im not sure how i feel about the amateur video essay format taking the place of journalism and for some people, i think just actual nonfiction books. like i like video essays, but you guys are reading about those topics too, right?
#ive always felt this way a little but especially after that hbomb video im like should we trust anything on this website ever?#ironically i trust hbomb himself less after that video just because it made me kinda lose faith in the whole platform#just kinda reminded me that none of these people have any credentials at all#and the only reason they are youtubers is because they are performers#not because they have any expertise—they just like being in front of cameras#i actually was also thinking abt this because of what hannah witton has been doing recently#and hannah witton has a history degree but she talked a lot about all the sexology books she had to read#and the fact that she kinda started her channel before really gaining that expertise. she learned along the way#which is of course how all jobs work and i think hannah has always been good at hers#but my point is that hannah wasn't a sexologist who started a youtube channel#she was a youtuber who decided to study sexology#and thinking about it in that way really makes me wanna scrutinize everything people post on youtube#i like that hannah is extremely open about what degree she has and what other qualifications she actually has#and acknowledges the gaps in her knowledge and doesn't position her opinion as expertise or present opinion as fact#which all sounds like basic shit but you can't expect it from youtubers which is just frustrating#i only have like 2 faves who even make shit this would apply to but my recommended feed is a travesty these days#bri babbles
