Okay let me explain. Before I say anything I only read the first 3 books and the 6th one, which are Daphne, Anthony, Benedict and Francesca's story.

Here's my rating:

Daphne's book was horrible. idk if you've watched the TV show but *spoiler* that scene with Daphne forcing herself on Simon? It's ten times worse in the book.

Anthony's book was okay-ish I love their romance ig but both character were so bland!! Kate is so boring and insecure. It made me roll my eyes way too many time whenever she open her mouth lol. Anthony also pissed me off!!! I didn't like him in the book AT ALL. Their first time is a light dub-con *spoiler* Let's just say he made their first night his right while Kate was terrified and just wanted to postpone it so she can gather up her courage. It made me quite angry. (bare that in mind s2 is soooooo much different than the book. Plot-wise I enjoyed the book better and for characters, I loved the show. Only if I could mashup these two...)

Benedict's book is a Cinderella retelling. The premises were there but the book didn't quite met them. Again Benedict is so boring... he's nothing like show!Benedict and I loved Sophie<3 Their story is quite unique and if the show approach it right, it can be the best season tbh...

Francesca's was my favorite. Angsty, more than the first three. It's the only book that their first time isn't questionable (kinda) and tbh I really enjoyed it! I loved both characters. I'm not saying it's the best historical romance book ever but it was way more enjoyable than the other 3 I've read.

I gotta say these books are problematic and white asf lmao. Simon is literally blond with blue eyes!! It was quite a shock when I read the book the first time...

it’s just weird to see so many people constantly bring up the fact that edwina is 1/4 white whenever they compare edwina and kate in anyway. there is definitely the underlying implication that edwina is not brown enough or something. and this insistence to label and quantify how brown a person is not only weird, it is very much based on american-centric race discourse.

i am going to simultaneously read your response + ramble my own thoughts ++ inform you that i read the books after s1 came out and The Viscount Who Loved Me is tied for my favorite of the series. The enemies-to-lovers was absolutely delicious (i do have words on how this was handled in the series 😠)

i wanted the entire season in one sitting so i will do my best not to spoil the ending, but it all blends together. sorry in advance!

ok first and foremost i am OBSESSED with how they made the sheffield nee sharma's of indian descent. so much better than the book because of the heritage and no need for kate's traumatic backstory similar to anthonys anymore. ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT.

all of your thots are correct. i concur. johnny b done did us proud. all of the gifs of him looking at kate and smelling her has me swooning STILL. ugh i cannot wait to see his character growth in the next two seasons. i want to say more but will refrain until after you watch the last episode. let us put a pin in this thot 📌

SHE PLAYED THIS CHARACTER SO WELL. Kate is an absolute entitled bitch in the book and series kate? just a woman wanting the best for her sister and not putting up with societys bullshit. Yes yes. her face and eyes and just HER 🔥🔥 Can we talk about her little lilac lingerie in the garden scene? I want.

actually let us talk more about that garden sex scene because HOLY HELL. Anthony Bridgerton in the book would NEVER. Never ever make their first (and few after) all about Kate. The Anthony of the book was very set in his 'wed bed bred' ways and not falling in love with his wife. In the books the bee scene is ICONIC. It came too soon in the series because in the books Ant actually freaks the fuck out and tries to suck the sting out of Kate's tit and Violet and Mary catch them. So she's compromised and they have a swift wedding. The rest of the book is him is being grumpy and gold to his viscountess and not falling in love with her.

Anthony never proposed to Edwina in the book either. That wedding arc was TOO MUCH. I hated it. Book Kate and Edwina have SUCH a strong relationship that Edwina actually was steering the Kathony ship even when he was still set on courting Edwina. Yelling at Kate and being angry was waaay too ooc for our diamond.

the series robbed us of even more BEAUTIFUL build up and hate sex and trying not to love the sex with them sex and the 'i don't need no one' sex and kathony being absolute SLUTS for one another.

THEIR CHEMISTRY IS SO SO GOOD IN THE SHOW. Brilliant. Wonderful. Would watch another season dedicated to them.

LOATHING ANTHONY IS THE POINT!!!!!!! He's the character you're meant to hate and omfg he does it so well. literally shaving off those mutton chops makes the man at least 70% more lovable. Make the man 6'5, piercing blue eyes, and a pixel with a passion for medicine and i mean --- Anthony is a boy that had to grow to a man at 19, responsible for that big ol' loving family. Poor kid.

Dang the Saphne fans and even that is a stretch as they are mostly Simon stans with Daphne being an afterthought for most of them. We get that you're upset, but if you love Saphne so much, go watch s1 again, let the rest of the fandom enjoy the other couples!

so this is a bridgerton post

just a personal list of THINGS i wanna see on the tv show (which continues for 8 seasons in my head) having just finished reading (and rereading in some cases) the entire series (and ofc watching s1 of the show)

in rough order of need:

1. all the other love interests (other than penelope) to be nonwhite. Gareth is an obvious one if they keep his relationship with Danbury, but like... nonwhite love interests!! (Personally would love to see an Asian Kate and Indian Michael, but I’m really not picky here. Like MAYBE I’ll accept Lucy being blonde but honestly - I want all of the love interests to be nonwhite.)

2. bisexual benedict bridgerton. it TRULY felt like they were setting this up... worst case, let him bang some dudes in season 2 before meeting Sophie. Better case? Make Sophie into Steven. You can keep the essence of the story... but honestly just make it even BETTER that way. Gay cinderella??? Yes please.

3. LESBIAN ELOISE. Not only have they set this up with her relationship with Benedict, but the Phillip they cast doesn’t... work. You know who would work and is already a wonderful character? MARINA. You can have the same essense of the story but make it even better because... well, gay. Also lessens the constant influence of kids in the series.

4. Just generally less kid-themes. It makes sense for some of the storylines - Daphne/Simon’s, for sure, but Eloise? Doesn’t make sense with this Eloise. Rewrite Francesca accepting her infertility and adopting a kid or something. Also... 9 kids? Give Lucy a break.

5. i would love to see, like they did in s1, introductions of future storylines sprinkled in. I WANT 8 seasons desperately, because I do believe each sibling deserves THEIR season. but if you need to condense things later on, for example if you have fransesca/john getting married during benedict’s season they you could do colin/eloise/fransesca’s storylines simultaneously, like in the books

6. the fact that s1 was wholly this decent and it by FARRRRR the worst book makes me so excited bc if they could create this content with not-good source material then i’m intrigued...... but some of the wittiness from the book was definitely missing and i would love to see more of that

I was wondering if you have any thoughts on who you like to see cast as Kate and Sophie and when do you think we might casting news? I have some ideas of unknown English actors I like to see and I really hope they stick with casting unknowns like they did with the first season. Thoughts?

I REALLY hope they’ll stick to casting unknowns too, like the others I think they’ll be up and coming UK/Irish talent (International is ofc always a possibility but especially in Covid times but really who knows!) I just look at the cast we’ve got and they’ve been in things like Waterloo Road and Call the Midwife in small parts and reckon it’ll continue in that vein. As for casting ideas I’m totally open! I would like to see them cast non-white actresses - except in the case of Sophie just because so much of her storyline is wrapped up in her being a servant and treated badly and worked to the bone by her “pretty blonde stepmother and sister” (who I have a sneaky suspicion they might rewrite to possibly be Cressida and her mother but that is literally just a What If theory because idk if I can see them having two Mean Girl bitches on the show), she’s falsely accused of theft and imprisoned and threatened with hanging or transportation just because Araminta has privilege and because she Could, Benedict (who really bothered me in the book with his persistence and blackmail to get Sophie to London) would come across as a white saviour and his insistence and not taking no for an answer would be very uncomfortable. The show has already gotten criticism (and rightly so) for how they handled Marina and I would hope they’d learn from it. For Kate I saw on Twitter they are looking for an Indian actress but I don’t know how accurate that is (I’m not very involved in the Kathony fandom so maybe someone can confirm this? Nicola has already had costume fittings for S2 so I imagine Kate has already been cast if they’re at that stage) and I saw a fancast of Jessica Henwick in the role and since I love her I’d be happy with that lol But they’ve cast everyone so perfectly already (hearing Jonathan say he auditioned for Simon and they sent him Anthony instead makes me think they do know what they’re doing because he’s perfect as Anthony) so I’m excited to see what happens! There’s a theory floating around that they might announce (if not Sophie then at least Kate) casting on Valentine’s Day but WHO KNOWS

honestly why not make the sharmas a british indian impoverished gentry family living in somerset? there's clearly other south asians in england and the ton, the show could still show their culture and customs, but the voyage from india alone brings up a few issues. idk maybe kate had some suitors in somerset? but the timing was bad and she turned them down because her father just died, mary was still grieving, and edwina was like 10. since women were expected to leave their families to join their husbands, maybe none of her suitors had the money/accommodations/willingness to take her mother and sister in, so she chose to stay and take care of them instead. she becomes frustrated with these men and the idea of marriage, dashing her previous romantic notions of love matches like her parents or her dad and mary. being a naive 18 yo suddenly in charge of managing the household she didn't make the best financial decisions at first which made things worse, then asked the sheffields for help not realizing the extent of the situation with mary and her father (because she was so young when mary and her dad married, and they sheltered her from the harsher stuff the way she does with edwina now). now make it so that mary was absent in the first years but stepped up later (and show it!) and feels guilty so she's the one who asks lady danbury for help. kate actually tells mary about edwina's dowry thinking it was a good idea until mary fully explains what happened with the sheffields years ago and now she feels guilty. they get a proper mother-daughter character arc addressing their shortcomings and guilt. edwina becomes more aware of their financial situation and picks anthony (the rich titled suitor who cares about family so yay maybe he'll help them all?) because she (misguidedly ofc) feel like a burden and wants to repay the sacrfices kate and mary have made - edwina and kate both have proper character arcs revolving around duty to family for women in the era, which also serves to parallel anthony's arc about duty for a man. now there's a cohesive theme about duty vs desire for the season through multiple characters. and actual commentary building on s1 on marriage being how women survived in the era due to the lack of other options (edwina is not a golddigger 🙄 and kate's deal with the sheffields for edwina to marry a man of english peerage is a pretty typical goal for the women of the ton? the bigger issue is that they're terrible people whose love for family is conditional)

idk this is just me rewriting the sharmas in the show, trying to give them a proper backstory and spitballing ideas for character development, combining parts of the book and show, ofc it's not near perfect. i'm just coming up with possible alternatives to make sense of what the show was trying for but missed by a mile because of messy writing 😬 also me caring more about the female characters and women's relationships with each other more than these writers do 🔪

bridgerton is really lucky for the actors, they really sell their characters and work with what they're given, but even the best can only do so much with garbage writing holding them back

Yeah, I agree. They should have just come from Somerset. In s1, I think one of Daphne's suitors in the ton was played by a British Indian actor and had an English name as well (I think it was Lord Hardy). Then there was Lucy Granville, who had an English name. The changes to Sharma's backstory and Bridgeton's whole colour-conscious casting bring up many uncomfortable colonial implications. I cringe any time someone suggests Anthony visit India. Dorset was bad enough. We are just lucky he didn't mention yoga or anything about having a spiritual awakening when visiting India. Not to mention we all know what English aristocrats were up to when they visited India. Hopefully, next season the show and Anthony will stay far away from the topic of India.

Yeah, the season would have benefitted by having a theme related to all their subplots. I think it felt like there were more subplots than s1 because they didn't relate to the main plot. The subplots like the Ponzi scheme, Prudence, LW, Eloise and Theo, and Queen were all intertwined. Whereas the love story was completely separate from everything else that was going on. I also wish that Sharma's story arc explored women's lack of options and how vulnerable they were without a male relative/guardian. Making Kate's role align with Anthony was dumb. The books and the show seem to take the stance that wanting to marry for love = good debutante and marrying for money = bad debutante. And a lot of fandom seems to have internalised this, which is unfortunate. Honestly, I think it would have been fun seeing the Sharma's scheming to bag a rich man.

I think a large part of this S2's success is because audiences are desperate for romances with two good actors and great chemistry to match, which Jonathon Bailey and Simone Ashley delivered.

My only thing is I think they could could tokenize interior shots as well. Because they did kind of tokenize and homogenize the story.

For example if the Sharmas are from Bombay (I refuse to believe Kate and Edwina would call it that) Mumbai. They’d be living in the Maratha Empire, they didn’t even have Maharajas. They had Chhatrapatis and later Peshwas. I mean if we apply IRL history to Bridgerton, Kate and Edwina’s father likely served under Bajii Rao II. Who was mostly a puppet and kind of a shit of an Emperor (ofc colonialism doesn’t exist so the Anglo-Maratha Wars probably don’t either…also that kind of makes the Sharma patriarch potentially a not great person😬 but thats a whole thing to unpack)

Basically my point is I could see Bridgerton tokenize interior shots as well because they’re not really all that interested in historical accuracy and thats fine when dealing with the British monarchy I don’t think I want them to touch Indian aristocracy and royals because that’s wrapped in a lot relatively recent historical implications.

And would they try to recreate the interior of a crumbling palace the last vestiges of a once great empire? Or would they even create an interior accurate to Maharashtrian architecture and motifs or would they see a Rajasthani palace because those still exist as tourist attractions and just recreate that? Interior shots would still have story implications and because they were trying to skirt the idea of colonialism I don’t know how to avoid it being accidentally offensive? (Which I am aware is a sad debate but here we are)

I’m know that I am thinking about this more that 90% of the people involved and that no one is watching Bridgerton for historical accuracy. But as someone who cannot shut their brain off I can’t help it. I’m sorry😭😭

I’d love to get a few opinions from South Asian fans because I am unsure and confused about how I feel.

So there’s a common complaint of S2 that not a lot of time was spent on Kate’s backstory-I have a post on my feelings on my page somewhere its long but it essentially boils down to I think Kate’s present is the story more than her past unlike Anthony who’s past is the problem. So where I wanted more non Anthony Sharma sisters/fam scenes I wasn’t really looking for more backstory.

However I get the criticism of wanting backstory and people that wanted more of that usually point to wanting Kate flashbacks and to that I have a bit an issue in imagining what a scene like that might look like because of 1 reason.

They filmed this during the pandemic, the show itself had a few production pausing cases on set as it was-they definitely could not fly out to India to film for a day. And truthfully if this was pre-pandemic I still don’t see them ever taking a plane to film in India anyway.

Which means they’d try to film 1814 Mumbai in 2022 Bath. And I don’t think I want to see what a stylized version of what a predominantly white crew thinks Mumbai looked like in the 1800s.
