mai here for a matchup!! i'm 5'1'' INFP Virgo girl with classic length black hair and brown eyes. i wear large circular glasses. your local tiny human with baby sized hands. hogwarts house was never one - it was always either slytherin or hufflepuff? people always think i'm a decent quiet person at first, but i'm actually really loud and talkative with people i'm close to. i always try my best to smile and help others out and hide my own emotions. people say i'm very patient too. (@hq-luv 1/2)
@hq-luv maiiii you sound so cute :( ♡ sorry this took a while !!
I match you with…
[𝑙𝑜𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔] …
Tsukishima Kei ♡‧₊˚
I had to think about this one for a while, but I decided on Tsukishima because !! First of all, the height difference? Uncanny. He always makes fun of you for being so much shorter than him, but it’s okay because you retaliate just as hard. You’re constantly asking him what the weather’s like up there and telling him that if he doesn’t watch out, a squirrel’s going to think he’s a tree and climb all the way up his body and then what’s he going to do?
If firing back a roast of his own doesn’t work, he shuts you up by resorting to his absolute last card... flirting. Every time he revenge flirts with you, a piece of him shrivels up and dies inside, but it never fails to reduce you to a stuttering mess. Victory every time.
You wanted to switch glasses with him one time, just to see what you looked like in his and vice versa. It resulted in you two bickering over who was more blind.
Your loud and talkative self is a stark contrast to Tsukki’s less than enthusiastic personality, but it actually balances out well. You pull him out of his comfort zone and show him that there’s more to life than just being a pessimist. You get him to do those crazy things with you at 3 am and although he acts bothered, he secretly loves that you care about him enough to want him right there with you.
I headcanon that Tsukki is also someone who takes time in making his notes look nice. He doesn’t make them look extra fluffy or anything, but he has his own particular way of taking notes. He exclusively uses Pilot G2 0.38 pens and nothing less. When you two study together, it’s actually quite harmonious.
You sometimes practice volleyball together on the weekends as a way to spend some quality time together. One time, you blocked his spike and he had to hear about it for the rest of the week.
Even though he acts like he doesn’t care, Tsukki has an innate radar for when you’re feeling down. He has his own way of checking up on you. It’s usually blunt, but like his brother said, he really is a kind boy.

Who Raises More Money Democrats Or Republicans
The Fundraising Arm Of The Us Democratic Party Raised More Money In July Than Its Republican Counterpart Helped By Big Contributions From Billionaire Donors Including Investor George Soros And Former Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt Disclosures Filed On Friday With The Federal Election Commission Showed The Democratic National Committee Raised About $131 Million Last Month Above The $129 Million Raised By The Republican National Committee
Reuters
The fundraising arm of the U.S.Democratic Party raised more money in July than its Republican counterpart, helped by big contributions from billionaire donors including investor George Soros and former Chief Executive Eric Schmidt.
Disclosures filed on Friday with the Federal Election Commission showed the Democratic National Committee raised about $13.1 million last month, above the $12.9 million raised by the Republican National Committee. The RNC still had more money in the bank at the close of the month – $79 million compared to nearly $68 million held by the DNC – although Democrats narrowed the gap.
Raising more money does not necessarily translate into Election Day victory, but a big bank account helps U.S. parties support their candidates’ campaigns and pays for ads and polling. Democrats have narrow majorities in the U.S.Senate and the House of Representatives, and losing control of either in the November 2022 contests would be a blow to Democratic President Joe Biden’s agenda.
While the DNC has raised slightly more than the RNC this year, Republicans have been spending money more aggressively. It also spent more in July, shelling out $1 million to JDB Marketing Inc, a Mount Pleasant, South Carolina firm that specializes in direct mail fundraising.
Some of the DNC’s largest outlays during the month were also to support fundraising efforts, including more than $1.1 million to RWT Production, a direct mail firm from Annandale, Virginia.

Democrats Raised Twice The Money Republicans Did In Five 2020 Races That Could Determine Control Of The Senate
U.S.Senate2020 ElectionDemocratic PartyRepublican Party
Democratic challengers raised nearly twice the amount Republicans did in first-quarter fundraising in five must-watch races that could determine who controls the Senate, the latest campaign finance figures showed.
Republican incumbents facing tough re-elections races in Arizona, Colorado, Kentucky, Maine and North Carolina all raised significantly less cash than their Democratic rivals in the first three months of 2020.
These contests are some of the best opportunities Democrats have to flip the seats and regain the Senate majority in November. They’re rapidly becoming some of the most expensive and contentious matchups in the country. In Kentucky, for example, the multi-million dollar ad war between Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Amy McGrath started 16 months before Election Day.
In some races, such as Maine and North Carolina, Democrats actually doubled the amount of cash brought in by their Republican challengers. In Maine, state representative Sara Gideon raised nearly three times more money than four-term incumbent Susan Collins.
The Senate is now made up of 53 Republicans, 45 Democrats and two independents who caucus with the Democrats. Democrats need to win four seats to regain control of the chamber, or three seats if the vice president is a Democrat. The vice president serves as the “president of the Senate” and can cast tie-breaking votes.
Thirty S&p 500 Ceos Vote For Biden With Their Wallet Though They Dont Contribute As Much As Trumps 15 Do
S&P 500 chief executives have combined to give more money to Trump’s campaign than Biden’s, even as the Democratic challenger has more S&P CEOs as donors.
+0.47%
As the Nov. 3 election sparks record campaign contributions, the CEOs of S&P 500 companies are helping to fund the war chests of President Donald Trump and challenger Joe Biden, while also contributing to other Republican and Democratic politicians.
In their political giving as individuals, these chief executives have combined to give more to Trump than Biden. Some 15 CEOs whose companies are components of the S&P 500 US:SPX have donated a total of $2.489 million to Trump’s principal campaign committee, its joint fundraising groups with the Republican National Committee or pro-Trump super PACs.
Meanwhile, 30 chief execs have contributed $536,100 to Biden’s main campaign committee, its joint groups with the Democratic National Committee or pro-Biden super PACs. These figures come from a MarketWatch analysis of processed Federal Election Commission data on individual contributions made between January 2019 and August 2020. Anyone who held the CEO job in 2019 or 2020 at a company that was part of the S&P 500 is included.

Here’s How The Deficit Performed Under Republican And Democratic Presidents From Reagan To Trump
This article was updated Aug. 2 to include a graph with the annual federal deficit in constant dollars.
A viral post portrays Democrats, not Republicans, as the party of fiscal responsibility, with numbers about the deficit under recent presidents to make the case.
Alex Cole, a political news editor at the website Newsitics, . Within a few hours, several Facebook users postedscreenshots of the tweet, which claims that Republican presidents have been more responsible for contributing to the deficit over the past four decades.
Those posts racked up several hundred likes and shares. We also found , where it has been upvoted more than 53,000 times.
“Morons: ‘Democrats cause deficits,’” the original tweet reads.
Reagan took the deficit from 70 billion to 175 billion. Bush 41 took it to 300 billion. Clinton got it to zero. Bush 43 took it from 0 to 1.2 trillion.Obama halved it to 600 billion. Trump’s got it back to a trillion.Morons: “Democrats cause deficits.”

At PolitiFact, we’vereportedextensively on how Republicans and Democrats often try to pin the federal deficit on each other — muddying the facts in the process. So we wanted to see if this Facebook post is true.
Some people confuse the federal deficit with the debt — but they’re two separate concepts.

The First Modern Campaign Finance Restrictions Were Soon Followed By A Boom In Pac Spending
FEC, Corrado, Center for Responsive Politics
In the early 1970s, and particularly after the election spending abuses revealed in the Watergate scandal, Congress put new limits on donations to candidates. But the overall amount of money in politics didn’t decline. The money instead started going to PACs, or political action committees, rather than candidates. Thousands of new ones were formed, and they started raising hundreds of millions of dollars each year overall. This shows a problem for would-be campaign finance regulators: If one particular aspect of election spending is regulated or capped, big money will try to find another way in.
Congress Responds More To The Preferences Of The Wealthy Than To Those Of Average People
Gilens and Page, “Testing Theories of American Politics
Who really matters in our democracy — the general public, or wealthy elites? These charts, from a study by political scientists Martin Gilens of Princeton and Benjamin Page of Northwestern, seek to answer that question. The first one — the flat line — shows that as more and more average citizens support action on an issue, they’re not any more likely to get what they want. That’s a shocking finding in a democracy. In contrast, the next chart shows that as more economic elites want a certain policy change, they do become more likely to get what they want. Specifically, if fewer than 20 percent of wealthy Americans supported a policy change, it only happened about 18 percent of the time. But when 80 percent of them were in support, the change ended up happening 45 percent of the time. There’s no similar effect for average Americans.
Big Problems With Small Money Republicans Catch Up To Democrats In Online Giving
Alex Seitz-Wald
WASHINGTON — Republicans are beginning to catch up with Democrats in online fundraising, creating for the first time in modern history a political landscape where both parties are largely funded by small donations — for better or, some say, for worse.
Democrats, who have dominated online fundraising since the early days of the internet, have claimed that the billions they raise in small donations are evidence that they are the party of the people, less reliant on wealthy donors and business interests than the GOP.
Republicans have spent years playing catch-up, mostly unsuccessfully. But now, just in time for the 2022 midterm elections, they are starting to pull even, thanks in large part to former President Donald Trump and his army of online devotees.
“This is the harvest of the seeds of digital infrastructure Republicans have been planting for years,” said Matt Gorman, a GOP strategist who worked for the party’s congressional campaign arm during the last midterm election. “That’s why you’re seeing things like freshman members of the House raising over $1 million . In 2018, we were begging folks to raise a fifth of that.”
Even out of office, Trump continues to raise massive sums of money, largely online. He announced Saturday that his political groups had collected nearly $82 million in the first half of the year , giving him a war chest of more than $102 million.
Democratic Party Committees Raised More Money Than Republican Committees In 2013
Paul Blumenthal
WASHINGTON — The three major Democratic Party committees raised $16 million more than their Republican Party counterparts in 2013.
The Democratic committees raised $193 million for the year, compared with $177 million for the three Republican committees, according to reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.
The fundraising success for the Democratic committees stems from big numbers posted by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. The DCCC raised $75.8 million, the most of any party committee, while the DSCC pulled in $52.7 million. Both committees topped their Republican counterparts by more than $15 million.
“Our substantial fundraising lead is the result of one major dynamic: Americans are ready to replace this broken Republican Congress with leaders who have the right priorities and who will focus on solving problems,” DCCC Chairman Steve Israel said in a statement.
The Republican National Committee, however, beat the Democratic National Committee in head-to-head fundraising for the year. In 2013, the RNC raised $80.6, almost $16 million more than the $64.7 million pulled in by the DNC.
The money raised by these committees will finance large advertising purchases in battleground House and Senate races, among other things.
Report: Trump Has Raised More Money In California Than Most Democrat Candidates
California is well known as arguably the most liberal state in America, however recent statistics may shock both Democrats and Republicans.
It looks like there may be more Trump supporters in the “deep blue” state of California than most people think.
According to the news site Cal Matters, President Trump comes in third place for the most money raised in California out of all the Democratic candidates. He is just behind Mayor Pete Buttigieg of Indiana and Senator Kamala Harris who resides in California.
Check out what Cal Matters reported:
This may come as surprise to the president, the national media and more than a few Californians, but there are plenty of Trump supporters in the “Resistance State,” too. And since the beginning of the year, they’ve been spending a lot of money to keep the president in the White House.
New campaign finance statistics show that President Donald Trump raised $3.2 million—more money from the California donor class than all of his Democratic challengers, but two.
Not only that, but the Trump campaign collected more from itemized small donors—those who gave in increments of less than $100 at a time—than anyone else in the field. The president bested even Democratic contender Bernie Sanders in the small-donor sweepstakes.
But it’s not all pixie dust for Trump in California: 89% of all itemized presidential campaign donations from Californians went to contenders out to defeat him.
More than $3 million has come since the beginning of this year.
Democratic Senate Hopefuls Are Raising Tons Of Money They’re Also Spending It
Congressional races heat up as Dems try to fl…02:14
Democratic Senate hopeful Jaime Harrison of South Carolina raised $57 million between July and September. Sara Gideon in Maine raised more than $39 million in that same period. And Mark Kelly in Arizona brought in $38.7 million.
These eye-popping numbers shattered the previous record for fundraising, Beto O’Rourke’s $38 million cash haul in the third quarter of 2018.
Now the Democrats are spending that money in the face of massive Republican super PAC funds. And it’s left many Republican candidates with more cash on hand than the Democrats in the final weeks of the race.
In South Carolina, where the Senate race is unexpectedly tight, Harrison’s $57 million in three months was double Republican incumbent Senator Lindsey Graham’s $28 million haul, a state record for a Republican. Records show from July through September, Harrison spent more than $55 million. According to his October FEC filing, Harrison paid AL Media LLC more than $42 million over three months for TV, radio and digital advertising. He also spent another $6.5 million for digital advertising and services to Mothership Strategies, and $2 million to Blueprint Strategy LLC for radio and billboard advertising. $641,000 went to “direct mailing services.” That amounts to more than $51 million spent on ads and direct mail alone.
Who Is Richer Democrats Or Republicans The Answer Probably Wont Surprise You
Which of the two political parties has more money, Democrats or Republicans? Most would rush to say Republicans due to the party’s ideas towards tax and money. In fact, polls have shown about 60 percent of the American people believe Republicans favor the rich. But how true is that? can help you write about the issue but read our post first.
Presidential Campaign Spending Is Overwhelmingly On Tv Ads In Swing States
Data: Kantar, Analysis: John Sides, Washington Post
Presidential campaign money goes overwhelmingly to purchasing TV ads in just a few swing states. This map shows where ad spending was heaviest in 2012: Florida, Virginia, and Ohio, where more than $150 million was spent. Iowa, North Carolina, Colorado, and Nevada saw more than $50 million each. But most of the country saw nothing at all. Presidential campaigns have become a quadrennial stimulus bill for purple states funded by donors in red and blue states.
Democratic Party Enters 2021 In Power And Flush With Cash For A Change
The Democratic National Committee has a roughly $75 million war chest, raising the party’s hopes of keeping power in 2022 and accelerating a Democratic shift in the Sun Belt states.
After years of flirting with financial disaster, the Democratic Party entered 2021 not only in control of the White House, the House and the Senate but with more money in the bank than ever before at the start of a political cycle.
The Democratic National Committee will report to the Federal Election Commission on Sunday that it ended 2020 with $38.8 million in the bank and $3 million in debts, according to an advance look at its financial filings. In addition, there is roughly $40 million earmarked for the party, left over from its joint operations with the Biden campaign, according to people familiar with the matter. This gives the Democrats a roughly $75 million war chest at the start of President Biden’s tenure.
“This is a number that is unimaginable,” said Howard Dean, a former party chairman.
Party data, resources and infrastructure undergird candidates up and down the ballot, and Democratic officials are already dreaming of early investments in voter registration that may accelerate the political realignment Democrat are hoping to bring about in key Sun Belt states.
“We had to juggle who we were going to pay,” Tom Perez, who until earlier this month was the chairman of the D.N.C., said of the early part of his tenure, which began in 2017.
The Supreme Court Has Struck Down Many Limitations On Election Spending
Over the past four decades, Congressional attempts to regulate the campaign finance system have repeatedly been stymied by the Supreme Court on First Amendment grounds. This table lists the major cases in which the court has ruled campaign finance restrictions unconstitutional — and how closely divided the court has been in every case. The first major such case was Buckley v. Valeo, in 1976, which struck down much of the newly-adopted campaign finance infrastructure in the name of free speech. The next major campaign finance overhaul — the 2002 McCain-Feingold law — survived an initial court challenge in 2003. But after Justice Sandra Day O’Connor was replaced with the more conservative Sam Alito in 2006, the court had a majority that objected to major provisions of the law. Since then, a series of 5-4 decisions have narrowed the scope of permissible campaign finance regulations further and further.
Us Democratic Fundraising Arm Outraises Republican Counterpart In July

WASHINGTON, Aug 20 – The fundraising arm of the U.S. Democratic Party raised more money in July than its Republican counterpart, helped by big contributions from billionaire donors including investor George Soros and former Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt.
Democrats have narrow majorities in the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, and losing control of either in the November 2022 contests would be a blow to Democratic President Joe Biden’s agenda.
Soros, a famed investor and a bogeyman of conservatives due to his status as a major donor for liberal causes, gave the DNC at least $250,000 in July.
Who Raised More Money In A Majority Of Tight House Races Democrats Did
Total reported in the most competitive House races
DEMOCRATS RAISED $172MILLION
With the midterm elections just weeks away, Democratic candidates have outraised their Republican opponents in a majority of the 69 most competitive House races, according to fund-raising numbers filed by the candidates on Monday. Some of the biggest earners include two Democratic women: Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey’s 11th District and Amy McGrath in Kentucky’s Sixth District.
Many Democratic candidates raised large sums from small donations online. Democrats are betting on small donor energy to make a difference in tight races.
Facing a host of tough races, Republican Party leaders have begun pulling money away from some struggling incumbents, especially in suburbs where President Trump is unpopular.

Republicans Winning Money Race As They Seek To Take Over House In 2022
The National Republican Congressional Committee announced Wednesday that it had raised $45.4 million in the second quarter of 2021, the most it has ever raised in three months of a non-election year, as Republicans seek to take over the House in 2022.

The Most Famous Political Figures Can Make Millions In Speaking Fees
CNN
For the top echelon of famous and recognizable political figures, there’s another way to cash in after leaving offices — by giving high-priced speeches to corporate groups. Former politicians and aides from both parties participate in this practice — the more famous they are, the higher the fee they tend to be able to charge. But the undisputed king of speaking fees is Bill Clinton, who charges at least $250,000 per speech — and charged $750,000 for at least one. This chart, based on data assembled by CNN, shows how speaking fees have made Clinton over $100 million since he left office.
How Trumps Team Spent Most Of The $16 Billion It Raised Over 2 Years
Biden and Trump spar in final presidential debate
President Donald Trump‘s reelection team kicked off 2020 with what seemed like an unbeatable cash advantage, boasting a massive fundraising operation, bolstered by the joint efforts of the Republican Party.
Fast-forward 10 months and they’ve burned through a whopping $1.4 billion of the more than $1.6 billion raised over the last two years, struggling to keep up with former Vice President Joe Biden, more than what former President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign and the Democrats had raised and spent by the end of the 2012 cycle.
The revealing figures, released as the two presidential candidates debated on stage Thursday night for the last time before Election Day, came after the campaign blew through $63 million in the first two weeks of October alone — a critical time when it only brought in $44 million. The vast majority of the money spent during that time — nearly $45 million — went to television and online advertising, according to the latest disclosure report filed to the Federal Election Commission, as Biden and pro-Biden efforts ramped up his ad spending.

The Massive Difference In How Democrats And Republicans Raise Money
You probably have a preconceived notion of where the political parties raise their money. Republicans get lots of donations from wealthy individuals and corporate interests; Democrats get money from less rich individuals and a somewhat overlapping set of corporate interests. Well, we have news for you: That perception is completely correct.
arrow-right
At least, that is, for the parties’ Governors Associations. On Tuesday, organizations and candidates that raise money for political campaigns had to file quarterly reports with the Federal Election Commission. The Democratic Governors Association and the Republican Governors Association both reported how much they’d raised between April 1 and June 30. The RGA did much better, about $24 million raised versus under $14 million, although the DGA had more donors, about 1,500 to 400.
When money is given to these groups, which can accept unlimited donations unlike their federal counterparts, the organizations have to document who gave, and how much, and when. Organizations that give just list an address; individuals have to identify their employer. Which lets us see pretty easily how those two groups break down.
And so, we see that the RGA got a much larger percentage of their donations from organizations than did the DGA.

Who are these beneficent individuals? The DeVos family, of Amway fame. Las Vegas megadonor Sheldon Adelson. And Kotch? Koch? Someone named “David Koch,” if you’ve heard of him.
Congressional Staffers Can Take Trips Funded By Foreign Governments
Washington Post
After the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal, Congress put several new restrictions on gifts that could be offered to members of Congress or their staffers. Yet there’s one significant loophole that remains — Congressional staffers are allowed to take trips abroad funded by foreign governments. The Washington Post’s TW Farnam reported on paid trips taken by Congressional staffers last year, and the map here is our depiction of Farnam’s findings. Between 2006 and 2011, 226 staffers took trips to China, 121 to Taiwan, and 65 to Saudi Arabia — where those countries’ governments footed the bill.

The Rise of an Antitrust Pioneer The Teamsters asked the F.T.C. to pause review of the deal. In a letter sent today to the agency’s acting chairwoman, Rebecca Slaughter, the union requested that the agency wait for one of two things: Congress passes a bill by Senator Amy Klobuchar, Democrat of Minnesota, that would make broad changes to antitrust rules. The legislation would change the framework used by the F.T.C. to evaluate the deal, allowing the regulator to reject transactions based on the possibility of competitive harm instead of a determination that it will create such harm. Or, at the least until the agency ensures “that all competitive effects from the transaction have been fully considered and remedied.” There are other issues at play. Marathon has locked out 200 union workers at a refinery in Minnesota. And unions have had an often tense relationship with activist hedge funds like Elliott, whom they have accused of calling for layoffs that affect union members. (In its letter to the F.T.C., the Teamsters union criticized what it called “Elliott’s singular desire to liquidate Marathon’s assets to fund enormous share buybacks and special dividends.”) But the agency is already far along in its review. Marathon executives, who hope to close the deal by the end of the first quarter, confirmed on a call with analysts last month that they had responded to a second request for information from the F.T.C. and were working on solutions. (The proposed buyer of Speedway, Seven and I, is reportedly looking to sell up to 300 gas stations to ease the agency’s concerns.) The F.T.C. must follow statutory timelines for reviewing deals, which means the agency can delay its examination only for so long, even if it wanted to. And it’s not clear whether Ms. Klobuchar’s bill will pass, or in what form it might do so. “It’s taken me 27 years to become an overnight sensation.” — David Nussbaum, the investment banker who co-created the SPAC in 1993, on how his financial innovation has become a hot trend on Wall Street The year of corporate transparency Companies are increasingly under public pressure to be more open, with political spending getting particular attention since the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol. Proponents of greater transparency say that demand is growing: “The disclosure train will be leaving the station,” Bruce Freed, the president of the nonprofit Center for Political Accountability, told DealBook. The SEC is all about E.S.G. Transparency around political giving is considered a governance issue. Last week, the Securities and Exchange Commission said it would form a task force focused on issues around climate and environmental, social and governance concerns, making both priorities for its examinations division. And corporate disclosures — particularly around political spending — were a recurring theme in the testimony of Gary Gensler, President Biden’s pick to lead the S.E.C., in his Senate confirmation hearing. This year “is going to be really transformative,” said Josh Levin, the C.E.O. of the investment platform OpenInvest, which lets financial advisers adjust client portfolios based on companies’ openness on political spending. The platform uses an annual ranking of S&P 500 companies based on their politics and lobbying disclosure policies. Source link Orbem News #Antitrust #Pioneer #Rise

Super Soy Me - North Bay Bohemian
Like any typical chump, I planned to start an ambitious new diet on New Year's Day. Fine, the day after New Year's Day.
The diet was strict, but had just one simple rule: Eat food, mostly frozen, as much as I want, on a $100 per week budget. And here's the kicker: Eat only food that's made by Amy's Kitchen, the privately held natural foods manufacturer based in Petaluma. Yes, it was a bold plan.
Day 1: I load a frozen, gluten-free tofu scramble breakfast wrap in the microwave oven, starting the day's calorie count at 300. At lunch it's a chili mac bowl, 420 calories, and later a spinach pizza pocket sandwich, 280 calories. Dinner brings a longtime favorite to the table; veggie loaf with mashed potatoes, peas and carrots. But those 340 calories don't feel like enough, so I round out the evening with a spinach pizza snack, and 380 additional calories.
Day 2: I'm a little hungover. Ugh, what happened?
The Perils of a Cruelty-Free Diet
I'm on this diet partly to see if man can live on Amy's alone. While it's a controlled experiment, it's not an inhumane experiment, so I did not forswear the enjoyment of a few glasses of wine with dinner, before dinner, or after dinner. Besides, eliminating the beverage variable might have skewed the results, right? Instead, I opt for certified organic wine, in the spirit of Amy's Kitchen, whose listed ingredients are nearly all prefaced with "organic," save the sea salt and black pepper.
The problem: after unpacking five frozen meals from five cardboard cartons, I'd only packed in 1,720 calories on that first day. No doubt the wine hit a little harder because that's well below the 2,000 daily calories that nutrition labels are based on, or the recommended 2,400 calorie diet of a moderately active male of my age, and weight.
Ah, that weight. The other reason for the diet was to lose a little of it. I demur from saying what that weight is, lest some readers then wish to knock me around a bit, but suffice it to say that I feel like the image of some kind of corpulent, late career Orson Welles. (More like Audrey Hepburn, remarked a more portly friend a few years back. That smarts a bit, but then again—such style!) What's that about body image self-acceptance? Stuff self-acceptance in a cheeseburger. I demand to get back that flat belly that I haven't seen since age 29, and I'll try any diet in that service. The allure of Amy's is the quick and easy calorie counting, printed right on the box, and de facto portion control. The convenience of simply reheating frozen food, too, leaves more time for that moderate activity.
Lesson learned, on to Day 2: Country bake breakfast, 420 calories; veggie sausage, 55 calories; brown rice and vegetables bowl, 260 calories; meatless Italian sausage, mushroom and olive pizza, 930 calories. Yes, I know the pizza is supposed to be three separate servings, but the day's total is only 1,665 calories. Yet I feel stuffed. Might be because I'm not used to consuming so many carbohydrates (see the surprise tally at the end of the article), and that's a criticism I've heard of products like Amy's: organic or not, isn't it too high in sodium, too stuffed with carbohydrates, like other processed snack foods? When I announced my dietary goal to someone at the company (who shan't be named), in fact, the response was: "But what about vegetables?"
In an era when consumers are being advised to eat whole foods, and lower on the food chain, Amy's occupies an interesting space in between the good reputation of organic foods and the bad rap on processed foods. Frozen foods have taken some heat since the "TV dinner" days of my childhood, when, notwithstanding mom's cooking being the best, it was a special treat to have those tin foil tray dinners once a week. Meanwhile, Amy's Kitchen, launched by Rachel and Andy Berliner in 1987 (the original conceit was that they couldn't find any time-saving convenience foods that were of homemade quality, after the birth of their daughter, Amy, who is now a co-owner in the company), has puffed up from one pot pie sold in what used to be called "health food" stores in Northern California and Oregon, to 260 products sold in megastores the likes of Target, in 29 countries. Revenue in 2017 totaled $500 million.
Can they stay true to home-cooked ideals at such a scale? I've got to get behind the kale curtain, and see how the organic tofu sausage is made.
Amy's, Can You Hear Me?
Day 3: I've had no luck trying to contact the public relations desk at Amy's, so, fueled only by their breakfast scramble, 360 calories, and veggie sausage, 55 calories, I set out by bicycle for the company headquarters in Petaluma. Am I helping to offset the carbon footprint of these packaged meals, or is their economy of scale inherently more efficient than my home stovetop? Will there someday be fewer veal crates, like the ones that I'm passing by on Stony Point Road, because of vegetarian options like Amy's provides? These are things I think of on my ride. Besides that biking in heavy traffic sucks veggie meatballs.
It wasn't enough. On Lakeville Highway, a few blocks short, and fatigued, I have to turn back or else miss the last SMART train back to Santa Rosa until late afternoon.
Breakthrough at the Drive-Thru
I get a new idea on the train, remembering the Amy's Drive-Thru restaurant in Rohnert Park. It's a long shot, but at the very least, after ordering a single veggie cheeseburger and fries (alas, I am not asked to "super-size" my order to the signature double patty "Amy" burger), I can ask for any kind of help at the register. I'm in luck—Dave Wolfgram, president of Amy's Drive-Thru Restaurants, is working on his laptop a few tables over. He seems genuinely concerned and promises to hook me up with HQ.
Although this joint is as bustling as it was on my first visit over three years ago ("Understanding Amy's," Sept. 9, 2015), Amy's has rolled out their takeover of the fast food nation at, well, an organic pace. An outpost in SFO (Amy's "fly-thru"?) is scheduled for July, with a Corte Madera drive-thru opening in 2020.
How the Organic Tofu Sausage is Made
I'm in! I meet Paul Schiefer for a tour of Amy's flagship production facility, which has been located on Santa Rosa's Northpoint Parkway since the early days. Schiefer, who is a nephew to the Berliners, grew up with the business, and is now senior director of sustainability.
On the way to the dressing room where I'll don a smock, hairnet and beard net, I'm already distracted by a novel sight: two vending machines in the break room are stocked with Amy's entrées. They're sold to employees for just $1 to $1.50. But the Blue Sky organic cola in the adjacent vending machine, Schiefer admits, isn't as popular with employees as Pepsi. No strict diets here: there's a Frito-Lay option, too.
Workers are everywhere on the plant floor, monitoring computer screens, carting multi-level tray carts here and there. Look, there goes my old friend, the lentil loaf! Over there, veggie sausage, destined for a country bake. In one room, which is as big as most winery cellars I see, pinto beans cascade in an industrial waterfall, while a worker tends to a steaming kettle perched high in the middle distance.
A smaller room houses one of the largest tofu-making facilities on the West Coast, according to Schiefer. Here are whole soybeans, soaked and removed of fiber, which goes to a dairy. Then, hot soy milk pours forth, and further down the line, blocks of fresh tofu, some 9,400 pounds per day, are cut and sent on to their rendezvous with organic oats, organic bulgar wheat and organic onions and more to, yes, make the tofu sausage.
On the kettle deck, an enchilada sauce has just been made—we see it later on down the line, where freshly frozen entreés clank off the conveyor belt. Tomato sauces are made from fresh tomatoes. Vegetables such as broccoli may be fresh, or flash frozen, since there are only two harvests a year from their supplier. "We'd rather get it all fresh, in season, than go to the ends of the earth to bring it in," says Schiefer.
In the burrito room, bean and cheese filling plops onto tortillas, made fresh in the room next door, in a way that my minder from the marketing department doesn't wish me to photograph. But it's all hand work after that. One employee tells me, still folding while turning away from the assembly line to explain, that she's been honing her technique for 21 years, shaping the filling, and folding six or more ways in a flash of hand movements I can hardly follow.
One thinks of frozen foods as the ultimate deracinated, non-local product. But here, I have the dissonant revelation that, at least for the North Bay, this is truly local. All this time, my frozen bean burrito (and another 160,000 of them per day) has been hand-rolled just across town. (Soups are made in Idaho, however; pizza in Medford, Ore.)
The Results
At the end of a week, I had to stop the experiment. Not necessarily because I felt "over stuffed" on just 1,940 calories, as I noted on Day 6, or "strangely tired" on Day 7. My weight jumped up at first, but I ended up a few pounds lighter. Still, I would have been willing to carry out a more rigorous one-month experiment. But if I didn't bust my waistline, I busted my budget: $140 for seven days.
I should note that the company does not endorse an all-Amy's diet. Instead, they offer meal plans on their website incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and smoothies, most with just one Amy's product per day. That said, I felt that I might have had a real serving of veggies with their Asian-inspired entrées, like the dumplings in savory Hoisin sauce, and for a frozen food, they tasted fresh enough. And in the harvest casserole bowl, there's surely close to a half-cup of sweet potatoes, kale and Swiss chard—it'd be hard to excuse all that quinoa otherwise.
According to Schiefer, I'm correct in my assessment that while the frozen food business is stagnant in general, Amy's is bucking the trend, and has been growing faster than the category for years. Still, some of the traditional tray-style dinner styles have been pulled off the line: RIP, Southern meal, chili and corn bread, and good ol' veggie steak and gravy.
All told, I ate not more than 1,700 calories per day. The protein count averaged 67 grams daily — not bad — and carbohydrates actually averaged less than the Daily Value, at 200. But sodium indeed hit more than 3,200 milligrams per day, higher than the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's recommendation of less than 2,400, but a little under the average American's intake. Amy's does offer low sodium versions with less than half that of the typical entrée.
The next week I flipped a 180 and launched an ultra-low-carb diet of meat, cheese and vegetables for the next month. I felt pretty good on it. And I gained back five pounds.

Much Ado About MOOCs: Where Are We in the Evolution of Online Courses?
A lot has changed since 2012 or, the year the New York Times dubbed the "Year of the MOOC." The premise back then was that classes would make high-quality online education accessible for all—and for free. Today, many MOOC providers now charge a fee. They’ve rolled out bundles of courses called ‘Specializations’ or ‘Nanodegrees.’ And popular providers like Coursera and edX are increasingly partnering with colleges and universities to offer MOOC-based degrees online.
So, seven years after the “Year of the MOOC,” we’re wondering: Where are these courses and companies today? And how are universities responding?
EdSurge recently hosted a meetup where we invited a group of experts to weigh in on those questions, and they offered some fascinating insights. The speakers included Dhawal Shah, founder of Class Central, Amy Ahearn, associate director at Acumen+, Kapeesh Saraf, head of growth and consumer products at Coursera, and Kristin Palmer, director of online learning at University of Virginia.
This week, we’re bringing the event to you—via the podcast of course. Listen to the discussion on this week’s EdSurge On Air podcast. You can follow the podcast on the Apple Podcast app, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Play Music or wherever you listen. Or read a portion of the interview below, lightly edited for clarity.
EdSurge: Dhawal, can you give us a brief recap on what the MOOC landscape looked like in 2018?
Shah: Last year, the number of learners who had taken at least one MOOC crossed 100 million, but the number of learners added was just 20 million, which was less than 23 million for the last two years. So the rate at which new users are coming into the MOOC space is decreasing.
The number of courses has been growing steadily at the same rate now. We have more than 11,000 courses from 900 universities. As for the MOOC providers, Coursera is the biggest one—with the most revenue and the most number of users, and also the most number of employees. Udacity ended 2017 with 500 employees, but they had layoffs, and ended 2018 with 330 employees.
This week's podcast sponsor is AWS Educate: With a mission to provide students and educators with tools needed to accelerate cloud learning, AWS Educate will soon announce its newest offering for educators. Take a look at AWS Educate's evolution and hear about what is next.
There's no real infrastructure available to train that many people.
Kapeesh Saraf, Coursera
This is how the micro-credential landscape looks like: EdX and Coursera both have multiple micro-credentials, each with their own branding. Overall, 630 micro-credentials existed at the end of 2018, but most of the new credentials came from just two credentials, Coursera specialization, and edX professional certificate.
But the big change in 2018 was MOOC-based degrees. We ended 2017, with seven universities announcing 15 degrees, and in 2018 30 more universities joined in, and launched more than 45 degrees. I think we'll see more of this in this 2019 too.
Kapeesh, why is Coursera pursuing this shift towards MOOC based degrees, and monetizing some of these programs, from a business and revenue perspective?
Saraf: We've been pursuing MOOC-based degrees and different types of micro-credentials for the last couple of years, and we're doing this for two main reasons. The first one is the advent of AI and digital transformation. And so, a lot of people are gonna be needing to learn new skills. We see this really big need out there for people to learn new skills, and earn credentials, which they can show to employers vouching for those skills.
And then the second trend is this demographic shift. If you look at a country like India, over the next 10 to 20 years, there will be more than 300 million people that will enter the workforce. And there's no real infrastructure available to train that many people, and there's no real assurance, a way for all these people to get the skills that they'll need in this new world. When you look at these two trends, we think there's a huge opportunity and a gap for people to be trained and get credentials, and then connect it to employers.
At Coursera, we don't really see ourselves as a MOOC provider, we look at ourselves as a three-sided platform that's connecting learners, educators and employers. And so, we're in this unique position to help universities and partners such as University of Virginia create credentials and programs that they can use to satisfy the needs of learners, based on these two trends. And so that's why we've been innovating quite a bit in MOOC-based credentials and MOOC-based degrees because that's where we see the big needle with the next few years.
Kristen, you work at UVa, which is one of the universities that partners with Coursera. What do you think about the direction that Coursera and other providers like edX are going in with more and more MOOC based degrees?
Palmer: This is a tricky one. We ended up signing up with Coursera, and we have three specializations and 43 courses.
Even providers are confused because they have so much variation within their own micro-credentials, so it makes it harder for a student or an employer to convey that information.
Dhawal Shah, Class Central
I want to quickly touch on your earlier question about monetization because I think there is attention in higher education about the fact that we're actually a business. And especially as a public university, with a land grant to help the Commonwealth and the citizens of the Commonwealth and to try to fill jobs and to educate the citizens. But, at the end of the day, there's a sustainability issue. And for all the people that are thinking about startups in the audience, there needs to be a business plan.
We still do free content. But as a university partner, from the beginning, we're a 200-year-old institution. And it's very difficult for us to understand how our value proposition as a partner, and a content provider on Coursera, like what our roles and responsibilities are, compared to Coursera as they continue to move in a degree direction? I think, it would be valuable for our university, and many other university partners, of just being clearer, and more transparent around, “This is how we're gonna work together,” because there are a whole countries, and domains, and jobs, that are opening that we're not agile enough as a university to serve, that we can serve in partnership with a vendor like Coursera. But maybe we're not so great at that communication yet.
Where does the progression towards MOOC-based degrees leave micro-credentials? Are these going to be a thing of the past?
Shah: Micro-credentials are generally a grouping of courses, and I think packaging [online courses] as micro-credentials increases the chances of learners [completing]. And I think for that reason alone, they will linger along for a while. But I'm not sure if they're doing the job of being a job-=ready credential. And the big reason for this is, there's too much confusion in the market, and everybody's trying to own the next big credential.
There's a general understanding of what traditional degrees mean, and I think the understanding what micro-credentials mean is not clear. I think even providers are confused because they have so much variation within their own micro-credentials, so it makes it harder for a student or an employer to convey that information.
Amy, you wrote a piece about completion rates not too long ago. Can you tell us general themes around MOOC completion rates, and other thoughts that you have about this?
It's always a great aspiration as an instructional designer to keep thinking about ways that you can help people persist in the learning experience
Amy Ahearn, +Acumen
Ahearn: I design online courses every day, and I've been doing so for about five years. And probably the most frequently asked question I get is, “What is the completion rate for your online courses?” And to be perfectly transparent, for our MOOCs, it averages around 5 to 10 percent, which is the industry benchmark, if you look as a whole. And people say, “Oh my gosh, you have 2,000 to 17,000 people signing up for these, and you're only getting 10 percent to complete. Isn't that a failure?” And in some ways, I think it's always a great aspiration as an instructional designer to keep thinking about ways that you can help people persist in the learning experience, but I also think we're setting an incredibly high bar for what is often free content on the internet.
And if you compared it to other types of digital content, whether that's watching a video, or reading a medium post, or doing anything online, you often see that if you were to do the equivalent of a MOOC experience, which is often signing up for a 12-week experience, doing quite difficult things, whether it's some exercise, some new learning experience, I actually think it's amazing sometimes to see who ends up at the other side of that funnel.
Just to give you a sense, our most popular course is a human centered design course that we run with IDEO.org, and we have deliberately kept it quite hard. We require people to form a team, we require them to go out and talk to real people, to interview them about their needs. They have to submit pictures back on the platform. They have to prototype something, and test it in the real world. They have to upload the assignment. What we found is that if you get those 5 to 10 percent of people who finish it, they're really amazing individuals. And that is the equivalent of the selection rate at some of the most competitive universities.
How have Coursera's views on completion rates have evolved over the years?
Saraf: I spent two out of the four and a half years of my time at Coursera being the guy who was focused on and responsible for our completion rates, so I have some experience in this matter. I think our views have evolved quite a bit, just as we've learned about online learning and what MOOCs are and what they aren't.
It's true that completion rates are really low, but it's also because there's just a lot of people actually just trying out courses, and when you have 100,000 people enrolled in a class, they're exploring, and not all of them intend to learn. What we see is, if people who have skin in the game have a much higher completion rate, and if you focus on those, as an example, people that are paying to earn a certificate, or enrolling to earn a certificate, you see that completion rates shoot up to north of 50 or 60 percent.
And as you go up that commitment curve, you see much higher completion rates. So, we focus a lot more now, on people that have some commitment or skin in the game, as opposed to everyone that's just trying. We still wanted to make the platform more engaging, so that even the very casual person who's just checking it out still gets engaged in the course, and ends up completing, but that's not the focus.
I'd love to open it up to questions from the audience. It looks like we have one right here.
There will be people being paid to think, and innovate, and bump ideas off of each other. It's just, a lot of those ideas are now gonna be between people in different parts of the world.
Kristin Palmer, University of Virginia
Audience member: My name is Nicole, I'm with the State Department. What does the future hold for our professors, our content creators, the experts the subject matter experts? Is it a plight? Is it all opportunity? Are they the taxi drivers in this ride sharing economy? What does the future hold for them?
Palmer: I suspect everybody that's interested in education has had that one teacher, or that one moment, in that one place, where your world was opened up, or opportunities were put in front of you, or challenges were created. And that is still something we need in space. We need to figure out how do we scale that, so that there are more people that can provide that type of experience to more people.
But I'm also highly controversial at UVa because I feel like executive education is done. We have set our faculty up to be consultants. We encourage them to consult, and stay savvy in the marketplace. And why Coursera is not hitting every executive education client, and saying, “Hey, Professor Alex come and be a consultant and do a high-touch thing in San Francisco for weekend.” There's a little bit of a gig economy, I think, that will come up in that space, and it will not be every faculty member. It will be those that are savvy in that space, and have good relationships.
Ahearn: I think we have some real strategic questions around where we start to put paywalls, and I see that not a lot of people end up not wanting to pay for the content, or the curriculum. You can get that for free. It's accessible in many different places. I spend a lot of time writing courses, and developing that, so that's painful for me to say, but I think it's true. I think what we are seeing people willing to pay for, though, is the instruction, the personal feedback, the structure, the rigor—essentially, the teaching.
Audience member: I run a private school, and we're accredited. If my pass rate was 5 percent, I would be shut down. Do you ever run into issues like this?
Palmer: I do think as far as there's a business plan, and there needs to be sustainability, and there needs to be alumni giving money for endowments. There will be people being paid to think, and innovate, and bump ideas off of each other. It's just, a lot of those ideas are now gonna be between people in different parts of the world. They're not necessarily going to be in one building at the University of Virginia. It's why we still have Latin classes, and we have other things that are not high money making careers, but we still offer them as content. And that will continue to be the case.
As far as accreditation, I don't think there's any degree programs anywhere online that has 5 percent completion rates. That would get yanked. Ours are certainly closer to 100 percent, and this is where that skin in the game goes. But 5 percent, that’s just [referring to the completion rates] for a free MOOC, or I'm gonna pay $49 and maybe post it to LinkedIn if I finish it.

Dallas Morning News Names Eberstein Witherite Among Top 100 Places to Work for 4th Year in a Row
Employees of the accident injury law firm show appreciation for the leadership team’s tireless effort to foster a “people focused” culture.
Eberstein Witherite has been recognized by the Dallas Morning News as one of the “Top 100 Places to Work” for the fourth year in a row. As studies show that an astounding 71 percent of workers in the U.S. are reportedly unhappy with their jobs and seeking to change employers, the law firm continues to strive for excellence in employee satisfaction across the board, and the effort hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Who Makes it on the “Top 100” List?
The Dallas Morning News makes its “Top 100” selections by surveying the workforce of each submitted nominee. The assessment involves factors such as organization wide values and ethics, alignment, effectiveness, connection, management, and employee work life balance. Eberstein Witherite was nominated in March and surveyed in May prior to being ranked and benchmarked against other participating organizations in the final rounds of the selection process.
Eberstein Witherite’s ratings proved that not only does the firm deserve its coveted spot on the list in terms of how employees are valued, but the leadership in place continuously raises the bar for community service excellence. This is a prominent theme among those chosen for inclusion in this year’s winner’s circle. Among the noted ways in which the Dallas law firm goes the extra mile in being a part of a giveback nation are raising funds for domestic violence victims, supporting area students with scholarships and needed clothes and supplies each year, and providing holiday meals and winter coats for low-income families.
Fostering a Culture Where Employees Love What They Do
Amy Witherite, founding attorney of Eberstein Witherite, says that the firm places exceedingly high value on continuing to foster a “people first” culture asserting “our office culture is key to not only our success, but also our ability to serve such a broad demographic within our local community so well.” The personal injury attorney continues, “We conduct our own audit about expectations and needs of our team members, and accommodate them accordingly. We are proud that our employees see that we value their contribution to the team, and are honored to have earned this distinction for a fourth year in a row.”
The Dallas firm, which also has offices based in Fort Worth and Houston, will celebrate their recognition at the Dallas Morning News Luncheon to be held on November 1, 2018. The firm will also host an employee tenure/ “Top 100” acknowledgment event at the American Airlines Center during the Mavericks vs. Pistons game on January 25th to reward and show appreciation to the team.

hi b can i get a matchup! she/her + i’m bi! i’m 5’2 with short black hair and an aries in slytherin! i’m friendly and will talk to anyone about anything. a lot of friends + people i know think i’m funny :P tho sometimes people tell me they were scared of me before becoming friends. i think i love more than i get back. ig i can get people out of their comfort zone (basically every esfp trait) but like i‘m shy around ppl i’m in love with. hehe i also do ballet and i’m into fashion/skincare! ty bb!
I match you with…
[𝑙𝑜𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔] …
Oikawa Tooru ♡‧₊˚
Man, you and Oikawa would be such a good pair. You’re both charming and well-liked by others, though you can come across as intimidating at first to some people. You both possess the ability to bring out the best in those around you and make them feel valued. Because of these qualities and the fact you’re both Slytherins, you would literally be a power couple.
At first, I wasn’t sure about the Aries + Cancer compatibility, but I have a feeling you have other signs in your charts that lead you to each other - this is just too good of a pairing.
He’s always flirting with you, even when you’ve been dating for a significant amount of time. It reminds him of how you were when you first met; you’ll never leave the cupcake phase. He also likes to tease you about how shy you suddenly became around him when you first started dating. At this, you just flirt with him back which guarantees you a 60% success rate; sometimes it shuts him up, sometimes it eggs him on.
Will come to every single ballet recital of yours and gush over how graceful and talented you are - he’s your #1 fan. You’re also his #1 fan when you show up to his volleyball matches.
Man, Oikawa may be pretty, but the man has horrid taste in fashion *cue that One Cursed image* You often style him when you’re going out together, and it becomes something you have fun doing together. He gradually gets the hang of it, and now he’s able to pick out decent fits without your complete guidance.
Since you’re both super into skincare, you often have self-care nights together where you pamper yourselves and recommend each other your favorite products. Your lockscreen is this one really ugly pic of him in a sheet mask, and no matter how much he pleads, you aren’t changing it anytime soon.
Overall, I can see you just meshing well together. Your relationship would be one of those relationships where the energy after 10 years is the same as it was on the very first day you met.

Screenshots of the tweet on Facebook were flagged as part of the company’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed.

Raising more money does not necessarily translate into Election Day victory, but a big bank account helps U.S. parties support their candidates’ campaigns and pays for ads and polling.

Smith Lights Up Space City Open VI
Danny “The Shredder” Smith captured his first-ever Space City Open 9-Ball title, plowing through an 83-player field, undefeated, besting Roberto “Superman” Gomez in the first set of the true double elimination final, 9-3. Josh Roberts went undefeated in the 40-player, one pocket division, ousting John Morra in the first set, 3-2, taking home his first Space City Open One Pocket title. Jeremy “Double J” Jones went undefeated in the 9-ball banks division, taking down Tommy Tokoph in the first set, 3-2, earning himself a whopping fourth, banks division title. Wrapping up four long days of match play, the ladies 9-ball concluded on Sunday, with Gail “Virginia Slim” Eaton defeating Ming “The Empress” Ng, to capture her second, Space City Open title.
In its sixth year, the four-day, four-division, $6,000 added Space City Open VI (SCO) was held at Bogies Billiards and Sports Bar in Houston, Texas, November 30th – December 3rd, 2017, featuring top players from across America. This year’s line-up featured a cast of new talent, including Danny Smith, Roberto Gomez, John Morra, Jason Brown, and Kelly Isaac, along with numerous others. Admission was free, and fans enjoyed four days of top-notch pool, provided by world-class players.

In the 9-ball division, Danny Smith obliterated the field with wins over Marlin Griffith, 9-4, J.C. Torres, 9-3, Jeremy Jones, 9-7, and Alex Calderone, 9-4, while Jason “Jaybird” Brown took down Taylor Hobbs, 9-8, Curt Sheldon, Josh Roberts, 9-8, and James Davis, Jr., 9-2. Two-time Space City Open 9-Ball Champion, Charlie “Hillbilly” Bryant, made his way to the final four with victories over Mike Wilson, 9-2, David Twitty, 9-6, Kevin Guimond, 9-0, and Cesar Arechiga, 9-2, while Roberto “Superman” Gomez overcame Kenneth Price, 9-6, Randy Nickerson, 9-3, Chase Rudder, 9-5, and John Morra, 9-2. On the one loss side, Tommy Tokoph took out Roberts, 7-3, and Jones eliminated former pro C.J. Wiley, 7-1, while Yovani Salvia ousted Rudder, 7-4, and Jeff Chauncey destroyed Guimond, 7-1. Back on the east side, Gomez bested Bryant, 9-6, while Smith overwhelmed Brown, 9-4. Smith ran away with the hot seat match, defeating Gomez, 9-2. The one loss side witnessed Morra overpower Tokoph, 7-1, and Jones handily defeat Arechiga, 7-0. Davis, Jr. ended Rudder, 7-6, while Guimond dusted off Calderone, 7-4. Morra went on to eliminate Jones, 7-4, and Brown, 7-1, while Guimond overcame Davis, Jr., 7-3. Bryant squeezed by Guimond, 7-6, rounding out the final four players in the division. Morra was on a role, taking out Bryant, 7-2, to win his fourth match on the one loss side. He was stopped short by Gomez, 7-1, finishing in a respectable, third place. Gomez earned himself a rematch with Smith, and “The Shredder” was ready. With his spot-on break, it was a short-lived set for Gomez, much like the first. Smith shot out of the gate and never looked back, capturing the first set, 9-3, and his first, Space City Open 9-Ball title.
Last year, Josh Roberts finished runner-up in the one pocket division, but this year he came out on top. Roberts ran through a 40-player field, undefeated, booking wins over Jim McCary, Adam Cooper, and Ted Reeves, 3-1, while John Morra overcame Gabe Owen, Marvin Diaz, 3-0, and Sylver Ochoa, 3-1. Houston’s Ernesto Bayaua made his way to the final four with wins over Cliff Joyner, Dallas’ Gerardo Perez, 3-0, and Roberto Gomez, 3-1, while Justin Whitehead overwhelmed Curt Sheldon, 3-0, Corey Flud, 3-0, and Kent Berthelot, 3-1. On the one loss side, Davis, Jr. eliminated Ochoa, 3-1, Brown defeated Reeves, 3-0, and Diaz ended Berthelot, 3-1. Following an early hit at the hands of Roberts, Jeremy Jones won four matches, including victories over Jeff Bramblet, 3-0, Jeff Chauncey, 3-1, and Gomez, 3-1. As the final eight took shape, winners’ side matches witnessed Roberts edge out Morra, 3-2, and Whitehead dust off Bayaua, 3-1. Roberts wasted little time with Whitehead, capturing the hot seat, 3-0. Back on the west side, Brown denied Ochoa, 3-0, and Bayaua, 3-2, while Jones squeezed by Diaz, 3-2, falling in turn to Morra, by the same score. Morra made quick work of Whitehead, 3-0, moving on to Roberts, and the finals. In the first set, players were neck and neck. Tied at two a piece, an unforced error by Morra sealed his fate, and Roberts ended the set to secure his first, Space City Open One Pocket title.
Kicking off the four-day, billiard extravaganza, was the 26-player, 9-ball banks division, witnessing former Mosconi Cup MVP and former U.S. Open Champion, Jeremy Jones, capture his fourth Space City Open Banks title. Jones blazed a path through Kent Berthelot, 3-0, Gail Eaton, 3-0, and Roberto Gomez, 3-1, while Tommy Tokoph handled Ricki Casper, 3-0, former U.S. Open runner-up, Tan Hoa, 3-2, and Scotty Evans, 3-1. Former U.S. Open Champion, Gabe Owen, checked off Alfred Flores, 3-0, Richie Richeson, 3-0, and Jason “Jaybird” Brown, 3-1, while Cliff Joyner overwhelmed Beaumont’s Carl Honey, 3-0, Will Felder, 3-1, and Alan Myers, 3-1. On the one loss side, John Morra took out Berthelot, while Roberto Gomez ousted James Davis, Jr., 3-1. Canadian Alex Olinger ended Alan Myers, 3-2, while Josh Roberts handled Jason Brown, 3-1. Down to the final eight, on the east side, Jones defeated Tokoph, 3-1, and Owen slid by Joyner, 3-1. In a speedy, hot seat match, Jones crushed Owen, 3-0. Back on the west side, Gomez eliminated Morra, but fell to Joyner, 3-1, while Roberts took out Myers, 3-0, falling to Tokoph in the next round, 3-0. Tokoph was on the war path, sending home Joyner, 3-2, and Owen, 3-2, reaching Jones, and the finals. Players teed off, both keeping pace as the set progressed. Tied at two a piece, Jones inched ahead in the final game, closing out the set to defend his 2016 title and secure his fourth banks title.
Wrapping up Space City, 24 women battled it out on Sunday for over $2,400 in cash in the ladies 9-ball division. Gail “Virginia Slim” Eaton came out firing, ousting Terry “The Terrorizer” Petrosino, Calaia Jackson, 7-1, and Toledo’s Kelly Isaac, 7-6, while Ming “The Empress” Ng made her way to the final four with wins over Cindy Ferry, Nayla Hoak, and Joyce Davis. Angleton’s Brandi Booth came out firing, securing victories over Ricki Casper, 7-3, and Robyn Petrosino, 7-6, while Teresa “The Princess of Pool” Garland took down Alicia Huff, 7-5, and Yvonne Asher, 7-1. On the west side, Isaac eliminated Denton’s Amy Jones, 5-2, and T. Petrosino reined in Davis, 5-3. Natalie Mans squeezed by Asher, 5-4, and R. Petrosino extinguished Yvonne Ramirez, 5-2. Down to the final eight, east side action saw Isaac eliminate T. Petrosino, 5-3, and Garland, 5-4, while Mans dusted off R. Petrosino, 5-1, in turn, falling to Ng, by the same score. Ng went on to eliminate Isaac, 5-4, and Booth, 5-1, earning herself a rematch with Eaton. In the first set of the true, double elimination final, Ng served Eaton her first loss, 7-6, and the finals ventured into overtime. Players displayed poise and composure in the late hour, but only one player could wear the crown. Players fought for every game, but it was Eaton who pulled ahead to end the second set, 5-3, capturing her second, Space City Open 9-ball title.

Top 6 Roofing Materials
From wood shake to asphalt shingles, roofing material is an important consideration that contributes to the overall look and style of your home. Updating your existing roof allows you to add value to your home and communicate your home's look and feel. While roof framing, preparation, and proper installation are always important, the material you choose for your roof can bring the exterior of your home to the next level. "It's really an opportunity to upgrade your home in terms of look, style, and color," says Tom Bollnow, senior director of technical services for the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA).
When choosing roofing materials, consider the following questions.
How heavy is this material and will it require special framing? Is the material available in a variety of colors and styles that complement your home? Does the material meet the fire codes in your local area? Are there special installation and maintenance issues to consider? Does this material offer good performance in extreme weather conditions that are common in your area? What is the cost, lifespan, and warranty for this product? The answers to those questions will help you determine the best choice for your home. There are lots of options for roofing materials available and here is a rundown of some of the most popular ones.
Asphalt Shingles
The most common residential roofing material used in the United States, asphalt shingles are popular because they are economical and easy to install. These shingles can be reinforced with fiberglass or organic materials (cellulose) without changing the appearance of the shingle. Pros: Asphalt comes in a variety of colors, is widely available and is one of the least expensive materials. Cons: Asphalt has a shorter lifespan than other roofing materials, doesn't provide the insulation other materials offer, and the quality varies. House Styles: Asphalt shingles work with many architectural styles, especially traditional suburban styles. Cost and Life Span: Prices range from $70 to $120 a square and, if maintained properly, shingles will last 20 to 25 years.
Clay and Concrete Tiles
Clay and concrete tiles add texture and elegance to a roof. Genuine flat, ribbed or scalloped clay tiles are extremely durable but also very heavy, and must be installed by a professional. Concrete tiles are versatile and are less expensive than genuine clay, but also have a heavyweight. Pros: Clay and concrete tiles are long-lasting and non-combustible, and concrete tiles are energy efficient. Cons: Clay and concrete tiles are expensive, heavy and usually require additional framing. House Styles: Clay and concrete tiles work well with Mediterranean, Mission, Southwestern and Spanish-style homes. Cost and Life Span: Prices start around $300 to $500 a square and, if maintained properly, tiles will last around 40 to 50 years.
Metal Roofing
Metal roofs are resistant to extreme weather conditions. Available in two types, panels, and shingles, metal roofs come in aluminum, copper, stainless steel and zinc. "They're sleek, lightweight, long-lasting and recyclable, and something to consider if you're interested in rainwater harvesting," says architect Amy A. Alper. Pros: Metal roofing is durable, lasts longer than asphalt or wood, and offers high solar reflectance. Cons: Metal roofing is relatively expensive. House Styles: Metal looks great on bungalows, cabins, contemporary and cottage-style homes. Cost and Life Span: Prices usually start around $100 to $300 a square, but some styles can cost $600 to $800 a square. Metal roofing can last 40 to 75 years.
Slate
Offering lots of beauty and a distinctive elegant appearance, slate colors include shades of black, green, grey, red and purple. Pros: Slate is very durable, fire-resistant and a sustainable roof that can be recycled. Cons: Slate is expensive, heavy, and requires extra framing and professional installation. The quality can vary with imported slate. House Styles: Slate works well with Colonial, European and French chateau homes. Cost and Life Span: Prices start at about $600 a square and up. Slate can last more than 50 years and sometimes 100 years or more.
Wood Shingles and Shake
The go-to roofing choice for hundreds of years, many homeowners love the look of wood shingles and shakes and how they weather to an attractive shade of gray. Wood shakes are handmade and rougher-looking than wood shingles, which are usually cut by machine. If you live in a fire-prone area, look for Class A fire-rated wood roofing products that include shingles treated with a fire-resistant coating. Pros: Wood shingles offer a rustic look and are a natural product usually made from cedar, redwood and southern pine. Cons: Fire codes in some areas prohibit use. Wood shingles can be a concern in wet climates and can mold, split or rot. House Styles: Shake's rustic aesthetic pairs well with bungalow, Cape Cod, cottage, Craftsman and Tudor-style homes. Cost and Life Span: Prices start at around $100 to $150 a square and will last around 25 to 30 years. Remember, estimates are always free, and financing is available. The history of my videos.
When I started making videos in around 2008, I used a kidizoom camera that I got for Christmas. I instantly fell in love with taking pictures and making videos of absolutely anything and everything. At that time I hadn't learned how to edit properly - the camera I used had a little video trimmer installed on the actual camera, as well as a feature where you can add short intros. A couple of years later in the year 2010, I discovered windows movie maker (at the time I was using my family 'Hi-Grade' laptop running Windows XP Home Edition), I was obsessed. I immediately started editing my videos into little movies, and I even made a studio company name Rhys Productions, here is one of the many videos I made with windows movie maker;
youtube
At this time, I didn't post my videos to youtube because - well - I wasn't allowed. Sometimes I would post my videos to a website called kidstube, sometimes i would put them on msn or email them to people. And sometimes I would make animations and interactive programs on this website called Scratch (https://scratch.mit.edu/users/Nintendokid1078/), I had made a couple of internet friends on Scratch during 2011. I don't talk to any of them anymore though. At this time I was obsessed with 3 things; Super Mario, Moshi Monsters and the computer. Any penny I ever had in my possession at this time would go towards those three things, I had filled my life with all things involved with them, and I dragged my friends into them too. I continued making videos using windows movie maker from 2010 - 2012 and even into early 2013.
I made a character on KidsTube named charlie, before I pulled charlie off the site and re-edited the videos pretending like he never was going to be on kidstube. I'm not sure why I did this, maybe because kidstube was very glitchy and hardly ever uploaded my videos correctly. Here is a clip of the charlie character:
youtube
I actually love watching that video back, it gives me a lot of good memories. The best years of my life so far has been between 2009 and 2013. On Christmas 2012, I got a samsung galaxy tab 2. At the time this was a really good tablet, and it ran android (I think it was Android Ice Cream Sandwhich but I'm not sure), I thought it was really nice, you had to create a google account though, and with a google account comes a YOUTUBE ACCOUNT! I told my parents I made a channel and they were ok with it as long as I didn't do anything dangerous. I called my channel '54superchoco', I started posting MS Paint slideshow animations, in the form of a show called The 'Chocolate Show' which was inspired my Amy Winfrey's 'Muffin Films' - a webshow about human-like muffins made in the year 2000. I managed to gain a small audience of about 30 people, and someone even made a fanpage about me. This was insane to me. I never thought anyone would watch my videos other than my parents and a couple of my friends from school. Back then on youtube, things were different. YouTube used their 'cosmic panda' layout, there were still channel backgrounds (which i loved) and the community was not as big as it is now. It was still giant, but now it has gotten so big that it's hard to find any new creators. In March 2013, I got bored of the name 54superchoco and decided to make a new channel, called "RhysKellyProductions" - I wanted it to just be rhysproductions but it was took, and at this time you could not change your channel name. I started posting LOADS of different videos there, like stop motion, vlogs, reviews, interactive videos, short films, collabs and more. My family got a new iMac computer in early 2013 and of coarse I was excited, I started editing my videos with iMovie and later Final Cut Pro, it was CRAZY FAST. If you are a mac user, you know apple are great with creative software, my mac came bundled with iLife and I was ready to continue making videos, as well as editing some pictures and audio. Of coarse I'm MUCH better at video, but I wanted to experiment with my online life by trying new things. Later that year, my cousin Lauren showed me this app on her iPad called 'Video Star' in which you could make your own lip dub music videos and add special effects. I started adding those to my channel and it opened my audience to hundreds of new people. In 2014, I deleted 54superchoco, I now regret that as there were some videos which I wish I still had - completely gone. I also deleted a whole bunch of videos on my new channel. I learned how to edit music videos on iMovie on my mac too, so I was making music videos on videostar AND iMovie.
In the year 2015 my internet life changed forever. I did change my name from RhysKellyProductions to just 'rhysproductions', but that's not what was important.
I opened a channel called EpicCrazyCollab, a collab channel where people could audition to get in, then post videos to each week's themes. I remember running it with my friend Leah, we chose the members who we liked the most. In fact, the auditions were so good that it was really hard to choose. But we picked some people who would end up being great friends to us. The collab consisted of me, Leah, Amy, Lauren M, Lauren D, Maeve, Courteney (aka Charlie), Franky, Marcus (my brother) and Sean. We ended up talking on oovoo - (a video chat application) - for hours every day, especially in the summer. We were very close, we had even talked to each other's personal friends from their hometowns, even their siblings ect. We had some great memories that I'll never forget. Until one day. The channel... GOT HACKED
We were of coarse extremely upset, but we restarted in high hopes, not realizing the channel would come crumbling down again. We restarted several times, but we all just slowly drifted away from each other and we decided to finally end the channel. I sometimes still talk to some of them, but very rarely. But in the year 2015, my channel was at it's peek. I went from 300 subscribers to like 500 subscribers in one night, then it only got better, I kept entering contests and won them, I gained many subscribers and I felt really good about how my channel was going.
In 2016, I started a collab channel called collabintheclouds, that channel also eventually crumbled but I am still friends with most of the members. But, that year my channel got a copyright strike, forcing me to move to my backup channel, I didn't want my rhysproductions channel to go to waste so i spammed the hell out of it with old videos that I THOUGHT people would enjoy. But I was wrong. I lost 100 subscribers in one day, I never felt so bad about my internet life as much as i did then. There was also a sub glitch at that time so I was losing subs because of that also. I was close to 1,250 but then it dropped to about 1,100. That you to the people that stayed with me during that time. I moved back to my rhysproductions channel with high hopes, but meh... I'm happy I did move back, because my backup channel's videos are cringe worthy and stupid. At this time I was also using vidbit, a website that looked exactly like how youtube looked in early 2009. I loved vidbit, but in november, they shut down. I was so angry. I couldn't believe they turned their back on the community. Treating us as if we hadn't done anything good to them. But... a twitter account called 'vidbitfuture' appeared out of nowhere, I instantly got my hopes up, I was one of the first followers. And then, after befriending the community behind vbf, I'm became a beta tester, and I LOVE it.

Kozume Kenma ♡‧₊˚
Ok,, hear me out because this one might seem a little unexpected. I didn’t match you with him purely because you both love to play video games - there’s an actual basis here. You both seemed like opposites at first glance, but when I read it over again, I realized just how compatible you are.
Like yourself, Kenma is someone who isn’t the most extroverted person off the bat. However, you tend to warm up to others easily, while he prefers to let only a select few in. I feel like relationships need balance, so your ability to eventually get along with others definitely helps him - not be a social butterfly, per say - but open up a bit more.

You guys are always taking naps together like,, best nap partners.
He thinks you’re a complete badass because you do kickboxing; he may not outwardly express it, but there’s always a small smile on your face when he sees how cool you look.
