Since I am on a book kick, I was thinking of the best way Iâve seen OTP switch/love triangle resolved and itâs in Amy Bartolâs Second Born trilogy - a YA dystopian setting series I adore tho the world building is shoddy. The characters are amazing tho!
Anyway, Roselleâs initial OTP is Hawthorne (who is awesome and a fellow soldier) but then she starts having interactions with Reykin who is a rebel blah blah and I got so freaking confused in terms of shipping (tho I loved FL so much I wanted her with whoever she wanted to be) and then it all ended up perfectly shipping-wise. Because I sometimes joke I wish I could clone the apex of a triangle and hi novel finally doing it. But! It totally made sense why one picked Hawthorne and one Reykin. Because their narratives diverged. The cloning happened early enough that Roselle was still very much in love with Hawthorne and then they got stuck in basically hell for a while and it cemented it meanwhile the âmainâ Roselle had all that stuff with Reykin and anyway itâs a space opera go gonzo use all the space opera stuff and stories never do but one finally takes advantage of it woooo!

Egy måra diszfunkcionålis pótszeres antiszociålis rémålmai
Part XI: Bleeding out
Ahh shit, here we go again.
Worst place in the world to be at: Another lonely anniversary.
Wish I could be laid back and keep up the act of the goofy gangsta.
Wish I could keep up the act of the generous geek.
Wish I could stop, get relief from a freak
Loved until an orgasm burned till everything's all bleak
I hold my gat in my on face on my profile pic
I write rhymes when music aint meaning shit. I better stop;
I dont bother. Fuck you all, no lover anymore no brother. No sister, no shorty, no princess of mine. No family no place to call home no more fucking fight.
The cause is lost.
My corpse got threw away. I wish I've been dead in fucking May.
I tried my hardest to join 27 Club. I almost made it, but there was no Heaven...
There was no Hell.
No light no Hellhounds.
Just the remains of my shattered fucking mind.
My body is half dead theres no fuckin doubt.
LOOK IN AND AT MY FUCKING EYES
Asymmetric. Binary inside.
I'm tired and dead. No laghter no cry.
I hate every fucking compliment they ever received. My blue fucking googles cant see, I'm decieved. Evey day I believe all fucking lies: dreams, hope, love that dough buys.
I tried. It does not buy shit. Except hard drugs.
Yeah, sup want smth? No closure.
I hope it feels fucking bad I butcher this whole weak verse. Nem bohĂłckodok mĂĄr ezzel. A faszom legyen rapper, a gitĂĄros palira mentek mindig a csajok akik kellettek.
A mictól, a pipetól, a pullup bartol. Vagy hogy ne érezze mår ha érintést kap måstól. Elhiszem hogy szar velem lenni, mer én se szeretek. Mostansåg a vénåmba is vasst beverek.
Nem alszok.
Nem eszek.
Nincs esti mese gyerekek. Volt, de rĂĄgondolva a szĂvem bereped. A narrĂĄtor bereked, a fĆhĆs nyekereg.
IsmĂ©t faszkalap rĂmraktĂĄrt tereget.
Stop it already! Write like you used to..
How I used to? Yeah..drunk and depressed. Fuck that!
You forgot the pills.
I didn't bitch! I just ran out. Why?
Because it's a waste of time.
Because you abuse them so much. Full circle.
I want a circle pointed at my fucking mug.
BAM!
I should chill prolly. But thats not an option. Because I cant. My nervous system is ruined. If I try to nap I'm shaken awake.
Bennem a tél nyår lett, a nyår meg a tél. Råmolvad az alvadt vér és råmég a dér.
A faszom se fél..se nem åll mer a senkire vår. Nincs semmilyen kurva kapu ami nekem nyitva åll.
Csak Mitragyne. Ăpium a bye.

Roselle St. Sismode
Fated Sword
So yesterday I read the final book in the secondborn trilogy, Rebel Born. I was disappointed in the way the story turned out, with its alternate universe and impossible ~science~. It wasnât so hard to believe in the first and second books. I still love Roselle and Reykin though. *Wipes tears for otp*
Honestly, Cherno was the best thing to happen. My favourite angry dragon man.

Secondborn
by Amy A. BartolÂ
Honestly, this is one of the most reductive things I have ever read. It was just what you would expect from a dystopian young adult book in what could be a really cool world/society, but wasnât developed enough to be great. Everything was 200% predictable; from the rebellion, to the romance. This book had such a great premise and could not follow through.
Rating: 1.5/5
Summary from Goodreads:
Firstborns rule society. Secondborns are the property of the government. Thirdborns are not tolerated. Long live the Fates Republic. On Transition Day, the second child in every family is taken by the government and forced into servitude. Roselle St. Sismodeâs eighteenth birthday arrives with harsh realizations: sheâs to become a soldier for the Fate of Swords military arm of the Republic during the bloodiest rebellion in history, and her elite firstborn mother is happy to see her go. Televised since her early childhood, Roselleâs privileged upbringing has earned her the resentment of her secondborn peers. Now her decision to spare an enemy on the battlefield marks her as a traitor to the state. But Roselle finds an allyâand moreâin fellow secondborn conscript Hawthorne Trugrave. As the consequences of her actions ripple throughout the Fates Republic, can Roselle create a destiny of her own? Or will her Fate override everything she fights forâeven love?
What I liked:
-The notion of Firstborns and Secondborns as well as the realization that relegating an entire people to servitude based on an arbitrary characteristic would eventually lead to rebellion. Had the potential for something great. [Reminded me of Margaret Peterson Haddixâs Among the Hidden which I remember loving when I was growing up.]
What I didnât like:
-The characters are flat, two-dimensional, and read more like stock characters necessary to fulfill a role. Roselle is too much of a hot commodity that can do no wrong. Hawthorne is too much of a sexy, bad boy with no real personality traits other than trying to get into Roselleâs pants. The bad guys are bad. The rich and privileged are rich and privileged. Everyone fit their stereotype exactly.
-DONâT EVEN get me started on the insta-romance. Like how creepy is it that heâs âbeen in loveâ with her from watching her life on a 24/7 feed and feeling like he knows her and is âsurprisedâ when she does other things (like use the bathroom??, not exaggerating). And for her to be instantly attracted to him where he becomes her safe spot immediately without having to earn it. wow.Â
-Spoiler (?): Thereâs a scene where Roselle is standing in the middle of the locker room, shaving her legs. Apparently, only the firstborns or supermodels shave their legs and everyone else in that locker room was completely taken aback and entranced by her in a towel, shaving. The girls were somewhat disgusted or jealous and the boys were all drooling. And when sheâs told that most women soldiers donât shave, she is instantly apologizing and asking if theyâll thing itâs gross. I donât even know what to do with this. Performative femininity at itâs finest.
-Everything just fell into place, even when things went wrong, there was always a reason for it. The solutions just sort of presented themselves. Part of it was supposed to be about these unknown powers pulling strings the protagonist didnât know about, but it was definitely very contrived. Even the twist about who was supposedly pulling the strings was a little too...ehh.Â
-There were a lot of holes in the timeline, a lot of days and weeks where nothing happened but we donât see much development in anything. The plot is all or nothing and it messes up the pacing, making the action scenes that much more predictable. Just because there was no action happening doesnât mean we donât want to read about the day-to-day to get to know our characters or the world they live in.Â

Kricket Series - Amy A Bartol
Nonononononononono You're kidding me, you actually have to be kidding me! What in the ever living hell was that? There is absolutely no promise of a fourth book, before you read this you need to know that and you need to know that you will be desperate for one. *mild spoiler* Amy A. Bartol has a very loose interpretation of HEA *mild spoiler over* so if you don't think you can handle that I might not start this series, had I known I probably wouldn't have but at the same time I'm really glad I did because until the last line and the realisation that THIS WAS IT, I really loved it, even the parts I didn't want to love... ~oops~ because yeah there are some guilty pleasure moments that had my inner feminist fighting a huge battle with my inner lover of bad guys turned good so yeah maybe I had a crush on who I wasn't supposed to, don't get me wrong if someone ever tried that shit on me IRL they'd be dead. But in a book boyfriend... it's kinda super sexy? I am both unashamed and super crazy ashamed of myself so... there's that. I guess it helps that kricket is pretty feminist so it's not like this is an anti feminist book... it's just has some kinda awful moments that are somehow super attractive and I'm gonna shut up now before I hurt myself. Yes a few things felt a little cringey and I had some second hand embarrassment but hear me out and ignore them because overall I really loved this series and I WOULD KILL FOR A BOOK FOUR... but ignoring that, it was good, I liked it, you should read it, and you should not blame me for how much your heart will break when it finishes... you've been warned. Who I recommend this book to: people who can handle the possibility of an only-sorta-kinda HEA that will make you sad, with no guarantee that that won't be the end... Bartol has spoken about maybe sorta kinda continuing on and I hope she does but she has specifically made no promises. I give this 4.5/5 roses đč I understand the ending, I do and I love it and respect it but I also really want to punch this series in the face... if she writes a fourth book this will probably magically morph into a 5 (which it honestly deserves to be I'm just bitter)

Just thought I'd share a glorious find with everyone. I purchased this entire trilogy for only $2.97 on my kindle :) She is a fantastic author and keeps you engaged. Even though I won't start this right away, I often check my kindle library store to see if any of my favorite authors have books on sale. I got Sarah J Maas's Throne of Glass series (eight books) for only $5.99 compared to the retail price of $48-$60 for the Kindle.
