In retrospect, there were signs.

Signs that they hadn’t paid attention to, true, but signs nonetheless - Ashley going suddenly very silent for example, Sam rolling her sleeves up and leaning in for another. Had anyone else been watching their little tournament, well, that’s probably when the warning klaxons would’ve started up, red flags waving this way and that, but the problem was no one else was watching, so there was no one to witness this subtle turning of the tides except for Josh and Chris.

Both of whom were, suffice it to say, prematurely celebrating their imminent victory.

“Losers still pay for pizza, right?” Chris grinned, leaning over to nudge Sam with his elbow...at just about the same time Ashley let fly a spiny shell and both his and Josh’s karts were knocked unceremoniously out of bounds.

“Losers definitely pay for the pizza,” Sam said with a slow-blooming smirk of her own, holding her hand out for a low-five Ashley gladly met, “Hope you boys brought your allowances, too, because that vegan sausage absolutely costs extra.”
