10 options for family-style takeout: OC’s Best Places to Eat 2020
When dining rooms were forced to close, it not only changed the way restaurants operate, it changed the way we all eat. Takeout took on a new meaning, suddenly serving a different purpose. It became less about instant, individual gratification and more about getting food on the table for the entire family.
No restaurant answered that call more heroically than Taco María, where trendsetting chef Carlos Salgado recast his destination dining room known for leisurely multi-course tasting menus as a corner bodega selling carne asada, pinto beans and tamales, completely transforming the concept of meal kits.
Yes, dining rooms are cautiously reopening, but 2020’s not done yet. Many of us are still counting on takeout. And when we don’t have time to cook but still need to put food on the table or stock the fridge, these 10 restaurants can save the day.
Hungry? Sign up for The Eat Index, our weekly food newsletter, and find out where to eat and get the latest restaurant happenings in Orange County. .
Andrei’s
Although the menus vary from week to week, Andrei’s typically offers a dozen different family-style meals customized for two to eight people based upon a featured entree such as barbecue pork ribs, beef stroganoff, Moroccan-style kabobs or Vietnamese-inspired pork chops. 2607 Main St., Irvine, 949-387-8887,

Birrieria el Bandido
Everybody loves taco night, but who’s got the time to make homemade birria? Nobody, at least not when Birrieria el Bandido sells their soulful stewed meats by the pound with enough tortillas and fixin’s to serve an army. Beef or lamb, this is seriously some of the best birria in Orange County. 12081 Garden Grove Blvd., Garden Grove, 657-348-9461

Buttermilk Fried Chicken
There’s nothing more comforting than sitting down to a dinner table and reaching a hand toward a platter piled with 20 pieces of crispy fried chicken. Dibs on a thigh, and can someone please pass the mashed potatoes and braised greens? Also, there’s no rule that says you can’t have coconut cake as an appetizer instead of waiting for dessert. 238 W. Chapman Ave., Orange, 714-941-9124,

Clay Oven
If it’s true that spicy foods boost the immune system, Clay Oven might be the antidote to 2020. The family packs here are meant to serve at least four people, and you can pick and choose what goes into it. You’ll definitely want to include some black-cobra-chili-infused tandoori chicken and probably some curried butternut squash to help offset the heat. Or maybe the mango-ginger-glazed ribs. Tough choices, but it’s hard to go wrong. 15435 Jeffrey Road, Irvine, 949-552-2851,

Harley
There are so many things you can do with a big vat of Dr. Pepper-braised pork shoulder. You could make tacos. Or you could make incredible sandwiches. Or you could just eat it straight. Either way, it comes family-style for two or four, with a choice of two sides. One of those sides should definitely be the Mexican-style corn on the cob. And while you’re at it, you might as well get a pint (or two) of piña coladas. 370 Glenneyre St., Laguna Beach, 949-715-1530,

The Kickin’ Crab
You’ll need to stock up on PPE for this one: gloves, bibs, paper towels, maybe even some protective goggles. The restaurant will supply you with enough butcher paper to protect the dining table. Now dump a large bucketload of cajun-style crawfish, crab legs, shrimp, sausage and corn onto the center of the table and let the free-for-all begin. 1534 Adams Ave., Costa Mesa, 714-760-4909, ; Additional locations in Irvine, Westminster, Santa Ana and Buena Park

Lola Gaspar
The family-style care packages at Lola Gaspar vary from week to week and aren’t always advertised. Sometimes they are teased exclusively on Instagram, so you’ll want to follow along if you wish to catch chef Luis Pérez when he’s butterflying whole chickens and rubbing them with a jerk marinade before grilling the birds over mesquite until the skin has caramelized and the meat is tender and juicy. Don’t forget to load up on mezcal cocktails while you’re at it. They come in the cutest plastic pouches. 211 W. 2nd St., Santa Ana, 714-972-1172,

Noble Bird
Yes, Noble Bird is in Long Beach. And this is a dining guide to Orange County. The restaurant is located at 2nd and PCH, just a few feet across the border. And because everybody loves rotisserie chicken, everybody needs to know about this place. The chickens are superb, especially the ones that are slathered with Korean chili paste, which prompts the birds to char and blister on the spit. Also, as weird as it sounds, get the black rice with blueberries. And don’t forget the brownie bark. 6460 E. Pacific Coast Highway, Long Beach, 562-431-0445,

Taco María
When this is all over, let’s hope and pray that Taco María finds a way to keep the bodega staples alive. Because it’s going to be impossible to return to normal if we can’t just go online and order up a family pack of wood-roasted carne asada, a dozen crispy tacos and a quart of pinto beans to-go. And what of that burger that Salgado created? Taco María doesn’t serve burgers, never will, but the bodega does, and they are phenomenal: triple wagyu patties squished into brioche buns with melty, gooey Spanish blue cheese. 3313 Hyland Ave., Costa Mesa, 714-538-8444,

Vaca
Paella or steak? That’s always been the burning question when dining at Vaca in Costa Mesa. And it’s the same dilemma you’ll need to resolve when ordering family-style takeout: a massive dry-aged ribeye, or a big pan of paella Valenciana. Heads, I win; tails, you lose. 695 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa, 714-463-6060,

Two months ago I took a tour of the New Black Diamond Coal Mine (NBD) Industrial Complex site. Down next to the Maple Valley – Renton Highway it is scraped clean and there are no signs of where the offices, wash plant and tipple all stood. The only thing that remains is the concrete road that ran between the buildings. Really not much of a tour!
Just Concrete Drive left of New Black Diamond Coal Mine in 2020
But up in the woods behind this flat barren area is a bunch of remnants of the mine. My first adventure up there I found this flat open area and what is left of the trestle that carried the coal from the mine to the processing plant.
At the time I did not know much about the layout of this upper area nor was I dressed to plow through brush to get to the mine entrance location. Here is a link to that first article about the NBD aka Indian Coal Mine.
Indian Coal Mine – Big and Messy
Wow what two months can do for a researcher! I have since received so much more information from Renton History Museum, Black Diamond Museum and Palmer Coking Coal Company. Most of this came when I was looking for a photo of Ben Jones to see if he was in the picture below with Tom Jones.
Jones Brothers posing at their mine entrance at the 1925 Opening – Thanx Liz at Renton History Museum for sending better photo!
I have photos of both Tom & Ed but not Ben. So in that search folks would send me any info they had on the mine even if they could not answer the Ben vs Ed question. In the items that Bill K at Palmer sent me was a diagram explaining this back area of the mine complex. It mentioned that this plateau was for the coal car staging and repair. A car house was there towards the west side. Don’t think this is the small cement building that exists there today. It is too small and is on the east side.
Here is that map from the Mining Congress Journal of April 1929. Note the two red arrows. The left one is pointing to the Car House & the right one is pointing out the Mine Tunnel Entrance. All those rail lines from the Car House are where the upper area sits. Mystery solved on why that space was there.
New Black Diamond Coal Mine Complex on Maple Valley – Renton Hwy – ca. 1929 Mining Congress Journal
The stage is set now. Are you ready to travel with me to see what I found? Let’s GO!
Got to the plateau and stopped to get orientated by the old timbers from the end of the trestle to the processing plant.
Timbers rising in the woods mark the spot where the trestle stood decades ago.
Got my clippers out and started up to where I found the trail along the creek bed that had formed a small ravine.
There is a trail there! Just a bit overgrown and I have my trusty garden clippers.
I came across a plant I can’t clip due to it’s size. It is Devil’s Club & you do not want to touch or grab any part of this thing. It is all spines, thorns and even the leaves are pokey. I actually swept my hand against the leaf when I went by. YIKES, what this Coal Mine Hunter does to get to her pot of coal.
The Devil’s Club I had to dodge on the way to the NBD mine entrance
Want more on this Pacific Northwest Plant? Devils Club Batgurrl Post June 2017
Moving along I clipped my way thru the low bushes and came to a little area that looked down into the creek’s rocky gully. Above me was a steep hill that someone had made a trail down & came to where I stood.
I seriously contemplated my next move. It was going to be a bit of a climb to get into the creek washed out bed. I knew I could do that but would I be able to get out? This area is beyond the spot I stopped at the first time I was here. It was blocked by a big and I mean big log. Here is a photo of that moment months ago.
Large log blocked my progress in June and things looked really tough ahead
Then I decided it was now or never. That I would not come back and I was prepared no matter what happened. I would even climb over the damn log below if I had to get out that way instead of re-tracing my trail in.
This was the way forward – wish me luck
Up the creek bed I went breaking old snag branches, clipping salmonberry bushes and negotiating the rough rock rubble.
Along the way I found this metal trim piece. Kind of reminded me of the stuff I found on the face of the Jones Slope Hoist Foundation I found.
Metal in the rocks. Was this mine debris or something washed down from the hill above us?
Then I was there!! It was the end of the rock washed out ravine blocked by a pile of old logs and dirt. I was finding non-natural items too.
Before I reveal what it looks like and show you the video here are some of the things I found. (you can skip this & go straight to the video if you can’t wait)
Let us start with the concrete chunks. Before I got to this point I was only seeing river rock but here there was quite a bit of cement.
This piece was up next to the log pile
Another big chunk of cement with my trekking pole for size reference
Concrete & my trekking pole
Before I got to the end of the trail I saw this piece of rebar.
Rebar with my toe on the right for reference (plus my staff)
Next we have cut timber pieces and a piece of asphalt. I was suspicious of the asphalt being from the mine. I researched the history of asphalt figuring it was a recently developed for paving roads. I was wrong. It has been around a long time. Here is a little quote from NAPA – National Asphalt Pavement Association.
In 1870, a Belgian chemist named Edmund J. DeSmedt laid the first true asphalt pavement in this country, a sand mix in front of the City Hall in Newark, New Jersey. DeSmedt’s design was patterned after a natural asphalt pavement placed on a French highway in 1852.
Asphalt chunk and hunk of big cut timber
Like I have mentioned before the State of Washington made sure that the urban coal mines are all closed. And when I mean closed they are buried or blown closed with explosives. This one is no exception and protects all of us mine hunters from ourselves. I have found a group online that do go into these old mines. They have more balls than Batgirl!!
Here is what I found…..
This is the mine entrance or where it is behind dirt, rock and logs.
Here is a view looking back the way I had come up the creek bed.
With my back to the mine entrance this is what I had climbed up and through.
See the wood debris and other man made items? I saw this bag and blue cloth thinking homeless had camped here but a better explanation is it was washed down when the heavy rains hit this winter.
Items washed down the mountain by the rain storms of winter
Behind this is a clay/sand bluff that is one of the clues to this being it.
Bluff to the left of the log pile that covers the mine entrance
And a close up of the materials used to close this mine tunnel.
It is just a pile of big ass old logs that keep even the diggers out.
youtube
Now that you have seen the photos and video I want you to look at the opening day photo. See how the hill rises steeply behind the entrance? I also note that the little buildings on either side photo below were probably on the banks of the creek washout ravine. Those banks were about 2-4 feet high. Water has done a number on the terrain along with the work done to close the mine.
1925 photo of New Black Diamond Coal Mine aka Indian Coal Mine.
This is the eighth article on the New Black Diamond Coal Mine. What a ride with so much information. I also want to thank those that helped me along the way -> Liz Stewart of Renton History Museum, Ken Jensen of Black Diamond Museum and Bill Kombol of Palmer Coking Coal Company.
I am going to move on to the next coal mine hunting adventure. It is not far from the NBD, just around a bend in the Cedar River and up on Cedar Mountain east of the Jones Slope Complex.
If you want to read more about my search for lost coal mines here is a link to my directory of articles.
Shoot me any questions or better yet any information you have to add. This is a never ending deep dig into 100 year old coal mine history.
Remember Times are a changing. Blink and all will be changed.

Joe’s Weather World: Biggest weather events of the decade (WED-1/1)
Happy New Year…this blog is actually more or less being filled with information from the NWS in Pleasant Hill…yesterday they sent out a series of tweets regarding what they thought were the biggest weather events of the decade. I have to admit I forgot a few of these but I’m sure the ones that were affected certainly did not.
As far as our next weather-maker goes…it’s not going to do much for us aside from perhaps a few light showers or snow showers on Friday night…the weekend looks good…seasonable on Saturday and back to near 50° on Sunday.
Forecast:
Today: Sunny and mild…windy too. Gusts to 35 MPH with highs in the mid to upper 50s
Tonight: Fair skies and cool with lows in the 30s
Tomorrow: Increasing clouds and mild with highs well into the 40s
Friday: Perhaps a few showers then variable clouds and seasonable with highs near 40°
Discussion:
So I really don’t want to dive too much into this thing on Friday…it’s sort of a convoluted mess that won’t end up producing too much for us really.
I do find it interesting that an upper level storm will dig into MO later Friday…and there might be a few snow showers with that but odds favor more towards the MO side east of KC.
Whatever…
Yesterday the NWS in Pleasant Hill came out with some bigger weather events in the decade. These are in no particular order.
As the decade comes to a close we will highlight the 5 biggest weather events to impact this region since 2010.
First up, February 1, 2011 Blizzard
This system brought nearly a foot of snow to the Kansas City metro, and almost 2 feet of snow to portions of central Missouri. pic.twitter.com/SjEpJ8tOQK
— NWS Kansas City (@NWSKansasCity) December 31, 2019
I remember this snowstorm…there were thundersnows with it (as a matter of fact I think that winter every significant snow was accompanied by the thundersnow phenomena). It really came down, I 70 was closed in parts of MO and that snow extreme towards the SE of KC…into Pettis county was legit too!
Up next for the weather events of the decade:
In 2011 and again in 2019 active seasonal patterns across the Northern Plains caused near-record rises along the Missouri River.
These events caused widespread damage to local highways and in some cases destroyed entire cities. pic.twitter.com/xHknRsXmaB
— NWS Kansas City (@NWSKansasCity) December 31, 2019
I hate flooding…that is no secret…it’s often a slow drawn out affair that is somewhat tough to cover/explain with details…because it just keeps going. For the folks directly affected…it’s horrendous. Often the slow creep of water upwards with little to nothing that can be done. Then there is the aftermath…with polluted areas…unusable land…crops ruined…just a mess. It affects more people than other violent weather and it seems to be never-ending. This year in particular from a never ending standpoint. Sometimes what happens in other parts of the Plains influences what happens here with higher flood waters because of drainage.
Like I said…I hate flooding.
Continuing the local weather events of the decade:
Just a few days after the Joplin Tornado another strong storm system produced several tornadoes in the KC metro and central Missouri.
One of these tornadoes, an EF-2 heavily damaged ~100 buildings on the SE side of Sedalia. pic.twitter.com/cFcb6KOB2G
— NWS Kansas City (@NWSKansasCity) January 1, 2020
2011 was a nasty year for severe weather. It seems as if Pettis County is a tornado magnet too…along with Johnson Co on the MO side.
I’m not sure why this event slipped from my memory but seeing the information brought it all back.
The worst tornado outbreak this area has experienced since 2006 occurred on the evening of March 6, 2017.
At least 12 tornadoes were confirmed that night, the worst of which were the Smithville Lake EF-2 and Oak Grove EF-3 tornadoes. pic.twitter.com/X9BBKUSIJF
— NWS Kansas City (@NWSKansasCity) January 1, 2020
That was the real deal for the Oak Grove area…and I always felt the Smithville Lake event was somewhat lost in the shuffle of what happened towards Oak grove. This occurred at night as well…and with it being so early in the season…a lot of folks perhaps weren’t in that frame of mind…
On May 28, 2019 an EF-4 tornado, the strongest to impact the region since 2003 struck the city of Linwood, Kansas.
The tornado dissipated before reaching heavily populated areas of the Kansas City metro, but formed another tornado near Kearney, Missouri causing EF-2 damage. pic.twitter.com/K5fAtNWa11
— NWS Kansas City (@NWSKansasCity) January 1, 2020
This for obvious reasons…biggest/strongest tornado since the “biggie” back in 2003 in roughly the same area…in 2003 Wyandotte/Platte Co took the hardest hit with a nod to Clay Co as well. This time it was Douglas>Leavenworth region. Platte Co was spared and they are very lucky the supercell was cycling when it went though Platte/Wyandotte area.
Finally…
As a honorable mention to the storms of the decade:
Just over one-half of the yearly normal rainfall in 2012 resulted in extreme drought for the entire region.
Aside from the dry conditions the Kansas City reached 100 degrees twenty times that year. pic.twitter.com/ouc4fB29mZ
— NWS Kansas City (@NWSKansasCity) January 1, 2020
I’m not sure I would do an honorable mention on this one…it should be higher up really. It was nasty and the days of 100s were significant. We had baked out the ground so much that we were getting almost desert like humidity levels/dew points. That allowed overnight lows to drop moreso that IF we would’ve had muggier air. Temperatures at night dropped often to the mid>upper 60s. That allowed the city to “cool off” a bit and kept the death toll very low compared to IF the city wouldn’t drop below 80° which is more typical of heat here in the Plains.
Then the drought was broken by the remnants of a hurricane over Labor Day weekend…2-8″ of slow soaking rain fell for a few days…
So there you have it…looking back to 2010-2019.
Finally before we really start the New Year…a look back at 2019 from Meteorologist Michelle Bogowith. I’ll have a podcast with her posted by Friday as we go through some of this…
How about this shot to kick off the new year…via Gary Lundstrom out in Sedalia, MO

lexajade said: “4 or 5″
@lexajade sorry it’s so short. I really didn’t know where I was going with this (and it shows lol)
Roughly 800 words
A middle-aged man wearing a cowboy hat adjusted the brim to better block the sun out of his eyes. “I’m too sober for this.” He spat his tobacco out on a nearby rock while he pulled a flask out of his front pocket. He took a swig and stared off into the distance, as if trying to figure something out.
“It’s ten in the morning.” The man beside him furrowed his brow, looking down at the beat up wind up pocket watch in his hand. “Ain’t it a little early? He clicked it shut and stuffed it away once more...
“You really think I care, kid?” The older man let out a gravely, cough of a laugh. “I ain’t here for the hell of it.”
“Then why are you here?” His partner, a much younger man, sighed. His face was stained with dust and grime, all from the long ride through the Badlands. “If you’re not going to take this seri-”
The old man scoffed. He took another swig and adjusted the aviators on his face, sitting them square on a once-broken nose. They were old and cracked nearly as much as he was. But they did their job. “This is an in and out ‘rdeal. We rob the caravan and take to sellin’ the loot for profit. That’s all.” He capped the flask and tucked it back in his jacket once more.
“Okay, Mack, hear me out... Maybe you could look into gettin’ a new pair of shades.” The younger one leaned back on the rock, not as shy about the sun. He tilted his hat back and used it to cushion his head against the hard surface.
Mack pulled out a map from his other pocket and unfolded it. The paper was distressed and worn; nearly falling apart from all the use. “I don’ see a problem with them, Dainel.” He clicked his tongue and returned the glasses back to their rightful place on his nose again. “They work jus’ fine.”
“Whoever you say, Mack.” Daniel closed his eyes. He didn’t get much sleep the night before, and since they weren’t doing much now, no better time than to catch up. “Wake me when they’re here.”
“Maybe.” Mack looked over at the boy beside him. It was his own son, it was plain to see. The boy looked just like him when he was younger... He just didn’t know it. And if Mack had a say in it, he never would.
He just wished his boy would have taken up a better hobby instead of highway robbery.
“They’re a’comin’ this way.” Mack kicked Daniel with the side of his boot as he stood up. “Git yer ass up. It’s time to make a move.” He cinched the bandana around the back of his head and slid down the side of the hill they’d climbed.
But the boy didn’t move.
“Daniel!” He lowered the bandana and climbed back up. A red blotch on the ground wasn’t the normal red clay. It was wet and tacky against Mack’s fingered glove.
“My son...” He muttered out. He knew his hearing was going in his old age, but he couldn’t miss a bullet.
Not unless it was long-range. He reached for his gun, on the ready to kill the man that took his son from him. His hearing might have been gone, but his eyes were as good as ever.
“I’d stop right there.” Mack didn’t have to turn around to know who was behind him. He felt the custom barrel of the shotgun pressing into his back. “This is the end of the line for you, Mack.”
“Always knew you’d be the one to kill me, Annabelle.” Mack stood up and turned to the grey haired woman.
Annabelle Mayweather had her long wirey hair braided onto one side of her head. Numerous strands splayed to and fro, making her look a little crazier than she really was. She was completely decked out head to toe in militia attire, which remained the only semblance of law in the Badlands.
She didn’t lower her gun, she just glared at the man in front of her. She saw him go for his gun, but she shot first, letting his body fall beside the boy.
“Why’d you kill my boy?” He gasped out through clouded vision. “Why’d you kill our son, Annabelle?”
“I’m not here to make friends, Mack.” She spat out his name. “You were wanted in the next three counties. I didn’t kill my son, you bastard. You did when you took him under your wing. You sealed his fate.” She bared her teeth at him, taking everything in herself not to shoot him again as she took his gun from him and the pistol Daniel carried. “I didn’t shoot him Mack. You’ve got a sniper on you.”
She turned to go, walking back down the incline, and leaving the past behind her for good this time.

The Malibu House That Was Prepared for One of the State’s Worst Wildfires
Joe Schmelzer for The Wall Street Journal
On the morning of Nov. 9, Phillip Vogt got a phone call. The person on the other end said he wouldn’t be able to make their appointment at Mr. Vogt’s home because the roads leading there were blocked by California Highway Patrol. It was then that Mr. Vogt looked out his window: The hillsides surrounding his home had been consumed by a wildfire moving at breakneck speed.
It took Mr. Vogt 15 minutes to pack a few belongings into his white Prius, but by then it was too late. Nearby homes were ablaze. “There was no way of escaping,” he said. For a time he used a hose to extinguish the burning embers raining down, but he was eventually overtaken by flames that disintegrated a section of the hose and burned his hand, arm and eyes.
Mr. Vogt retreated to his house, surrounded by what would later be named the Woolsey Fire, one of the worst wildfires ever to break out in California. He lost cell service; his wife, who was at her parents, had a “complete breakdown.”
“I relived our wedding on the property, the good times, the tough times, what he was going through and what I would find after returning,” she said.
Living there is ‘somewhat depressing,’ said Mr. Vogt, adding that he still has nightmares.
Joe Schmelzer for The Wall Street Journal
The next day, Mr. Vogt emerged with minor burns. His house—the only home in the Malibu neighborhood left standing—sustained a little smoke damage. In addition to amenities like an ocean view and wine library, the five-bedroom, Spanish-style house was built with every feasible fire-safe feature Mr. Vogt could think of, including concrete-and-steel walls, rooftop ember guards and heat-resistant windows. The hose he had used in the fire is 1,000 feet long, supplied by tanks holding 50,000 gallons of water.
“It’s your home,” said Mr. Vogt, a 43-year-old commercial design and construction manager. “You don’t want to leave anything to chance.”
Mr. Vogt stands at the vanguard of a movement toward making homes more fire safe in the West’s increasingly combustible wild lands. A triple whammy of rising temperatures, overgrown forests and rampant development in wooded areas has created what local officials call an unprecedented fire threat to communities. Last November, the Woolsey Fire combined with the Camp Fire in the northern part of the state destroyed about 20,000 homes and other structures at a cost of between $15 billion to $19 billion, according to data provider CoreLogic.
The dramatic increase in big fires—15 of the 20 most destructive on record in California have occurred since 2000—has prompted calls by state and federal officials to increase thinning of forest areas. It has also triggered action to address another factor behind the growing property damage: the vulnerability of homes themselves, such as by being situated too close to vegetation and by being constructed from too many flammable materials like wood.
In the immediate aftermath of the fires, Mr. Vogt’s home was surrounded by dark ash. ‘Many years of natural growth destroyed within hours,’ he said.
Joe Schmelzer for The Wall Street Journal
Over the past 20 years, communities and counties have adopted voluntary building guidelines for new homes to make them more fire resistant, while they have been mandated in certain other places like Deschutes County, Ore. and statewide in Washington and California. Among other things, the California building measures adopted in 2007 require new homes in high-fire areas to be equipped with guards or other protection over rooftop openings to resist blowing embers—one of the biggest threats to structures in a wildfire.
Some places go beyond those requirements. In north San Diego County, the Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District has adopted requirements above the state fire code that includes more fire-resistant landscaping and construction materials. The district conducts weed-abatement inspections to make sure vegetation is trimmed back from structures and roadways, said Marlene Donner, fire marshal in a district of 33,000 people. The district, like many others, pushes for no vegetation within 5 feet of a home and 50 feet to 100 feet of so-called “defensible” space around it.
The measures paid off: A 2014 wildfire swept through and threatened 50 homes, but none was lost, she said.
‘I built for the worst-case scenario, but I had no idea that it would be tested so soon,’ said Mr. Vogt, who has a wife and two children.
Joe Schmelzer for The Wall Street Journal
Mr. Vogt’s home is in a rural section of Malibu, near where his wife works and where his children go to school.
Joe Schmelzer for The Wall Street Journal
The most important part of fireproofing is the home itself. “The home is the target—you do not want your house to catch on fire,” said Marti Witter, a fire ecologist with the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, which abuts Mr. Vogt’s property.
Mr. Vogt’s two-story home is in a rural section of Malibu, near where his wife works and where his two children go to school. Among other reasons he and his wife fell in love with the property was its seclusion and vantage point overlooking the Pacific. In his research before buying the property, Mr. Vogt learned that it was in one of the most fire-prone areas of Southern California—atop a ridge in mountains choked with flammable chaparral.
A native Californian, Mr. Vogt said he has long been interested in being less reliant on local utility companies and governmental agencies during an emergency. He said that is why he considered it a “must” to employ fireproof techniques. “I think friends and family thought I was more or less planning for the zombie apocalypse,” he said.
He designed the Spanish-style roof with fire-retardant materials. Thickened roof sheeting is covered by a fire-rated underlayment, which doesn’t allow burning embers to penetrate. That is then covered by two-piece clay tile that has concrete in-between, which helps secure the tiles from high winds and helps further prevent burning embers from entering.
Mr. Vogt used a high performance stucco as an extra barrier around the walls and, wherever possible, replaced wood with nonflammable materials. For example, he used fibrous cement board instead of wood for the eaves.
The fire safe features included concrete-and-steel walls, rooftop ember guards, heat resistant windows and a 1,000-foot-long hose supplied by these tanks, which along with others on the property hold 50,000 gallons of water.
Joe Schmelzer for The Wall Street Journal
As an added safeguard, Mr. Vogt stockpiled 50,000 gallons of water on the property, with pumps powered by a solar, battery and liquid-gas power system so they, like other devices, would continue running when the rest of the power goes out. Construction was completed in the fourth quarter of 2018; he was still working on finishing touches like landscaping when the Woolsey Fire hit.
In all, Mr. Vogt figures the added fire and other safety measures increased the $3 million in construction costs of his home by about 20%. Before the fire, the home was valued at over $5 million, according to Mr. Vogt’s bank appraiser. A study released in November by Headwaters Economics and the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety found that adding fire resistance added negligible cost differences to the building of a smaller, three-bedroom home.
Some scars from the fire remain. Mr. Vogt assumes his property values have fallen, particularly as it will take years for the vegetation to return to what it once was.Mohamed Hassan, managing broker with Viceroy Realty in Woodland Hills, Calif., said values often fall after a fire, partly due to traumatized residents wanting to leave.
‘You think you do everything right,’ Mr. Vogt said, ‘but you don’t know until you actually go through it. You don’t know.’
Joe Schmelzer for The Wall Street Journal
What were once acres of tall trees have been replaced by an eerie, lunar-like landscape. Living in the home is “somewhat depressing.” Mr. Vogt said. “This many months later, I’m still having nightmares.” While neighbors who lost their homes haven’t said anything to Mr. Vogt, “I feel a little guilty when I drive to and from our property.”
In the end, though, Mr. Vogt can be thankful. Despite all of his preparations, he wasn’t sure how the home would hold up.
“You think you do everything right,” he said, “but you don’t know until you actually go through it. You don’t know.”

Common Causes of Accidents in Clay City Illinois
Auto accidents happen in many ways and a wide range of circumstances. Some involve drivers who are angry, fatigued, or under the influence of drugs or alcohol, while others result from lack of focus – even for a split second – and other avoidable mental mistakes associated with distraction. At Agruss Law Firm, LLC, we have helped thousands of victims of auto accidents to see justice served and be compensated for their injuries and losses, and some common causes of these accidents include:
Aggression – The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that auto accidents involving aggressive driving result in over 11,000 fatalities per year.
Distracted driving – In 2015, the NHTSA estimated that auto accidents involving distractions – especially cell phone use – resulted in over 391,000 injury cases and 3,477 fatalities.
Fatigue – AAA estimated that fatigued driving was a factor in 21% of all fatal auto accidents in 2014.
Inexperienced drivers – Teenage drivers have consistently higher accident-rates than other age groups, and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that drivers between 16 and 19 years of age are up to three times more likely to die in an auto accident than drivers above 20 years of age.
Intoxicated driving – Alcohol was a factor in about 40% of all fatal traffic accidents in 2014, according to the NHTSA, and a survey from the National Institute on Drug Abuse found that over 10 million people have admitted to driving under the influence of an illegal drug.
Speeding – Speeding was a factor in about 28% of all fatal traffic accidents in 2014, according to the NHTSA.
Auto Accident FAQ
What should I do after an auto accident?
What is my timeframe for filing a lawsuit?
Am I required to have auto insurance in Illinois?
What are the costs of hiring an attorney?
Can I be compensated for lost wages?
Types of Auto Accidents in Clay City Illinois
To be compensated for your injuries and losses, it must be established that the other driver was negligent and that this negligence directly caused the accident. This can be straightforward or rather complicated depending on the circumstances of the accident. Common types of auto accidents include:
Head-on collisions – When the fronts of two vehicles collide, such as when a driver veers into the oncoming lane or misjudges a turn.
Hit-and-runs – When a driver strikes a pedestrian or another vehicle and immediately leaves the scene of the accident.
Intersection accidents – These occur in a variety of ways and often involve traffic law violations or improper turns.
Left-turn accidents – These occur when a driver attempting to turn left collides with a vehicle in the oncoming lane, and either the turning driver or oncoming driver may be liable for the accident depending on certain circumstances.
Rear-end accidents – When the front of a vehicle collides with the rear of another vehicle, which can be caused by multiple forms of negligence, such as distracted, fatigued, or intoxicated driving.
Road construction accidents – When an accident is caused in full or in part by obstructions in construction zones, such as debris or improperly-placed cones or markers.
Rollovers – When a driver loses control and the vehicle “rolls over”, meaning to flip upside-down and sometimes back again.
Sideswipes – When the side of a vehicle strikes the side of another vehicle, which has a variety of causes and is more common in high-traffic areas and at busy intersections.
Vehicle-defect accidents – Accidents resulting from a vehicle’s defective design or manufacture, and these may result in a product liability claim against the manufacturer.
Common Injuries in Clay City Auto Accidents
In 2014 alone, over 84,000 people in Illinois were injured in auto accidents (according to the Illinois Department of Transportation), and over 11,700 suffered a “significant injury” which prevented them from resuming their daily activities from before the accident; these are categorized as “A” injury accidents. Injuries sustained in auto accidents can vary greatly, and here are some of the most common significant injuries:
Amputation of limbs
Back/neck injuries
Bone fractures
Brain injuries
Burns
Joint injuries
Paralysis
Applicable Laws for Clay City Illinois Auto Accidents
There are numerous laws which may apply to you based on the circumstances of your accident, and one of the most important is Illinois’s statute of limitations (735 ILCS 5/13-202), which states that your personal injury claim must be filed within two (2) years of the date of the accident or you will be permanently barred from filing for that accident.
The legal responsibilities of Illinois drivers are outlined in the Illinois Motor Vehicle Code 625 ILCC 5, and Chapter 11 in particular addresses the regularly-updated “Rules of the Road.” Also, remember that Illinois uses a system of “modified comparative fault” for auto accidents, meaning that your compensation for an accident may be reduced by your percentage of fault for that accident, such as recovering 80% of your compensation for an accident which was deemed 20% your fault.
Understanding Insurance Companies
Whether or not this is your first time pursuing a personal injury claim for an accident, there are some important things about insurance companies to keep in mind. First, the insurance companies are NOT on your side; their constant goal, day-in and day-out, is to pay out as little as possible for injury claims or deny them entirely. They make their money both from what is saved on injury claim payouts and what is gained from premiums, so they have a vested interest in keeping your settlement low, all in the name of profit.
Each and every personal injury claim is at risk of marginalization or outright dismissal, and insurance companies are well-prepared with attorneys and adjusters of their own who understand and serve the insurer’s bottom line. This is why the assistance of an experienced attorney is essential to ensure that you are fully compensated for your injuries and losses: those who negotiate alone have slim chances of full compensation, and once a settlement offer is accepted, you can never file another claim or earn more compensation for the same accident.
Those who negotiate alone are often tempted to take the very first settlement-offer from the insurance company, especially when it seems like a high amount at first glance, and this is dangerous for a second reason: not only does accepting an offer close the claim for good but if it is a lowballed (deliberately low and insufficient) amount, it may not cover all your losses and expenses, especially possible future medical expenses if your injuries result in any long-term complications.
Personal injury attorneys understand that some injuries may produce lingering symptoms, result in lasting complications, or require long-term medical care, and these are important factors which are taken into account for your case. Remember, the insurance company wants to pay out as little as possible for your claim, if not deny it outright, and having an experienced attorney on your side ensures that your rights are protected and you can receive full compensation for your losses, including lost wages, medical expenses, and pain and suffering.
Compensation after an Accident
If you’ve been injured in an accident due to another’s negligence, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries and losses by filing a personal injury claim. Studies have found that the average settlement is three times higher for those who are represented by an attorney than for those who negotiate alone, so contact Agruss Law Firm, LLC today for a free consultation.
Although every case is different and depends on unique circumstances, here are some common forms of compensation for victims of an accident:
Medical expenses – These may include both immediate and future expenses for care such as ambulance transport, doctors’ visits, emergency room/hospital care, medications, physical therapy, and surgery.
Lost wages – You may be eligible to recover both past and future wages (and related benefits) which you could not and will not earn due to your injury.
Property damage – This refers to the damage done to your vehicle in the accident, as well as damage to any personal belongings within the vehicle.
Disfigurement/disability – If an accident-victim is left with scarring or other visible injuries (disfigurement) or cannot attend to previous activities due to a disability, a claim for either may be presented.
Wrongful death – The Illinois Wrongful Death Act allows the family of the deceased victim of an accident to be compensated for funeral expenses, lost financial support, and loss of consortium/companionship.
Pain and suffering/emotional distress – These are “non-economic” categories of compensation for the physical and/or emotional pain and distress experienced by the victim of the accident. In jury trials, compensation for pain and suffering may depend on the testimony of the plaintiff and his/her physicians.
Punitive damages – In cases in which the at-fault party was extremely reckless, such as drunk driving cases, the judge may allow the pursuit of “punitive damages” which are intended to punish the at-fault party.
Preparing for Every Case
Most personal injury claims are settled out-of-court with the insurance company before a trial by jury is necessary. However, we thoroughly prepare each case for the possibility of a trial and our invested time and resources consistently result in larger settlements for our clients.
Here are some of the steps we take in the investigation and prosecution of personal injury claims for auto accidents:

Creighton chapter 17
“The label is going to shift the entire record around after you turn this bad boy in. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the first single.”
His words fill my chest with warmth, and I pick up my guitar and flip a page in my notebook. The rest of these are going to bare my soul just as much, so I might as well get through them and make them as good as they can possibly be. This is more than my career, this is my passion, and I’m blessed to have this chance—and lucky to have Vale’s time.
“You ready to hear the next one?”
“Lay it on me, girl.”
I begin to play, and the smile on his face grows. By the time I finish, he’s rubbing his hands together.
“Okay, a few tweaks to the chorus, a rework of the bridge, and I think this one is going to be fucking awesome too.”
I reach for my pen. “Let’s do it.”
Vale packs up his guitar and leaves the bus at a quarter to twelve. We shake hands, and I feel like he’s seeing me as a professional now, which is validation I didn’t realize I wanted from him. I’m not just the naive girl who stepped off the stage of Country Dreams; I’m a rising talent in the world of country music, on both the songwriting and performing fronts.
With that confidence bolstering me, I tinker with the songs some more until the clock reads 12:20. Still no sign of Justin.
My confidence in Justin and not being an afterthought takes a blow, however. He’s still gone, and he hasn’t called. I’m interrupted from the slow slide into the pit of doubt by my buzzing cell phone—the one that arrived that arrived yesterday via express mail. Inside the box was a note from Tana.
Don’t you dare let your focus slip from that tour to your husband’s fine ass. This is your future, girl. Love ya, T.
Even long distance, she’s still dispensing her brand of wisdom, and it was a good reminder.
My phone buzzes again, and I finally look down. I don’t recognize the number, and normally I’d let it go to voice mail, but right now, I’ll take any distraction I can get.
“Hello?”
“Will you accept a collect call from the Clay County Jail?” a computerized voice asks.
What the hell? I haven’t gotten a call from jail in a long time. Not since the year before I moved in with Gran, and Mama was thrown out of a bar for fighting over her latest in a long string of men.
I should hang up, but my curiosity and need for avoidance spur me to respond, “Yes, I’ll accept the charges.”
The voice that comes next sucks me right back into the past.
“Hey, baby. Mama missed you.”
After the fifteenth in-person interview is complete, I finally have two competent security professionals assigned to Selena. The security contractor didn’t object to me doing the interviews, but he did object to me bringing in someone who wasn’t on his team.
“We can’t vouch for him, and if something goes down, we won’t be taking responsibility for it.”
“I can vouch for him,” I say, looking over my shoulder at the brick shithouse who barred me from getting backstage in San Antonio.
His name was easy to get, and his background check showed he was a three-tour Army combat vet formerly of the First Infantry Division.
The man proved his character to me when he turned down my money, but I never would have considered letting him near Selena without a clean background check and a personal interview. He was late coming in from San Antonio, and now I’m running late for lunch with Selena.
A check of my watch shows I’m running really fucking late. As in, if I make it back to the bus in ten minutes, I’ll be just in time to tag along to the radio spot.
Glancing at my two new hires, I wave my hand toward the Escalade. “Load up. Your new job starts now.”
When we arrive back at the bus, it’s empty. Chaz, the driver, is smoking a cigarette and shooting the shit with the crew. According to him, Selena left only a few minutes earlier.
We pile back into the Escalade and head for the highway, which is closed. For a goddamn presidential visit.
“Fuck!” I slam my fist against the dash.
“Sorry to say it, boss, but we ain’t gonna make it on time. This ain’t my hood, so I don’t know the back roads like I would if we were in SA.”
Earlier, I handed off the keys to Marcus, aka the brick shithouse. Ironically, he wasn’t trained in evasive driving maneuvers like the other guy I hired, but considering he dodged roadside bombs in a Humvee, I feel pretty comfortable with him behind the wheel. It would remain to be seen who would be driving Selena around when I wasn’t with her.
I scrub a hand over my face.
“Yeah. I know. Shit. By the time traffic clears, she’ll probably already be on her way to the venue.” I glance from Marcus to the guy in the rear of the SUV. “Let’s head back, and I’ll introduce you to her crew first, and then Selena. She might balk, but regardless of what she says, you stick to the plan. You report to me, not her.”
The man in the back nods wordlessly.
From the driver’s seat, I get an altogether different response. “You gonna be up shit creek for being late, boss?”
I think about how I left things with Selena.
“Then kiss me. Mark me. Let him know that I’m absolutely and completely out of his reach because I belong to you.”
I’m not sure I’ll ever forget her words. They’re etched on my brain and have reverberated ever since she spoke them.
When I started down this road, I couldn’t have envisioned ending up in this position. And I’m not talking about the fact that I’m in an Escalade with two bodyguards driving down the side streets of Dallas. I’m talking about the fact that I’m caught up in this woman in a way that I’ve never been with another. It might have started out as purely physical, but I should have whiplash from how fast things have changed.
Leaving her alone with Vale went against all my possessive instincts, but I’m finding that I trust her, which is a new development for me. My last marriage, as short as it was, left me with a healthy distrust of women.
I met Shaw when I purchased a chain of luxury resorts off the auction block. It was founded by her grandfather and then run into the ground by her father before she could take control. She was ambitious, driven, and totally and completely pissed that her family legacy was circling the drain.
I tried to fire her, but she refused to leave, saying she’d work for free if I would just let her stay. I caved, and not only a little because her passion for the business was contagious. Shaw was an amazing leader of people. Charismatic, and also absolutely gorgeous.
I opted to take a personal role in the turnaround, and one thing led to another. We were a great team when it came to business, and more than compatible everywhere else. It made sense, or at least it did when Shaw pitched the idea to me like the skilled businesswoman she was. We were married within six months to the day I met her, and in a moment of generosity, I agreed in the prenup that she could keep the resorts if things didn’t work out.
Three months after the wedding, I realized that the resorts were all she really wanted out of the deal. This was the first and only time I met someone who was a cagier negotiator than I was.
She was in love with someone else the entire time, and viewed me as the quickest and easiest way to reclaim her family legacy. The only thing that kept me from being crazy bitter about the way she coldly ended it was that righteous bitch, karma.
Shaw didn’t end up with everything she wanted, because she lost the guy she truly loved. Apparently he wasn’t the type to swallow the idea of his woman marrying another man. I couldn’t blame the guy, and Shaw has since retreated into her hardnosed businesswoman persona, and the fun, playful side I caught glimpses of never emerged again, as far as I know.
Shortly after the divorce, I discovered that the problem with giving a woman a chain of resorts as a divorce settlement was the growing number of women eager to be the next ex-Mrs. Justin Karas. The line of them grew long and creative, and I didn’t trust a single one.
Marrying Selena was a great way to put a stop to the women desperate for my attention. I’m not proud that entered into my motivations, but I wasn’t going to apologize for anything that got me to this point with this woman.
“Boss?” Marcus prompts, dragging me back to the here and now. “Shit creek?”
“Honestly, I’m not entirely sure. I’m still figuring her out.”
A mix of a grunt and a chuckle comes from the other man in the car, Orrin Steel, a former SEAL who lost mobility in his left thumb and had to leave his team because of it. He opted to bow out of the Navy completely because he refused to ride a desk.
“You’ll be trying to figure her out for the rest of your goddamn life. Women are a mystery best left unsolved,” he adds.
Marcus erupts into laughter, and I’m still trying to decide if Selena’s going to be pissed. The unfamiliar feeling of anxiety creeps in when I recall how she left only a two-word note before she walked out of my New York penthouse.
“You’d better drive faster,” I say.
Selena climbs on the bus less than an hour after I return, but the initial feeling of relief I have at seeing her is wiped away when I take in the stooped set of her shoulders and pale face.
Flipping my laptop shut, I rise. “What’s wrong?”
She skirts around me and sinks into a chair.
“Just a long day,” she says, her tone defeated.
“Selena.” I only say her name, but it carries a wealth of meaning. I know she’s full of shit, and she knows I know she’s full of shit.
“How do you feel about having a meet-the-parents day?”
Her question catches me off guard, especially because her shot at meeting my parents died the day my mother and father were killed in an attack on the African village where they moved us for their missionary work. It was a story I worked incredibly hard to keep out of the media to this day.
“Excuse me?” I ask.
Her eyes flick up at me from beneath dark lashes, and she says, “My mother may be coming to visit.”
From what she’s said about her mother, this new development shocks the shit out of me.
“Really?”
“Yeah, but only because I couldn’t think fast enough to figure a way out of it.”
“Well, that’s honest.”
“It was the call from jail that threw me off my game.”
“Excuse me?” I repeat.
“If you weren’t sure before that you married white trash, you can rest assured that now you won’t have any doubt. My mama was arrested for breaking and entering into my gran’s house back home. Apparently the sheriff didn’t have my number, so when I called the police station, they filled me in.”
Selena’s voice is weary, and she won’t meet my eyes. “They wouldn’t have even arrested her, but my mama broke up the sheriff’s marriage before she left town by crowing about sleeping with him one night when she was drunk. His wife caught wind of it, and didn’t believe him when he swore he hadn’t. She left him, and he’s never forgiven my mama. He also knew, like everyone in town, that Gran left me everything, including the house. So she had no right to be there at all.”
“And that equates to her coming to visit, how?”
“I had to wire them money to bail her out of jail, and she has nowhere to go—that’s why she was breaking into Gran’s. When she asked to come here, I couldn’t find the word no fast enough in my brain. Don’t worry; she’ll last a day or two, hook up with some roadie—”
Selena sucks in a deep breath and continues in a shakier tone. “And then I won’t see her again until she runs out of the cash she’ll steal from me and anyone else who isn’t guarding their wallet. That’s what happened when she tracked me down at the very beginning of the tour.” Her voice breaks on the last word.
I cross the small living area of the bus, wrap her in my arms, and lift her into my lap as a few tears slip over her lids. I’m so shocked by the change from spitfire to hurt little girl that I have no idea how else to comfort her.
She leans against my shoulder for a beat before pulling back and climbing off my lap. She swipes at her eyes, smearing her mascara, and begins to pace.
“Damn it. I won’t cry over her. I’ve cried over her too many times. She doesn’t deserve any more of my tears. None.”
“I agree. No one deserves your tears.” Not even me, I add silently.
“And then there’s you,” she says.
“Me?” I ask.
Let’s pause for one second and acknowledge the fact that this is a stupid fucking question for a guy to ask a woman at this particular juncture, but it’s out of my mouth before I can call it back.
“Seriously? You stood me up. Again. And my mama, the gold digger, is coming to visit, and I’ll have her yapping in my ear about how I’ll never hold on to you unless I do something magical, like bleach my asshole or vajazzle my cooch, and even then, I’m probably not woman enough to keep a man like you.”
Fuck. Selena’s mother really did a number on her, and that woman will not find herself welcome here to continue the job. There’s no way in hell I’ll let her near Selena. I don’t give a fuck who she is.
“I didn’t expect it to take so long.”
She crosses her arms, and I’ve done enough negotiating to know that her body language says she’s closed off to any kind of reasonable interaction.
“What were you doing anyway?” she demands. When I open my mouth to respond, she holds up a hand, and I pause. “Never mind, you don’t need to tell me. It’s not like this is that kind of marriage anyway.”
The acid in her tone puts my back up. I know she’s pissed and emotional, but her taking swipes at what we’re starting to build here pisses me off.
“And exactly what kind of marriage is this, Selena?” The question is a loaded one.
“We both know it’s not going to last. I’m a passing fancy for you. And in case you’re wondering, I’m not bleaching my asshole to keep you on the hook.”
Her offbeat and slightly twisted sense of humor does the impossible; my pissed-off mood evaporates. I rise from the chair and move toward her, my predatory instincts taking over.
Pinning her to the fridge, I growl, “Not even if I ask nicely and promise to fuck that tight little asshole until you’ve come so many times your pleasure receptors are blown?”
She lifts her gaze to mine and mumbles, “I knew I shouldn’t have said that.”
I smooth the hair away from her face and lower my lips to her ear. “Don’t ever be afraid to say anything to me.”
When Selena doesn’t reply, I pull away and stare down at her. “Selena. Look at me.” I wait until she complies. “If you really believe what you said about this not lasting, then we have a serious problem.”
Her teeth scrape her bottom lip, and she hesitates before asking, “Why?”
I infuse my words with steel, because I want there to be no confusion about the gravity of what I’m saying. “Because there’s no way in hell I’m letting you go.”
Her big brown eyes blink twice, and her mouth falls open. The spitfire who faded away for brief moments flares to life again.
“Who the hell are you, and what have you done with my I’ll be waiting in a hotel suite with a prenup and an engagement ring husband?”
I cup her face with both hands, needing the contact. “Things change, Selena. And everything has changed for me because of you. If you haven’t figured that out yet, then I’ll just have to show you.”
“I don’t get you,” she whispers.
I lower my forehead to hers and breathe her in. “That’s where you’re wrong. You’ve already got me.”
She turns her head, breaking our contact. I drop my hands to my sides, and a shred of doubt filters into me, bringing a completely foreign feeling with it—uncertainty.
I consider crushing my lips to hers until her thoughts are filled with nothing and no one but me, but I also understand the value of backing off and letting her settle so I can return to claim victory another day. With the news of her mom’s arrest and upcoming arrival, not to mention the unrelenting tour schedule, I suspect Selena is teetering on the edge of her breaking point right now, and the last thing I want to do is push her over.
This isn’t about me. This is about her.
Deciding to change gears, I step away and nod toward the bus door.
“Want to meet your new security detail?” I ask.
“Security detail?”
“That’s where I was. Doing personal interviews and reviewing background checks. I needed to make sure that I felt comfortable with them before I could bring them around you. If you have any issues with either of the guys, let me know, and we can replace them. But having said that, I think they’re both solid choices.” I meet her eyes. “I’m willing to trust them with your safety, and believe me when I say that isn’t something I do lightly. At all.”
Her posture relaxes for a fraction of a second, but tenses once more when she asks, “You think they can keep Mama away from me too?”
“Don’t worry about her. I’ll handle that myself.”
The energy from tonight’s show is exactly what I need to shore up my inner reserves. The crowd was amazing, singing along and screaming. Maybe it’s a sign that I’m a vain person, but there’s really nothing like thousands of people chanting your name.
You’d think a girl from Gold Haven, Kentucky, who started off singing karaoke with the smell of fryer grease clinging to her hair and clothes wouldn’t feel perfectly comfortable on a stage in front of ten thousand people, but I do. It’s where I belong. Every time I get up there, it’s with the absolute certainty that this is what I was born to do.
But just thinking about the past reminds me that Mama is coming to visit, and regardless of what Justin says about taking care of her, she’s going to find a way to dig her hooks into me. I just don’t have thick enough armor when it comes to her. I want to call her back and tell her “hell no, I changed my mind,” but I don’t have any way to get in touch with her.
As I’m falling asleep on the bus, curled into Justin’s arms¸ the haze of orgasm steals my filter, and I tell him, “I wish I could turn back the clock and tell my mama to go somewhere else, anywhere else. I don’t want her here. I don’t want her messing with my life again. It never ends well.”
Justin squeezes me against his chest and presses a kiss to my hair. “Go to sleep. You’ve got another long day tomorrow in Biloxi.”
The vibrations from the road and Justin’s steady, even breathing lull me into a dreamless sleep.
The next afternoon, I pull out my phone and check the time for the twentieth time in the last five minutes. Not because I’m worried I’m going to miss the Biloxi meet and greet, but because I keep expecting Mama to come barreling backstage and wreaking havoc like a raccoon sneaking into a house through a chimney.
Justin shoots me a questioning look. “What are you doing? You’re not going to be late, so calm the hell down.”
I suck in a breath and release it slowly, trying to calm my nerves. “It’s not that. It’s Mama. I was hoping I’d get that out of the way early so I could get myself together for the show. I hate this feeling of being on edge.”
Justin’s expression goes blank. “Shit. I forgot to tell you. She’s taken care of.”
I swear, everything in me slams to a halt—my lungs, my heart, the very blood in my veins. “What? What are you talking about?”
“I arranged for her to take a vacation. All expenses paid to Miami. I own a large portion of a resort there, and I figured it would give you the break you need. It was easy enough to get her to agree.”
At his nonchalant announcement, I come unglued. “And you didn’t bother to mention it?” The question comes out as a screech.
He scrubs a hand through his hair, not meeting my eyes. “Fuck, Selena. We’ve been going nonstop today. It slipped my mind.”
“Damn it, Crey. I’ve been dreading this shit all day. You could’ve told me and put me out of my misery.”
I pace the room backstage as I rant. I know I’m overreacting, but Justin doesn’t understand my mama or the stress that comes along with just thinking about her. He watches me pace, letting me vent, which is probably a smart move on his part. Come near the clawing she-beast and you may lose an important appendage, and wouldn’t that be a shame?
After about twenty trips back and forth across the fifteen-foot-wide room, I’ve calmed down a smidge. I chance a look at where Justin is leaning against the wall, arms folded over his chest, wondering if he’s holding in a laugh for all he’s worth. As I stare for a minute, I realize he isn’t. But I also can’t read what he’s thinking.
“What?” I snap. Okay, so the she-beast isn’t totally pacified yet. I just need to channel the energy into my performance tonight. That I can do.
“You called me Crey,” he says.
I shake my head. “Is there something wrong with that?”
He nods slowly. “That’s what people close to me call me, but you never have before.”
I bite my lip and consider. “So?”
“Nothing. I was surprised, is all.” He waves a hand. “Feel free to continue the tirade.”
From anyone else it might sound patronizing, but Crey just seems to be letting me get it all out. Which is exactly what I need right now. And that realization right there is all it takes to calm me down.
“I’m all tiraded out,” I say, stopping in front of him.
“Then maybe this is a good time to ask you if you’re up for a flight back to New York after the show next Thursday. I know we haven’t really talked about how things are going to work after the tour is over, but I’ve got some things I need to take care of at home in person that I’ve been putting off, and I’d like to have you with me.”
I’ve been dreading the what’s next for us discussion, so my question is tentative. “You get that I don’t want to stay in New York permanently?”
Justin’s expression turns serious. “We’ll figure it out, Selena.”
“Okay. I’ll go.”
His smile is wide and genuine. “I’m glad I’m not going to have to kidnap you then. I really didn’t want to go to the gala alone.”
“Gala?”
“A charity thing. At MoMA.”
When I open my mouth to say that I’m not sure what MoMA is, he says, “Come here.”
I cross the room and stand before him, just out of reach. “We don’t have time for anything dirty right about now.”

Overland Park business owner gunned down; possible suspect found dead in Kearney
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — An Overland Park business owner was shot and killed outside his office Monday morning. Now, police are investigating if the potential shooter might’ve taken his own life.
“It was pretty scary to kind of see here in Kearney,” Emyla Baker said.
Baker came downstairs with her 7-month-old baby girl Monday afternoon to see police lights flashing from the back deck of her Kearney townhouse on 92 Highway near Porter Ridge Road.
“First thing I saw was a person in the driver side vehicle, didn’t look like bullet holes but just the like window had been probably to get inside the window was out,” Baker said.
Clay County deputies got a bulletin to look for a white Nissan SUV from Overland Park police. Investigators thought it might be linked to a murder that happened outside a Deer Creek office building at 135th and Lamar just after 8 a.m. Monday.
“Now that I’m figuring out what it was it’s pretty crazy,” Baker said.
Overland Park police say 59-year-old David Flick was getting out of his pickup truck, heading into work. He co-owned Terra Technologies, an environmental engineering firm.
“It seems as if he had stepped out of the vehicle and someone had shot him,” said John Lacy with Overland Park Police.
Several people were coming into work at other offices nearby and heard the gunfire. All of them were too shaken up to speak with FOX4.
About five hours later, and 45 miles away, Clay County deputies tailed a potential suspect and called for back-up from Kearney Police.
As they tried to pull over the white SUV, officers heard a single gunshot. They approached the vehicle, busted out the glass and found the driver dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot.
Baker said the ordeal was too close for comfort, but she’s grateful no one else was hurt.
“I’m very thankful. Looked like they had a ton of people out there, so I mean they obviously kept it secure and safe,” Baker said.
Missouri Highway Patrol also assisted in the Kearney investigation.
Police haven’t said if they’re still looking for any other suspects in all this. They’re running tests to connect the gun found in the SUV in Kearney to Monday morning’s murder in Overland Park.
Meanwhile, victim David Flick is being remembered as a dedicated businessman and loving father.
Anyone with information in the Overland Park homicide is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
If you are having suicidal thoughts, we urge you to get help immediately.
Go to a hospital, call 911 or call the National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433).
