Yass ok I'm going to do a few headcanons since I don't want to give too much away but:

Ok so the Farwynds are a real house within the asoif lore, but they're barely ever mentioned except for in like one book and the appendix in the others. What we know about them is that their seat is the Lonely Light, they are bannermen to House Greyjoy, they live on an island that's like 9 ish days away from Pyke, and their sigil is a black boat on some black water with an orange sky and red sun behind it.

We also know that the current family that is mentioned in the books consists of Gylbert, which is the Lord of the Lonely Light, and his three sons, Gyles, Ygon, and Yohn. For some reason I imagine Ygon and Yohn to be twins just cus of their names, but that's never specified. Aurelia would b the youngest daughter. She never really knew her mother growing up, but her father always told her that he caught her out of the sea with a net and that after Aurelia was born her mother thought she was ugly and threw herself back into the sea.

Her childhood was probably very lonely, because her island was so isolated. I have a headcanon that they do not even have fresh fruit on the island, since the iron places are like kinda barren I think?? So when she gets to Winterfell she like eats all the fruit-her favorite are raspberries. Also, growing up with her brothers, I think she's very much a tomboy at first. Eventually she gets comfortable with her femininity and she's never been the not like other girls type, but she's just a tomboy at first. Also, her brothers taught her how to use weapons and such, which makes her a pretty good fighter. She was closest to her oldest brother Gyles. The twins probably bullied and teased her you know how brothers are. Tbh. I see her as a book Ginny Weasley type.

She's probably very fiery during her young childhood, but also she really wants a friend who's a girl. She doesn't get one until Sam brings Gilly to the Wall. Please. Someone save her.

When she was of age to be married off, no one really wanted to come marry her. Because um. They thought the whole island was crazy. They were kind of right. They're definitely doing some weird shit there.

She was always drawn to the sea, but she was never allowed in it as a kid. So while her brothers played in it, she would walk along the shore and collect sea shells to bring back to her father. As well as being like this sassy little kid, she can also be very sweet obviously. Her father is a little odd so she takes care of him a lot of the times.

She was married once before Jon, and then he dies. She is also a bisexual icon and has a little fling with a woman at some point, but that's quickly put to an end which is unfortunate. Anyways. Her husband was probably one of her father's men, meaning she just didn't leave her island either.

Once she gets off her little island, she vows never to go back. At this point she has completely fallen out with the people there as well as her father and brothers. She has dreams about going to the Wall for some reason, so she swims North, with her mother helping her through the sea. I imagine her mother has something to do with the sea, more on this later.

When she gets to Mole's Town, she's not really sure how to get past the gates of the Wall because like men are only allowed there. She was going to work as a whore but then she was brought in by a little old woman she helped on the side of the road. Then yk the wildlings come over. And she has to go to the Wall dragging Olly.

It just really fucking gets to the core of the problem (women must parent the men, the men get to be carefree but the woman takes on all responsibility but man isn’t it annoying how lecturing these women get about doing work?) and like. Thank you so, so much! My f/f stuff kind of sits close to my heart in a special way- obviously, all my writing is close to my heart, but the f/f stuff just resonates with my own life and experience a bit more. Writing straight romance is super fun because it's an opportunity to explore characters as characters, a bit more divorced from me, but the gay stuff always feels like tapping little 16-year-old Rum on the shoulder and going 'you'll be fine, you darling little idiot'. Oooooh, my favourite sapphic stuff! Let me get the recommendation bag out, lol. With the usual disclaimer that I don't know everything, have read too little, and am limited by my own experience.

First off, fanfic, because that's how we all got here. There's this one story called Skirt Full of Thorns by montparnasse that I think I first read in....2021? And I love it. I was one of those lesbians who clung to the idea of being bisexual for a long-ass time and against all reason (I was out there dating women and loving it, and dating men and feeling very 'meh' about it, and still didn't realise what that might mean until I was....21?) and this story just captures something about that idea of NOT figuring it out at 15 or 16, about the feelings that come with that. It's also political without being paternalistic, which is something I appreciate SO much in queer fiction. At least for me, queerness was never just about 'I'm into women', there is an entire worldview and way of moving through the world attached to it, a deconstruction of what it means to be female, and I always love it when stories reflect that without beating it into your head with a sledgehammer.

Then, essays! I'm currently reading The Rib Joint by Julia Koets, which is an entire essay collection, lol. I'm not fully done with it, so I can't vouch for the quality of the last bit, but what I've read so far is BEAUTIFUL. It's very haunting and has that Southern Gothic feel to it, and a very lyrical kind of prose. In other published fiction, Orlando by Virginia Woolf did something to my soul when I first read it as a pretentious little teenage twat, but it's...ya know. It's Woolf. It's not a beach read.

I'm not a podcast girlie, I'm afraid, but I AM a standup comedy girlie! If that's your vibe, PLEASE try 'Nanette' by Hannah Gadsby, and anything by Mae Martin. Also, show-wise, I really liked 'Feel Good' by Mae Martin, too.

Sorry if this is getting long, but I wish you the best of luck in your exploration process. If there's one bit of advice I would have liked to have heard back in my 'ohmyfuckinggod, seriously????'-stage, it's this: it's truly all less spectacular and important than you think, but also somehow deeper and more transformative than you'd initially assume. Kissing is kissing and dating is dating and sex is sex, and it's all just bodies in the end. At the same time, the things about queerness that go beyond the simple physicality of 'I have sex with women' go DEEP into your worldview and psyche, and those things are the ones that really shape you after a while. It's not just something you are, it is, to a certain extent, something you DO - a way of interacting with yourself and the world. My best advice really is to kinda....consider the geometry of your soul, in a way? Like, where does it jive, where can it catch onto something? And just try things. In the end, we all can only try.

Nothing wrong with self-inserting for a ship (harmless activity in the long run) but also I think this fandom would be more normal if we realized every ship is so thinly drawn that it’s just us taking whatever dynamic appeals to us and molding it however we want. Which is very fun! That’s the appeal of shipping in the first place. I actally think ASOIAF in general is the perfect fandom for shippers, because there’s a case to be made for literally everything, and usually enough of a base that you can play around and do what you want.

if we are to be honest, ship wars have probably existed since the dawn of fandom and will probably never disappear as a phenomenon. there's always going to be some peevish troublemaker somewhere with no manners making sport of other people's harmless pasttime. i keep giving harry potter examples bc, as a millennial, it was the first fandom i interacted with, but, even then, people were clawing each other's eyes out over harry/hermione and harry/ginny (harmony vs chocolateers or whatever the hell they were calling themselves lmao). anyway, it was as pointless then as it is now, but, when you're young, at least you can say it had its entertainment value for a while.

that being said, if you're over 13 years old and have been in fandoms for more than a hot minute, you should have accumulated enough wisdom to recognize & accept that people have shipped and will be shipping all sorts of wacky combinations anytime anywhere. so just be sensible about it. there's no need to like every ship just as equally there's no need to be personally offended when someone doesn't share the same tastes as you.

at the same time, it's one thing to be venting on your own blog about it and another to be going into other inboxes and excoriate it. 😆 obviously, things are not black and white, like, you can have a civil discussion with someone even if you disagree and i'm NOT saying that this was the case with the previous anon either. at the end of the day, no blood was shed and no harm done. but, in the context of a lot of ink being spilled on the topic already, knocking on someone else's door and saying "i don't like this thing you like because of random reasons" is a litlle "???". i mean, ok? what do you want me to say? 😭 write a whole-ass essay to convince you of the opposite? 🧍‍♀️ <small> i realise this is what i ended up doing anyway but, as the old adage goes, do as i say, not as i do!!! </small>

even with the self-insert topic, not everyone has to like it! it's fine! there should be space to recognise that a lot of them can be silly and kind of cringe and not everyone is the intended audience for that. it's not harmful or wrong (on the contrary), but it also can just not tickle someone's fancy. the solution is very simple: the back button on your browser. but it's a very blanket statement for disliking a ship bc, as we've already discussed, it's too widespread of a theme to be specific to any one pairing. so, if it applies to everyone, then it applies to no one, and what are we even doing here talking about it then.

now, when it comes to helaemond, i'm a bit flabbergasted by this critique, as a matter of fact. she IS a pretty under-developed character, in the sense that she receives little screen time and we are told rather than shown what she's like. but show!helaena has received some pretty distinctive traits like the gift of prophecy and an insect hobby. idk but it doesn't sound like a blank slate over which shippers can so easily project their own personality. do detractors really think this site is crawling (lol) with people fascinated by many-legged creatures? or who are uniquely melancholic because they are tortured by visions beyond their understanding? a bunch of entomologist cassandras just hanging out on this hellsite? i realise that this specific userbase holds many neurodivergent fans, but, it still seems to me that many critics haven't even read much helaemond fic, bc helaena is not exactly depicted as the girl next door. maybe i'm biased here but, at least with luke, i can see it more because he does kind of have an everyman vibe. 🤷‍♀️

Dumbledore on how old age should recall youth while the opposite isn’t possible, and how that’s part of wisdom—all adults should know that
