My muscles were in complete repose, my eyes began to flutter against the sudden weight that forced them to shut, and reality around me began to dissipate. I drew in a long breath as I let myself succumb to the peaceful atmosphere of mine and Spencer’s bedroom, the moonlight that crept through the window enhancing the serene ambiance.
I felt the soft fabric of the duvet on the skin of my legs, pulling it over the entirety of my body as I drifted away into a well deserved slumber. Unfortunately, those plans were unmatched to the wails of my crying son in the nursery next to the bedroom.
I groaned, clutching my head while disdainfully throwing myself up from the bed and dragging myself to where my son laid in distress. Walking into the quaint, but pastel colored room, my eyes landed on the clock above the cradle. Exhaustion infiltrated my every move and the fact that the clock read 2:48 am made the occasion less desirable.
“Hey Pascal, hey buddy” I cooed, picking up the small infant that permeated the room with his blaring cries. It was Spencer’s idea to name him after his favorite French mathematician. At first, Spencer was definite on naming the baby Schrodinger after the Austrian physicist, which was followed by the explanation of Schrodinger’s cat and how that unveiled the misconceptions on Copenhagen’s theory of physics. Fortunately for me and the hospital, I was too busy in labor to retaliate by throwing him out of the hospital window for interrupting the birth of our first child with physics history. After a while of deliberation, we both agreed on the name Pascal.
“Shh, it’s okay baby, mommy’s got you” I reassured, laying him on my chest as I bounced on the heels of my feet while swaying side to side. I hummed the tune of Mozart’s Sonata No. 16, the melody subduing the child’s relentless howls as I placed him back into the cradle. I refolded the blanket that swaddled Pascal, tucking in any stray pieces that his tiny feet could slip out of. Finally, I walked over to a music box that rested on top of the baby’s dresser, winding it to play throughout the remainder of the night to encourage the baby’s slumber.
I wish I could be in the same circumstances as Pascal, considering he had a means of going back to sleep. My preferred method was, yet again, staying late at the FBI headquarters in order to assist in a BAU case.
It felt like the same night had been replaying over and over again for the past 2 weeks. I’d get up to soothe the baby, fall back asleep on a lonesome bed, then wake up to a man that would hurry back to work the second his eyes opened. Me and Spencer were becoming estranged, although my concern primarily derived from the possibility of our son not even recognizing his father.
I stumbled back to my room, practically dragging my feet as I tediously made my way back to the comforting sensation of the bed. My entire body screamed for sedation, begging for rest, yet my mind raced with troublesome thoughts about my relationship with Spencer.
My eyes shifted downwards to the emerald ring that Spencer had given me when he proposed. It was the same ring that his mother and grandmother had worn when they were ought to be betrothed. I slouched on the side of the bed, sliding the ring off of my finger and into the drawer of the nightstand and finally attempted to regain the will of maintaining a decent sleep schedule.
Though with my luck, that was yet to happen due to a loud bang that engulfed the apartment, followed by a string of curse words from Spencer’s mouth. With the inclination to investigate battling against my debilitation. I hauled my entire body up off the bed once again to meet Spencer in the living room, where I was met with the view of a lanky boy clutching onto several books that were scattered on the wood floors. If I weren’t in an irritated disposition, I would’ve laughed at the scene displayed in front of me, instead I mustered up a small ‘welcome home’ as I squinted at him.
“Hey Y/N, why are you still up?” He whispered, straddling the books he carried on his knee.
I sighed, wiping the wrinkles off of my forehead. “I-I don’t know, Pascal woke up and I was, yeah- I was just trying to sleep, but he started crying” I explained, stumbling over my words as the fatigue clearly impeded my cognitive ability.
“I’m sorry to hear that Y/N” He walked over to the table next to the door and placed the books back to where they were previously before heading over to the kitchen. “Why don’t you go back to sleep, love?” He suggested, reaching over the counter for the cappuccino machine.
“You’re staying up?” I inquired, ignoring his proposal completely. He sifted through the cabinets to find his favorite Star Trek mug for his coffee, but struggled to locate it. “-third cabinet to the left” I interjected, putting him out of his misery.
He nodded in gratitude, flashing me a tight lipped smile. “Yeah, I just have to finish the paperwork for some case files” He elaborated casually.
I stood over the living room couch, setting myself down on the edge of the cushions as I observed Spencer’s movements. “Are you coming to bed Spence?” I crossed arms, resting my eyes while I continued to feebly converse with him.
“Uhhhhh-” He prolonged his speech, deliberating on how he was going to answer the double edged question. “It’s a really long case Y/N, I’ll try to be in bed as soon as possible” He confessed, watching the steam rise from the coffee pot, indicating that his brew was almost done.
“Okay” I replied monotonously, not having the energy to negotiate with Spencer’s unhealthy work habits. “Do you mind at least checking on the baby next time he gets fussy?” I rubbed the temples of my forehead, feeling a migraine begin to ensue.
“Y/N I don’t think I can, I just have a lot to go over and Hotch is really on me for-”
“Spencer, I understand it’s been a long night for me too” I gripped onto the throw pillows below me as my migraine intensified. “I just- my head’s kind hurting and I just need you to check up on Pascal once and in a wh-”
“Y/N-” He began, pouring copious amounts of creamer into his cup of coffee. “I just need this night alone Y/N, and I really don’t think it’s a lot to ask” He justified, leaning on the counter behind him as he sipped on beverage.
Frustration battled with the almost unbearable pounding in my head, grateful for the dimly lit room that blessed my sensitive eyes. “But Spencer, you’re barely here at home and Pascal needs his da-”
“Yes, but his dad is out in the world, ridding it of all the bad guys that can cause harm to him” Spencer argued, an impatient tone evident behind his words. “Don’t I get any credit for that?”
“Spencer, I’m not saying that-”
“Y/N I’m just having a long night, I need to spend it alone-”
“Oh, just like me and Pascal do every night” I spat, gesturing to the nursery across the hall.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” He interrogated, slamming his mug onto the coffee, but not forceful enough to spill the beverage.
“Spencer, I’m really not trying to fight” I emphasized, forcing my eyes shut as I felt my head pulse.
“Well, it seems like you are” Spencer scoffed, peering at me with an incredulous expression. “At least I’m supporting this household, what are you attributing to it?” He mocked, his voice elevating in volume.
“Spencer, can we not get into that, I’m just saying that I wished you spent more time with Pascal” I admitted, my voice fading out into the darkness as I tried to limit my speech.
“Y/N, don’t you understand that-”
“YES! I understand fully” I impulsively yelled in annoyance, regretting it afterwards with the thought of the baby in my conscience.
Unfortunately the sound of my voice had permeated the poor child’s ears, sending him into a panicked frenzy of deafening cries. I groaned in exasperation, running my hands over my face in exhaustion as the crying fit ensued in the middle a heated argument.
“God! See what you did now” Spencer complained, shaking his head as he made long strides towards the nursery.
“Spence- I don’t think you want to do that” I warned, running along after him. “Spence he hasn’t seen you in a long time, I don’t think he’ll recog-”
“He’s my son Y/N, I think he’ll recognize me” He jeered, mocking my apprehension. He entered into the small room with soft steps, reaching into the cradle with an amiable countenance before coddling the small human against his shoulders. Opposite to Spencer’s intentions, Pascal began to fuss in Spencer’s hold. He kicked and emitted loud screams, resisting against the foreign arms that were around him.
“Spence-” I whispered, although my attempt to gain his attention fell through as he continued to care for Pascal.
“Hey, it’s okay daddy’s he- hey no it’s- Pascal-” Spencer sputtered out, struggling against the infant writhing around on his shoulder. The lines were now apparent on Spencer’s forehead, indicating his exponentially growing frustration.
“Spence, give him to me. I can-” I interjected, but was ultimately shut down by Spencer’s stubbornness.
“I got this Y/N” He stated with determination.
Although even with all his motivation and determination to sedate the small child, the results were dissatisfactory. “Come Pascal- come on buddy” Spencer cooed, now bouncing him side to side. Pascal’s cries engulfed the entire room, giving me a heart wrenching feeling due to my motherly instinct.
A small part of me pitied Spencer’s attempts at reconnecting with his child as he found the results fruitless. By this point, his methods were futile; Pascal’s behavior becoming increasingly volatile. Instinctively I rushed over to Spencer, picking up Pascal in my arms.
Without a second passing by, the infant had calmed down instantaneous. I bounced him side to side, similar to Spencer’s actions, and snuggled him into my chest.
For a moment I caught Spencer’s gaze and what I saw was more than heartbreaking to witness. He looked at me and Pascal with a defeated look, but it wasn’t any ordinary defeated look, he seemed to be in utter despair.
My frustration at him dissipated and was replaced by empathy as his eyes began to water in chagrin. Setting Pascal back into the cradle after he fell back asleep, I turned to face Spencer with a lamentable expression; only to find him gazing at his hands with indignation.
“Spence” I whispered gently. Although without a second thought, he had rushed out of the room, grabbed his belongings, and left the apartment.
I closed my eyes in disquietude, reminded of the migraine I had previously. I waddled back into the bedroom to cuddle into the bed sheets as I let my mind roam the forlorn thoughts that swirled around my head.

Wednesday, 12th June 2019 – Barcelona, Day 2
We hit the ground running first thing in the morning, rattled through the work at a great pace, and finished everything by around 16:30, to our great surprise. I think we’d all expected to need longer but we were all pretty well focussed and it’s amazing what you can do if you try. Thus freed, we all split up in various directions to go and take a look at whatever took our fancy. I’d got a pre-booked ticket for the Hop-On Hop-Off tourist bus and was keen to try and get the lie of the land, ahead of having the full day to be a tourist on Thursday. K from the Danish office (DK), L and S (also from the Copenhagen office) decided they would come with me. We picked up the Red route bus from the Plaza de Catalunya and settled in for a 2 hour tour of some of the hopefully interesting stops around the city.
The red route is described thus: “Covering many of the city centre attractions, the Red Line is the perfect place to start. Begin in the very heart of Barcelona and hop on our open-top bus at Plaça de Catalunya. From here you’ll travel along Passeig de Gràcia, with its luxurious boutiques. As you continue, you’ll pass by some of the most important sites of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics on Montjuïc Hill. Here you can also visit the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya – renowned as the home of the world’s best collection of Romanesque art. As the route comes to an end, you’ll pass through the Medieval Gothic Quarter – hop off here and be sure to visit Plaça de Rei, where, legend has it, Columbus met King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella after he returned from the New World.” It was advertised as taking 2 hours, which meant we’d not have time to hop off anywhere, but it would provide an interesting overview of one part of the city, and as I was basically fact-finding to see if Lynne and I should visit Barcelona this would help increase the information I had at my fingertips.
The tour (as with the blue line) is considered to start, if a hop on hop off tour can really be said to have a start, at the Plaça de Catalunya, where the airport bus had dropped me off the previous day. It’s a grand open space but overly full of pigeons for my liking, the flying rats swarming around to be fed by tourists. In London there’d be a bloke with a hawk keeping them away; here there’s a woman with a high pressure hose constantly washing away the evidence of the birds’ presence. I suspect the man with the hawk is probably cheaper and more efficient…
From here the bus turns up the Passeig de Gràcia, passing the mad modernista (art nouveau) buildings including the cluster known as the Illa de la Discòrdia (the Casa Amatller by Josep Puig i Cadafalch, the Casa Batlló by Antoni Gaudí, the Casa Lleó Morera by Lluís Domènech i Montaner and the Museu del Perfum) and on the other side and a little further north, the Casa Milà “La Pedrera” also by Gaudí, all of which would have to wait for another day and more time for a proper exploration.
From there the bus turns on to the Avinguda Diagonal, and while it doesn’t take in all 11km of it, it does get quite a long way down it. A colleague later found some aerial photos of the city, and the way this avenue cuts across it is really quite remarkable. I haven’t check to see if there is a Barcelona Half Marathon (I’m sure there must be), but if there isn’t that would be an impressive looking course, if boring as hell for the runners because it’s dead straight. These days it’s the financial hub as well as the high-end shopping hub apparently.
We only covered about a quarter of the street before turning off towards the main station, the Estació de Sants, and some rather drab modern architecture. S was starting to think this was a bit of a duff route, and didn’t change her mind for a while. There is a apparently a park with a lake and everything but you can’t actually see it from the bus. It’s lined by some rather odd turrets, the purpose of which I certainly couldn’t fathom. It’s also close to a modern “hard square” that the city seems to have started building/clearing in the 1980s. Oh, and apparently this statue is also a slide!
Things started to get much more interesting after that though, as the bus started edging towards Montjuïc, the glorious green space to the south west of the centre (which also used to host a Grand Prix for a handful of years until 1975). First though, we passed through the Creu Coberta. This is actually the Carrer de la Creu Coberta, which is full of shops, and thus not of massive interest to me. a major commercial street with family-run shops that specialise in textile products, shoes, leather goods and perfume. The Hostafrancs Market, inaugurated in 1888, might be of more interest because I do like a good food market. The more interesting thing was the massive statue, Woman and Bird, by Joan Miró and standing in the Parc de l’Escorxador (Slaughterhouse Park) which is indeed where the cities slaughterhouse used to stand.
The Plaça d’Espanya, up next, gives you a number of options to explore, but again we really didn’t have time to get off and wander about. There’s a rather fine fountain, which was built for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition by Carles Buïgas, and was restored for the 1992 Olympic Games. Nearby are several buildings of massive interest, and by now I was fully convinced that Lynne and I really need at least a long weekend in the city, if not longer than that. Over to one side was the old bull-fighting ring which has been converted into a shopping centre but is still mightily impressive from the outside, whatever you think about bull fighting (for the record I’m against it).
At stop 8, the Barcelona CaixaForum you can see the Pavelló Mies Van der Rohe, an exact reconstruction of the building designed by Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe and Lilly Reich to represent the Weimar Republic at the 1929 International Exposition. There is also the fabulous (at least from the exterior) CaixaForum itself, inside a vast Modernista factory designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch, where there are art exhibitions which I wasn’t going to get to this time round.
We then passed the Poble Espanyol, which we were told contains a collection of the various construction styles to be found throughout the Spanish regions, as well as the Fran Daurel Museum which houses a collection of contemporary art, including works by Dalí and Picasso among others.
All very impressive, but probably not as imposing as the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, inside the vast Palau Nacional, which is a lot more modern than you might expect, dating from the 1929 International Exposition though it looks as it it’s been there a long longer. The road up to it helps the impression of majesty in no small part. I rather suspect that the inside is pretty majestic too, with what is claimed to be the world’s best collection of Romanesque paintings and Catalan art.
We were back with the modern again at the next stop, the Anella Olímpica, the Olympic Ring, built for the 1992 Olympic Games, and now home to one of the city’s largest sporting facilities, inside the Olympic Stadium. This was actually built in 1929, then updated for 1992. I’m told its mechanised structure meant it could be transformed into an artificial sea for the Indoor Windsurfing Championship. On the other side of the road, though not fully visible from the bus, is the Bernat Picornell Pools, a complex opened in 1970 and then remodelled for the 1992 games.
Next we arrived outside the Fundació Joan Miró stop, a building designed by Josep Lluís Sert. It exhibits 14,000 pieces by Joan Miró, many of them preparatory sketches of his projects. The foundation is surrounded by the Laribal Gardens, full of Arabic-inspired fountains and waterfalls, and containing a stone amphitheatre, the Teatre Grec, built in 1929 from an old stone quarry on Montjuïc Mountain. Noticeable from the air when I was flying in were numerous quarries, so I guess it’s no surprise that some alternative use might be made of one once it had served its original purpose.
The one thing I really hadn’t expected in Barcelona was a cable car (in fact, more than one). There’s one on Montjuïc, the Telefèric de Montjuïc, which takes passengers up the mountain to Montjuïc Castle. By all acounts it’s a lot easier than walking, especially in very hot weather. The castle dates from 1640, but most of what’s there now is mid-18th century. I’m sure it would be worth a look, even so.
As we started back down towards the city again, I noticed that people obviously thought it was clever to dropused earphone sets onto the top of bus stops. They were everywhere, in greater or lesser quantities. I wondered if someone went round and collected them up every so often. They must or Barcelona would be knee deep in them by now.
I seem to have missed the Jardins Costa i Llobera, though that may be because what you can see of it from the road is just the occasional cactus.
We were getting towards the end of the tour when we stopped off at the World Trade Center, probably to let the cruise ship passengers bugger off to their great big ships, having failed to see Barcelona properly and not having spent any money in the local economy. You may have guessed I don’t really approve of that sort of tourism in the slightest, having heard complaints from locals in a number of places now, and having been bowled over and barged out of the way by the cruise ship passengers visiting Stonehenge last year because they “were on a schedule”. Anyway, enough of that. The WTCB is “a business park in the form of a ship bathed by the Mediterranean Sea in the Port of Barcelona” it says in the guides. I just thought it was a big building, nice enough if you like that sort of thing, but it wouldn’t be among the things I would remember later. What I would remember is that there’s another cable car over the harbour…
There’s a very tall column, with a statue of Christopher Columbus, pointing out to sea, close to the former Royal Shipyards that now houses the Maritime Museum of Barcelona. From here we could have walked up La Rambla from the bottom end headed towards our hotel, but I was saving all of that for Thursday. We were on our way towards Port Vell, the Old Harbour, which was very run down before the urban renewal program prior to the 1992 Olympics. Now it’s full of shiny yachts (floating gin-palaces as my later father-in-law would have called them), people selling stuff illegally, and the Maremàgnum (a mall containing shops, a multiplex cinema, bars and restaurants), an IMAX cinema, and Europe’s largest aquarium.
There’s also some interesting public art, including the whimsical smiling lobster.
This was all on the way to the Museu d’Història de Catalunya and the Port Olímpic, neither of which really provide much to see from the top of a bus. I was also starting to run out of steam about now, and was winding down towards going back to the hotel to try and round up anyone who needed to know where the evening’s restaurant, the Mont Bar, was. I know, because the guidebook said so, that the museum would tell me all about the evolution of Catalan culture over the centuries, and that the 740 moorings in the marina were created as part of a plan to regenerate the entire coastline of the city before the Olympic Games by creating a large recreational and restaurant area and the residential area of the Olympic Village. The stop is at the bottom of Torre Mapfre and Hotel Arts, the twin skyscrapers that make up the easily recognised skyline of Barcelona’s coast.
There were three stops, left, including the Zoo, which is next to Plaça dels Voluntaris Olímpics, a modern area that sprang up when the the city fathers decided to transform an industrial wasteland into the Olympic Village. From there we passed the Parc de la Ciutadella, where I’d been for a run in the morning before work, finding it quiet, beautiful and full of parakeets at that time of day. It’s a huge park laid out on land previously occupied by a military citadel which in 1888 hosted the Barcelona Universal Exposition. Now, it contains the Catalan Parliament Building and Barcelona Zoo. As I discovered the following day, it was much bigger than I’d thought. Oh, and it has its own Arc de Triomf.
For its penultimate trick, the bus stopped by the Barri Gòtic, top of my list for the following morning. The Gothic Quarter is the historic nucleus of Barcelona, where you can see sections of the Roman wall that surrounded Barcino along with columns of a temple dedicated to Augustus built more than 2,000 years ago on the summit of Mount Tàber. There’s also the Jewish Quarter and Plaça de Sant Jaume, which is still home to government bodies, but the real interest for me was in the civil and religious Gothic buildings, the Cathedral and the Plaça del Rei, the Eglésia de Santa Maria del Pi (Church of Saint Mary of the Pine) and the Basílica dels Sants Just i Pastor (Basilica of Saints Justus and Pastor), built over a Romanesque church and is considered to be the city’s oldest.
I almost certainly wouldn’t have time for all of it, but I’d get round what I could. I had an overview now, and I knew where things were!
Travel 2019 – Barcelona, Day 2 Wednesday, 12th June 2019 - Barcelona, Day 2 We hit the ground running first thing in the morning, rattled through the work at a great pace, and finished everything by around 16:30, to our great surprise.

At the Edge of the World, a New Battleground for the U.S. and China
TORSHAVN, Faroe Islands — The mere existence of the Faroe Islands is a wonder. Tall peaks of snow-patched volcanic rock jut out from the North Atlantic Ocean. Steep cliffs plunge into the deep waters of narrow fjords.
The remote collection of 18 small islands, which sit between Iceland and Norway, is known for a robust puffin population and periodic whale hunts. The semiautonomous Danish territory also has a thriving salmon industry.
Technology is not a common conversation topic among its 50,000 residents. Yet in recent weeks, the Faroe Islands have turned into a new and unlikely battleground in the technological Cold War between the United States and China.
The dispute started because of a contract. The Faroe Islands wanted to build a new ultrafast wireless network with fifth-generation technology, known as 5G. To create that new network, the territory planned to award the job to a technology supplier.
That was when the United States began urging the archipelago nation not to give the contract to a particular company: the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei. American officials have long said Huawei is beholden to Beijing and poses national security concerns.
Then Chinese officials got involved. A senior Faroe Islands government official was recently caught on tape saying that the Chinese had offered to boost trade between the territory and China — as long as Huawei got the 5G network assignment.
“Commercially, the Faroe Islands cannot be very important to Huawei or anybody else,” Sjurdur Skaale, who represents the territory in the Danish parliament, said over breakfast in the capital of Torshavn this week. “The fact that the Chinese and American embassies are fighting over this as hard they are, there is something else on the table. It is about something else than purely business.”
No location is now too small for the United States and China to focus on as they tussle over the future of technology. The Faroe Islands, whose proximity to the arctic gives it added military importance, joins countries across Europe caught in the middle of the two superpowers over Huawei, the crown jewel of the Chinese tech sector.
For more than a year, American officials have applied pressure on Britain, Germany, Poland and others to follow its lead in banning Huawei from new 5G networks. They argue the company can be used by China’s Communist Party to spy or sabotage critical networks. Huawei has denied that it helps Beijing.
But if the European nations side with Washington, they risk harming their economic ties to China, which has a growing appetite for German cars, French airplanes and British pharmaceuticals.
In the Faroe Islands, Bardur Nielsen, the prime minister, has tried defusing the conflict. In a statement, he said his government “has not been pressured or threatened by foreign authorities in relation to the development of a 5G network in the Faroe Islands.”
Any decision about awarding a contract to Huawei, he said, would be made by the local telecommunications company, Foroya Tele.
Foroya Tele said in a statement that it is testing different technologies. The choice of a 5G network provider, it said, “requires significant considerations given the scale and importance of the investment for the Faroe Islands.”
For the people of the Faroe Islands, the debate over Huawei and 5G is rooted in salmon more than in download speeds.
Salmon is central to the territory’s economy. More than 90 percent of the Faroe Islands’ exports are fish, including salmon, mackerel, herring and cod. In the surrounding waters, thousands of salmon can be seen splashing inside large netted rings, where they are bred for meals in Paris, Moscow, New York — and, increasingly, Beijing.
After 2010, the islands’ salmon exports to China picked up. At the time, the Chinese government had slowed the purchase of the fish from Norway in response to the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Chinese human rights activist Liu Xiaobo in Oslo.
China now makes up about 7 percent of the Faroe Islands’ salmon sales. The Faroese government this year opened an office in Beijing to further expand trade.
In 2014, the islands’ salmon sales to Russia exploded after the European Union limited what fish other countries could export there. Those rules do not apply to the Faroe Islands because it is not a part of the European bloc.
In all, salmon exports from the Faroe Islands are expected to top $550 million this year, up from roughly $190 million a decade ago.
“This is the home place of Atlantic salmon,” Runi Dam, a consultant for local fishing companies, said while standing over giant pens filled with about 15,000 salmon each. “We have the perfect environment.”
Now the salmon business has become entangled in the fight over the 5G wireless network.
Last month, America’s ambassador to Denmark, Carla Sands, went public with warnings against Huawei. In an opinion piece in the local Faroe Islands newspaper, Ms. Sands said there could be “dangerous consequences” if the company was allowed to build the 5G network. When countries let Huawei in, she said, “they agree to work under Chinese communist rules.”
In another interview with Danish media this week, Ms. Sands accused a Huawei executive responsible for the Nordic region of “working for the Chinese communists,” who are “exporting their spying, their corruption and bribery around the world.”
Ms. Sands declined to be interviewed.
At the same time, China’s ambassador to Denmark visited the Faroe Islands at least twice in the past two months.
This month, the Danish national newspaper, Berlingske, published the transcript of an audio recording in which a senior Faroe Islands official is summarizing one of the meetings. Herálvur Joensen, a senior aide in the Faroese government, was caught on tape saying China’s ambassador had threated to block a trade deal — and more fish sales — if Huawei was not used for the 5G network.
“If Foroya Tele signed agreement with Huawei, then all doors would be open for a free-trade agreement with China,” he said in the recording. “If this doesn’t happen, then there won’t be a trade agreement.”
A spokesman for the prime minister said Mr. Joensen had not attended the meeting with the Chinese ambassador and was not available for an interview.
Huawei’s critics jumped on the revelations, saying the leaked recording showed the close links between Huawei and the Chinese government.
China’s ambassador, Feng Tie, wrote in Berlingske that the country did not pressure the Faroe Islands. “It’s my duty to secure that Huawei is treated fair and without discrimination in Denmark,” he said. “It’s not at all in Chinese culture to promote threats. Promoting threats is more known from the U.S.”
Huawei said in a statement it was not involved in any talks between the two governments.
In villages and harbors around the islands, people said they were bewildered about being thrust into a battle between China and the United States.
“It is a lice between two nails,” said Rógvi Olavson, who lives in Torshavn and is a lecturer at the local university. “You’re squeezed by the U.S. on the one hand and China on the other.”
While many residents said the Faroe Islands prefer the United States over China, several expressed anger at American officials for demanding that Huawei be banned. They said the company helped build the existing 4G network, which they use to make phone calls or share photos from some of the more far-flung areas of the islands.
Sissal Kristiansen, who designs sweaters and other clothing from Faroese wool, said she had listened to a recent interview with Ms. Sands.
“It awoke this, ‘Oh bugger off’ feeling in me,” she said. “We make our own decisions.”
Others are wary about harming economic ties with China, which they fear will retaliate if Huawei is not selected for the 5G network. Many locals remember an economic crisis in the 1990s, when about 10 percent of Faroese residents ended up moving abroad.
Today, unemployment on the islands is almost nonexistent — just 183 people were out of work as of Friday, according to government statistics. Like other Nordic countries, health care, education and other social services are free. There is virtually no crime.
“China is not just a nice customer, it is a necessity,” said Martin Breum, an arctic expert who has written about the Faroe Islands. The Faroese, he added, “have nothing else to sell to the rest of the world. They live off their fish.”
Martin Selsoe Sorensen contributed reporting from Copenhagen.
