Acting like everybody can afford high quality long lasting products from animals is classist. I can't afford leather shoes that will last "decades" (which they literally never have even when I could afford them growing up). A decent wool jumper can cost upwards of 100 dollars. It's. Expensive. To wear. Pure. Animal products. Stop acting like it's the one and only solution.
Y'all have such a hatred for anything that isn't leather and wool etc you forget that most of the affordable versions of the products are mixed with plastic and other cottons anyway. Not to mention that capitalism values quantity over quality and so many things are getting worse and lasting less time so that we buy more. Someone like me, who unfortunately has to buy a fair amount of clothes because mine end up torn and ripped and unrepairable, has seen the active decline of (especially women's) clothes quality over the years, even when I've splurged and bought the expensive items.
"Just thrift it" i have 16g boobs and im fat. I'd love to thrift my clothes but unfortunately i rarely find shit I like in my size. Not to mention thrift stores aren't the be all end all of solutions - especially these days those products are still expensive as fuck at second hand stores.
I am not saying that the fast fashion industry has it right, not by a long shot it's a disgusting place and We need to be fighting that industry but we can't pretend that the solution is to "kill a few animals". That's arrogant as fuck and ignores people who struggle with income and the enshittification of clothing (and products everywhere tbh) as a whole . This isn't a trolley problem, this is a massive and deep rooted issue with capitalism. We could be focused on making hemp products more of a thing, we could be making sure that pineapple leather is more of a thing. There are tons of sustainable replacements for both fast fashion AND animal products that we should be trying to make available to people of all incomes, instead of shaming people for not being able to afford the pure leather jacket and shoes.
Edit: and!! We should be making sure that the end of life of all our products is dealt with accordingly!! No matter what we use.
