You know how something Really Racist gets put into a creative work and it’s super clear that it’s sheer ignorance on their part and you think to yourself, “hang on, did NO ONE mention that this is Super Racist??? Not a SINGLE person in the whole company???”
yeah, well I have spent the last SIX MONTHS repeatedly having the argument that something in our plan for our next book at work is Super Racist in an Orientalist flavor—which, like, I spent EIGHT YEARS on a dissertation SPECIFICALLY about how white people do things that are Super Racist in a specifically Orientalist flavor in their creative works without specifically meaning to and just basically outlining how Not To Do That and then, yes, I was given a phd in the subject because THAT’S WHAT I KNOW THE MOST ABOUT IN THE WHOLE WORLD. I’m like the movie Lucy where you don’t use 90% of your brain except it’s because 90% of my brain is permanently devoted to obscure facts about how white people Do That in fiction and ways they could just Not Do That.
My boss:
NO IT’S NOT. IT’S MY FUCKING E X P E R T OPINION AND IT SHOULD MATTER MORE
#so from now on#i'm gonna assume for every future instance i find in creative works#where there's the Super Bad Thing#I'm gonna assume there's a small aggrieved expert trying to stop the company from doing that#also my boss met with me a couple days later and she was like#HMMMM there is some TENSION in our team these days??? why do you think???#and I'm like THE TENSION IS THE RACISM YOU'RE INSISTING ON#also the third team member is an actualfact childrens lit author#and STILL the boss insists on trying to storyboard our books#and then when actualfact childrens lit author like fucking points out every single thing that could be better#boss responds WELL THAT'S JUST LIKE YOUR OPINION MAN#i am le frustrated this week#also this is my first creative job#is it always like this?#should i be ratcheting down my expectations or should i be looking for a different job????
