Today I learned that tumblr doesn’t like it when I try to upload pictures I made in GIMP, so heck me and heck my digital art I guess (this ref used to be transparent, but I had to add a background and screenshot the image so I could upload this hhHHHH)
Anyway here she is: my ndrv3 s/i, Asahi Kuroki, the Ultimate Daydreamer!
Info about her will be under the cut:
-She’s 5′5
-She’s basically a walking contradiction (grouchy but sweet, shy but loud and excitable, hates people but highly empathetic, etc.)
-She can actually tolerate a lot unless she’s in a frazzled mood.
-She almost never takes off her headphones because covering her ears makes her feel more secure.
-In a similar vein, her ears are very sensitive so she hates prolonged loud noises and crowds, since they can cause her to have auditory overloads.
-Fears being abandoned because of being “annoying,” which is why she’s so shy and nervous.
-Though she’s usually a bit grouchy because she’s just done with reality and the very act of being alive, so she doesn’t fear death. Her life has no value to her.
-Zones out a lot and tries to push away reality in favor of her fantasies (though she becomes more grounded as the game progresses).
-She doesn’t like confrontation, or at least confrontation when alone.
-She has a lot of trouble stringing her thoughts together into words, so she stammers over herself a lot.
-She’s way too trusting and gullible for her own good, leading her to be taken advantage of very often in the past.
-This is mostly because of how she doesn’t like doubting people because she thinks that would be considered rude.
-She is quite observant, though, and will notice if something is wrong with someone she loves.
-Despite how overemotional she can be sometimes, she’s a logical thinker at her core.
-Bottles up her very aggressive emotions so she won’t bother anyone even though it physically pains her (which is part of why she can be so passive-aggressive sometimes).
-She overthinks everything.
-She likes to talk, but is too worried about being annoying to talk as often as she wants to.
-She gets excited really easily and when she gets hyped up she gets very loud.
-Do not interrupt her when she’s daydreaming, it’ll immediately put her in a bad mood. Y’know what just don’t interrupt her at all.
-She’s a pacifist.
-Mostly only wants to beat the game for everyone else’s sake because she’d rather stay in the academy than go back to the real world.
-Some part of her is usually in motion at any given time because she has a lot of pent-up energy and also it helps her think.
-Clicks her tongue sometimes when she’s in thought, and often ends up talking to herself when she’s doing something.
-Always cries when she doesn’t want to, can never cry when she needs to.
-She draws and writes a lot because that’s the best way to get her ideas down without bothering anyone.
-Good singer but terrible dancer.
-Protective of those she cares about and is insanely loyal.
-During situations of crisis, she can turn off her emotions and zero in on finding a solution.
-Introverted and enjoys her space and alone time (though she is very cuddly with those she loves).
-Promises are EVERYTHING to her. If she makes a promise, she will keep it no matter what. If you make a promise to her, she will hold you to it.
-Flip-flops between holding grudges forever and being too forgiving.
-She has poor ankles, so she can’t make sharp turns or she’ll trip real bad (and she also can’t swim).
-Used to bite herself as a way to relieve stress, but she swore it off before the game. She still absent-mindedly nips her fingers sometimes because it doesn’t count as stress-biting if she’s not stressed and doesn’t bite hard.
-Used to be in a dark place mentally, but she’s trying to get better (though she still gets caught up in bouts of self-hatred on occasion).
-Before the game, she was a sly, selfish, highly manipulative problem child who would gladly use violence to solve her problems. She had a group of “friends” that she had wrapped around her finger, and she mostly only used them for what they could do for her. She wanted to get into the game just to see how long she could last, and her family basically bribed Team Danganronpa into letting her in so they could be rid of her.
-Her fabricated past had her on the other side of this. People would take advantage of her constantly and her family kept trying to push her into a mold she wouldn’t fit into, and then acted upset when she inevitably didn’t fit the mold. She only had one friend (who was the one who made her swear off stress-biting).

That glorious rnm review made me realise that I dont really hate m'ria as a character, because she isnt really a character. Shes multiple different plot devices in a trenchcoat. Need the hustling and snarky girl next door bartender who always ready to listen to our main character? That's her! Fancy a damsel in distress attacked by our mysterious villain? Here you go! Need a horror-like final girl with an axe in a cornfield? You got it! Fancy a love triangle for your traumatised couple and need the 'easier' choice? She's it! A psychic medium who can tell the future, past, emotions and whatever have you? Who else but her! Do you need someone terminally ill in need of saving? The best girl for the job! Are you missing #strongfemalecharacter who's not afraid to talk back to men but is also adored by them? That's her!
And no, this is not a character being complex or complicated, because what makes a character complex is a mixture of positive and negative traits - that's the 'contradiction' that is foundation of full fledged character.
Sure, I'm biased as the chances of me enjoy her as a character were slim from the beginning - even in s1 she seemed a bit too much of a snarky girlboss character to me (hell, that's also why I didnt vibe with Isobel at first) and after s2 there's nothing that they could do to make me tolerate her. But s3 m'ria is everything and nothing. She's whatever is needed in the particular moment but also she's everything else at the same time. This lack of personality, but at the same the the abundance of contradictory personality traits, makes it impossible to tell who she is or who she's supposed to be. Add on top of that we have the overexposure and one dimensional actress... Mess.
God you are sooo right, my friend! She's "everything and nothing", buddy you nailed it right on the head! I especially love the comparison of her as a bunch of characters in a trench coat hahaha you're absolutely correct! I didn't mind her at all in s1 but I hear where you're coming from with her being GIRLBOSS lol
