Writing Patterns

Rules: List the first line of your last 10 (posted) fics and see if there’s a pattern!

Thanks for the fun tag, @perverse-idyll!

1. It’s a grim little thing, the Sorting Hat thinks as she walks up to the dais.

[Hag Tales, HP, Minerva/Amelia, Minerva/Alastor, Minerva/Wilhelmina. The reader's introduction to Miss Minerva McGonagall, as seen through a variety of lenses, including the Sorting Hat's. Yikes!]

2. The body remembers.

[De Aegypto, Minerva/Rolanda. The frame for a short piece about Minerva's musings on Rolanda and their complicated relationship.]

3. The first time Florean Fortescue met Severus Snape, he was mid-charm, putting the finishing touches on his latest creation.

[The Ice Cream Man and the Potions Master, Florean/Severus (pre-slash). A little scene-setting for an episodic piece in which Severus alternately confounds and charms Florean Fortescue.]

4. "Imperio."

[Rest with Your Dream in My Dream, Minerva/Severus. A line stolen from canon, as were many of the lines from this piece in which I attempt to add a little backstory to some of the key scenes in the HP books. This one from the scene where Minerva (needlessly) Imperios Amycus Carrow.]

5. Mind the gap between the train and the platform.

[Mind the Gap, Minerva/Severus. A somewhat contrived frame for this short piece about the ramifications of the age-gap between lovers Minerva and Severus. Also, I had recently returned from London.]

6. What the hell am I doing here?

[Within a Forest Dark, Minerva/Severus. A question I think Severus must have asked himself several times per day. A little tunnel into the main character's mind.]

7. The children filed into the classroom, quieter than they’d ever be again, Albus knew. The first-years were always a little awed by their first day at Hogwarts.

[One to Keep an Eye On, Albus, Minerva. Some scene-setting for a short piece about how Albus and Minerva first met.]

8. Thorfinn McGonagall sat in his study answering some of the many letters of condolence that continued to pour in two months after his wife’s death, when a shriek from somewhere on a floor above pulled him out of his chair.

[From Jupiter's Head, OC, Minerva, Albus. A somewhat ham-fisted attempt to provide a bit of (canon-divergent) backstory for Minerva, introducing both her father and her magical prowess.]

9. Anyone who’d spent any time at all at Number 12 Grimmauld Place in the past weeks would not have been surprised to see an identical pair of ginger heads creeping down a creaky staircase at ten minutes past one o’clock on a July morning.

[The Perils of Eavesdropping. Fred, George, Alastor/Minerva. Distanced narrative-setting for a short, (hopefully) humorous piece.]

10. If anyone had asked the Reverend Robert Fingal McGonagall ten years ago what he’d be doing on the third Saturday of Advent in the year of our Lord 1990, he might have laid even odds on “thumbing the harp wi’ the angels.”

As far as patterns go, I'd say I tend to open with short, simple phrases, often internal dialogue splashed right up front without any context. Since my stories tend to be character-driven pieces (fanfic, ya know?), I like to get into my characters' heads ASAP. It's a little odd, given that my overall narrative style leans (too) heavily on complex compound sentences. Or, it seems, I sometimes go in the opposite direction, opening with a line that establishes a more distanced narrative, sort of a birdseye POV, if you will.

Hello anon! I love your enthusiasm!

We just came back from a little hiatus over the holidays so right now things are a little slow, but we just dropped the first part of a two part event and we have lots of new writers and muses so things should be picking up soon! Although, while activity is important, the health of our writers comes first so rather than activity checks we have switched over to monthly interest checks so there isn't as much pressure on our writers.

We would honestly LOVE to see anybody, but I think right now we're a little lacking in the Death Eater department. I'd love to see any of the Lestranges, Amycus Carrow, Fenrir Greyback or the Weasleys!

With his head tilted he furrowed his brows for a moment. "Oh you never know who is listening in," he mused. At the comment he righted his head before laughing once more. The other man must not have figured out that the twins talked about everything. He knew more about other men than most thought, but he loved it. He loved those sleepovers with his sister where they spilled everything. "Even if she did, it would take more than that to bother me." As soon as there were nails digging into his skin he couldn't help but lean into the pain. Now this is what he was talking about. Being up close he slipped an arm around the other's back. His other hand moved to grasp Antonin's moving it to the front of his neck. "It looks far better here you know. Too bad you are all talk and no show."

Amycus didn't move away from him though. Instead he leaned closer thinking about his next actions for a second. "I wonder how your skin feels against my teeth," he muttered a second later.

He fully ignored the question, thinking about his own statement.

Antonin found it entertaining that Amycus figured he would scare people off at Alecto's bar. He understood how much that bar meant to the witch. "I don't think asking her a simple question, quietly, would harm anyone." The smirk remains on his features. "Unless, you really don't want to hear that you sister calls me Daddy." There were times where he had fucked Alecto in that very bar when people were gone, or in her office, with people in. He liked a good adrenaline chase.

A hand reaches down to grab at the back of Amycus' neck, digging his nails into flesh and pulls his body flush with his, his own madness flashing in his, one that liked to give a good show. "If I wanted you on your knees, Amycus." A growl in his tone, whispering in the boys ear. "I would by now, here in the middle of the street." He had no boundaries. "You have to show me you deserve it." With that he lets go once more, allowing them to remain close.

Amycus might have just been crazy enough to do exactly what she was talking about. He never much cared for how others saw him, because if they wanted proper well that just wasn't the case. He did everything in order to be anything but that.

He did smile though, glancing at the containers with no label. "Well, what is life without a little adventure?" He had done far worse and put far worse in his mouth before. "I do like creamy things though," he mused softly. How she took it was up to her. "What else is he experimenting with?"

THE BUZZING OF A CROWD and constant foot traffic was enough to keep the witch busy, the former auror found herself, in between her father and eldest brother and a vast array of ice-cream containers surrounded them. this was home, in a way at the very least the home that had come as a result of all the chaos and insecurity that had once loomed over the entire wix population. and so she smiled, tending to orders as fast as she could and realizing that she still REMEMBERED some old favorites, the act alone bringing a smile to her features as she realized that remembering someone's order still worked to make ' someone's day. ' and once upon a time? well that had been all alice needed. " considering that i'm workin... " her voice trailed as doe eyes landed on the ginger man before her. " wouldn't be all that becoming, if i were to stick a spoon in OPEN containers, meant for customers. " she mused with a quirk of her brow, small arms folding across her chest, the right holding onto an ice-cream scoop. " but if you're in the mood for an adventure... " she gestured towards the unlabeled containers in a corner. " pop's been experimenting, ever wondered what... roast beef tastes like when it's creamy? "
