Update Ghost Files Live was a quality show, and also I was definitely the oldest person there who came alone. They played the season finale of the current season- which was easily the best episode of the post-BFU run- and then Ryan, Shane, and producer Lizzie chatted about it and had a Q&A, and also did an Estes session live on stage which turned out to be fucking hilarious
Before the unpleasantness, I used to go to a whole lot of live shows and con panels, and I got kind of inured to the whole thing? I kind of stopped being amazed or amped up by "hey look it's the people from the thing", and it was fascinating to have that again
But it was very funny, and Ryan and Shane clearly really love each other and the crew and the show a lot, so it was very sweet. Also someone complimented my Oxbox Hallowstream IV shirt and a different person complimented the back patch on my battle vest, so what more could you need

Phasmophobia Au
Sally Face Edition
(Alt ! Au)
ft: sal, larry, travis (,ash, todd, and neil) tw: ghosts, murder, violence, demoniacs, weed, implied romance? i have never smoked weed can you tell? not beta read forgive me edit: it was beta read now yay a/n: i'm writing this up on my laptop rather than my phone, which i lost. anyways, feel free to request. this was heavily inspired by mark, bob, wade, (jack/sean) i also rewatched sally face fandub, it's pretty neat. you should watch it too. i added travis cause he's silly
after high school, after everything at the addison apartments, things you all knew you couldn't just leave the paranormal life behind. enrolling in collage, school went about the same. you moved in with your friends, and life was relatively normal.
normal.
you were laying on the wood floor, mind feeling a bit fuzzy. larry talking nonstop, sal sitting on the bed with his back against the wall. an odd silence filled the room, then larry spoke up.
"dudes, wait, wait, actually, hear me out on this one," larry slurred sitting up on the beanbag chair. "what if we like hunted ghost? ghostnabbers 'n shit." he waved his hands around dramatically. "larry, what. man, wait, what?" sal sat up as well. you turned your head to look over at larry not getting up from the floor. "just hear me out! like, i got this flyer from some dude talkin' about his ghost hunting job, showed me all his ghost tracking shit." larry stumbled to his feet, rushing to his desk dropping the flyer on your face. the paper covering your face for a moment before you grabbed it off, looking it over. in your high mind, this looked like the best idea that could have ever been said. "no way." you dragged yourself to your feet, plopping on sal's bed, showing him the flyer. sal looked it over as well. you were a group of unsupervised, high out of their mind, teens. of course, you were going to do it.
the others took some convincing, but they were in. it seemed it wasn't just you three that missed your paranormal fascination.
how you managed to get travis involved? he saw a flyer, thought it looked stupid. but, the more he looked at it, the more a strange fascination fell onto him. he knew ghosts were real, but actually searching for the things, solving their mysteries. he heard the ghost group talking about them, and tried not to eavesdrop, but couldn't help himself. (also, he heard you say it was pretty cool.) he called for the job and nailed it. now he has to deal with all of you and you all have to deal with him.
you, sal, larry, ash, and travis are usually inside the haunting grounds while todd, and neil stay in the truck, watching over and keeping equipment in check. they also often make sure you all get the objectives done. (you all refer to them as papa eagle. they share the title.)
"papa eagle, what're the objectives? over." "papa- what? over." (todd) "objectives are witness an event, capture ghost on film-" (neil)
(todd warms up to the title while neil owns it out the gate.)
(probably w/ travis) "why won't you listen to me, i already said the objectives are-" "cause you're not papa eagle." "papa huh-? i'm not calling todd or neil-" "papa eagle." "sorry, i'm not calling papa eagle- wait." "..." "..."
...
if you chose to partner with sal he always makes sure you got good equipment, doesn't want you to draw the short end of the stick. he cares very much.
while the idea sounded crazy at first, sal got into it after some convincing via you and larry. he nails the interview. he sees his friends did as well, and he's glad to have them onboard. though, when he sees travis is here, he had to do a double take. he's not opposed to it, just surprised. actually laughs, and nearly gets hit. larry, and ash wants to hit travis. you are the peacekeeper.
he's actually really good at this. he's had many experiences at the apartments, so the ghost violent attempts don't really phase him much.
sal likes to use the walkie even when he's in the same room as you, or anyone. finds it funny. everyone, but travis, join in.
"look, there's footprints, over." "roger, over." cue giggling. ...
"guys, you seein' this bullshit? over." "affirmative. over" "mhm, yeah. over." "i can practically smell it from here. over." "i wish i couldn't see it. over." "get off the line we're literally all in the same room. >:(" (travis) "buzz kill. over, and out." more giggling.
this man has no fear. will actively seek out the ghost, using the cursed objects. though not scared of them, he makes no room to provoke them. he's very chill with them. whether you're scared of them or not, sal's always sticking close to you just in case.
sal always ends up with a shit flashlight, or even a uv light to see. he always makes sure everyone has a good flashlight and ends up with the bad one. please help this guy. one time he got stuck with a candle. you made sure to keep close to him so he can share yours. he was very grateful.
sal has each ghost type, and behavior memorized, and actively adds to it, the twist is, they're memorized in such goofy ways.
"it's the one that can't touch the salt, finding no green stuff on the purple light, and it's talking to me over the ghost phone. over." "what- wait, huh? go again. over." "wraith, it's a wraith. over, and out."
he finds them all fascinating in honesty. if you share this interest, he tends to come to you with any, and all new information. enjoys talking to you about the kinds of ghosts and demons. you both like to take your ghostly conversations to todd, who also has everything memorized.
...
if you chose to partner with larry, i'll have you know larry is the instigator. this man will provoke, provoke, provoke. and will freak out when something goes wrong. he's really mellowed about it though. you, ash, and sal running in with the smudge sticks or a crucifix, trying to get the ghosts attention. travis is laughing over the walkie, todd and neil are watching in the van. he will make sure you're in the safe even when he's being stupid.
"harold wilson, harold wilson, harold wilson." "..." "..." "what a puss-" loud banging, chair is thrown but missed him. "haha. shit."
he's on a thin line between skeptic, and believer. he's always so surprised when the ghost shows themself, or if they give them evidence. he also just barley passed his interview. if it wasn't for all of you vouching for him, and being friends with the boss, he probably wouldn't have gotten the job.
larry hates mimics. hates how they give an extra piece of evidence and makes things difficult. literally calls them the try hard of the ghost community.
larry probably pulls pranks on everyone (travis). always dragging you into his pranks, sometimes pulling small one over you. larry just gets a good laugh at spooking everyone, claiming he's just "keeping you on your toes."
the ghost is always after him and travis. like, they always have it out for them. during ghost events, you could be standing right in front of it and the ghost would sidestep you and chase after them instead. everyone always pokes fun at it. secretly make sure to keep a crucifix on you at all times for him, just in case.
never leave larry alone with cursed items. he will use them without a second thought.
"and i pulled death." "you pulled what?" "death." "please, tell me you aren't using the cards." "..." "larry..." incoherent ghost noises
larry will bet on things. he would put money on what the ghost is. he will bet on chores, and such, and somehow, he always calls things. claims it's just luck, but after so many times everyone grows skeptical. he's always so lucky with the bets. probably the luckiest member out of the group.
larry is always throwing hands with travis. they can never, and i mean never be on the same page. the only time they are is during a hunt. you have to keep the peace.
...
if you chose travis, please be patient, he is trying. travis knows a lot about ghost, and the occult, but not about teamwork. at first, he will deny he needs a partner. it isn't until he gets the scare of his life, and you have to deter the ghost will he even consider it.
always cursing out the ghost once they are in some scary shit. he will go feral. please keep him in check.
ghost breaks the lightbulb above him "you piece of shi-" "travis, buddy, pal, friend, chum, i think it's hunting." "..." "..." "bitch."
travis keeps a tough front but will get anxious. he can deny it all he wants, but he sticks a bit closer to you, making sure to keep his flashlight on at all times, including in bright lights.
if it isn't larry getting targeted, it's him. can't explain the thought process. travis is always mumbling curses under his breath when the ghost is hunting. travis will claim he will use you as a human shield, but he doesn't. literally all his threats are empty threats. he will deny everything though. claims he didn't have the time, or something along those lines.
he oddly knows his stuff. very smart in this field of work, but 'hates' being praised for his knowledge. he brags a bit about it, only with you though.
you make travis open up a bit, he's nicer with everyone. you're not really scared of him, scolding him before he has a chance to say anything bad, or offensive to the group.
he doesn't join in any pranks, or walkie talkie jokes. he is the designated buzz kill. though, one time he did make a joke during an event. literally made you promise not to tell. blames all of you.
"make sure to take the picture of those bones. over." "wilco, taking picture now. over...wait"
always gets mad when your 'stupid' rubs off on him. but in all, he does want to make sure your safe. can't have your stupid get you in trouble, can he? he's stuck with you. (he actually isn't he just says he is cause he likes being your buddy.)
e/n: i only wrote for sal, larry, and travis cause it's going on 3am, and i'm eating shrimp stir-fry. i might do a part two, or something similar. thank you for reading :) (the beta reader is my brother{s} sue me) beta reader note: funni funni haha

[hello, I'm the anon that asked about all your favorite horror movies and food :]
Dw, I feel you Mel, I used to not be a fan of horror or scary shit in general, like even the thumbnails of YouTube videos would make me super nervous
But what got me out of that shell was playing a horror game...
After that I slowly started watching creepy stuff and eventually horror, reading horror, listening to true crime etc. All these things that used to leave me wondering if I'll be able to sleep tonight are now some of my favorite things, turns out I like getting jumpscared half to death 🙂
All because I played Granny one time with my bsf cause we were bored 😭
Even so, there are still a few horror movies I won't indulge in, not sure if I can handle those...yet
BUT ENOUGH BACKSTORY TALK
FAVORITE TV SHOW GO‼️
- Favorite anon
So, I consider myself a horror fan. I love watching people play horror games, and the not so intense ones, I love playing myself. And I LOVE slasher movies. The Scream franchise especially, even though I don't consider it actually scary at all. And more creature-based movies like The Thing don't bother me.
I used to say I just couldn't do paranormal, but I love movies like Thirteen Ghosts and 1408. I even like The Haunting of Connecticut movies. My best guess is when there's a mystery aspect + benevolent spirits + a happy ending, it helps to overpower whatever I can't handle. 1408 I still don't fully understand how I'm cool with it, and my first time trying to watch it, I did nope out pretty quick once things started happening, but now I really like it. The Shining walked the line of what I can and can't handle - I was able to function afterwards without nightmares, but I did make my husband come to the bathroom with me cause I didn't want to be alone, and I don't know if I'll ever watch it again.
I think when the paranormal borders more on demonic, and when there's creepy stuff with children, that's when things really become too much for me. Oh, also certain psychological things (the most recent Halloween movie actually fucked me up with this, and that Netflix Black Mirror choose your own adventure movie really messed me up for a while). So yeah, I love horror, until there's something I can't handle, and then I really can't handle it. And then I will ruminate on it until I am very unwell. But I don't fully know where that line is, so it's like playing Russian Roulette anytime I want to watch a horror movie.
ANYWAY, to your actual question.

Depends on the platform, generally, but my 100% for sure most popular is Fission, if only because it's been on FF.net since 2015 and gained readers by sheer inertia.
Star Trek: Strike Team Valkyrie, though I suspect that's more due to the different fandoms this megacrossover has touched so far not having much crossover...yet. 😉
The Accidental Librarian - A crossover between The Accidentally Paranormal series of books and The Librarians TV show. Bookstore owner Jane Fairfax somehow managed to buy a premium office space in downtown New York for a song to live her dream of owning a bookstore. She's excited to have her first book signing with the up-and-coming author Wanda Jefferson. After they've wrapped up the event and Jane is getting ready to close, she's surprised to discover one customer got lost in the stacks. It's too bad this dreamboat has no reason to stay in the store, you know, since it's closing...wait, are those ninjas?! Why are they invading her store?! Wanda Jefferson has just finished a successful book signing and is enjoying the amusing romcom playing out in front of her in the form of her hostess and an apparently random customer that needed help escaping the store's labyrinthine stacks. Suddenly ninjas crash their way into the store and are demanding a specific book that Jane has no hope of knowing what they're talking about. Wanda's keeping her particular skills on the DL until one of the ninjas pulls out a medallion that is just radiating magic! She wasn't planning on using her hybrid werewolf/vampire form tonight, but when the paranormal was afoot, one of the founding members of OOPS--Out in the Open Paranormal Support was on the job! Nathan Park was mostly looking for activities to fill his day. Medically discharged from the Marines after being exposed some radiation the government won't quite explain, he's been mostly getting caught up on reading and (his squadmates always made fun of him for this) his crochet hobby. Then he got lost in a bookstore and some ninjas attacked, and then the author who had just been signing books turns into a freaking werewolf, but somehow the creature of myth and horror isn't the bad guy! Eve, Jacob, Cassandra, and "The" Ezekiel Jones are shocked when Jenkins informs them that somehow The Library is losing books and artifacts! The library records say that the books are being redirected to the New York annex, but that, of course, is impossible; they lost the connection to that annex years ago. But that's their only clue, so they take portal back to where their careers with The Library all started, only to find a bookstore where the annex should be, it's filled with ninjas, there's a guy who Jacob worked with back in the day, and there's a weird werewolf-vampire hybrid defending the owner of the bookstore.

Mature? Adult? The not porn variety that happens to be completely okay venturing into some topics that aren't sex but still give purity cultists the vapors. (but I do write some smut, too)
Mostly characters that need to fill gaps in the world where there would be a person (CEO of a company, trash collector, kid in an arcade, that sort of thing) but the canon media never accounted for.

I respond to as many comments as I can. People honored me with a comment, it takes only a little effort to reply and is a nice reciprocation on the care they showed me.
Yes. My most problematic fic ("BAMF" or "Ranma is Fucked") got me blocked by half of a discord server. None of the people who blocked me bothered to read the fic, which was all about the problem with the central plot point.
Nope, unless you consider a forum RP post a story, in which case, yes.
"Indeed" pops up alot, sometimes my protags get too wordy, and nearly every female protag I write is Sapphic to one degree or another.
130,627 words, though that's complete and the next five longest are all WIPs that are likely going to be much longer than that by the time they're finished.
Gosh, name some of the legends of the Ranma 1/2 fandom and they've influenced me at some point, but I think the biggest influence was due to Rebecca "BurgerBecky" Heineman's work on the Sailor Sun saga. It directly influenced a lot of how I write Fission and some of the plot points I've got planned out for it.
Oh, gosh, there's several! I love most of @jaquik's stuff (and what I don't love I haven't gotten around to reading yet 😋), and Dear Diary directly inspired Return to Recipient ThrashJazz's The Girl Behind the Mirror got me rethinking a lot about the nekoken for Ranma and inspired me to start writing more fics with systems as a protag. @n7punk...just, like, ALL of n7punk's body of work. AnneOminous is a freaking drama powerhouse with her Phoenix saga @thestargayzingetherian - Just, like, unapologetically all the SPOP fluff ClassicalGal - Helped me understand my own gender journey back in the day...and we connected again recently. They did promise that someday they'd finish Notes from Julliard, but until then I still love their Genma's Daughter series, even if it's incomplete. 😁 AEM - The other author of a neurodivergent Isekai'd Ranma Saotome in Taming Shrews (seriously, PHENOMENAL worldbuilding!) NobleHeroine - Life is Not Built with Dreams (But Dreams are Upon which Life is Built) is a regular re-read for me and was basically the final puzzel piece to being able to properly build a polyamory Ranmafic. All my poly fics? Yeah, NobleHeroine was the one that built the template for me. 💖

Weird request but can I rq joseph, jotaro, josuke and giorno with a very.... unsettling gn s/o, if your familiar with sadako from the ring and/or kayako from ju-on(the grudge) that's the vibes that they give off. It also doesn't help that they do stuff that can be considered "odd" like crawling in vents, casually chilling under tables and beds, popping up out of nowhere when you're not paying attention for 2 seconds, twisting and bending their body into ways "no human being can", casually dropping information on stuff "no normal human being would know"(take that as you will), being "weirdly" into the paranormal and occult world of things, or even just standing cause they have vibes that natrually set off a fear response The kicker is that they are extremely oblivious to how scary they are so they could be coming down from a vent, the person they appeared infront of is screaming their head of and s/o is just like "???". Yeah they might make you feel like your in a horror movie but it's fine 😄

gn! s/o, they/them pronouns, fluff-ish ig
Note: I had fun writing this! Also, I suck at writing for Jotaro. Sorry about that. I hope this was to your liking anon!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They lowkey reminded him of Santana when they come crawling out of the vents. Just not nearly as terrifying.
Finds their oddness a part of their charm and is saddened that they don't realize it.
He's quite concerned about what might happen if others find out about your hobbies because of the time period.
When he was worried about Speedwagon’s disappearance they told him that he was “relatively safe.” He was confused because unlike the usual comforting he'd expect to get he only got that.
It always seemed as if they knew things before they happened and he always joked about them being some sort of psychic.
He'll admit that he has been scared by your little appearing trick more than once although begins to get used to it after a while.
If he sees them sitting under a table he’ll just squat down and ask them if something is up. If not he’ll leave them be.
Although when they twist their body in nearly impossible ways he starts to get concerned that they'll hurt themselves or that may have been turned into a vampire. It's unlikely but a genuine concern.
┉ˏ͛ ̩̩̥͙ ⑅͚˚ ҉ ⑅͚˚ ͛༝̩̩̥͙ ˎ┉
Tumblr media
Probably thought that they were an enemy at first-
Once he gets to know them better he sort of just accepts that they are like that.
Is worried they will hurt themselves when they are bending their body a lot.
Is a bit weirded out by their fascination with the occult but as long as they don't drag him into it too much or end up getting hurt he's fine with it.
When they say that something unexpected is going to happen and it actually does is when he starts to really get concerned.
Thinks they're weird for finding comfort in sitting under tables or laying under beds.
Won't admit it but they scare him sometimes with the shit they.
“If you hear an old man grumbling I'd recommend not going out. The man down the hall just wants to find what it lost but he might mistake your eyes for his so it’s better to be safe than sorry”
Honestly thinks they are talking about stand users or are going insane. There is no in-between.
In quiet rooms with him, he can swear that he hears whispers around them but they aren't moving their mouth in the slightest.
He figures he's just hearing things, his brain making sounds where the sounds aren't, just to fill in the silence. Although after a while he is beginning to think it's not just a coincidence.
┉ˏ͛ ༝̩̩̥͙ ⑅͚˚ ҉ ⑅͚˚ ͛༝̩̩̥͙ ˎ┉
Tumblr media
They have scared him too many times.
One example was when he was waiting on them to show up for their date, so he looked at his phone to see if you texted him. He swore they were nowhere near him like 10 seconds ago but there they are, standing right next to him, apologizing for being late.
When he flinches, almost falling over in the process, they look at him confused asking him wrong as if they didn't just appear out of thin air.
To say you spooked him was an understatement.
He loves them with his whole being they need to stop appearing out of nowhere.
Tries to tell himself that they just have a teleportation stand or something like that, it eases his mind a bit.
If he ever finds out they don't actually have stand he's losing his mind.
When they start talking about the occult he tries to pay attention but it's hard sometimes since there's so much and he doesn't understand half of the words they are saying.
He’s a supportive boyfriend though!
Sometimes thinks they are purposely trying to scare him but that theory gets debunked quickly since they are often confused when he's scared.
One day while they were over at his house they spoke of an old man in a suit wanting to say hello to him. At first, he was confused and thought he was in trouble when he thought of his grandfather. He tells himself that it was probably just a coincidence but couldn't help but wonder.
┉ˏ͛ ༝̩̩̥͙ ⑅͚˚ ҉ ⑅͚˚ ͛༝̩̩̥͙ ˎ┉
Tumblr media
Unlike the others, he never actually grew up in a healthy environment as a child so doesn't exactly see certain things they do as all that weird. Just sort of happy to have someone, even if they have their weird little quirks.
Even with that, he is a bit unsettled by them at times.
Occasionally, when he would just see them standing around, he would have a wave of fear wash over him for a minute. He doesn't know why, but he felt as though he had seen something he shouldn't have, but he doesn't know what it was.
Sometimes he swears he can see shadows twisting around them at times. The overwhelming feeling that something is wrong without knowing what it is.
He loves them, he does, but everything that's happened so far has started to get concerning.
He wonders if they are even human at times.
They're lucky that Giorno is a part of the mob or else he probably would have accidentally punched the shit out of them with Golden Experience.
Starts to get worried with the amount of time they have crawled out of vents in his presence.
At least if he even has a mission where he has to interrogate someone he knows who to ask-
He just pretty much tells them to be themselves in the interrogation and, to no one's surprise, it works like a charm.
Although they are very confused about why the man is screaming for help. They only asked him a few questions.

Question about your DP AU but what are the main trio's families like? I think you've talked about Jack and Maddie a few times, but not in depth. Anything different between Sam and Tucker's parents? How much do the parents know about each other or what their kids are up to?
oof this topic is hard cause its been a long time since i watched the actual show (minus the two eps i watched to answer asks) and well, there really isn't a ton to work with regarding Tucker's Family. they seem nice. that's all we got. there's not even a "personality" section on their wiki page.
in the fandom, oddly enough, there's only one fic that comes to mind rn that had tucker's parents be semi-important (or at least, relevant) i can't remember the name rn but its like, "nobody knows au, tucker is a reluctant psychic who has to find a serial killer AU" which was a banger. i don't have a lot to go off of, so in all honesty I'm likely just going to make shit up to make things more interesting.
Tumblr media
(img description in the photo)
putting all of this in a read-more cause its loooong.
What we DO know is that Danny and Tucker were "best friends since forever" so, here they are as besties from like, kindergarten. We can easily assume Maurice and Angela (Tucker's parents) don't mind the Fenton's antics, or at the very least tolerate it enough to allow Tucker to be exposed to their strangeness.
Meanwhile Sam would be going to some Rich Kid school. To up the ante, my take has Sam do something so scandalous and horrifying that this rich family moves from New York to a small town in Minnesota.
Tumblr media
Sam isn't actually proud of it, but plays it off as if they are. cause like, yeah, their parents are never going to let them live it down. which is a success. We never learn what the hell happened, it's Sam's Noodle Incident.
Anyway to lay low from the shame of the event, they move to Ida's hometown (Sam's grandma) and it's Sam's punishment. They're "grounded for life."
To Jeremy and Pam's ignorance (Sam's parents) Sam is HAPPY to be away from the big schools and high end life. Not that they'll let them know that, like, ever.
Tumblr media
I have no idea if this is canon or fanon but there's the idea that Jeremy and Pam are too busy and negligent to be aware of what's going on in Sam's life. And as long as Sam isn't repeating the New York Incident, Sam is probably fine to do as they please. They know now to keep a low profile.
Jeremy and Pam hate the local Fentons, first for being Weirdos and then later for bringing in the ghosts. (Which honestly, like, fair...) Poor Danny and Jazz get lumped in, seen as bad kids despite just Existing within the family.
Tumblr media
The Only Normal Ones (tm)
For contrast, Tucker's family is middle class and very loving and attentive parents. Not helicopter level, but more than the average parent. Maurice and Angela keep track of Tucker's social media and worry about him -especially once the ghosts come out.
i won't go too into too much detail since i might make that fic, but I do want to give Tucker's family more importance and screen time. I won't be saying how but it'll be a nice development.
Tumblr media
Danny's family is the same as they are in canon on a surface level. Some details are changed, but we get a similar result.
So for context: pre-portal ghost sightings are rare and people are quick to either see it as: superstition, a hoax, or misunderstanding of natural phenomena. The Fentons believe there's a natural explanation -until some shared childhood experience throws them into believing the paranormal. But they hate how ghosts are seen as gimmicky. They believe in the REAL science.
They want to use Math and Physics to explain the supernatural. They believe in a different dimension with different laws of nature, and they're going to uncover it! And obviously, they do with the Portal.
They study it with the help of Vlad's funding (who's relationship is different in this AU -he's still an evil bitch as always tho) they create the portal and study it alongside Vlad's team. (This is my work around from keeping the Fentons away from the GUI) Their personal bias against ghosts is something more "neutral" rather than "evil."
Personally I think misguided science is more interesting than outright witch-hunting styled ghost hating. the core conflict is the same, but it makes the parents more rational and grounded to science. This is a personal preference, each have their strengths. Regardless they've got big egos and jumping into a literal Unknown field of science that has it's own new physics, of course they're going to fail and misunderstand things. (science is failure just written down or however that saying goes)

Hello anon I'm someone who has actual trauma surrounding the horror genre and yet still has the 'ooh this sounds fascinating' impulse! Here's a few things I've done to minimize the impact over the years
- find the topics that freak you out less. I handle paranormal horror way worse than I handle body horror. Cosmic horror barely freaks me out. Cthulhu? Mystery flesh pit? Got it in the bag. Anything with ghosts and hauntings though? That will fuck me up a bit.
- figure out which mediums are easier for you to consume. I almost never watch horror movies because having the visual in front of me gets into my brain more. Just the other day I read this book Bonechiller and it did freak me out a bit but as I was reading it I was noting that if it'd been a movie I would have been way more fucked up. I can barely even watch some episodes from the first season of Supernatural because the visual medium is too much for me. (This doesn't mean never engage with that medium, just take more precautions)
- ask friends for a synopsis. A few of my friends were telling me recently about this movie Oculus. I could literally feel my paranoia getting triggered just listening to them talk about it. Ergo, not for me. On the other hand, my parents told me in depth about The Shining before we watched it and I was able to say "okay, I think I might be able to handle this." Plus, knowing what would happen before hand helped minimize the impact.
- make the right environment for it. When I do watch horror movies or engage in paranormal horror, I make sure I'm in a comfortable situation. At home, people around, during the day (usually midday, absolutely no chance of dark before my brain can settle a bit), and usually with a comfort item or two around (a stuffed animal, my cat, my sketchbook, etc)
- if your anxiety/fear/what-have-you does get triggered, find things to lessen the impact. My problem is that once it gets dark, it's like a switch flips in my brain on what reality is. Logically I know in the daylight that this shit doesn't exist/won't harm me, but once it's night I just can't quite convince myself it's not out there looking to kill me. So to help me feel safer, I sleep with a strand of LEDs on in my room, if my paranoia gets triggered I'll ask one of my family members (usually my sister) to sleep/hang out in my room with me for a while, I'll get on my phone and talk to friends, I'll put on a super light hearted show like Glee, etc etc.
- keep in mind that while you may not be able to engage with something now, you may be able to do so someday. I do hope to watch Oculus someday, it sounds absolutely amazing. Maybe someday I'll be able to rewatch Annabelle (trauma related). Right now I know that's really not for me, but we as humans are constantly changing and someday I hope their impact on me will be lessened enough that I can engage with it.
I hope some of this can help a little bit! Horror as a genre has some truly fascinating stories out there and I wish you all the luck in figuring out how to safely interact with it!
Since this blog regularly talks about setting boundaries, any tips or ideas for how I can set boundaries about watching horror? I find myself morbidly curious and deeply entertained by online horror content more than any other content, and then find myself unable to sleep for months. The repercussions don't deter me and I should know better, but I have no self control about this. Has anyone else dealt with this issue and found a way to resist the draw when it negatively impacts mental health? I want to build down but I keep relapsing every time after long streaks of avoiding it.
--
I haven't dealt with anything quite like this. It doesn't seem like garden variety self harm compulsions.
You do genuinely enjoy this content while you're consuming it? Is the sleep problem nightmares? Maybe there's a way to mitigate this media's effect on you rather than trying to never consume it again.
Anyone have thoughts?

Day 3: So far, Professor Yakumo's class has been kind of weird. He's as eccentric as everyone says, but I learned some interesting stuff about his editing process. He doesn't believe in reshoots - maybe you can get some B-roll of the location or whatever, but once the cameras stop rolling, assume your actors won't come back for a second take. They're dead as the horror victims they're playing. Whatever you have on tape is what you've got. I don't know, maybe the Japanese film industry works on tighter schedules? Anyway, some good practical advice on how edits and insert shots can flesh out a story without needing to actually put the actors on camera.
Day 12: This week has been all about putting yourself in the mind of a paranormal investigator. Where have people mysteriously disappeared? What old legends might make for an interesting story? How do you gather information to frame the story for your audience? And most importantly, how can you make sure you don't become the next victim while you're investigating?
Seriously, he spent a lot of time on that. I know he's famous for his kayfabe persona, he pretends that he really did find those camcorders in a haunted forest or whatever, but I think assigning us a book on ofuda - Japanese warding talismans - is a bit much. I asked the TA and she was... kinda weird about it. Like, she seemed to agree that the professor is kind of crazy, but she also said it was important to study it anyway? Anyway, they're pretty and I filled up most of a notepad practicing.
Day 17: The class has taken a detour into a survey of world myths. There are so many legends about things that eat people that you wonder how anyone survived being outdoors at night before they invented electric lights. Anyway, there's a lot of stuff on finding common themes and "seeking out the essential terror at the heart of the story." I am once again not entirely sure if he's talking about how to portray these monsters to an audience or how to kill them.
Day 24: Professor Yakumo was really excited. Apparently he dug up an old legend about the college's steam tunnels, and he thinks it would be great to do a little field trip and show how his investigation process works. He's talking to the administration tomorrow.
Day 25: College nixed his idea. Apparently steam tunnels are actually kind of dangerous? Confined space, hot metal pipes, bad lighting, not meant for people to move around in. A few kids died down there, like, 20 years ago. So, not a great filming location, which is a shame, because the professor really seemed excited. Instead he gave us an extra credit project to give a report on a campus legend.
Day 27: Okay, I know that we're not supposed to investigate the steam tunnels, but it turned out it's a goddamn insane story. Two students were burned to death, one was never found, two teachers quit their jobs, the security guard who discovered the bodies committed suicide under mysterious circumstances. The college tried to bury the story as hard as they could, it seems, but if you look into old newspapers it was absolute panic. Most gruesome thing that happened in this town in decades.
Gah... I know it's a dumb idea, but I really want to see this place for myself. What the hell happened 20 years ago?
Day 28: My hands are shaking. Holy shit. There is something down there and it is not happy.
Start at the beginning: I went poking around the tunnels. They're supposed to be locked, but one of the entrances the padlock had rusted away or something. Anyway, went in with my cell phone and notepad, figured that I'd sort of poke around and get a sense for the atmosphere. Half the lights were gone or flickering, and the pipes make weird banging noises all the time, so it was super creepy. And then I realized that the bangs were coming towards me, getting louder and louder, and I just freaked out and ran for it. Something grabbed me from behind, and I just hit it in the face with my notepad on reflex.
There was a huge bang and a flash of blue light that tossed me down the tunnel, and when my head cleared, there was nothing there. My notebook was on fire. I stomped it out and got out of the tunnels as fast as I could. It looked like the back half of my notebook - where I'd been practicing making ofuda - had completely turned to ash.
Anyway, I'm alive, but I'm going to have a lot of questions for the professor tomorrow...
Plot Idea I’ve been kicking around for about thirty seconds- A horror-comedy following an upper-middle-aged eccentric Auteur filmmaker renowned for his found footage horror films. His “trade secret” is that he made every single one of his films by going out to the sites of actual supernatural massacres, recovering footage taken by victims, and editing it into coherent docudramas out of a commitment to publicizing the undelivered truths of those who died before they could get their stories out to the public.
Crucially, he’s very up front about his methodology, but everyone in the industry and media is under the impression he’s sticking to a Lemony-snicket-style framing device with impressive Kayfabe. Also crucial is that he’s under the impression that this is how all found footage horror films are being made, and his assistants take pains to keep him under that impression out of a real fear that he’ll start kicking in the doors of other horror directors out of anger that they’re muddying the waters.
(As an ancillary to this, he’s widely viewed as the single most dangerous person in the entire supernatural community, because in many cases actually recovering the footage entails beating down or outsmarting whatever killed everyone last time. Every one of his “film shoots” has a story attached that’s worthy of a movie in itself, but he suffers from a frustrating inability to center himself in a narrative- he’s a documentarian! That shouldn’t be done!)
The plot kicks off when he’s recruited by a struggling film school to teach a seminar on producing found footage films, still under the mistaken impression that a course in practical countermagic and combat archeology is a thing most aspiring documentarians will deliberately sign up for. It follows the the misadventures of his undergrad students as they gradually come to realize that none of this is either a found footage production course or a practical exercise in method acting.
