my cybersecurity courses in uni are like 15 years out of date and it drives me insane. and i dont mean in the "haha im so smart, i already know what a buffer overflow is thanks 2 tomert scotwald", i mean in the "they made this lab for android so long ago that when i follow the directions to the letter the app crashes since package naming schemes have changed and this attribute doesn't exist anymore" kinda way and it makes me want to beat powerful people with very heavy hammers

in my original headcanon notes from like 5 odd years ago i made red into a salaryman working for silph co based on that whole bit after the rocket takeover when the president literally just offers you a job at silph co after you graduate after saving him.
and some how i've evolved that into "IT professional who wants to ram his head into a wall whenever one of any of the 16 gym leaders + elite 4 and lance opens up a phishing email from '[email protected]'"

hey, no offence, i don’t want to sound rude but don’t you think it’s a bit unsafe to be sharing your location and your whereabouts so openly? i’m actually talking out of concern not hating.
thats true but i’m js showing the general area (that’s not the distance from where i live, it’s the distance where i was at the time) since i’m so close to a place important in one of my favorite book series ykwim?
and i zoomed in enough on the bridge so you couldnt even see which side i’m on lol
plus i make sure to not even like. specify where exactly i’m from (just that i’m a gulf arab—and trust me, theres currently hundreds of gulf arabs in london) or my real name or any details about me personally other than my age gender and ethnicity / religion
and i’m leaving london tmr anyways sooo it wouldnt matter even if someone figured out my location (which is very unlikely in the first place)

@testdrves
continued from discord.
“yeah? i bet you would.” snorted derisively, though he didn’t meet her eyes. “that’s probably a job requirement for you people at this point.” you people meaning those in the entertainment business — as if he hadn’t been receiving his paychecks directly from her label for quite some time now.

Hot take but maybe Ao3 should use some of their funding to make their own encryption / Captchas instead of giving the domain to Cloudfare. Or at least implement an alternative, non-3rd-party method of defending against DDosses
Since, y'know, Cloudfare could be a massive data mining company and is already causing problems for a lot of users... Further reading below
"Now cloudflare has control to eavesdrop and log any user interactions with your website or silently tamper content if they please." -dr jimbob (Link) explains this well & briefly in a stack exchange comment.
JoePie91 has a post criticizing Cloudfare & provides alternatives at the end, although the article is old so take it with a grain of salt (Link).
Troy Hunt has an equally old article in support of Cloudfare, if you want a different opinion (Link). Although I disagree with a lot of his takes, and the whole "anyone who disagrees is crazy and polarized" bit is super off-putting.
"if your choices are to either run entirely unencrypted or to protect against the 95% (or thereabouts) of transport layer threats that exist between your visitors and your origin, do the sensible thing. Nobody in their right mind is going to advocate for remaining totally unencrypted rather than using CloudFlare purely to encrypt between their edge nodes and your users. There are people not in their right mind that will argue to the contrary and that's precisely what the title of this post suggests - it's unhealthy security absolutism."
I personally think security absolutism is silly, but to say people who want to use more secure alternatives are "not in their right mind" is an insane straw man.
Idk I just want Ao3 voulenteers to do more research!! Users being forced to consent their info to Cloudfare in order to use the site is dumb! I'm done yapping, feel free to RB with your own thoughts / disagreements..

i'm smart, hardworking, and ambitious but it's all for nothing because i am a) physically incapable of applying any of the above traits to anything i'm not deeply interested in, and b) only interested in careers that make no money and will slowly kill me physically, emotionally, and spiritually

Song of the Day: April 30
"Breakeven" by The Script
#song of the day#cybersecurity videos completed today and we moved on to various types of workplace harassment and bigotry#what fun to complete four years' worth of compulsory office trainings back to back#surely tomorrow I will finish my gen-ed requirements and get to actually learn about finances. surely tomorrow.#anyway I couldn't mute or fastforward today's videos so I gave myself ten minutes to read fic as a special treat after each one finished#and at one point a character in the fic decided to use his heart and not his head and The Script started playing so loudly in my head#and did not leave#anyhow yesterday I said I'd give my two Teen Wolf song-related-fic-recs today and here they are!#fic rec#'with bloody feet across the hallowed ground' by owlpostagain - in which Stiles tells the literal truth! and it's a glorious trick!#absolutely delightful story. ticks over like perfect machinery. hits every emotional beat and then some#and 'The Sound As They Broke It Was Fearsome' by skoosiepants#an interesting setup--Teen Wolf and HP universes sort of merged--the Hale House is infinitely worse than the Shrieking Shack#also good character work but mostly it's the creativity of the merged world and the way it's introduced in the story that catches my mind#very good showing and not telling. what I think of as 'inset exposition' built right into the story#also it's a good song! 'I Guess I'll Forget the Sound I Guess I Guess' by Bodies of Water. some of the most memorable delivery ever#'up til that day I would hear them / and the sound as they broke it was fearsome#that was until your arms opened up wide / and the treasure therein was made mine'

they should've never made ada a hacker (specifically with her intercepting luis' emails to his college friend & that one scene in damnation where she forces the elevator to svetlana's laboratory to open to help leon & sasha + herself escape the self destruction sequence she intentionally activated) because i've taken it now to mean (i watch way too many computer software review & repair videos) she will be annoying about her preferred linux distributions to anyone who will listen, fellow spies, hackers & whichever partner wakes up to ada typing away on her laptop in their living room looking like she hasn't slept the whole night
#* file // : OOC — ( 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐑'𝐒 𝐂𝐑𝐔𝐒𝐀𝐃𝐄 . )#* file // : 004 — ( 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐂𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐍 . )#i'm very sorry but any technical skill/proficiency with computers instantly makes you a little bit of a nerd#it's law#that's one of her many secretive hidden traits very few will fully realize because she has to keep her mystique & allure at the forefront#it's inciting & disarming because often people's perceptions of attractive women's intellect run opposite to their looks#& while being underestimated is workable it is as equally deadly depending on who sees her as lesser#it is not always empowering to demolish the preconceived notions forced onto you#especially for a woman like her#i've talked before about how useful her hacking ability is in the context of corporate espionage as a way to remove the need for a handler#or paying off others to do the research ada can very well do herself#but it is also a skillset that allows her to get employed under her various personas & aliases as a data analyst or a cybersecurity expert#(with faked credentials hosted on an unsuspecting previous employer's websites for however long her credibility needs to last)#to strike at the core of a corporation's private data#she's very talented#i like to think that during one of these assignments she ran into ethan winters sometime in the late 2000s#& it was just a random coincidence where she thought nothing of him beyond being a fellow systems engineer working in a gray office complex#only for him to become such a central figure in the BSAA's dulvey coverup her eyes perked up reading their internal documentation#thinking it all a little too funny#all this without even mentioning her later relationship with mia that me & les (terrorgone) have plotted out
