ALROSA, Russia's largest diamond miner, increased sales by 6.4 percent year-on-year to $ 1.2 billion for the first quarter ended March 31, Anastasia Serdyukova said in a market survey published on the Rapaport portal . Sales in carats increased by 8 percent to 10.3 million carats, according to the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) report.
The company said that the results were influenced by the change in the assortment. The average price per carat was $ 157,50, which is 14 percent lower than in the first quarter of 2012 The diamond miner exported rough diamonds worth $ 936 million, an 11 percent increase year-on-year, and sold $ 178.2 million worth of rough diamonds domestically, down 22 percent from the first quarter of 2012.
The company's output fell 7 percent year-on-year and 17 percent compared with the fourth quarter of 2012, reaching 7.5 million carats. Although production at the Nyurba and Yubileiny mines, the largest in ALROSA, increased by 13% and 67%, respectively, the production volume decreased in many other mines. ALROSA stated that this reduction was planned.
Advancement in search of diamonds
ALROSA plans to spend $ 10 to $ 20 million annually on exploration of diamonds in Angola and use its experience gained in the cold region in Yakutia. As was first reported in Rapaport Magazine in May 2013 on page 90, the company signed an agreement with the Angolan company ENDIAMA for the exploration and development of closed diamond deposits. The report says that there is a "high probability of opening new large primary diamond deposits in this country." Currently, all already discovered deposits are open deposits, the ore body of which is on the surface.
ALROSA completed the acquisition of the Nizhne-Lenskoye diamond mining company, which has placer deposits in the north-west of Yakutia in close proximity to Almazy Anabara, a manufacturing subsidiary of ALROSA. The company bought 51 percent of Nizhne-Lenskoye in January 2013 and bought the rest of the shares from the Yakut government in June 2013, paying a total of $ 220.5 million for the whole company. The company developed several placer deposits of diamonds, the price of precious stones ranging from $ 100 to $ 180 per carat. In 2012, the company produced 1.5 million carats, earning an income of $ 143 million. Its fields have sufficient reserves for development for another 14 years.
The Russian diamond mining company has already sold diamonds worth $ 27 million from the Nizhne-Lenskoye deposit at its tender in late May at an average price of $ 140 per carat.
ALROSA at Sotheby's
ALROSA plans to sell its diamonds at Sotheby's auction in autumn, a representative of the diamond mining company said. "Diamonds of ALROSA", the company's production department, in May signed an agreement with the auction house and plans to sell premium gemstones weighing more than 10 carats.
Currently, ALROSA does not plan to sell a lot of precious stones through the Sotheby's auction, as it is more interested in the marketing advantages of this stock, rather than the cash proceeds from the sale at the auction. "The United States is one of the largest diamond markets in the world, and consumers are increasingly concerned about the origin of diamonds," the company spokesman said. "The name of ALROSA is not widely known in the US market, and we hope that sales through Sotheby's will help promote the brand."
In early 2013, the company sold two diamonds at auction anonymously. The company said that the price that it received for the cut stone was a "pillow" of 20,11 carats and for the cut stone "pear" weighing 10.04 carats "was higher than they would have received, selling on their own". For the autumn auction, ALROSA prepares for sale a pink diamond weighing over 10 carats.
