Reposted from @ancestorsfuture ‘Okay, Karen’ may be deeper than you thought. A Twitter thread by @ SilverandDark provides a quick and comprehensive background behind the ‘Karen thing.’ Even if you don’t think it’s that deep, this is history and hopefully this post could spark an interest in some of you to learn more about racial and class inequities in feminist movements. To understand the actions and inactions of our ancestors is to better understand our reaponsibilities are #FutureAncestors. #AncestorsFuture #feminism #intersectionality https://www.instagram.com/p/B_YBY2OpAVY/?igshid=z8fj8yn72ked

SHOULD #SOCIALWORKERS REPLACE POLICE? ✊🏼No. We cannot just swap out policing with social work- the problems embedded in “justice” and “crime” are also embedded in our society, not just in policing. We need to fundamentally change the ways we think about human beings and the ways we think about crime. Too often, both policing and social work are focused on control: control of “unruly” citizens who fail to achieve the bland invisibility demanded by white men in power. Social work has and does take part in maintaining colonialism, (especially in Canada), power imbalances, neoliberal capitalism, and white supremacy. At the same time, social services are deeply underfunded and what funding they receive comes with strings- in the recent past, Conservative governments have explicitly refused to fund any social services that use the word “advocate” in their grant proposals. Social workers are often mandated to work within existing social structures in their contracts and by their funders, and so change has to happen outside of the field too. ✊🏼Police can get away with ignoring that #BlackLivesMatter because anti-blackness is deeply embedded throughout our entire society. Yes, defund police. But then we must rebuild emergency services, not just replace cops with teams of underpaid and overworked social workers. Replace police with a series of services with appropriate training and resources: domestic violence workers, mental health crisis teams, housing supports, etc. At the same time, we must continue conversations about decentering whiteness as the norm, about the violence embedded in capitalism, about what we define as acceptable and how we exert control on people to conform to (white) acceptability. Eliminate policing. Strengthen communities with the funding taken from police budgets.
