this fandom is full of racist and idiotic asshats and the only people i see who call this shit out are sydcarmy shippers.
@currymanganese made a post about the fandom wiki entry on sydney and carmy's relationship, which you can only guess how accurate it is. here's a link to sydney's 'the bear' wiki page as it currently appears.
this is a snippet of sydney's wonderful personality and characterization.
However, she is bad at accepting 'no' or being told not right now. Her perfectionist nature does not allow her to let go of things, either. This often causes her to push for too much, too far, too fast, and then suffer the negative consequences because she did not understand why she was being told not to do something and would not let it go or wait. In times of stress, or rebounding from being treated poorly herself, she forgets her dream of making the kitchen environment safe and can abusively lash out with the worst of them. She resents that her business and administrative skills are often more highly valued at "The Bear" than her chef and cooking skills, though she excels in those areas. She tends to come across to others as young, anxious, and very insecure, wanting a lot of reassurance, until she finds her comfortable regiment and standardized process for completing a task, which allows her talent to come through. She often feels like a fish out of water with the rest of the staff, who are older, poorer, lack formal training, and have long-established ties, but is determined to make it work if it means learning under Carmy and having some control over the kitchen she works in.
this is a snippet of sydney's season 1 section.
Sydney becomes fixated on perfecting the risotto and becomes more aggrieved with every rejection. After being told her latest version is "tremendous", yet still cannot be offered on the dinner menu, Sydney, in a minor act of petty rebellion, serves the dish to a customer. With this act, Sydney is responsible for shoving The Beef down the road to its destruction. The customer, it turns out, is a famous food critic. He writes a glowing review of The Beef, and raves about risotto. The restaurant goes viral. Carmy is peeved, because the reason he wouldn't put the dish on the menu, besides it not being ready, is because risotto is very labor intensive. They do not have the staff to make it during dinner service. Additionally, the high brow dish does not fit the fast casual nature of a sandwich shop's menu. Richie rags on Sydney with suspicion, believing she knew the customer was a critic and gave him her dish to force them to put it on the menu, and to gain herself fame. The restaurant going viral coincides with Sydney's latest innovation push to use ordering tablets and accept online to go orders. Once again going too much, too fast, they begin using the new system before they're ready. Sydney makes a fatal error with the new technology by failing to set up website parameters. As a result, the second the system is turned on, the tiny restaurant is flooded with hundreds upon hundreds of to-go orders, all due for pick up shortly and even more coming in every second. In person, customers are asking for the famous risotto…which is not on the menu. Carmy explodes at Sydney and demands she get out of the way before she keeps making the catastrophe worse, Sydney, who doesn't handle feelings of rejection or inadequacy well, spirals. She lashes out at the staff, and engages in a vicious fight with Richie, who never wanted the tablet system. After saying some truly cruel things about him as a father, Sydney stabs him, whether on purpose or on accident is uncertain, and then immediately resigns amidst the chaos.
"With this act, Sydney is responsible for shoving The Beef down the road to its destruction." IJBOL
and oh look, in season 2, sydney reconnects with claire and goes to al-anon with carmy.
Throughout the process, Sydney reconnects with Claire, who is now a resident in emergency medicine. Sydney attends Al-Anon meetings along with Carmy, discussing her search for fun.
awww sydney faces a setback when ebra stops attending culinary school and sees claire as a threat. sounds about right.
As the opening of The Bear approaches, Sydney continues to work on the menu with Tina's help. She faces a setback when Ebra stops attending culinary school. Sydney also begins to see Claire as a threat to Carmy's focus. Despite these challenges, Sydney remains committed to her role in the restaurant and prepares for the soft opening.
even better, richie alone successfully handles the situation at the soft open. she and carmy even reconcile!
During the soft opening, Sydney feels the pressure to impress her father. She runs the kitchen while Richie takes charge of the front of house. Issues arise, such as running out of forks and Carmy getting trapped in the walk-in fridge. However, Richie successfully handles the situation and takes over expediting. Sydney feels fulfilled after impressing her father, and she and Carmy reconcile.
this page is full of misogynoir and shitty, incorrect OPINIONS about sydney adamu. are these things not supposed to be objective? and yet they make sydney out to be an incompetent, jealous, hysterical, aggressive overstepper. we see this frequently on social media sites when sydney is discussed. and no one ever wants to draw attention to this for some reason. where's the news and media? the hit tweets? the constant posts complaining about this issue?
all people ever want to talk about is how sydcarmy is terrible and how shippers have terrible comprehension of the show. yet this garbage slips by all the time. maybe it's because the same people focusing all their energy on shippers hold those very same opinions, but i think a lot of people simply have tunnel vision and simply do not gaf about sydney.
it's fucking exhausting watching the general fandom treat syd as less than human and have zero understanding of her character. it's like yelling into the void. and i would very much like to know how this garbage wiki can be corrected.
#sydney adamu#the bear#the bear fx#sydcarmy#misogynoir#do not speak on sydney adamu you wretched creatures#text#fandom nonsense#syd's entire page needs to be edited from start to finish like

Strange Fate linkdump: Questing, Empathy and Endgames
Huge long post! Linkdump and many many thoughts that wandered through my mind while going through these links.
Last Lullaby stuff:
https://www.thebookseller.com/news/hachette-signs-new-l-j-smith
About the international licensing of The Last Lullaby in 2013. Strange Fate is the big obvious lost book but it’s not the only one.
https://booknode.com/the_last_lullaby_0705503
French bookseller page about The Last Lullaby, with back cover blurb in English but no cover picture. So whatever happened happened before an artist could be commissioned. The book seems to follow unscarred teen Brionwy rather than scarred child Crispy who we met in the Strange Fate chapter
https://spotlightreport.net/featured/burn-bright-presents-l-j-smith-interview
2013 interview about The Last Lullaby. In this interview Crispy and Brionwy are two different characters, though I’d always had the impression that they were the same person and Brionwy was Crispy’s real name. Maybe just because Brionwy is the name in the title and then it’s Crispy’s story, back in whatever first incarnation I read of it whatever incarnation that was. And it’s poetic nfor the scarred child to have a beautiful name.
So we have the short story Brionwy’s Lullaby about Brionwy in the harem and the Strange Fate chapter about Crispy in the ruins. Two pieces. Less than we have of Strange Fate, but there is a looooot of worldbuilding in Brionwy’s Lullaby. Lots of worldbuilding but no hint of where the story goes next. Do Brionwy and Crispy meet? Is there some connection between them? How does the story end? In the Strange Fate incarnation of the story this future is traded for a happier timeline when characters in our time avert the apocalypse but as a separate story how would it conclude?
Honestly I’m sadder about this book than I am about Strange Fate; I loves me some YA dystopias and the whole dragons and vampires thing is just neat. But this book’s as lost as lost can be.

Article about the upcoming Forbidden Game TV series. Forbidden Game is a Simon & Schuster series, not Alloy, so while I’m sure Ms. Smith has no say in how the show will go she will at least get royalties! However much royalties book authors get from TV shows, no idea how much that is.

“LJ Smith has just revealed that its horror trilogy novels...” Um. Not quite.
I looked through half a dozen articles about the Forbidden Game TV series and none of them had anything from Ms. Smith. I knew the chance that this would draw comment from her was only a tiny chance, but it seemed worth looking.

Into the meta: Aubrey Clark and the ghostwritten books
https://www.goodreads.com/author/list/5760167.Aubrey_Clark
Books by Aubrey Clark. Secret Circle and Vampire Diaries. I assumed Aubrey Clark is a woman and the other book listed is by a man with the same name, but Aubrey is traditionally a male name and modernly a female name so who knows. Hardly the first time a dude wrote a series aimed at girls under a female name.
https://www.romance.io/authors/54558f9b87eac323ffb2cc31/aubrey-clark
Bio listing Ms. Clark as a she, and classifying her books as romances. Says she’s been writing for eight years. Just on the VD/SC stuff or did she write before? Alloy hiring an existing writer to ghostwrite and that existing writer using a pen name so her new work wouldn’t be connected with her old work is perfectly possible. I swear I read somewhere that Ms. Clark was Ms. Smith’s editor, or her “person” with Alloy, making her signing on as ghostwriter a bit of a betrayal… but I can’t find my source.
And how much of a betrayal is it really, if Ms. Smith got fired it’s not Ms. Clark’s fault if the series got offered to her, and who could say no to getting to write for a series you know? It’s a job and a chance to be a published author and nobody should be judged for grabbing that candy if offered it.
I wish we could hear what happened from Aubrey Clark’s side, just because the story of What Happened to Strange Fate is a mystery I to figure out… it’s easy for me to forget this mystery isn’t a Nancy Drew video game, it’s people’s real lives. Ms. Clark is not the villain, she’s a writer in a situation we don’t fully understand but she’s just a writer like any writer.

“Read the contract.’ This one is interesting because it’s the only one that isn’t in defense of Ms. Smith. She should indeed read her contracts unless she wants to just be a fanfic writer, which… I don’t think I’ve ever heard of an author going from published to fanfic, but why not?
Also, good question, where was Ms. Smith’s agent? And where is Ms. Smith’s agent these days when someone should maybe be being the Strange Fate Police?
Unrelated: I swear I read an article from Alloy’s perspective about what happened. Maybe it was this one and I thought it was from Alloy when it wasn’t. It is the only article not in support of Ms. Smith that I could find.

A long blog post that goes into detail about the writing of some of the books, how to tell Ms. Smith’s style from the ghostwriter’s, sentence length and similes and stuff, all very academic! I’ve retyped a couple pieces of Ms. Smith’s writing and I noticed she handles punctuation-with-quotes differently than I do, making it very weird to retype. This is an interesting one. Just an article about the Secret Circle books and how they’re kinda bad but actually good. Which they are.
That’ll keep y’all busy for a while!
Quest wishlist: I wish we could ask someone in the publishing industry about rights to series and rights to “publication canceled” books and how all that stuff works. And I wish we could hear Aubrey Clark’s side of the story, but it just seems unkind to reach out to her to ask about this.
But the problem is… I call it “the quest for Strange Fate” because I’m melodramatic and like calling things quests, but what it the victory condition for this one? The obvious: we win if we find and read Strange Fate, but I don’t think that will ever happen. No matter how much we learn about what happened that won’t make Strange Fate appear.
I do wish we could tell LJ Smith that plenty of authors these days have a Patreon. If the people who still care about the lost books and the story of Ms. Smith could turn that caring into actual useful help for the people and maybe the books too that would be the best outcome. That would be a successful quest.
A darker timeline possibility: maybe S&S read Strange Fate and it wasn’t any good. Ms. Smith is a good writer. But take a good writer and give her 20 years off from writing, and make those the 20 years where the teen experience of life changed radically, her genres of choice became big and popular and evolved and built up tropes, and language itself did… things…
I stan language but it’s a little sus how new lettery bois go brr everywhere I look. I love it, but it’s humbling having to ask my niece what all the new words mean, and why so many of them seem to begin with S!
And Ms. Smith is sixty and has twenty years of rewriting Strange Fate, pulling it apart and tinkering until it probably doesn’t much resemble the book she started in 1998. Stir up all this in a pot and we’ve got a recipe for making a talented author drop a mediocre book. Maybe S&S read it, said “it’s a dud, the fandom is 20 years old, let’s just not” and Ms. Smith retired from public life in defeat.
This makes an unhappy sort of sense, but it doesn’t answer the question of why The Last Lullaby never appeared either.
Anyway. This has been a long post, lots of links and some thoughts on the philosophy of questing.

What Happened To Small Bob?
We see a lot of artists and writers including the little skeleton cat in moments with Nico, but I can’t exactly remember what truly happened to that cat.
I know he was in Tartarus with his namesake, Bob the titan, but did he ever leave?
Tomorrow, I’m planning on going through the House of Hades and Blood of Olympus books for an honest to god answer to my internal dilemma.
But, for now, I’m going to skim through what my memory can recall. Both about the books, when he’s mentioned, and the fanfics/artwork that include Small Bob.
I remember that Small Bob is the result of Atlas using a Saber-tooth tiger tooth, which failed because he was trying for a dino if I recall. Atlas destroyed them, and that was that until Bob found him in Tartarus. As far as I recall, we don’t see Small Bob after Percy and Annabeth leave Tartarus.
I’m an avid fanfic reader, I’ve been doing so for around 2-3 years now. This account itself is more than 2 years old. I was also originally in very few fandoms. To name them, Harry Potter, Voltron, and Percy Jackson.
I was originally on Wattpad and Fanfic.net, but a lot of fanfic haunts me there. Though I still have an old account. So I’m going to talk about what, according to the ones I’ve read, the majority of them include. They usually try including them when it’s Nico or Percy centric, bringing Small Bob back for some angst/fluff.
Small Bob is usually there to be a cute pet, when he’s included. And they keep his skills/personality basic. I know he’s a cat/tiger but animals have personalities too.
He's never mentioned in combat, although I think he fought monsters with Bob. He never does anything outside of helping to make Percy/Nico happy.
Using a slightly more specific user, Takara Phoenix, they include a bunch of characters throughout their works. They don’t include Small Bob in all of their fics, though when they do Small Bob is a tiny, domesticated cat. Now, I’m not hating. I love Takara and have been obsessed with their work for a long time. They were one of the people who inspired me to just go out and write my stories. I had bad anxiety about posting stuff, even through an anon account.
This isn’t about me though. We’re talking about Small Bob.
Now, I’m going to do a brief skim of google. 1st source I’m going to go through is the Riordan Wiki. a few things catching my attention is that we have no clue how Small Bob truly got to Tartarus, Small Bob was the last survivor of the Saber-Tooth’s, and Small Bob can switch through forms.
A small snippet directly from the Wiki says, “His fate afterward is currently unknown but like Bob and Damasen, he was presumably destroyed by Tartarus for his actions.”
Now, I’m going to talk about the first three before I get to that last snippet. We get an assumption from Percy that when Atlas told his servants to take the Saber-Tooth’s away, they were sent to Tartarus. Though it’s just an assumption. What Percy thinks isn’t solid evidence.
Though we have nothing else to use. So for now, we can only assume that Small Bob was sent to Tartarus by Atlas.
Next, Small Bob is the last surviving tiger from the Smithsonian Museum. I can’t recall the exact number that were created. Maybe 4? Anyways, if we’re assuming what we did earlier, we know they were all sent to Tartarus. So, what happened to them. Did they actually die in Tartarus? Were they just separated? The wiki doesn’t say.
Since it’s unlikely that Small Bob was the only one to survive. I am going to assume that they were just separated and no one truly knows how many survived.
Thirdly, Small Bob has 2 forms. A small, kitten form as I’ll call it, and a second large, tiger form. His kitten form, I’m assuming, is likely what everyone writes when they write Small Bob. A kitten who isn’t that strong, who is just a baby. His second form is actually something I barely recalled, if at all. It’s his attack form. He’s large, strong, not as cuddly as his tiny self is.
It’s very interesting to realize that people don’t remember or don’t prefer this large, tiger form. Because then you realize, because so many people don’t mention it or talk about it, I almost forgot it existed.
And for the final segment of the Wiki, we’re going to talk about Small Bob’s unknown ending. The wiki says that it’s unknown what happened to the saber-tooth. He could have died. Like the person who wrote this Wiki Page said. Tartarus could have destroyed them for ruining Gaea’s attempt at World Domination.
In reality, people who include Small Bob in work taking place after Tartarus are taking creative liberties. Which I fully support. I hate the idea that Small Bob died, even if it’s the most logical idea. I would love for someone to write a fic about Small Bob. Or to even include Small Bob.
Small Bob has his own tag, which only has 20 works on it. I can’t wait to go through it later, but for now, I’m writing this… whatever it’s classified as.
I did want to get through more, but there isn’t much to begin with.
There’s a Tumblr tag and Pinterest tags. But going through both briefly, we can see that they’re not very popular. Occasionally a few get popular and widespread, but those are few and definitely not as popular as some other tags get regularly.
There was this one Tumblr post about Bob and Small Bob, where they reform and get to the surface, meeting with an old Percabeth couple. I can’t find it currently, but if I do I’ll link it. It brings up his 2nd form and is quite sweet.

Spot the big bird
I woke up this morning around 6 a.m. to the sound of a pheasant rooster screaming toot-toot under my window. After that, there was wing flapping, as the bird hopped to another spot. He kept making noise all morning, making it impossible for me to sleep. I don’t normally wake up at 6 a.m. on a Saturday, so the rest of my day has been more or less foggy. But I think I get 50 points for spotting a big bird, right?
In this week’s vlog, Rhett and Link go biking by the L.A. river. I know we are currently mostly making jokes about Rhett’s hair going wild, but can I just say that Link looks a bit like an older lady who has just removed the curlers from their hair after the night and forgot to do the final swoop through the curls, in the beginning of the video? (I admit I occasionally have that hair-do, too, even without the curlers. But I feel I had to mention his hair.)
I’m a simple girl living in the country side, and for me, the idea of a river turned into a concrete ditch is a bit odd - even though I know my brother living in a more urban environment, often goes biking by a similar “constructed” river. Not knowing anything about the L.A., I went on to google the bicycle route the guys are taking in this video, and was glad to find out it has its own Wiki page, in case you’re interested!
It seems there is a bit of a power play going on between the guys, as the drive to the start of their path. Rhett is driving this time, but Link is more familiar with the biking route, so who is in charge? I don’t quite know how a bike trip could be turned into a commune living arrangement type of a situation, or how a commune could suddenly turn into a sex cult, but evidently, whoever tells the others they can only have sex with the one in charge, but not with each other, is the leader. So...how does this apply to biking? Also which is it, if there is always a leader? And how the heck did we get to sex cults this early in the video?
I just love how self-concious Rhett is feeling about wearing the bicycle helmet. And, he actually asked for Link’s opinion about which helmet he should wear. I think it’s very adorable, really, and I just love how Link always finds new, innovative ways to compliment Rhett’s mane. This is the first time I’ve heard the word asinine, but Link says it in the most loving way possible, and to be quite honest, he isn’t wrong. But thankfully, Rhett fixes his lopsided hair, and everything works out just fine.
I have to say, bicycle helmets make me feel very self-concious, too. I actually have a helmet that is almost identical to the one Link has - solid black and practical. Why do we need to feel stupid when wearing something that can literally save our lives? (But since helmets do look kinda stupid, at least solid black goes with everything.) And here’s a Grandson of Anarchy, Rhett McLaughlin, for y’all to enjoy, in his full glory:
We have more lakes than rivers around where I live, and most bicycle routes here are basically dirt roads surrounded by rural landscape, but I think I prefer it that way. The scenery around the L.A. river is too open, too loud and way too constructed for my liking, but there is something very grandiose about the river. Rhett also looks pretty grandiose next to Link. I should be used to their size difference by now, but Link looks so tiny, again. He’s small enough to fit in Rhett’s pocket.
I wasn’t getting at all bored by watching the guys on their bikes, but I admit, the idea of a scavenger hunt is pretty appealing, even if the guys probably won’t find people with old money in the river. But there might have been someone rich there, since who in their right mind throws away a fairly functional looking stroller? Don’t they cost a fortune?
I don’t think the river cleaning crew was joking about finding dead bodies in the river. I know in the nearest bigger city in my area, which has a rapid with dams running across the centre, they empty the river of all water every now and then (usually in the spring), and bodies have been found more than once. (Which reminds me, one time I was on a bicycle ride with my mom, and we took a short cut through the woods, and found a dead goat there. It was horrible. It smelled so bad. There were flies everywhere. And now I’ve given everyone reading this nightmares. Sorry.)
I just realized that the L.A. river was probably where they filmed that one chase scene in Terminator 2. Am I right? I knew those concrete slopes looked somehow familiar. No wonder I had an unpleasant feeling about that river. I saw T2 way too young - they should never have allowed me into the theater at the age of 12. But never mind about that.
There is a lot of junk in that river, and it does make me kinda mad, too, just like Rhett. I once found a whole VCR in the place I like to go pick mushrooms, so a VHS tape in a river isn’t surprising. One thing good about the digital age is that there aren’t quite that many old VHS or mix tapes lying around. The mix tape of 2020 is a Spotify playlist, I guess.
Since I clearly have nothing better to do, I ended up doing an internet search on different cross symbols, to find the one carved in the tree stump Rhett and Link find. It appears to be a cross potent. No idea why one would be in L.A. river, unless it’s just a very complicated way to make the tree stump rot quicker.
I think my new favourite thing is seeing Link just give up and start laughing, after trying to get Rhett talk about littering without threatening to kill someone. I think it’s only fair to talk trash about people who throw their trash in nature, and a message coming from an angry biker is probably a good idea. But I just love hearing Link snort and giggle.
After the rat chase vlog, and today’s episode, I think there soon is enough material for a full Rhett and Link horror movie. I would love to hear what the people, who asked if everything was okay with the guys, were thinking. One day, the title of these vlogs is going to be “The One Where They Get Arrested”.
I’m not a qualified gif maker, so I can’t capture all the pelvic thrusts of this vlog in their full glory. As enjoyable as it was to see the guys do their solo acts, some things just are more fun when done together. My only excuse for the edit below is that if they have the audacity to film something like this without even moving the camera between takes, they are asking to be edited together. It took me less than 5 minutes to do the edit, which, yes, is pretty crappy, but I just couldn’t miss the opportunity, when it was served to me on a silver platter.
#rhett and link vlog#rhett and link#vlog 1#the one where the boys go biking#so much litter#l.a. river#so many pelvic thrusts#also#i tried to keep score about everything they found in the river#but i failed#and they didn't really spot a proper big bird

Digimon Spotlight: Thundermon
What’s this? It’s been a year and now it’s time to do another Spotlight because I’ve been neglecting things and been busy, but I did it guys! I’m sorry for the wait but I hope things are more worthwhile.
Note for everyone who isn’t in the Discord; 1.3 is mechanically done, there simply isn’t a PDF yet. This does include the TCG Tamer packet and the Tamer Qualities (although the latter two may require tweaking as the PDF comes out.) This spotlight will be using those mechanics, and if you want to find the new rules try this link:
Main book: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Ltxa4nx_ghGl4LjI6WYrT47MDdS7dQVj2PWLVRt0fpw/edit?usp=sharing
TCG Tamers: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Zp-E9SDgkRJromTB45jXwjzZM6RZcSEntT5xlMptILA/edit?usp=sharing
Tamer Playtest Packet: https://docs.google.com/document/d/181uzmwn94XqkKkTWomM3TbZCGd53sUJVUUFW8Geb-vc/edit?usp=sharing
Either way I put this off for a bit, but it’s time to enjoy a new spotlight. I’ll be only using the fluff from the direct lines from here on out, because I want to avoid redundancy with what I’ve posted. I’ll also be updating the spotlight catalog ASAP.
As per usual, artwork not mine, builds not final.
“Also known as the "Digimon Dynamo", it is conjectured to be a member of the Mamemon-species. Its tiny body has the properties of a magnet, and is always clad in electricity and discharging lightning.” - Thundermon’s Wiki page
There isn’t much about Thundermon’s personality or general environment, but going with what we know about the Mamemon-species, it’s safe to assume it has a generally friendly demeanor but it has a nasty side with immense destructive power.
This might also generally lead Thundermon to have a bit of a trickster or mischevious personality. This fits with it being a somewhat smaller species of Digimon with deceptive levels of power hiding behind its outer appearance. This can make for some really fun roleplay scenarios, similar to how the Icemon line works.
Evolutionary Line Ideas
Fresh: Leafmon, MetalKoromon, Botamon In-Training: Minomon, Koromon, Tsunomon Rookie: Elecmon, Kokuwamon, Kunemon, Toy Agumon, Thundermon* Champion: Thundermon, Mamemon* Ultimate: Mamemon, BigMamemon, CatchMamemon, MameTyramon, MetalMamemon Mega: PrinceMamemon, BanchoMamemon, TonosamaMamemon Burst: Various custom Burst Modes.
*While Mamemon may canonically be an Ultimate level Digimon, I feel like the line’s most direct evolutions have a bottleneck at the Champion stage. Since most of the other Ultimate-tier Digimon are a subspecies of Mamemon, it feels acceptable to potentially shift Mamemon down to the champion stage to avoid this. But be sure to talk to your GM about it.
“It digivolved in a harsh environment. Contrary to its cute appearance, it conceals a terrifying destructive power. With the exception of one Digimon, it is perhaps the most powerful class. The large hands attached to its small body are capable of turning into powerful bombs and detaching themselves. Its nickname is the "Smiley Bomber".” - Mamemon’s Wiki Page
“It exists as the boss of Mamemon. As a matter of fact, it's suggested that it is an aggregation of Mamemon. Since normal Mamemon are the same size as Rookie Digimon, they possess a degree of power that couldn't even be imagined from their appearance, but as its name suggests, BigMamemon is dozens or even hundreds of times the size of a Mamemon. However, the reason why a "Mamemon" is this size is still unclear. Its personality is extremely gentle, and it hates conflict and battle, so it is always playing with its Mamemon followers. The text on the soles of its shoes reads "BIG" and "MAME".” - BigMamemon’s wiki page
“A Mutant Digimon resulting from the evolution of Mamemon after it was fused with the data from a file management software. It has a serious personality and an uncompromising side, and seems to think that managing Digi-Eggs is its duty. It is also capable of walking without needing to float, by using its arm parts as legs.” - CatchMamemon’s wiki page
“It is a tiny Digimon feared as the "Small Tyranny" (Tiny Tyrant). It condensed Tyrannomon's data into its tiny body, pushing its ferocious nature and combat instinct to the surface, where they have strikingly manifested in its behavior. While its body may be tiny, rather than assaulting opponents en masse, it always acts by itself, swooping down on Digimon roaming its own territory without wasting breath on discussion, and always making a show of being the strongest in its domain. However, because its body is tiny, its territory is not very wide. With its physical strength condensed several hundred-fold into its tiny body, and its tenacious jaw that can crunch even super-hard armor, it possesses fighting strength that surpasses even that of gigantic Dinosaur Digimon.” - MameTyramon’s wiki page
It digivolved further in strength than Mamemon, who holds the alias of "Smiley Bomber". As usual, if one is deceived by its cute appearance, they will have a terrible experience. Nine-tenths of its body is mechanized, and it has the Psycho Blaster equipped to its left arm.” - MetalMamemon’s wiki page.
Thundermon and subverting expectations
Thundermon is one of those tiny Digimon who pack a real wallop, making it a really good way to mix a bit of humor in with your build without having to go full meme mode. If even Mamemon is only the size of the average Rookie, and judging by its appearance in Adventure 02, Thundermon is only about the size of someone’s eyeball at best. It’s tiny! This makes the damage it can dish out all the more amusing.
However you can take this in other ways besides size; giving the digimon an upbeat and carefree personality only to have it turn around and destroy the obstacles in its way. This can also make a wonderful partner concept; but don’t put too much into the idea of plowing your way through every encounter, a GM always has the ability to one-up a player’s Digimon.
“Having taken in data on the Net concerning a royal family, it is a prince of the Mamemon world. Partnering with KingEtemon, it plays the part of a mock royal family of the Digital World, and that's why it looks so gorgeous. Although its personality isn't awful, it was incited by KingEtemon and is convinced that it truly is a member of the royal family, and the embarrassing thing is that it considers even the "Royal Knights" to be its subordinates. Despite its appearance, the part that it boasts is its tremendous destructive power, since it is a Mega, after all.” - PrinceMamemon’s wiki page.

Variants and Subspecies
Being an element based Digimon, Thundermon is a really easy Digimon to make variants of, although this list will also go over a few new Mamemon variants to boot.
Fireballmon (Red): this species of Thundermon emits shocking amounts of heat and flame despite its small size, and is significantly more aggressive than its normal Thundermon cousins. However, if Fireballmon aren’t careful they’re liable to wear themselves out much quicker than other variants, becoming exhausted and unable to produce much more heat. Many tamers who partner with Fireballmon will carry it in their pocket, where its aura of heat can keep the tamer warm even in the coldest environments. (+Accuracy, +Damage, -Armor, -Dodge)
Snowballmon (Blue): this type of Thundermon is the polar opposite of its red cousin; the Digimon is naturally cold to the touch and quite shy. It uses its tiny size to avoid conflict by hiding in crevices that only Digimon much weaker than itself could fit into such as Fresh and In-Training stage Digimon. However, due to living in the unforgiving arctic environment, Snowballmon are exceptionally hardy and able to go long distances through meter deep snow without tiring. Many Snowballmon also cover themselves in discarded furs similar to Gabumon, in order to stay warm in their icy environment. (+Health, +Armor, -Accuracy, -Damage)
Smokeballmon (Green): this variant of Thundermon repels intruders with its constant emission of toxic fumes. Very few Digimon can stand to be near the stench, with the exception of Digimon such as Numemon and Sukamon. And in the event that an opponent gets close enough to be a threat, Smokeballmon is capable of firing blasts of debilitating toxins from the Mame Blaster on its arm. (++Accuracy, -Armor)
SkullMamemon (Ultimate): A Mamemon whose body has worn down to almost nothing, it’s resorted to dark magic in order to keep moving its body, spells it stole from Wizardmon. This bouncing skull Digimon is no less dangerous for it, combining Mamemon’s terrifying offensive potential with the utility of a variety of magical skills.
JetMamemon (Ultimate): A Mamemon who appropriated technology from Andromon. In this case, a jetpack and a specialized cannon which fires hyper-compressed air at the opponent strong enough to dent Chrome Digizoid. JetMamemon combines terrifying melee potential with devastating ranged power and mobility.
BanchoMamemon: Burst Mode (Burst)
EmperorMamemon (Burst): through decades of diligent training and discipline, PrinceMamemon has gone through a terrifying change. Clad in shining armor, this variant of Mamemon rules its domain fairly, but without mercy to those who oppose its laws. Its optimistic and naive nature makes it very easy to manipulate, and many evil Digimon of shrewd nature have used an EmperorMamemon as a figurehead to further their own goals.
Building the line from Champion Up
Thundermon
Wound Boxes: 10 Stage: Champion Size: Tiny (+2 Agility, -2 Body) Speed: 11 (Jump 11/11)
Health: 5 Accuracy: 6 Damage: 5 Dodge: 5 Armor: 5
Body: 3 Brains: 8 Agility: 7 BIT: 2 RAM: 2 CPU: 2
Misc. Qualities
Speed Striker Optimization (1 DP) Armor Piercing Rank 3 (3 DP) Certain Strike Rank 3 (6 DP) Charge Attack (1 DP) Extra Movement: Jumper (0DP*) *For everyone not aware, Champion stage Digimon in the current version get a 1DP discount on their first purchase of Extra Movement.
Attack List
Thunderball [Ranged][Damage][Blast][Armor Piercing 6] Thunder Bomber [Melee][Damage][Charge] Thunderbolt [Ranged][Stun][Line][Certain Strike 3]
Build Breakdown: Thundermon is a solid all-rounder type Digimon. It doesn’t excel in any particular area of combat, it’s not incredibly durable but it’s not likely to go down in one hit either. It’s got a mixed bag of tricks to utilize; Thunder Bomber to deal some melee damage or reposition itself, Thunderball as your go-to attack for damage, and Thunderbolt to provide a bit of support in slowing down the enemy.
This means Thundermon is best to fill in the gaps for what your party needs at a given moment; if you need someone in the melee fray, it’s got an option, if you need to stand back and bombard the enemy at range, it’s got an option, and if you need to slow down an enemy, it’s got an option.
Just be careful: with the new rules you can only use a given attack once per round unless you’ve entirely run out of attacks.
Mamemon
Wound Boxes: 14 Stage: Ultimate Size: Tiny (+1 Agility, -1 Body) Speed: 10 (Jump 10/10)
Health: 6 (7) Accuracy: 7 Damage: 7 Dodge: 7 Armor: 5 (7)
Body: 6 Brains: 11 Agility: 8 BIT: 4 RAM: 3 CPU: 3
Misc. Qualities
Close Combat Optimization (1 DP) Flurry (3DP) Armor Piercing Rank 3 (3 DP) Certain Strike Rank 3 (6 DP) Charge Attack (1 DP) Extra Movement: Jumper (0DP*) Weapon Rank 3 (3 DP) Chrome Digizoid Weaponry (1 DP) Chrome Digizoid Armor (1 DP)
Attack List
Smiley Bomb [Melee][Damage][Armor Piercing 6][Weapon] Strike Upper [Melee][Knockback][Weapon] Buster Drive [Melee][Burst] One-two Rush [Melee][Charge][Certain Strike 3][Weapon]
Build Breakdown: Mamemon has entered the fray as a bruiser; a melee striker with some solid survivability, but it’s not exactly something you would want to be your main tank unless you entirely lack one for the fight.
It still has a bit of that utility that Thundermon had; it can cover a few more things than its main job, it’s specialized significantly better for melee combat now. With One-two Rush and Smiley Bomb with another free basic attack from Flurry, it can really dish out the hurt.
It has a few other tricks up its sleeve; if it has to push something back a bit for one reason or another, Strike Upper can be your saving grace, and if you’re surrounded by enemies, Buster Drive might be a good trade-off over the single target power of Smiley Bomb and One-two Rush.
BanchoMamemon
Wound Boxes: 19 Stage: Mega Size: Tiny (+1 Agility, -1 Body) Speed: 16 (Jump 16/16)
Health: 7 (9) Accuracy: 9 Damage: 9 Dodge: 9 Armor: 5 (9)
Body: 8 Brains: 14 Agility: 10 BIT: 5 RAM: 5 CPU: 4
Misc. Qualities
Close Combat Optimization (1 DP) Flurry (3DP) Armor Piercing Rank 3 (3 DP) Certain Strike Rank 3 (6 DP) Charge Attack (1 DP) Extra Movement: Jumper (0DP*) Weapon Rank 3 (3 DP) Obsidian Digizoid Weaponry (3 DP) Red Digizoid Armor (2 DP) Speedy Rank 2 (2 DP)
Attack List
Bukkomi Otokodama [Melee][Damage][Armor Piercing 6][Weapon] Strike Out [Melee][Knockback][Weapon] Senbon Dokkān [Melee][Burst] Golden Rush [Melee][Charge][Certain Strike 3][Weapon][Pass] Ougon Batto [Melee][Stun]
Build Breakdown: BanchoMamemon combines the best of both Thundermon and Mamemon; still taking that all-rounder statline that lets it be a solid frontline bruiser with supporting aspects. By taking a few ranks in Speedy it’s now got Thundermon’s mobility, and with Ougon Batto it has that stun potential. Golden Rush takes the place of One-two Rush, but this time Mamemon can use it for even more positioning potential with the Pass keyword. Other than that, it takes a very similar role of its lower stage, it just does it significantly better. It isn’t afraid to get into the middle of the fray, but on the other hand it doesn’t have the survivability to soak up hits like a proper tank.
Starter Pack: Bean Machine
The starter pack Bean Machine plays up on Mamemon’s cute outer appearance and devastating combat power by having it play a mix of defense and utility early on, then turning around and hitting the opponent as hard as possible. The goal is to keep your enemy on their toes if they know what’s coming, and make them underestimate you if they don’t.
Note: this is using the updated TCG Tamers Splat. In short, each card may only have a single negative quality now, deck sizes are cut in half, and some mechanics have changed. For anything more specific, please go check out the book!.
Digivice x1 (Common, Evolution)
Ruined Meal x2 (Common, Power) Delayed Reaction Rank 2 (-2 Rarity), Trick Shot (+1 Rarity), Assisted Boost (+1 Rarity) Applies Fear, +2 Accuracy.
Bean Sprout x1 (Uncommon, Power) Iron Wall (-2 Rarity), Alias (+3 Rarity) +2 Dodge
Something Lost, Something Gained x1 (Uncommon, Power) Sacrifice Rank 2 (-4 Rarity), Potency Boost Rank 2 (+2 Rarity), Duration Boost Rank 3 (+3 Rarity)
Mamemon x1 (Rare, Attack) Last Stand (-3 Rarity), One-two Punch (+2 Rarity), Potency Boost Rank 3 (+3 Rarity) Grants: Smiley Bomber [Melee][Damage][Certain Strike 3][Armor Piercing 6][Weapon] (purchased Signature Move)
The deck has two ways to cycle through it, and both of them have to be thought through. After Digivolving to the Champion stage, you can either apply a Ruined Meal to an enemy, or use Bean Sprout on yourself. This will depend on who you’re fighting; if you want your opponent to not come anywhere near you, use Ruined Meal. If you know your opponent is definitely going to attack you and doesn’t have an AoE, you can also use Alias to get a free turn instead. Once that’s over, use Something Lost, Something gained to remove the rest of your deck and get a massive boost. Last it’s time to use Mamemon for a massive finish: with the previous bonus still active you’ll be hitting like a truck! Smiley Bomber’s Signature move status combined with your two normal attacks will put a dent in any opponent.

Camera Obscura Spell
I took a photography college course several years ago and got serious magical feels when reading about the technology of the camera obscura. I tucked it away with the intent to create a spell surrounding it at some point and then forgot about it… as if by design, I came back across my initial ideas recently and wow is it relevant!!!
The camera obscura was a predecessor to the modern film (and eventually digital) camera that worked by poking a small hole in the wall of a darkroom to allow outside light and images inside. It works essentially the same way as our own eyes work, taking an image in through a small hole (pupil), flipping it upside-down, and projecting it on the back wall (retina). Whether you want to imagine this working from your own eyes, or create a physical ‘room’ to carry out the intent is entirely up to you. The neat thing is that this is precisely the system used to view a solar eclipse back before protective glasses were widely available for viewing! I could go on for ages about how neat this technology was, especially for the time it was created, but that would make a rather lengthy post so instead I will give you the wiki link here and suggest if you would like to learn more that you follow some of the links given at the bottom of the wiki page in resources. It really is super neat (especially if you’re a photography nerd like me)!
As many of you know, this eclipse has some heavy connotations for things as they are in the United States right now… if you have not read up on just how connected the planetary alignments and symbolism of the solar eclipse are, you can read more about that here.
This spell can essentially be fine tuned for whatever situation you may want to turn around, but for the current purposes I am going to write it for the upcoming eclipse. I will actually be creating two versions. Here you will find the physical room version, and you can click here for the more covert version using your own eyes as the camera obscura!
Create your camera obscura: 1. You can find instructions for making a camera obscura (pinhole camera) here from a cardboard box. You can also make this with two pieces of paper if you do not have a box, but the image will not be as clear. Find instructions for that version here. 2. Might I suggest placing a sigil on the back wall where the image will project to solidify your intent? 3. Place this box outside during the eclipse, the world outside before the eclipse represents things as they are currently… there may be things in your own life you want to change, or you may want to take the broader focus of social justice concerns as they are right now (it’s not *just* a United States problem, so anyone could honestly use this… with or without the eclipse… I will eventually be writing a version of this spell that can be done at any time and is not as connected specifically to the eclipse) 4. As the eclipse reaches totality, you will see a small version cast into your box. Focus on the image of the problems as they currently are being filtered through the tiny pinhole and flipping on their head. As totality occurs, take a moment to view the world now laid over the world as you wish it to be and begin shifting the background 'flipped’ image to the forefront. For camera obscuras, the darker the image the clearer it is when flipped… things currently are undeniably dark on a social plane, so it should be exceptionally easy to create a clear image of change for the better. 5. As totality ends and the moon moves across to the other side of the sun, you should have the image of the world flipped on its head (the positive change) clearly in mind. This is where belief comes into play. Obviously only a few moments have passed, so it will take more time for actual change to show itself. Consider how you will personally enact change in your life and the world around you. Intent is a powerful thing, so keep that obscure image in your mind and set forward to place that image out in the world around you.
I will be doing this spell myself, with my own intent and sigils tomorrow. I will link that post with this one here as soon as it is complete. I would love to see what others do with this, too! Tag me, or feel free to place a link in the comments or reblogs of this post. :)

After much consideration and a few shots of cheap tequila, I agreed to help them out. Because why not? They have a decent idea and are trying to help the pitiful users of today’s internet. So here you guys & gals go: a guide on being a deceptive bastard on the internet and preventing people from getting a good grasp on your information. ================================================= Clone Wars If you’re reading this, then I’ll assume you’ve read The Paranoid’s Bible PDF and the PDF on OPSEC. You should have a grasp on the DOs and DON’Ts of the internet. However this will break those rules just a teensy bit in order to help you create garbage data and digital noise to obscure your real identity and information. The PB tells you that you should always use a unique username for each account and never repeat this username elsewhere, yet there is an exception to this rule: Cloning. While cloning has several names, I’m partial to the term cloning because it gets the message across—make multiple accounts across the internet using the same username but with different information concerning the basic image of its creator. When you create an account you always end up adding just a tiny bit of yourself to it. Using the ‘About Me’ or ‘Description’ or those pesky bios… you’re going to use these and differentiate each account by giving it its own persona. So while you’re following the advice of the PB team and their various guides, these cloned accounts will be vastly different. Go nuts and use your imagination but remember some simple facts. Globally, European names aren’t all that common. Look at the current global makeup of the Earth’s population. Islamic-like names of Muhammad are quite popular, as are Asian names and East Indian names. While the majority of Western sites are heavily European and Americentric, it doesn’t hurt to mix it up with a Vash or Aiko. Of course, you can then flesh it out a bit more by giving them a European or American-sounding last name and background. You want these accounts to be completely different from your own. Everything about the personas being made for these accounts are not to be related to you or your ‘main account’. You don’t want them to ever communicate with each other or touch in any way. You must keep them completely separated, which is why you’ll be making them on various forums, social media sites and chats. The more ground you cover, and the more varied the accounts are the less likely people can make a cohesive argument as why this piece of information or that data is supposed to be related to you. For example, you make an account on deviantART. They’ve a little bio app that you can adhere to your profile. So, if you made yourself a Tumblr account, then the deviantART account is to not only be different in description but also look. If you hate Undertale, then the deviantART persona loves it. You like yellow, they love blue. So on and so forth until you’ve suddenly a teenage female artist with an Asian background who moved to the U.S. and knows very little about their own Asian heritage, ergo they cling to their last name which sounds Japnese-ish. By doing this, if someone were to ever look for information to use against you or to grab your dox, they end up on a wild goose chase where they’re looking for someone who doesn’t exist. Dirty SEO Tactics There are numerous ways to pollute a search engine’s results with “dirty pages”. Their page rank might not be all that existent, however they do tend to clutter around specific search terms like a username or a piece of common information laced into profiles or bios in order to throw someone off a trail. Now, to do this you need to have clean and organic looking back links. However one good way to populate an account with seemingly organic back links is to use one of the numerous “generators” that usually end up hurting your SEO in the long run. We don’t care about the long run, though. This is a short game tactic that translates into, in the long run, a small, albeit affective little trail duster meant to help cover some of your tracks. These three links are a good start; however there exist numerous “generators” that can be used. Using these three for all of your clone accounts should help you spark a little bit of a boost in their appearance on Google and Bing. With enough accounts under a similar or the same username, you can basically pollute the search results to help cover your main account with the clone accounts. https://www.freebacklinkbuilder.net/ https://sitowebinfo.com/back/ https://www.indexkings.com/ Ensure you read the PB’s “Internet Primer” to help you reduce Ads and pop-ups when using these websites. While not intentionally malicious, numerous sites, like these, can have malicious Ads or pop-ups. ================================================= Get a Friend Involved Let’s say you’ve a friend that you really trust and they’re interested in privacy and security just like you. Here’s a suggestion: Get them involved. Have your friend help you by using one of their own persona/clone accounts to accuse one of yours of being something that currently upsets the moral majority. From there, work in some fake dox and a handful of other pieces of information. Work those bits and pieces into a believable “dox” and have your clone/persona take it a bit too personally and start acting like you’re panicked. Delete the blog after a few days of the drama, let your friend’s persona/clone do some victory posting and move on. People will believe that that information belongs to you and follow that trail instead of looking for your real information. And, if you followed the PB’s namesake you should have very little information out there. You can even be lazy and just make your own callout blog to attack your own persona/clones. In the end, though, you just want to create enough tension and static to misdirect people. ================================================= Midwestern Theory The PB team had a guide for this one however you don’t need an entire guide for what can fit in a chapter. I won’t bore you with the excessive details but some time ago when Newgrounds was the in-thing, someone got upset at people for making the claim that there were a lot of Californians online. This led to the Midwestern netizen forced meme that quickly died out. The claim of being Midwestern is actually a good ploy when covering up your tracks. The Midwestern accent (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midwestern_accent) is easy to mimic and if you watch some Youtube videos (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DlxCDlIfh0), you should find yourself being able to pick it up and force it when need be. Ideally you should never let anyone see your face or hear your voice, yet it does come in handy just in case. Mix the various “Midwestern quirks” with setting all your accounts’ time zones to “Central” and keeping tabs of the time (https://www.worldtimezone.com/time/wtzresult.php?CiID=32119) (Always pick a random city or state in the Midwest) and mix in some research on “College towns” (https://www.collegeraptor.com/college-rankings/best-colleges-in-the-midwest/)… you should be able to spice up your bios and descriptions with something akin to a specific college team or name dropping a college or university that you go to and study at. So when you log off or leave your account, stating something like “OMFG! It’s 12:30 am! I have to go and sleep! I have a compsci class @ 9!” Keep this up with several accounts, adding in the oddball California town or Florida town, and you’ll have created enough static to keep people scoping out the wrong area for information. Though keep in mind that a lot of plant life in the Midwest tends to spread out into non-Midwestern areas. Take a picture or two of common plants around the US that appear in the Midwest, too. Figure out what’s a common park or nature preserve in the area of your false town/city and look at the common trees or plants in the area. Take a picture of something that is in your area that is in that area, too, and tag it with #Yellowstone park or whatever is popular in that area. And suddenly… you’re a Midwestern grilling in sub-zero temperatures because you want your burger. Don’t forget to show your almost zealous obsession and support for that area’s sports teams and no one is going to suspect a thing. Maybe spice in some local news from the area and make a comment on the weather (It isn’t that hard to look up a weather report through Google) and you’re good as Gold. You’re a real Midwesterner now, bro. ================================================= Be a Good Person, Share The PB team has in their namesake PDF a guide on opting out of Google maps, among others. Take the information for getting out of Google maps (and others) and make a flyer. Print it out, take it to Kinkos or some other print shop, or go to your local library and print some copies there. Make some wheat paste (shown below) and paste them all over your town (Put paste on wall and smooth, then put your poster up and slather on paste and smooth it on it too.). Soon a whole mess of people will be blurring out their houses on the online maps, and this in turn messes with the real estate sites to the point of anyone trying to look up your information finds a mass of blurred out houses. This causes a mix of the “Streisand effect” and reasonable deniability. WHEAT PASTE HOW-TO Flour (wheat works best) Sugar 1 Cup of Water Container with a lid • Boil a cup of water. • Put 3 tablespoons of flour into a bowl • Add 10 teaspoons of cool water until it forms a runny mix • Once the water has boiled, add the runny mix to the boiling water. Stir well! • Keep stirring. The mixture will foam up while it boils, so the constant stirring is essential to keep it from bubbling over and to keep it from getting chunky. • Keep the mixture boiling for 2 minutes. • Take the boiled mix off the heat. Add 2 tablespoons or more of sugar (added strength) • Let it cool. Pour into an appropriate container for carrying with you. It will keep well for about a week. • Learn more @ https://destructables.org/destructable/wheatpaste-recipe-putting-postersbillboard-alterations • Spray with a clear sealant or hairspray to help weatherize and make the poster last longer. Police, military members, and their families can opt-out of a wealth of databases. Some take it to the extreme and have their houses blurred out. If enough people in your area begin to blur out their houses and look into other means of removing their information, you’ll soon see a bit of a trend that can affect several blocks when it comes to viewing houses on any online map. This means that you can not only safely blur out yours but it’d be near impossible to guess whose house is whose. It’s only defeated if they have an address, and that’s if it’s actually your address to begin with. Let these people rant and rave as they knock or send a malicious package to the wrong house. If anything happens, since it broke into the realm of reality, they’ll end up being arrested and charged with several crimes. Fun fact: Not many places care about doxing, especially the police. Most modern “dox” is openly available information. This is why you must work toward suppressing it through opting out of websites and databases. If someone takes it from the internet to the realm of reality, lawsuits and arrests can happen. ================================================= Don’t Neglect Reality No one’s denying the PB’s effectiveness when it comes to lessening the overall data of yours online, however until they discuss ways to limit information bleeding offline you’ll need to take a few extra precautions outside of creating noise and lessening your data. They do have a PDF on how your privacy’s invaded, yet that only covers so much. Be a little bit nihilistic and apathetic. Don’t care as much and don’t react if you are doxed or some gets a bit too close. Ignore them; work on lessening your information. In the offline realm however you should work on creating some good for yourself. This means work on cleaning up your neighborhood, keeping your property clean and being nice to your neighbors. Look into doing some volunteering and charity work. Create some good will toward yourself and lessen the general impact in case anything comes toward you and your life. By doing this you can create a large support focus toward you and what good you’ve done. People will be in disbelief and outright call the claims made against you false. Ever wonder why politicians and famous people, even the internet famous, never get much crap and have an unusually large support behind them? What they do is quite simple: Act like a good person. With bit of charity under your belt and by observing social protocols enough by simply greeting people and saying your “Please” and “Thank yous” you’ll create an air of being someone half way decent. People will see this and any accusations made against you will result in either demand for blood or death of someone who dares attack you. Now you shouldn’t encourage the bloodlust or wanting of death, however simply using your time wisely and helping your community can act as a good cover. Someone comes around and harasses you; someone who might have power will come to your aide possibly. It also doesn’t hurt to remove your information and have it replace with falsified information. Checkout https://reddit.com/r/freebies and keep an eye out for free magazine subscriptions. Fill out a few, regardless what they are, with your home address and a burner cell’s number. The name can be made up, possibly made to match the cultural and ethnic makeup of your area. Think about it. What are the most common people in your immediate area? White? Black? Hispanic? It doesn’t matter as long as you pick the majority and follow suit with their name. It’ll help further push that static to help cover your tracks. So if you’ve a large number of Hispanic families in your area, using a Hispanic sounding first and last name on your free magazine subscriptions can help you replace all your removed database records with falsified ones. Go the extra step, load up on other freebies. Anything you don’t need or want can be donated to a number of homeless shelters or shelters for women and/or children. Gives you an extra push in being a good person too! ================================================= Afterword Outside of following the PB’s advice, using a VPN, a non-propriety OS and not touching social media there’s not much else you can do. While being deceptive and sprinkling lies and half truths into your conversations and online shenanigans helps, most of us who were born in the 80s and 90s have screwed up royally and will never trulybe un-doxable or secure. Work toward anonymity and spread the PB’s information to as many people as you can. I should note however that your text and how you type can give you away too. Look into using a text editor and use Basic English spelling and grammar. Mix in some chat speak and some texting quirks and you should be able to keep the personas even more separated and unique.

This is part of my series on Building a Sales and Marketing Machine. In this post I provide a case example to describe how one successful company built their Sales & Marketing machine.
JBoss was an Open Source company providing free middleware software to it’s customers. By the end of 2003, JBoss had been downloaded 5 million times, and the company was doing about $1m a year in revenues, selling training, documentation and consulting. Around that time, Bob Bickel joined the company, and initiated a process to raise venture capital. The raising of VC funds was a trigger that was needed to hire a professional management team, and to enter a new growth phase. Together with Bob, the company had figured out that once an application migrated from development to production, they could charge their customers for a subscription based initially around support, that should result in a better monetization than the other revenue streams.
I joined the board, and we immediately started working together as a team to build their sales and marketing machine. The photo below shows the two whiteboards after the first brainstorming session.
JBoss were extremely successful in building their sales and marketing machine, and went on to reach an annualized bookings run rate of about $65 million a year within two and a half years after starting the process. At that time they were acquired by Red Hat for $350 million plus an earnout of $70 million.
While I take a tiny amount of credit for introducing the methodology and helping to hire the management team, it should be made totally clear that the real credit belongs to the outstanding team who did the work to make this all happen. There were many players involved, but to give credit to some of the main people involved, I would like to highlight Marc Fleury, the founder and CEO; Sacha Labourey, co-founder and CTO; Bob Bickel, who brought professional business thinking and great management skills; Joe McGonnell who ran marketing; Rob Bearden, who ran sales; Brad Murdoch, who was responsible for the products and services that were used for monetization; Nathalie Fleury, responsible for PR, and working the blogosphere; Tom Leonard, head of business development; and Ben Sabrin. (My apologies for those left off this list. There were many other great individuals involved, and the full list would be very long.) They were not only great strategic thinkers, but they also executed flawlessly.
Starting the lead flow
The first question we looked at was: Did they know the names of the people that had downloaded their software 5 million times? The sad answer was no. Not only did SourceForge not allow them to collect names, but even if they did allow it, there was clear evidence that developers would simply not go through with the download if they were asked to provide their name.
Following one of the key principles of Building a Sales & Marketing Machine, we immediately realized that they needed to find a motivation to get the customers to provide the company with their contact information. The best motivation appeared to be the documentation, that they were currently selling. There was one big problem: selling the documentation was resulting in $27,000 per month in revenue, which was paying the rent and several peoples’ salaries. To me it was obvious that this was a small price to pay to get the names, but to the JBoss team, who had battled their way to get every dollar of revenue, that was less obvious. We debated this issue over the next three months, but finally they gave in and switched on the offer. It turned out to be a huge success: over 10,000 leads started pouring in every month. Over time this grew to 16,000 leads per month.
Dealing with an overflow of leads: Lead Scoring
Most companies suffer from not having enough leads. We had the opposite problem. As any salesperson will tell you, 10,000 leads is a huge problem. No one has the time to contact that number of people. – We needed an automated way to solve the problem.
Given my interest in marketing automation, I had recently taken a look at investing in Eloqua. (I had passed on the investment, for a very specific reason, but still really liked what they were doing.) JBoss took a look at Eloqua, and realized they could use the software to automate the first stage of the qualification process. They did this by tracking what each customer was doing on the web site, and how they were responding to email campaigns. Certain parts of the web site clearly indicated an interest in support, or other paid services, which were a good indicator of likelihood to purchase. When the customer looked at one of those pages, or viewed an email and clicked on the links, JBoss would mark that prospect as a qualified lead. (Eloqua dropped a cookie into the customer’s browser at the time of them registering their contact information, which made this tracking and scoring possible.) Since that time, several other players have emerged that can provide this exact same functionality that may be simpler to use and less expensive than Eloqua.
This resulted in a significant reduction in the leads. (Approx. 4:1 reduction, or a 25% conversion rate).
Later on the process, JBoss was able to look back at the customers who had actually bought the product and close the loop, by testing whether they had predicted the right events as qualification events. They did a lot of analysis to refine the events based on this information. Several of the original assumptions, based on common sense, turned out not to be true. For example, the amount of time that a lead spent on the website had little impact on their likelihood of becoming an opportunity or a closed deal. The same was true for time spent using the Wiki or the Forums.
From Joe McGonnell, VP of Marketing: “One of the other important benefits of Eloqua is that it provided us with a lot of valuable insight into what companies were using JBoss, even if we didn’t have qualified leads. It helped the inside sales team identify where to spend their time beyond just lead follow-up. For example, let’s say that we knew that we had 8 unique visitors from Hershey Foods during a given month. Even if none of these individuals had registered on our site or met the qualified lead pre-requisites, using common sense we could identify that they were probably working on a JBoss project. We also armed our sales team with contact discovery tools (e.g. One Source, Hoovers, Jigsaw) to then find the appropriate contacts to call into these accounts to find out if there was an opportunity brewing. Obviously inbound leads are more valuable, but this Eloqua data was very important as we scaled up the team and the number of leads per sales rep dropped.”
Further qualification needed: Telemarketing & BANT
Those leads still needed more work to make sure they were really a true “opportunity”. Sales got together with marketing and defined what they were looking for from a lead: did the buyer have the Budget, Authority, Need and Timeframe (sense of urgency to get something done in the near future) – often referred to as BANT.
This work was initially done by the inside sales group, but later was handed over to a lower cost telemarketing group. However the really well qualified leads were handed directly to inside sales.
This resulted in approximately a further 3:1 reduction in the leads (33% conversion rate).
Final stage selling: Inside Sales
JBoss then set about building an inside sales organization to close the qualified leads. The profile was people recently out of college with some sales experience and a lot of hunger. We discovered that an inside sales person could be fully productive in their 4th month, could generate revenues of about $140k per month. We also discovered that they needed about 4 opportunities for every one closed deal (25% conversion rate), and that the average selling price was $10,000.
With these conversion rates, and the average deal size, we had the numbers we needed to understand the complete model.
Handling the less qualified leads: Lead Nurturing
You might ask what happened to all the leads that weren’t qualified? Many of these were customers that had just downloaded the software for the first time, and still needed to develop their application before they would be ready to put it into production (when they would be most likely to purchase a support contract). These leads needed nurturing to keep them aware of JBoss’s service offerings. To do this, we constructed a series of campaigns using Eloqua, that sent them regular emails with a newsletter, invited them to various webinars, etc.
As they went through these stages, we would monitor their progress using the scoring techniques built into Eloqua to tell us if they visited the parts of website that indicated a likelihood to purchase. If they hit the appropriate score, they would immediately be thrown back into the telemarketing queue for direct contact and further qualification.
Blockage Points
Following the Building a Sales and Marketing Machine methodology, we set out to identify the blockage points in the sales process. It turns out there were two:
JBoss had gained its initial traction with developers who loved it’s much faster development cycle compared to competing products like BEA’s WebLogic, and IBM’s WebSphere. However there was a strong perception that when you went to put an application into production, JBoss wouldn’t scale, and didn’t have the reliability that these other products had, and you couldn’t get an appropriate level of support needed to run mission critical applications.Since we got most of our monetization from customers putting JBoss into production, this was a very big problem that we had to address head on. One part of this was putting the appropriate features into the product to address scalability and fault tolerance. The other part was creating the appropriate support offerings.
Although customers were very aware of the JBoss brand name, and free software, they were not aware that there was also a company of the same name, that could provide them with the appropriate level of support that they needed to feel comfortable to run mission critical applications on the product.
Blockage Points Diagram
Using the methodology, we worked to understand the customers’ mindset and motivations at these key steps in the sales cycle, and looked at the tools available to motivate them to do what we wanted.

Next focus: Growth
Now that we understood the model, we could focus on what levers we could pull to optimize the model and create growth. The team soon realized that if they could keep the conversion rates the same, but increase the average selling price, they would have a great lever to create growth.
The Subscription
To do that they introduced the concept of a Subscription. What is a subscription, you might ask. The answer, in JBoss’s case, was that it represented a very powerful marketing concept where they packaged together a series of different services, and charged the customer a recurring fee. The trick was to group several things together, and not allow the customer to unbundle the package and examine the value for each individual component.
Monetizing free software turns out to be hard. The customer already has the software, and has no need to pay you. So you have to find associated “things” that they will value, and persuade them to pay for them. Support turned out to be great for a while, but the problem was that the product was so good that at the end of the first year, the customer would look back and see that they had made only two calls, and paid $40k for that. JBoss needed something more. The subscription was the solution, but even the subscription would need something very substantial to make it appealing. Enter the JBoss Operations Network…
JBoss Operations Network
JBoss was not the first Open Source company to figure out how to monetize free software. There was a very successful predecessor: Red Hat. Red Hat had created a subscription, and most importantly had invented something called Red Hat Network as a powerful value added capability. Red Hat Network was essentially proprietary software, delivered as SaaS (Software as a Service) to help their customers manage their many Red Had instances.
JBoss realized they needed something similar. The opportunity lay in the fact that JBoss’s application server shipped with very rudimentary operational management tools. So they set out to create the JBoss Operations Network, which was management software to provide visual management and monitoring for multiple JBoss application servers, and delivered to the customer as a SaaS service.
Bundling this into the Subscription provided the key value element that allowed JBoss to raise prices.
Scalable pricing: The Pricing Matrix
Another major problem the team faced: JBoss was selling to some very large customers, who kept telling us that our prices were too cheap. Our pricing was very simple, and did not scale in any way to capture the full amount that they were willing to pay.
The team set out to create a scalable pricing matrix. To do this, they created multiple dimensions that would scale pricing: different JBoss products covered (we kept expanding the product line), number of servers, number of locations, number of named support people, etc.
The final result: ASP goes from $10k to $50k
The final result of all these initiatives: JBoss was able to move the average selling price (ASP) from $10k to $50k, while still maintaining the same conversion rates as before. This was key to the extremely rapid growth that got the company from a $2m run rate to a $65m run rate in just two and half years.
JBoss: a classic illustration of the Power of Free
JBoss is a great example of the the Power of Free. It perfectly illustrates several important principles of the model:
By giving away a really great product for free, JBoss developed a loyal following and active community that virally spread the word to other developers.
This led to an incredible adoption of the product, which could be converted into leads that flowed in at a rate that was many times higher than that experienced by most traditional software companies.
JBoss realized that they would never monetize their entire user base. When we reached the $65m run rate level, we calculated that we had only monetized about 3% of the customer base. However that 3% represented a very attractive, and fast growing recurring revenue stream, that was worth a lot of money to several acquirers that bid on the company at the same time as Red Hat.
One of the key points to understand about this model: instead of building a very expensive marketing process like their competitors BEA and IBM, JBoss used their R&D resources to build a free product that achieved the same goal: widespread product awareness, and high customer demand – all for zero marketing costs.
