The DJ changed the song and the crowd roared in excitement. Everyone who was at the bar abandoning their stations to get on the dance floor and dance – lights flickering the the beat of the song. The sea of people moving to the beat, hands in the air, hands on their partners, grinding and sweat accumulating on foreheads or small beads of sweat trickling down between cleavage –no one cared. Everyone was having fun at this small dive bar in downtown London.
I laughed at my best friend, who was dancing next to me making weird faces, this is a vacation well spent. We’ve been friends since middle school, and we have always wanted to travel overseas.
Our bodies squishing together as the crowd grew on the floor, so I placed my hands on her hips, and she placed her hands on my shoulders as we continued to dance.
“Ooooo, he’s cute!” she yelled in my ear. I followed her eyes to see a handsome guy, with piercing blue eyes and blonde hair dancing with some brunette.
“Go ask for a dance” I yelled back. She rolled her eyes and gave me a hug.
“I’m here with you tonight. I can’t leave you hanging… unless some strapping young lad comes along” she winks and we continued to dance. She can get any guy she wanted, she was beautiful, but we made a pact we wouldn’t abandon each other… or more likely, she wouldn’t abandon me.
I’m quieter, introvert. I wouldn’t walk up to a random guy for a dance like she would.
As on que, I felt a pair of larger hands on my waist, and small bump to my backside as someone sidled up behind me and made himself comfortable. My friend smiled and winked and turned away and made a bee line to Mr. Blue Eyes.
I internally screamed at her as she approached the blonde-haired boy and he welcomed her with a big smile.
Figures. I mentally grumbled.
I turned in the guy’s arms to get a better look at him and I suddenly didn’t want to dance. He was older, hairy and moved me the wrong way. He looked down at me as if I was prey, and it sent shivers up my spine, and it wasn’t the good kind.
“Excuse me” I yelled over the music and disconnected his arms from my waist.
Walking to the bar I ordered a water and sat down to give my aching feet a break.
I observed the people at the bar, people talking to the bartender, couples making out and people talking. I looked to my left and noticed a gentleman with a baseball hat on, which covered part of his face, talking to a younger guy with a mop of curls on his head and a cute button nose.
Geez, how old do you have to be to sit at the bar, he doesn’t look a day over-
My thoughts were interrupted by a deep voice.
“Kind of rude to run away when someone was dancing with you,” I turned to see the older man who was dancing with my backside. I raised my eye brows shocked.
“uh-“ I started again and grabbing my drink, watching where he put his hands. The last thing I need is some stranger putting something in my drink. He put his hand on the bar and called for two hard drinks, while the other hand grazed my shoulder.
I attempted to shrug it off but he applied more pressure.
“Kind of rude dancing with someone uninvited,” I quipped back. I didn’t want to piss him off, not knowing what he was capable of, but I wanted my voice to be heard.
“Oh, but sugar bottom, your beautiful,” he chuckled, taking a drink. He pushed the other drink towards me and I shook my head.
“No, I’m good,” I said sternly. His smile started to fade slightly and he leaned into me.
I started to lean away from him as he approached and I felt something bump my back. “Hey!” I heard a playful voice chuckle. I turned my head to see I leaned into the guy with the baseball cap, and he looked at me with warm brown eyes as I was trying to give him an ‘S.O.S’ signal through mine. “Sorry,” I mumbled.
His smile dropped a bit, “That’s alright love, it’s just a drink… are you ok?” he asked as his eyes flickered up to the older man.
“Ye-Yea, im fine. Sorry, I didn’t mean to spill your drink. I was just leaving” I stammered, wanting to get away from this guy.
That was my que to leave, as I grabbed my water and pushed pass the elder.
“Sorry man, my girl has had a bit to drink, ya know,” I overheard him make an excuse. Once I got to the edge of the dance floor I searched the crowd for my friend and I couldn’t find her.
Damn her!
Do you ever get that feeling someone is watching you? Yup… I felt it. I turned back to the bar and I see the elder guy walking towards me.
I panicked. Bouncers! Bouncers are big and I’ll tell them what’s happening, they’ll help me.
I started to walk toward the bright exit sign, pushing passed the sea of sweaty bodies.
Once I got to the door I pushed it open and closed it immediately. I took a deep breath and saw a vacant chair. Damnit! The chair the bouncer once sat is vacant. I took in my surroundings— The alley was quiet, too quiet, so I turned to go back in the club.
I was met with a gentle thud. The door was locked.
“Son of a bitch!” I whispered harshly and pulled my phone from my back pocket.
‘Where are you!?’ I texted my friend and the door swung open, knocking the phone from my hands and the door connected with my toes.
I took a step back, trying to find my phone on the floor and gave a pathetic whimper as I felt my toes throb.
Once I grabbed my phone I looked up to see the older man, with a crooked smile.
“There you are. Good idea to come outside. It’s too loud in that joint” He stated, eyeing my smaller figure, as he closed the door.
“Look dude… I don’t know how many hints you need. I am not interested. Just leave me alone,” my voice wavering, trying to not sound panicked.
“It’s ok little girl. I just want to talk, get to know you” he eyed me, walking closer. Every step he made towards me, I would take a step back.
“You are very… very beautiful” He smiled, stalking me.
I took one more step back and turned to run, but I felt his rough, calloused hands grab my wrist, stopping my movements.
“Let go of me asshole!” I wailed and turned to hit his chest, trying to rip my hand away from him.
“Ssshhh,” he cooed, laughing, and I felt him grab my other hand, pulling me close to his chest as both my hands were surrendered. He smelled of cheap cigarettes, whiskey and stale body odor.
“Hey! Get off of her!” I heard someone yell, and the door slam harshly
The older gentleman was shoved off of me, and I stumbled back, falling down to the concrete floor. I looked up and saw the two boys from the bar, they formed a human barricade between me and the creep.
“I think you should go before we call the police,” The curly hair boy said, voice dripping venom.
“Oh, come on guys, that’s my girlfriend. She’s drunk, I’m just trying to get her home,” the elder defended, laughing.
“That didn’t look like the friendly banter between couples. Give us her address and we’ll make sure she gets their safely” the guy in the baseball hat spat, fists clenched.
“Good grief little girl… your too much trouble. I’m out,” the elder mumbled and turned to stumble away, throwing his arms in the air.
“You should be ashamed of yourself! Treating ladies like that!” The baseball cap kid yelled.
The elder didn’t acknowledge him, he kept laughing and walking down the dark alley.
The boys turned around, and the guy in the baseball hat leant his hand for me to grab to help me off the floor. I stared at it for a second, and then looked up at him.
“It’s ok… I’m not going to hurt you. Did you come here with someone?” He questioned, patiently waiting to take my hand.
“Dude… I think she’s in shock,” The younger one mumbled, as I stared up at him. I tentatively took the hand and stood up.
“You alright?” He asked, as I gave a single nod staring at him, feeling small pools of tears start to cloud my vision. “I’m Tom” He said placing a hand on his flat chest. “This is my little brother, Harry” He introduced us.
“y/n” I whimpered. He smiled and nodded his head.
“Let’s get you inside. Have a drink of coke or something, yea?” he asked with a warm smile.
I nodded, and I felt two hands on my back, both brothers guiding me to the door. “Did you come with someone” He tried again. “Her name is Angela” I whispered, as the younger brother, start to bang on the door, hoping someone will hear us.
I eyed this Tom character briefly, as he rubbed my upper back soothingly. He pulled out his phone and dialed something and placed it to his ear. He shot a glance at my lingering eyes, and gave me a toothy smile, which made me smile weakly at him.
“Hey! Where are you?” He spoke into the receiver.
“I’m out back, come let us in” He stated and hung up the phone. A minute later the blonde that my friend, Angela, was dancing with opened the door.
“What are you doing out-“ He stopped mid-sentence, taking in my concerned face, and his face dropped. “What happened?” He said concerned, as he moved aside to let us in.
Upon entering the club again, I saw my friend waiting at the end of the hallway. As we made eye contact her eyes went wide and she rushed towards me. “Where have you been!? I got your text but you never texted me back,” She yelled over the music, hugging me tightly.
“Some creep made advances towards her in the back,” Tom said nonchalantly and waved his hand, encouraging us to follow.
“Oh my gosh dude, I am so sorry,” She said, squeezing me, keeping me by her side as we walked to a quieter area in the club.
Drinks were ordered as everyone made small talk. I learned that Mr. blue eyes was name Harrison, and he was Tom and Harry’s friend. They too were on vacation, or as they put it, on holiday.
“So... California huh? Love it there. Very beautiful, lots to do there” Tom smiled, taking a drink of his beer.
“Yea,” I smiled and shrugged. “You can surf and go to the mountains in one day if you wanted” I finished, taking a drink of my coke. I wanted to stay and talk to these guys… but I wasn’t feeling like being out anymore. Thank you Mr. Creep for ruining my night.
“Thank you, guy’s, for helping y/n. But we should get going. It’s getting late” Angela stated, rubbing my arm, sensing my anxiety.
“Let us walk you” Harrison said politely. “Agreed” Tom chimed in.
“Oh no, its ok. We’re calling a cab, and our hotel is down the street. We’ll be ok.” Angel smiled and batted her eyes at this Harrison.
We all got up and walked outside and was met with a cool breeze. Angela hailed for a cab and we all said our goodbyes.
As the cab pulled up to take us to our hotel, I looked back at the boy’s one last time and gave a nod, as a silent thank you. Tom caught my eyes and smiled warmly and nodded back.
We got into the cab but right before we pulled out to traffic I saw I body run up to our window, and the body crouched down, showing Tom’s smiling sweet face. I gave a warm smile and rolled down the window.
“Listen, I feel horrible that you girls came out tonight to have a good time… only for it to be ruined” He said sincerely.
He placed his arm on the cab for support and leaned in slightly, “He mate, do you have a pen and paper” Tom asked the cab driver. He handed it to Tom and he wrote something on the paper. “We’re throwing a party next weekend. My going away party before I leave for work. You girls are more than welcome to come” He smiled, not breaking eye contact as he handed me the paper.
“Maybe” I smiled at him. “Thank you, Tom.”
He winked at me and stood up, hitting the roof of the cab, as a signal.
We pulled away and Angela and I simultaneously took a deep breathe in and exhaled.
“He was cute” She mumbled.
“Yea… too cute” I said staring out the window.
“What’s written on the paper” She questioned nosily
“His number and address I’m assuming” I said, crinkling the paper and shoving it in my pocket.
“Too bad we won’t be here next weekend…” She faltered.
“Yea” I mumbled, playing with the crinkled paper in my pocket, and staring out the window as the crisp London night passed us by.
Fin!
