I think we should teach kids about panic attacks and PTSD and stuff in school.
I went to a corn maze and got peer pressured onto a haunted hayride as a teen. I had some sort of PTSD or something driven panic attack. I was sobbing with my eyes closed in the fetal position. Luckily my older sister was there to rub my back and protect me.
I remember her saying to one of the actors "If you touch them, i'll kill you." which is pretty intense for her, she's not generally violent.
It took me another decade to have language to talk about my experiences with anxiety and I still don't know all of my triggers for whatever the fuck my intense panic attack like things I experience actually are
I really think it would be helpful to people to know about this stuff
#Like i thought it was just that i got scared from horror movies#but most people don't end up sobbing themselves to sleep from horror films#but also I can handle The Cabin in the Woods (the whedon film. obligatory fuck Joss Whedon)#and I had one after I watched Primer which is not a horror film#h2fox2.txt

Pride Month: Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (Commission for WeirdKev27)
Hello all my children now and welcome back to pride month which once again was way shorter than planned for this blog. I might do some extra queer reviews. It was still a good pride month: I finally got a bi pride shirt
My sister came out as trans, and in general it was a pretty good month. And whlie I've only gotten the previous review and another out, there's always time for queer content. But what I have gotten to this month thanks to kev's been great and today we cap off pride month with a spot of horror, something I honestly don't expect from Kevin. While he did have me do all of Evil Dead, it's the only horror franchise he expected and the blackening was my pitch. So with a busy schedule I haven't really gotten to dip into the big franchises i've wanted to cover. So when Kev asked me to do so, I took the sudden blessing to review a film from one of my franchises and a film this queer whose lead's role in this both ended his career but ultimately brought him peace later on.
Now I get most of you going to this are nightmare fans: you followed the tag etc. But since some readers may be less familiar like Kevin or my good friend @jess-the-vampire who watched the film with me, a brief primer: Nightmare on Elm Street was a 1984 film from horror legend Wes Craven, the film that made his career, put New Line Cinema on the map, and created one of the greatest horror icons of all time in Freddy Kruger, while injecting much needed new life into the slasher genre.
So naturally New Line wanted a sequel. Craven hadn't, already not liking the twist ended forcefully slapped onto the original nightmare where "Oops nancy didn't win after all", was still offered the chair which he turned down as he didn't like the scripts concept of Freddy going into the real world, feeling it'd dilute the character or the exploding bird that has nothing to do with the plot we'll circle back to later, from a script written by two faced motherfucker Howard Chaskin. We'll circle back to why he is later, but you should know up front he's a two faced mother fucker
So directing duties fell to Jack Shoulder of Alone in The Dark (The other one) and The Hidden Fame. Jack Shoulder.nt. For now he was a good director, and new line needed one. He also had no idea what the fuck he was doing, having to do a ton of effects shots he had no idea how to pull off. Thankfully riding shot gun was Kevin Yeager, creator of my favorite killer in all of horror.
Yes it's him who brought my baby way older than me boy to life, with the help of don mancini and brad dourif of course, but he created the real life doll and deserves as much credit as his fellow legends.
So Nightmare 2 came out and it did MONSTEROUS numbers. On a 3 million dollar budget , it made 30 MILLION. Ten time sit's budget. So New Line was still doing good but the mixed reception both for legit reasons (A switch up from the original, having nothing to do with the original per wes craven's wishes to not use any of the characters from the first, and Freddy in the real world) and the gay panic around the film. Nightmare on Elm Street 2 is one of the gayest slasher movies sisnce gay came to gay town, so let's get into WHY it's so gay, why it adds a lot to the film, the impact it had on it' star, and how the film itself is as a whole under the cut. All night long.
You've Got the Body, But I've Got the Brains
Before we can get into this movie's queerness, let's look at the film itself. If you haven't seen nightmare on elm street, please do it's excellent. One of horror's best despite a goofy bit here or there that clashes with the tone and some truly mind numblingly dumb parenting, which as you'll soon see is standard for the franchise and the one thing this sequel decided to esclate.
For those who haven't, the film followed Nancy Thompson, an average teen who is soon stalked in her sleep along with her friends by Freddy Kruger. As the film gradually reveals Freddy was a child murderer who got off on a technicality, so the local parents all burned him alive. He came back from the dead as a vengeful ghost demon man, brought back by dream demons that look like sperm who we as a fandom like to pretend don't exist. I won't go deep into his stalking of Nancy and her friends as like I said this sequel wasn't allowed to use them and i'd like to cover the original at some point. For now the bottom line is freddy was seemingly defeated, came back to strike nancy, but she somehow surivived as confirmed by this film, having been told by urban legend to have "gone crazy" after he boyfriend was hacked up to bhits.. which is a.. less than accurate version of what happened to glenn.
So the film opens up 5 years later: Nancy is a sequel non entity who left a diary we never saw her writing behind, and her house has been moved into by the walsh family. Our lead is Jesse, played by the incomprable mark patton, an average teen who opens the film as that awkward kid in the back of the bus, can relate
This is naturally a nightmare as Freddy's back for his revenge.... by possesing a teen who has nothing to do with nancy or his murder to get a body to. .become a living god with all his dream powers? Then take his revenge. The title makes only marginally more sense than why do this overcomplicated plan and "why didn't he do it last time", but Englund's still at the top of his game and the film really likes to do terrifying closeupfs of freddy's eyes, just both just starring at you. The makeup here is REALLY good and really horrifying.
So Jesse's stuck on the bus when it locks him and two giggling girls inside, who shriek when they get parked atop a cliff. The horror for this one uses more abstract art for i'ts inspriation, this using a very narrow cliff and a later one using salvador dahli's "Persitance of Memory" as it's base , swapping clocks for "everything jesse owns".
Jesse's been having nightmares since they moved and woke up scremaing each time. But this is `1985 so his family just ignores it and hopes it'll go away. His family consits of his hard ass dad, his mom and his sister, none of whoms names I care to remember. Played by Clu Galagher, Hope Lange and Christie Clarke respectively. All do a decent job but their mostly here as props: his mom worries about him, his hard ass dad is a grumpy dick constantly, and his sister is there to almost die later and get scared.
At School things are a mixed bag for Jesse: ON the one hand he has a sort of girlfriend in Lisa Webber, played by ken meyers, a rich girl who drives him to school every day and hangs out with him a lot and he soon gets a friend/possible partner? in Grady, a rough and tumble jock played to douchey but loveable perfection by Ron Rusler. Grady dosen't like Jesse at first for reasons and the two get into a wrestling match where Grady pulls Jesse's pants down exposing mark patton's ass for all to savor (Patton was 26 at the time, though it's still VERY werid to have this scene with a teenager and in general). On the bad end is Coach Schinder, your standard coach played by Marshall Bell who may or may not be a sexual predator but probably is, woh makes him do pushups, run laps and generally is just the worst.
The pushups do bond our new brochachos and honestly had Freddy not got involved i'm pretty sure he , Lisa and Jesse would be a throuple. Or he and jesse would be a couple at least. I mean they did pull each other's pants down. That has to be some form of second base. I'm only 5 years in to being a Man loving men and I still don't get all the mechanics. Don't get them all with women either. I'm a bi mess.
Jesse's dreams only intesify though, and we get some cool bits like the dali refrence, freddy opening his brains to show jesse , and the boiler room appearing in the walsh basement, Freddy's layer in life and in death. I also love the use of heat as a common denominator in freddy's possessions and dreams here: Given fire ended him, it works VERY nicely as a theme for the guy, from a furnace to jesse's stuff melting to an exploding bird.
Okay time to finally circle back to the exploding bird which dosen't work in any way shape or form but is still funny. First off as PushingUpRoses pointed out and Jess helpfully reminded me, birds tend to get a raw deal in horror with thier deaths not mattering as much or tommy wiseau becoming one
The recent film The Watchers at least corrected this as the bird Dakota Fannig was escorting before the woods kidnapped her is kept with her the whole film, survivies the film (Not saying if Dakota and co do or not, watch it it's pretty good if with a wobbly third act), and while not a major presence is still a nice visual calling card for the film.
Bird Ethics aside, the point is one of the walsh birds murders the other, attacks Grumpy Ass Dad Man, and then explodes
So Grumpy Ass Dad man naturally assumes.. Jesse did it. Despite a cherry bomb not working that way and Jesse being as shocked as anyone. Your son did not shove a payload of explosives up a bird's ass good sir. What are you on. Jesse storms away and Grumpy Ass Dad Man wants to fight him. He also got defensive earlier about not telling Jesse they live in a murder house after grady spills the beans.
Things progress and Patton.. is a fucking marvel in this film. Seroiusly his facial acting is top notch and the guy can scream like no one else, making me sad what happened after the film, circling back to THAT in a bit, all teh sadder. There's a deep sadness to jesse, an awkard teen struggling with his possible sexuality (Subtext Patton portrays greatly), a monster trying to literally tear his way out of him, and confusoin about what' sin him, all while no one really helps him: Lisa continuly assures him it was "just a dream", which it is not as Freddy's glove ends up outside at one point and things soon escalate to the point it couldn't possibly be, his dad thinks he's on drugs, and his mom just.. worreis a bit. Grady isn't super helpful, partly because he's a macho weirdo who asks if he's mounted Lisa yet and .. well i'll let him tell us why he's grounded.
We get no context for this and that just makes it all the more hilaroiusly batshit. Rob Russler is fantastic.
We feel that same powerlesness nancy felt: just as the first film was a metaphor for how adults often let teens down by not listening to them as threats claw at them, here it's how Adults and one's peers can often be unhelpful against internal struggle: Jesse is slowly loosing control of himself, possibly loosing his mind as far as he knows, and has this .. thing stalking him in his dreams.. but like Nancy no one can accept the truth. The subtext jesse is closested, either gay or bisexual (possibly pan) onlly adds to it: in a time as homophobic as the 80's staying in the closet isn't a choice: it's the only way for someone Jesse's age without the money to live on his own to survive. His dad is already an asshole man, he'd be even worse if he find out Jesse liked going inside literal assholes. Patton spends the film with a dour look, on the verge of cracking and only getting worse as Freddy takes more than more control.
The possesion element.. is great. It is mildly troubling iwth the gay subtext: having Jesse's fear of his queerness be repreesnted by a serial killer wasn't a good idea.. but the film still works regardless of that, in part because Freddy could represent Jesse's fears of being gay: all the sterotypes, horrible things said about gay people manfested into a gross abomination with a blood lust. All of poor jessee's shame over who he is, shame he never should've had but society forced on him, making him into this beast. Granted it's hurt a bit by his sorta girlfriend later getting jesse to expel him with the power of love, but given the film end son a nother cliffhanger, with freddy not defeated if seperated from Jesse, more on that later, it says to me at least that you can't defeat wh oyou are.. only oyu can fight your own self doubt and accept it.
Eventually Freddy gets to the murdering: Jesse wonders out in a fuege state and an underated aspect of nightmare 2 is it's dreamlike quality: like the original, the film has this dreamlike atmosphere, but goes farther with it: things lke a snake suddenly appearing on jesse, the bird exploding or jesse going to a gay bar gay bar are all left vauge: was he dreaming? is he sleepwalking? how much happened and how much was a dream? With the film not relying on the series iconic dream kills, it allows it to really play with things. Did ANY of this happen by the end? For a slasher. it's ambitious, brilliant and a joy to watch.
So he winds up at a gay bar gay bar gay bar. Or a leather bar. Either way i'd want to go. His coach finds him there then.. makes him run laps. Beofre he can get to child predator stuff though, Freddy does what jess called "pulling a matilda on him" as he suddenly has telekensisis kyle and whips the coache's bear ass before whipping him to death.
This dosen't help as next night after some more stuff we can gloss over, Jesse overs over his sister.. wtih glove in hand. Freddy nearly killed her and jesse is left a begging wreck. He tries to get Kim to undrestand at her dope pool party, but she only wants to fuck it out of him and freddy's tounge showing up tells Jesse that's not an option. He goes to grady who in the bluntest line tells jesse when he says something wants my body "Yeah she's female and waiting at the cabana and you want to sleep with me"> Which yes, yes he does but that's not the point.
Tragically.. Grady dies after Freddy claws his way out of Jesse in the film' sbest sequence and best kill. Rusler nails it with Grady's sheer fear nad begging being horrifying as nothing can save him and the sleeper awakens and slashes Grady to death. The horror in this flim is underated: even I underated it first time I watched it but on second watch while the film dosen't have as many jaw dropping set pieces as the first
Jesse goes to lisa.. but freddy kills her fish, sets a lamp on fire and emerges. This leads to the infamous pool party scene after a really tense underated scene of Freddy stalking Lisa in the cabana.
This scene was one of the main reasons Craven didn't want to do the film, feeling this exposed how short englund was. And first watch I found it goofy as hell... but on second.. it sinks in what freddy's really doing chasing the teens: he's playing with them. The same way he does in his dreams. I do admit, Freddy in the real world isn't AS terrifying on concept.. but the film finds a way to make it so with something I missed the first time: FREDDY IS STILL A GOD HERE. By coming to our world the way he did, he apparently kept his powers. He can still teleport to a degreee, makes the pool boil over, the gates too hot to touch. He may not be able to shapeshift, though in fairness he only shifted his arms in the first one so he may not have been able to period yet, but his fire powers more than make up for it, a jet of flame interuppting as he iconicaly declares
Yes the setting itself is a bit cheeesy.. but ti works. Freddy isn't chasing them because he's devolved or has less methods, he could probably burn them all. .h'es chasing them.. because he's a sadistic bastard. Always has been, always will be. He didn't HAVE to puree Glen
But he likes making a sport of it. His kills in the first.. are all horrifically ironic, if more subtle than he would be from 3 onward. I hate to spoil them for those new to the franchise, hi kevin, but it's needed for comparisons sake: he dragged tina's corpse across the celing, hung up rod in his prison cell with his own bedsheets and ... whatever it is your looking at right now. While this was all revenge there's no illusions that freddy isn't a sadistic bastard who makes a spectacle of his victims. He's smart enough in cases that aren't blood fountain to make it look plausable to the folks who find the corpses, as being widely known would make it harder to do this (as shown by Freddy Vs Jason), even with the wilfull ignorance of Elm Street's parents already helping a ton.. but he likes to drag it out. He likes to make it as horrific as possible. The films after this emphasise this with him finding some way to twist both their fondest dreams and greatest nightmares into something, from slamming someone who badly wants to be famous into a tv while welcoming her to prime time, bitch, using a pupeteers veins for strings, making an aneroxic eat herself to death or having an invisible karate fight with a karate man because they ran out of budget, this shit is his art.
So while him slashing people with his glove isn't super artful as these. .it fits as the "piece" he's doing here while tearing these teens to pieces.. is getting to kill SO many at once, using his powers to herd them like cattle while he gets to be the butcher. And he hasn't lost his touch as an idiot trying to reason with him like this was a monster movie and no ta guy slashing people with a glove, gets slashed and thrown into a fucking grill. While it clearly took TIME to posses jesse, he didn't HAVE to announce himself during it (That we're aware of) or try and kill his sister. He loved making this poor kid painfully aware that he's taking control and everything Jesse knows and loves will be dead when that happens. He gave him his body back after Grady ONLY to let the poor boy cry and scream in anguish at what Freddy had done with his body and wonder right where Freddy wanted. Freddy.. is a monster, literally and figuratively and this film captures that beautifully. I will say his dream powers are better than "whatever heat related powers the writers want", no question, but given the series later decline to thinks like super freddy and the power glove, it's easy to go back to this one and see the craft putting into making freddy terrifying.
The body possesion thing works too: like I said Jesse is a prisoner in his own body, either trapped deep in his subconcious or again, given Freddy sucks, probably forced to watch. The idea of not being in control of your body is terrifying and Jesse covered in Grady's blood is just horrifying. It's not the same as the original, true.. but it's fantastic all the same.
That said the ending.. is a bit of a disapointment. We get all this build up, even Lisa's Dad shooting him dosen't stop freddy.. and the climax. .is lisa confronting freddy alone at the old steel mill he used, telling Jesse "it's all in his head, he can control it power of love blah blah blah" and Freddy's just .. defeated. Now i'll give the film some slack: while it gets shit for this ending and deserves it, deflating a well crafted terrifying build up with "I love you so you can escape him", this series... seems to suck at endings. I've only seen the first three, so I can't fully say, but i've seen enough reviews of the later ones and heard enough to a least get the sense none of them know how to defeat freddy in a way that's both convincing and sets it up for sequel. Even the first one, as much as I love it, has Nancy luring freddy out and using home alone traps, which is a WAY bigger blow to his dignity than hardrock rooftop poolside vilas ever were. There are exceptoins: 3, New Nightmare and Freddy Vs Jason have and seem to have banger endings. But for the most part it's some convient deus ex machina to beat freddy that either never came up before or is vaugely hinted at. It's why I do lean toward the chucky franchise a bit: while Chucky's never truly beaten for good, the final battles with him always feel climactic and big. Even 3 , the worst of the films i've seen, has chucky get ripped to shreds by an unreaslitic carnival ride. With Freddy.. the scale on him's so big it's hard to find a way to convincingly put his ass down, even temporarily but they never seemed to try that hard either.
It dosen't help they just.. repeat the same "Is it really over HA HA BITCH IT ISN'T IT REALLY ISN'T EXPECT TO NEVER GET CLOSURE ON THIS SCENE" ending as the last one. It does at least have a bit more style as it's Jesse once again getting on a buss, with Tina assuring him thigns are okay and her friend talking about "what a wild party that was" and brushing off people died horribly from a weird claw man which...
Tracks. Then it turns out OH NO FREDDY'S DRIVING THE BUS AGAIN.
THE END
JESSE FUCKING DIED I GUESS
It's the same ending as the last one minus the implication everything was a dream and the horribly fake freddy hand. Now Jesse COULD'VE survivied and just skipped town which given his dad... probably a smart move long term. Nancy was trapped in a speeding car made of freddy Kruger and lived somehow. Like Jesse's ultimate fate, they never really explained how Nancy survived. This film confirms she did as Grady, master of sympathy he is, probably would've mentiond her death too, and the next film has her come back in full, but they never explain HOW, and never touch on Jesse again as the franchise tends to pretend like this flim dosen't exist.
And that's a sad fact of the film: It was an evolutionary dead end. Rewatching it.. it's fantastic. It's not as good as 2 and 3 which have more realistic adult characters who are still useless, but feel like actual people with Nancy's mom being an alcholic, her dad being a hardass if not an asshole man like Jesses, and the jerkass nurse at the mental institute having at least reasons for her distrust of nancy as to defeat a dream man, nancy had to do some sketchy shit. Their not good people, but they come off more as people and not a cardboard cutout, his wife and a bad sterotype of queer people being accused of being pedophiles. The film also has weird shit like the birdsplosion, the snake and drags at times, while Lisa feels VERY underwritten and the ending half assed and lazy. It's not perfect.. but rewatching it let me see the films good sides: it's queer subtext, which we're almost to, is well done for the most part, Mark Patton is fucking amazing as are Robert Englund and Robert Rusler, the effects are fantastic especially on a low budget and the concept is well thought out and creepy. The film is an oddball in the series.. but it's one that tried new things and gave us an atmospheric, creepy and throughly gay horror film. So on that last part
Scream, Queen!
Sooo there's no easy way to do this so i'm just going to come out and say it: This is one of the gayest films I have ever seen
It's why we're here, it's why it's my finale for pride month, it's why Kev had me review it, and it's why for better or worse this film is remembered. It has other layers I mentiond: Mark Patton's performance is, after this rewatch, one of my all time faviorite's in horror, great effects, a trippy atmosphere, and Freddy at some of his most terrifying. But let's be frank: if this film is remembered, it's not because of any of those valid reasons.. but for the simple reason of
Before we even get into metaphor the film has TONS of shirtless scenes of Mark Patton, with most dream scenes having him shirtless or in his underwear. His first meeting with Grady ends with Grady pulling down his pants while they wrestle , exposing his butt to one and all. He goes to a leather bar in his dream. His coach is a pedophile, which is a very harmful sterotype and a very harmful thing to conflate. Grady outright lampshades that Jesse wants to spend the night with him instead of an eager to bone lisa. He says "somethin'gs inside of me". The film is not subtle.
And yet.. it also is? Jesse's metaphor of feeling uncomfortable contsnatly, trying to be who people want by having sex or dating but not being able to, being afraid of what he is and as I mentioned the metaphor of freddy as everything he fears about being an out queer person in a time when they were often blamed for hate crimes against them, to the point For Better or Worse writer Lynn Johnston wrote a whole arc in the strip about a longtime character coming out because a close gay friend of hers died and the police SYMPATHIZED WITH THE MURDERER. Jesse is in a constant gay panic: Is he bi,? is he gay? it's hard to tell because he can't accept himself or what he feels, and like Freddy tends to do, he gloms onto that fear to feed himself.
The film is gay as hell and for 1985 it's a bold statment: looking back it's impossible to not see HOW gay it is and that's a good thing. However HOW the queerness was implimented.. was a very bad thing. And i'm not just talking about the pedophile teacher which is bad and maybe having freddy whip him to death was a bit... much. Then again...
Maybe that ship had sailed for this franchise.
No i'm talking about the fact writer David Chaskin is a two face mother fucker. Told ya we'd circle back. See Shoulder.. had no idea the film was gay.. or claims he dosen't. Given how well directed the film is and how we get a full shot of Mark Patton's glorious ass I will never let you forget about, I have doubts he REALLY didn't know. But given NO ONE at new line caught the subtext till it was out except maybe Robert Englund, it's just as likely he was THAT oblivous and included the random ass shot without question. Also to clarify i'm not sayin ga shot of a man's ass is inherently gay.. but i'm saying it is when he's wrestling anothe rman while trying to also remove HIS pants. Context is king.
See making the film gay.. wasn't a bad idea. Chaskin wanting the mostly hetero teens wawtching to get being gay wasn't bad and the gay teens to feel accepted..was noble. It was how Chaskin handeled the backlash over the film being gay that makes him a monster.
A film this queer naturally got gay panic, not helped with the open homophobia brought about by the AIDS crisis shortly after. So Rather than... admit this was his idea, Chaskin instead blamed Patton.
This.. Was a dick move on so many levels but the biggest was.. patton's sexuality was an open secret. As the only openly queer person in the room, he was an easy target and Chaskin knew it. It saved Chaskin's career but only made what was already a hard time in LA for Patton worse. As I found out via an interview with Plus magazine, Patton already wasn't super happy in LA, having his agents dictate what he wore and unlike his time in new york, not being able to be openly queer as agents were, and I shit you not he really said this and I can sadly fully belivie it, scoping out clubs in west hollywood to tank the careers of people up for parts against their clients. They didn't let him interview with a queer magazine.
So Nightmare had come at an already stressful time for the man, as patton said in the article, which you can find here
“By that point, AIDS was all around me. Everyone I knew was getting sick"
And when it caame to Chaskin's bullshit Mark said
“David would just blame me any time it came up alluding to something along the lines of, Well, he’s a big old fag and he chose to play the part in a big old fag way.’”
This all came to a head with an audition for an abc sitcom, the whole horrifying situation here, which I found about on Patton's wikipedia entry (and might of come up in the film, it has been a bit), is what lead me to the article.
“It was what I would consider my last true hardcore audition,” Patton remembers of nearly getting a part as a gay character on CBS. He was sitting a table with nearly a dozen other men. “They began to ask me if I would be comfortable playing a gay character and telling people I was straight if they began to question my sexuality? I remember looking around that table and I knew every one of those men were gay. All I could think about was how everyone I knew was dying from AIDS and we were having this bullshit conversation. My heart just broke and that was the line for me. I knew I would never be able to do what they were asking, so I walked away from Hollywood and decided to move on to a place where it was totally acceptable to be gay.”
So Mark became an interior decorator and while he was happy life wasn't finished beating the poor man upside the head as he then got diagnosed with AIDS
“I found out on my 40th birthday and three days later I was in the hospital,” Patton says. “But because of the infections I had, they made me take tuberculosis medicine and that didn’t mix with those older HIV meds. There were so many side effects. It was like I was poisoned. ” He pauses for a long moment before he continues. “I almost died there, but thankfully my friends took me to an AIDS health clinic, which saved my life.”
Seriously I can't thank the Plus article enough. So Mark survivied, found love with his husband Hector Morales Moondragon, and now sells art in mexico.
It was in this calm, happy phase of his life, after all this bullshit.. that he FINALLY made piece with the film that had caused him so much strife. He was approached to be interviewed for Never Sleep Again, an exaustive documentary on the Nightmare franchise I highly recommend, and in doing so finally told his side... and as a result with many now knowing he was still alive and still out there, it got him on the convention circuit. Somethign the documentary emphasises, as well as the plus article.. is how cathartic that was for Mark: after years of his film being mocked "The Gay One"... it got embraced as the gay one. The gay community had embraced the film, many being awakened by patton in it, and warmly embraced their scream queen.
Patton is still hanging in there: last year he had to GoFundMe for a liver operation and his health is rough.. but he's alive, in good spirits and well loved: By his husband and his fans. And as one of his fans... I wanted to spotlight Mark's story because i'ts a tragedy.. but it ends in triumph. Mark left a place he wasn't accepted to find love , acceptance and ultimately peace. Chaskin.. never actually apologized, still hasn't and didn't show up in Scream Queen despite mark's best efforts, but fuck him: Patton found peace, people found themselves in this movie, and I personally enjoyed it. The writer sucks but it can't take away from the deft direction or patton's performance. I hope Mark does better and gets to act at least one more time, and I may review his other film swallow next pride. For now stay proud, thanks for reading and to mr patton personally.. thank you.

Film is a work of art in the form of a series of live images that are rotated to produce an illusion of moving images that are presented as a form of entertainment. The illusion of a series of images produces continuous motion in the form of video. The film is often referred to as a movie or moving picture. Film is a modern and popular art form created for business and entertainment purposes. Film making has now become a popular industry throughout the world, where feature films are always awaited by cinemas. Films are made in two main ways. The first is through shooting and recording techniques through film cameras. This method is done by photographing images or objects. The second uses traditional animation techniques. This method is done through computer graphic animation or CGI techniques. Both can also be combined with other techniques and visual effects. Filming usually takes a relatively long time. It also requires a job desk each, starting from the director, producer, editor, wardrobe, visual effects and others.
Definition and Definition of Film / Movie While the players who play a role in the film are referred to as actors (men) or actresses (women). There is also the term extras that are used as supporting characters with few roles in the film. This is different from the main actors who have bigger and more roles. Being an actor and an actress must be demanded to have good acting talent, which is in accordance with the theme of the film he is starring in. In certain scenes, the actor’s role can be replaced by a stuntman or a stuntman. The existence of a stuntman is important to replace the actors doing scenes that are difficult and extreme, which are usually found in action action films. There are many other popular genre films, ranging from action films, horror films, comedy films, romantic films, fantasy films, thriller films, drama films, science fiction films, crime films, documentaries and others. That’s a little information about the definition of film or movie. The information was quoted from various sources and references. Hope it can be useful.
❍❍❍ TV FILM ❍❍❍ The first television shows were experimental, sporadic broadcasts viewable only within a very short range from the broadcast tower starting in the 1930s. Televised events such as the 1936 Summer Olympics in Germany, the 19340 coronation of King George VI in the UK, and David Sarnoff’s famous introduction at the 2020 New York World’s Fair in the US spurred a growth in the medium, but World War II put a halt to development until after the war. The 19440 World MOVIE inspired many Americans to buy their first television set and then in 1948, the popular radio show Texaco Star Theater made the move and became the first weekly televised variety show, earning host Milton Berle the name “”Mr Television”” and demonstrating that the medium was a stable, modern form of entertainment which could attract advertisers. The first national live television broadcast in the US took place on September 4, 1951 when President Harry Truman’s speech at the Japanese Peace Treaty Conference in San Francisco was transmitted over AT&T’s transcontinental cable and microwave radio relay system to broadcast stations in local markets. The first national color broadcast (the 1954 Tournament of Roses Parade) in the US occurred on January 1, 1954. During the following ten years most network broadcasts, and nearly all local programming, continued to be in black-and-white. A color transition was announced for the fall of 1965, during which over half of all network prime-time programming would be broadcast in color. The first all-color prime-time season came just one year later. In 19402, the last holdout among daytime network shows converted to color, resulting in the first completely all-color network season.
❍❍❍ formats and genres ❍❍❍ See also: List of genres § Film and television formats and genres Television shows are more varied than most other forms of media due to the wide variety of formats and genres that can be presented. A show may be fictional (as in comedies and dramas), or non-fictional (as in documentary, news, and reality television). It may be topical (as in the case of a local newscast and some made-for-television films), or historical (as in the case of many documentaries and fictional MOVIE). They could be primarily instructional or educational, or entertaining as is the case in situation comedy and game shows.[citation needed] A drama program usually features a set of actors playing characters in a historical or contemporary setting. The program follows their lives and adventures. Before the 1980s, shows (except for soap opera-type serials) typically remained static without story arcs, and the main characters and premise changed little.[citation needed] If some change happened to the characters’ lives during the episode, it was usually undone by the end. Because of this, the episodes could be broadcast in any order.[citation needed] Since the 1980s, many MOVIE feature progressive change in the plot, the characters, or both. For instance, Hill Street Blues and St. Elsewhere were two of the first American prime time drama television MOVIE to have this kind of dramatic structure,[4][better source needed] while the later MOVIE Babylon 5 further exemplifies such structure in that it had a predetermined story running over its intendevd five-season run.[citvatio””&n needed] In 2007, it was reported that television was growing into a larger component of major media companies’ revenues than film.[5] Some also noted the increase in quality of some television programs. In 2007, Academy-Award-winning film director Steven Soderbergh, commenting on ambiguity and complexity of character and narrative, stated: “”I think those qualities are now being seen on television and that people who want to see stories that have those kinds of qualities are watching television.

♡ . ˚ ◝ constance wu, thirty-eight, cisfemale, she/her ↷ in level ten, apartment 1202 you’ll find cosima lo listening to would that i by hozier. they have been living in wisteria apartments as a filmmaker for three years. during that time they have earned the reputation of the auteur. it makes sense you know, they can be brilliant + indefatigable but let’s not forget they’re pretty critical + stubborn. chiaroscuro, cresting waves, swiss watches. ×
Trigger warnings for car accidents, death.
Cosima’s early childhood was idyllic. She and her four siblings were born in Berkeley to Edith Wang and James Lo, archaeologists who travelled frequently. Their parents, were open-minded, curious people who wanted their children to be the same way and encouraged them to pursue whatever they were interested in.
Edie and James were also big film fans, and it was thanks to them that Cosima got the bug. After she was given a Super 8 camera for her birthday one year, she knew she could never be anything else.
When she thirteen, her parents and twin sister Delphine died in a car accident in Greece, which Cosima narrowly survived.
A part of her might as well have died with her parents and twin, and things only got worse once she and her siblings moved in with their grandparents, with whom she had a fraught relationship. Cosima’s teenage years were honestly pretty hellish, and she doesn’t remember them fondly. (Although they did influence the themes that occur in a lot of her work.)
Cosima started out with a couple of award winning short films, and her first feature was a self-financed micro-budget film (like Shane Carruth’s Primer or to a lesser degree Nolan’s Following) that unexpectedly won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.
Her second and third films were also small (in the 1-10 mil range) budget arthouse indies. Both were noted for being visually striking and daring. Critics loved them, and they established Cosima as an important new director. But they were also hardly tentpoles.
Her fourth film, while having a lot in common with her others, actually gained mainstream success and made a lot of money at the box office (it was probably a horror film). It was nominated for several oscars: picture, director, original screenplay, actress, cinematography, editing, score, sound mixing, and production design, and won two or three of them.
Cosima is also the creator of a popular high concept sci-fi drama on HBO, and has produced several films outside of her own. (Her fifth feature, an ensemble psychological drama about a cult is currently in post-production and will premiere at the Venice Film Festival).
As you might have already guessed, she’s a complete workaholic, even by the standards of filmmakers. Cosima hates boredom almost as much as she just really loves her job (as stressful and frustrating as it can be).
She’s also quite the perfectionist. She’s never really satisfied with herself (although as she’s gotten older it no longer manifests as self-hatred) and always wants even the tiniest details to be exactly right. Her distinctive style/aesthetic and attention to detail are a hallmark of her work.
Cosima is blunt and doesn’t suffer fools. She just doesn’t have the time. It can come off as intimidating, although she doesn’t really mean to be and is a big softie when you get to know her. She’d do absolutely anything for her friends and family.
She’s very inquisitive and curious, likes to have knowledge of a wide range of things.
Like this to plot!

ig live — getting ready with me.
Checking if she was live, Jade smiled towards the camera as she raised her hand for a moment. “Hi everyone. Sorry for not announcing this live beforehand, but I didn’t know I was doing this until like five minutes ago. I’m getting ready to go out and I thought it would be a good idea to talk with you and answer some questions while I’m doing that.” She looked through her make up bag, taking only a moment of searching before she found the foundation. “I’ve already applied the primer, I’m gonna do foundation now. You can go ahead and ask anything you wanna know, as long as it’s not too personal.”
“How are you?” She read, a smile appearing on her features. “That’s nice of you to ask that first. I’m great, honestly. Living my best life. I’m writing a lot of songs, spending time with some of my favorite people, being on tour and singing my music... can’t imagine a better life right now.” Looking in the mirror she began applying the foundation, though she paused immediately after. “Disclaimer, I’m not a make up artist. I don’t know if I’m doing this the right way, I’m just mirroring what I’ve seen my own make up artist do.” Continuing, she didn’t say anything else until she finished the coverage.
“Moving onto concealer now,” she stated as she opened the liquid concealer and applied a few lines under her eyes. She then turned towards her phone to read the next question. “What songs have I been obsessed with lately? Hold on.” Grabbing her computer, she opened her most recent Spotify playlist. “Bloodline by Denise is my fucking jam, she’s incredible. The entire album is great, honestly. Don’t Worry ‘Bout Me by Luana is also a favorite.” Seeing some of Julian’s songs on there, she decided it was time to close the playlist. She had given them enough reasons to believe they’re together without saying one of her favorite songs is a song that was written about her. “There’s a lot of them I like. I can make a playlist if you guys are interested.” She finished dabbing the concealer then moved onto the next question.
“Have I written a song with anyone lately?” Choosing a light pink blush for her next move, she selected the right brush from her set and lightly applied the make up over her cheekbones at the same time as she replied. “I’ve written a song with Ofelia, and another one with Chasity and they’ll both be released eventually, in case you’re wondering.” She didn’t mention the other person she’s been writing songs with, since she knew they wouldn’t let it go for the rest of the live if she did.
“Twitter or Instagram?” An uncomfortable smile appeared on her lips. “You don’t want my answer to that, I’m going to be mean.” Closing her blush, she looked towards the camera. “In all honesty, I prefer actual human interaction. Social media is great for interacting with fans, but it’s not my favorite. That’s why I’ve been distancing myself from Twitter lately. I’ve just found I feel much better when I prioritize spending time with people and limit the time I spend on my phone. If there’s a piece of advice you should take from me, it’s that one.”
Grabbing her highlighter, she looked towards her phone again to read the next question before focusing on the makeup. “Would I accept acting in a film?” Jade shrugged her shoulders. “I'm not sure. Depends if the film meant a lot to me. I would definitely have to take some acting classes before that, but why not?” She stopped applying her highlighter, setting down her brush for a moment. “Though I have to point out I wouldn’t push my singing career aside. Music is the priority, no matter what else is there.” Once she finished with that step, she chose a palette of gold tones and continued with the eyeshadow.
“What do I think about what headlines are saying about me?” She huffed, shaking her head subtly. She was staring in the mirror as she applied her eyeshadow, but that didn’t last long because she couldn’t prevent herself from staring at the camera as she voiced her thoughts. “Frankly, I don’t give a fuck. You can quote me on that. I’m living my life and I’m being myself, and if that bothers anyone, it’s not my problem. I’m happy where I am right now and I’m not going to let anything ruin that for me.”
Reading the comments she received after her statement, her hand instinctively went to her chest, showcasing a mix of emotions on her expression. “I’m truly touched by your support, guys.” A smile appeared on her lips as she went back to adding the finishing touches to her eyeshadow. “Though I have to say you’re making me laugh with your reactions to me saying I’m happy. I didn’t think that was possible either, but what do you know? Maybe life doesn’t have a personal vendetta against me after all. Maybe I should’ve just been more patient, but well, I trust that everything happens for a reason. I’m thankful for the state of mind I’m in right now, and that’s all that counts.”
“Where’s Julian? How would I know?” A chuckle left her lips, as she began applying her eyeliner. “I don’t track him. That’s not a healthy…” she stopped, looking straight at the camera with an amused smile, “… friendship.” She continued tracing her eyeliner as if she hadn’t said anything out of common, that made the comments on her phone suddenly increase. She didn’t say anything as she waited for them to calm down, so she could go back to answering questions.
“What’s the last movie I’ve seen?” She stopped for a moment, looking towards the ceiling as she was thinking. A smile appeared on her lips as she remembered. “Funny enough, it was with Julian. We watched “The Nun” at an open air cinema event in London.” Jade read the comments, a disbelieving smile on her lips, then responded to them as she put on mascara. “Bold of you guys to assume I need someone to hold me during horror movies. I’m not afraid of them. Or anything for that matter. I’m pretty much fearless.” Except emotions, but she wouldn’t mention that. She wouldn’t tell them that she did spend that night in Julian’s arms, not because she was afraid, but because she liked being close to him.
Applying red lipstick, she then looked towards her comments. A huff left her lips as her eyes read the question. They were unbelievable. “Am I meeting Julian? Yes, I am,” she said, “I am also meeting Luana and Chasity, that doesn’t change that I’m putting on make up for myself, not for him, or anyone else I’m seeing today.” She sighed, putting her make up bag aside to look straight at the camera. “I think we’ve covered enough the subject that women do not dress or put on make up for men for you to stop insinuating at this point. You can do better.”
“You know, I should have a feminist podcast,” she said, looking through her comments and expecting to see a lot of negativity, yet that wasn’t the case. They were all encouraging and excited which kind of made her feel bad for getting their hopes up. “That was a joke. Sorry, I would, but I literally don’t know how that would fit into my schedule,” she responded, shaking her head softly with an apologetic smile. “Besides, I think I’d get too frustrated with the issues discussed and that’s not an advantage when the purpose is getting educated. You should be taught about feminism from someone who has patience, meanwhile I’m gonna keep ranting about these problems on Instagram and Twitter.” She ended her explanation with a smile, feeling much more calm when explaining herself.
“What’s my favorite shade of lipstick? The one I’m wearing right now, actually.” Inspecting what the label was saying, she then approached the lipstick to the camera. “It’s the Fenty Beauty Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipstick, in the shade of Royal Red, called Madamn.”
She removed the accessory that was holding most of her hair back. “What do I have planned for the future career wise?” She smiled as she began styling strands of her hair into waves. “I’m glad you specified what future you mean, because personal life future, I couldn’t have told you.” Realizing what she just said, she closed her eyes for a second, breathing in. She should be more careful with the way she worded things. “Because I don’t know what the future has reserved for me in that aspect, not because there’s a particular event that would happen in the future.” The last thing she needed was people sending videos of her to Julian asking him if he proposed or asking him when they were getting married. “Anyway, back to the question. I can’t tell too much, but I’m preparing for the European leg for All The Stars World Tour as you know. I’m also writing a lot, and I’ve already filmed the first two music videos for the fourth album. I can’t reveal anything about the release date right now, but you know, I’ll keep you posted.”
Once she finished with the hair, she attached it in a way that it wasn’t standing in her face, but still was cascading down her back. “Last question,” she announced as she looked through the comments until she found a good one. “What was my favorite concert I’ve performed during this tour?” There was no hesitation there, a genuine smile appearing on her lips. “New York City.” There was no doubt why. Julian was at her concert that night, and having him backstage when they hadn’t seen each other in more than a month made her feel so happy. However, she needed to divert the fans’ attention from that. “New York is one of my favorite cities, and the energy there is just incredible.” She wasn’t lying, but there were other cities where she performed that were memorable too — New York stood out because of her significant other being there. She smiled as she thought about how in love she was. It wasn’t getting less surreal with time.
“Thanks for keeping me company as I was getting ready. I’ll keep you updated on my outfit later when I’ll post a photo. Hope the rest of your day will be good. Take care.”

Jennifer's Body was a bummer. I mean wettie-killer.
Like many feminist blog readers and pop-culture junkies, Kelsey and I have been following the hype on Jennifer’s Body , starring Megan Fox as a cheerleader-turned-flesh-eating-demon and Amanda Seyfried as her loyal but mousier (Hollywood mousier) BFF, since we watched the preview way back in July. We finally got a chance to see it this Monday, and while hate is a strong word, there was one too many WTF? moments (“867-5309”?!) for us to get a feminist buzz off this flick (especially after being surprisingly touched by Whip It preview). So like the vlogging pioneers we strive to be (did you know we have a video page?) we sat down moments after the credits rolled to give our impressions, which include a primer on Diablo Cody’s latest vernacular additions (:30), why we were disappointed (1:13), and of course its redeeming qualities (What? Unlike some people–JENNIFER!–we’re not all filled with black bile and bloodlust. 4:19)! Check ‘er out and share your own spoiler-filled thoughts on the movie!
KW: Alright I’m Kelsey and KJ: I’m Kjerstin KW: Kjerstin and I just saw Jennifer’s body. First of all, did you like the movie? KJ: No. I didn’t. I thought it was really bad KW: Thumbs up or down? What would you–? KJ: I would have to do two thumbs down. KW: I would also give it two thumbs down. KJ: It’s not just a feminist thumbs down, it’s like a… movie thumbs down. KW: My feminist thumb and movie going thumb are both down.
**
KW: Let’s talk a little bit about some of the slang we learned. Diablo Cody is queen of slang terms that to0 cool for school teens like to use to each other. KJ: there’s salty. KW: Salty means that a boy is cute. I had never heard it before. To all you salty fellas out there… KJ: “Jello,”… but I say that. KW: “jello” if you’re jealous. You do say that? KJ: “gummer”. KW: “gummer” was like somebody kind of a who’s a hick or a loser KJ: And the best one was “wettie”. KW: Yeah. If you have a vagina and you get turned on by something you have a total wettie.
**
KW: I’ll start by saying one of the reasons I’m disappointed is that I had high hopes for the movie.
KJ: I didn’t have high hopes but it got talked up a lot about being like, a revamped horror flick…like, she eats boys! Like that’s feminist, right? Like… killing boys.
KW: Right. “She’s feminist.” And there were these interviews with Diablo Cody, who wrote the script for the movie– KJ: Right and Diablo Cody’s like this edgy …. KW: Right and she’s like “ohh– KJ: …that really edgy film about the pregnant girl? I don’t’ know if you guys saw that… KW: I don’t know I guess I will say it was nice to see a female friendship at the forefront of the plot of the movie but– KJ: that’s true, seeing any female-centered… both the villain and protagonist were… KW: …were girls. So it passed the Bechdel test. At one point, by the swimming pool, she [Jennifer] has just murdered a really cute high school boyfriend [Chip]. Then Needy says, “Is it just because of your insecurities..”, and that was maybe the only point where I was like, “Oh they’re trying to make a commentary: ….popular girls have insecurities. “ KJ: Like oh, that’s what drives women to like eat guys alive…is our insecurities, maybe? KW: Yeah and they pointed out that she had an eating disorder, she uses laxatives to stay skinny… this is the Megan Fox character, Jennifer. KJ: I like how the spoilers is that “she uses laxatives to lose weight,” like that’s the spoiler. KW: Right. Spoiler. She gets an eating disorder!
**
KW: Right and I don’t know, I think I wanted to like her character more, if she was cooler and funnier, instead she was— KJ: Right. cause you could get behind the demon thing if you actually liked her. KW: Yeah..i guess?
KJ: Maybe the other point was that Jennifer was insecure and she was feasting on the attention of boys and using her sexuality and she got power from that? Maybe this is where the inspiration from the movie came from? KW: Right, a biting commentary. KJ: But yeah that didn’t come out at all, you had to kind of search for that meaning and once you found it it was like, oh, that’s not really…. KW: And we were searching pretty hard. Probably not everyone was searching this hard.
**
KW: Also there was there was this horrific, like triggering kind of gang rape scene . KJ: YEAH! KW: where she gets tied up by this indie rock band and knifed to death [air quotes], I mean that’s when she gets overcome by the demon. KJ: She’s also kidnapped sort of? [more air quotes] by this evil indie band, which I also found really creepy because if you were in Needy’s position and you saw your best friend come out of a bar, she’s really out of it, and the band is like come with us, get in the van, and you know, to her you’re not watching a Diablo Cody horror movie, it was kind of scary! It was like they were blending this kind of real scary situation but it was hard for me to play that off like ‘ha ha see you later” KW: “This is kind of campy! This is sort of funny!” KJ: It wasn’t campy it was weird. And so was the scene where they sacrifice her. KW: It was already kind of weird to be so irreverent about teen pregnancy, and then to be irreverent about teen rape and murder was just like, “Even within this context….”
**
KJ: I thought it was interesting in the end how Chip is the one whose life is in danger and his girlfriend is the one who has to come to the rescue and you don’t’ see that every day. KW: Yeah I liked that too. She was wearing a really tacky prom dress too. I actually really like the heterosexual high school couple’s relationship. I felt like, even when they kind of gave us too much of a window into their awkward sex it seemed really realistic. KJ: Diablo Cody learned a lesson from Juno and put in a condom this time , which was awesome. KW: Amy Sedaris played the mom, who I’m a fan of, so that was cool to see. Although… she wasn’t really in it. None of the characters really had parents…that were really in the movie. And of course Amanda Seyfried, the best friend Needy, gets basically… I mean she does murder Jennifer at the end of the movie and she gets found having murdered her when what she really did was save the whole town from the demon and so she has to go to a correctional facility… KJ: which was weird, I thought that was a whole other can of worms. KW: Yeah I mean I guess I really didn’t like that decision to inject some realism at the end. Like couldn’t she just have gotten away with it? KJ: Yeah isn’t that what we’re doing here? KW: Right couldn’t she have ended up the empowered female character? She does break out of prison but you get the impression that she’s going right back.
**
KW: Bitch magazine was supposed to be in the movie..! We signed a waiver for set dressing, but we didn’t see it the whole time KJ: No . I thought I did but I could have been wrong. KW: It didn’t show up. I think that could have helped. Diablo Cody, if you’re watching….
KW: So I guess I would say overall, probably we don’t recommend it, if you haven’t seen it in the theater yet. Save your money.

Works Of Henry James To Read Before Watching Haunting Of Bly Manor
The horror film director, Mike Flanagan, is all set with his classic horror fiction. The filmmaker made the fantastic series for Netflix in 2018 titled, The Haunting of Hill House with his producing partner Trevor Macy. It is an American horror drama television series directed and created by Mike Flanagan with producing partner Paramount Television and Amblin Television for Netflix. The plot is loosely based on the novel of the same name written by Shirley Jackson. The story alternates between two timelines; it follows the five siblings who experience paranormal activities in the Hill House. The show casts Elizabeth Reaser, Michiel Huisman, Kate Siegel, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, and Victoria Pedretti as the adult siblings and Henry Thomas and Carla Gugino played the character of Hugh and Olivia Crain. The story revolves around the family of Olivia and Hugh Crain, along with their children Shirley, Steven, Luke, Theodora, and Nell. The family moved into the house to renovate the mansion to sell it and then build their own home. But due to some unexpected delays in the repairing work, the family had to stay a little longer, and they started to experience increasing paranormal activities.
Now, Flanagan is preparing the next season of the show titled, The Haunting of Bly Manor, but the plot of the season is an entirely different plot. It is based on the novel named The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. Some of the cast and the creative team of the Hill House will be back from Bly Manor. The team is working on the production from 30 September 2019 and planned to premiere on Netflix on 9 October 2020.
The title of the show suggests the story is the classic ghost story based on James’ novel. But Flanagan said in most of his interviews that Bly Manor is just the remix of the book and it takes the central concept from Turn of the Screw. The plot follows a young governess who is hired by a man to look after his nephew and niece at his family country house. After arriving at Bly estate, she starts to experience the ghostly feeling which haunts the premises.
Although it is yet a question of how the storyline of the novel is used in the series, Bly Manor will have a bit of Henry James primer and Flanagan style of imagination in it. So before watching The Haunting of Bly Manor, the fans should check out other James tales to get some idea of the upcoming show.
The Turn of the Screw
The story of the novel revolves around an unnamed narrator along with characters who listen to Douglas while reading a manuscript written by a governess who is dead now. The manuscript tells that the story is about the young governess, hired by a man to look after his nephew and niece after the death of their parents. He lives in London and has a country house, Bly. The boy named Mile and his young sister named Flora, they lived in a summer country house in Essex.
One day Miles returns from the school after a letter arrives from the headmaster that he has been expelled. But the governess is hesitant to ask him the reason, and she is afraid that there is some horrible secret behind the expulsion.
James set up the story by someone who happened to have written an account of it. The Turn of the Screw is a multilayered story with little veils of obfuscation which leads to many questions among readers. Is governess the centre of the story or the Bly Manor’s leading lady, Dani, who is tormented by the spirits of the servants? Or is it only in her head? Although the story answers all the questions effectively and leaves the readers in a ghostly aura.
The Great Good Place
The plot of the novel follows a man after noticing the amount of work that seems to be piling around his house and wishes himself away to retreat where he could relax and take stock of his life with the help of a mysterious guest. And while reading, many questions arise in readers mind including, is this imagined, real, or some fantasy world conjured by an unseen, unknown force? Although the readers never got their answers in the book, the ghostly experiences and overwhelming modern life are palpable.
The Romance of Certain Old Clothes
In the interview, Mike Flanagan shared that he included some of the parts of the storyline from this novel of James to develop the lot of Bly Manor and the promotional photo reveals that he used the family name of “Lloyd” on gravestone which is most likely he took from this tale.
The plot of the novel follows two sisters who fall in love with the same man. So naturally, the guy has to choose among them. And in the process, he sends the sisters on different paths. The title of the book suggests the collection of expensive, elegant clothing of one sister and the overpowering desire of another sister to possess it for herself. So if you are speculating will the Bly Manor have a similar ghostly experience at the end of the story. Well, perhaps that is what is waiting in the show.
The above are a few novels written by James, which are adapted by Flanagan to create a series. The fans can roughly get some idea about the storyline and style of writing. What else the series will serve, for that fans have to wait till October release. I hope it was a fun article for you.

Movie Review | Purana Mandir & Bandh Darwaza
If your idea of Bollywood is mostly lavish musical romances, these movies will be a real shock to you. Even today, horror movies don’t get much respect in the industry, and it definitely wasn’t the case in the ‘80s (which from my experience is the decade of Bollywood nobody wants to talk about, coming after the classics of the ‘70s and before the megahits of the ‘90s, featuring soundtracks that gave disco a home for a decade after it had gone out of vogue in America). Inspired by the popularity of American horror movies, the Ramsay brothers made Purana Mandir, which became a big hit and kicked off a trend of Bollywood horror that lasted nearly a decade or so. (Grady Hendrix wrote a pretty good primer on the Ramsays for Film Comment that first put these movies on my radar.) The American influence is pretty obvious, with a plot that has a bunch of horny 20-somethings going on a trip and then start getting killed. Bandh Darwaza, made a few years later, is a higher-budgeted and more polished production, but both movies share a lot of the same qualities. While tame by western standards, they’re much bloodier and racier than the average Bollywood movie (Purana Mandir introduces its heroine with a closeup of her breasts, and there’s a decent amount of bawdy humour in both). They both incorporate the requisite musical numbers, but reasonably smoothly, and Bandh Darwaza even stages some of them in ways that blend nicely with horror elements. They also have some fairly painful comedy sequences to pad the runtime. I watched Bandh Darwaza first, which features Johnny Lever playing an annoying sleaze with a Hitler mustache who’s introduced trying to practically dryhump one of the female leads while she’s exercising along to a workout video (basically the same character he plays in every movie, but sleazier). But as irritating as Lever’s character is, he’s at least a competent performer and his character goes away after the first act. (While I’ve rarely found him particularly funny, the consistency of his performances makes his abrasive style fairly tolerable in most of his movies.) He’s Laurence fucking Olivier compared to Jagdeep, who shouts and mugs his way through an interminable Sholay parody subplot that makes Purana Mandir feel at least an hour longer than it is. But if you have the patience to endure these parts, the horror elements are genuinely effective. Both movies are essentially Hammer horrors done with lower budgets and within the confines of Bollywood musicals, and manage to channel that same grandiose sense of horror in their own way. They have two aces up their sleeve. One, both movies are set in real ruins that greatly enhance their atmosphere. (As a fan of corridor scenes, I can appreciate how these movies use these locations to give character to the horror.) These movies also understand the importance of the monster, and they have pretty good ones, both played menacingly by Anirudh Agarwal, who at 6′ 7″ towers over the rest of the cast. His character in Bandh Darwaza is a vampire not unlike Christopher Lee’s Dracula, and the movie’s best moment is potent and sexually charged in way that does justice to the Hammer inspiration.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me & Twin Peaks Series Reboot. I went back to re-watch the movie Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me to get a handle on all the details floating in the reboot of the new Twin Peaks series. I don't get all the crap that had been written about the movie Fire Walk With Me, mostly at the time of it's release, critics -- and lots of Lynch fans too -- tore it apart and just outright hated it. For me, the movie was forward thinking and as innovative and brilliant as anything Lynch has ever come up with. For one thing, he doesn't just make a follow-up to the TV series, but rather a "prequel" which was a concept not in wide general use yet in 1992. Second, he didn't simply rehash the same tropes as in the series, but rather heightened them, augmented them, twisted them. The film is several genres at once: We have a sort of dark, semi-comic parody of a soap opera going on on one level -- the direction of actors and the treatment of their respective roles was already a given in this sense in the series. It is a send-up of the detective/murder mystery genre with absurd twists and turns. It is a supernatural horror story -- with a surrealistic, evil, murderous spook and spiritual possession (BOB!), etc. It is a disturbing thriller dealing with incest, drug abuse and mental illness that eventually reveal themselves and smack you in the face. All of these elements are at play in the movie and it all gels and works in tandem with the tv series from '90-'91. They are handled deftly and with typical mastery of detail and form which Lynch is known for. I think the movie was disliked by some partly because of the missing characters and the comedic bits from the tv series which did a couple of different things: One, it injected some comic relief into the story; it was entertaining to see all of these odd characters and made the whole package less heavy and oppressive. It provided for lots of separate subplots for viewers to engage in, which was also quite entertaining. It also supported the notion of parallel worlds existing simultaneously and revealing a sort of duality of existence and what can lay just below the banal exterior of everyday life. For all his artiness, Lynch understands one of the basic tenets of movies and movie making: do whatever, be as outrageous, arty and experimental as you want as long as it's entertaining! And he does! In the film however, after the first third or so of various set ups and new characters, we are back to a basic, streamlined story all about Laura Palmer. For whatever reason, this did not sit well with most critics, viewers, or fans for that matter. On the other hand, Fire Walk With Me is a little over 2 hours long and is a stand alone film, but it is an extension of the series. All those oddball characters, as entertaining as they were, would not serve the function of the film to get its point across, not to mention that it would need hours to flesh out so many characters -- a pointless endeavor and not useful to the film: The central point/theme being the story of Laura Palmer and what happens to her. Also, because it was made for theaters, the central theme of the movie -- which is a dark and disturbing one -- would have been trivialized by the surreal snarky/goofy bits that people liked in the series. So, too dark for some, not enough goofy bits for others... Too bad. In the end, Fire Walk with Me turns out to be a fantastic movie and in my view, a necessary primer to the new series reboot, and it holds up really well 25 years later. Much has already been hurled at the new series too. So far, i think it's great! Lynch takes his time with it's development and pacing and many have noticed and remarked that it is "slow". I'm not one of those. Much of the approach to character and scene development is a retooling from the original series, only now, Lynch is more or less free to do it however he sees fit -- and this means a more laid back pace and a willingness to immerse the viewer in some of the most unbridled, surreal imagery Lynch has ever cooked up. As far ahead of it's time as Eraserhead and the original series were in their respective times, Twin Peaks, Season 3 appears to once again break new ground. There are still a bunch of episodes to go to get the whole picture, but given the first 5, I am more than impressed with its direction. Whether it will live up to the original series and movie, fail, or -- go much further than either, we will have to wait and see.

Metal Gear Primer: The Fandom Pain (6811)
Oh boy here goes.
I am not super into the MG/MGS fandom, I only lurk, but this is a down and dirty primer for a friend that introduces the series and all of the characters (...and the ships). If this is super inaccurate, I am sorry. There are probably plenty of ships that I won’t have here. If someone notifies me, I’ll try to fix it if I can. There’s just so much ._.
Beware! Spoilers abound and will be unmarked. If for some reason you care about the plot of these games and want to discover them for yourself by playing the game, this is not for you. (That said, the gaming experience is obviously quite separate from any paragraph long description I could generate and would be worth looking into, or at least watching Let’s Plays of)
Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6miaTf1gF4g
It starts with a man by the name of Kojima. Hideo Kojima always wanted to be a film director, but went into video games instead. After a shaky start in the video game industry under Konami, he was told to take over the assignment of Metal Gear from a senior associate. He turned a fairly straightforward Contra-esque game into the first stealth action game, emphasizing evasion and avoidance over direct combat. This was his first notable hit and he would continue to innovate and expand his repertoire with Snatchers and Policenauts, but at the end of the day, he always went back to Metal Gear, first willingly, but then less and less every time until MGSV. After this last sequel, Kojima split with Konami to form his own independent studio, and we await his first game as an independent producer. So it is at least somewhat important to note that the story of Metal Gear is also in many ways the story of Kojima, and each reflects his artistic journey to that point.
Metal Gear (1987) 1995. Solid Snake infiltrates a nation-state called Outer Heaven that was established in South Africa by a mysterious legendary mercenary. Snake’s unit, FOXHOUND, had previously sent one of its top agents, Gray Fox, to infiltrate Outer Heaven, but it lost contact with Gray Fox. Therefore, FOXHOUND commander Big Boss sends Snake, a solid rookie, into the fray to both investigate Outer Heaven and rescue Gray Fox in a mission called Intrude N313. With the help of Big Boss over the radio and some local resistance members, Snake penetrates successfully.
After finding and rescuing Gray Fox, Solid Snake learns of “Metal Gear,” a bipedal walking tank with nuclear capabilities. With Metal Gear, Outer Heaven hopes to become not just a recognized state but also a new superpower. Snake rescues the scientist, Dr. Madnar, who was forced to work on Metal Gear and is able to make quick work of the bipedal tank before it is completed, but not before running into traps that seemed specifically set for him. Moreover, Big Boss starts to become erratic, sending bad advice and even breaking the fourth wall to dissuade the player from continuing the game. Lo and behold, that mysterious legendary mercenary is Big Boss, who was playing both sides this entire time. Snake takes Big Boss out and gets out of Outer Heaven before it implodes.
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (1990) 1999. Snake is brought out of retirement to infiltrate Zanzibarland in Central Asia. New FOXHOUND commander Roy Campbell and “Hell” Master Miller send Snake in to rescue a Dr. Marv, a scientist who discovered/created a species of algae that can mass produce petroleum-grade hydrocarbons and thus relieve the on-going energy crisis. Dr. Marv was kidnapped by Zanzibarland soldiers to take the world hostage through energy control and captured Soviet nuclear weapons. In the midst of infiltrating, Snake finds out Dr. Madnar was also captured and forced to make another Metal Gear, Metal Gear D. When rescued, Dr. Madnar reveals that Gray Fox, who had gone missing since Intrude N313, is piloting Metal Gear D. Dr. Madnar also reveals that Zanzibarland is led by none other than Big Boss, back from the grave.
Later in the game, Dr. Madnar has one final reveal: he’s gone somewhat vindictively loony after the scientific community rejected him and his little bipedal tank project, so he wasn’t so much captured as invited back under Big Boss’s wing. After taking care of him, Solid Snake takes out Gray Fox in Metal Gear D and takes out Big Boss by take an impromptu flamethrower to his eyepatched butt. Big Boss dies.
Metal Gear 2 is known as the game that no one played in which the story actually came together with larger ideas and themes such as nuclear proliferation and the horrors of the war engine.
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (1998) 2005. FOXHOUND, Solid Snake’s former unit, has agents go rogue under the name “Sons of Big Boss” and take over a nuclear weapon disposal facility on Shadow Moses Island off the coast of Alaska. They want Big Boss’s remains and a billion dollars or they use Metal Gear REX against the United States. Colonel Roy Campbell and Master Miller pull Snake out of retirement for this one last-last mission. Again. Snake is to infiltrate the target and neutralize the threat as he sees fit. He meets up with FOXHOUND agents along the way, and they have a strange habit of dying around him. Of note are Sniper Wolf, Revolver Ocelot (who does not die but has his arm sliced off) and Psycho Mantis (who is basically a fourth wall breaking meme on his own). As for allies, Snake meets up with Meryl Silverburgh, another infiltrator; Hal “Otacon” Emmerich, the new scientist forced to make Metal Gears; and a mysterious Cyborg Ninja, who slices off Revolver Ocelot’s hand.
The leader of the Sons of Big Boss, Liquid Snake, reveals to Solid Snake that they’re actually brothers, both clones of Big Boss, thus raising this sequel’s main question “To make the perfect soldier, are GENES the deciding factor?” as the two were a part of a secret cloning project in the 70s known as Les Enfants Terribles which was an effort to replicate the perfect soldier that was Big Boss. Liquid also reveals that he was impersonating (the recently deceased) Master Miller over the radio to trick Snake into doing his bidding, activating Metal Gear REX. They have a fight. The Cyborg Ninja reveals himself to be Gray Fox back again. Gray Fox sacrifices himself. Liquid loses. REX is basically destroyed. Snake is told he has been injected with a virus called FOXDIE that targets and kills FOXHOUND members, but is “programmed” to kill Snake “sometime in the future.” Snake rides off into the sunset with either Meryl or Otacon. The idea that GENES control one’s fate is thus at least half refuted as Snake decides to take his own path and not be the perfect soldier They want. Revolver Ocelot, de-armed, appears after credits to deliver the plans to Metal Gear to a shadowy figure, possibly the US President.
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001) 2007. Solid Snake and Otacon now run a NGO called Philanthropy that wants to put a stop to all of this Metal Gear nonsense. Snake infiltrates a tanker to investigate Metal Gear RAY. At the same time, mercenaries attack the ship for RAY. They are led by Colonel Gurlukovich who brought his daughter, Olga, and Revolver Ocelot along to steal the RAY. Revolver Ocelot has two arms again, one grafted from Liquid’s body. Upon interaction with Snake, Ocelot seems to have some kind of psychic weirdness as Liquid’s personality somehow reveals itself from the arm. Ocelot under Liquid’s control steals RAY for himself, blasting a hole in the ship, abandoning Colonel Gurlukovich, Olga, and Snake to their respective dooms in a sinking tanker.
2009. Codename “Snake” from the newly reformed FOXHOUND infiltrates Big Shell, an offshore facility placed over the tanker spill. Big Shell has been taken over by a group that calls itself “Sons of Liberty” and is led by a man claiming to be Solid Snake. “Snake” quickly renames himself Raiden and meets up with Iroquois Pliskin, a man who claims to be a Navy SEAL. There’s a lot of hostages and stuff. What you need to know is that the entirety of the Big Shell mission is supposed to be reminiscent of the previous games, drawing the question “To make the perfect soldier, are MEMES the deciding factor?” playing on the theory that the circumstances and ideas around a figure make them who they are. The mission goes quite off the rails, Iroquois is revealed to be Solid Snake, trying to clear his name. The man calling himself “Solid Snake” is actually Solidus Snake, a “perfect” clone of Big Boss, who was elected President. He was also a warlord in the Liberian Civil War who conveniently(?) raised Raiden as a child soldier. There’s even a Cyborg Ninja, who is Olga, who only agreed to be the Cyborg Ninja because they’ve taken her child.
This entire scenario was devised by an AI called GW (or George Washington), who has been guiding Raiden along as the Colonel (but not Campbell) trying to make another perfect soldier by recreating scenarios. There’s a fight on a huge submersible fortress thing called Arsenal Gear that houses GW. In order to break free, Raiden uploads a virus into Arsenal Gear and causes the Colonel to freak out in fourth wall breaking ways. Raiden and Snake crash the fortress into Manhattan where Raiden fights Solidus. At this point, Raiden has more or less completely left the path of déjà vu shadowing Snake, and he’s able to katana Solidus to death. Thus, the idea that MEMES controls one’s fate is somewhat refuted as they fail to make Raiden into the perfect soldier They wanted. “They” is also finally revealed to be a shadowy organization called The Patriots, who all take names (like GW) after Founding Fathers. Ocelot seems to be working directly for The Patriots, psychic weirdness besides.
Going back to Kojima, many people argue this video game as an introspective look into what people are looking for in a video game sequel. More of the same? Would they be more upset about having the same exact things happen again, or being given something completely new? Kojima, being the sort to continue to push the envelope, did not settle for more of the same as Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake kinda ended up being.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004) 1964. After the end of World War II, the world was split into two... East and West. This is Kojima’s love song to Cold War spy movies, and the key word this time is SCENE. A CIA Agent, code name “Naked Snake” is sent into the jungles in the USSR to rescue a defecting Soviet scientist named Sokolov in what is called the “Virtuous Mission.” Snake infiltrates with the help of Major Zero, Para-medic, and his mentor in the FOX unit, The Boss. He retrieves Sokolov and finds out more about the Shagohod, which is a nuclear equipped tank (sounds familiar, I know). En route to exfiltration, Snake gets sucker-punched by The Boss, who promptly defects to the Soviet Union into the hands of Colonel Volgin, a madman with electrical powers, taking Sokolov and the Shagohod with her. This is a devastating blow to Snake and he almost gets blown up for his troubles as Volgin detonates a nuke. The Boss is blamed for the detonation.
A week later, Naked Snake is sent back into the jungles to kill his mentor as a part of a deal between America and the Soviet Union called Operation Snake Eater. Since The Boss has clearly gone rogue and is the reason for this international incident, killing her, destroying the Shagohod, and putting down Colonel Volgin’s uprising is the best way to make amends. Snake is assisted by his crew (Zero, et. al) over the radio, and an American defector named EVA, who is clearly supposed to be the Bond girl. Snake runs into the Cobra Unit, the Boss’s old unit of supernaturally afflicted emotion based superhuman soldiers, who are calling themselves now “Sons of The Boss.” He kills all of them. He also runs into the Ocelot Unit, which is lead by none other than a young Ocelot (minus Revolver). Ocelot is defeated several times and Snake even introduces the young man to revolvers. Next, Snake gets captured by Volgin, fails to stop Sokolov from getting brutally killed, and gets his eye shot out by Ocelot in quick order. He then fights Volgin and the Shagohod and somehow wins. In the dust, he finds out about the Philosophers, a shadowy organization made up of victors of WWII that hid a ridiculous amount of cash, known as the Philosopher’s Legacy, that Volgin was trying to take for himself. Turns out the Americans were trying to secure it, which is part of why Snake was sent out there. Snake then fights and kills The Boss in probably the most emotionally charged battle in all of MGS. He gets out, but not before being betrayed by EVA who turns out to be a Chinese spy and who steals the location of the Philosopher’s Legacy. EVA also reveals to Snake that The Boss didn’t really defect. Her mission was to pretend to defect get close to Volgin to steal the Philosopher’s Legacy from him, but after the nuclear strike, The Boss was offered as a sacrificial lamb.
Back in the States, Naked Snake is given the title “Big Boss” for surpassing the Boss, is hailed basically the perfect soldier. As Zero builds Snake’s praises as a propaganda piece for his new organization called Cipher, Snake becomes increasingly disillusioned by everything around him, eventually leaving the States completely. After end credits, Ocelot pops up again, tells the KGB that they could use Snake’s work in the jungles as blackmail against the United States, and then tells the CIA that the information that EVA stole from Snake was fake. He had the actual information and would be able to give it over to America so that the United States and the Soviet Union would each have half the Philosopher’s Legacy. Basically Ocelot is playing EVERYONE. He’s also The Boss’s son.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2008) It would be hard to argue that MGS4 isn’t the culmination of this entire clusterfuck of a series. I’ve tried my best to omit anything in the previous details that isn’t relevant to understanding this game or the ships discussed afterwards.
2014. Solid Snake has prematurely aged a ridiculous amount and looks kinda like Solidus Snake, only less buff. They literally call him Old Snake. This also means he looks like Big Boss if Big Boss hadn’t kicked the bucket. Snake is still working with Otacon and they’re raising Olga’s daughter, Sunny, together. Campbell basically hauls Snake out of retirement one last bloody time to end the story, basically. All guns are now ID-locked, meaning only people who are authorized to shoot them can shoot them, meaning there’s a ridiculous amount of control in War now. And this is possible because of nanomachines. Ocelot, now going by Liquid Ocelot, is raising an army of nanomachine’d super soldiers for some nefarious reason and Snake needs to take out Ocelot once and for all now he’s been built up to be this magnificent bastard mix between Liquid and Ocelot in the last three games.
At first, Liquid Ocelot’s after Big Boss’s remains again because Big Boss’s biometrics unlock something about the Patriots’ AI or whatever, giving control of everything to potentially him. Raiden shows up, this time he’s the Cyborg Ninja, and he and Meryl Silverburg do their part covering Snake’s old man butt. EVA reveals herself as the leader of a resistance movement against Liquid, Big Mama. Turns out she is the surrogate mother that gave birth to both Liquid Snake and Solid Snake under the direction of Para-medic, who ran the Les Enfants Terribles project. Ocelot goes after the lot of them to reveal he no longer wants Big Boss’s remains. He actually blows them up. Instead, he’s just going to destroy the Patriots’ AI system and replace it with his own, so he’s in control. To do this, he needs a nuke, but the only place without an ID-locked nuke is Shadow Moses Island. There’s a gratuitous battle of the abandoned Metal Gear REX piloted by Snake defeats Metal Gear RAY piloted by Ocelot. That’s okay for Ocelot, he’s got a new and improved Arsenal Gear, now called Outer Haven. Yes, like Outer Heaven. It has the nuke that Ocelot needs to destroy the Patriots’ AI. They stop him by putting a virus into Outer Haven that destroys Ocelot’s system, the Patriots’ system, and basically leaves civilization teetering on the brink as the system controlling it is destroyed. Snake fisticuffs with Ocelot in this amazing boss battle that echos all of the final boss battles throughout the series, and Ocelot finally dies.
This would be happily ever after, but Solid Snake’s FOXDIE is about to go off. He decides to go out on his own terms, but is stopped by Big Boss! Yes, Snake’s “father” Naked Snake survived the flamethrower to the face all the way back in MG2. Surprise. He stops Snake from killing himself just in time. Big Boss explains how the Patriots were formed with the idea that they’d follow the Boss’s final wish, to see a unified world. Zero took the wish to mean that he needed to control the world to unify it, thus Cipher, the Patriots, and everything that happened since on the shadowy government side. Big Boss took the wish to mean that he should unify the world’s soldiers, giving them a refuge and a consistent means of living. Thus the war. But Big Boss now sees that neither of them were right. With that said, Big Boss reveals lastly that the FOXDIE has mutated to something that won’t kill Snake but will kill him. So “Father” and “Son” have a touching moment. Big Boss finally finally finally freaking dies. And Snake is finally finally finally able to live out the rest of his shortened lifespan actually on his own terms.
You’d think that was where the story ended. And it probably should have! If Kojima had his way. No instead we got
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (2010) 1974. Naked “Don’t call him Big Boss he hates that” Snake has established a mercenary group called Militaires Sans Frontières with help from Kazuhira “Master” Miller. They had met in the jungles of Colombia and Snake owned Miller’s entire mercenary group. Snake “convinced” Miller to join him. Thus, MSF. They’re approached by a man by the name of Ramon Galvez Mena, who says that Costa Rica has been taken over by an occupying force and, having no military of its own, needed someone to help liberate it. Snake doesn’t buy it and immediately identifies Mena as KGB, but Paz, Mena’s student, has a recording of The Boss, which convinces him to go investigate it. As payment, they receive an off-shore facility that Miller dubs “Motherbase.” Anyway, there’s another nuclear tank. This time it has feet instead of drill wheel things, it’s fail-deadly, meaning it will launch if it’s armed and gets destroyed, and it’s known as “Peace Walker.” A guy named Hot Coldman wants to use it to demonstrate the ultimate deterrence. To defeat Peace Walker, Snake finds and “recruits” wheelchair bound walking technology enthusiast Huey Emmerich and Dr. Strangelove, an AI specialist who was in love with The Boss and is basically there to be a lesbian for much of the story. She starts off hating Snake because he killed The Boss and took her title, making Strangelove so obsessed with her possibly former lover that she makes the AI that drives Peace Walker a copy of The Boss’s personality. Yes it’s very much hard science. The idea is, as Peace Walker is run by an AI, it doesn’t need someone else to confirm the launch of the nukes it has on board.
Mena reveals himself as Zadornov of the KGB and attempts to steal Peace Walker. Hot Coldman activates a data uplink to NORAD to convince American officials that the Soviets had launched against them and that they had to retaliate, thus giving the AI an opportunity to respond without outside input. Instead of preparing to launch the nukes, Peace Walker, under the control of The Boss’s personality, walks into a lake, drowning itself and rendering its launch and the data uplink broken and dead, preventing all out nuclear retaliation. Snake takes this to mean that The Boss always meant to abandon her principles as a solider for soldiers and abandon him as well. He’s upset enough that he decides he will take the matter into his own hands and provide that place for soldiers himself, even if the Boss doesn’t want it. He won’t abandon the battlefield or those who serve on it like his mentor did postmortem.
While this was happening, Huey was doing his bit and had actually made a bipedal tank. Better than Peace Walker’s quadrupedal design. It’s called Metal Gear ZEKE and they armed it with the nuke retrieved from Peace Walker, but it gets taken by Paz, who is also not who she seems like Mena, but instead of the KGB, she’s a spy for Cipher, aka Major Zero. She gets tossed into the sea. With this final insult from a former friend, Snake decides to take up the Big Boss title and take action as the legendary soldier by declaring Motherbase an “Outer Heaven.”
You would think that tie in with MG1 would be the end of it. You’d be wrong.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (2015) 1975. Big Boss and Militaires Sans Frontières catches wind that Paz is still alive. In order to not screw up an UN nuclear inspection, they sink Metal Gear ZEKE again and the nuke, and they need to recover Paz who knows about their nuclear capabilities. As Snake is offbase retrieving Paz, MSF is attacked by this elite force, XOF, that no one saw coming. Motherbase starts to sink. Big Boss picks up Kazuhira Miller via helicopter as they make a retreat into the unknown. They realize Paz has a bomb in her. The on-board Medic cut her open to pull a friggin bomb from her guts. When Paz, in pain but made full conscious, realizes they pulled the bomb out of her guts, she indicates that there’s a second bomb. But before they can properly deal with it, she launches herself out of the helicopter in an attempt to save everyone else. She explodes mid-air and the helicopter crashes.
1984. Big Boss wakes up from a nine year coma. He finds out his memory’s been fucked with because there’s metal shrapnel in his head and face that may or may not cause hallucinations as well. He’s also lost his arm. Things kinda suck for Big Boss right now. He’s completely emaciated and weak as hell. Vulnerable. Even so, the word gets out that “V has come to.” A few weeks after returning to consciousness, the hospital that Big Boss is in gets attacked by XOF again. He’s saved by a man with bandages wrapped around his face who might be a hallucination and calls himself “Ishmael.” There’s an escape sequence that involves avoiding XOF soldiers, staring at Ishmael’s ass crack, and more almost hallucinations: A Man on Fire, and a tiny floating boy with immense psychic powers. Big Boss gets out with Ishmael, but the ambulance they’re in crashes. When Big Boss comes to again, Ishmael is gone. Outside, there is a man in cowboy gear on a horse. Ocelot. Revolver Ocelot. They run away together and get on a boat to a new Motherbase in the Seychelles. This is perfect because it means they’re in range of Afghanistan, where Kazuhira Miller’s been captured.
Big Boss, now calling himself Punished “Venom” Snake, goes in, rescues his XO, and gets attacked by these zombie-esque dudes called the Skulls Parasite Unit. They’re parasite-based super soldiers (not genetically enhanced or nanomachine enhanced) with whom Venom has to wrangle with several times in the game. They’re terrifying. Having rescued Miller, minus an arm and leg, the group of them swear revenge against the people who destroyed Motherbase and MSF, calling their new group Diamond Dogs. But to do that, they need men and they need cash. So Venom starts working to generate capital for Motherbase and kidnap recruits by fulton balloon. Primarily this involves sticking his nose into the Soviet-Afghan War and the Angolan Civil War. At basically every step, Ocelot says one thing and Miller does his best to contradict what Ocelot says as a bad idea. This includes fultoning home a wolf-dog puppy. Ocelot says yes and Miller says no (The doggy stays and is called D-Dog and he is a GOOD BOY). Along the way, the Man on Fire returns to fuck shit up and that boy with the psychic powers, Tretij Rebenok, pops in to make things spooky. The main antagonist is revealed to be a man by the moniker Skullface, who is the head of XOF, a branch of Cipher that Major Zero originally commissioned to clean up after FOX, and “took care of” the minor details behind the Virtuous Mission and Operation Snake Eater. Skullface, tired of being used by countless masters, having lost his face, his home, his mother tongue, his very identity, wrested control of Cipher from Zero and is now using the research Cipher has been doing for his own malicious ends. Namely, parasites that can do basically magic. The superpowered Skulls are only the tip of the iceberg. Venom also captures this parasite-powered super-sniper, Quiet. He decides not to kill Quiet after defeating her, and Quiet returns the favor by saving Venom from a pursuant fighter jet sent by Cipher. Miller wants nothing to do with Quiet, as she’s obviously an assassin sent by Cipher bent on killing Venom and destroying the Diamond Dogs. Things aren’t as bad as Miller makes them out to be, and Ocelot sees Quiet as an asset, since she has had so many opportunities to kill Venom but has not acted on a single one after being defeated and captured.
They get wind of Huey Emmerich’s whereabouts. They go to capture him too and Kazuhira Miller kinda licks his chops over getting revenge on Huey as well as Huey was the one that called the nuclear inspection on MSF “to resolve them of all guilt.” Huey’s been busy working under Skullface, making a new Metal Gear known as Sahelanthropus. Despite being barely finished, it can move on its own accord thanks to the help of the psychic boy, Tretij. Venom Snake captures Huey and gets the hell out of Dodge. At about this time, the Diamond Dogs expand their operations into Africa as well, as it’s known that XOF and Cipher have been working with the various paramilitary factions there. So Venom goes in to snoop again. He picks up Eli, who is this jerk-ass kid who leads a bunch of child soldiers who don’t have adult handlers. Eli is clearly a twelve year old Liquid Snake, and he HATES his “father” Big Boss. Anyway, all of the adults in the child soldiers’ villages have died. Upon further investigation of the reasons why, the second third of the parasite research comes to light: “vocal cord parasites” that kill everyone that speaks the language they’re attuned to. There’s a bunch of neat theory crafting that says that these parasites should be living in symbiosis with us, but they’ve been changed/nuked to be harmful instead. As a vocal chord parasite rampages through the Diamond Dogs, Venom enlists the help of Code Talker, a Navajo parasitologist who was captured and forced to work for Cipher. This brings into light the last third of the parasite research: Metallic Archaea that can convert regular uranium into weapons grade uranium. Skullface wants to spread nuclear weapons to every single faction possible and make it simple for these factions to acquire more nuclear weapons as a part of deterrence. The trick is that he can also deactivate the Metallic Archaea so that only the nuclear weapons that he wants to work will work. He also wants to spread the English strand of the vocal cord parasites to wipe out what he sees as the most virulent language of the modern world. This way, he will be able to take revenge against everyone who has in some way betrayed or slighted him. Venom stops this shit. Tretij betrays Skullface because Eli is a lot more interesting to him. This causes Sahelanthropus to run amok, nearly killing Skullface. After Sahelanthropus gets fucked up, Miller and Venom shoot Skullface, holding the gun together as the recoil is too much for Miller alone to handle. Their revenge is now complete. Or is it?
The rest of the game is spent wrapping up plot points. Huey was discovered to be selling secrets to Cipher, and then causes an outbreak of the language parasite by surreptitiously increasing X-ray exposure on his coworkers, trying to make the parasite mutate. Eli and Tretij steal Sahelanthropus, which was being refurbished by Huey, flying it off Motherbase through the power of powerful psychic energy. Tretij is thus free to become Psycho Mantis and Eli Liquid Snake. Miller decides that’s enough shit that Huey’s been allowed to get up to, and they find Dr. Strangelove’s remains in one of Huey’s projects. Turns out Dr. Strangelove had a child with Huey and that child was used in experiments, which Dr. Strangelove protested, which lead to her getting killed. That child is of course Hal “Otacon” Emmerich. Upon learning about Dr. Strangelove’s fate, Venom and the Diamond Dogs discharge Huey from service and exile him. That fucker. The Man on Fire is revealed to have been Volgin, whose electricity superpowers (possibly powered by parasites) had kept him in a coma. He was also seeking revenge through the aid of Tretij. But after Tretij left, the remaining psychic emanations of Volgin finally die off. Quiet is revealed to have been one of the assassins sent to kill Venom in the Hospital, but she’s done so much for Venom at this point, that’s practically a wash. She was originally going to get revenge on all of them by killing Venom and then releasing the English strand of the vocal cord parasite on Motherbase. She no longer wants to do that, but upon finding out that the parasite can be mutated and activated even if she doesn’t speak a single word of English, she escapes Motherbase and goes AWOL, trying to make sure she doesn’t accidentally kill everyone she’s come to know and love.
The final twist in the game is that Venom Snake isn’t Big Boss. He’s the Medic who was caught in the explosion on the helicopter. Major Zero through Cipher decided that, through the use of hypnosis and reconditioning (because this is what Ocelot is good at), they would make a decoy double for Big Boss, just in case Big Boss needs to die. Instead of being furious with this idea, Big Boss goes with it, and uses Venom to the utmost of his ability, even posing as “Ishmael” to make sure his decoy survives. Ocelot auto-hypnotizes himself to forget he had run this entire hypnosis process on Venom so that he could work under Venom without giving up the ghost, or the phantom, so to speak. When Miller finally finds out after the credits, he’s furious. He completely disavows Big Boss and decides to support “his Phantom and his sons.” Thus setting up the events of Metal Gear. At the same time, Venom learns about this... and accepts this. Kinda. It’s ambiguous if he’s that loyal to Big Boss or if he’s given up being separate from the legend. In this sense, this might be one of the only “clone/remaking of Big Boss” that is truly successful. Partially because it had to be successful. Partially because Big Boss was involved directly.
The Phantom thus dies at Solid Snake’s hands in Metal Gear, patching up a plot hole in the continuity.
Now the part that people actually care about.
Metal Gear Solid is the game that everyone in the fandom basically started out on because Metal Gear was before a lot of people’s times, and Metal Gear 2 wasn’t properly distributed in the US until about Metal Gear Solid 3′s re-release.
There are some hints of Big Boss/Solid Snake, Gray Fox/Solid Snake, and Miller/Solid Snake but these are primarily after the fact when their characters are better established. Nothing that was concurrent with the games (at least nothing I’m aware of).
Expect a lot of hatesex.
Metal Gear Solid:
Snake/Meryl and Snake/Otacon are basically the two most obvious ones and both of these ships revolve around the characters that you primarily interact with and “save” in some way in the game. The two endings either have Snake and Meryl riding off into the sunset on a snowmobile (if Meryl is saved) or Snake and Otacon riding off into the sunset on a snowmobile (if Meryl dies).
Solid Snake/Liquid Snake is somewhat present as it’s the typical protagonist/antagonist ship with a bit of incestuous spice.
Snake/Ocelot kinda exists in the way that Ocelot clearly enjoys torturing Snake and Ocelot is that kind of super flashy/flamboyant character.
Snake/Gray Fox is barely present, the fight that happens includes bits where Gray Fox basically wants Snake to hurt him more. And that gets somewhat expanded on. In extra games that I haven’t listed because they are of dubious canon, it’s revealed that Gray Fox served as a child solider under Big Boss so there’s also that connection.
Snake/Sniper Wolf exists only because there’s a whole “She needs to fall in love with you to kill you” weirdness around her femme fatale character.
Metal Gear Solid 2:
Snake/Otacon is going strong as the entire first section is basically about Otacon commenting on the outrageous things Snake gets up to.
Snake/Ocelot gets expanded upon slightly because of the ridiculousness of Ocelot’s appearance and exit.
Raiden has a girlfriend called Rosemary who is revealed to be an AI, but there’s another actual Rosemary that Raiden has become semi-estranged to but that Rosemary is also involved with the Patriots... It’s complicated.
Snake/Raiden and Iroquois/Raiden is pretty big, as this is gruff older dude with somewhat effeminate younger dude (with amazing hair). Snake also tells Raiden to “choose his own fate” so that’s also a charm point.
Solidus Snake/Raiden is a thing that probably has a lot to do with daddy kink, as Raiden was a child soldier under Solidus Snake, and hateshipping the protagonist and antagonist.
Raiden/Vamp (a mid-boss) kinda exists? It’s mostly because Raiden gets flirted with in a dangerous way and finds out that Vamp is a bisexual.
Snake/Iroquois is largely a part of a running joke in which everyone wants to know what happens to Iroquois Pliskin who clearly not Snake.
Metal Gear Solid 3:
Naked Snake/The Boss is a big one, it’s implied Snake has feelings for his mentor, which makes his final battle with her even more tragic.
Naked Snake/Ocelot is compounded by the way Solid Snake/Ocelot was a thing, but this has been expanded into a full on “Ocelot has a giant crush on this dangerous hunk of a man who trained under Ocelot’s mom.”
Naked Snake/EVA is another ship that happens largely because they have sex and a lot of suggestive comments/flirting before then.
Naked Snake/Volgin is kinda the typical protagonist/antagonist ship with the extra kick of Volgin having tortured Snake. Volgin also is strongly implied to be at least gay if not bi and extremely sadistic. He apparently has a relationship with an officer named Ivan Raidenovitch Raikov (who looks ODDLY LIKE RAIDEN), and part of what EVA was originally tasked to do was get close to Volgin to steal the Philosopher’s Legacy, etc. Volgin/Raikov and Volgin/EVA are not unheard of for that reason.
The Boss/EVA isn’t unheard of, if only because that’s basically the only given/possible woman/woman ship that’s present. The only other female presence is the voice of the Paramedic.
Metal Gear Solid 4:
Snake/Otacon is still going strong and it’s tragic! Snake’s in his twilight years! They have a daughter! Otacon looks like a rugged handsome nerd and not just a nerd! There are a lot of melancholy domestic fics here.
Snake/Ocelot has taken a REALLY WEIRD TURN now that it’s been revealed that Ocelot had a thing for Big Boss. Especially since Ocelot is pretending to be Liquid Snake at the same time. A lot of fuck ups all around. Ocelot also can kiss Snake in their ultimate battle on top Outer Heaven.
Raiden/Vamp returns because they had a rematch in this game. Except Raiden is a cyborg now.
There’s a bit where Snake/Raiden exists in a “Raiden is taking care of the geriatric Snake” sorta deal.
Johnny/Meryl is now a thing. Johnny being a gag soldier that constantly gets diarrhea as toilet humor. He still gets diarrhea in this game. They also get married. Yes, they marry Meryl off to the shittiest character.
Is there a thing for Snake/Big Boss? I really don’t know?? They have one scene where they’re Old together and they kinda have a making up after awkward years of wtf.
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker:
Now, there are “dates” that you can go on as extra fanservice missions. Really there are only two that are really notable: Big Boss/Kaz and Big Boss/Paz.
Big Boss/Kaz is amazing because it goes from Big Boss dominating Kaz to it being a mutually reciprocated relationship but Kaz still kinda feels like he’s under Big Boss’s thumb. There’s also an aspect of Kaz wanting to live up to Big Boss’s expectations.
Big Boss/Paz is kinda squick because she’s allegedly only 18 (really 25 but that’s not revealed until she reveals her true nature as a spy). It’s mostly the schoolgirl crush on the handsome older man sorta deals.
Strangelove/The Boss makes a bit of an appearance because Strangelove retroactively becomes a big part of The Boss’s backstory, even if it’s not explicitly stated that The Boss reciprocated those feelings.
Strangelove/Huey is also a thing if only because Huey obviously has a thing for Strangelove.
There are a few other minor characters due to the game being much more of an ensemble game.
Metal Gear Solid V
Shit gets complicated/interesting here.
Venom/Miller/Ocelot As “Big Boss” has an established relationship with both of them, so there’s an O3P revolving on Venom Snake. Venom/Miller and Ocelot/Venom are both popular as well with kinda opposite dynamics.
Big Boss/Ocelot and Big Boss/Miller are also major as these are both the “true versions” of the “fake” ship that is Venom/et al. That said, aftergame Big Boss/Miller becomes a straight up hateship.
Big Boss/Venom is also kinda a thing because of the way that Big Boss is controlling/behind Venom’s actions and motivations. A lot of it basically becomes emotional abuse based on like super gaslighting.
Somehow I’m pretty sure Big Boss/Ocelot/Miller is rarer than Big Boss/Venom/Ocelot/Miller. Possibly because by the Big Boss reveal, there’s no way Miller sits and takes it unless Venom is there too.
Ocelot/Miller is also somewhat of a hateship because they’re constantly at odds with each other and have the same love interest(s). With how smarmy/smug Ocelot can be and how pissed off Miller is, there’s some good content here based on Miller’s frustration/exasperation.
Venom/Quiet is kinda pushed in the game (they have a vaguely romantic scene together) and they work great together (Venom works well with all of his partners. D-Dog included) and there’s a bit of tragic hateship-ish involved.
Miller/Quiet is also a thing simply because Miller hates Quiet and Quiet is a superpowered cryptid and Miller has half of his limbs but Miller is the XO and Quiet is technically like a PoW, so there’s really weird power dynamics going on.
Liquid Snake/Psycho Mantis becomes a thing retroactively because Eli/Tretij is kind of a thing but it’s uncomfortable shipping two clearly underaged boys.
No one likes Huey, but there might be something where Huey gets his ass kicked by Skullface. And everyone else. Huey’s not a good person.
Venom/Skullface and Big Boss/Skullface is theoretically something that should exist, but is probably more rare than it should be because there are so many better ships out there already. Skullface also looks pretty nasty and not handsomely rugged.
AND THAT IS THAT FOR A PRIMER ON METAL GEAR SOLID I’M SO SORRY IT’S SO LONG BUT THERE’S SO MUCH.

There is also the term extras that are used as supporting characters with few roles in the film. This is different from the main actors who have bigger and more roles.

EXCLUSIVE: Dominic Cooper Dishes on Returning for 'Mamma Mia 2': It's 'a Phone Call I've Been Waiting For'
It's been nine years since the film adaptation of Mamma Mia! rocked audiences around the world, and finally fans will get a chance to see what all their favorite characters have been up to in the recently-confirmed sequel, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!
Among the many stars who've recently signed on to reprise their roles is Dominic Cooper, who says he's very excited to be involved in the long-awaited sequel.
"It’s kind of a phone call I've been waiting for for 10 years, so it was odd to finally get it," Cooper told ET on Tuesday during a press junket for his acclaimed AMC series Preacher. "I mean, I was always surprised that it hadn't come sooner."

The musical rom-com -- which was adapted from a Broadway show of the same name, based on the songs of the beloved Swedish pop group ABBA -- was a smash hit when it hit theaters.
The film earned $144 million domestically and $610 million worldwide based off a $52 million budget. Its massive financial success essentially guaranteed that the film would get a sequel, but most people didn't expect the follow-up to take a decade to come together.
According to Cooper, there's actually a very good reason for the long delay. "They've finally come up with a story that they think is excellent enough to reignite the joy that the original was," the 39-year-old star explained.

"Rather than it being forced and coming two years after the great success of the last one and just pushing out a storyline, that's not what this has been," he continued. "This was finally someone [thinking], 'I've got it! I've got the key to this. I know how this can be good.'"
"And for that reason, it makes me very excited to be a part of it," Cooper added.
The actor will be joining a slew of big-name stars who are returning to the fun franchise, including Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfried and Pierce Brosnan. The sequel is slated to hit theaters on July 20, 2018.
MORE: 'Preacher' Primer: Everything You Need to Know Before AMC's Gritty New Series Premieres
The fun, lighthearted musical romp is a far cry from Cooper's current role in Preacher, a haunting, surreal fantasy/horror/action comic book adaptation that pushes the envelope in terms of dark storytelling and visceral violence, especially on television.
Cooper stars as Jesse Custer, a priest with a criminal background, who becomes the host to a mystical entity that allows him the power to control people with his words. The show has more than its fair share of impressive and elaborate fight sequences, which Cooper handles with the grace and brutality of a dyed-in-the-wool action star.

Given his proficiency when it comes to on-screen hand-to-hand combat -- and his acclaimed starring role as Ian Fleming, the author and creator of James Bond, in the 2014 British miniseries Fleming -- Cooper said he's frequently approached by fans who would love to see him assume the mantle of 007 -- a possibility the star says he's "definitely, always" interested in.
Cooper said that growing up as a boy who was "into cars and gadgets," it’s a role he's always thought about, and that the idea of James Bond has had a big impact in his life.
"I think we all, without really realizing it, are kind of influenced by that idea [of being James Bond]," he shared. "Hopefully not the original Fleming idea of who he was, because by all accounts he wasn't particularly pleasant, but there's always a new way in which to interpret that man, and a new way in which to play him."
BBC America
Cooper suggested that one reason the long-running franchise has been such a success has been producers' willingness to be "brave in the way in which they recreate him."
There have been 24 official James Bond films with six different stars portraying the iconic super spy -- starting with Sean Connery in 1962's Dr. No, followed by George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and, most recently, Daniel Craig.
"I think there are more ways in which he could be played, and I'd only love to do it if I thought that I could bring something else to that role that hasn't yet been achieved," Cooper shared. "It would be very difficult, but an absolute honor to step into the shoes."

The star admitted that Craig would be "a hard one to follow, because he's done such a great job recently." However, it's been reported that Craig, who has played Bond four times in the last 11 years, won't be returning to the franchise, meaning producers could soon be on the hunt for a new man to wear the tux.
And when it comes to fighting and action, Cooper said he's ready for whatever they could come up with. "I'm well up for doing the physical stuff, because I've found that to be really good fun this season [on Preacher]."
Season 2 of Preacher premieres Sunday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on AMC.

Home-video review: Split [MINOR SPOILERS]
[Disclaimer: this review is based on the Italian dub of the film. As such, all opinions on the quality of dialogues and acting are subjective and partial.]
What can you say about M. Night Shyamalan that hasn’t been said before? The controversial writer/director rose to prominence with a couple decent movies at the end of the last century, and then... well, then Hollywood did its job: the guy was hailed as a visionary, it got to his head, and promptly spiralled into an ever-descending pit of mediocrity. Now, in 2017, an entire generation of young moviegoers know him as more of a pop-culture punchline than a filmmaker.
Luckily for him, the one thing Hollywood loves more than an acclaimed whiz kid is a good comeback story. After a couple not-quite-successful attempts at resuscitating his film career Shyamalan finally struck the right chord: Split is a surprisingly strong return to form for the director, delivering a genuinely entertaining psychological thriller experience from beginning to end and offering its viewers a mix of fun, pulp narrative concepts and intense, dark storytelling.
The premise: three teenage girls are abducted by a mysterious man and brought to a secluded bunker-like prison. As time goes by, they come to realise that their lone captor isn’t really alone: due to his multiple personality disorder, he actually functions as a group of separate individuals, each with their own motives and attitudes. Some can be understood, manipulated or reasoned with... others can’t.
It’s a somewhat classic, but massively entertaining story hook, especially as the film doesn’t fall prey to the temptation to play it for laughs. Some of the situations created by such peculiar character dynamics are indeed darkly humorous due to the unhinged absurdity of it all, but here Shyamalan proves wise enough to understand just how terrifying the situation’s unpredictability would be for a real person playing the part of the abductee, and directs accordingly.
The result is a remarkably tense thriller, even in the more expository segments in which more details are provided by necessity in order to understand the antagonist and what drives him. Split keeps the tension high by virtue of good pacing, threatening imagery and, most of all, the strength of its cast: Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) once again proves her talents for portraying “victim” characters who rise to badassery amidst the horror of their situation, and all supporting characters do a fairly credible job of conveying the brutal and disturbing nature of the events unfolding on screen.
The centerpiece of the film is, of course, James McAvoy in the role of the eponymous split-personality villain. McAvoy is a magnetic actor, so it doesn’t come as a surprise that most of the enjoyment to be found in the movie comes from watching him switch between a number of different personas without surrendering to the hamminess that the premise’s inherent absurdity certainly invites.
I promised spoilers, but in truth there are basically two facts I need to give you both as a primer and a caveat of sorts. First: Split features some decidedly dark and mature themes. It does so for believable plot reasons, but some of it does feel rather gratuitous, so I don’t recommend watching it in the company of especially sensitive or easily offended viewers.
Second: as is the case with many of Shyamalan’s films, Split hinges on a number of plot twists, all of them fairly earned. The final and most entertaining one is a literally last-minute affair which unexpectedly ties the film to another entry in the director’s filmography, and if you don’t already know what I’m talking about I’ll leave it at that; what’s relevant to this review is that – again, like in many previous Shyamalan movies – Split does gradually escalate towards a climax containing some ultramundane, borderline supernatural elements, after spending some of its runtime maintaining a pretence of ambiguity on the matter. If you’re looking for a grounded, realistic thriller you may feel somewhat betrayed by this late-game tonal shift, so I think you’d better go in already armed with this bit of foreknowledge.
In conclusion, Split marks an unlikely resurrection for Shyamalan as he comes back to the sort of cinema which had initially endeared him to critics and audiences. It’s definitely too early to tell whether we’re witnessing the beginning of a more creatively mature phase in the director’s career, or merely a fluke before he falls back onto a path of B-movie embarrassments. Whichever the case, it was good to have him back for a while.
[Verdict: POSITIVE]

Top 10 Mind-Bending Films You Can Watch Before Tenet
It is a rabbit hole. You wait for a film. You make theories. You hype it up. You wait. You wait. You wait.
No worries. If you love mind-bending films, then read on. I will mention some movies that you can watch or rewatch again while waiting for Tenet.
We can agree that there is always something different about mind-bending films, like an art piece painted by Leonardo Da Vinci, that has layers of meaning. You can spend hours on it, and when you finally get it, you feel euphoric.
To make your day good, better, or great, we have listed 10 films with a mind-bending story structure while you wait for Christopher Nolan’s summertime epic.
Primer
This Shane Carruth film is so complex that it will take a genius to understand the film in the first watch.Furthermore, if you read the explanation from dedicated forums and websites, you still need some time before you can finally begin to wrap your head around it.
Shane Carruth was a mathematics student and former engineer when he wrote, acted, and directed the film that also stars David Sullivan. The structure of the film is one of a kind and has never been repeated ever since.
Donnie Darko
You will not get the film after the credits have rolled. But once you get it, you will have a hard time getting the film out of your head. The film is so very well crafted that you will not find anything else that is even remotely similar to this.
The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Maggie Gyllenhaal as brothers and sisters who are, in fact, as the name suggested brothers and sisters in real life.
Jake plays the role of Donnie, who meets a figure outside his house who tells him that the world is about to end in 28 days, 6 hours 42 minutes and 12 seconds.
Inception.”
It’s a film that took 10 years of Christopher Nolan’s life, but everybody agrees that it was worth it. It’s a film that has dictated filmmaking since the time it was released.
The ensemble cast is everything you need to accentuate the brilliant plot of the film. Leonardo DiCaprio plays the role of Dominic Cobb, a professional thief who steals ideas from a person’s mind. He is offered a job by a Japanese businessman Ken Watanabe which, if he successfully completes, can get him back to his children whom he had left years ago.
The very last scene has created a very passionate debate and speculation among fans, and that precisely is the reason that has made this film so special.
Source Code
This is another Jake Gyllenhaal film that can be treated as a masterpiece. It is also a very emotional film that can make you appreciate your life at the end. In the flick, a helicopter pilot is a part of a military operation which enables him to experience the final moments of Sean Fentress.
Coherence
This is a 2013 film written and directed by James Ward Bykrit, who had previously worked in Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The man took nine months to write the script and then shot it with friends over the weekend.
It deals with friends who get together for dinner when a comet passes, leading to highly mysterious occurrences. The film stars Emily Baldoni in the lead role.
2001 Space Odyssey
Often regarded as the greatest film of all time alongside Godfather, this 1968 film should be preserved as one of the finest gems in the history of cinema. The film has layers of meaning which have been analyzed by many. The novel, written concurrently with the script, is often regarded as the key to its many unanswered questions. The story deals with two astronauts and an AI HAL 9000 voyage to Jupiter.
Mulholland Drive
David Lynch’s psychological thriller from the year 2001 is often regarded as the best psychological neo-noir film by many polls on different platforms. The film also earned him an Oscar nomination.
It follows the story of an actress who is played by Naomi Watts, who meets an amnesiac car accident victim played by Laura Harring.
V for Vendetta
This is a film based on DC/ Vertigo comics that came out in 1988. V is an anarchist played by Hugo Weaving, who befriends Natalie Portman’s character, Evey.
The film revolves around V’s masterplan to bring down an authoritarian government.
The film has been remembered as the spirit of the weak against the powerful and has been quite famous in recent times, especially during the Black Lives Matter movement.
Annihilation
The film is in the horror genre and deals with the group of women scientists who venture out in their expedition inside a quarantined zone where plants and animals show unexplainable mutated characteristics because of an alien presence.
Though the film failed to impress at the box office, it has garnered praise over the years.
Fight Club
The film had to be on the list. This 1999 thriller stars Brad Pitt and Edward Norton in the lead roles. Norton’s character is the protagonist of the film.
The film deals with the protagonist’s frustration with society and his desperate measures to escape it. The protagonist meets a mysterious yet highly philosophical man named Tyler Durden and joins hands with him to start their cult named Fight Club.
The finale of the film is so profoundly mind-boggling that you would be compelled to re-watch the film again.
Conclusion
Films like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Enemy, and The Butterfly Effect can also make anybody’s list without any dispute and at least deserve an honorable mention here. There are Netflix TV series such as Dark, Black Mirror, and Altered Carbon that can engage you while you await the release of Tenet.
