New technology boosts Parks Photo Competition entries
Entries for Belfast City Council’s Parks Photo Competition have been boosted by mobile technology as entrants take even more opportunities to capture beautiful, quirky or fun pictures in our city parks.
Technology means entrants can capture pictures in a moment and more and more people are using it to capture exciting and artistic photos for the competition which attracts entries from Belfast and beyond.
This year the Parks Photo Competition celebrates its 10th anniversary and to celebrate, a prize presentation took place at Malone House where the winning photographs were on display. They will also be used by the council for future communications and publications.
Alderman Tommy Sandford, chair of the People and Communities Committee, said: “I was as impressed as the judges by the wonderful photos that were submitted and am sorry that we can’t get to display each and every one.
“Today’s successes are the most outstanding in each of the four categories and I want to congratulate everyone who has won,” he added.
The annual competition is sponsored by John McQuillan (Contracts) Ltd who provided the prize money and this year for the first time Jessops Belfast provided canvases of each of the winning images and a photography workshop for each of the four category winners.
In the ever popular under 16’s category the overall winner was Abi Lopes from the south of the city, but east Belfast siblings Robbie and Amy Cooper celebrated together after taking second and third place.
Our new category Summertime in Parks was won by Tara O’Brien from Hillsborough, while entries by Antrim residents William Allen and Malcolm Moorehead took second and third place.
Active Parks was won by Belfast man Niall Boyle; second place was taken by Angus White also from Belfast and Dunmurry resident Aoife Britten took third prize.
Carrickfergus woman, Grace Hamilton, won the Park Landscapes title while Belfast residents Paul Elliot and Colin White were the runners-up.
More information on the results and winning pictures are available to see at www.belfastcity.gov.uk/parkphotocompetition

Krakauer
Jon Krakauer’s written some pretty famous books. He’s probably best-known for Into Thin Air and Into the Wild, but the Krakauer book I own is titled Under the Banner of Heaven. It’s a tough book to read because it’s about faith-based violence; notably, the 1984 Lafferty murders in which two Mormons said they received revelations from God to murder their sister-in-law and her infant.
As far as religions go, Mormonism is fairly young (started in the 1820s), but it’s one of the most popular religions nowadays. In fact, projected numbers state that it will be known as a major world religion (along with the top 5, which are currently Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and folk religions) in the next 100 years. Like many man-made religions it follows certain teachings and texts, but the truth is that unless someone grows up knowing the history of the Mormon church, there are a lot of things your average Joe has no idea are even part of the religion.
Krakauer, who was not religious at the time he wrote the book (I have no idea what his status is now) took a journalistic approach to understanding what kind of religion could possibly prompt someone to say they murdered in the name of God for no apparent reason. This is different from holy wars like the Crusades and religious persecution like what’s going on in the world now. He’s taking a look at very specific doctrines and beliefs that would lead anyone to think it was okay to murder someone if they thought God told them to.
Krakauer is a great writer. The book is chock-full of facts but is interesting to read. It’s intense, though. I found myself reading a few chapters and then needing a “break” because it was tough to fathom that things like this really happen in the world for this reason. I appreciate the way Krakauer goes to the root of the problem, however. He takes the ideals all the way back to their inception, from their very first appearance, and shows the evolution of ideas that followed. A lot of it is reading history (which is fine by me, obviously) but a lot of it is present-day, too.
In fact, remember back in the Js when I wrote about Escape, by Carolyn Jessop? A lot of what she went through is connected to Krakauer’s work. There are lots of the same instances and lots of the same people mentioned, so that really brought everything together for me. It’s incredible that this is happening and no one seems bothered by it.
Naturally the Mormon church was outraged by this book and released several public responses to it. However, in 2015 Amy Berg released a documentary titled Prophet’s Prey, about the FLDS leader Warren Jeffs (who was instrumental in Carolyn Jessop’s life). When Berg did this documentary, Krakauer was an active participant and the documentary gained a lot of attention. That may have something to do with the fact that Ron Howard worked on it, but hey.
Under the Banner of Heaven is also going to be a movie coming up. Ron Howard is directing the movie as well. I’m honestly not sure if I want to see it or not...but all in all, I probably will.
It stays!
