Sacrament
14 maps by Clan [B0S] of the russian community.
2011

Tumblr media
MAP01: Reposa In Pace by Slavius
Sacrament is a particularly special map that stands out for its unorthodox factors to the traditional, and boy does it show it! MAP01 is an interesting environmental proposal with a tight, labyrinthine design that enjoys losing the player in a new world more than throwing him into combat. 3/5
Tumblr media
MAP02: Doxylamine Moon by Lainos
Iconic in the history of the game and I can easily see why. This is a huge map that represents an incredibly detailed city with a deep and vast opportunity for exploration in every area. That, coupled with an excellent setting make this a map that is hard to forget. 4/5
Tumblr media
MAP03: Dirtyllery by Wraith
Confusing at times but with more combat than previous maps and a fairly interesting design that combines a variety of rooms, offering an interesting progress system that, although it gets lost at times, is manageable. 3/5
Tumblr media
MAP04: Phobia by Dr. Max
More direct than the previous ones and with a comprehensive layout that offers exploration and combat under an atmospheric, yet distinctive, presentation compared to the rest of the maps. 4/5
Tumblr media
MAP05: Lavatraz by Wraith
A fortress in the middle of a lava lake surrounded by a large crowd of enemies. This is an intense map with enough combat to satisfy those who want a bit of a fight, while maintaining a good flow and offering excellent presentation for combat. 4/5
Tumblr media
MAP06: Pandora's Box by Archi
Large and expansive, with huge open areas and an iconic start through a shadowy tunnel. Fantastic map, with good combat and many areas to explore as well as many fights to participate in. 4/5
Tumblr media
MAP07: Arena by Dragon Hunter
The most divergent map of all maps. This is a combat arena that ends with a totally unexpected slaughter surprise. It is probably the most traditional map of the whole set, one that differs from the philosophy of the episode but still perfectly satisfying, fun, entertaining and well challenging. 4/5
Tumblr media
MAP08: Zone X by Archi
We return to a realistic map that combines the urban effect with a bit of industrial architecture while offering progress through a palpable and realistic layout. With constant combat and a few surprises, it manages to make its mark. 4/5
Tumblr media
MAP09: Vancouver by Archi
It has nothing to do with Vancouver, but more to do with Doom. This is a map that manages to perfectly combine the atmosphere of the episode with a good puzzle system and exploration without sacrificing combat at any time; offering interesting challenges, varied and progress that flows without pause under a good atmosphere of fun. 5/5
Tumblr media
MAP10: Wood Prison by Azamael
Gigantic wooden (or brick?) fortress with a huge multitude of rooms and scenarios. Combat is intense and almost constant, but the layout leaves something to be desired at times, as well as a few missing textures. 3/5
Tumblr media
MAP11: Seaport by Azamael
A fascinating concept that combines natural scenery with human architecture, giving it a distinctive touch that together with the MIDI and the progress system, create a very palpable atmosphere. 4/5
Tumblr media
MAP12: Industrial Processing by Dragon Hunter
Quite large, dark and ambient. At times it reminds me of the tight maps of Doom 3, combining intense combat in tight corners that encourage tactical combat and be careful with our steps. The visuals are often hidden in the darkness, but it manages to convey a decent idea of abandoned tech-base. 3/5
Tumblr media
MAP13: Controlled System by BeeWen
This is a map to end on a high note... gold. Huge and quite distinctive thanks to the excellent work of detail and ambience, adding a Silent Hill song, this map bleeds atmosphere and releases horrors. With a huge layout, unfortunately, it shoots itself in the foot by creating an almost incomprehensible path system that becomes incredibly complicated near the map, however, the challenging combat and wonderful visuals manage to give it its name. 4/5
Tumblr media
MAP14: LOGOEND by Lainos
And finally, an unwinnable map that works like a credits map, but without the credits. Still, the monument and the skybox is great. Maybe music would have improved this. 3/5
Overall:
» Sacrament (2011) By Clan [B0S]
Deep in the snowy lands, far to the east and hidden in the veil of mystery and poem, lies an abandoned world, without faith, without time; a world where man does not exist and sin reigns, desolate lands, lost lands, home of the devil and battlefield for all those who dare to desecrate the... sacrament. Whoops! I missed the rails. That little paragraph may encapsulate a bit of the idea and excitement behind this 14 map WAD designed to totally blow your mind in the most unorthodox and fantastical way you can find within the confines of Doom. Sacrament is an episode created by the B0S clan that shows how the world of Doom still has much, much more to offer.
Sacrament's story is something that would make a writer's cheeks swell with the desire to make it a novel: The plot follows a "Clan [B0S] fighter" as he wakes up from a nightmare into an apocalypse already in-progress. It is then gradually revealed that "the worthy" have already ascended to heaven, while everyone else have turned into bloodthirsty demons who are left to infight. He journeys into a now-desolate world, searching for answers as to what had happen, and why only he retained his humanity. Extract from the Doomwiki. That alone sounds like something absolutely awesome that inmediatly gathers my attention, and as expected, the rest of the WAD also did. With 14 maps, you'd better be ready to embark on an adventure of your own that is worthwhile in every way and demonstrates with considerable quality how to create a world entirely within the confines of Doom in a creative, inventive and different way to what we are used to. As a result, a kind of environmental son that evokes distant sensations of desolation, added to an explicit combat that sometimes is silent and then surprises you with brutal violence.
Sacrament knows very well what it is trying to achieve and succeeds with flying colors, even if it is not to everyone's taste. The main aspect of this WAD and its distinctive point is nothing more and nothing less than the amazing presentation it has. When I talk about presentation, I mean the shared set of visuals, progressive narration and extra details like music or even the titlescreen. WAD makes extensive use of all these details to create an ironically perfect conglomeration. While presentation is often overlooked or of regular importance in the mainstream Doom landscape, it is an aspect that can still pleasantly elevate the value of a WAD. That's just what happens with Sacrament. @Lainos is the mastermind behind the conception of this work, and he manages to successfully convey the idea of desolation and abandonment that each map possesses. The cohesion is generally understandable, and even though the maps are not dependent on each other, each manages to create a shared atmosphere among the entire WAD, either through the use of realistic architecture combined with muted colors, or even sharing design similarities that evoke a shared history in different areas. Sacrament successfully manages to give that fantastic feeling; that of playing in an environmental adventure like no other.
It is worth mentioning the incredible use of music and colors. Music used to be a factor that ranked as a rear position among the overall quality of WADs in the old days. A positive factor, but not essential. On the other hand, modern times have begun to highlight the essentials of music and how they can pleasantly increase the quality of a WAD. Proof of this is the recent Cacoward for OST. Well, Sacrament makes extensive use of music from different sources and all in an .OGG format, which means that we will hear high quality music in glorious sound true to the way the author intended. While the music is not of original production for the project, the selection of each tune was done with enough attention to create a comprehensive odyssey of ambient symphonies. MIDI breaks the mood at a certain point, yes, but the great job they have taken in choosing songs that match the color palette of the map and the ambiance is a good example of how this format is perfect for drowning us in a world. Add to that an excellent use of skybox, dark blue colors and lots of creepy textures reminiscent of rust and confinement, and surprise, Sacrament is a work of pure ambience.
But not everything that shines blue is sapphire, and here we must see the strange, unorthodox and polemic side of this WAD, the gameplay. Sacrament tells you directly in its structure that it is interested in the environment, leaving the gameplay to take a back seat (not entirely true, but you get the point), something that many would consider sacrilege, but thanks to good management decisions and excellent production, it works under the same aesthetics of this project. Most of the maps make a great focus on exploration and environment, especially the @Lainos maps, which bleed pure desolation and loneliness. The influence of Lainos is felt in most of the maps, especially with the intense use of music and skybox, on the other hand, not everything is generally pure exploration, it would be somewhat detrimental to steal the gameplay completely to this map, and if what we want is action, well there is, in one way or another there is. Intense maps that offer explosive combat like MAP07: Arena by @Dragon Hunter or the huge and challenging MAP13: Controlled System by @BeeWen, both maps that show incredible use of design and devastating gameplay at times. However, if Sacrament is a black sheep, then these maps are Sacrament's black sheep, so to speak.
Sacrament is not meant to be a run-and-gun, nor a kind of traditional WAD. It comes with all the right to break schemes and demonstrate something different and well produced, something that however strange and fascinating it may be, it manages to establish its place within the annals of the history of WADs. While its complex layouts and divergent gameplay may be somewhat detrimental to some players, that doesn't detract from the simple fact that Sacrament is a quality work that deserves to be tried just for the one virtue it possesses, that of allowing us to plunge into a world of Doom.

An HIV crisis raises the question: Should health officials be activists? – STAT
Tumblr media
Most local health officials don’t accept their jobs expecting to be roped into political activism.
Amid Covid-19, though, politics became a central element of health experts’ job descriptions. In Washington, government researcher Anthony Fauci publicly feuded with former President Trump. In many cities and states, local health departments were forced to square off against governors who resisted coronavirus mitigation strategies like business closures or mask mandates.
The series of squabbles has raised the question of whether, to be effective, local health officials need to add politics to their list of day-to-day responsibilities. And while the fights have been most pronounced amid the pandemic, they’ve even cropped up in states otherwise lauded for their coronavirus response, like West Virginia.
advertisement
There, the dynamic has played out in the context of a worst-in-the-nation HIV outbreak linked to injection drug use. This month, as local officials scrambled to prevent further spread, the state legislature all but banned one of their most effective tools for doing so: syringe exchanges that distribute sterile needles to people whose drug use places them at high risk of infection.
“Working seven days a week on things that are outside our area of expertise, the political backlash against popular strategies — it has taken its toll nationwide on our public health workforce,” said Michael Kilkenny, the CEO of the Cabell-Huntington Health Department in West Virginia, which serves the hard-hit city of Huntington. “It is frustrating, and we see what the consequences are.”
advertisement
Willingly or not, local health officials’ involvement in local West Virginia politics has been slowly escalating since 2018, when Charleston, the state’s largest city, closed its only city-run needle exchange.
This month, several local officials vocally opposed a controversial bill aimed at tightly regulating syringe-exchange programs, but the state Senate eventually approved it on a 27-7 vote.
The new requirements make things harder for the people trying to access the services and those trying to provide them. They require that programs tag syringes with individualized bar codes, and that recipients present a photo ID and receive new syringes at a 1:1 ratio to old ones they bring back, a requirement that flies directly in the face of federal recommendations.
“We now have a state law that makes it illegal to run a program based on CDC best practices,” said Robin Pollini, an epidemiology professor at West Virginia University.
HIV-prevention advocates say the move comes at the worst possible time. The state’s HIV case count, proportional to its population, is already among the worst nationally. Kanawha County, which is the state’s largest at 180,000 residents, recorded roughly as many HIV cases in 2019 as all of New York City, where 8 million people live. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has warned that the known HIV cases in West Virginia could represent the “tip of the iceberg” of a much larger crisis.
Syringe exchanges have long been demonstrated to be effective tools used to prevent people who use drugs from sharing needles and, in the process, spreading diseases like HIV or hepatitis C.
Local health officials aren’t just going up against their political superiors. Often, they’ve clashed with the very communities they serve. West Virginia residents, for example, have also gone head-to-head with health officials to oppose the syringe exchange, alleging that it increases drug use in their neighborhoods or puts people at risk of stepping on a stray needle.
It mirrors a broader national theme: Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, governors in Republican-controlled states like Texas and Arizona have sought to ban local governments from imposing disease-prevention measures like mask mandates or school closures.
In many cases, the pushback has forced local health officials to decide between honoring the desires of the community they serve, or following the science and advocating directly against their own constituents and the mayors or county leaders they work for.
Even those who push back are often fighting a losing battle. Raw emotion will always win out against data-driven arguments presented by a government official, said Kilkenny, the Cabell County health executive.
“If you are scared to death, you’re not analyzing what’s going on,” he said. “You are running or you’re fighting. While you’re running or you’re fighting, you’re not thinking.”
Amid the backlash, local health leaders say they often have little recourse, even when they’re aware that the public’s desires conflict directly with their mission of preventing illness and saving lives.
“The implications are tough, because oftentimes local health officials are either hired by or supervised by county executives or mayors,” said Oscar Alleyne, the chief of programs for the National Association of County and City Health Officials. “They have to navigate those eggshells while at the same time clearly articulating what works.”
In critics’ eyes, however, walking on eggshells isn’t enough. In the face of a health emergency, Pollini argued that working to change the political landscape is an essential part of a public health official’s job — especially if local politics are keeping them from addressing a crisis.
“If you understand the science and you’re a public health person, you have to make an effort to turn public opinion,” she said.
In West Virginia, some local officials have attempted to land somewhere in between.
Kilkenny highlighted his testimony before a state Senate committee, which he said may have helped to water down the legislation, allowing syringe exchanges to continue in limited form. An earlier version of the bill would have outlawed the exchanges entirely.
“We educated [lawmakers] that we need this tool,” he said. “It was not successful in changing the outcome. But it possibly mitigated what would have been completely devastating legislation and made it only very very challenging.”
Sherri Young, who leads the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department and serves the state’s largest county, said that appropriately weighing science against community discomfort is often impossible. Her county has not operated a syringe exchange since 2018. Two local nonprofit groups have offered limited services since, the larger of which may be forced to close in light of the new law.
“I don’t know that the right balance has been struck,” Young said. “The ideal situation, if I could design anything, is one that the public would be comfortable with, but does work for prevention of HIV.”
She also defended the department’s work, saying it has worked to combat the HIV crisis via testing and aggressive outreach to vulnerable populations, especially in anticipation of controversy surrounding syringe exchange programs.
“We knew, because it was going to be a political issue, how to prepare for it moving forward,” she said.
Pollini, however, was direct in her criticism. Young, she said, didn’t fight hard enough to preserve evidence-based strategies like syringe exchange programs.
“We will continue to have people infected with a completely preventable disease,” she said, “because no one is standing up and saying: Hey, let me have a conversation with you about these programs and why they’re so important to our community.”

It’s no secret that electronic music can be incredibly popular during times of recession due to how inexpensive it generally is to create it. As a result of computers being used as instruments for creation, there’s been a wave of young bedroom artists that have been able to create and distribute and perform their art in such a way that had previously been impossible due to lack of capital. Instrumental hip-hop producers like Clams Casino, Friendzone, and Star Slinger caught a bunch of people’s attention in the early 2010′s with beats co-opted by big name rappers, and now young guys and girls in their homes are making no budget beats whose heart and style rival some of the best known producers in the game, and no one knows about them outside of those of us who know how to dig. Nearing the end of the decade, we have several lesser known veins of emotional trap-influenced music, offshoots like sadboys and vaportrap, and the thirst for the union between dark hard bass-heavy percussion and emotional ambience doesn’t seem to be slaked. One such purveyor of that general vibe is Brant Hunter. His project is named Feels, he has a handful of releases under his belt, and he reached out to me with some thoughts on his experience.
Tumblr media
1. What is the story behind the moniker "Feels"?
I started the moniker “Feels” in early 2012 or so, as an alternate moniker to my then current one, “Stelliform”. Stelliform was an ambient / drone project of mine, and once beats started to infiltrate my music, I knew it was different enough to warrant having an alternate name. There isn’t very much behind the name itself. Back when I came up with it, “Feels” was, and still is, my favorite album by Animal Collective; Which is a band I will probably cherish forever, even if they’ve never truly influenced the sound of the project that was named after it. I must also touch base on the fact that prior to the name choice, I didn’t know “feels” was a fairly popular meme at the time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. How would you describe your own music?
I try not to. I definitely like to hear how other people hear the music, because I know their thoughts probably don’t quite match how I think it sounds. It’s gone through quite a few changes over the years, but if I had to describe some of the traits that have stayed the same, I would have to say that It’s always atmospheric, and a bit repetitive. With Feels, it’s always been made with the idea that maybe a rapper or vocalist would use the tracks as instrumentals for their project, so most of the tracks might feel minimal or maybe even a little incomplete, but I definitely try to put enough in there to have them stand up on their own too, ya know?
Feels - Original Fake
3. What are your greatest influences (artists, experiences, weather, etc.)?
Something that really influenced me after I read it and I think about a lot, is the story of how Yasunori Mitsuda composed the music for Super Nintendo game, Chrono Trigger. To paraphrase, he was unhappy with the position he was working in at Square as a sound effects engineer, and wanted to be a composer for the company. He demanded for his boss to let him compose, which he was then assigned to be the sole composer on Chrono Trigger. He worked himself to the point of passing out on a nightly basis, frequently waking up with new ideas for the score. He worked himself to the point of developing stomach ulcers, leading him to be hospitalized, and having another composer have to step in and finish for him. Whenever I don’t feel motivated to make music, (Which is more and more it seems), I always think about Mitsuda, and how he made things happen for himself, and how nothing else mattered to him except his art.
Chrono Trigger OST - End Theme
As far as personal experiences, my influences can easily be traced back to a few particular sources from my childhood. I usually tell people David Wise’s score to Donkey Kong Country 2 on Super specifically is and always will be the thing that keeps me pursuing a life involved in music. Everything about that music evokes every kind of emotion in me. Anyone who has played that game as a kid will know what I mean. My other influences come from scattered memories of being younger, and my music is a medium to try and replicate those feelings I had. Like playing Crash Bandicoot 2 for the first time in a Blockbuster; Watching Goosebumps on tv and seeing all the commercials and PSAs; Being with my parents in various department stores in the late nineties.
Donkey Kong Country 2 OST - Hot Head Bop
A countless number of different artists have actually impacted the sound of my music through their influence. So much so, that I even named one of my Stelliform compilations, “Impressions”, as a reference to me thinking that most of my songs were me just doing impressions or renditions of my favorite artists. To name drop some of the big ones though, they would be: Machinedrum, Daniel Lopatin, FRIENDZONE, Clams Casino, Autechre, James Ferraro, Andy Stott, Vangelis, and definitely a few others that I’m missing atm.
FRIENDZONE - Chuch
4. What is your opinion on the ever-changing structure of independent music?
That’s a heavy question, and one that I don’t have a definite answer on. I guess it’s just been hard for me to keep up with the politics of it. As far as it affects me, I guess it makes me feel like I have a maybe slightly higher chance of getting somewhere with my music, as the current structure provides a more versatile platform for artists like myself to find an audience, however niche the music might be. There are certainly a lot more options out there to get yourself into a better position, such as crowd funding and Youtube channels, but I do feel that it creates a serious lack of emphasis put on the quality of the music, and a lot more focus on the less important things, or, what I see as less important, like ones commitment to networking, aesthetic choices, or simply how engaging you can be to your audience.
5. Does making music pay the bills? Is it more of a dedicated hobby?
Unfortunately, music doesn’t and hasn’t ever paid the bills. Though it is my absolute goal to make that become a reality. As it stands, music can only be considered a hobby for me, because I think one of the descriptors of being a professional is making money from your craft. The biggest obstacle for me to overcome right now is answering the questions that I pose to myself, “Who can I market my music to, and where can I find the appropriate circumstances to create jobs from it?” I’m considering my options, but unfortunately I don’t really know how to elevate things into the next stage.
6. What do you do for a living, and do you like it?
I’m a server and manager at a chain breakfast restaurant. This is what pays the bills for me, and has allowed me to fund all my music gear expenses. Do I like it? No. I mean, maybe I used to, and day to day I get through it just fine, but now I feel that my time there is time that could be better used elsewhere, and as life piles more and more things onto me, it seems less and less likely that it is something that can sustain me much farther. I really have no fall back, and naively enough, I would always sort of hold on hope that music could maybe take me somewhere.
7. What are some other things you enjoy about life besides art?
I’ve always loved video games; I’ve been collecting games for a long time, too. Mostly Playstation 1 era and Super Nintendo, but I’m also into modern console games; my favorites being Rocket league and Star Wars Battlefront. I’m big into streetwear and vintage clothing as well. I’m always wearing brands like Raised By Wolves, Champion, Starter, Supreme, etc. I’m also a big hockey fan, and watch a game on TV every night that I can. The New York Rangers are my favorite team. Other than that, I’m usually watching shows with my girlfriend or playing LEGO and Playmobil with my kids.
Tumblr media
8. As a known music fan, what are some of best musical experiences you have had with other people's music?
My favorite records are always my favorite because I’ve had some sort of memorable moment attached to them. Whether that means I found them at the right time in my life, or maybe they opened my eyes to something. For example, when The National’s album “Trouble Will Find Me” came out, it was shortly after my first child was born, and I can vividly remember walking him back and fourth in my first apartment singing along to the record, trying to get him to sleep. I’ll always remember that. I’ll always remember the first time I heard “The Glow Pt. 2” by The Microphones, and how I was devastated by the way I could hear Phil Elverum’s teenage heartbreak. “Instrumentals” by Clams Casino is a record that changed my life in the way that I saw music. He so efficiently combined ambient sounds with hip hop beats, opening up an entire world of music to me, which together with FRIENDZONE’s “Collection 1”, I totally credit to the creation of Feels.
The Microphones - The Moon
9. Also, what are some of the most memorable moments for you in your own musical journey?
My favorite moments in music actually come from when I played with my good friend in his music project, at the time called “Sea Glasses”. It was just him and I, and we would mostly just practice in his parents house and play various live shows around Halifax. We had a lot of good times, playing everything from cd stores to festivals. We opened up for Julie Doiron at the Halifax Pop Explosion; We were heckled at a dive of a bar by a guy that looked like Axl Rose; We even held our own show in the middle of a snowstorm to a crowd that consisted of mostly only the other bands that were playing. I thought his music was incredible, and it was criminal how overlooked his tunes were in this city. He ended up moving to another province to go to school, and I’ve failed to find anything else quite like the dynamic that we had.
