Will 4ever be on my hating canadians for acting like their culture and history is 100% seperate from the usa's. Like theyre obv different countries I acknowladge that but sometimes I see a non native person from canada talking shot to the us abt colonization. Girl the call is coming from inside the canadian boarding schools
#I always phrase this badly#and I talk abt the native aspect of it a lot but it rlly is a lot of it#Likeee. a lot of cultural or “us-specific” things Also Apply To Canada#yall will talk abt americans as a different breed as if like. You arent Right There#it wld be one thing if it was a country speaking a different language#or a much larger/spread out population (I mean Canada is Huge but no one lives in half of it)#both of which apply to places like mexico- there are some similar aspects between the southern US and northern mexico but both those#differences make it different enough that its still totally distinct#But like. when literally the only thing seperating u is a border and every1 lives Right There. excuse me if I insist there isnt that#much to diverge us

it's interesting that this seems to actually b a labelled cultural phenomenon; i've always felt it but never knew how 2 properly label it (other than the informal label of 'vira-latismo/complexo de vira lata' that i've seen other brazilians use, but it's not exactly the same thing). it's quite noticeable if ur a young person, especially so when ur in contact w/ us-americans... or native english speakers in general, rlly
it's especially noticeable in moments such as in group chats where literally all of the ppl in it might b brazilian, but if there is one native english speaker, we'll all immediately bend over backwards n start talking solely n only in english; even if the subject matter is not smth they'll understand due 2 regional differences (in fact, if we didn't, said english speakers would get extremely pissed off)
it's noticeable, too (n this one's not out of malice, 4 sure), when they think their own experiences n products r the default. even subconsciously like "oh my GOD mc how come u haven't tried/seen/experienced [extremely us american thing here]??? have u been living under a rock??", 2 which i have 2 explain that that is just straight up not a thing in my country at all. i've seen the linguistic n communication aspect too- i swear 2 god i'm not trying 2 seem like a pretentious asshole when i speak in big or archaic words... sometimes a language will have its direct, graphemically translated word, b smth that is not used in english so often.
just pls make an effort 2 understand that just cuz one knows a lot abt american culture n mannerisms, that does not an american make
DO NOT LET SOCIAL MEDIA TURN YOU INTO AN AMERICAN
#it's not all doom n gloom tho! shoutout 2 my friends who r trying 2 learn the basics of portuguese.#2 my friends who want 2 hear me talk abt my culture when i translate text n songs from portuguese -> english n leave cultural footnotes#who want literature n song recommendations from my own culture. thx. it makes me feel warm inside#srry 4 the long rant!#long post

Americans need to realize that most non-native English speakers actually don't know much about American issues. And language issues. If something is in a song, they ain't gonna analyze it.
I sorry I didn’t see this ask! so yeah to a certain extent I definitely understand that a lot of non-western/non-english speaking don’t understand the meaning of certain words and so sing along. theres rlly little knowledge abt a lot of issues such as anti blackness and racism in general (bc in Asia the majority is non-white and so white supremacy is less obvious and less talked about). regardless of if ppl should know about issues w anti blackness most ppl just don’t. they’ve never been called out for it, they’ve never rlly interacted w black ppl or black majority spaces online or irl. I understand ppl’s frustrations bc ‘the internet is open, etc’ but in the same way a lot of western kpop fans won’t know abt the problems w the education systems in Korea even tho they’re ‘interested’ in certain aspects of Korean culture, asian idols in return won’t know abt western centric problems e.g. antiblackness even if they have a large intl fanbase (not trying to equivocate the issues). and yes anti blackness exists in e Asia and more asians should know more about it but the fact is that they don’t. for a lot of idols getting criticised for shit like this is the first time they’ve been exposed to these issues esp for idols like tao who a) doesn’t have that large of an intl fanbase and b) never studied/lived abroad,
but this doesn’t mean it should be swept under the rug and ppl should ignore what he did bc ‘he didn’t know’ like just educate him??? the bigger a deal u make of it the more chance he’ll see and then won’t do anything in the future, maybe even do his own research as to why. yeah westerners need to realise that non-western non-English speakers (bc non-english speaking europeans should very much fucking know abt white supremacy and antiblackness) might not know abt certain issues but also they then need to be educated abt it
