S4 Trailer analysis

You wanted analyses? Well, here you go!

I don’t pretend to see everything and know everything; I’m just sharing with you my interpretation and my thoughts (and a lot of my excitment too).

I already did this kind of “analysis” for all the clips of the first episode of season 2, so if you already read them, it’s clearly the same kind of thing.

Anyway, hope you’ll enjoy!

I don’t want to take to much time with the date changing color because a lot of people already talked about it. Just, it’s really symbolic to pass the 9th April from yellow to white to say that this date is long gone; and then showing the 3rd September in yellow to say that it’s the new date.

ANYWAY! Let’s get into it!

Okay, first row of quick extracts:

First shot and we have a worried Amira, walking alone. “The season is about her and the problems she needs to deal with, alone”, that’s clearly what they’re telling us here. (I love this light scarf btw)

Okay, first I thought she was smoking and I was like “EXCUSE ME? What the hell is happening?” but then I just opened my eyes and breathed again. We have Cris, maybe Viri in the background? The two other hands I’m like “I don’t know but maybe Eva/Joana and Lucas?”.

We have Amira in the middle of the shot, as if the world was turning around her, but she’s not “a part of it” you know? She again clearly seems worried. We understand here that she doesn’t feel that comfortable in her group of friends.

Finally, we see our queen SMILING! I kind of feel that the entire trailer is composed by parallels between two worlds (like for the poster of the season). We were with the girl/boy squad and now we have a new character that I suppose to be a girl from Amira’s association (the “morocco” poster). We also were with a group and here there’s something more intimate with only one person. The colors were cold, here they’re warm. Clearly, this shot is here in opposition, in contrast, with the one before (AND DAMN I’M HERE FOR THAT).

Amira alone again, it closes the loop and the first “row of quick extracts”. She seems confident, maybe she does her makeup or something?

Oh, I haven’t said it yet, but GOD ALL THOSE SHOTS ARE *chef kiss*.

“I know we said we'd see each other. / I know we accorded a meeting.” when the old date appears, come on… Stop being so amazing would you? Plus, the fact that she starts talking when the dates appear is just the kind of small details in the editing that I love.

Okay… We’re back here. I first wanted to compare the two trailers, but it seems that they removed the old one… so, let’s use my messy memory.

Amira is confident, looking straight to the camera, even a small (really small) smile/smirk, but the chin still a little down, so… I have mixed feelings about this shot (confident but not THAT much).

Anyway, I think they just wanted to connect the two trailers. Btw I think that anyway we were supposed to have a second trailer since we have the same shot? In the first trailer Amira is strong and confident about her beliefs and she’s even “angry” at all the comments she receives, but as we’ll see, in this trailer, she seems pretty lost.

Second row of extracts:

Lucas spilling his drink on Amira… I don’t know what it could mean, but since we kind of “know” what will happen, I would say that it’s another way to show the “I don’t know if I feel that accepted/comfortable in my group of friends anymore.”

Okay, THIS, this is brilliant. (Plus, I guess this is our Spanish Yousef? Ok, OK, he’s cute.)

Both boys in the same side of the shot with Amira’s back and both looking at her with heart-eyes and with a more than cute smile; well, it’s just brilliant to introduce them that way.

AND AGAIN, the shots are showed as parallels/opposition.

(I don’t know if this shot is an extend of the shot with Dani just before, because in a way, I think it could fit, I really don’t know. All I can say is that she’s opening the door at someone she doesn’t want to see.)

I think that all the quick extracts are in Amira’s head (the Amira who’s looking at us in the trailer). Because after seeing the boys, we have again Amira alone and, in her room, kind of thinking about all of this and even praying. I think that it’s a way to show us, the kind of guidance that her religion is for Amira; when she doubts, she turns toward it. I LOVE THAT. They’re showing us so many things.

“Sorry I stood you up / I'm sorry for not showing up.” when this face appears. Damn, she seems so lost, confused and scared… The mouth is falling, she doesn’t look at us anymore, the frown and her eyes… phew… I’m not ready to see her suffer…

If I keep my theory that this Amira is reacting to her own thoughts (the extracts), it clearly shows that the boys are confusing her, like, A LOT.

(Oh, and maybe if we try to fit the sentence with the shots, maybe she stood up one or the two boys?)

Third row of extracts:

I don’t know how to interpret this shot, but DAMN IT’S SO BEAUTIFUL. (Maybe it’s the Koran? So the symbolism of the religion is back)

Some Amiris content. I’m here for that, like, I’M HERE FOR THAT. Just a quick thought though. It’s like Amira is cheering up Cris (I’m not ready to see her also suffer).

Um… Is it from the same scene? Are we really gonna have a friendship between Amira and Alejandro? Damn Skam España, I’m not ready for that. Btw, I have nothing to say because it’s clear that they’re smiling and happy (Just, Alejandro with teary eyes, that’s cute).

A Mosque with a wonderful shot again, wow… We still have the really important place of religion in Amira’s life, and the fact that it shows up after some moments with her friends, and maybe her role of “advisor”? I like that.

And then we’re back at something “dark” and “negative” feelings. It seems that she’s doubting, scared? Just look at her eyes… (small parallel to s2 and Cris in the car)

Is it a symbolism that shows that even if there’s her friends and religion, she’s still troubled? Confused?

The more we progress in the trailer, the more we see Amira in distress… It’s so at the opposite from the first one when she was strong against all the comments. Here, all those thoughts are really invasive and are confusing her so much. Her eyes were closed and now she even covers them, she can’t hold all this pressure anymore.

Fourth row of quick extracts, which is clearly shorter than the others:

Okay, these three shots clearly need to be analyzed with each other. It’s kind of a mirror. We have Amiris, we have Amira-Cris-and the girl from the beginning (I guess?) and then we have Amira and again this girl (I’m really not sure).

The first picture, we have an Amiris hug but… it’s like Amira doesn’t want it? So maybe a not that positive moment?

The second picture, it seems like Amira is in the middle of a conversation between the new character and Cris. And again, it doesn’t seem like a “good moment” you know? Amira is like “My goodness what am I doing here? I don’t want to be here. Send help.” (pinched lips, raised eyebrows and a little too opened eye.) The new character is like “Sorry but, it doesn’t work like that” and Cris is like “Oh… I really don’t know what to say right now…” (not sad, but… lost?). It’s not an argument, but it’s not a calm nor joyous, nor friendly conversation you see?

The last shot is with the new character (I guess) taking pictures of Amira in an AMAZING place what the? I LOVE THAT.

What I’m trying to say with all of this is that in the first picture Amira doesn’t feel good with Cris, then we have kind of a ““conflict””, the moment when the two worlds collide, and then we have a positive (?) moment with the new character, but not Cris. Meaning that Amira is starting maybe to choose one of her two worlds? THIS IS SO INTERESTING AAAAAHHH.

Still a completely confused Amira here. She’s still talking while the extracts stop, maybe meaning that she’s completely overwhelmed.

Fifth row of extracts:

These two shots follow each other and we have a clearly happy Amira with Spanish Yousef.

We ALSO have a clearly happy Amira with Dani, which is YES a parallel with the two shots from before (interesting, Dani always shows up after the other boy).

“I needed time to process everything that's happened. / I needed time to process everything that has happened to me.” stops here.

“I needed time” was present while we had Cris and the other girl on screen. She needed time with her friends (most important friend) “to process what happened” with the two boys? With 6 pictures and a well-placed sentence, the producers show us one of the most important plot (I guess) of the season (a freaking love triangle, aaaaaaah).

A confused and clearly overwhelmed Amira here… As I said, the more we go through the trailer, the more we see a completely lost Amira.

Those are clearly judging eyes my girls (or at least, not understanding eyes? angry? disappointed?). Maybe it’s showing the fact that the girls are not going to help her? Are going to left her? (there’s not Cris here btw, good sign? I hope.)

And here the distress at its highest point… Teary eyes, her mother (I guess) holding her, since most of the time it’s Amira who’s holding and supportive everyone, it’s… har to watch (I’m going to cry so much with this season I’m not ready). An opposition? The girls are leaving, but her family is here for her?

To reinforce my theory that this Amira is thinking about the extracts is her looking to the right, it’s the sign of someone trying to remember or I don’t know, thinking about something.

Sixth row of quick extracts:

Amira’s reaction to Ruben coming to kiss her cheek is the entire fandom when a clip with him will show up. No but more seriously, I can’t wait to see this scene (and everything that his presence implies for Crisana/Croana, because, come on, why would they make him come back then?)

I AM NOT READY TO SEE THIS WONDERFUL WOMAN SUFFER.

This shot is beautiful… And I think it’s Amira and Dani up there. (I think it’s from the same clip than a another shot with Dani a little higher, in the fourth row of extracts.)

Again, these two shots are mirroring each other. Amira is talking with both boys and to be honest, I think that’s great, communication. (And come one… a talk on swings? Aaaaaaaah) Something I just noticed, for the first picture, it’s like Amira doesn’t want to talk with Spanish Yousef and he seems a little disappointed? (it’s like his smile/mouth is falling.)

I don’t have a lot to say here. Juts the fact that she’s silent and just remembering/thinking? about everything that happened.

Seventh and last row of quick extract:

It’s the first time we see Dani without a parallel with Spanish Yousef. And COME ON, the CLOSENESS. It’s clearly here to show the “tension”, the attraction between these two (even if clearly I think that everyone already noticed it).

Again, it’s an Amiris scene but… there’s this kind of tension here? Like none of them seems joyous or cheerful. Amira doesn’t smile, her face is closed, we could even say that she’s lost (and not sad but kind of? Maybe even annoyed?), while Cris has the “I don’t know what to do/say” face.

NOPE- NOPE. Take it back, I’m not seeing her suffer again. NO WAY.

More seriously, this scene seems so… powerful? It’s like the camera his turning around her, or at least, the camera is clearly moving and um… she’s alone in the shot? I don’t like what’s happening. The mouth is falling, the eyebrows are down, the eyes are teary, I think you all understand it, she’s worried, maybe even lost. I don’t see anger though; it’s just pure worry and I have this feeling that she’s ready to burst into tears? (I don’t know why, just a feeling I’ve got, deep down).

Plus, the fact that Joana is shown just after a shot with Cris? I don’t like it (I already said that no?). And also, not all the characters are shown in the trailer (the boys), is it meaning that she’ll have something important to do in the season? We’ll see guys, but I really can’t wait discover her storyline.

Dani and Amira, again. I think it’s from the same clip with Ruben and MAYBE the party with Lucas spilling his drinks.

Okay… I’m not confused, but almost. This parallel is… strange. We see Dani at the party, we see Spanish Yousef (btw I think it’s also coming from a scene we already saw some shots before) and now we have Dani again, but this time we see AMIRA (and omg this shot is so beautiful with her bringing her hand near Dani’s cheek).

I really don’t know how to interpret that because it seems like Dani is taking more space than Spanish Yousef in this sequence of extracts, especially with the fact that we see his back and Amira smiling at him, AND ESPECIALLY if I follow my thinking about being in her thoughts. Are they already telling us Amira’s choice? (I don’t think so, but, it’s interesting).

And then, AND THEN, we have THIS, and omg I love that. Nora with a supportive and understanding gaze, both girls holding hands, Amira being vulnerable and clearly lost… It’s… wow. Plus, the fact that the sequence of extracts stops with Amira confiding in a friend? (clearly showing that, even if all of this mess is happening around her, she will find someone to help or at least advise her) especially Nora? I love it, really. We all know the symbolism behind the Sana/Noora talk and if Skam Sspaña is really going to do THIS, I mean, it’s powerful.

The fact that she leaves the shot still confused shows us that there’s still a lot to come and that this trailer shows us nothing compared to what’s coming. I love that. Really.

And, “Should we meet up and I'll tell you about it? / What if we met and I tell you about it?" OOOOH, HELL YEAH, I’M HERE FOR THAT AMIRA!

More seriously, I like the fact that even if we have a clearly lost Amira in this trailer, the song closing the trailer says “I’m the boss”, showing that she’s going to be strong and that this season is gonna rock.

Soooo, what this trailer is telling us about season 4? SPOILER, it tells us A LOT of things.

We will have something with Amira not feeling accepted, or kind of having mixed feelings about the girl/boy squad; but she will also find new friends (aka the new girl character). Cris/Amiris will have an important role in this season since we saw her many times. We will see Amira’s life more in depth with her relation with religion, photography and we’ll also see her family (the hug with her mother). With Ruben and Joana’s worried face, I guess we’ll have to face some Crisana/Croana drama (wouhou). We will maybe also see Nora and her healing process after Miqhell (I really hope so). OF COURSE, we’ll see how Amira will deal with her feelings for two boys: Dani and Spanish Yousef (damn, if it’s not him, I think we’ll all be clowns).

And in a wider picture, we’ll see how a Muslim teenage girl is dealing with her emotions, her life problems, and her identity during ten WONDERFUL weeks.

Phew… It was long to write all of this. I surely missed A LOT of things, and a lot of ideas will come to me in the next two weeks (stay tune I might reblog and write some stuff), but it’s really something I wanted to write right now since this trailer is really amazing.

Plus, just something to conclude. The trailer is here to build the hype. Remember, they know that we know the storyline. They clearly can “““bait””” us, and try to make us see things that are completely different from the actual season. So, stay critical. But anyway, they did an amazing job with this trailer and I think we’re gonna have a wonderful last season for Eskam.

T or Y with Rory and Arcade?

already did Y and I now have 2 requests for T (an obscure AU) so here goes. idk how Obscure~ this is but like gimme a break i’m old and confused ok? thanks xD

“Let’s try again. Pecunia et gloria animum viri boni superabant. If you just pick out the words you can identify, we can work from there.”

Arcade Gannon had been tutoring a woman in his class, Rory Wood, for nearly two hours, for what seemed like the thousandth such session. Though both seniors in college, Rory was still on first-semester Latin, whereas Arcade had already finished up his Classics capstone. He just needed a few more tutoring hours to finish up his graduation requirements--but Rory needed to pass the class, period.

The two of them had seldom crossed paths before she’d started attending his tutoring sessions. It was a small campus, but their majors were on opposite sides of it, and their social circles rarely intersected. Despite their differences, they were on good terms--even though Rory hated Latin.

“Dude, you’re wasting your time,” she rolled her eyes, tearing a sheet from her notebook and crumpling it in her hands before throwing it against the wall. “I’m on track for a D in this class at best. I appreciate your time and everything, but--”

“Let me put it this way,” he cut her off, “I still need service credit to graduate. You’re in danger of failing Latin. I have to be here anyway, so we might as well say we tried.”

“Or,” she suggested, “and hear me out, we could fuck off to the student center and get some cheesy bread and play Pac-Man, and I’d tell Dr. Rabalais you tried your best with me.”

“I think he’d figure out you were full of it when he saw your score on the midterm,” Arcade replied dryly. “Page 48--”

“Hey, not your fault I’m hopeless, is it?”

“You’re not hopeless,” he disagreed, “But, uh, why are you taking Latin, anyway? You don’t seem to enjoy it, and it’s not required for anything but Classics majors.”

Rory sighed. “It’s whatever. There was this cute girl...I thought she’d think I was...smart, I dunno. It doesn’t matter. I’m in it now, and past the drop period. I’m pretty good at accepting my fate, though! Which is why I’m just saying, I’ll buy the cheesy bread if you--”

“Forget it,” Arcade cut her off. “Pecunia et gloria--”

“Sounds like the sisters from Hocus Pocus.”

“What? No. That’s--that’s Winnifred, Mary--nevermind. Okay, you know what? I’ll even give you a hint. One of those words has an English cognate. Can you tell me which one?”

Rory drummed her fingers on the desk. “Uh. Pecunia?”

“You had a 50-50 shot there,” he sighed, “It’s gloria.”

“Oh. So, like, Glory.”

“Great! Wonderful,” Arcade nodded with vigorous encouragement. “Okay, so, what and glory?”

“Um...” Rory looked as anxious as she did lost. “I don’t--I don’t really--”

All of a sudden, Arcade’s face lit up with a brilliant idea. “Hang on a second. You like Lana del Rey, right?”

“Oh, yeah, definitely,” Rory nodded, “but I’m pretty sure she doesn’t speak Latin.”

"Nevermind. There’s a song of hers--what...and glory?”

“Oh--wait, money? Or power?”

“Money!” cried Arcade with relief. “You’ve got the first bit of the sentence.”

“Oh, shit, really?” Rory’s voice rose with surprise and excitement, “Okay, cool! Now what?”

“Money and glory...and, what are they doing? Or rather, what did they do? I’m giving you a hint, there.”

Rory fell silent as she pondered the question. Before Arcade could push her any further, though, he was surprised to see her eyes filling with tears.

“Um--” he began, “--are you--are you o--”

“I’m fine,” she snapped as she removed her glasses, frantically wiping her eyes, “I’m just fine. Don’t worry about it. Uh. Can you just--can you tell me which word is the verb, here?” Her voice rose in pitch and speed as she tried to stabilize its shaking.

Arcade closed the Latin textbook and took out his cell phone instead, flipping through a few pages before finding the one he was looking for.

“Hey,” he said gently to his friend, “did you see the meme someone made of Dr. Rabalais on the Class of 2016 page yet?”

Rory laughed through a sniffle. “Yeah,” she replied, “It was me.”

Arcade squinted at the page. “Oh, shit, it was you. My bad,” he laughed.

Neither of them spoke for a few minutes, both of them silently scrolling their cell phones as Rory regained her composure.

Finally, she broke the silence. “I’m not actually stupid, you know,” she said quietly.

“I know that!” Arcade insisted, and he meant it. Latin was a difficult class that he knew his new friend had taken on a whim, and she was certainly not the first person he’d tutored to be driven to tears by the ancient tongue. For whatever reason, Arcade himself had a gift for it--but for most, it did not come so naturally.

“Look, you’re not the first Latin student I’ve had who ended up crying. I try to tell myself it’s not me, it’s Cato...but, nevermind. This is literally all you need to graduate, right? You’ve gotten all your other requirements out of the way?”

“Yep,” Rory confirmed, “Exactly. And the last credit I need to walk the stage is the hardest class I’ve ever taken in my life. Serves me right, I guess, for chasing girls.”

“If I said I’d never made a questionable decision to impress some guy, I’d be a liar,” Arcade sighed. “But, no. You’re not stupid.” After a moment’s pause, he added, “Could you just be hungry, though? I know I’m not at my top Latin translation efficiency when I’m seeing stars from lack of nutrients. Weirdly, though, it seems to help with Greek.”

Rory checked the time on her phone and immediately rose to her feet. “Come on. Student Center closes in 15 minutes. If we hustle, we can still get the cheesy bread.”

“Compromise,” Arcade suggested as he packed his laptop into his bag, “Yes, cheesy bread, then finish the homework on the couches under that hideous Chihuly sculpture?”

“Deal,” she laughed, “Make sure you have your OneCard. I’m not responsible for you getting locked in or out.”

NB: Based heavily on my own experiences taking Latin on a whim to impress a crush, regretting it nearly instantly, and some sights and foods from my alma mater. (Hey! That’s also Latin!) I ended up meeting one of my absolute dearest to-this-day friends because she tutored me in Latin, and yes, food helped the inevitable tears during such sessions!

I didn’t fare much better than Rory in Latin, ultimately switching my Classics major to a minor, but at least I got my suffering out of the way freshman year. :)

today’s installment of the mouths of babes

we’ve kind of settled into a routine of like... the Required Schoolwork happens on the computer one at a time with MathMom

and I do workbooks or whatever with whichever kid isn’t working with her

and while the Required Schoolwork is probably hitting the basic uhhh... ok like if educational requirements were the Food Pyramid, whatever those are

mostly what I’m doing is giving them practice doing basic reading and writing in the guise of the fun workbooks and also writing letters.

My own mother has been the best correspondent, sending each child a postcard every week or so. Girl, 5, has written back pretty faithfully. Boy, 7, is much harder for me to wrangle into writing, but he’s eager to please with the workbooks. He and I work together less often; his online assignments are more time-consuming. Today I let him cut out paper shapes because the workbook had a thing on lines of symmetry and he really obviously wanted to play with scissors, and I thought, anything that improves his fine motor skills is a huge positive. I did get him to do a fair amount of reading, as well, and while he’s really fond of wildly guessing what a word is based on a single letter (not necessarily its first letter), if you can get him to focus he is perfectly capable of reading, so the more he’s motivated to practice that, the better.

The girl is pretty good at writing letters, and will focus and do it if that’s what I suggest. So today we wrote to her paternal grandparents. I’ve discovered that if I use a ruler and draw lines about an inch apart on a sheet of blank typing paper, she’ll write really legibly and fill the sheet. I’ve also discovered that if I just let her spell things how she wants, she mostly does a reasonable and cute job? so I offer to write down complicated words for her that are relevant to what she’s going to want to write about, and offer occasional corrections if I think it’s important, but what I mostly do is take a little sheet of paper and write down a transcription of what she’s writing as she says it out loud to sound things out, so that I can enclose that to her correspondent, so they can be sure to respond to what she really said in the letter. I just feel like that’s more rewarding for her, and if I were getting earnest heartfelt letters from a kindergartner, I sure as hell would appreciate a transcription from someone familiar with her thought processes!

So to her grandfather, who is in Lower Manhattan confined to an apartment, she wrote, “Stars! I hope you serviv the viris love you grandpa [lastname]”, and drew a half a page full of stars to go along with it. (I enclosed a transcription and also the explanation that clearly, we’re talking about it where she can hear, but like, she’s too smart for us to lie about it so yeah, she knows everyone’s worried and it’s particularly dangerous in New York City. I also pointed out that the only two words I helped her spell or sound out at all were “stars” and [lastname]. No, she can’t spell her own last name, and I’ve worked on it with her before; when I mentioned this to her, she said, verbatim, “I rarely use it.” LOL you can tell her family’s got hilarious speech patterns.) Then she said, out loud, to me, “but I don’t know what grandpa looks like?” and I said “he visits all the time? Your dad’s dad?” and she said “ohhh you mean [his first name]”, which I thought was so hilarious that I also wrote that to him.

I’m in a better mood today; partly because they were well-behaved today, and because in working with them I was able to really notice that they’ve improved hugely in their reading and writing, and even if they come out of this whole nonsense traumatized (like a lot of kids are gonna be) they’ll also come out of it literate, which is huge for their future academic successes. They’d been worrying the boy’s got a touch of his dad’s dyslexia, as he’s rather behind the benchmarks, but it’s become clear he just needed more attention than his mother or teacher was able to give him, and now that there’s no choice but to give him one-on-one attention, he’s really past that crisis and will probably be caught up perfectly well to most of his classmates by the end of this. Which is fantastic. He badly, badly wants to see his friends, but he’s such a sunshine kid he’s mostly doing fine. The girl, well, this isn’t helping her anxiety and codependence, but she’s also gone from not reading well at all to very clearly competent at it. So, good.

I also got to do some cooking, which is a thing i like; the diet here is just... slightly off from what I’m used to, and it was good to make something familiar.

And, I heard from my coworker. The camera store managed to get one of those small-business grants, so they can reopen when it’s allowed. In the meantime, there are things that I could do working from home, if I stop by the store and pick up some materials, so maybe I’ll do that next week, and the fact that I still haven’t heard back from the dep’t of labor about my fucking unemployment won’t matter as much. Moreover, this means that going forward I could do more remote work, which would make my stupid fucking part-time commute to the farm actually possible.

That’s assuming they need/want me, of course! I don’t know the situation at the farm well enough to even really predict what’s going to go on, there. The first chicken slaughter is the last week of May. It’s possible they won’t want/need me since I’d be coming from such a distance and then would have to isolate afterward. I don’t know what the responsible thing to do is. I miss them, and feel isolated from them, because I am, and I just don’t know what’s going on.

But I feel a little more... IDK, hopeful, after that conversation.

Also Dr. F had some free time and wasn’t exhausted, tonight, so he played some Witcher 3 and MathMom kept saying ‘hair... so fluffy’ of Geralt, which was hilarious. Several power-ups were achieved but what amused me most was that Geralt upgraded his boots and gambeson, from the extremely stylish but low-stats set he starts off the game in, and the newer stuff has better stats but looks scruffy as hell. “He’s just getting comfortable,” Dr. F said.

Skam España season 3 obviusly has a problem

For many people its the absense of Norandro, for me, its the lack of conflict.

I think if there were more conflict within the story besides Nora slowly falling into a toxic relationship, Norandro fans would be more forgiving towards the erasure of a character that was supossed to be fundamental for the season.

So far Nora's story has had two fundamental conflicts, the ongoing one about Miquel (that gets tiring after 3 episodes cause you just want her to snap out of Miquel's control) and the one with Viri and the money (that happens and its resolved within one episode (or one and half maybe?)

The thing is, i understand why they've dragged the toxicity for so long, it would loose impact if Nora had a two week toxic relationship, and that kind of story could work for a show that puts out complete episodes where whole weeks past in a same episode instead of clips. But with a show like skam, even if your timeline makes sense with the story you are trying to built and tell, it makes the pacing boring and it feels repetitive to look at your phone day after day to see Nora pushed away from her friends and autonomy a little further each clip.

If they wanted to keep alejandro away they had a simple solution right there, and they wasted it.

NORA HAS A FREAKING SISTER

And what for?

In the first episode when she was introduced and Nora was so clearly affected by her presence in the house i thought that was a subplot i would love for them to explore, how is it to be the "perfect'c daughter" and still be a shadow, what is it like to be the older sister to your older sister, does Nora resent her for everything she puts Nora through when she gets drunk and dissapears, is there a reason for that behaviour or does Emma just like to party? Is she so far in she maybe needs rehab or is it something she is in complete control of?

You have a whole lot of story right there, within one character, and whole bunch of plot to fill out and yet you choose to do nothing with it.

Imagine a skam season where part of the conflict is sibling relationships? It didnt happen in the og and it would have been a wonderful addition. I think Skam España falls into an error someone here on tumblr (or maybe on facebook) told me when the season was just starting.

They built their story around the message they were trying to tell instead of building both of those paralled, so we end up with a great message, but an ok story and i think thats sad cause out of all the skams i think Skam España has one of the best dialogue and a lot of potential.

Nora's story could've been great without Alejandro in her season, it was after all Nora's season not Norandro's, but the writters failed to fill all the gaps they left by removing the og storyline.

Finished reading “A Relíquia” by Eça de Queirós.

My dad’s been trying to get me to read this one for years now, saying I’d love it. And he was right, of course (again).

I did enjoy it quite a lot. It’s definitely not on the level of his more famous books (especially os Maias and O Crime do Padre Amaro), but contains all the Eça staples of incredibly descriptive writing, biting social commentary, ranting against the catholic church, and being genuinely funny. So if you’re reading it for those, you’ll get them in spades.

Story-wise there’s not much, though. 2/3 of the book follow our main character as he deals with his ultra religious aunt and travels to the Holy Land in the hopes of finding something to impress her so he can inherit her fortune. He’s greedy, mostly immoral, and not that interesting as a character.

The middle third, as I’ve mentioned before, follows the same main character as he gets transported via dream sequence to biblical Jerusalem to witness the Passion.

It comes out of nowhere and feels pretty weird at first, but I can honestly say it’s my favorite part of the book. Mainly because Eça gets to stretch out a bit and paints such a beautifully vivid picture of the place that he makes me want to go there. (I do enjoy some purple prose when it’s well done)

The rest of it is ok, and contains all the funny parts, but to me felt a bit repetitive after a while.

I’d definitely recommend it if you enjoy his other work, or just find the premise of this interesting.

Fair warning though: It’s a 19th century book written by a european guy that takes place in the middle east, so it obviously contains its fair share of orientalist tropes. Bring your pith helmet. Or cork helmet, as the case may be.

Honestly I lost all the skam emotions on Skam France since their season 4 then I saw because the OG cast but damn I hated s5 and I can barely watch awake s6 (plus s5 and s6 are a disrespect for their minorities) any the s7 kinda saw it whenever I remembered and was OK, don't get me wrong I'm a filming student and I can recognize the cinematography, editing and more and that on any season past or new crew has let dawn the writing and script care other story BUT even if lamifex is cool for me already lost the SKAM feeling, and like your last anon said is getting boring, is not that exiting even knowing this season theme is a good one.

Yeah I get that. I mean I wrote this think piece about skamfr and druck. I said if druck is their writers then skamfr is their cast. Skamfr’s writing team prior to s6 just murdered the love for the show. I recognize this is a new team and they are trying and this team makes interesting choices but its like mind over matter association. I think this particular theme may be one of the most important theme’s touched in the skamverse and we got it very lightly with Viri in Espana so am happy for it to go deeper in skamfr. I mean much respect for their director because I think a big reason last season wasnt boring as hell was because she refreshed the watching experience it felt different and new. I do think tho if this season is successful i could easily see them go two more seasons. I will say this season has me excited not just because its a moc season but I think poverty particularly after covid is such an important topic. I get you anon I do but the topic is very intriguing for me.

Alejandro starts to notice Hugo's heart eyes for Viri and is very confused as to why it bothers him so much. Maybe its because Alejandro considers Viri a friend and is just being protective of her. Or maybe its because Viri seems to also be giving Hugo heart eyes back. It definitely has nothing to do with the fact that Alejandro wishes he was at the end of those looks. That he was the one with all of Viri's attention. This is bad but reading your stuff makes me want to write things too.

This makes me so happy! And it’s not bad at all, I’m very happy that I’m in a tiny way making you want to write it too!! Hope you don’t mind I wrote something about this...

It’s been a good night. If Viri is being completely honest with herself, it’s been a good few months. Things are starting to feel somewhat organized, going her way for once. And it has nothing to do with the time she’s spending with Alejandro. Or Hugo.

Hugo is a friend, an amazing, funny, cute, trustworthy friend and Viri knows they’re just friends because of her, he’s probably the perfect guy, but that’s not how feelings work.

And then there’s Alejandro too. Who’s just as funny, cute, trustworthy...

Most of the time, even when they are just hanging out, talking, somehow they end up in bed, together, cuddling like an actual couple, which they aren’t. Sometimes Viri thinks Alejandro is just using her and their similar family situations. Sometimes they talk about it, their families, but Alejandro goes quiet all of a sudden and so Viri doesn’t really like forcing him to talk more either. It’s a good feeling to know he trusts her with such intimate problems.

She checks her phone one more time. No new messages. She’s enjoying herself tonight, actually proud of the cheerleader outfit she created, but it would be cool to have Alejandro here too for once. They don’t have to kiss or show anyone what they sometimes have between them, but they could talk and have fun together for once.

Hugo knocks on the bathroom door and asks “Are you ok?”

And Viri has to laugh, he’s actually waiting for her so she quickly fixes her hair, putting it higher at the top of her head again and puts her phone away, finally opening the door to find a tall and always smiley Hugo, offering her beer back.

“I thought you had left already.”

“I had your beer, said I was going to hold it for you and so I did.” He shrugs and she smiles as a thank you, thinking they should be heading back to the party now, but Hugo looks around and then back to her. “Alejandro is here.”

Her heart starts beating faster and she feels all her nerves coming back to the surface instantly. Hugo doesn’t know that she and Alejandro kissed a few times - more than one hundred times at this point - but he’s the only one that saw them talking already, and how it’s different from before. Hugo is not dumb either.

“Oh.” That’s all she can say, too scared to say another word and let her feelings show in it.

“Yeah…”

“It’s okay, let’s go dance again!” Viri holds him by his wrist and drags them back to the party. She can’t assume Alejandro is there for her, he can be with his friends, just wanting to enjoy the party too.

Everyone is still on the dance floor, getting drunker and drunker by the second and Viri tries to keep her eyes in her friends, not looking around, looking for someone else. Jorge is the one to turn around and hug Alejandro first. He was looking at Viri while he came closer, smiling big when Jorge turned around and everyone made a huge fuss to welcome him.

Alejandro crossed their circle to come to hug Viri tightly and everyone looked at them, at how Viri had to walk back while Alejandro led her further away from the others.

“You look beautiful.” He says in her ear and Viri has to put her arms around him to regain some balance when they finally stop, a few steps from their group.

“Thank you. Are you ok?” She asks because she wants to hear it from him if there’s something wrong, but she can tell he’s drunk. He wouldn’t be hugging her like this in public if he wasn’t.

“Fucking amazing. Are you and Hugo hooking up again?”

He moves his head so they’re finally able to see each other, but still way to close for the others not to think it’s weird.

“What? You keep asking me this...No, we’re not.” Viri puts her hands in his waist, trying to create a minimum distance between them. Alejandro doesn’t want a relationship, clearly, and he has no right to pop in and out of her life whenever he feels like it.

Alejandro sighs, slowly letting his arms slip away from her neck, putting his hands inside his jeans pockets, looking at her. “I keep thinking you two are.”

“Why do you ask?”

He shrugs dramatically, clenching his jaw like he always does, avoiding to answer her question and Viri doesn’t feel like worrying about this right now.

“Let’s go dance with the others, come on.” Before she can walk past him, Alejandro sighs again, gently holding her arm, stopping in front of her.

“I’m jealous, that’s why. Please don’t hook up with him. I know I can’t ask you shit, but please…”

Viri looks over his shoulder, at everyone still watching them like it’s the weirdest scene watching the two of them talking. “What are we doing?” She asks, trying to ignore everyone else, looking at Alejandro.

“I don’t know, but I’m willing to find out.” Viri’s hand is freezing, it has been freezing since Alejandro pulled her aside to talk and so she’s very aware when his hand quietly slips from her forearm to her hand, holding it so gently.

SKAM ESPAÑA SEASON 1 EPISODE 1

Sooo.... Here we go! If you’re wondering what is this crazy girl doing writing these long ass posts about episodes of a TV show that aired a year ago... Well, I explained everything here, I also analysed the Trailer, I know that in the website it looks like the first clip, so if you’re wondering why it doesn’t match, that’s your answer.

This is gonna be full of spoilers for seasons 1 and 2 because it’s impossible for me to watch it and not add all of that baggage, sorry. I’m going to do this clip by clip because I think it’s the most organized way of going about it, although I also thought about doing character by character... If you think it’s better that way, let me know. I’m also going to compare it to the OG and the other remakes and, no, it’s not because I think Skam España is the “superior remake” or whatever people call it, it’s because they are so different in so many ways it’s difficult to compare.

SKAM ESPAÑA SEASON 1 EPISODE 1 “LAS RARAS DEL INSTITUTO” “THE HIGH SCHOOL WEIRDOS”

CLIP 1 ➡ SUMMER AGAIN

So, after all of that, we get the first clip, with Jorge, Lucas and Eva hanging out on the stairs after a day at the swimming pool, I love that they tease each other, they feel like an amazing group of friends, none of them feels isolated until Eva and Jorge start kissing and Lucas just leaves because no one likes being the third weal.

I really like how they make Lucas feel part of the group, it’s not Eva and Jorge and Jorge and Lucas, it’s Lucas, Eva and Jorge, but Eva and Jorge have sex with each other.

I don’t have too much to say about this clip, it’s a nice introduction to their dynamic, with Jorge always trying to reason with Eva and to reassure her by saying that everything is gonna be OK wile teasing her and making her laugh and Eva being scared and allowing herself to believe Jorge.

CLIP 2 ➡ ALONE

In this clip we get the mandatory slow motion walk of the Ingrid character, Inés in this case, and she at least just looks at Eva, with so much superiority she’d make an elephant feel small, but she doesn’t insult her or show her the finger. What a good way to start the school year!

Here we meet the boy-squad. I love that we get introduced to them in the first season, they all have such a chaotic energy, laughing at Hugo’s bad luck and making plans for the next big party.

I really like how much they actually wanted Eva to go to the concert, and that, if you think about it, they probably got the tickets before her and Jorge started dating, so it’s not that they didn’t tell her but that they didn’t think about her that way, not yet.

I also really like how understanding Eva is about all of this, she doesn’t get mad, she just basically accepts it and encourages Jorge and the boys to go and have fun and not worry about her.

I feel so much for Eva here, it’s really relatable how out of it Eva seems, she knows these boys, they all know her, they like her, but she is not part of the group, she isolates herself and doesn’t participate in the conversation, she tries at the beginning, but she can’t help feeling that these are her boyfriend’s friends, not hers. I love how this clip ends with the boys being loud and blocking her form their little circle without realizing it and with her being quiet and accepting it.

CLIP 3 ➡ THE NEW GIRL

Here we get the introduction of faux-Noora, but it’s not what I love the most about this clip. We get so much information about Amira in the background, people whispering about her because she hasn’t worn the hijab ever before and they think it’s weird. I love that we get this bit of info and that we see what our hacker queen must go through every day.

About Lara I’ll only say how relatable this whole thing is, I have a friend who says that you have to choose carefully who you talk to on the first day of school because you’ll never talk to them again and to be weary of people who come and talk to you on the first day because they’re probably just looking for someone to explain them the dynamics before they find their real place within the school/work environment/whatever.

CLIP 4 ➡ FRIENDS

I love when Skam posts clips like this, just the character in their room, doing absolutely nothing. She is scrolling through Instagram and eating some crackers. Her mom tells her to get off the phone and that she’s going to work. Nothing else happens, Eva wonders if she should follow Lara on Instagram and she doesn’t.

CLIP 5 ➡ AND WHO IS HE?

¡Ay...Viri…! We meet her in this clip, when Lara still seems to be Noora and is being nice and asking Eva how to get to her next class. Viri comes so full of energy, with so many propositions and ideas, she just comes on too strong, bless her soul, she tries too hard to fit in and it shows. We see Cris for the first time here and I love how they state that Viri is new in school and doesn’t know anyone. This is a change from the OG that I didn’t understand until season 2.

And then in comes Alejandro. Can we all just stop a second to appreciate how corny all of this is? The fact that the second Eva says his name is Alejandro, Alejandro by Lady Gaga starts playing? How Lady Gaga says Alejandro the second Viri mouths Alejandro? Like, did they have the song playing on set so that she could nail the timing? How Alejandro looks right at the camera when the song ends? It’s all so amazingly corny and cheesy and right out of one of my daydreams about the moment I’ll meet the love of my life. It’s cringy and gold and I love it.

CLIP 6 ➡ YOU ARE A GRADE A ASSHOLE

I think on the 14th of September of 2018, if you listened closely, you could hear the screams of all the confused and angry fans. I remember how I felt after watching who I KNEW was the Nora equivalent hanging out with Inés, it was devastating, I didn’t know what was gonna happen next, little did I know that with Skam España it’s always better to expect the opposite to what you’re used to.

I love how, here, Eva goes to Inés and tries to apologise, doesn’t ask for things to go back to the way they were, just for forgiveness and admits that she’s made a mistake and is so sorry that she’s hurt her and that it wasn’t her intention to do so. I really like how BRUTAL Inés is. She’s so hurt and has a reason to be so, even though we don’t know what the reason is I think that here we realize so much more than in the OG that it’s Eva’s fault, both because she says so and because she is completely understanding of Inés behaviour.

But, poor baby, she basically just lost the only friend she had in school, then went and tried to fix things with an old friend and finally it all backfired and she’s left alone.

You know what I really like about Skam in general? How they make you understand why characters do what they do, so, even if you don’t agree with their actions, you can’t make them the bad guys of the story, because situations are never black and white.

CLIP 7 ➡ All for you

Okay, let me just begin by saying that I love how they stablish the girl squad in the background even before we know they are the girl squad, like they are part of the high-school, we see them getting in and out of class, moving around.

Jorge is so sweet. That’s all I have to say, like, the way he notices that Eva is not OK? How he tries to get the truth out of her??? Just heart eyes everywhere, I honestly think he’s the sweetest Jonas of the bunch and Eva is probably up there for being the clingiest Eva, but I love her.

CLIP 8 ➡ End of the year trip!!!

Here we discover Eva’s love for pizza, I can relate. And I love that she’s not mad at Jorge for being out with his friends and, even though she is jealous she is not there, she understands the situation and still tells Jorge to have a good time and means it.

Also here is the first time we see something that’s become sort of a recurrent theme in Skam España, the “I post on Instagram pretending that everything is alright and that I’m having the time of my life when I’m dying inside”.

CLIP 9 ➡ Hungover

So this is a clip that changes with its second viewing, I was so sure Lucas was jealous at Eva because she was kissing Jorge and, don’t get me wrong, I still think that he’s jealous, but more at the fact that they can be out in public and kiss and no-one will bat an eye than at the fact that Eva is kissing the boy he likes.

Also, if you want a sign telling you that you need to get some friends ASAP, sitting alone on a Saturday watching your partner play football, or whatever they play, with their friends as you sit alone on the bleachers eating Cheetos should do the trick.

Oh, and I love Jorge, have I mentioned that? How supporting he is? The way he encourages her and tells her how amazing she is while teasing her and making her laugh is amazing, I’ve never had a relationship like this, but I’m pretty sure being with someone who’s self esteem is as low as Eva’s is right now must not be easy, but he does it with such an ease, he loves her so much he’ll support her through thick and thin and he’ll be by her side for whatever she may need as long as she wants him to.

Also, Eva not being mad that he forgot that they where supposed to hung out together is something I have conflicting feelings about because, OK, you shouldn’t put on a show and scream and all of that, but it was important to her and she doesn’t say anything because she’s afraid that she’ll lose him if she does, she should have made it clear that she was hurt and that it was okay, for this once, but that she hoped it never happened again because she was counting on spending the day with him and now her plans are ruined and that’s not OK.

So I think this clip shows how much Eva depends on Jorge, so much so that she won’t stand up for herself for fear of loosing him, and that’s sad, but also so fucking relatable. And I’m not blaming Jorge here for forgetting it, I’m sure that to him the “I’ll be all yours” comment was just not as important as it was to Eva, he should’ve remembered though, and Eva should’ve shown him he hurt her.

CLIP 10 & 11 ➡ Shitty meeting

That meeting was painful to watch, but can I just state how much I hated Viri during that first season and how much she’s changed and improved, like here she is: “I don’t get you and you don’t follow the society’s way of thinking or acting so you’re weird” and now she’s all: “I don’t get you and you don’t follow the society’s way of thinking or acting, but you’re my friend and I’m here for whatever you need”.

I also love the little hints they drop here and there about Amira and her hijab being a new thing, like how she says she’s planning on buying a burkini and Cris is all like WTF? But then Amira looks at her like saying, are you my friend or what? And Cris is all like, OF FUCKING COURSE AMIRIS FOREVER AND EVER AND EVER, so she ends up supporting her.

And Nora’s introduction, I think it’s amazing, and I was so FUCKING confused on my first viewing, like, girl, she’s literally called Nora so she MUST be Noora, but, then, who the fuck is Lara? Little did we know…

I’ve also noticed how much Amira’s changed, she’s so closed of and defensive in this episode, both clips, like she is not sure whether the girls will accept her or not, so she puts up this wall between them to guard herself and is brutally honest, maybe even cruel. Looking at this clip now feels so weird, because this is not the Amira I know now, the Amira I know is quiet, and loving and caring, and loves to talk about her religion and her culture, and is always ready to help her friends, or to fight for them… It really takes me back to what Skam really is about, loving one another and creating safe spaces where we can grow and become who we are meant to be free of prejudice.

Final thought on this clip, I really, really, really hate Cris’ make up here, like, girl, WE are supposed to be the clowns here, not you.

CLIP 12 ➡ The weirdos

So, Eva and Nora, I love their friendship, the way Nora picks up on the fact that Eva is NOT okay, and asks her if everything is alright a couple of times before she leaves???? Heart eyes everywhere.

Also I’m going to use this to address the criticism about Nora’s introduction, honestly, I don’t remember where I saw it, it was more than a year ago, but it basically said that it was the least gay out of all of them and I’m like, WTF???? People, aren’t you tired of being queer-batted? Because I am, I’m so over queer-batting, and that you’re asking for it is weird. Because, if they are not meant to be anything more than friends, I’m grateful that they don’t have any kind of interaction that could be considered as “gay” (although I don’t really know what a “gay” interaction actually is, I guess I would already have a girlfriend by now if I did, instead of sitting in a coffee shop writing very, very, very long Tumblr posts about things no-one really cares about).

In defence of anyone who likes Noreva, I get it, we are all starved for good wlw representation, and on the original the only thing remotely close we had to that was Noora and Eva’s friendship during the first season, but here we’ve got Cris and Joana, so having Eva and Nora be just best friends is totally fine by me.

The clip ends with a heartbroken Eva watching as Jorge laughs with Inés, I don’t know. I have nothing to say about it, other than the fact that I’m glad I’m no longer 16 and have better communicating skills and higher self seem than Eva, not that I did at 16, I was an absolute mess at 16, still am, in a different way.
