The Journalist and the Winter Soldier

Description: You’re a journalist in New York City who is preparing to interview the infamous Winter Soldier, James Barnes. During your interview sessions you find that your relationship with him may go beyond that of journalist and interview subject. Can the two of you keep things platonic or will the lines become blurred along the way? Read the previous chapters here

A/N: I combined chapters 7 and 8 because I wanted things to move along already. We’re finally getting into it! 

Chapter 7

“Hey doll.” Bucky greeted as he opened your door for you. Seriously, how many times was he going to do this before you would stop swooning? 

“Hi.” You replied breathily. It wasn’t your fault. You had tried counting down backwards from ten in your car but nothing could’ve prepared you for this. Bucky was dressed in casual dark wash jeans and a red henley shirt that perfectly showcased the muscles he had probably been working on in the gym that morning. His wide stance was alarming in the way that it comforted you. Usually such a man would freak you out, having the power to easily overpower you. But with Bucky it made you feel safe, protected even. He had showered since your last encounter which was evident by the fact that the inviting scent of winter pine was rolling off of him in droves. His black locks were pulled back until he was wearing a half up half down hairstyle, one which suited him expertly. Fuck, he was sexy and the worst part was you don’t really think he was trying to be. He was just being himself. 

“So what seems to be the problem?” You questioned, as you realized the two of you were just loitering by your car in the parking lot. Bucky took the cue and stretched his arm out indicating for you to head inside. As he maneuvered around you to open the door, his right hand rested on the small of your back and you found your body working overtime not to react. Which was a lot harder than it sounded. It felt like your body was singing from where his hand touched you over the thin material of your dress. 

“Follow me and I’ll show ya.” Bucky announced, thick Brooklyn accent making its way through his words even after all this time. You smiled to yourself as you followed him through the winding corridors of the compound until you came to a wing you had never seen before, marked ‘Private Apartments.’ Oh, so this must be where they live. You, and most of the public, had thought that they lived in their own rooms and had a communal kitchen like a college dorm, but that wasn’t the case at all. 

Bucky pressed the palm of his hand to a scanner and said his last name aloud before he was granted entrance. Behind the generic white door was Bucky’s private apartment which was more than you could ever hope for in the city. Top of the line appliances filled out the kitchen and surrounding living space and then there was a hallway which you assumed led to the bathroom and his bedroom. The thought made your heart flutter slightly. 

“You like what you see?” He joked, and you remembered who you were with. You could feel your cheeks burning up in embarrassment having been caught gawking at his personal space. 

“Sorry,” you replied sheepishly, “It’s just this is something I could only dream about in the city. You pay $800 for a hole in the wall and that’s without utilities.” You joked, trying to make light of your less than stellar living situation. It wasn’t Bucky’s problem. 

“All you gotta do is save the world a few times and it’s yours.” He joked back, but you could hear the sobering truth behind it. He was right. Every single person who had an apartment like this one deserved it. You would gladly take your shoebox any day than have to deal with a quarter of the shit these guys deal with on a daily basis. 

You cleared your throat as you tried to recover from your blunder. Looking anywhere but at Bucky, which was hard because he was currently taking up the larger part of your field of vision. “So the problem.” You stated, wanting to get this evening back on track as soon as possible. 

“Right, well I tried to click the damn thing and put it on the TV but I can’t figure out how. I don’t think the link you sent me is workin’” 

You tried to stifle a laugh. He really reminded you of your dad right now, can shoot a gun well and have knowledge way beyond your means, but give ‘em technology and they’re as helpless as a kitten. You took his phone from his hands, pressed a few buttons, and had it pulled up on the screen in no time. 

“How’d you do that?” He asked in awe. 

“A magician never reveals her secrets.” You jested, feeling brave in his presence and throwing in a wink for good measure. But now that your task was done, you felt awkward and unsure of what to do now. You began to turn around and head for the door but Bucky gently grabbed your wrist with his metal hand, sending goosebumps racing up your arm. 

“Stay for a little? I’d rather thank the artist responsible while she’s still here.” He said in a voice barely above a whisper. Oh, did you want to stay for more than a little. You wanted to stay for a very long time. But you didn’t say that, couldn’t say that. So you just nodded your head slightly and moved further into Bucky’s apartment, sitting on his gray couch in front of the TV. 

“Can I get you anything to drink? Water, beer, wine?” He questioned, as you heard him open the refrigerator and root around for beverages to offer you. 

“White wine would be great if you have it.” You called out, facing the TV mounted on the wall, not trusting yourself what you would do if you looked back at him. You heard him pull a bottle out from the fridge and the telltale pop of a cork. The sound of wine being poured into glasses was music to your ears as you tried to relax a little bit. You heard his boot clad footsteps make their way to you on the couch. He passed you your glass of chilled white wine and you looked up at him as you accepted it. 

“Here you go.” He spoke softly as he handed you the glass, his fingertips brushing yours. The sensation of his rough fingers and the cool condensation on the glass made your breath hitch and you found yourself staring into ice blue eyes as they locked with yours. Just as soon as the sensation was there, it was gone. He removed his hand and sat on the opposite end of the couch from you with his own glass in hand. 

You took a generous swig from your glass and appreciated the way the wine slid down your throat. Cool liquid gliding along your taste buds with a slight acidic aftertaste. Just what you needed. You sighed contentedly as you reached for the remote and placed your glass on the coffee table. 

“Ready?” You questioned into the quiet room, studying Bucky’s profile. He was sitting at attention with both feet planted firmly on the floor and his back ramrod straight. Like how he was the day you first met him. You guessed this was less comfortable for him than he was willing to admit. He gave you a terse nod of approval before you pressed play. 

Watching your own work was something you often dreaded. Usually it was under the watchful supervision of the higher-ups. Eagle eyed viewings waiting to pick apart your pieces for criticisms and ways to improve. You could feel yourself shifting into professional mode even though you had a glass of wine in hand and were sitting in the living room of the subject of the piece. Not exactly screaming professional. 

You took another generous sip of wine as your voice over started, there were few things in this world you hated more than hearing your own voice recorded. 

“What?” Bucky questioned, eyeing you from his side of the couch, clearly picking up on your discomfort. 

“Sorry, it’s just, I hate hearing my own voice. Sometimes I wonder who let me speak, I sound terrible.” You explained, growing embarrassed at the thought of Bucky having to hear your grading voice and wondering what he must think of it. 

“Don’t worry doll, as far as voices go, you’ve about one of the prettiest I’ve ever heard.” He said earnestly, not a drop of sarcasm in his tone. Oh. You tried to convince yourself that the flush you felt was from the wine and certainly not from the effect his words had on you. 

You mumbled an embarrassing gratitude as you continued to watch the footage. Good exterior shots of the Avengers compound, establishing the interview, good work up. You knew this sequence like the back of your hand, you and Chase spent enough hours editing it together, making sure one shot blended seamlessly with the next. You heard your slight intake of breath when Bucky came on the screen for the first time. Cameras really didn’t do him justice, they lacked the intimacy that could only be felt from sharing space with him, one on one. 

Ever so slightly, you angled your head away from the television and towards Bucky so you could watch his reaction to seeing himself on film. He seemed to relax, even though the amount was microscopic, and watched the interview with interest, as if it wasn’t himself he was watching, but someone he was curious to learn more about. He didn’t speak but he didn’t need to, his body language said it all. His once tense shoulders began to droop and his back began to slouch ever so slightly. His planted feet became a little more relaxed and he stopped clutching his wine glass like a life raft. The interview ended and the screen faded to black and for a moment that was it. The two of you sat there in silence. Bucky watching the screen and you watching him, waiting. 

He took his flesh hand and carded it though his hair, taking it out of its neat style. He breathed out a long sigh before he turned his body to face you. Immediately you went into damage control mode. 

“You hate it.” You said flatly. Beginning to put your wine glass down because you knew he would surely ask you to leave now. You felt your heart begin to deflate, Bucky Barnes was tearing you apart and he hadn’t even said anything. He remained stoic for a moment until he realized what you were doing and then he moved into action, pulling your hands in his and telling you to stop moving. 

“Woah woah, hey, no. I- I didn’t say anything because I’m shocked.” Bucky began, threading his fingers through yours and you found yourself looking down at your entwined hands. A mixture of flesh tones and the gunmetal black of his new limb. “Any time I’ve seen my name or image in the media it’s always negative. The Winter Soldier, former assassin, threatening the world. Nobody has ever shown anything else. Until you.” 

At those last two words your head snapped up and your eyes met his. Huge and blue and zealous in their meaning. 

“Really?” You whispered, dumbfounded. 

“Y/N.” He murmured your name into the open air, moving closer to you so you would believe his words. Suddenly his knees were touching yours and your bodies were squared to one another, and he took your head in his hands, pleadingly. “You’ve captured me the way nobody has in seventy years. I’m not some sensationalized hyper killer or golden age war hero, I’m just me, James Buchanan Barnes, and I am so thankful for you.” He finished as he pressed his forehead against yours, breathing you in, expressing his gratitude. 

He slowly brought his metal hand away from your cheek to gently caress the back of your neck and you leaned into his touch. His flesh hand moved a stray piece of hair from your face and his eyes searched yours, asking permission that you had granted the second you walked in the door and you both knew it. 

Silently and so slow that it ached, he pressed his full lips against yours. Just a hint of a kiss, shy really. Unsure if he should proceed, until you answered him. You opened up for him and that was all it took for Bucky. He pressed his lips against yours with a purpose now. You. You responded back with hungry kisses of your own, all those pent up feelings finally finding their release. James deepened the kiss by swiping his tongue across your bottom lip, asking for entry. You responded by greeting his tongue with your own and you felt his smile against your lips. Sparks danced behind your eyes as you gave yourself over to him, let his tongue explore every inch of your mouth. Wordlessly he scooped you into his lap and wrapped a strong arm around your torso. You moaned into his mouth as your hand carded through his hair like you had longed to do since you saw him, mixing fantasy with reality finally. 

Through the moaning and kissing you heard your phone ring and that was like a bucket of ice water thrown over your head, awakening you to the reality of what had just transpired between you two. This was a subject, an interview, and here you were jamming your tongue down his throat. You quickly removed yourself from your position in his lap as you answered your phone, trying your best to get your erratic breathing under control. 

“Hello?” You practically spat into the receiver. You weren’t sure who the harsh tone was for, the caller for interrupting you or yourself for letting it happen. 

“Jesus, sorry, no need to shoot the proverbial messenger.” Chase admonished from the other end of the line. 

“Shit, Chase sorry. What is it?” You questioned, feeling Bucky’s eyes roam over you, not daring to move from his current position on the couch. 

“I need you to take a look at that piece Ashley did on crops upstate, it needs your eye.” He explained, clearly sounding as exasperated as you felt. But you were thankful nonetheless, any excuse to get out of Bucky’s apartment immediately was good enough for you. 

“Got it.” You replied quickly before you hung up. “I gotta go.” You threw the excuse at Bucky as you gathered your belongings and made a bee-line for the door, not bothering to look at the man who was calling out your name as you left. You had really screwed up.
