IT'S FINALLY BEEN RELEASED (sorta)!!

"Chasing Rainbows" was a fanzine project that began in October 2016. The zine was themed around celebrating the dreams and ambitions of Gravity Falls characters. The name came from the fact every piece of art was coloured in such a way that when arranged in order, the zine would be coloured like a rainbow.

This zine was in the final stages of development, with orders being made and ready to ship, when it was announced that due to the main mod and organizer of the zine, Charles, being hospitalized, the remaining mods were unable to continue it. With that, it was cancelled and all people who bought a copy were refunded. And that was where the project essentially ended.

However, in the last post on the zine's now deleted Tumblr, it was stated that they hoped to release a digital version of the zine for free, as a way to at least complete the project in some form. However, that did not happen and no traces of a digital release ever surfaced. When I began my archival project for GF fanzines, I initially assumed this zine was lost. However, with that sliver of hope per the last Tumblr post, I began looking for a copy. Unlike other fanzines, this one did not have its mod team listed, so I contacted artists who originally worked on it for info. Many of them no longer are on Tumblr, making tracking them down more difficult. 

Eventually, through a few artists, I came to the conclusion that no digital zine was ever released. However, one of the artists, @wendinella on Tumblr, still knew the contact of Charles, the zine organizer. I managed to get in touch with them and to my excitement, they still retained the zine and was more than happy to share it to be archived and preserved.

This Zine here is, while not the final product, a near complete example of what it might have looked like. Charles attempted to contact old mods who worked on it for assets like the completed zine cover and merch meant to be sold with it in 2017, however none were able to respond. Therefore, this zine is released with what they had, which were a placeholder cover and thankfully, all the actual art, which is the more important aspect. 

I want to give a huge thank you to Charles aka @kaleidoreef for releasing this zine to be archived. Charles really wanted this to finally happen and I'm glad I can now provide it for all of you on their behalf. I also wanna thank wendinella for getting me in touch with Charles and all the other fan artists who worked on Chasing Rainbows who responded back to me. Intermediate witch - you're developing skills and techniques and can follow a written spell or ritual. Think of learning a skill like cooking or sewing where you know enough to follow a recipe or pattern on your own but perhaps still need those instructions to get from beginning to end of a project. The "why" is probably even more confusing because as you learn more, "why" becomes contradictory at times. You probably do a lot of reading and talking to other witches to learn more.

Advanced witch - you now have a strong core of knowledge, skills and resources to write/create your own spells and rituals. And explain WHY you made the choices you made. You know you may never reconcile all the contradictory "why" in witchcraft but you've developed a "why" behind your own practice. (Even if it's a weird why, it's there.) So, in the Knitting Guild, to be considered a Master Knitter, after demonstrating all the basic skills, you have to design and knit your own pattern, explain the why behind your choices and provide resources to back up your decisions. It seems witches should at least be able to do the same.

"Master" witch - at this level, you should have enough experience and knowledge to be able to evaluate the work of others, identify strengths and provide advice on how to improve weak spots. This means you likely have a broad range of knowledge of different practices outside of your own. Now, I know this idea is going to freak some people out but in writing, this is essentially your professional editor, not your opinionated writing group critic. An editor likely has an advanced degree and goal to make the writer's work as strong as possible. In witchcraft, this is likely a mentor, teacher or coven leader in a structure coven. At this level, you're doing pretty well and have probably stopped worrying about what level you're at.

Professional witch - if you report your witchcraft income to the IRS, you may be a professional witch. Less a skill level than an occupation level. These are the witches who write books, take on speaking engagements, teach classes, do public rituals and the like. Before approaching this level, you might want to consider that at this point, you're writing, classes and work is going to be open to be reviewed and critiqued by the public at large. With most of the previous levels, you'll make your mistakes in private (or with small group). Here, you're going to make them in public and might want to consider that the public still hasn't forgotten the Irish Potato Goddess.

I've read many Tommy takes care of Buck post-funeral fics (because I needed that to feel comforted after the fact) but I'd kind of like to see something like you said actually, like Tommy removing himself from Buck's life more

good for you! i'm always a defender of multiple writing choices all can be in character (especially for a show like weewoo where the characterization is an ongoing process) so i'm not saying one is right lol, especially for fanfic, you can do whatever you want forever!! sure tommy would comfort buck if that's what the story needs. it's just personally very boring to me lmao hdjsndk especially in this way where their relationship gets secularized away from buck's other dynamics bc i just don't see or like tommy as an exception in buck's life, if anything, i love his flaws in how he treats buck the most because it mirrors so much of what buck's experienced all his life from everyone, from his failed relationships, family, friends, found family, so he can be a great narrative tool for buck to finally have that emotional snap.

like there's something poetic about tommy entering buck's life as this display of what he should've had in a romantic relationship all this time, someone who makes him learn something about himself, someone who makes him feel safe, someone who fits in with all the other people in his life who make him feel safe day-in and day-out, but then the surface gets scratched once and tommy also falls into the pattern of treating buck like he knows what buck feels/wants/is doing better than buck himself. doesn't take his sincerity seriously and projects his own insecurities on him and makes him feel unsure. just what feels solid under buck's feet immediately becoming shaky ground once more where buck just doesn't know what to expect from the other side.

that's why i think tommy going no-contact and keeping buck in that uncertain place could be a great drive for buck to reach that snap of "i'm tired of everyone treating me like this" better than any other character. your best friends and your family where you're basically the youngest brother and with whom you're entangled so deeply is kind of easier to forgive and forget, revert to the safe space with only an acknowledgement of what happened. but a romantic partner of six months who already left you once is like what do i have to lose? like it's great breeding ground for buck's frustration imo bc this could be everything if they figure it out but also it is not everything yet where he's okay to mutually move on from their grievances like a family does with each other. it's like the best way tommy can serve buck's story.

and like i said, i think it would be very tommy to be like yeah i don't belong in this place after the funeral and seeing firefam together, taking that feeling with him and keeping himself away bc of a mix of guilt over pushing away the opportunity to belong in with them in the first place and his continued stubbornness that despite what buck says or does, tommy knows what he means better. it could work. god give me power to write smth 🙏

I started with "well both are impossible so write that down" and while I can't find a good transition from the joke into the text, I can't just remove it. Because it's true. Ignore how much I wrote just now.

I think it's harder to pass the audience's sniff-test when drawing, but it's harder to start writing and to be satisfied with one's writing.

When something is written poorly a casual observer is gonna be like “uhhhh idk it's kinda [something]” or even just accept it and carry on. This is based on a friend of mine who has read every villainess reincarnation manga, as well as more or less all of shonen. But when something is drawn poorly, whether it's anatomy or shading or something else, most anyone can tell at a glance, and usually they can point out what was fumbled to boot.

On the other hand, getting started and being satisfied with one's own work is the opposite. When you sit down to write, you have to actually write. If I wanna use a reference? Eat Shit, Me! Working patterns are complicated and hard to spot if you don't know them. There's nowhere NEAR as many good tools, and AFAIK none at all of the sort that exist for artwork - there's just no equivalent to perspective grids, the many ratio guides, or like the concept of using a reference image. I can photograph myself posing and trace my own joints - there's just no equivalent in writing.

Anyway I think creating things is a mass delusion, stuff just emerges from the ether probably. Ignore my bin of childhood sketchbooks and easily tens of thousands of words of abandoned writing drafts and dozen game projects including several that are very much playable, all of that without counting stuff I deleted or lost. Don't look at it.

nothing left (but some blood where the body fell) (808k) jily and Wolfstar. Many people consider it their all-time favorite marauders fic, and it's been HIGHLY recommended to me, and it looks so, so good.

Brave Face (470k so far) (please read Brave Face, it’s just amazing) is a WIP I’ve been following for a while, and holy shit. The Middle Path of the Moonlight (863k so far) another WIP, but I’m loving it so much.

Four to the End (2M so far) extremely long WIP, and it’s only in Year Four. It looks genuinely sooo good, and many people love it.

We Were Infinite (347k) a classic lots of people love. From what I know, it’s already past their years at Hogwarts, and the authors said they intend to finish it!

It Never Goes Out (473k) and When It’s All Over (666k) are two others that have been recommended to me before and seem like what you’re looking for!

Also All the Young Dudes (222k) (not the popular one, it’s by another author), and some people have said it’s really good!

These Four Kings (165k) (I’ve read this one myself!) the characterization is a little different from ATYD. Remus is a little softer, and Sirius is just SO overprotective of Remus, it’s extremely cute. Also, the take on the pranks here is more similar to canon, I’d say. It’s incomplete, but the ending works!

The Marauders Series, of course (haven’t read it myself, but it’s really popular and a lot of people love it), and The Shoebox Project (226k) obviously! I started reading this one and it’s SO GOOD, but I was having a hard time understanding the handwriting, so I stopped for a while but I want to go back to it so bad!

Up to No Good (423k) and The Lost Generation (546k) haven’t heard that much about these, but they’ve been recommended once or twice, and they look good! The Lost Generation has a satisfying ending, from what I’ve been told.

oh my heart goes out to you right now. disappointment in both personal and professional spheres at the same time? that's honestly one of the hardest things to navigate because it can feel like there's no safe space to retreat to when everything hurts at once.

first thing i want you to know is that you're not alone in this feeling. i went through something similar last year when a friendship ended the same week i lost a project i'd been working on for months. it felt like the universe was playing some cruel joke, and i spent days just existing in my pajamas, wondering how to even start picking up the pieces.

here's what helped me (and what i hope might help you too):

allow yourself to feel everything first. seriously. don't rush to "get over it" or "be positive" right away. disappointment needs to be processed, not skipped over. i literally had a designated crying spot (my bathroom floor) where i would just let myself feel awful for 20 minutes. then i could get up and face the day.

create tiny moments of control when everything feels chaotic. when both personal and professional parts of life are in shambles, focus on the smallest things you can control. make your bed. organize one drawer. choose a pretty outfit even if you're staying home. these tiny acts of order remind your brain that you still have agency.

find the narrative thread. disappointments are chapters, not the whole book of your life. journaling helped me see how these setbacks were actually redirecting me toward something that aligned better with who i was becoming. ask yourself: what is this disappointment making space for? what was i learning that i needed to know?

reconnect with the version of you that existed before these disappointments. what did she love? what made her eyes light up? sometimes we need to remember who we are at our core, beneath the layers of recent hurt. for me, it was rereading childhood favorite books and taking myself on little photography walks.

be ridiculously gentle with yourself. lower the bar temporarily. celebrate small wins. did you shower today? amazing. replied to one email? incredible progress. disappointment takes actual emotional energy to process, so treat yourself like you're recovering from something physical (because in many ways, you are).

find the others. disappointment can feel so isolating, but sharing your story (even just parts of it) with trusted friends creates bridges back to feeling connected. you don't need to trauma dump, just let someone know you're struggling and could use some company or distraction.

healing isn't linear. you'll have days where you feel like you're flourishing again, followed by random afternoons where grief hits you out of nowhere. that's completely normal, i promise.

the fact that you're reaching out shows me you already have the resilience to move through this. disappointment doesn't define you!! how you respond to it becomes part of your story, but it's never the whole story.

sending you the gentlest hugs and believing in your ability to not just survive this chapter but eventually find meaning in it. you're going to be okay, even if "okay" looks different than you imagined.

The woods tend to be a very dangerous place in this universe I will say-

12: Rosa has insane trust issues, and so ofc this is later revealed to be caused by chronic anxiety (as she is a bunny after all) and also bcuz it naturally comes with being a wolf, in this universe wolves r known for not trusting easily and only relying on the pack. (she's a bunny and a wolf fursona :3) when having panic attacks her heart rate goes dangerously fast and she often times passes out from it, so she copes with this by thinking of her wife to help slow her heart rate and calm herself down.

13: Annabeth, she's from another story plot universe whatever idk. She's a lil girl that gets lost in the woods and is adopted by a witch in an abandoned circus (witch just so happens to be hinted by cryptids n ghosts n stuff) so she cries very often, sence she's a small child (start of the story she's abt 7 or 8 and at the end of the first arc she's around 11 or 12).

14: Rosa copes by thinking abt her wife, lilac. Lilac doesn't tend to have any conflicts throughout her life other then the war, so she has pretty basic coping strategies (breathing in and out, meditation, etc). Annabeth copes by casting some protective spells or carving protection sigils, as it helps her feel safe. Trix copes by singing, humming, or just listening to some music.

15: I like to imagine Rosa finally meeting her breaking point, and essentially explodes. What I mean by this is she finally can't take it anymore and in the haze of her tears and panic and lilacs suprise and concern, she tells lilac abt her hurt. After she let's it all out I could see lilac comforting her, perhaps by making some tea, cuddles, or even just by guiding Rosa out to the fields and helping her lay down and rest on the soft grass :3

How do you write like you're running out of time? 😭🎶 teach me your ways 😭

HA! You think you're just throwing a compliment my way, but I'm going to answer this seriously.

What works for me may not work for you. Sorry about that. But here's what works for me:

Have an obsession.

Have a writing partner (or several). Either someone who actually writes with you or who consistently reads and encourages your writing.

Write for a long, long time.

Understand that it comes and goes in waves, and sometimes there are reasons for it and sometimes there are not.

Since 2018, I've kept a spreadsheet to track my wordcount. Take a look at the difference between this year (so far) and last year:

Note that my best weeks from 2024 don't match even my worst writing weeks of 2025. The spike of functionality at the end of 2024 was me preparing to do my Countdown to New Years; otherwise, I wrote one single story, and it took months, writing a couple hundred words a week. Then I watched Arcane over my '24 Christmas vacation and got obsessed (thank you, @monobuu, for that!) and started reading all the fanfic I could get my hands on, and then around mid-January this year I started writing and... kind of never stopped. But you can see that I'm currently on a downswing -- those several huge spikes were weeks that I was absolutely obsessed with getting Match Your Breath to Mine finished and literally writing in every spare moment I could steal; now I'm writing much more slowly across several projects while I catch my breath from that. (And also while I deal with a mild case of carpal tunnel syndrome.) ✨ Obsession! ✨

Writing partners are essential, too: Buu has helped me write some stories, and also I got @zillac to start beta reading for me and they've been an amazing writing partner; we haven't written anything together but we spend a lot of time bouncing ideas off each other and they've helped me work out so many rough patches.

And yeah. Write a lot. I wrote my first fanfic in 2014. And I wrote a lot of non-fanfic stuff before that, too.

(Do notice the actual numbers and not just the height of the spikes; the scale varies from year to year.) That huge dropoff toward the end of 2020 was when my best friend and co-author had a stroke. She was the one who kept me writing most of the time back when our mutual obsession was the MCU, so as soon as she wasn't able to keep pushing me, my output dropped fast. She died at the end of 2021 (and then my mom passed in early 2022) and grief (on top of pre-existing clinical depression) killed my writing even more for several years, aside from a few month in 2023 when I had an obsession with Sandman.

But even from 2018-2020, which were good years, you can see ebb and flow. I'm better at accepting that now -- a few years ago, seeing my current downswing would've put me into a panic tailspin of "oh god I'm losing my ability to write" but now it's just like... eh. It'll come back.

I'm still going strong on Arcane; part of that is that I got my depression meds adjusted, which gave me more energy to indulge my obsession. And a big chunk of it is knowing that people are reading what I'm writing and enjoying it.

This whole post is kind of disorganized and scattershot, but I hope it helps, somehow? Or at least informs.

Underhills was my first project, shortly after discovering the 24xx SRD and after struggling with doing a version with a broader scope, it's very focused: you play as the staff of hotel in an alternate fantasy 1940s Los Angeles, in a neighborhood where so many elves and other fantasy people have moved to make it into pictures that it's called "The Hollywood Underhills". Unfortunately you're a fantasy noir hotel, so there are always problems, from guests dying to guests coming back to life.

I'm currently back to work on that expanded version: Hollywood Underhills is currently in progress in the resistance engine.

My second project was for a FIST game jam and was recently updated with a new version. Agents of B.O.O. is about playing the members of an underfunded government agency dealing with the magical community- the Bureau of Occult Observation. (For obvious reasons they tend to introduce themselves as just working for 'the bureau' in the field.)

This has had a podcast based on/inspired by it...said podcast used D&D 5E as the basis, unfortunately.

When We All Lived in the Forest is a 24xx game, like Underhills, that was based on a couple of old tumblr posts I did years ago, and is probably the most downloaded/popular of these games, about being wanderers on the last road in the world, traveling through an endless forest after the world was devoured by trees and visiting the loop towns, safe havens where the road completely encircles a bit of land so the Things in the Trees can't get in.

Questing Beasts is another FIST game jam-inspired sourcebook: It's a post-apocalyptic world where someone decided that the Knights of the Round table was the perfect set of stories to try and unite the scattered population. The wandering knights recruited by the round table are often monstrous in appearance thanks to the apocalypse, and as a result have picked up the name that's the title of the game.

Scarytown is another 24xx game, and probably the one closest to the core 24xx experience, in that involves being cyberpunk crooks on a space station. It's inspired by a decades old Penny Arcade punchline and the idea of "hey, what happens when your corporate-owned space station goes bankrupt and the worst possible new owner picks it up: You've just been bought by the Spirit Halloween Scarytown corporation, and now your life is an orange and black and bad costumed nightmare. You've got to make enough money to get out of this place before they slip more Halloween-themed cybernetics into your contract.

Finally, my most recent project is another FIST game jam entry- this one was about liminal spaces, and the game jam description mentioned the Big Rock Candy Mountain. So Aint No Short-handled Shovels is a game about playing hobos and tramps and bums seeking signs of the fabled place where they hung the jerk that invented work and also investigating bits of the mountain that have leaked into the world- rumors of a cigarette tree growing at a whistlestop or a spontaneous lemonade spring.

Oh right almost forgot.

Friend: Oh so cool, what are those? New job, new business, new home, new relationship?

the worst thing for shyne was watching his family break apart in an unexpected way. they all held love and grew up together well back in manchester, even sharing some secrets of their own. however small things lead to fall out, illnesses and different career paths. for him home became small things then, like texting his brother, getting something from her mother or trying to make her seasonal and festive baked goods. otherwise he was personally just lost in writing to get through it all. "it does sound like a good place to be and safer is nice. i believe you are doing the right thing and maybe doing more than you or others might even know."

the bright smile that came to him as shyne was a bit more passionate about his book work then journalism just didn't make a career or name for any of it yet. "um - well, it's one of those loosely based off one's life type, but i'm also working on a couple others when i hit a rock with the main project. which there's a murder investigation one and some fantasy one just mostly for fun." ideas came at the craziest of times so he didn't mind slowly working on two other books, while having one he focused on the most. "that definitely happens a lot in so many work places. sometimes one mistake or one person and ruin the whole team even."

When Gabe was younger he had been the kind of person who always wanted to do the right thing. He had an unsteady homelife and just wanted to go into his adult years helping others. Somewhere along the way he got sucked into undercover work because he believed it would be helpful and it only got himself and the woman he loved into trouble. It nearly ended them. He had to admit that he was wrong and that being on desk duty was better. He also had to admit that being back in his home town and being able to just be a detective was better than anything he’d done in the past. At least he actually did get to help out. “ yeah I’m more in the investigative side now of things. It’s a lot safer which I’m a fan of but also I just feel for once like I’m doing the right thing “

Gabe didn’t have an opinion about connections or nepotism. The work would always speak for itself at the end of the day. And if he had the way to make some solid connections work wise Shyne should definitely use them. Especially if what he was doing was something he loved so much. “ honestly it can’t be bad to have connections if it’s something you genuinely love doing.
