LGBQ Count
A couple warnings
Most of these pilots will not be picked up to series
We didn’t say “LGBTQ” because to the best of our knowledge there are no trans characters or actors
We may well have missed some “out” actors- if we did, please feel free to tell us so
This current count of characters only takes into account characters whose attraction to the same sex was made explicit in their descriptions (or in the cases of Greatest American Hero and The Finest, a script preview)
We only used labels (lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer) where such terms were used by the descriptions
We may have underestimated; if you have evidence to suggest so, please share it.
Please do not reblog this if it is in the interest of complaining about “political correctness” or to claim LGBTQ people are overrepresented in the media- you would be wrong. And not just politically.
This was originally posted Apr 11; it was updated Apr 14 to add the character of Ella (The Finest); it was updated Apr 22 to add the character of Michael (Roswell); it was updated Apr 24 to add actor Nik Dodani and Apr 30 to add actor Haaz Sleiman
CHARACTERS
How May We Hate You? (ABC): The male lead of this show, Gabe, will be “lovable, funny, and altruistic,” and “worried that he’s getting too old for the already cutthroat gay dating scene.” From descriptions, the show seems like a snarkier, younger take on “Will & Grace” where they work in the hospitality industry, so while there may be a concern of fitting too much into the “gay best friend” trope, Gabe at least will be a lead character. He will be portrayed by Jason Michael Snow, whose previous work has primarily been in theatre- his “Grace” will be played by Kat Dennings (of 2 Broke Girls fame).
Most Likely To (ABC): This Yvette Nicole Brown-starrer will feature a “fabulous” gay man, Dante, who works at Markie’s (Brown) salon as a hairdresser and “is the perfect friend when she needs to vent.” The role will be played by Max Jenkins, an out gay actor.
Steps (ABC): Julie Hagerty will play June, the mother of Louie (presumably one of the main male characters), who “has recently gotten in touch with her Sapphic side.” Notably, Hagerty is in her early sixties, and few Sapphic women of that age are visible in fiction.
The Greatest American Hero (ABC): According to Season Zero’s pilot preview, the character Max, described as “a new account executive at the agency who doesn’t get [the lead’s] humor,” will be gay and come out to the lead Meera (played by Hannah Simone) in a “quite funny” way in the pilot. The character will be played by Humphrey Ker.
Untitled Barris Project (ABC): This pilot has been pushed off-cycle. It was originally developed as a starring vehicle for Alec Baldwin, whose departure from the project has led to its delay, as a “fading TV star who moves in with his progressive daughter, her girlfriend and the child they are raising together.” As such, there would be a woman/woman couple at the center of the show. We’ll update this once any new casting information is released.
The Finest (ABC): According to Season Zero’s pilot preview, the character Ella, one of the five central sisters who are all members of the NYPD, might be having an affair with a woman- while this is obviously a bit unclear, we have decided to include her in this list.. The character has been married to a man for 18 years and has three children. She will be played by Amirah Vann.
Main Justice (CBS): This series, based on the life of former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and set at the Department of Justice, will feature Aubrey Dollar as Ellis, the A.G.’s Chief of Staff. She will be “recently divorced from her wife, with whom she has a young son” and have been highly recommended by the President.
Red Line (CBS): This project from gay mega-producer Greg Berlanti (and Ava DuVernay, too) is about the aftermath of a white Chicago cop shooting and killing a black doctor. The doctor in question will be a gay man, whose death leaves behind his husband Daniel (played by Noah Wyle) and their daughter Jira. One of Daniel’s teacher coworkers, Liam (played by Indian-American actor Vinny Chhibber) will also be openly gay and help Daniel and Jira through the grieving process. *An aside: Gay audiences might be interested to know that Noel Fisher, best known for Mickey Milkovich on Showtime’s Chicago-set Shameless, will play the cop who shot Daniel’s husband.
Charmed (CW): The middle sister witch, Mel, played by Melonie Diaz, will be an “outspoken activist and strong-willed feminist” whose girlfriend Nico, played by Ellen Tamaki, is a detective. This will be a Latina/ East-Asian interracial relationship. (The gif below is Diaz in another role opposite a different actress)
Roswell (CW): This reboot will feature Pretty Little Liars’ Tyler Blackburn as Sergeant Alex Manes, a veteran returning from the Middle East who “aims to adhere to his father’s expectations, abandoning his dreams and the possibility of a future with the man he loves.” The man he loves, according to the Season Zero Pilot Preview, will be another main character, Michael, played by Michael Vlamis. Both of these characters’ sexualities are a departure from the book series and first television adaptation, in which they were both love interests for the female character Isobel. (The gif below is of Blackburn)
Spencer (CW): The best-friend of the titular character (who is inspired by NFL linebacker Spencer Paysinger), Tiana “Coop” Cooper will be a gay woman who struggles to fit in at Crenshaw High and relies on Spencer for protection, yet still supports him when he leaves for a new opportunity in Beverly Hills. She will be played by Bre-Z, whose breakout role came as Freda Gatz on Empire.
Tally By Identity:
7 gay men: Gabe, Dante, Max, unnamed doctor in Red Line, Daniel, Liam, Michael
1 undeterminable mlm: Alex Manes
1 gay woman: Coop
7 undeterminable wlw: June, 2 Untitled Barris ladies, Ella, Ellis, Mel, Nico
1 (dead) black man, 2 black women, 1 Indian man, 1 Japanese woman, 1 Puerto Rican woman, 6 white men, 2 white women, 2 undetermined women
Tally by Network:
ABC: 7 characters across 6 shows (out of 23 total pilots; 5 out of 10 comedies, 1 out of 13 dramas); 3:4 men to women
CBS: 4 characters across 2 shows (out of 18 total pilots; 2 out of 10 dramas- no comedies); 3:1 men to women; please note that one of these men will die immediately
CW: 5 characters across 3 shows (out of 10 total pilots/presentations); 3:2 women to men
FOX & NBC: 0, across 11 and 15 pilots respectively
ADDITIONAL ACTORS
Murphy Brown (CBS): A new regular to the revival, actor Nik Dodani is a gay Indian-American. He will play the role of Pat and, as of yet, there is no news on his character’s sexuality.
Cool Kids (FOX): Although there is no news on his character Sid’s sexuality, iconic gay actor Leslie Jordan will play one of the four leads in this series about a retirement community that’s “high school with 70 somethings.”
Gone Baby Gone (FOX): Although there is no news on his character Remy’s sexuality, gay actor Haaz Sleiman, who is Muslim, will play a “cocky yet charming detective.” In the original book his character was married to a woman with whom he had an adopted child.
No Way Back (NBC, fka “Suspicion”): Bisexual actor Raúl Esparza, of Cuban descent, will play millionaire Tom Carter, whose handshake loan to lead Danny Goodman lands Danny in a world of trouble. The character will be married to a woman, with whom he shares a child, and so the character will probably be straight.
Abby’s (NBC): Although there is no news on her character’s sexuality, Natalie Morales, who identifies as queer and is of Cuban descent, will play Abby, who runs the titular unlicensed bar out of her backyard.
Guess Who Died (NBC): Holland Taylor, who has said that most of her relationships have been with women, will play the female lead in this comedy about a widower who realizes he has fallen in love with his sister-in-law, Taylor’s character Patricia. Her character will probably be straight.
So Close (NBC): Although there is no news on his character’s sexuality, gay actor Dan Bucatinsky will play a major role as Christopher, a lawyer and the closest friend of the female lead, Riley.
By our count that is eight out actors/actresses (including Max Jenkins)
