Natalie nails it as always. I hadn't considered that J.K. Rowling is the 21st Century's Anita Bryant but it makes so much sense.

Some of the best bits include:

"I actually think it's really noble how she's able to project all of her own emotional baggage onto the marginalized group whose rights she's trying to take away."

and in regards to always turning trans rights into some kind of bothsidesism:

I remember kid me thinking that Robin Williams and Nathan Lane had amazing chemistry. Even now, I wish 90's America embraced that more but c'est la vie.

My memory of The Birdcage (1996) is always that it's more dated and more difficult to watch than it actually is. You hear "drag-themed comedy from the 90s based on a musical from the 80s based on a play from the 70s" and you brace yourself just a little, right? But the film has a strong gay perspective, so the fruity fag jokes mostly come off as warmly affectionate. There is a surprising amount of poignancy in Robin Williams' portrayal of Armand, grudgingly agreeing to his beloved son's request that he go back into the closet for an evening ("do me a favor and don't talk to me for a while"). The drag club's staff attempting to redecorate the apartment with stuff straight people might like (a taxidermy moose head, an enormous crucifix, and Playboy magazine) is extremely funny. Albert's histrionics are a point of tension because he does often come off as a stereotypically pathetic/comic figure, but towards the end of the movie he makes it very clear that he's aware of how people see him, and asserts that trying to copy a stoic masculinity he doesn't possess for the sake of social approval would be more pathetic. In the 1983 musical adaptation, they give "Albert" (Albin) the only good song in the whole show, "I Am What I Am", which Gloria Gaynor covered to the delight of gays everywhere. Apparently Nathan Lane wasn't (publicly) out yet in 1996, which is amazing because it means that at one point in this movie you're watching a gay man playing a straight man playing a gay man playing a straight man, in a movie about how it's important to be yourself, an absurdity that does seem to encapsulate the state of gay America in the 90s.

Mike interrupts Will’s shy backpedaling by snatching the VHS out of his hand and turning it over like he is going to find the summary. Instead he just finds a Family Video logo. “What’s it about?”

“Uhm—well it’s about these two guys at Cambridge in the early 1900’s and they’re—-friends.”

Mike blinks. “Friends?”

Will’s eyelids flutter and he presses his lips together. “Yeah—-like—really good friends.”

or, Will brings over a movie to watch with Mike and it leads to certain truths being addressed. Complete with a Mike Wheeler in crisis.

Mike smiles over at him, something shy and sweet in the way his eyes crinkle. He breathes out and folds his thin arms across his chest, rubbing along his rigid hip with his thumb.

Will tries not to stare where Mike’s worn white tank top he always wears rides up, revealing pale skin and a shock of dark hair lining his belly and disappearing underneath his stupid Star Wars pajama pants.

It’s hilarious, really, Will thinks bitterly. Stuck in a bed with your friend at the threshold of the Apocalypse, and only able to think about what hides underneath his pajamas.

It’s so unfair. It’s fucking torture.

Omg my draft for this deleted so now I have to redo it but here are some longer fics

When Lance realised Keith may be gay, the confrontation doesn’t go as he planned and things become tense between the two. If I’m honest this one made me sad in the middle but it truly has a great ending

So again, it gets pretty sad in the middle, but mostly it’s Keith getting very upset towards Lance when he gets complimented (he wants him so bad) but again in the end it’s really cute

This one is unfinished but has some great artwork to go along with the story. Basically The whole team is stranded on an island and Keith once again is more worried about Lance and who compliments him than himself. So far it’s mostly jealousy stuff but I can tell when future chapters come out it will be even more Klancey
