Your post about your Damerey origins got me curious... I've never gotten into x-files fics, but I did watch the show in reruns and there was just... no one cooler than Dana Scully (except Batman, but like... he was fictional and Dana seemed like a real person to me b/c my delusions started early in my life).

I've really been mulling over a re-watch. I'm a completist and would have no choice but to watch it top to bottom, movies and all.

Buuuuut.... do you have any favorite season arcs or episodes?????

Wow, this question really made me think. Honestly, this show was so much a part of me for so many years, it's hard to imagine that I haven't watched a single episode in years! Coming here to Tumblr and connecting with people who are current fans has helped my inner Phile reemerge, and I too crave a re-watch. And like you, I'd have to start from the beginning.

I can't say I have a favorite arc. Obviously the Cancer arc was the most important, but as a whole I've just always considered the series as one story (kind of like Star Wars; it's hard for me to watch just one movie, I have to watch them all). I can point out episodes I love from every season, although I will admit Season 6 is probably my overall favorite, hopeless romantic that I am.

I absolutely adore the first movie, Fight the Future, and can watch that over and over and over. I saw it in theaters 5 times, which tied a record for me that wasn't broken until The Force Awakens came out.

Other eps I know by heart include: Ice, Irresistible, War of the Coprophages, Grotesque, Paper Hearts, Small Potatoes, Bad Blood, Folie a Deux, Monday, The Unnatural, En Ami, Je Souhaite, This is Not Happening/Deadalive, Audrey Pauley, and Improbable. I enjoyed parts of the revival, but not enough to really get into it, and I was not happy with what they did to William, so I have trouble accepting Seasons 10 and 11 as canon. I loved seeing David and Gillian together again, but I wish they had stayed with Monster of the Week episodes instead of making the Conspiracy even more confusing and unbelievable than it already was. Also hate what they did to Monica and Skinner. So, yeah...

Anyway, this show truly changed my life. It gave me the best friends in the world, as we met on-line over 20 years ago and are still friends to this day. Here we are through the years; the first one we are on the Queen Mary, where they filmed Triangle, back in 2007. The last was my 50th birthday last year at Galaxy's Edge.

And of course, it's what first got me started in fanfiction.

OK SO this is fairly new to me but I will *try* to explain my current obsession with them shsjsbsjsk

basically I think the short answer is that they're just a really cute, healthy relationship? whether it's platonic or not, that remains true. and of course I like something like that, especially since it's kinda the "friends to lovers" trope.

the thing is that their relationship kinda fits that post you made, about characters who know each other from before the narrative begins and who are, in a lot of ways, a package deal throughout — Doggett is around for half a season before Monica shows up, but it's actually him who brings her in to help; they'd worked on a case years before (something... very personal to him, as a matter of fact) and it's implied that they're pretty close friends before we even ever see them interact. Monica doesn't live or work in the same area as the rest of the main gang at first but once she does get reassigned and joins everyone else, they're practically inseparable.

PLUS they just generally have a really healthy seeming relationship bc they're very open and don't have the kind of tension MSR sometimes do lol. openness and honesty make all the difference tbh, not everything has to be super complicated 😂

(i say that with all the love in my heart for Mulder and Scully; they have their problems but they're SUCH a good pairing and I find their Issues(TM) really interesting bc it gives so much insight into them, ya know? and for the most part, stuff does end up getting worked out between them — just something simpler is kinda refreshing at times lol. MSR is still THEE ship tho)

also lol it's literally canon that they're in love, idk if anything ever comes of it tbh but it is VERY VERY clear even before anything is ever said about it. absolutely unhinged shippy behavior.

4-D... like... ALL of 4-D... I was totally ready for them to be platonic besties but when I watched that episode I was like. oh my gosh. they're friends to lovers. he came over to help her move in. HER WIPING THE CORNER OF HIS MOUTH. the way she goes absolutely INSANE about him being hurt. "you hired cheap help". the hecking- the score in that scene toward the end??? THE HUG AND HOW CONCERNED JOHN IS. I cannot.

Audrey Pauley. need I say more?? I made a post saying this already, but NOBODY but TXF could make telling someone they're a dog person into a veritable love confession. "I don't see you ever disappointing anyone" I cannot have normal feelings about this. and John's absolutely desperate clinging to hope??? the way he breaks down and starts crying??? hnnsnnNNnnnsnsnsnsn (ALSO WORTH MENTIONING is that this is a really interesting episode for Scully's characterization in s9, but that's not the point of this right now. remind me sometime)

when Monica is freaking out during Hellbound and she runs out of the crime scene kinda panicking and John tries to grab her and stop her to make sure she's okay. also the way he's so staunchly skeptical but in that episode he kinda opens up to believing/working her theory bc he sees how much it's affecting her. the ONLY person he can even possibly believe this stuff from is Monica.

"I don't wanna see you disappointed. Not again." in Release. Monica is trying so hard to help him and like, in some ways she's trying also to protect him, and she's just... so intense about it?? like she does not ever want to see him hurt, and they've already kinda been through this once (John Doe) and it's just SO askskdnsjs — also this is the episode with the "John and Monica could have something together, he just won't let her in" line that made me about throw my computer across the room

also they're SO married in Scary Monsters, it's absolutely hilarious. it's like the moment Layla Harrison shows up they become pseudo-parents, and like... they literally act SO MUCH like my own actual parents. i will always find this hilarious. ALSO there's kind of an implication regarding Doggett and Scully's friendship based on what we know of his and Monica's shared past that's really interesting??? yet another thing to ask me about sometime lol
