You are responsible for certain areas that are crucial to your life and work and require constant focus. They could be:
Job responsibilities may include marketing, human resources, product management, research and development, direct reports, or engineering.
Personal responsibilities like health and finances, kids, writing, car, home, or health.
Here are some tips for implementing the TO system: We all learned how to organize our information in high school. We were taught to categorize lecture notes, as well as handouts and study materials according to academic subjects, such as math, history, or chemistry. Yet, without even realizing it, we take the same approach throughout our adulthood. We categorized the files and documents we had based on general topics such as \” marketing\”, \” psychology\”, \” business\” or \” ideas\”. This is not a good idea for your life after college. In the workplace there are no lessons, there are no exams with the workplace; there are no lectures, no graded exams, and no diplomas. The teacher won’t tell you what to write for your final test, as there is no such thing. What you experience, whether at work or in life, are the results you strive to achieve. You’re looking to introduce a new product, plan a family trip and make an important choice, locate a daycare center in your area, write an article, or even hit an annual sales figure. As you juggle a busy day trying hard to help make events happen, you won’t have time to explore a subject as vast as “psychology” to locate the unique information you need. Instead of organizing information into broad categories like in school, I suggest organizing it according to the goals and projects you’re engaged in today. This is the meaning of “organizing through agency,” which is a phrase I’ll use over and over throughout the book. If you’re preparing to tackle an illustration project, for example, you’ll need all the documents, notes, assets, and other information relevant to the project together and you’ll be good to go. Artificial intelligence services play an important role.

What Is a Restaurant?
A restaurant is an establishment that gives food to clients. It could be a standalone company or be affixed to various other services. The main distinctions in between a dining establishment and other services are service, design of offering, expense, and area. Regardless of the business model, restaurants are a key economic contributor to a city's economy. There are several variants of the dining establishment, which include great dining, junk food, laid-back dining, and much more. For example, a junk food restaurant could market pre-made foods, while a great eating establishment might serve only exquisite food. Likewise, a laid-back restaurant might provide an affordable, yet satisfying dish. One more example is a dining establishment which provides drive-through solutions. Historically, the term dining establishment was utilized in numerous languages, consisting of Spanish and French. Throughout the Enlightenment age, the well-off vendor class in Paris started to utilize the term. Here's a good read about restaurant, check this link out! Therefore, a variety of brand-new restaurants opened. Among them was the Simpson's Fish Supper House, which served the popular "fish normal" for two shillings. To gather more awesome ideas, go to website here to get started. The beginnings of the word dining establishment can be mapped back to the old Greeks, who were known to have had several sorts of consuming establishments. They included roadside inns, inns for visitors, and even thermopoliae, which were prototypes for modern-day convenience food stands. Numerous variations of the restaurant can be found in other languages. In France, for instance, a dining establishment is called a table d'hote. A table d'hote is an open-air dish served at a set price to a variety of consumers. Originally, a table d'hote contained a public table, without any food selection or food selection products. At some point, restaurants evolved into more advanced offerings, such as the multi-course kaiseki eating custom that included special offering recipes. One more version of the restaurant is the gastropub, a pub which offers a wide variety of food, commonly with a concentrate on consuming. Bars are additionally understood for their enjoyment options, that include dancing floors, TVs, and also games. Now, a gastropub could offer a variety of drinks, such as beer, red wine, and also alcohol. Nevertheless, the most typical kind of dining establishment in the US is a convenience food dining establishment. These facilities typically offer pre-made food, often with an affordable price factor. Convenience food restaurants are typically franchised chains that supply standard food selection items. Dining establishments are a large component of the city's economy, as well as the sector continues to develop. This schedules in huge part to consumer fads, such as changing preferences for food and also drink options, a growing number of single-parent households, as well as a climbing percentage of individuals with higher earnings. In addition, dining establishment owners are frequently discovering brand-new ways to maintain their business thriving. Such advancements include modern technology, such as chatbots and also scheduling systems, and specialized phone apps. While the dining establishment industry is always progressing, the newest patterns are usually centered on development. As an example, the National Restaurant Association lately released its five restaurant patterns for 2020. Several of these include the addition of more healthful and organic food options, along with the rise in restaurant dimension and also the development of innovation. Kindly visit this website https://www.wikihow.com/Open-a-Restaurant for more useful reference.

hi! i wanted to say i love reading your reflections on teaching, and in general i really look up to/am inspired by your thoughts regarding education and academia. if it's not too much to ask (completely understandable if it is, in that case please disregard!) i would love to get your advice on college related things?
i had pretty significant academic struggles throughout grade school, and ended up dropping out of college after a year. i would've graduated this may, so lately i've been considering going back and finishing my bachelor's. but i've been waffling on this decision because of 1) anxiety about having to drop out again, and 2) some confusion about what i actually want to study. i guess i'm wondering, is it worth it to start from scratch? my struggles were mostly about mental health stuff & difficulty keeping up with coursework—i loved being in the classroom, working with professors, learning from other students. i like being challenged intellectually, but if i have issues with followthrough, is there a way to work on that??? i know these are Big Questions, lol--whether they are answerable or not, cheers and thank you and i hope you are doing well these days. <3
hey! happy to give my thoughts, for what they're worth. you know your situation better than i do so the specifics may or may not be relevant, but i can give some advice just based on seeing lots of students pass through four-year programs!
i've worked with a number of students who took time away from college and came back to finish later. i took a year off myself in the middle of college for mental health reasons, though my school allowed you to take a two-semester leave of absence for any reason (so i always had the safety net of knowing i could come back without having to reapply or start over). in my experience, time away is almost always a good thing. sometimes people just really need that break from the stressors of the college environment! but more importantly, i think people benefit from having a few years' experience living and working in the world.
even though it can be intimidating to come back to college as an older student, i think older students or nontraditional students who took time off and came back tend to underestimate how much more confident and assured in themselves they'll be once they're back in the classroom. working out in the world for a while, even if it's not a job that you especially love or feel is relevant to your long-term goals, tends to help you build more trust in your own ability to get stuff done, manage responsibilities, and be an adult person in the world. in your time away, you've probably grown more than you think, and you may find that some of the things you struggled with at 18 just don't feel as daunting anymore. or they might feel daunting, but you also have more experience talking and working with other people, and you may feel more confident in seeking out & using your college's various academic success resources.
have you considered a two-year college as a possible next step? one of my advisees this year was an adult student who went to college for a year, dropped out, served in the military for four years, came back to do an associate's degree, and decided he liked school enough that he wanted to transfer to our university and finish his degree. (now he's going on to do a phd next fall!!!!) he's one of the most passionate advocates for community colleges i've ever met, and he's stayed actively involved in our local CC community & now mentors recent transfer students at our university. he's talked at length about how CCs are this amazing way for students to explore their interests without having to take on the huge price tag of a four-year degree, within a learning community that's much warmer, more responsive to student needs, and more accepting of the diverse paths that lead people to & through higher education. i wonder if you might consider taking a semester or a year of courses at your local CC, to dip your toes back in and see if you're still feeling energized by the experience.
you might find that some of the courses aren't intellectually challenging enough, but this might also be a wonderful opportunity to create the kind of learning experience you want to have. i was a full-time community college student for a year during my year away from yale, and while i'm sure i was just INSUFFERABLE in many ways, i had a prof in my Western Civ course who was really generous with his time/energy and met with me outside of class to help me figure out how to make the papers into something that i found really exciting and challenging to write. so the class kind of became what i made of it, and i got to read some stuff (dostoevsky!!!) that sent me down all kinds of interesting unexpected rabbitholes. the former CC grad i mentioned above was an extraordinarily bright student who would always go to office hours and ask his profs for more recommended readings, and he ended up becoming a TA for one of his courses and helped them redesign basically their entire intro humanities curriculum as a student advisor. so your CC experience can absolutely be what you make of it. and even if your profs can't give you that kind of support, you could practice doing it for yourself, setting little challenges for yourself either focused on the intellectual aspects ('I'm going to read and cite two scholarly sources in this paper, even though it's not required') or on developing strategies for effectively managing the workload ('I'm going to schedule a writing center appointment on Thurs, so I have to finish this paper two days before the deadline—and then I can devote my weekend study time to practicing for my Spanish test').
CC would be a slightly lower stakes environment for you to try out college again— lower-stakes both in the sense that it's cheaper (so if you decide you don't want to continue, you're not out as much money / don't feel compelled to go on to justify the debt you've taken on) and in the sense that the workload might be more manageable for you as you readjust to academic life and build systems & structures that work for you. as you probably have gathered from this blog, i am a HUGE believer in doing lower-stakes things many times over to build your own confidence and your trust in yourself, and then gradually scaling up the difficulty. by the time you reach the hard thing, you've already built up this strong image of yourself as a person who can handle challenges (and you've also had the chance to identify areas where you struggle & experiment with developing workable solutions).
if a two-year college isn't something you're especially interested in, i think it's definitely possible to start a four-year degree again. if that's the path you choose, i would strongly recommend reaching out to students in some of the degree programs you're tentatively interested in. people are almost always happy to share their ~wisdom~ (see: this ask response, lol) and most people love being asked for their thoughts on the pros and cons of something they know well. so you could get an honest sense from students of what the program is like, what the workload is like, and how useful or engaging people find the required courses for the degree. but also know that it's pretty normal to take courses all over in your first year or two (you have the advantage of having done a freshman year before, so you probably know this!), so you might just want to plan to try out a bunch of different things, with the goal of narrowing your focus by the end of your first year, or midway through your second.
i would also HIGHLY recommend spending lots of time familiarizing yourself with the resources your university has to offer. learn everything you can about the kind of mental health counseling and support they offer to students, and see if there are things you can set up in advance for yourself before you even step foot on campus. for instance, our university offers individual counseling, but they also have free groups that meet every week or two around different topics (coping with stress, students in recovery, etc) that are led by a counselor. check out your university's writing center or peer tutoring centers, too, and set up a standing appointment once a month or once a week or whatever, to bring in something you're working on—so that you know that every week, you're going to talk with someone about what's going well and what you're struggling with in your assignments.
you might also want to look into your university's services for students with disabilities office, as they can help you figure out if you are eligible for various kinds of accommodations or additional support (extra time on exams, notetaking services, recorded lectures, etc). i know you mentioned that you've dealt with academic struggles in grade school, too. if you think it's possible that there may be underlying learning differences that are affecting your academic work, it might be worth seeing if they can help you find lower-cost testing, so you can get a diagnosis that qualifies you for additional accommodations and university support.
many schools, esp large public universities, also have resource centers and mentoring programs for students from specific demographics who may benefit from additional structure and support in their early years of college. my university has a variety of resource centers and programs for students from low-income backgrounds, first-gen students, students who transferred from community college, etc. you don't have to take advantage of ALL of these resources, but proactively establishing a support network long before you need it is a really good way to set yourself up for success. and even just doing the research will probably help you feel more confident in your capacity to 'follow through', since you'll know that you're going into this with your eyes wide open AND with a detailed plan for what to do if you run into some of the same obstacles you encountered the first time around.
speaking of detailed plans: i find it helpful sometimes to do IF-THEN exercises with students when they're stressed about something on the horizon or unsure about whether they can handle some new challenge. IF-THEN is just what it sounds like: 'IF this thing I'm nervous about happens, THEN I'm going to do X, Y, or Z.' what i like about this exercise (i use it with myself too aha) is that it acknowledges that sometimes the thing you're dreading DOES happen. sometimes the professor you emailed for an extension says no. sometimes the TA doesn't understand why you're confused about the assignment. sometimes you don't have time to finish the reading before class. sometimes you overschedule yourself and you have to pull an all-nighter to finish two papers on the same night. scary things, confidence-shaking things, happen all the time, but they are rarely fatal! and there can be something really powerful about acknowledging and naming the thing you're concerned about, and then generating a few next steps you could take, should the thing you're dreading come to pass. i could see you doing something like this as you start thinking about the things that tripped you up last time, or made it difficult for you to balance the workload. if X happens, then what could you try next? giving yourself a few options means that you already have backup plans, too, which can make the whole situation less terrifying. if this happens, i might have to try this, or this, or this, and those things might not be the most fun or the easiest to do or the 'best' thing academically, but they'll get me through this difficult moment mostly in one piece, and once i'm through it i can look back on it and learn from it, or adjust the structures i've built for myself moving forward, to reduce the chance that X happens again.
PHEW!!! sorry this got so long but that is just the RISK YOU TAKE when sending me anons 😅 i hope that some of this is helpful to you, or at least sparks some useful thinking for you, even if it's not all directly applicable to your situation. i would say that if you love learning and find being in the classroom exhilarating, then you should absolutely go back to college! but that doesn't mean you have to go back right away, or that you have to go back and do it exactly the same way you did the first time. there are lots of possible paths to higher ed, and there's no particular rush—college will always be there, if it's something you decide you want now or at some future point in your life. i would also just reiterate again one of the core Themes of This Blog, which is that the brain is NEUROPLASTIC, and that humans have a truly astounding amazing capacity to change, grow, and learn new things (including new ways of getting around old obstacles or working through old challenges). just because you struggled the first time doesn't mean you are doomed to repeat that pattern. if you can spend some time thoughtfully reflecting on what you found most difficult to manage the first time through, you are better equipped to make plans, design new structures for yourself, and build the support networks that will help you thrive in college.

June 8, 2020: King Felipe and Queen Letizia visited the High Performance Center of the Higher Sports Council. They wanted to accompany a prominent group of elite athletes from Spain, in one of the first days of reopening after the lockdown. More than a hundred athletes are already preparing for the next international competitions, including the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, postponed by the pandemic to 2021.
Felipe and Letizia have been received by the Minister of Culture and Sports, José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes and by the President of the Superior Council of Sports, Irene Lozano, with whom they have held an informative meeting on the current situation and challenges of the CSD, whose headquarters they have visited for the first time.
They have toured part of the 150,000 square meters of sports facilities of the High Performance Center, which concentrates the largest number of high-level athletes in all of Spain, with 42 modalities distributed in the Central Pavilion and in multiple buildings I and II of high competition; where they have been able to witness the training exercises of Carolina Marin, Lidia Valentín, Rey Zapata, Sara Andrés, Mohamed Enhamed, Desirée Vilas, among other Olympic and Paralympic athletes and athletes and male and female teams from different disciplines.
Finally, on the athletics tracks they have had a meeting with the group of athletes present in the CAR today, to whom the Kings with their presence have conveyed their spirit to recover strength and spirit as soon as possible and continue representing Spain, as best sports image of our country in the World.
Don Felipe pointed out "... See you train and also listen to how you have lived this time, which has been so difficult for everyone, is also very encouraging. You, with that sporting spirit that characterizes you, have undoubtedly made an effort to maintain yourself physically and mentally; and put a horizon ahead again and be able to prepare well. .. ", he also said" ... above all we want to thank all the professionals who, with their knowledge, their experience and their effort also, allow and ensure that you athletes can follow your vocation and your desire to compete and in the end to overcome yourselves ... ", the King continued to reflect that" ...Athletes have always known how to get ahead, overcome difficulties, you have had faith in yourself. You have not given up, because you have been the subject is one day after another, with a lot of effort, clenching your teeth when necessary and many times enduring even pain. If you have had an injury and I think that most of those who compete end up having some in their career, you have overcome it and recovered; or you have done everything possible to achieve it. Without getting discouraged, without fainting and with the self-love and self-esteem that characterizes you as athletes and without a doubt also as citizens ... ", and to end Don Felipe stressed that" ...In a team all its members are necessary. You know it well. No one left over. Lean on each other and help those who need it, cover their gap when necessary and without being noticed. In a team everyone contributes their individual condition to make the team much better. More powerful, winner, stronger, more resistant, proud of their achievements and working to improve permanently ... Spain is a team. All the Spanish, the 47 million Spaniards are a great team. And we need to overcome this crisis by relying on those values that define you athletes. That is the spirit that we need to strengthen and that will allow us to overcome this situation and put Spain back on top. At the top of the competition, at the top of the ranking ... ".
Before leaving the facilities of the Higher Sports Council, the King and Queen visited the Joaquin Blume Residence, which welcomes young athletes in boarding school and reopens its doors today after the closure decreed three months ago under the state of alarm by the health crisis.

Patient Zero
I wanted to try something a little different. I think this story needs some tweaking, but I hope everyone likes it!
****
Throughout human history, disease outbreaks have caused devastation on a worldwide scale; from the Justinian plague in ancient Rome, to the bubonic plague of the middle ages, to the Spanish Flu epidemic of the early 20th century. With advancements in medicine, we'd like to say we can limit the spread of disease, but there's always an underlying concern of another worldwide epidemic.
Right now, there's elevated concern regarding a new microorganism called African Pneumonic Corynebacterium, or APC. APC is a newly discovered species of gram-negative, aerobic, club/rod shaped bacterium that lives in the proboscis of female anophele mosquitoes, a species known to carry malaria, west nile virus, and other pathogens. This species of bacteria has become troublesome for medical practitioners worldwide due to its antibiotic resistant characteristics and its ability to quickly adapt to changing conditions.
The signs and symptoms produced by APC primarily effect the respiratory and circulatory system, and possess similarities to respiratory bubonic plague and hemorrhagic fevers such as dengue shock syndrome (DSS). Signs and symptoms typically present 7-10 days after initial exposure to the pathogen. Signs and symptoms include: fever, chills, cold sweats, coughing, shortness of breath, pallor, hemoptysis, hypotension, tachycardia, low platelet levels/low tissue thromboplastin levels, blood plasma leakage, and hemorrhages within the lungs/thoracic cavity in severe cases.
CDC and WHO investigations were able to reveal the index case of APC. Both organizations concluded that the earliest traceable case involved a 20 year old American girl named Jessica Martin. Jessica was a tall, thin white girl with wavy blonde hair, blue eyes, and fair skin. Jessica was very active in her church, and was in Nigeria as part of a month-long mission trip. Jessica didn't present with any symptoms while in Nigeria. Instead, she remained asymptomatic until 48 hours after returning home.
Jessica's initial complaints occurred 2 days after returning from her mission trip. Her initial complaints were fatigue and chills, but she attributed her symptoms to jet lag. Over the following 3 days, Jessica's condition grew increasingly worse. Coughing, fever, chills, severe fatigue, and shortness of breath developed, raising serious concerns from Jessica's family. Jessica visited her general practitioner and was diagnosed with the flu, and was unsuccessfully treated for such.
At the 7 day mark after her symptoms appeared, Jessica was only getting worse. She was running a high fever and she started coughing up blood. This prompted Jessica's mom to call 911. When EMS arrived on scene, Jessica was set up on a nasal cannula with high flow oxygen and 2 large bore IVs were set up, with normal saline being hung. Jessica's vital signs om scene were: BP 90/51, heart rate 132bpm, o2 saturation 95%, temperature 103.4°F.
During transport, Jessica was given vasopressors to increase her blood pressure and set her up on a portable heart monitor. While sticking the electrodes onto Jessica's chest, the medics reported large bruises (purpura) scattered across her chest, and petechia on the right forearm. With that discovery, the medics knew Jessica contracted something more serious than the flu.
Upon arrival at the emergency department, a battery of blood tests were ordered. Jessica's platelet levels were 110,000 per microlitre, nutrophils 20,000 per microlitre, basophils 6 per microlitre, lymphocytes 18,000 per microlitre, monocytes 900 per microlitre, eosinophils 400 per microlitre, ESR 28 mm/hr, hematocrit 21%, and blood culture tested positive for unknown gram-negative bacteria. Chest x-ray revealed fluid accumulation in both lungs, as well as pulmonary and tracheal edema. All of the test results raised a major red flag with the ER team, so Jessica's trauma room was quarantined, an infectious disease consultation was called for, and the personnel that were exposed to Jessica were required to wear additional PPE to potentially limit the spread of the unknown contagion.
The infectious disease specialist was confused as to what Jessica had. The bacteria from her blood cultures had the appearance of diphtheria, but the disease's signs and symptoms were more aligned with dengue shock syndrome and pneumonic plague. The infectious disease specialist decided to start Jessica on a 2 gram drip of ampicillin, and re-draw her labs in 4 hours to see if the medication is working. In the meantime, Jessica was given lasix to expel the excess fluid that was building up in her lungs and in her chest cavity.
Over the next few hours, Jessica began to deteriorate rapidly. She began crying hysterically and coughing up blood. “am I gonna die?!” asked a frightened Jessica as nurses began rushing into her quarantined room. Jessica continued to cough up blood and began having difficulty moving air. Tears rolled down her face as her mouth was being suctioned out. Jessica's blood pressure was tanking rapidly, causing her to shiver from feeling cold. “stay still honey.” One of the nurses said to the terrified young woman. A substantial nosebleed developed, and more bruises started to appear elsewhere on Jessica's body. The attending physician ordered 2 units of platelets and 2 units of FFP since it appeared Jessica was thrombocytopenic and on the verge of DIC.
Jessica lost consciousness shortly afterwards, so the team decided to intubate the 20 year old. Due to blood and swelling in the airway, conventional intubation proved to be impossible even after multiple attempts. As a result, it was decided that a surgical airway had to be placed.
Betadine was squirted onto Jessica's neck and a 2.5 cm vertical midline incision was made on the skin just above the cricothyroid membrane. Upon entry into the neck, a 1cm was made to cut through the underlying cricothyroid membrane. The scalpel was inserted into the incision area and turned at a 90° angle to create an adequate opening in the trachea itself. A size 5 tracheostomy tube was placed into Jessica's newly created surgical airway. The tube was held in place with a white cuff, and an ambu bag was attached.
Shortly after tube placement was confirmed, Jessica's oxygen saturation continued decreasing, so it was decided that bilateral chest tubes would be placed. Both chest tubes drained straw colored fluid with a red tinge to it, likely blood plasma, exudate, and trace amounts of whole blood. The tubes drained the fluid and her o2 saturation increased, but her BP and heart rate remained abnormal. Some of the fluid was sampled and sent off to the lab for additional testing.
Jessica's oxygen levels improved slightly, but her overall condition was deteriorating. Jessica's antibiotics weren't working, so she was given vancomycin, and additional units of platelets, FFP, and fluids were given. The team decided to get the CDC and state department of health involved since they didn't quite know what pathogen they were dealing with.
While waiting for the CDC and department of health officials to arrive, Jessica's condition gradually continued to worsen. One of the nurses paged a rapid response since Jessica's BP was dangerously low. The quarantined room then became filled with doctors and nurses in the coming minutes. Jessica developed new ecchymotic marks on her thighs and neck, showing that her platelet levels showed no signs of increasing. The tracheostomy tube was becoming clogged with exudate and blood plasma leakage, so the tube had to be suctioned out to keep the girl's airway intact. Moments after the tube was cleared of obstructions, Jessica became pulseless, converting to ventricular fibrillation.
ACLS protocol was initiated immediately. Deep, vigorous chest compressions were performed, the defibrillator pads were stuck onto the girl's bare chest, and the first rounds of epinephrine and atropine were injected intravenously. A 250j shock was delivered after a cycle of compressions. Jessica's body jolted violently on the table as the electricity raced through her dying body. The monitors continued displaying V-Fib, so a 300j shock was delivered after a cycle of CPR and ambu bagging. The 300j shock was just as ineffective as the first shock, so resuscitation efforts went on.
Jessica received harsh chest compressions, forcing her frail, skinny chest to cave in and her belly to bounce outwards. The heart monitors showed pulseless electrical activity, so CPR was the only course of action at that particular time. It took 4 minutes and another round of drugs to convert Jessica back to a shockable rhythm. The defibrillator pads were charged to 360j and a shock was promptly delivered. Jessica's feet kicked up just above the table, slamming back down a second later, showing off the prominent wrinkles throughout the soles of her size 9 feet.
ACLS protocol continued as Jessica went back into PEA after the unsuccessful shock. Her chest was being ravaged by the violent compressions the nurses delivered. A few of Jessica's ribs were broken, so there was swelling, redness, and bruising starting to form over the center of her chest. The tracheostomy tube started to fill up with blood, pus, and plasma leakage, blocking her airway once again. The breathing tube had to be suctioned out again, and she developed a sudden nosebleed. While the tube was being cleared, her IV ports started to fill with blood. The 6th units of platelets and FFP were hung, but it appeared Jessica was in full blown DIC.
Since the IV sites were compromised, an IO was drilled into Jessica's left tibia so drugs could still be administered. The next round of epinephrine and atropine were pushed, and the 1st round of bicarb was given. Larger amounts of blood leaked out of Jessica's nose, oozing down her cheeks. Her complexion was ghastly, her lips were pale, and she was cold to the touch.
Jessica's airway became almost impossible to maintain due to the large amounts of blood in the breathing tube. The suction made a slurping sound as it sucked up the copious amounts of blood from the dying girl's airway. While that was going on, Jessica just laid there motionless on the bed with her chest being pummeled repeatedly. Her head bobbed and her feet swayed slightly in sync with the compressions. The team continued their efforts, but Jessica's pupils were fixed and dilated and showed no signs of improvement. After 2 more shocks and 5 minutes of CPR, the team terminated their efforts and pronounced Jessica dead at 2:14pm.
The monitors were switched off and the ambu bag was detached. All of the electrodes and defib pads were removed and placed into a biohazard container because of the infectious disease Jessica carried. A toe tag was placed on the big toe of Jessica's left foot. Lastly, Jessica was placed into a special body bag and left in the quarantined ER room. The doctors and nurses slowly but surely left the room, disposing of their used PPE in red biohazard containers and washing their hands with special antimicrobial soap. As a safety precaution, all of the staff members who were exposed to Jessica were injected with immunoglobulins.
About 45 minutes after time was called on Jessica, the CDC and public health officials arrived at the hospital. The CDC retrieved Jessica's body and transported it to a nearby facility to conduct an autopsy and further investigation. The CDC and health department officials also did an examination of the doctors and nurses on Jessica's case, and took their contact information. The CDC wanted to follow up with them over the following weeks to make sure they didn't contract the disease.
Jessica's autopsy at the CDC lab confirmed that she died from an APC bacterial infection. Blood and tissue samples were taken for the purposes of research, and stored in a sterile, underground facility. Little did we all know, Jessica was just the first fatality of the APC epidemic. How many more will perish before we find a successful treatment?

Credit-By-Examination Tests Can Help You Finish College Faster
Written by Porrnutcha Jivasakapimas Published Jul 7, 2020 10:02 pm
Many people may be concerned about how I can finish my bachelor’s degree faster for many reasons — “I’m a reapplying student.”, I’d like to lighten my family’s load earlier.”, “I’d like to share my family’s work sooner.”, etc.—. But only taking the exceeding maximum of credits per semester/trimester might not be the right solution since you’ll have to work double hard and have decent time management to stuff many subjects in your class schedule. Here is another alternative that will help you gain credits for certain college subjects without needing to study such subjects for the whole semester/trimester. We Will Explore College Equivalency Exam ~ ~ ~

Advanced Placement examinations (AP exams)
(Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District, 2019)
Advanced Placement examinations (AP exams) are exams created by College Board, the same organization that produces SAT which is international university entrance exam. Betting all MUIC students who did not take direct exam must have taken SAT, so you guys might know about College Board. However, not many people know about AP exams since they do not arrange the tests frequently as SAT (7 times for U.S. and 4 times for international). AP exams only available annually which is around May. It can substitute many subjects we’re studying in college and is acceptable broadly (Even our university, MUIC, has accepted AP exam as well). AP exams often comes the format of multiple choices mostly with some short/long answers, depending on subjects. I recommend you take AP were you an MUIC student since MUIC receives AP and IB exams as a credit transfer, which can help accelerating your graduation.
Here is the full list of AP tests available. Take a look and if see if any subjects here match with subjects in you major, and considering taking it. You can register for AP as same as when you register for SAT. There are 38 exams in total:

College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
(Action Economics, 2014)
CLEP stands for College Level Examination Program. It’s more like GED tests, the testes where you take only 4 subjects, if passed, then you’d get a high school diplomat without having to go to the school for 3 year, doing any projects, or take midterms&finals. Sound convenient right? But CLEP isn’t exactly the same with GED. You cannot escape four years in a college even though you took CLEP. However, you can take some subjects that you hate (to go to the college to study it), and if you passed the CLEP exam of that subject you hate, that’s all. You don’t need to register to study such subject for the whole trimester. You can just transfer you score result and get the credits for that subject. No need to register for the course or enter any classes. This type of exams has both merit and pitfall when compared to its alternative, AP exams.
CLEP is better than AP that it is available year round. Just like GED, the exam is computer-based. So, you can appoint the test date in advanced and walk in to take the exams any day, anytime within the office hour that you’ve appointed. Since it’s internet-based exam, the score is calculated and reported immediately right after you finished. Nonetheless, CLEP isn’t as popular and broadly accepted as AP exams, and it’s testing centers are available only in foreign countries. Were you to take it, the nearest test center is at Dalat International School, Malasia. Apart from Webster University Thailand - Bangkok, I’ve never seen any other university in Thailand receives CLEP before, but talking about abroad universities, 2,900 colleges already granted/received CLEP.
Here are the sets of CLEP exams available via computer-based platform. It is arranged by 5 subject branches which are further divided into sub-subjects

DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST)
(DSST Credit by Exam Program, 2014)
DSST (formerly DANTES Subject Standardized Tests) are credit-by-examination tests originated by the United States Department of Defense's Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) program. The program is an extensive series of 33 examinations in college subject areas that are comparable to the final or end-of-course examinations in undergraduate college courses. These tests are frequently used in conjunction with CLEP (College Level Examination Program) tests by students pursuing college degrees in non-traditional formats. Whereas CLEP tests are almost exclusively used for lower level credit at regionally accredited institutions, DSST's are available for both upper and lower level credit.
Prometric administers Internet-based versions of DSSTs under contract with the Defense Department (for military personnel) or on a fee basis (for civilians).

Excelsior College Examinations (ECE)
(UExcel, 2013)
Excelsior College Examinations (or ECE) are a series of eight, three-credit nursing theory tests offered by Excelsior College in Albany, New York. The exams are supported by corresponding online courses. Excelsior also offers the Clinical Performance in Nursing Exam, a two-day practical skills exam, as a capstone to the associate degree in nursing.
Excelsior also offers over 50 UExcel exams in liberal arts, business, education, and science. Many colleges and universities will grant college credit for each test, although UExcel credit is not as widely accepted as CLEP and DSST.
The exam administration period is typically 3 hours and the tests currently cost between $110 and $335. Each exam usually corresponds to a one or two semester introductory or secondary course on the topic, and many exams provide upper-division credit. Most ECE exams are considered equivalent to 3 credits in the semester system.
ECE exams are offered through Excelsior College and are administered at Pearson VUE test centers.

the context
Dec 3-4, 8:31 am
Hello from a chronic extrovert (I’ve had many a debate about the usefulness of these American-produced descriptor words and the consequences of shoving people into predetermined categories). Yet I still consider myself an extrovert, like it’s just another freckle on my face after a long summer at the beach. And this extroversion has earned me the title of “wiz friend-maker.” A fortuitous skill in a graduate program centered around networking (I despise that whole concept). But I’ve reached a point where I’ve become so mired in sadness, confusion, anger, self-doubt, rupturing inside at times, and it all spills out, all over the people around me, my new, amazing grad school friends who I feel so close to but have only known for four months. I don’t really want to scare them away, so I thought it best to turn to an emotionless computer screen that won’t get fed up with my incessant bad vibes.
It’s a cycle. Every year it happens like this; normally centered around some sort of emotional turmoil surrounding a man in my life. I’m nearly two months into birth control - also not helping me very much.
~
This story will start with a man. A man who unexpectedly took my life by storm.
Fresh from a summer of working out, eating vegan, and looking and feeling undeniably beautiful, I was unstoppable my first few months of grad school. Even when imposter syndrome hit me hard like an unexpected slap in the face, I still felt like a conqueress. Walking and talking with confidence, making friends effortlessly, and also genuinely, an important point to mention. I felt like I was back at my privileged northern-Virginia high school, except this go-round everyone is popular and singing kumbaya through the halls. I had come to find a purpose in life, a path to wander (at a brisk, acceptable pace of course), a dream to strive for, and although it wasn’t quite clear to me yet (I’m not even halfway through my 20s), I knew I was on the way to finding it.
One day I went to a brunch. Amongst the shakshuka and foul, I experienced a rare moment of introversion while sitting in a neighbor’s home, hearing everyone around me speaking Spanish and convincing myself no one liked me. And there was one beautiful man who only exchanged a handful of words with me, and then seemingly lost interest. I was unaccustomed to feeling left out and began recalling moments from childhood defined by utter loneliness. The neighbor who had so graciously invited my roommates and me into his home on this lovely Saturday morning was the type of guy who makes an initial pass at every new woman he meets, just because he can. I was also in a stage of uncomfortably shying away from his advances, especially because my roommate seemed particularly interested at the time.
~
A few days later I asked the aforementioned neighbor for beautiful man’s number, partly to get neighbor off my back, and partly to alleviate the nagging annoyance in the back of my mind that I missed out on a potential friendship (hyper extrovert fomo, I know I know). I swiftly typed his number into my phone and shot him a message asking him to drinks. We agreed on Sunday night after his intramural soccer game. And so we met, and we chatted. About life, about Judaism, about soccer, about Chile and New York, about many topics that have already slipped my mind. It’s already been about two months since that night.
We decided to keep the night going, walking away from my house towards his after we finished dinner. It was already midnight and the target bar had long closed for the night. We just so happened to be across the street from his house, so we decided to go up to his place for tea and a smoke. Which turned into two hours of chatting on his couch.
As I prepared to leave, we stood up in unison, and he kissed me. Tiny electric sparks spread from my lips up my cheeks and down my neck, dancing along my spine to all the secret places that rarely feel this tingly, frantic sensation. That moment ended it all. I lost all faculties, which has led me into this deep, dark hole of confused, convoluted complexity.
~
Two months of joy, of the best physical connection I’ve ever experienced, of needing some sort of definition, reassurance from him after a certain point that we are together, that we are real, that this is committed, loving, healthy.
Some days we’re “together” in his mind, other days we’re some indescribable thing that leaves me feeling utterly alone in the worst way, the sort of way you feel alone in a crowded room, while the person you adore most is sitting right next to you.
So here are my options:
1) Deal with it. He sees no future because I’m too young, because we are in different phases of our lives, because I don’t understand his culture and I don’t speak his first language. In short - he doesn’t see a future with me, he doesn’t really want to be with me, and he doesn’t want to call himself my boyfriend because he’s tired of relationships that don’t last a long time. He’s looking for a forever love, and I’m not eligible for that title.
I have the option to never bring up anything regarding status or titles again and continue the way we have been going, because it’s true that over the past few months he’s slowly warmed, we’ve slowly built a real friendship despite going from 0-100 that first night. So there’s a possibility he would fall into an unexpected love with me if it happened subliminally, but I have no chill, so I feel like this option would tear me the fuck apart.
He doesn’t show interest in being with other women. When we are together, he is only looking at me. The underlying feelings are there. The potential is there. But most likely these possibilities will remain completely untapped because he has indefinitely shut me out from the possibility of becoming his everything.
But if I can chill, it could end peacefully one day and I could re-conceptualize all the time spent together not as a waste, but as an adventure. He fascinates me, his brain is amazing, and I adore him. If I could see him first and foremost as a person in my life who could be important, a meaningful friend in the future, then this could be beautiful regardless of status. If I could be confident enough to stand on my own and not let other people tear me apart, not let the past trauma of my brother dictate my current mental state, then this could be an amazing year with an amazing guy.
This would also require me to stop talking to all my friends about it, collecting their opinions. My roommates are my age - they are smart and want the best for me, but they don’t understand him. They don’t know what it’s like to be in your 30s, to feel like you want something real and sustainable. To feel that you no longer want to live in the “anything goes” mentality. Rather, you want to find someone who is also ready to settle down.
2) Be his friend. Keep talking, keep supporting, keep being there, being above the pain and confusion, possibly dealing with him being with other people, but remembering that I am the master of my own life and no man can dictate who I am or how I feel.
3) Nothing. Radio silence, like nothing ever happened between us.
But one thing is for sure: I need to retake control of my life, my emotions, my negative thoughts that are eating me alive. It must be my birth control, because this behavior is so ridiculously unlike me. I feel sick, confused, alone, heartbroken, sometimes I feel like I’m dying. Everything seems like the end of the world recently. So hopefully this tiny diary will be a breathe of fresh air. A place to sift through my thoughts.
We don’t get this time back. Life goes by, day by day, and we have no option but to deal with the daily emotions, events, people, that come to us. It’s up to us how we choose to react, to perceive even. One thing is absolutely certain - reframing my life at this point in time is crucial for my mental health. I have no choice, because I refuse to waste more time in a sickening, depressive haze.
Step 1: Work on the relationship I’m in with myself, not the one I’m semi-in with some unreliable man.

Before Rhode Island Built Its State House, a Racist Mob Destroyed the Community That Lived There
Photo of 1982 excavation at North Shore site Snowtown Project
On a pair of folding tables in the basement of the Public Archaeology Laboratory (PAL) in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, four metal trays display an unusual assemblage of artifacts. Humble ceramic tableware. Iron padlocks. Dominoes carved out of bone. A cut-glass tumbler. A diminutive bottle of French hair tonic. The headless body of a porcelain doll. A Spanish coin. A redware pot with drizzles of blue, black, yellow and green paint frozen in time on its sides.
These are the vestiges of Snowtown, a poor but vibrant mixed-race community that was once part of the state’s capital city, Providence. Moreover, it stood on the grounds where the state’s imposing capitol building now sits. Though no visible traces of the neighborhood remain, its history—including a deadly mob attack in 1831—is now being resurrected by the Snowtown Project.
The initiative began as an outgrowth of a Rhode Island State House Restoration Society subcommittee that was tasked with telling lesser-known stories about the capitol building and its grounds. Marisa Brown, who chairs the subcommittee and is an adjunct lecturer at Brown University’s John Nicholas Brown Center for Public Humanities and Cultural Heritage, says, “There’s a disconnect between the accuracy of what happened in the past and what our landscapes tell us. There are just too many places that we have lost.”
1849 map of Providence, Rhode Island. Snowtown stood just north of the Cove, near the center of the map.

In 2019, the subcommittee emailed colleagues to gauge interest in researching Snowtown. Over the course of three meetings, a handful of people blossomed first into a group of 30 and now a cohort of more than 100 historians, archivists, archaeologists, teachers, storytellers, artists and community members.
After the American Revolution, Rhode Island experienced rapid population growth driven by the international “Triangle Trade”—of enslaved people, sugar products and spirits—through the port of Providence. The state’s distilleries had a special knack for turning imported sugarcane and molasses from the West Indies into rum, which was traded for enslaved labor. But by the 1830s, as the population surpassed 16,000, the manufacturing of textiles, jewelry and silverware had supplanted the merchant trade as the city’s primary economic driver.
The state’s Gradual Emancipation Act of 1784 had allowed children born to enslaved women to be freed once they reached adulthood. Within decades, a new population of free Black people had emerged, but they, along with indentured servants, Indigenous people, immigrants and impoverished white people, were pushed into marginalized communities. Many of these groups were denied the opportunity to work in the burgeoning manufacturing industry.
They lived in places like Snowtown, a settlement of shabby homes and businesses with little in the way of conveniences. It was home to between two and three dozen households, but the population ebbed and flowed. Some residents toiled as domestic servants in the homes of Providence’s elite, or in trades like carpentry and sewing. The most successful owned small businesses or boarding houses. Even for the latter, life in Snowtown was difficult.

Pollution in Providence made conditions even worse. The Great Salt Cove, a tidal estuary that had been significant to local Indigenous tribes, just below the sandy bluff where Snowtown was located, became a dumping ground for sewage and industrial waste. Real estate in the village was undesirable; rents were cheap; and “disreputable” businesses aimed at sailors coming through port—brothels, saloons and dance halls—proliferated.
In 1831, sailors newly arrived from Sweden aboard the steamer Lion started a brawl at a tavern in Olney’s Lane, a neighborhood adjacent to Snowtown that was also home to an assemblage of non-white communities. According to an account in the Rhode Island American and Gazette, the sailors gathered reinforcements and attacked a home occupied by “blacks of a dissolute character.” Two Black men fired on the sailors, slaying one and wounding three. The white mob, shouting “Kill every negro you can!” advanced uphill into Snowtown, where the shooter was believed to had fled.
Over the course of four days, 18 buildings in Snowtown and Olney’s Lane were damaged or destroyed. Eventually, the state militia, ill-equipped to handle the scene, fired to disperse the mob, killing four.
Though residents rebuilt, by the late 1800s, Snowtown and its Black residents had been displaced by industrial progress. Rhode Island had grown into the wealthiest state per capita. In part as a monument to its prestige, the state commissioned renowned architects McKim, Mead & White, of Pennsylvania Station and New York Public Library renown, to design a massive State House on the bluff above Great Salt Cove. Construction was completed in 1904.

Today, all traces of Snowtown and its sister communities are obscured beneath railroad tracks, a small park commemorating state founder Roger Williams, and the ornate neoclassical capitol and its rolling green lawns.
Still, says Chris Roberts, a Snowtown Project researcher and an assistant professor at Rhode Island School of Design, “If you’re researching slavery in Providence, Snowtown comes up. If you’re looking at the history of women in Providence, Snowtown shows up. If you’re looking into the city as a commercial hub, it comes up. Snowtown is a character in so many different histories of the city.”
Uncovering Snowtown has not been without challenges. For starters, the record is incomplete. Census data, for example, documents the names of heads of households, with only numbers to indicate women and children. “We often have to grapple with these archival silences,” says Jerrad Pacatte, a Snowtown research committee member and a PhD candidate at Rutgers University. “These were people who were not considered worthy of being counted.”
Physical evidence of entrepreneurship, creativity and personal care persist in a collection of about 32,000 artifacts. The artifacts were unearthed, and about 30 percent cataloged, in the early 1980s, when the Federal Railroad Administration undertook rail-improvement projects in the Northeast, including in Providence.

According to Heather Olson, the lab manager for PAL and a Snowtown Project researcher, the materials were then archived and shipped to what is now the Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission. They remained there for 35 years, largely untouched, save for a few inquiries related to doctoral theses and a small exhibit in 1988; those items subsequently went missing.
The remaining artifacts were turned over to the PAL in 2013. The organization has digitally cataloged the entire collection—everything from writing slate and pencils to crucibles for metal working, woodworking tools and children’s toys. (Some of these digitized objects will hopefully be publicized online when the project is completed.)
Kitchen items are the most common, and they reflect a curious intermingling of status. Alongside unadorned plates and servingware, the collection includes pricey Blue Willow transferware, Chinese porcelain and an 18th-century feldspathic stoneware teapot. Olson says, “I don’t know if these arrived as clean fill from somewhere, if it was something bought secondhand, or if this was something that had been given to the people”—for example, to a domestic servant employed by the city’s wealthy.
Other artifacts give clues about the residents’ health. The large number of bottles for digestive tonics, for instance, speaks to the contaminated nature of the water supply. For Olson, the collection is an opportunity to examine a hidden history. “What can you identify? What can you say about people who were, for the most part, invisible?” she says.
If the complex work of the Snowtown Project shines a spotlight on a single truth, it’s that “written history belongs to the winners,” says Joanne Pope Melish, a retired University of Kentucky historian; the author of Disowning Slavery: Gradual Emancipation and “Race” in New England, 1780–1860; and co-chair of the project’s research committee.
“History, and the doing and the telling of history, is a product of the politics of the moment in which the telling of the story is happening and of the moment in which the story took place,” she explains.

White supremacy was alive and well above the Mason-Dixon Line. Newly freed African American people traded the physical oppression of enslavement for the societal oppression of classism and historical effacement. Mentions of Snowtown are infrequent in contemporaneous newspapers. They begin to reemerge only in the 1960s, as the civil rights movement brought the neighborhood back into public consciousness.
This awareness has accelerated over the past decade, in direct response to the Black Lives Matter movement. Modern media retellings of vanished histories have also helped, such as the episode of HBO’s “Watchmen” that dramatized the events of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre.
Before Tulsa, according to Pope Melish, white mobs attacked northern Black neighborhoods 144 times between 1820 and 1850. While the Oklahoma attack was far deadlier, these assaults present two sides of the same coin. Pope Melish says, “It parallels the impossibility of being a ‘perfect’ enslaved person or free person of color. If you’re poor, you’re disgusting. If you’re successful, you’re uppity. Both cause hostility.”
Traci Picard, a public historian who co-chairs the Snowtown Project research team, has been working to unearth personal histories. She has sifted through thousands of seemingly mundane materials, including writs and warrants—an early version of small-claims court. “Every single thing is built by someone,” she says. “I don’t mean designed by someone, or who gets the credit for building it. Every single block, every single brick, every single building—we’re surrounded by people’s lives and experiences and stories.”
Planning is underway to present those stories in an exhibition at the State House, as well as a digital publication featuring maps, photos and documents. Snowtown History Walks debuted in June, and public art installations and signage for self-guided tours are also being discussed.
Playwright and actor Sylvia Ann Soares, a programs team member and a Cape Verdean descendant of the Portuguese slave trade in Providence, is working on a Snowtown-themed play set to premiere next year. She believes that involvement of artists in the earliest stages of the project is integral to its retelling. “The results will be richer,” she says. “Many people will not read a scientific journal or go to a talk, but if it’s dramatic, if there’s some music, some songs of that era, it brings it alive.”
Soares adds, “I intend to [use the play to] speak out as an inspiration for advocacy against present-day injustice.”
For Pacatte, it’s also an opportunity to broaden our understanding of a part of American evolution that has been swept under the carpet of white history. “Snowtown is a microcosm for the very messy and prolonged process of emancipation that people in the North experienced before the Civil War,” he says. “It’s the story of African Americans [in the U.S.]: They were resilient and kept rebuilding their lives.”
