phones since like 2013 and i’m not going back now. i had an ipad once and........ i’m over that. but i’m not like gonna participate in the dumb android vs apple debate........ we’re adults and it’s 2020, c’mon now. put ur energy into something else.

DO YOU PLAY ANY VIDEO GAMES: y’all......... i wish i could be like ‘ i’m a gamer grl ’ but the truth is that i mainly collect games and say i’ll play them but it takes me a trillion years sfdgiohfgiohdf. my backlog is shameful. we don’t talk about that. that being said, i just took up ace attorney: spirit of justice this evening & i’ve been playing through kingdom hearts iii and yakuza 0 as of late.

DREAM JOB: to write poetry & creative nonfiction at my leisure dfogihdohg. travelling writer, sharing about cultures all over the world & the beauty of interaction. very whimsical, i know! i also love studying languages and culture...... so it’s no question writing, sociology, cultural anthropology and linguistics were/are my fields of study.

Are you mad at your best friend right now? I guess it depends who that is. I’m not mad at em. I have to get out of the habit of calling Kile my best friend, but he has been my other half for so long. I’m not mad at him.. I just.. I guess I am just so sad wishing he wanted me the way I thought he did.

Do you know anybody with a pet snake? Ugh. Gross yes. I am not close with these kinds of people.

Do you buy your underwear in a pack or seperately? Either way. In a pack is convenient and cheaper, but seldom allows for cute undies. Buying individually is proving to be great for style, but expensive.

Have you ever made fun of anybody and later became their friend? I never really made fun of Nathan, I just would smack him with a plastic baseball bat.

Is the lamp on in the room you're in? Right now only this new little egg shaped lamp that is trying to die.

Do you have a pair of shoes that you can only wear with one or two outfits? Uhhh, maybe like ... no. Actually no, I think most of my shoes are interchangeable.

Is there any drink that you absolutely MUST drink cold? I genuinely prefer my drinks cold. I think the only warm drinks I like are hot chocolate or tea.

Did you sleep in past noon today? Woof, no.

Did your grandma ever tell you about her love life? I have never had a personal conversation with my paternal grandmother, and no longer have an opportunity since she was killed. My maternal grandmother has shared very little because she seems to think being private is like a badge of honor. She was in love once in college, but her parents ruined it and he let go and moved on. She never did. She ended up “settling” for my grandpa -- who was an awesome guy. She just wasn’t really in love, she did it because that’s who her parents wanted.

Have you ever painted anybody's nails aside from your own? Yes.

Anything exciting happening in the month of September? It’s my mom’s birthday which should be a national holiday. I can’t afford to spoil her, but hopefully I’ll be able to make it fun somehow.

Who is your last missed call from? I think my sister. I wish I had calls from Kile. It’s good I don’t, cus I would be tempted to answer. But it would be so good to hear his voice on voicemail. Sigh.

On May 31, 2019 the biggest addition in Disneyland’s history finally opened to the public, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. This $1 billion new land has had fans salivating for years, promising an immersion into the world of Star Wars the likes of which has never before been seen. This week I had the very unique opportunity to visit Galaxy’s Edge twice, and today I want to share my impressions about this remarkable new addition to the Disney experience. I’ll also provide some background information and how visitors can access the world of Star Wars.

How to visit

If you want to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at the Disneyland Resort between May 31 and June 23, 2019, a reservation and theme park admission are required. There is no additional cost to make a reservation, but reservations are currently not available. There is one backdoor way to still get one of those coveted time slots, by staying at a Disneyland Resort hotel. After June 23, anyone with a valid theme park admission will be able to access the new land. Galaxy’s Edge will open in Walt Disney World on August 29, 2019 and while there isn’t expected to be a reservation process, the crowds will be substantial.

What is it?

This massive 14-acre new land builds on the Star Wars story but on a planet that has not been seen in the cannon. The land takes place on a far-flung planet named Batuu and the largest village, Black Spire Outpost. According to the backstory, it’s home to rogues, scoundrels, smugglers and members of the Resistance. The landscape is just as rough, with enormous rock formations that give the village its name. This is the world I excitedly walked into earlier this week.

The rides

There are two rides in Galaxy’s Edge, although only one is open at the moment, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run. This simulator ride takes guests, 6 at a time, into the Millennium Falcon to run their own smuggling mission with each person assigned a different crew role. But, as I learned, it’s so much more than that.

Guests are assembled into groups of 6 – the flight crew. Each person is assigned a role for the attraction: pilots, gunners and engineers. I didn’t fully appreciate just how interactive the attraction is, but these assignments were my first clue that it was going to be an experience unlike anything else. Before it’s time for the ride, each group hangs out in the Millennium Falcon where every detail is exactly the same as in the movies. Even if you aren’t a fanatic you’ll recognize these iconic scenes. Riders are then escorted into the cockpit, told to press any button that blinks and it’s off! The ride is a simulator ride that reacts to how well each member performs their jobs. If the pilots don’t react fast enough, the Falcon crashes. If the gunners can’t zap the bad guys, then they zap you. It’s an amazing attraction and totally unlike anything else I’ve ever experienced. It’s a fantastic anchor for the land.

The second ride, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, will open later this year.

The food

Food is always an important part of the Disney experience, and that’s especially true in Galaxy’s Edge. No detail was left out of the planning for this innovative new land, and the food and drink options are I think just as important as the ride and other thematic details.

Oga’s Cantina – Without a doubt this is the star of Galaxy’s Edge and will be one of the most popular spots to visit for just about all guests. Modeled after the legendary dive bars found in the Star Wars movies it’s everything you’d expect and more. Everything offered, from the cocktails and mocktails to beer and wine were all specially created for Galaxy’s Edge and, from my experience, deliver on the promise. However, the Cantina may be more popular that Disneyland thought as the lines to get in are the longest anywhere in Galaxy’s Edge. Disney is constantly trying to improve the visitor experience in Oga’s, but since the seating is limited it’s a challenge. When I visited, everyone was directed to a central line where we registered our phone numbers to be placed in a virtual queue. Then we could experience Galaxy’s Edge as we wanted to until we received a second text indicating it was time to return to Oga’s. At that point it’s another 10-20 minute wait until you can get in. I was in the virtual queue for 85 minutes or so before I received the notification. Once inside, Disney is trying to limit guests to two drinks each, in order to cycle people through the experience. But it’s well worth the effort; the level of detail is of course out of this world.

Milk Stand – This is another one of the cult favorites that will soon take on a life of its own. Both blue and green milk are served and are fashioned after the refreshing beverages seen in the films. The Blue Milk and Green Milk sold at the Milk Stand are frozen-style beverages similar to a milkshake or smoothie. Both drinks are non-dairy blends of coconut and rice milks and Blue Milk has dragon fruit, pineapple, lime and watermelon flavors and Green Milk has Mandarin orange, passion fruit, grapefruit and orange blossom flavors. The vegan drinks have taken some people by surprise since the consistency isn’t that of milk but of a slushy, but I thought they were good. Blue was my favorite, as it has been with many other patrons.

I also took the time to order dinner at Ronto Roasters. Located next to the market stall the thing to get here is the Ronto Wrap: roasted pork and grilled sausage with peppercorn sauce and tangy slaw wrapped in pita. Paired with a chilled glass of Meiloorun Juice and I had the perfect meal.

The shops

What to buy in Galaxy’s Edge is also a surprisingly important part of the experience because, believe it or not, they’re unique experiences in their own right. You won’t find the ear-shaped bubble wands or standard Disney fare in these stores no, they’re immersive Star Wars experiences just like everything else in Galaxy’s Edge.

Lightsabers and droids – If you’ve ever wanted your own lightsaber, this is your chance. Entering into Savi’s Workshop, guests customize their very own weapon to take home, at a price of $200. For $100 you can go through a similarly personalized and bespoke experience to construct your own droid. Both experiences are just that, an experience and is about so much more than buying something. They take visitors into the world of Star Wars and I’ve never seen anything quite like it.

My budget didn’t allow for the lightsaber, but I did build my very own droid and I’m so glad I did. Walking in the first thing one notices is the assembly line full of droid parts. One you pay for the droid, either the BB or R2 style, you’re given a basket and told to pick out the parts for the droid. This is where you customize it anyway you want, using any color combinations that strike your fancy. You then take the parts over to a tech who helps you assemble and activate the droid. It’s a fun experience and bound to be a very popular one, especially since the droid then interacts with objects around Galaxy’s Edge for the duration of your visit.

The other shops in Galaxy’s Edge also bear mentioning because Disney has taken the same level of detail found throughout the land to the items available for sale. These are specially designed pieces totally unlike anything else found in Disneyland and are very creative. When I was there, the most popular one of these shops was the Creature Stall where you can pick out your very own Star Wars creature to take home; they even provide a special carrying case for them.

Overall impression

I enjoyed my experiences in Galaxy’s Edge, although I did leave feeling as if I missed something. Maybe I need to return during the day when I can see more of the details, because I had the distinct impression that I didn’t make the most out of my time there. Disney built Galaxy’s Edge so that the entire land itself is the attraction. No detail was overlooked and not once is the illusion broken. Cast members chat to guests as if it really was a planet in the Outer Rim and even the Coke bottles were specially designed. Just like anything else, Galaxy’s Edge will evolve over time and enhancements made to perfect the visitor experience. Guests too will better learn how to enjoy the new land, with each visit learning something new. Simply said though, Galaxy’s Edge truly is an amazing achievement and it’s impossible not to leave completely awestruck with the experience.

Day 14: Sleeping In, Shopping, and YAMAS! Today we had basically a full free day, so while Natasha edged out of our room at 9:30 to go downtown with some of the other girls, I woke up at 9:30am and had a nice slow start to the morning with Carolina. It's been an amazing journey so far, but my body (and my mind) isn't conditioned for this kind of energetic lifestyle. So I got ready and even blow-dried and curled my hair. I wore my favorite top (Chris Pratt as Star-Lord with the raptors behind him--the Raptor Five) and a pair of Capri jeans, which ended up being a really nice outfit to explore in. We met Natasha downtown a little after noon at an art shop for a guy who had amazing oil paintings. He was so talkative and passionate that he reminded us a lot of the guy we bought our oils from in Venice, which just seemed so perfect. This time it was Natasha who picked out a giant piece (much bigger than the one I got in Venice), but it was so entirely stunning. I picked out a smaller one and a medium sized one, and he discounted them so I could get both for 100 euros even, which was lovely. We ended up talking to him for probably an hour or more total and he told us all about his work, Athens, Greece in general, and the islands (apparently Santorini is the busiest and Paros is gorgeous because it's very native and not a whole lot of tourists go there). After we finished talking with Yanis, the painter, we walked around the downtown area and did some other tourist-y shopping. We found some relatively good postcards and I found a cute Athena shirt, then we got caught in a torrential downpour that was not only rain, but also golf-ball sized hail. So, naturally, we took a quick video of that and then edged our way around to a nearby restaurant we saw to wait out the storm. It was a cute, home-y sort of place just across a square from Yanis's gallery, and it had a lot of very authentic food. I got a dish that was artichokes and potatoes in a lemon sauce (turned out to be a lot more like artichokes, potatoes, peas, and carrots in a lemon-ish sauce, but it was still very yummy!). I realized here that Greek food isn't like Italian. Not in the way you would think--but in the fact that Italian's don't give you extras. They don't do "sides" or big portions or anything like that. What you order is what you get and it's usually a smaller portion than you anticipated. Greek food is not that way. It's more than you ordered, it's big. And it's filling as hell. Delicious. But very VERY filling. Needless to say, I picked out all the artichokes and the carrots, but still left about half of my plate full because it was so filling. After lunch, we did some more shopping (because what else do you do in a market other than eat and shop?). Natasha and I were looking for a list of items, so we started down them. Jewelry was the hardest one. Sure, we found all of the little "for the friend" items, but it was jewelry that stumped us the most. We both really wanted a ring from Greece, and the main square we were at literally had two dozen or more jewelry shops just down the three streets we walked, but either nothing would catch our eye, or the ones that did were thirteen hundred or more euro. Until... So we walked into this shop on a whim because I saw these gorgeous goblets and glasses with this beautiful gold metal pattern fused to the outside and they were just stunning, so I wanted to take a closer look. The man who owned the shop came over to us and introduced himself, telling us he was originally from Crete, but that he and his father had owned the store for about 40 years now and that it used to be his dad, but now he designed everything in the shop. He asked what we were looking for and we said rings, so he pulled out this tray. They were all relatively simple, with a silver band with some designs, and a gold-plated ring of small spheres surrounding a gemstone--he had them in nearly every gem. And they were so lovely. He told us they were 55, but he would give them to us for a discount. We tried a few of them on--mainly the different shades of blue. I was really drawn to this turquoise aquamarine stone, but so was Natasha, so I started trying on a bunch of different ones. He picked out this lighter aquamarine and put it on my finger, telling me that was my ring. I wasn't sure at first, but the longer I looked at it, the more I loved it. It's a lighter blue, but it shines so much and catches the light in such a lovely way. Natasha ended up picking one with a moonstone, which he said represents good luck, and he dropped the price more to 40 euro and he even gave us both a free shot of the liquor native to Crete (something that sounded vaguely like "Dothraki" when he said it). We kept exploring after that and I found this lovely white, floor-length dress that I spent 45 euro on (it was more than I wanted, but she knocked off 5 from the original price and I figured it could come out of my jewelry budget since I had anticipated a 200 euro ring). I think I'll probably wear it tomorrow on the beach once we make it to Santorini! Yay! We walked around some more and then my feet started to hurt, so while Natasha browsed for things for her parents, I parked myself (kind of in the gutter) on a curb and called my mom for a bit. When I hung up, this lady popped out of the shop next to me (a clothing store) and looked super worried. "Are you okay? Would you like a chair? Would you like water? Food?" She was so persistent, and I kept saying no, that I was fine, I was just resting, but she wouldn't take no for an answer. She came out a couple more times, bringing me a stool and one of those giant liter water bottles--"it's not cracked *makes opening motion* I didn't open. You open!"--and then she came back with a portion of a sandwich. "You hungry? You eat! If you don't want, I can have them make something else *points to the restaurant across the street*" I tried to assure her that no, I wasn't hungry, and, yes, I was indeed going to be okay. "Are you sure?" "Yes, I'm sure." "You want something to eat? Yes or no?" "No, I'm fine." "You need food? Yes or no? Yes?" "No." "You have very pretty eyes." "Oh, thank--" "You want food?" Dear lord. I felt like she was going to take me in as a pet like a stray on the street. So I finally got up and walked down the street a bit to find Natasha, and then insisted we walked around to avoid the shop (which ended up getting us lost a bit), and then headed back to the Monastiraki metro station. We hoofed it back to the hotel and then went up to our room on the 13th floor to change into our outfits for our Greek Night dinner!! Now, this was one of the optionals we were super excited for. It was going to be an authentic Greek dinner with music and even a dance lesson from Alexandra. We met her down at the Monastiraki Square and then walked over to the restaurant where our group of 10 (including ourselves) was waiting. The food, man. Food. They brought white and red wine and then a mess of appetizers all at once (unlike our Italy dinner where the 5 courses took like 3 hours). There was fresh bread and deep fried feta with honey, a traditional Greek salad, fried zucchini with tziaki (literally don't know how to spell that, sorry) sauce, and an feta-coated eggplant dish. I wasn't a huge fan of the eggplant, but everything else was AMAZING. AKA I ate too much and by the time my lamb dish came, I was only able to eat a few bites of it before deciding all I had room for was the pita bread (which was the most amazing pita bread in the world. Just saying). Dessert was yogurt with honey, but we didn't really have time for that because Alexandra deciding to start pushing tables to the side so we could learn to dance. She started with a simple one-person dance, which was a lot like belly dancing, and only four or so of the ladies joined in on that (including me, Natasha, and the other Kristen). It was a lot of fun and we laughed basically the entire time. After that, she pushed more tables out of the way and pulled everyone up so we could learn one of the circle dances that you would see in Greek movies. 1. We didn't have enough space, so everyone was tripping over everyone else. 2. My Grecian-style dress was floor-length, so both I and other people stepped on my dress the entire time, so I kept tripping. 3. It was definitely fun though! The dinner wrapped up pretty quick after that. A bunch of the others were going to a bar called the Six Dogs and when we said we were going back to the hotel (Natasha, myself, and a girl named Ashley who was an old lady like us), Alexandra told us, "No! You have to at least see it! Go with them." So we went with them. The bar was down another street past the metro and kind of nestled in what looked like an alleyway. There were these colorful lighted-up steps leading down from street level that sort of ended up in this low-level courtyard kind of thing. There were all these twinkle lights and it was super pretty. Gus and Kristen tried to get us to stay for at least a drink, but we decided we still wanted to go back, so we made our way back to the metro and walked back to the President's Hotel. We stopped off in the lobby to see if we could get onto the wifi (which we barely could), and then Natasha and I went up to the roof bar to see what the city looked like at night (gorgeous!). Then we went back to the room to (ugh) pack. Thankfully, we both still had our second personal-sized cakes from the bakery last night, so we ate those (super chocolate-y goodness!) and then spent a lot of time talking with Carolina about stuff, and trying to attempt the packing thing. I swear, I haven't really gotten any better at it. I had planned on doing a bit of reading before going to sleep, but when we turned off the lights at 1am, I couldn't keep my eyes open and completely fell asleep. Day 14 complete!
