will the canucks ever end this spiral, or is the season over? a history lesson:
right now the vancouver canucks are…bad. they keep losing and they keep discovering new, worse ways to lose. it’s like they have a humiliation kink at this point. some people want the core blown up, some think quinn will refuse to re-sign in 2 years, some are convinced that tocchet is the root of our issues and he needs to be fired. team petey and team miller shirts would probably sell out faster than a rogers arena home game. they just lost consecutive games 6-1 and 5-1, in both of which they gave up 3 goals in the first period. neither of our two best forwards are even on pace to get a point per game this season, our goalie is one of the best in the world but has only played 8 games so far and is still trying to work his way back up to be the vezina-calibre performer he can be, we aren’t even in a wild card spot right now. quinn’s trying his best but even he’s only got 1.5 hands.
could things get any worse? well, yes, of course, it’s the canucks. but could they get better? also yes! let’s take a look at a spiral of canucks’ past.
on february 3, 2009, the canucks had lost 8 games in a row. they’d lost 9 home games in a row — they hadn’t won a game on home ice in over a month (dec 28, 2008, was the last). morale was low. fans were worried. would the team make the playoffs? they weren’t sitting in a playoff spot at that moment. in that stretch they lost games 6-4, 4-1, 5-3, 2-1, you name it. 3 of their last 4 had been OT losses (sound familiar?).
then, carolina came to vancouver. the canucks got a 2-goal lead — they gave up the 2-goal lead. with about a minute and a half left, in a tied game, the canucks took a penalty. they’d already given up multiple power play goals in this game, and it pretty much felt over. people pencilled in a 10th-straight home loss as despair settled back in over vancouver.
but what happened? alex burrows, perhaps best known for slaying the dragon in 2011, scored a shorthanded goal to win the game.
the two points that they collected pushed them back into a playoff spot. this was the start of a 4-game winning streak, and including this game they won 8 of their next 9. they finished the final stretch of the season 23-7-2 for an overall record of 45-27-10, and 100 points.
they swept the blues 4-0 in round 1 of the playoffs that year. they did lose to chicago in the next round, which tended to happen a lot back then. they also lost to chicago in the playoffs the next year (notable: they made the playoffs! both years!). but the year after that?
it’s the 2011 playoffs. round 1, game 7. the canucks had a 3-0 series lead that they’d given up. they’d been eliminated from the playoffs by chicago 2 seasons in a row — the team had the pieces, but they couldn’t get past the god damn blackhawks. the game went to overtime, and it almost ended with an incredible chance for chicago — luckily, luongo did Luongo Things. then, none other than our hero alex burrows got a breakaway, scored a goal, and he won the game. he slayed the dragon. and we all know what happened after that *drops mic* (the mic drop would feel better if the canucks had won the cup that year but let’s not get too crazy — it is the canucks, after all).

hello party people! the stanley cup playoffs start right now, so in an attempt to tempt y’all to watch, i have compiled a list of playoff moments that altered my brain chemistry (as someone who has watched the playoffs every year since 2010)! even if you don’t want to watch hockey, the sport is pretty ridiculous so here is just a small sample of the extent of the craziness!
washington capitals vs. pittsburgh penguins 2009 (round 2 game 2): hockey’s messi and ronaldo, sidney crosby and alex ovechkin put on a show for the washington crowd as they each score hattys in the same game. the capitals would go on to win the game, but the penguins would win the series (and later the cup), but this game has some of the best highlights as the two best players in hockey at their peaks showed off their skills for sexy, sexy hockey!
chicago blackhawks vs. philadelphia flyers 2010 (round 4 game 6): in overtime of game 6 of the stanley cup finals, a chicago player scored the game winner to win the hawks the cup. the weird part? nobody saw it go in except the player and his teammates. the crowd, flyers, and broadcasters didn’t see it go in. known as the “phantom goal” this goal won the hawks their first cup in almost 50 years.
vancouver canucks vs. chicago blackhawks 2011 (round 1 game 7): this is the game that made me fall in love with hockey. little 7-year-old me was glued to my television screen all night watching this game. the blackhawks and canucks had matched up in the playoffs for three years in a row, and the blackhawks (at the time the reigning cup champions) had beat the canucks every time. this series had gone the full 7 games, with the canucks winning the first 3 and the blackhawks coming from behind to win the next 3. earlier in game 7, hero alex burrows had opened the scoring then missed a penalty shot. with the game tied at 1, just over 5 minutes into overtime, burrows gets the puck and scores, defeating the blackhawks to send the canucks to the next round. they would go on to lose the cup in the final, but this was the golden generation of canucks games and the vibe in vancouver? unmatched. it gave birth to two of the most iconic radio calls: “they slayed the dragon” by john shorthouse, and “its a wonderful day for an exorcism” from jim hughston. this defined my childhood fr
boston bruins vs. toronto maple leafs 2013 (round 1 game 7): mere weeks after the tragedy at the boston marathon, the bruins were down 4-1 with just over 14 minutes to play in the 3rd period. they were down 4-2 with 9 minutes left. with two goals in 30 seconds, with less than 90 seconds remaining, the bruins tied the game and patrice bergeron won the game for the bruins in overtime. the maple leafs, having blown a 3 goal lead, ended their season. as of right now, they have not won a round of the playoffs since 2004.
tampa bay lightning vs. boston bruins 2018 (round 2 game 4): the playoffs can get quite scrappy! in order to get an advantage over his opponent after a little scrum, noted league rat brad marchand licked a man. yes fully licked. previously in the playoffs he had kissed and licked another man, and this caused the league to outlaw licking. the bruins would go on to lose the series, even though marchand continued his ridiculous antics
vegas golden knights vs. vancouver canucks 2020 (round 2 games 5-7): in 2020, the playoffs were played in a bubble at one arena with no spectators. after game 4, that the knights won, it was discovered that the canucks goalie jacob markstrom had an injury. with the knights leading the series 3-1, the canucks needed to win 3 games in a row to move on to the next round. enter thatcher demko, a rookie goalie who had never played a playoff game before. over games 5, 6 and 7, demko made 123 saves, including a 48 save shutout in game 6, to keep the canucks in until game 7. he stood on his head, he was incredible, and he went over 100 minutes without the knights scoring a goal. unfortunately, with a knights shutout in game 7, the canucks wouldn’t move on, but “bubble demko” would live in infamy as thatcher demko’s intro to playoff hockey. hes my favourite goalie
pittsburgh penguins vs. new york rangers 2022 (round 1 game 1): as both teams were ready to fight it out in the playoffs, this game was tied at the end of three periods. in the playoffs, overtime lasts 20 minutes with 15 minute breaks between them. in the 3rd period of overtime, and the 6th period of hockey evgeni malkin scored for the penguins after over 90 minutes of hockey. it was midnight at madison square garden. the rangers goalie, igor shesterkin, made 79 saves in the loss, and the penguins goalie louis domingue, who came on in the second overtime to replace an injured casey desmith, went viral for reports that he ate spicy pork and broccoli between periods to keep up his energy. this is one of the longest games in nhl history, and the rangers would go on to win the series in 7 games.
edmonton oilers vs. calgary flames 2022 (round 2 game 1): the battle of alberta is one of the classic rivalries of the nhl, and the first game of last year’s round 2 delivered. the goalies seemed to be unable to keep the puck out of the net, and flames and oilers fans both watched as the two teams combined for 15 goals, with the flames winning 9-6. the oilers would go on to win the series, but the sloppy, goal-heavy hockey has stuck in my mind ever since last may
these are some of my highlights! i hope you all enjoy the playoffs (because i know i will), and all the beard-growing and towel-twirling that comes along with them. happy stanley cup season everyone!
#k talks hockey#k the hockey prof???#stanley cup playoffs#k converts her footie friends to hockey friends!#the ridiculous shenanigans of nhl playoff hockey#happy hockey hunger games besties!#k talks stanley cup playoffs

BC native Kristin Carter has had a busy and productive run over the last couple of years, and what’s happening right now is maybe the wildest piece of it to date.
The two-time semi-finalist in the Top of the Country contest, Carter has recently released her debut single (and video) with SteelHead Music, Karma as well as a cover of Blake Shelton’s massive hit God’s Country to the excitement and appreciation of Canadian country music fans. As an emerging artist, the importance of this kind of success and exposure cannot be understated, and it is fantastic to see it coming for Kristin Carter.
We had the chance to catch up with Kristin by email to ask a few questions and to play a round of 5 Quick Questions and we’d like to thank her for sending over some awesome answers and playing along. Check out both parts of the Q&A, hit play on the videos for Karma and God’s Country, and stay tuned for more from Kristin Carter – because it’s coming!

Kristin Carter Q&A
Q. Your debut single, Karma and your cover of Blake Shelton’s God’s Country have both caught the attention of country music fans. Have you had a chance to take that in and enjoy it?
KC. It’s been super hectic since the songs got released! Releasing your first songs to the world is nerve racking but I try to remind myself to soak it all in, I’m really grateful for the response to the music and the support people have been giving me so far.
Q. You’ve got a great team at SteelHead that is known for embracing new artists. What has the experience been like working with Dallas Smith, and having Shawn Austin as a labelmate?
KC. My team is AMAZING. I’m so grateful for all that they do for me. I’m a die hard Dallas fan and have been for years, so to have someone that you idolize be championing you and investing their time in your career is pretty indescribable. I’m glad they took a chance on me, and I just hope I’m making them proud in return!
I’ve been friends with Shawn for a few years, we met performing around Vancouver. His growth as an artist has been great to watch, and I think I have to give him credit for getting my teams attention. Dallas first reached out after I posted a duet on Instagram with Shawn, so thanks bud!

Q. Canadian Country Music Week is always exciting, and this year in Calgary you were busy – do you have any highlights that you can share?
KC. The “Blue Jay Cafe” sticks out in my mind because it was such an intimate setting and a very unique opportunity to showcase my music. You’re right up close with all the audience, so you could see how they were soaking it all in and appreciating it so much. Plus, all my Calgary friends came out to that one, so it was great to see them. Also, Bamford Bash was a blast (say that 3 times fast), and being part of the CCMA official songwriters round are things I will never forget.
Q. You’re in a unique spot as the only artist to be part of both the 2018 and 2019 Top of the Country contest. How did those experiences help you move forward in your career?
KC. That contest was integral to my career growth. It was my first taste of national exposure and it really put me on the map in Canada, so to have that happen twice is pretty amazing and I feel very lucky to have their support two years in a row. It also allowed me to record at The Warehouse Studio twice. It’s such an iconic studio in Vancouver, it helped me look cool at family gatherings for a while!

Q. We know that you’ve got love for and have been influenced by Shania and Beyonce – so here are a couple tough questions…
KC. Love is an understatement… but I’ll let one that slide haha
A) Which Shania song do you think Beyonce should cover?
KC. You’re Still The One – Bey has the range to SMASH this ballad. I’ll be dreaming about this later
B) Which Beyonce song do you think Shania should cover?
KC. Daddy Lessons – A lesser known song, but it has a country sound so I think Shania would slay that.
Q. You’re going to be at The Commodore with Tebey on The Good Ones Tour to kick off 2020, is there anything else you can tell us about what’s coming for you in the new year?
KC. Yes!! So exciting. The Commodore is such a storied venue in Van, I can’t wait to rock that stage and open up for Tebey. I’ll have to make a “denim on denim” outfit in his honour to thank him for the opportunity.
We have lots of new and exciting music coming down the pipeline, so stay tuned! I can’t wait to share it.

5 Quick Questions with Kristin Carter
Q1. If you are on a long drive and can only choose 1 album to listen to, which album would you reach for?
KC. Shania Twain: Come On Over. I know all the words, so I can keep singing for a long enough time to get to the destination.
Q2. Do you have a dream venue that you would love to play live?
KC. Rogers Arena! I would love to fill that for a home town show and be an unofficial Canuck for the night.
Q3. Who would you choose as your dream collaboration partner for a future project?
KC. Caitlyn Smith. Such an incredible singer and performer. I’d love to work with her.
Q4. What was the first album that you ever bought for yourself (CD, Tape, LP, etc.)?
KC. I can’t remember the first one I bought but the first one I had was Ricky Martin. It was because it had Livin’ La Vida Loca on it, and was a Christmas gift from my mom haha
Q5. Is there an artist that you love that you think more people should be paying attention to and listening to?
KC. Mariya Stokes from Calgary. She has a really unique vibe, and is a great singer. Check her out!

Ramblings: Thoughts on Playoffs, Coach Brind’Amour, Thornton (May 9)
Thoughts on Playoffs, Coach Brind’Amour, Thornton, and more…
We get a Game 7 in the second round, and it’s from the series that features the regular season’s top two teams.
So who do you like? As I’ve mentioned before, it depends on what kind of game it is. If Winnipeg can go on another three-goal rapid fire run, then I think they’ve got this one in the bag. The Predators simply don’t have the offensive explosiveness of the Jets. But if Nashville can slow it down to a tight-checking defensive chess match, then I am convinced they will get it done in front of the home fans.
My Game 7 prediction: I picked Nashville in 7, so I have to stay with that pick. In terms of the future, though, Winnipeg is set up very nicely and has shown in this series that they are good enough to be the dominant team in the Central next season and possibly beyond. They’ve got a top-6 forward unit that might be second to none, they’ve got Connor Hellebuyck about to hit his prime, and they didn’t get heavily involved in free agency while the rebuild was carried forward from Atlanta (more on free agency later).
Much has been made about Pekka Rinne’s struggles during the playoffs. But one positive about his playoff performance: he bounces back. Since last season he is 10-2 with a sub-1.50 GAA and plus-.950 SV% with two shutouts after being tagged with an L in the previous game.
Nashville is not the best option for high-end scoring in playoff pools. After all, only one Predator (Filip Forsberg) was in the top 10 in playoff scoring last season, even though they made it to the final. There were even two players who were knocked out the round before (Erik Karlsson, Ryan Getzlaf) who finished ahead of Forsberg in scoring. But if you’re in a deep playoff pool that goes 3-4 lines deep or allows substitutions, pick lots of Nashville players. Their scoring is more spread out than that of other teams.
Just when I mentioned Roman Josi was struggling, he records two helpers in Game 6. No such luck for Kyle Turris, who has come up small during the playoffs. He has yet to score a postseason goal and has been held without a point over his last four games.
*
Well, the Capitals finally slayed their dragon… or exorcised their demon… or whatever you want to call it. The Capitals/Penguins rivalry reminds me a bit of the Canucks/Blackhawks rivalry from 2009 to 2011. The Blackhawks knocked the Canucks out in the second round in both 2009 and 2010, then the Canucks needed Game 7 overtime to finally vanquish the Blackhawks. As much of a sour taste that the Canucks were left with in that Stanley Cup Final against Boston, imagine, Canucks fans, if their season ended in that 2011 first-round series with Chicago.
Even if the Capitals are swept by Tampa Bay in the conference final, I think they have to be satisfied with their season just for finally getting past Pittsburgh. No more talk about whether Alex Ovechkin is traded, which is absurd if you consider his actual lifetime postseason stats. Barry Trotz gets to keep his job for at least one more season, which is also absurd if you consider how many games he’s coached. But if I’m a Capitals’ fan, I’d be a bit worried about a possible letdown after that series win. Plus Tampa has only lost twice during the postseason. I still like the Bolts as my Stanley Cup winner – even more so than before.
As for the Penguins, they still have to be in the mix for teams that can win the Stanley Cup in 2018-19. Two consecutive seasons of going the distance should have taken a toll on a team that has already had more than its share of injuries to star players. Just keep in mind that their entire first-unit power play (Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Phil Kessel, Patric Hornqvist, and Kris Letang) is now all over the age of 30. Time sure flies. Something to think about for your fantasy team as well.
*
The most significant news story of the day involved the Hurricanes naming Rod Brind’Amour the new head coach and Don Waddell the new general manager. Mike Clifford covered the Fantasy Take on the Carolina moves earlier today.
I remember Brind’Amour bringing somewhat surprising fantasy value very late in his career, particularly as a faceoff specialist. As an assistant coach, Brind’Amour must have had at least some influence in the Hurricanes’ top-ranked faceoff percentage last season (54.1%). All of Jordan Staal, Derek Ryan, Elias Lindholm, Victor Rask, and Marcus Kruger all had a faceoff success rate of at least 54.5%. Staal was the most effective of the group with a 56.6% faceoff success rate and as a top-15 league option in faceoffs won (757). This strong faceoff success rate seemed to be a factor in the Canes’ strong advanced stats.
If new owner Tom Dundon wants to know why his team is not championship caliber, perhaps he should consider his team’s lack of a true number one scoring center. We know what we’re going to get out of Staal as a second or third-line option, but what about Lindholm or Rask? Will Martin Necas one day have what it takes to be a first-line center? Will Waddell have to make a blockbuster trade for a center, which would no doubt be pushed by the owner? As Mike said, it will be up to Brind’Amour to get the most out of Lindholm and Rask in particular. Next season will be telling in terms of what we should expect from them going forward.
*
Now that the Sharks have been eliminated, we have found out exactly what caused Joe Thornton to miss the last 2+ months of the regular season. Even though Thornton’s production wasn’t bad when he was healthy (36 points in 47 games), he has to be considered a significant injury risk going forward after tearing ligaments in both knees.
Is it possible that Thornton slowed linemate Joe Pavelski while he was in the lineup?
Pavelski until January 23 (Thornton’s last game): 34 points in 47 games (0.72 PTS/GP)
Pavelski after January 23 (Thornton out for the season): 32 points in 35 games (0.91 PTS/GP)
This mattered for Pavelski owners because they drafted him expecting the post-Thornton points-per-game numbers. But prior to Thornton’s injury, Pavelski was on pace for 59 points.
As much as Thornton says he wants to be back with the Sharks and is willing to take a pay cut to be back, there’s always the possibility that he could be playing for a different team next season (some possibilities here). Or not at all if the knees don’t hold up. And as nice as it would be to see Thornton return for one more season in teal, him not returning might actually make sense for the Sharks.

Some other injury news to keep in the ol’ memory bank: Cory Schneider is likely to miss training camp after having hip surgery. Recovery times aren’t set in stone, so Schneider’s five-month recovery time could change. But it’s also possible that we could see more of Keith Kinkaid to start the season.

If you need any convincing why it’s not a good idea to spend like crazy on free agency, take a peek at the 2016 free agent signings. Here are your signings that were worth at least $18 million total and involved a player switching teams. Tell me if you think any of these players significantly improved their teams.
Kyle Okposo
Troy Brouwer
David Backes
Milan Lucic
Frans Nielsen
Loui Eriksson
Andrew Ladd
Only one of these players (Backes) played for a playoff team, and he’s already one of the most searched buyouts on Cap Friendly. The best signing that offseason – by far – was Eric Staal signing with the Wild for three years at $10.5 million. Those are the kind of contracts that teams need to sign.
I’ll agree with Dobber’s take on free agency except for one minor point: It’ll take just two years, not three, before fans will be searching for buyouts on many of these players.
What I’ve learned from this that I can apply to fantasy: If you play in an auction league, avoid bidding wars unless you have money to burn. It’s probably not the end of the world to have a bad contract or two on your team, but aim to have as many great value contracts as you possibly can.
In a salary cap league, the perfect time to bail on many of these players would have been right after they signed those contracts. Something to consider for the upcoming group of UFAs. Just because NHL teams sign them for big money doesn’t mean you have to.
