final day with ROTJ and TFA. comments and possible TLJ spoilers under the cut

every fan of the OT somehow dunks on ROTJ, but the ewoks, but the space battle is too short, but the ewoks beat the imperial forces, what a bunch of whiny brats. ROTJ is a tight film, you don’t even realise how quickly you get to the final third.

ROTJ is far better than i remembered and has a great three ways split action that keeps you on your toes. but our heroes are not invincible even without falling into the Emperor’s trap.

Luke fucks up his rescue of Han in the first minutes by almost becoming Rancor’s dinner. he then endangers the infiltration mission without a second thought - realizing it when it’s already too late - he then gets separated from Leia - i see what you did there George!! - and finally, almost gives into his hatred and betrays Leia to Vader.

Han is just as reckless but at least he has the best one liners.

Yoda instructs Luke to train new Jedi, and then he tells him there’s another Skywalker. Yoda wanted Leia trained. and then Jar Jar Abrams had the fucking GALL to ignore Leia’s Force capabilities!?! fuck you JJ Abrams.

the Emperor may have set his trap, but he didn’t account for selfless ewoks. show me any other species in SW that actually are important to the plot, besides the ones introduced in the OT. yes, maybe Ewoks look cute and cuddly, but they are flesh eaters, are quite savage and turn up being fundamental to the Rebellion succeeding in disabling the shield.

Luke gives into his anger and only chopping Vader’s hand off makes him relent. that and the Emperor’s cackling in the background. it’s funny that until their very last duel, it is always Luke who lights up his saber first, Vader only does it in response.

I guess Skywalkers bond over missing hands they chopped off each other LOL.

as promised, i timed Vader’s decision making and it takes him 1 minute 6 seconds from the second time the Emperor starts blasting Luke. that’s a long time in movie time tbh. it somehow felt longer though, i felt cheated that it turns out to be little over 1 minute.

now, seeing TFA right after embitters the whole ROTJ experience a bit. first of all, you mean to tell me that, with the galaxy wide celebrations of the Empire’s defeat, in only 20 years all of that would be drowned by the rise of First Order!??! you mean to tell me that Luke exiling himself resulted in the FO rising?! because that’s what the TFA scroll tells us.

however, my bro made a quick political observation, that 2 years ago, we had a decent government and president and we thought we were on the way to true democracy, and then in the next elections the bad guys won and now are passing awful laws and it’s almost worse than it’s ever been (not USA, another country LOL). the FO making things worse quick seems plausible in the context. (we also commented that post the destruction of the Empire in ROTJ, it followed a period of corruption, which, with the “guardian” of the peace gone, planted the seeds for the rise of the fascist FO. secondly, post the Empire being created, it followed a period of peace - under terror, but peace nonetheless. so which is best??! third of all, empire or republic, peace or guerilla war, it hardly matters for the commoner. on the outer rim systems nobody seemed to care about the Empire/Rebellion, Owen was more interested in having a productive farming season. all of this paints the SW power struggle universe as ridiculously small scaled).

and secondly, you mean to tell me that the most amazing best beautifulest deepest love between Leia & Han ends!??! they are apart over a mistake!? like i was thinking, there’s something rotten with Ben Solo’s upbringing, because Han and Leia discuss in TFA and it seems that it was her decision to send him to train - against Han’s wishes (surely best not to be able to channel your immense power if it’s the dark side that’s powering it) and sending Ben away (dialog in TFA aka training with Luke) drove the final rift between the couple. ugh. so Han left Leia - he was weak and cowardly like Ben/Kylo accuses him and then Luke did the deed and Kylo Ren was born....still something is fishy. Han & Leia’s love MO was fights and bickering. why would that cause rift after rift!? goddam it.

especially that it is mentioned that Snoke seduced Ben, but how? even the Emperor had actual contact with little and then growing Anakin and influenced him little by little...what kind of access would Snoke have!??!

Han and Leia’s interaction in TFA is so forced and weird. dialog on the par with, god forgive me for the comparison i am about to make, Padme & Anakin in AOTC :|

finally, i understood the Force vision Rey has. it is the very Force inside her awakening. the vision is not even triggered by touching Luke’s saber, but by Finn leaving her. hearing her young self’s cries, she stumbles down those stairs, etc, and when she touches the saber, she sees the past - the Bespin corridors (someone correct me, i think that’s what those where) where Luke first confronted Vader and learned a painful truth about himself, then the night Kylo Ren destroyed the Jedi temple and finally, the future - her 30 mins in the future fight in the snow with said Kylo Ren - in her vision still with the mask, because the future always unclear is. the voices she hears, Obi Wan’s, Yoda’s, are about the present - here, now, witnessing the vision, she is taking her first steps. the mystery is solved. i used to think she had gotten some training, and had been sent away after the Kylo Ren slaughter - being left behind by “parents” leaving in a spaceship sure more than suggested that, but the context of the whole vision, especially of the future that we would get to see in the very same movie matters more. so, Rey is Rey, she’s her own person and now in TLJ, she’s ready to leave her patiently waiting persona - together with the childhood hairdo - behind, because 1. Finn comes back for her in TFA, so she now has a family and 2. she’s learned that it’s who she is and who she can become that matters in TLJ. keeping her hairdo was obviously a way to be found, but now she knows she doesn’t have to.

then, after they fight for a while, Rey resisting but barely, he’s the very one that helps her understand she should finally tap into the Force, and she does and BEATS HIS ASS!! i was cheering throughout, and the end, with Rey barring her teeth as the very earth splits open to separate them is sublime. Rey is the Sharapova of Force users LOL.

i did notice kind of a plothole. if the starkiller base is made in a planet, it has to be static, so when all the nearby suns are used up, that whole weapon becomes useless, right?! at least the DS was mobile.

the ending with Luke is perfect, because it takes so long to finally wrap the shot, it’s a huge tease and it works every time!

what is shameful: Leia’s role in TFA. JarJar should be fucking ashamed of what he did to Carrie Fisher. thank god we had Rian Johnson in charge for what would be her final appearance in the SW universe, so we got a powerful, Force inclusive performance.

JJ doesn’t like R2 (that’s akin to high treason!) so he sidelines the little guy and makes his very own wonder droid. ugh, TLJ cemented my dislike for BB8. i H8 BB8

but. apart from the scenes where he takes off his helmet and his hair is freshly blowdried in soft curls, Adam Driver is spectacular. a little rapey, that didn’t change, but certainly very pleasing to watch. his performance is better in TLJ, but then again, he can emote more. got a chuckle everytime he trashed a room due to anger.

tomorrow, TLJ for the second viewing. i will be in no rush so this time i won’t miss the broom Force-pull at the end nor the dedication. i will bring tissues and will be wearing gloves, so no more finger chewing.
