I have literally seen enough to want to bleach my eyes out, I don't want to talk about my daughters sex life and especially with Rock or Ages." He rubbed the bridge of his nose, sighing deeply. Bucky leaned over to Sam and nudged him, also happening to catch Thor's attention, "Rock of Ages? Is that code speak for his dick or how good in bed he is?" All three adult men began to giggle like children; Sam and Bucky giggling the worst. "Ok if we are done being 10 year olds, I think Steve wants to finish this up?" Natasha snapped at the three. The Captain smiled fondly at his girlfriend, nodding her way as a thank you. However, before he could speak...

"So I am really, really, REALLY sorry Astrid but it is Loki isn't it? Don't be shy! We aren't here to kink shame you. Vision and I do this stuff all the time-" Wanda turned her attention to a loud choke and spray of water from Tony who was coughing loudly. "Damn it! What the fuck did I just fucking say!?"

The meeting went on for another 2 hours, which was 2 hours too much. At the hour and a half mark, Astrid was convinced her fluids started to pool underneath her as Loki had also DEMANDED she forgo panties. "F-FUCK!!" The nurse collapsed to her knees, whimpering and shaking as this time Loki turned up the vibrator and did not relent. "L-Loki p-p-pleassse!!" "I do not want to hear excuses, whore." He growled, releasing her neck and taking her by her hand back to his room. A Romoine Coffee Shop AU • • • AO3

My first attempt at anything resembling an actual fic, I do hope you enjoy! and that I haven’t made too many typos. I don’t really proofread lol.

Hermione had been working at the cafe for a few months now. It wasn’t the most glamorous job, but when Minerva had asked her to join the staff she couldn’t say no. She had been coming for years, browsing the meticulously sorted shelves with a mug of hot chocolate in hand before settling down at a corner table to start the day’s homework. She knew the menu by heart, and she had the regulars’ orders written on a chart taped to the counter by the espresso machine.

Hermione tied her apron around her waist, quickly punching in to start her shift.

“Hi, er, I’m Ronald. I mean, Ron. Ron Weasley.” She nearly lept out of her skin at the lanky redhead standing right behind her.

“Hermione,” she snapped, annoyed at herself for jumping. “You’ve got a bit of dirt on your nose.” She couldn’t help but notice how blue his eyes were.

“Oh...I’ll just, um, grab my apron then,” Ron’s face turned almost as red as his hair as he shuffled around, wiping at the side of his nose.

That day, the new boy managed to spill milk all over the floor, mess up an espresso (how he managed that, Hermione wasn’t sure), wedge the cash register closed, and burn his hand with hot coffee. He claimed he “got distracted,” which Hermione thought was a load of baloney. What could have possibly distracted him in a coffee shop? What an idiot. He seemed kind though, always trying to make the customers laugh, and that smile--no. No. She was not attracted to idiot dirty-nose boy. She shook her head and returned to scrubbing the counter with new vigor.

“That’s NOT what I ordered,” a middle-aged woman with bleached yellow hair glared at Hermione, tapping her foot impatiently. “I asked specifically for an iced coffee, not whatever this cold brew nonsense is,” she scoffed.

“Cold brew is coffee that was prepared in a cold environment and then we add ice. Iced coffee is hot coffee that has ice added to it,” Hermione’s patience was wearing thin. All morning it been one angry customer after another. “They’re essentially the same thing, but we only carry cold brew.”

“I don’t care what the difference is, I want an iced coffee or I want my money back!” the woman’s face was beginning to go an alarming shade of purple. “The customer service at this place is unreal. Where is your manager, let me speak to the manager RIGHT NOW,” the woman gestured wildly, searching for the mythical manager that would solve all of her problems.

Hermione put on her best customer service smile. “She’s in the back, I’ll be just a moment.”

“Unbelievable. That’s what happens when you hire people of her kind. Better off staying in their own country if you ask me,” the woman muttered to her husband just loudly enough to ensure Hermione heard.

She made it as far as the freezer room before collapsing to the ground in heaving sobs. God, why were people like this! It would have been fine if the coffee had been the only problem, but then she had to go and make it personal. She couldn’t help the way she looked, couldn’t hide the cloud of kinky curls on her head or her skin that matched the color of the coffee beans. They took one look and they judged, they hated, and there was nothing she could do. She was utterly powerless.

Hermione heard two soft taps at the door and a freckle-faced boy peered around the corner. “Hey, I heard what happened. You okay?” She stifled a sob in response. “That lady had the attitude of a grizzly bear,” Ron said, sliding onto the floor next to her and passing her a napkin. “And not the cute fluffy ones, more like the ones that rip your face off and leave you for the birds.”

“That’s disgusting,” Hermione sniffled.

“Sure would be a shame if someone sweetened her dumbass iced coffee with a shit ton of artificial sweeteners known for making you, well, shit yourself,” he turned to look at her and gave her a smug smile. “No pun intended.”

“You could get fired for that, you know.” Sniff

“Yeah well, she deserved it after what she said to you. Fucking racist.”

“You-- sniff-- you heard that?”

“Course I heard that. Nearly took her bloody head off, too, but I had to settle for mild poisoning.”

“You didn’t have to do that, I can handle it.” Sniff. “It’s not like that was the first time I’ve heard it.” Sniff. “I’m handling it.”

“Yeah, I can see that,” he said, handing her another napkin. “And besides, I couldn’t let her just walk out the door.” Ron began tearing the remaining napkin to angry shreds. “Someone had to teach that bitch a lesson.” He hesitated.

“I know it’s not the same by any means, but growing up my family didn’t exactly have a lot of money.” Now out of napkins, Ron picked up a discarded straw and began bending it around his fingers. “And kids are mean, you know? Took one look at my torn jeans and worn hoodie and they may as well have taken me out with the rubbish.” He turned his attention away from the straw. God, his eyes were so blue. “No one deserves to feel less than human, especially not in the way that bitch wanted. So yeah, I did have to do that.”

He slowly got up from the freezer floor, wiping his hands on his jeans. “I’m going back out there before I freeze my ass off. You just had to pick the bloody freezer.” Hermione cracked a tiny smile and wiped the last of the tears from her face. Maybe this Ron guy wasn’t so bad after all.

The line of customers waiting at the pickup station was quickly approaching critical levels. She hadn’t worked with the new guy since the day of the freezer, and it was Ron’s first day working the drink station instead of the register. It was not going well. Poor guy couldn’t tell a latte from a cappuccino.

“Oh shit oh shit oh shit oh FUCK!” Hermione heard a loud crunch and whipped around to find a wide-eyed Ron frantically trying to stop the flow of ice cubes spilling from the dispenser. His jammed his hands underneath the mouth of the machine and ice filled them almost instantly. “Shishitshitshitshit!” he muttered as he dumped the handfuls of collected ice on the floor in favor of violently pumping the machine lever. A small icy mountain was beginning to form around his feet.

“Uh, I’ll be right back,” Hermione hoped the elderly man in the middle of ordering his breakfast wasn’t a yeller. “It’ll be just a second.” She hurried over to where Ron was now watching helplessly as ice continued to pour from the machine.

“Sometimes it just--” she pushed the lever up into the machine wiggled it around. “--slips out of place.” Hermione heard a soft click as the lever fell back into place. A few stray cubes plinked onto the ice mountain.”Should be good now.” Ron’s ears had gone very pink. “It happened to me on my first day, too. All cool.” Hermione kicked herself silently. “All cool.” Idiot.

“You should probably go get that,” he uttered sheepishly, wiping his sopping hands on his apron. He nodded towards the counter where the old man still waited. Ron’s face still matched nicely with his hair.

Later as Hermione headed to hang her apron in the breakroom, she found Ron about to clock out. “Hey, I realize I didn’t thank you earlier. You’re a real lifesaver,” Ron said, the tips of his ears going pink again. “Thought for sure that guy was gonna let me have it if he didn’t get his frappa-mocha-shit me-chino in the next twelve seconds.”

“No problem. I wasn’t gonna let you drown in ice cubes, would have been far too much work to clean up.”

He snorted and headed towards the door. “Good to know I mean so much to you.”

They talked more often after that, about uni and life back home and bad impressions of rude customers. Minerva told them they “bickered like an old couple,” but talking to him was just so...easy. It felt right. They understood each other, somehow, despite being so different. She learned he was in his second year, still undecided, but he knew he wanted to work with people and maybe start his own shop. He had a large family (six siblings!), and his mother apparently made the best blueberry muffins in the world. She told him about wanting to go to medical school (“No wonder you’ve always got your nose in a book.”) and how she didn’t speak to her family much but she hopes that they’re doing okay.

Ron was completely obsessed with football. He watched every match with his phone snuck out on the counter. Before Ron, the most Hermione knew about football was that you had to kick the ball in the goal. She still didn’t care for the sport, but Ron looked so happy when he talked about it. When he asked her what on earth she does if she doesn’t care for sports, she told him about her favorite books. He didn’t seem very interested, but a few days later she saw him putting Pride and Prejudice back into his backpack. She couldn’t help but smile.

The Complete Guide To Hydroponic Sanitation & Sterilization

Sterilizing and sanitizing hydroponic equipment is really important. Why is that?

Diseases

Priority for cleanliness in your grow room affects the health of your plants. If you do not keep your room clean you are opening up pathways for disease and fungal pathogens.

Unclean Produce

It would harm your health if you are not being clean in your grow room and around your plants. You are going to be harvesting produce that is not clean and probably not healthy for your customers.

Certifications

Another reason why cleanliness and sanitation are important would be certifications and standards. There are many certifications and standards out there whether you're trying to grow organic or get any other certification.

There are usually very detailed standards when it comes to cleanliness and sanitation. So make sure you check with that specific licensing board for that certification to make sure you are doing everything correctly.

Difference between sanitation versus sterilization

Sanitation is just general cleanliness of your grow rooms. So things like removing dead plant material from your towers cleaning up any spills or any messes sweeping mopping cleaning out your filters scrubbing down and keeping your harvest and planting area clean and well prepped. These are things that all make sanitation and sterilization seem much different. Sterilization refers to killing microbial life like bacteria, microbes, fungi, anything small like that.

Sanitation and sterilization are typically accomplished with things like hydrogen peroxide bleach and antibacterial products like Lysol. It is essential to make sure you are killing off the microbial life. So, in conclusion, you will be wanting to use both sanitation and sterilization in combination to make sure that your grow room is as clean and healthy as it can possibly be.

Materials you need to use

A various array of cleaning utensils like scrubby sponges stiff bristle brushes are needed. Long handle brushes are great for getting in hard-to-reach areas like your reservoir when you want to clean that out. It is also very important to have gloves and eye protection you will be using some various chemicals throughout your sanitation and sterilization processes.

You also need things like scissors to help you remove dead plant material that may be clinging to your plants. You will also need various cleaning agents to help complete this. You will have things like bleach and hydrogen peroxide. Bonus points if you go for food grade hydrogen peroxide - it is a little bit more highly concentrated than what you can buy on the store shelf. However, if you can't get that easily regular peroxide will work.

We also like to use an agent for general sanitation around the room. That's just for cleaning up spills and messes that are not killing microbial life. So a general degreaser like this works really well if you don't like using things like that. You can definitely use vinegar for cleaning that will work as well. One more option that we use for sanitization that you might not have up there is an ozone machine. Now ozone can be pumped into the air of your grow room and it can sterilize basically anything it comes into contact with including human life, which makes it a little bit dangerous. Because you cannot be around while that ozone machine is running.

If you are using ozone to help sanitize your hydro solution by pumping that ozone into your nutrient reservoir, it is much safer for human use. You don't have to worry about the toxicity of having that ozone running and having people nearby. So you can add ozone in your reservoir to help keep that clean.

Obviously, you would not want to just go dumping bleach or peroxide into your reservoir willy-nilly. You're probably going to kill your plants. There is a safe amount of peroxide that you can add to your reservoir while you have plants in it bleach however I would not recommend adding while you have plants in your system.

Bleach is more for sterilizing things while you have nothing in your system. So you can flush it out and start fresh and obviously with cleaning agents. For sanitation, these really probably should not be getting into your reservoir. They probably will kill your plants however using these to clean things around the general area of your plants is perfectly safe as long as you are not getting them on the foliage.

How To Clean The System

First, start with sanitizing and sterilizing your room so you would want to sweep and mop your floors. You would want to clean scrub down your walls things like that anything to keep your room just neat and tidy have fewer problems with mess. You're going to have fewer problems with plant diseases. You want to keep your equipment sanitized and sterilized as well - this one is really important. You want to keep your hydro system clean and sterilized so you want to keep all the tools that you use with it cleaned and sterilized.

You're opening up the possibility of infection in your plants every single time you cut with a non sterilized piece of equipment. That is the key to limiting the spread of disease. The more cleaning that we do for our equipment with a vertical system the better. That helps you keep the top lines very cleaned out and prevents clogging. We also like to vacuum out the drainage that keeps any debris out from clogging up our drainage and causing floods. And generally, we just like to give a good sterilized wipe down of tower faces, gutters, rack faces - anything like that, keep it nice and clean. When it comes to your reservoir you will either want to occasionally scrub down the sides of the reservoir or you can use a pressure washer if you don't have a pressure washer.

This is where a big brush really comes handy to reach into those hard to get places of your reservoir. But once you have scrubbed it down you can always go ahead and sterilize your reservoir with something like bleach or peroxide. And then flush your tank out; fill it up with clean fresh water and start new. We also like to keep our filters very clean - remember to check your swirl filter. If you're using a larger system that one gets all your large particulate matter.

This is important especially if you're running something like ozone or hydrogen peroxide on a regular basis in your reservoir. Otherwise just by keeping your Y-filter cleaned out and sanitized is good enough when you're cleaning your tower media. Remember to remove as many roots as you can. You also may want at some point to sterilize the media from your towers. You can do that with dilute bleach and you can also do that with hydrogen peroxide. There are two ways you can go about doing this - you can either put these into your reservoir or run them through the towers. And let it cycle through your entire system. If you are doing bleach, remember to flush the system after doing that another option is to get a flood table tray. That you can actually dunk that tower media into your dilute bleach solution.

So you may be asking yourself we've cleaned just about everything in the grow room.

Now, what about the plants? Do you sanitize and sterilize the plants? You may want to remove your dead growth. If you leave that behind, it can open you to fungal or bacterial infections in your plants or any other nasty diseases like that. You don't necessarily need to sterilize your plants all the time. A lot of these sterilizing agents will kill your plants, however, you can do things like fungicidal sprays and dunks.

But know that if you do need to sanitize and sterilize your plants, there are fungicides available to help you do that whenever you want to be sanitizing and sterilizing. This is a very wide open subject that's up for debate it really depends on the size of your system. If you're doing just a little home system, you can supply yourself. You're probably not going to be cleaning stuff out as much as someone who has an organic certification and are producing thousands of crops. They're going to be cleaning all the time.

Usually, most people in a hobby market can get away with just cleaning when they need to, so it doesn't cause problems of fungal infections. Bacterial infections don't cause drainage and flow problems within their reservoir pumps, drip emitters. So you don’t get to know. If you have a certification or a license, check with that licensing board that certification board for their cleaning standards and their schedule. If you are not licensed and not certified, we still recommend keeping up to a regular cleaning schedule. Try doing everything at least once a week if not more frequently. You may need to do it more frequently to prevent things like clogs. And you're going have random spills and messes if you do not do it. Remember that cleaning is almost a daily activity in the professional hydroponic world.

Safety Guide

We're going to give you a little bit of safety do's and don'ts for these two topics to make sure you're not making any large mistakes in your hydroponic setup. There are lethal doses of these cleaning and sanitation products that we have listed here. Obviously, you should not be using super-strength cleaners and degreasers on plants. You should not be dumping these into your reservoirs. You're going to kill your plants if you do that. Some of these other ones like hydrogen peroxide can be used in hydroponic solutions with living plants.

In very small amounts, vinegar is also very safe. However, bleach is going to kill your plants pretty quickly. There must be gloves and safety glasses to protect your hands and eyes. They can be fairly harsh chemicals. Remember if you do go the route of peroxide and obtain food grade hydrogen peroxide remember that food grade is much more concentrated than what you get on the store shelf in a little bottle. It actually needs to be treated like a caustic substance at that concentration until it is diluted in water.

Ozone can be toxic to humans. If you are pumping ozone into the air you should not have anyone working in that area. However, you can pump ozone into a liquid into your hydro reservoir and that is safe to work around as long as you're not running it constantly.

“Come onnnn. You liked it, y/n,” He tries to cheer you up. But you just curl more into his pillow, hiding your face. Soonyoung grumbles and rolls over, closer to you. At least he didn’t cause your ass and poor vagina to hurt. Jihoon huffs.

“I’ll buy you some ice cream,” he sing songs. You peep one eye open.

“What flavor?” you ask, pretending to sound passive. He knows you’re bullshitting.

You look at Soonyoung, face all scrunched up cutely, then up at Jihoon who’s got you two caged in. He looks so hopeful, eyes sparkling. You sigh and roll your eyes.

“Fine. You can fuck my ass next time,” you oblige, earnign a wet kiss on the cheek as he hops off both of you.

“Let me go get my baby that ice cream then,” he calls, grabbing his wallet yet he calls for Seokmin as he waddles out of the doorway. You roll your eyes, but giggle as you feel the blonde pull you closer.

“What do I have to do to get some ass action?”

E-Cigarettes May Cause Serious Lung Damage

Vaporizing e-liquids is a new and exciting way to take the Nicotine delivery system into your own home. Now you don't have to go running to the store or pharmacy, selecting from an array of vaporizers and nicotine gum to find out if a certain product will work for you. With a Vaporizer, you get to test it first hand before you buy it. It eliminates the need to rely on your senses to tell you if it's a safe option or not. Here are some things to know about Vapes and E-Liquids:

First, you must understand that vaporizing your nicotine product through your E-Liquids is not as safe as what you may be thinking. In fact, there are some serious health effects associated with this practice. Nicotine is highly toxic, especially in large doses. If you use it in excess, you can experience serious lung damage, plus various other negative side effects. This is why it's important to follow the manufacturer's directions when it comes to using your vaporizer.

There is an alternative to vaporizing your e-juice however. That is called swaping. Swaping involves inserting your finger in the pump and then heating it up to where it is warm enough to vaporize your liquids. You simply repeat this process over again to produce steady nicotine flow into your lungs. This is safe for you to do without worrying about harming your lungs and your fingers.

Not everyone should be a fan of this practice however. There was a recent study that showed that people who did not like the taste of their e-juice did not typically experience any serious lung damage from using a vaporizer. The problem was found with those people who were using higher wattage e-juice. When the wattage was increased, the amount of vapor produced became less consistent, causing a shift in the flavorings from light to dark.

By making more diacetyl in the secondhand vapor, smokers could be increasing the nicotine concentration in their system without risking their lungs. This is especially true if the smoker is relying on nicotine replacement therapy (like inhalers or gum) to help their withdrawal symptoms. Even if they stop taking these medications, they may still be increasing their nicotine exposure by inhaling bleach-like flavors that are added to e-juice. Bleach is also dangerous to your lungs so this should be a big consideration before assuming that you can breathe it in without problems.

The new study found that using a reward system worked better than just vaporizing your e-juice and doing nothing. Users who used a reward system were less likely to relapse into smoking after quitting than those who did nothing. This is because the brain uses a reward system to keep you hooked on nicotine. If you are able to "latch on" to something less harmful to your brain, such as a coupon for a free cup of coffee or other item, then you will be less likely to fall into the same trap repeatedly. And this works in reverse too - if you can increase the amount of nicotine you get from one cigarette, the less likely you are to get caught in the vicious cycle of smoking again.

Also, the chemicals vaporized in e-liquids aren't all that different from the chemicals found in cigarettes. In fact, there are more chemicals being used in e-liquids than in 電子煙, because they can be sprayed directly onto the skin of the user. This is potentially very dangerous because even the vapers themselves may not be aware of the chemicals that they are putting into their body. It's been shown that people who smoke with electronic cigarettes may be unaware that the chemicals are there and may unknowingly cause themselves cancer or other health problems.

Even though the new study doesn't directly point fingers at vapers, it does seem like a smart move to assume that the chemicals used in e-liquids may cause serious lung damage and diseases, even death. Though this study hasn't been entirely conclusive, it is still important to remember that e-liquids do still contain chemical agents that can irritate the respiratory tract, even if they are not ingested. This is why it's so important to use vaporizers to make your own e-juices. By avoiding ingesting any chemicals while you smoke with an electronic cigarette, you can ensure that you won't run the risk of having cancer, asthma and other respiratory problems later on down the road.

Tony couldn't keep the yawn from stretching his mouth open.

He heard Ziva chuckle before he even saw her. "Late night, Tony?"

Tony swatted some police tape out his way. "Good morning, Miss David. And yes, I was busy going through some more episodes of my show."

"What do you call it in English? Binging?"

"Binge-watching. And no, if I were to binge-watch it, I would be done with the entire show by now." Tony looked around the building where they were all called in. Ugh. "I'm so done with this place," Tony complained. "What I'd do to be watching Monica strip down to those cute, pink bikini bottoms."

"Monica?" Ziva laughed.

"Yeah, she's a tiger," Tony explained. "Just had a fight with Kiara last episode. Punched her lights out."

"How wonderful," Ziva mused.

"Hot," Tony agreed. "Hey, where is everybody?"

"Gibbs and Abby are in Tarsibo's office, and McGee is coming in right now."

Tony turned to see McGee shuffling through the doors.

"McGee!" Tony greeted. "Look at you! Last one to arrive."

McGee gave him a cheeky grin. "Unlike you, I've never been here. Didn't exactly know my way."

Tony glared at him. Way to rub it in.

"I thought with your degree in technology," Tony said, "You would have been able to use a GPS just fine."

"I don't know," McGee said, "I kind of liked my drive."

"I rolled down my windows," Ziva shared, "The breeze felt quite nice."

Tony gave her a look that he hoped conveyed his disapproval. What a liar.

"And it appears that we are all here," Ziva said.

"This looks familiar," McGee commented.

Tony turned once more to the entrance.

"NCIS," said a blonde girl, showing her badge and I.D. to a cop.

"NCIS, huh?" Tony said, looking over the group of four.

"Looks like they had a rough night," Ziva murmured.

"Grover looks pretty down…" McGee frowned.

Tony couldn't help but agree. The nervous, nerdy, usually chatty agent seemed very despondent. A contrast to Agent La Rue, who was in a different, perhaps worse, state and spirit.

"Hey, La Rue," Tony said, "Don't go contaminating the crime scene! What did you sleep in, a sandbox?"

"Listen, punk," La Rue growled, shaking some more sand off her, "The crime scene is the office. Besides, why don't you clean yourself up? Jeez, look at you. Eye boogers and, gross, a drool line."

What?! Ziva and McGee snickered as he quickly checked his reflection. Holy-!

"Drooling in your sleep is a very natural and, in fact, a healthy occurrence," Tony defended while scrubbing at his face.

Percy enthusiastically agreed. Tony didn't know how to feel about that.

Lima gave a sigh. "It's really not. Where's Gibbs?"

Ziva answered her before Tony could argue her first statement.

"This way."

Ziva opened the door of the office to reveal… a mess. "Woah," Tony breathed.

"Good morning, everyone!" Abby greeted from her place connecting extension cords.

"Abby, I think you got a little carried away," Tony said.

"Not at all, Tony," Abby said, "I wanted to test all my new blacklights, and this is a perfect time as I can just test this whole office in one go."

"Your blacklights?" Tony asked. He spotted Gibbs standing a little ways off, watching Abby work. "Morning, Boss," Tony said.

Gibbs gave a noncommittal grunt and sipped at his steaming cup of coffee. Coffee… Not for the first time, Tony played with the idea of asking his boss to share his drink.

"Hey," McGee said, nudging one of the lights, "I recognize this one. You got it a couple years ago."

"How can you tell?" Tony asked him.

"The sharpie skulls," McGee answered.

"Are all of these blacklights yours, Abby?" Ziva asked.

"No," Abby said a bit more defensive than normal, "Three are from the lab."

"I count eleven," Lima said.

"What do you need with nine blacklights?" Tony asked.

"That would be eight, Tony," McGee corrected.

Ugh, it was too early to be doing math.

"I think the collection is wonderful, Abby," Ziva said.

"Thanks. Good thing there aren't any windows; makes the job easier. Lights!" Abby called, dramatically.

McGee shut the lights off.

And there wasn't much to look at. Almost every inch of the room, the walls, floors, and ceiling were dark. It wouldn't have made Tony nervous if it wasn't for the few patches of the wall that did glimmer.

"I'm not seeing much glow around the place," Underwood said.

"Maybe he cleaned with some bleach," Abby suggested, shaking a bottle. She went up to the walls and started to mass spray. The walls sparked very briefly with each spray. Tony didn't know what that meant, but he certainly didn't like the way Abby started to spray more frantically, running to different areas in an obvious attempt to get different results.

"Abby?" Tony asked softly. "What is it?"

Tony didn't like the way she looked at him. Now, he really wanted to sucker punch Tarsibo.

"It's…" Abby said, hollowly. "It's all blood."

There was a moment of silence as everyone in the room digested the words the scientist said.

"That's a lot of blood," La Rue commented. Tony wanted to snap at her lack of tact.

"Abby," Gibbs called.

"I'm fine, Gibbs," Abby said, answering his unspoken question, "Just surprised and…" Abby heaved a sigh, "I'm going to have a lot of work going through all of this."

"I'll call in, Ducky," Gibbs told her, "See if he can help you."

"Thanks."

Tony turned the light back on and started to look around the office.

"Did you find anything, Boss?" Tony asked, opening some empty drawers.

"Nope," Gibbs said.

Tch, which meant that everything they had was already back at the garage. There was no trace of the swords or shiny coins. Marko probably took them all with him.

"How about the dumpster?" Tony felt a bit lightheaded at how innocently Lima suggested that. "There might be some evidence that Tarsibo wanted to discard and hoped that the garbage would haul it away."

"Hm," Gibbs hummed, his lips already curled in a devious smirk, "That is true." He rapped on a door next to him that Tony had barely noticed. "I think this would lead us outside," Gibbs said, "But it's locked."

Lima frowned. "Locked from the outside?"

"That's strange," McGee said, "Maybe he just didn't use it much."

"Seeing as the video in the main entrance didn't see him leave," Ziva disputed, "this has to be the one he used."

"Alright," McGee said, fiddling with some tools, "Let me just pick the lock."

"Or we could just break it down," La Rue suggested as she marched towards the door. Gibbs moved aside as the girl kicked the door down. Literally.

Tony hoped Abby wouldn't mind the large boot print she now had to deal with.

McGee gave Agent La Rue a deadpan look. "How efficient."

"You bet on it."

Ziva took a step outside and blinked in surprise. "Not what I was expecting."

"Check. It. Out." Tony gazed at the lines of cars hidden in this back area. "Look at this. Now, this is a collection. Man! Nice Chevrolet- must be from the 60s!"

Underwood let out a huff. “They’re just a bunch of gas guzzlers.”

Ziva let out a grunt as Tony pushed her from his path. "Oh! Sweet!" He pumped. Tony slid his hand across a retro, red Plymouth. "Oh," he breathed, "What a righteous Fury. A pure classic."

"Should we leave you two alone?" Ziva teased.

"Let's not," La Rue huffed, "Don't want to scar Abby when she brings her blacklights out here. Place would light up light a Christmas tree."

Tony ignored her. Although, he sent a worried glance when Underwood choked on thin air.

"We're going to have to run plates," McGee sighed.

"It can't be that bad," Percy said as he eyed at the parked beauties with appreciative eyes. Tony knew he had promise.

"That will be something for when we get back to base," Lima said, moving them on till they got to the dumpsters.

And for a bit, they all just stopped and considered the hulking metal bin.

"So," Lima said first, looking at her team, "Any volunteers?"

La Rue crossed her arms and looked dead on at her boss in defiance. Underwood was practically begging, saying something about his nose being too sensitive. And Percy was trying to scoot his way out of Lima's eyesight.

Tony's eyes latched on the green-eyed agent. "I think this would be a great learning experience for the probie."

Tony felt a spark of accomplishment ignite in his heart as both McGee and Ziva looked up. But they were not his focus…this time. Now, he had a new friend that he made over the last day, and Tony just had to involve him in the DiNozzo welcome.

"Jackson," Tony clarified, "Come on, probie."

Percy's eyes widened as everyone turned their attention to him. "Me? Probie?" He looked at Lima in distress but slumped in obvious dismay at her lack of defense.

Tony mentally cheered as Percy clambered up and into the huge can. That is until Lima showed her true ability. Not in defense but in retribution.

"Percy may need some help," Lima said, "Why don't you join him, Agent DiNozzo? You are his senior."

"S-sure, but-"

"You've done this plenty of times, Tony," Ziva said, which McGee rapturedly agreed to.

"What was it you said?" McGee said. "You would never use your 'superiority' for personal gain?"

The snarky nerd even used his fingers to air quote. Tony mimicked him, making sure to nail his derpy face.

"Yeah," Percy said lowly, "I'm sure you've been in the garbage plenty of times."

'Excuse you?'

"Get in there, DiNozzo," said Gibbs.

Tony sighed in defeat. There was no going against the Boss. He had been sent on his fair share of dumpster diving missions, but even though he was a senior agent, Gibbs kept on pushing him back in.

"Alright," Tony grimaced, trying not to breathe too deeply. "Let's see what we have here." He ripped open a garbage bag and casually dumped its contents. Percy yelped when most of the trash landed on him. How was Tony supposed to that the wind would pick up at just that moment?

"I got a ton of shredded documents," Tony noted, picking up the slim cuts of paper, "but they just look like vehicle and business stuff. Got some water bottles. And check this out," Tony lifted a couple of bags and napkins. "Looks like a logo I recognize."

"The Drowsy Owl," Ziva read.

"There is a whole bunch of stuff from that place in here," Percy said, digging a little deeper. "Guess he really liked the place."

"Bag it," Gibbs ordered.

"Uh, which ones?" Jackson asked.

"Everything," Gibbs and Lima said in time.

Tony grimaced. Oh no, they have started to become one!

"Looks like Ducky is here, Boss," McGee said.

Gibbs nodded, "Keep going through the place."

"Keep up the good work, boys," Lima threw behind her shoulder as she left with Gibbs.

"I should grab some popcorn," La Rue considered once the two squad leaders were out of hearing distance.

"When I was younger, one of my favorite snacks was Klik," Ziva shared, "Especially the chocolate-covered pretzel ones."

"Hm," Clarisse hummed in contemplation, "those sound pretty good right about now, too."

"How about you try helping?" Percy asked sardonically.

"Nah, I'm good right here in the audience," Clarisse jeered, "And don't forget to stuff yourself in one of those trash bags once you're done."

Tony winced at how casually cruel she was to her coworker. There was no doubt going to be another argument between the two, as he saw Percy tense. Tony sighed internally. This was not going to be pretty.

Underwood seemed to be thinking along the same lines, nervously saying, "I'll go jot down those plate numbers."

Tony watched enviously as the agent practically ran away, wishing he could as well when the arguing finally started. Ziva was downright egging them on. Hopefully, he could get out of this dump.

'Sorry, Percy,' Annabeth thought, not sparing a glance even as the sounds of an argument brewed over. She had to get someone who could spot pieces of evidence, not that she doubted Percy's ability, but he wouldn't have even thought about the implications of shredded paper or the products from The Drowsy owl. Agent David had a sharp eye and mind, and Agent McGee would diligently stay and do whatever his boss told him to do to the best of his ability, no matter how enthusiastic he was not. DiNozzo would find what he needed to, then pull rank when Gibbs had left. Clarisse would ensure that by just being herself.

She trusted Percy to find what she had really put him there to search for.

"I'm going to speak to Kahale's C.O." Gibbs told her, "He'll be able to give us more insight on Kahale's apparent assignment, or at least have an idea on who might have sent him."

Annabeth frowned at Gibbs's obvious assumption. "What if this wasn't a mission he received?"

Gibbs gave her a look. "A mechanic would be uncovering this mess by himself in just a few days of being home?"

Annabeth sighed. Welcome to the life of a demigod. But she couldn't just tell him that. "We shouldn't cross it off," she said simply.

He scrutinized her for a moment, before nodding. "I want to speak with the owner of the bar, too," Gibbs continued. "Repeated connections to the bar aren't looking good for him."

"You think the owner is involved?" Annabeth asked. Clarisse had told her that the bartender didn't seem like the type. Maybe he had tricked her.

"We shouldn't cross it off," Gibbs repeated.

Annabeth considered her own words that he threw at her. It was a solid way of thinking, for sure. "Well, you are going to have to hold out on hitting the bar," She told him, "It has not opened yet. Might as well talk to Michael's Commanding Officer first."

She watched as the older investigator shrugged in response, then pull off the lid of his large coffee cup to frown at its contents, or more likely its lack of. Already grumpier than before, Gibbs said, "Let's see what Ducky's got."

"Good morning, Jethro, Agent Lima," Ducky greeted, clambering out of the van.

"You got here pretty quickly," Gibbs said.

"Yes, I was already on the way, having wanted to be at the site of these gruesome murders," Ducky explained

"You went through the tapes, Duck?" Gibbs asked.

"Well, not all of it, I'm afraid. Underwood has given me quite the number of video clips, I haven't had time to go through all of them."

Annabeth made sure not to show anything other than sympathy on her face. "Sorry, Ducky, there were a few years on that tape."

"Yes, full of the man's vile actions."

And that was with all the editing Grover, and she did. There were several clips that Ducky did not receive. Although giving Ducky video that showcased usage of divine weapons wasn't a problem, any obvious displays of powers or mythical creatures had been easily cut out and replaced, thanks to Daedalus' laptop. Grover had taken it pretty hard, though. There were some satyrs, nymphs, and a demigod or two that Grover recognized.

"What did you get from them?" Gibbs asked.

"There is no particular type of person that he targets. They may be young or old, a woman or a man, they could be armed or defenseless. Some he lets live, while others not. He can be rightly called a psychopath, a very murderous one. His killings are random," Ducky said.

'Not random,' Annabeth thought, 'Only when he's hungry.'

"Great," Gibbs sighed, "Did you get anything from the kids' profiles?

"Hm, they are very interesting. I wonder what deeper connection they share with our Staff Sergeant."

"You don't think they are just normal kids?"

"Honestly, Jethro! They were wielding weapons!"

"Not what I meant," Gibbs said, "Are you telling me they may be in on this whole thing?"

"Take a closer look at this image here," Ducky told him, "There is a marking on their forearm. The image is unclear, but it is obviously not a natural mark that they both just happen to share."

"Gang activity?"

"Or…"

"'Or,' Duck?"

"Or they might be part of these Mexican Cartels."

His postulation threw Annabeth off for a second. She could kind of guess how he could come to such an idea, but she really couldn't see two teenagers, far from the border and with no links to a Mexican background, would all of a sudden be part of these cartels. Even if they weren't demigods.

Gibbs also seemed to dismiss the idea. He said, "Cartels don't send kids to do business."

"No," Ducky agreed, "but they do send them to kill."

Gibbs shook his head. It seemed he had reached the same conclusion as Annabeth had.

"There is a possibility," Ducky continued. "I've been over both of their records. ADHD, Dyslexia, hardship in academic and social life, reports of violence, one or both parents dead or missing."

Typical demigods then.

"Not in Wisconsin, Ducky."

Annabeth felt a bit disappointed if that was how Gibbs was derailing this idea.

"Sergeant Kahale was from Maryland," Ducky retorted, "And he displayed all of the mentioned traits. If not hitmen, then perhaps coyotitos or reclutadores. But this man could have easily accumulated a reputation."

The doctor turned his gaze on Annabeth, who had to shake her head, admitting, "Sorry. I don't know much on Mexican Cartels. But I have to agree with Agent Gibbs, it doesn't seem likely."

"Hm, very well. It is not my job to solve the crime," Ducky sighed, before continuing with his reports. "There were a few instances of victims who shared the same circumstances of owning those unique blades that the Staff Sergeant and the children, Mr. Swaller and Miss Hibashira, possessed. What's interesting is that all, except for Sergeant Kahale, and that exception can be argued, all the victims were children."

Annabeth tried to guess what was going through Gibbs's head. After all the evidence that had been revealed to the mortal investigators, victims using celestial blades was expected.

"I fear Abigail is going to be very busy, with the added work of identifying the victims. The families will have to be notified." Ducky lifted an eyebrow at Gibbs, "Have the guardians of those children been told?"

"Not yet," Gibbs.

"Well, it'd be best to do so quickly. Don't go questioning them too hard," Ducky said, fixing Gibbs with a peculiar glare, "They have just lost their children and will all be strongly affected."

"I know, Duck."

Annabeth pondered at the shift in tone of the conversation. And she came to the realization that she really didn't know who the mortal investigators really were. She remembered last night. An empty house with hidden rooms and an obviously unused upper floor. What had Agent Gibbs gone through in his mortal life, outside of solving Navy crimes?

Maybe letting Gibbs call up the victims' families, several of which may be in the know of the divine world, was not the best idea. But if she could do it… and if she could hook up her laptop with whatever program these feds had…

"I can work with the families," She suggested, coming up with an idea. "I'll just need access to facial recognition and the database."

"I'll still have to speak with them," Gibbs said.

"Fine," Annabeth said, already anticipating that, "But this way, they could have time to process the news before you start on them."

Gibbs thought a bit before disappointing her, "I'll need you on this one, if you can get more hints at Greek cult stuff, we could maybe start putting some connecting lines. Get Underwood on it."

Annabeth held tongue before she ranted at him for calling her life a cult. She simply nodded. She could work with that; she'll show Grover how to connect with the federal programs.

"We'll leave you and Abby to take all the samples you need, Duck," Gibbs said, leading Annabeth away.

"Joy," she heard the Medical Examiner grumble.

"Head back to HQ," Gibbs told her, "We'll talk to the C.O, directly. See what he's like."

'See'? Annabeth wondered how they would do that, she doubted Gibbs or his block of a computer could handle a face-time conversation.

But before she could ask, he had moved away and was gathering up his team. She smirked as she saw DiNozzo had already left Percy alone in the dumpster can. There were showers back at NCIS, or so she heard.

She hurried to collect her own company.

"Did you find anything in there?" She asked Percy.

He glared back at her. "No. And thanks a lot, by the way."

"Hey, barnacle boy," Clarisse growled, "We couldn't just let the mortals find drachmae, and they already have a celestial bronze dagger. Let's not give them another."

"Oh. Sorry."

Annabeth sighed. Clarisse had always been quick to realize Annabeth's strategies when they worked together. Percy just relied on his instincts and improvisational skills. It's something that Annabeth had grown to admire and work into her plan making.

"What did you find, Grover?" She asked her satyr friend.

"Um, the cars don't have a smell of monster in them. But they are really old. I think they belonged to Tarsibo's past victims. He must have been here for a really long time."

"Hm, and we just drove him out of his home," Annabeth thought aloud.

"If this general was a Son of Ares like you said, then he is either cowardly or drawing up the power to beat us right back," Clarisse said.

"I said he might be a son of Ares," Annabeth corrected, "But I agree, just letting us kick him out is not something Ares would approve us. But cutting losses and waiting to bring down the hammer is."

"You think he is going to bring the Mexican Cartels into this?" Grover asked.

Annabeth thought back to Michael's notes Abby had sent her. "He confirmed that the Reynosa cartel is involved in the shipment of weapons and suspects Sinaloa's involvement. I didn't find much on them, but I really doubt Tarsibo is going to ask for Cartel help on this. However, the weapons dealing Monster Donuts chain is somewhere he might go to. We really need to find it."

"Yeah," Clarisse agreed, cracking her knuckles, this morning's pounding doesn't cover DiNozzo's insistent jabbering. Not to mention, Ziva is good and is a good match with DiNozzo."

Annabeth nodded at the information that Clarisse implied. "But they are buying our cover stories?"

"Yeah, good thing you fleshed it out, they have gone deep into it and are still searching for more."

In late March, as most of the world was adjusting to lockdown, oceanographer Daniel Harrison was setting sail for the Great Barrier Reef. Though Harrison, a native Australian, had sailed these waters many times before, this particular expedition was different.

On reaching Broadhurst Reef, 100km off the Australian coast, Harrison and his skeleton crew of local scientists – just a few with permission to travel – noticed white corals stretching out in every direction, a sign that the reef was bleaching, and dying, from heat stress. This would be the third mass bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef in just five years, an event that is becoming more likely as the global ocean warms.

Harrison and his team were there to test a radical intervention that, if successful, could spare the world’s largest coral reef from total loss. Known as marine cloud brightening, their approach involves spraying seawater into the air to help form bright clouds that reflect sunlight and cool the waters below. “This is like putting the reef on life support while we deal with the underlying cause. It buys us some time” says Harrison. “Obviously bringing emissions down is the critical thing.”

Climate intervention

While Harrison’s project is small in scale, and in its infancy, marine cloud brightening is just one of numerous practices – collectively known as geoengineering or climate intervention – that could cool the planet, offsetting some of the harm caused by greenhouse gas pollution. With global emissions rising, there’s a growing awareness that we’ll likely need such radical measures to avoid dangerous climate change. “Emissions reductions alone are not going to cut it,” says Phillip Boyd, a marine biogeochemist at the University of Tasmania, Hobart. “We’ve got an increasingly fast-moving problem, and so we may need increasingly fast-moving countermeasures,” says Kelly Wanser, founder of US non-profit Silver Lining, which advocates for research into climate intervention.

Using technology to control the climate is undeniably controversial, seen by some as a quick fix with unknown consequences that diverts attention from the harder task of transitioning to a zero-carbon economy. As such, there’s been little funding for research, and few real-world trials. Harrison’s project – focused on curbing a national ecological disaster – is a notable exception. “It’s essential to know whether these things work or not,” says Harrison. “If we find out that they don’t work, it just strengthens the argument for reducing emissions harder and quicker and not delaying”.

Geoengineering – or deliberate climate control – is not new. During the Cold War, both the US and the Soviet Union funded research into cloud seeding, an approach the US eventually used during the Vietnam war to extend the monsoon season and disrupt enemy troops. Since then, the field has expanded into a wide array of schemes mostly intended to mitigate climate change, though some have co-benefits such as boosting fisheries.

Broadly speaking, there are two approaches. The first, Solar Radiation Management (SRM), aims to limit the amount of heat absorbed by the Earth and could be used to quickly cool the surface. This could be achieved, for instance, by sending reflective sulphates into the stratosphere via giant balloons, or by scattering silica beads over Arctic sea ice to make it more reflective.

The alternative, Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR), focuses on physically extracting CO2 from the atmosphere and storing it, in ecosystems such as mangroves or forests, underground or in the deep ocean. Possibilities here include fertilising the sea surface with iron to promote the growth of plankton – which absorb CO2 from the air – or burning biomass as a source of energy, capturing the CO2 and storing it.

In general, SRM is seen as the more extreme approach that could be deployed with quick results in the case of a regional or global climate emergency.

So far, no single scheme has been proven to work at scale. Most research has focused on land-based solutions, but competing needs, such as ensuring food security, makes these impractical as global solutions. Scientists are now looking to the open ocean as a more pragmatic choice for geoengineering. “This is where it makes most sense, because there’s no conflict of interest with any other issues. These areas are largely unused at the moment and they also make up 50% of the planet’s surface” says Ulf Riebesell, a biological oceanographer at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research in Kiel, Germany.

So far, 27 different marine geoengineering schemes have been proposed. There has been roughly a dozen field tests, mostly focused on ocean iron fertilisation. When a commercial company, Planktos Inc, proposed to test the technology off the Galapagos Islands in 2007, it sparked fears of unregulated interference with the planet’s climate by entrepreneurs looking to turn a quick profit by selling sequestered CO2 as carbon credits.

In response, two intergovernmental bodies sought to outlaw geoengineering. In 2010, the UN’s Convention on Biological Diversity recommended that member states ban the deployment of all large-scale climate intervention technologies, a stance that it reaffirmed in 2016. Meanwhile, in 2013, the UN’s International Maritime Organization (IMO) – which regulates shipping – added ocean iron fertilisation to its list of banned practices. Though the IMO measure is voluntary and yet to be enforced, it symbolises the taboo long associated with climate intervention.

Growing expectations for unproven technologies

With global emissions still growing despite the commitments made in Paris in December 2015, the mood has started to shift. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has made it clear that we have little chance of avoiding dangerous levels of warming, generally regarded as 1.5C or 2C above pre-industrial temperatures, without geoengineering technologies. Meanwhile, high level organisations such as the UN Environment Programme and the US National Academies of Sciences have started to seriously evaluate options for climate intervention.

“We’re now in a situation where we’re implicitly assuming that we’ll need large-scale CO2 removal, but we really haven’t put the time and money into actually finding out whether we can do it or not”, says Jeffrey McGee, director of the Australian Forum for Climate Intervention Governance at the University of Tasmania, Hobart. “The gap between expectations and knowledge, I think, is getting wider and wider by the day.”

There’s not much time to decide which of these options is useful. We shouldn’t wait another year. The science needs to start now.

Globally, just a few marine geoengineering projects are ready for field trials. Ocean artUp, being led by Ulf Riebesell, is testing the idea that artificial ocean upwelling – using vertical pumps – can enrich the ocean’s nutrient-poor subtropical gyres, boosting fish production and CO2 uptake. Riebesell’s team is currently testing various pump designs in waters off the north Atlantic island of Gran Canaria.

Ice911, an initiative started by Leslie Ann-Field, a lecturer at Stanford University in California, aims to prove that it’s possible to use technology to restore Arctic ice. Field’s method involves scattering tiny glass silica beads on the surface of thin, young Arctic sea ice as a way of boosting its reflectivity by 50%. Field’s team was due to test the method on a small scale at Utqiagvik, Alaska this summer but plans have been scaled back owing to Covid. Follow-on plans to test the method in the Arctic at a larger scale will need additional funding.

Meanwhile, the Marine Cloud Brightening Research Program, a collaboration between the University of Washington, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and a team of retired engineers in Silicon Valley, has emerged as the sole significant US effort in marine geoengineering. With limited funding, the team has designed a bespoke nozzle that can generate three trillion particles of tiny salt particles per second from filtered sea water. The next step, developing this into a system of 400-500 nozzles that can be tested in the field, will need roughly $4-5 million, which the research team is currently raising.

The consequences of deploying any of these technologies at scale is unknown. Already, the ocean has soaked up one third of the roughly 40 billion tonnes of CO2 that we emit annually, as well as 93% of the extra heat from climate change. While this has tempered climate change on land, it has caused the ocean to warm rapidly and become more acidic. Conservationists worry that marine geoengineering could harm marine life, or the health of the ocean.

“Geoengineering is not only complex and unknown, but it has huge potential impact,” says Torsten Thiele, founder of the Global Ocean Trust, a non-profit that focuses on marine conservation, technology and governance. “I’m very sceptical on letting people try things out until we’ve sorted out the other steps and processes. Let’s first figure out the framework, let’s figure out the ethics standards, let’s figure out what happens in the lab. We could create a long list of things that would allow natural scientists to improve knowledge without actually trying these things out in nature.”

Governance gap

With field trials inching forward, attention is turning to how geoengineering research – and deployment, if it ever happens – should be governed. Right now, different laws could be applied to geoengineering on land and in the ocean, but none are comprehensive. The IMO amendment on ocean iron fertilisation, for instance, just applies to a single method and then only if the iron is “dumped” at sea, rather than piped or injected, for instance. “What we have right now is a patchwork of rules,” says Kerryn Brent, who researches international environmental law at the University of Adelaide, Australia.

One possibility for governing marine geoengineering is through a new law to protect marine life on the high seas, those waters that are beyond national governance. The law, which is currently being negotiated by the UN, will likely require any activity that takes place on the open ocean to first undertake an environmental impact assessment, a formal process to gauge potential damage to marine life.

While this would limit the possibility of harmful experimentation in the open ocean, some feel there is a need for more structured, high level governance of geoengineering. The problem right now, says Brent, is that no single organisation or body has a mandate to gauge the risk of harm caused by geoengineering against the risk of inaction. “One of the big gaps in governance are rules that will enable decision-makers, countries and scientists to weigh up the risks of a specific research activity or deployment versus the risk of not doing it. We just don’t have those kind of rules available," she says.

“Part of the point of all the testing and modelling that we do is to establish the safety, the efficacy and the risks” says Leslie-Ann Field, founder of Ice911. “Our first principle is to do no harm, right? But there’s also just this vast risk of doing nothing,” she says.

According to non-profit Silver Lining, the UNFCCC, which oversees international climate policy talks, could have a role in evaluating both the merits and risks of geoengineering research. The question still remains as to whether one entity, and which, would have the authority to sanction or prevent the deployment of climate intervention. The UN Security Council is one possibility, though with 15 member states, only five of which are permanent, gaining global consensus could be difficult. Meanwhile, scientists say they need regulations urgently for field research to forge ahead. “We need to phase in these technologies in ten years from now. We already know that,” says Riebesell. "That’s not much time to decide which of these options is useful. We shouldn’t wait another year. The science needs to start now.”

She Blew the Whistle on Pathogens That Escaped From a Government Lab. Now She’s Being Fired

A career scientist who works for the U.S. government is alleging that her supervisors have retaliated against her for sounding an alarm about biosafety and workplace hazards. Her lawyers claim that she has been unfairly targeted for complaining about a litany of issues at a government science research center since 2017, including requesting an investigation after an unknown quantity of pathogens were released from her organization’s biosafety laboratory into the second-largest body of water in Washington State.

Evi Emmenegger worked at the Western Fisheries Research Center (WFRC) in Seattle since 1996 until this January, when she was placed on administrative leave and served with a notice of proposed separation. The center is a branch of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), which studies natural resources and environmental and ecosystem health, water use, and Earth science.

Emmenegger managed an aquatic biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) lab, one of the few in the U.S. built for studying aquatic pathogens that pose a high risk to the environment. She also conducted research on fish diseases in a BSL-2 facility and the BSL-3 lab contained within it.

There are four biosafety levels for laboratories; BSL-4 is the highest security. BSL-4 labs have been used to study Ebola, variola (which causes smallpox), novel bird and swine flus, and other highly dangerous pathogens. BSL-3 labs have been used to study anthrax, SARS, MERS, West Nile virus, and yellow fever. Currently, the CDC is allowing BSL-2 labs to study the current SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus outbreak. To be clear, the WFRC studies pathogens that affect fish and other marine life.

“We allege that what's happened to Evi is a pretext to basically shut her up, and that that pretext is illegal retaliation in violation of the Whistleblower Protection Act,” said Jeff Ruch, the Pacific director for Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER). The organization is representing Emmenegger in a whistleblower challenge to her proposed removal.

“She's worked at the lab now for almost 28 years, and prior to 2017, had a spotless personnel record. After she started making these reports in 2017, as a report details, there were a whole series of things where it appeared to be a downward spiral,” Ruch said.

Internal correspondence and official documents from the WFRC reveal internal strife and a decline in facility conditions to the point of malfunction and danger to personnel. Emails between Emmenegger and other WFRC employees, as well as the results of the scientific integrity investigation into the 2017 pathogen leak obtained via a public records request, were shared with Motherboard. In a statement, USGS Western States Communications Chief Catherine Puckett wrote, “The USGS is aware of the PEER allegations and treats all employees’ concerns related to animal welfare, biosafety as well as occupational health and safety seriously. The USGS investigated these allegations thoroughly and determined there was no violation of scientific integrity regarding the complaint associated with the Western Fisheries Research Center. Even though there was not a loss of scientific integrity, several recommendations were made to improve the biosafety program, quarantine procedures for animals, and automated building control systems. These recommendations have been or are in the process of being implemented.”

USGS did not make employees available for interviews, including Emmenegger. In an email, USGS Acting Public Affairs Officer Karen Armstrong said that the organization does not comment on personnel matters.

The WFRC is considered “a national and international resource for research on fish disease,” according to the center’s website. The facilities contain two large BSL-2 labs and a smaller BSL-3 lab where scientists study aquatic pathogens and raise fish and amphibians.

All water used for animal rearing or experiments is collected in a large tank, where it is meant to be chlorinated for about an hour to kill the pathogens, then dechlorinated and released into wetlands that lead into Lake Washington. The chlorine levels were checked on January 17, 2017. The next time they were checked on June 19, 2017, there was no chlorine in the wastewater, indicating the water had not been adequately treated to kill any pathogens in it.

“The point of these containment labs is to contain the pathogens. The fact they weren't being contained is as basic as you could get,” Ruch said.

Findings of a scientific integrity report

Emmenegger first heard about the pathogen leak in August—two months after it was reported at an animal care meeting—but she first raised concerns over the wastewater, or effluent, over a year earlier.

At a July 2016 biosafety and biosecurity training, Emmenegger told WFRC Director Jill Rolland and others present that current standard operating procedures (SOP) for monitoring chlorine levels should be reevaluated.

According to the action items from that 2016 meeting, Emmenegger said, “I believe monitoring the post-treatment chlorine levels every 3-months is not enough and puts us at a greater risk for having an accidental environmental/pathogen release that could directly impact the adjacent wetlands that receives our de-chlorinated treated effluent.”

When she found out about the pathogen release in the summer of 2017, Emmenegger confronted her supervisor, Fish Health Section Chief Maureen Purcell. The next day, Purcell sent Emmenegger an email about the incident from her perspective.

“In summary, the problem was identified, actions were taken, appropriate personnel and committees were informed and the issue was documented,” Purcell wrote. “Yesterday in the hall you made several comments that I will paraphrase as: ‘That is good that you have covered your ass.’ and ‘This is going to look bad when it gets out’. I do not understand why you are making these statements as I feel the center’s response to this issue was in line with our policies.”

In an email sent the same day, Emmengger replied, “I never stated you needed to ‘cover your ass’. I did state that this chlorination shutdown is going to look bad if it wasn't handled properly.”

On August 3, 2017—the next day— Emmenegger asked about resources for whistleblowers in an email to Christopher Cox, an administrative officer at the time. She wrote in part, “I need someone's help and advice, I've been so stressed and hardly sleeping because of these recent incidences [sic]. The whistle blower paperwork is overwhelming and I still need to run the BSL-3 laboratory. I'm scared and feel like I've got no one turn to.”

Two weeks before the six-week statute of limitations to make a complaint about the pathogen release would expire, Emmenegger began working with PEER, which helped her submit a complaint with the USGS Office of Science Quality and Integrity. The complaint alleged that Purcell and other managers engaged in scientific misconduct in their handling of incidents including the pathogen release. Over the next two years, PEER also filed public records requests for WFRC documents concerning the release and pressed for the Department of Interior to investigate the incident.

Ruch said that Emmenegger did not know the identities of the pathogens that other researchers in the BSL-2 lab were studying, but that some of the ones she worked with were “deadly.”

In the scientific integrity investigation report shared with Motherboard, an employee who worked in the BSL-2 lab whose name was redacted told investigators that only pathogens endemic to the Pacific Northwest were released, although their identity and quantity were unknown. In a write-up of their interview from January 2018, the employee is quoted as saying:

“RE: What happened when effluent got out? So the pathogens are endemic to west coast. If something new or different showed up in Lake Washington – everyone would have found out.”

USGS Scientific Integrity Officer Christopher Johnson closed the internal investigation into the pathogen release requested by Emmenegger in June 2019, concluding in his report that there was no loss of scientific integrity. In the determination section, though, he wrote that “the degradation of laboratory systems at WFRC happened gradually over the span of several decades. …The quality of science may have been adversely affected, but this does not appear to have been intentional or reckless.”

The pathogen release was not the only facility issue from 2017 onward that Emmenegger took to administrators, nor the only issue about which she clashed with Purcell. She also alleged that the working conditions inside the aquatic BSL-3 lab she managed were dangerous to researchers. This complaint was corroborated in emails by other scientists who worked in the lab.

On a Saturday in April 2017, months before she learned of the BSL-2 wastewater issue, Emmenegger fainted in the BSL-3 lab after working for many hours uninterrupted in the space. She later wrote that she may have also been dehydrated at the time.

The lab was built to handle exotic and invasive fish pathogens that could pose a risk to native species if released into the environment. As a BSL-3 lab, it possessed an airlock and a ventilation system that pumped more air out than it let in, creating negative air pressure in the room.

But the tightly controlled environment in the lab led to air quality issues, and researchers reported dizziness, headaches, and respiratory ailments beginning in 2017.

Scientists Gael Kurath and Douglas McKenney felt unwell while conducting a full-day experiment in the aquatic BSL-3 lab in November 2017. According to notes that Kurath took on the day following the incident, their symptoms worsened when they sprayed bleach in the lab as part of a decontamination procedure.

“Air seems stagnant? Stale.” she wrote. “Doug – light headed, a little fuzzy, hard to describe, tired. Gael – need fresh air, needed a break, head dull. By 6:30 after bleaching, felt very ‘spent’, more tired than seemed appropriate for physical work. Head tired, dull.”

Inspectors from the University of Washington Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee mentioned the “moderate to significant” issue of poor air quality inside the BSL-3 lab in their 2017 report of routine lab inspections.

Due to the air quality, as well as another facility issue relayed by Emmenegger to her supervisor Purcell, then-USGS Regional Director Rich Ferrero decommissioned the aquatic BSL-3 lab in March 2018, prohibiting further experiments in it until the issues were resolved. To date, the lab has not been recommissioned. The USGS would not make Purcell available for an interview nor respond to specific questions sent by Motherboard.

Purcell sent a notice of proposed separation to Emmenegger on January 29, 2020 because Emmenegger did not submit a scientific manuscript for publication in the 2019 fiscal year, which was one of her job duties.

Ruch, one of the PEER lawyers representing Emmenegger, said that the notice was “incredibly flimsy and passive aggressive.”

“It's fair to say that the details laid out in this case show a sick management culture at USGS,” he said.

Emmenegger and Purcell clashed since Purcell’s appointment as Fish Health Section chief in 2017, and Emmenegger requested that all their correspondence be written or in person only with a third party present.

In communications with Purcell and Rolland, Emmenegger said that she was “stressed and anxious” in Purcell’s presence and “scared to voice [her] concerns.”

Later that year, in August, Emmenegger emailed Rolland to request another supervisor, the second time she had done so. She said that she hid in a bathroom stall the prior week to avoid having a one-on-one dialogue with Purcell.

Rolland denied Emmenegger’s request, writing “I acknowledge that there is interpersonal conflict between you and Dr. Purcell from what I believe are differences in perspective rather than true managerial issues. I expect employees to treat each other professionally and with respect regardless of whether or not you like each other.”

Based on their fraught relationship, PEER responded to the proposed separation and argued that Purcell used Emmenegger’s annual evaluation as a pretext. Her Employee Proposal Appraisement Plan had been altered for that fiscal year where previously it had remained constant since 2009. After failing to meet the subtask of a critical component in her plan, Emmenegger was given 20 days to prepare a scientific manuscript and associated metadata; PEER’s response claims that this timeline set her up for failure.

Ruch said that Emmenegger will find out the result of her appeal within 30 days.

In an October 2019 email to leaders at USGS, Emmenegger said that she had been experiencing ongoing harassment by WFRC senior staff after reporting biosafety violations and animal welfare issues.

“I didn't want to be a whistleblower, but this situation was forced upon me after years of trying to communicate biosafety/animal welfare concerns. I would to like serve my last five years before I retire in supportive working situation doing research in the BSL-3 lab.”

How to Clean Up Safely After a Hurricane or Flood

Throughout Texas and Louisiana, Hurricane Harvey cleanup is underway. Florida, Georgia and the Caribbean islands are just starting to assess the damage from Irma, while the storm pushed north to flood Charleston, S.C. Hurricane Jose’s path is still uncertain, but one thing is true: If you’ve been hit by either of these--or any other storm--cleaning up can be a nightmare, and few resources tell you where to start.

Storm cleanup is different from regular, and even heavy duty, cleaning. There are hazards, health concerns and other issues that go beyond normal cleaning that require specialty products, tools and cleaning techniques, as well as protective gear and safety measures not required in regular cleaning. After a large storm and flooding, many belongings will be a total loss, but often there are unexpected treasures that survive that can be restored. Here are guidelines to follow for cleaning what can be salvaged.

Removing Water and Eliminating Mold: After a flood, removing water and drying everything out can be daunting. In addition to utility pumps for water removal, wet/dry vacuums like the ShopVac, and carpet and upholstery cleaners like the ones made by Rug Doctor and Bissell, can be used without cleaning solutions to extract water from both hard surfaces, like concrete and subflooring, and soft surfaces, like carpet and upholstery. For spot cleaning, a good wet mop will split the difference. Safety is a concern when handling any electric tools in a flooded area, and you should avoid using machines like the Rug Doctor if there is more than a half inch of standing water. Do not enter a flooded space unless you are sure the electricity is turned off.

After standing water has drained or been removed, dampness will persist, and along with that moisture will come mold, mildew and smells. Dehumidifiers, once the water is gone, can help keep the air at a comfortable humidity until you can make bigger repairs. Portable air-conditioning units (but not outdoor or ground-mounted central air units, which can be contaminated with silt) can also help reduce humidity and moisture levels in your home. If a dehumidifier or air-conditioner offers the feature, use the ‘extra dry’ setting. Both of these options are great while you get lingering moisture out of walls or flooring, or to finish dehumidifying your home once you’ve made those repairs. Carpet and upholstery cleaners can be used with a pre-mixed odor-eliminating solution or diluted white vinegar (if allowed by manufacturer instructions) to remove those damp, mildewy smells from your floors.

A bleach solution and scrub brush can be used to remove mold from hard surfaces; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers a reference guide to bleach-to-water ratios for use in disaster cleanup. When cleaning mold, it is important to wear protective gloves and N-95 (or better) masks, particularly if you suffer from respiratory issues or have a weakened immune system. Goggles are also recommended.

To treat moderate dampness and mustiness, desiccants and odor absorbers such as DampRid, silica, the Bad Air Sponge and activated charcoal-based products are all good choices. It’s also worth keeping in mind that even with all these tips, you still may want to get a professional mold test for your home--even the best efforts of individuals may not be enough, and you might need professional help. After Katrina, for example, some people needed expensive antimicrobial spraying equipment for their whole home. Do your best to clean up, then keep an eye, ear and nose out for spots on walls, smells, or inexplicable coughs.

Cleaning Waterlogged Laundry: Heavily soiled laundry requires special handling, and this is especially true in the case of heavy soiling caused by floodwater. Before doing any wash, ensure that the water supply is clean and uncontaminated, and that your laundry machines are safe to use. If they are not, head to your closest laundromat or dry cleaners. If access to laundromats or dry cleaners is an issue, check to see if corporate disaster relief services, such as Tide’s Loads of Hope program, or volunteer laundering services, like Ladies Who Launder (and Men Too…), are available in your area.

Prepping and Choosing Items for Laundering: Start by taking the heavily soiled laundry outside to rinse wet or muddy items off using a hose, or place them into a utility sink for pre-rinsing if outdoor space is not available.

Allow the items to dry, ideally in the sun, to help prevent mildew from developing, then shake out and brush off any dirt and mud that remains after the initial rinse.

To ensure safe handling of contaminated textiles, wear gloves, and consider the use of goggles and/or a mask or a respirator. The C.D.C. recommends disposing of items that have been exposed to sewage spills and groundwater runoff, as well as things like pillows, plush toys, or clothing that have been in floodwater for an extended period of time.

Machine Washing Instructions: When laundering heavily soiled textiles, it’s important to check the water during the rinse cycle to make sure the items are clean. Multiple wash cycles may be needed to fully remove soil and other contaminants. Many washing machines offer an extra rinse cycle, which is helpful to use with those really dirty clothes or sheets. Fine or vintage items should be washed using the delicate cycle, or hand washed in very hot water (wear protective gloves if you’re handwashing). A boiling pot may be required to fully disinfect delicate items that cannot withstand the agitation of a washing machine, though you risk shrinking them that way.

For disinfecting clothes or other laundry, use the hottest water setting that is safe for the fabric type. Provided they are safe to be used in laundry per the manufacturer’s instructions, add pine oil disinfectants such as Pine-Sol or Lestoil, or phenolic disinfectants like Lysol, or chlorine bleach, at the start of the wash cycle.

Once your items are thoroughly cleaned, they may go into a dryer--but not before, as the heat will set stains into soiled textiles. To reverse lingering dinge or yellowing, consider Engleside Restoration, especially for antique or vintage textiles like quilts and ceremonial clothing, such as baptismal or wedding dresses, you want to save.

Navigating Safety and Insurance Concerns: For your safety when working in wet conditions, wear rubber or insulated footwear, and again, do not enter a flooded space unless you are sure the electricity is turned off. If your home has natural gas service, check for gas leaks before using electrical equipment in your home, including lights. If you have a gas grill, have your canisters checked by a professional before you try using them again.

The Environmental Protection Agency recommends wearing gloves and other protective equipment in post-flood conditions, including respirators and goggles. Similarly, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has a safety guide to follow before you walk into a flood-damaged home. If you want to brave returning to your home before the water has fully receded, do so only with the proper equipment.

Your protective gear should be suited to the materials you’ll handle, such as heavy duty work gloves for handling debris, and natural rubber, neoprene, or polyurethane or PVC gloves for use with disinfectants like chlorine bleach. Household gloves can be used when working with milder detergents and cleaners.

Snakes and other wildlife will also be a concern, so use caution when working in flooded areas. The American Red Cross recommends employing a wooden stick to turn over upended items that might harbor critters, as well as for scaring away snakes and for moving potentially-live electrical wires. Additionally, floodwater and mud will make flooring slick, creating slip-and-fall hazards.

When it comes to insurance claims, it is ideal to have photographs or video of both the interior and exterior of homes, automobiles, boats, etc. before the damage occurred to show their previous condition. Regardless of whether pre-storm photos and videos are available, photos and videos documenting the damage should be taken before cleanup efforts begin. If receipts are available, they should be preserved. Taking a photo of an item with the receipt of its purchase side by side makes providing proof after a loss to an insurer more likely to result in a successful claim.
