“Afsaane” by Ameya Bondre
Ameya Bondre has penned a collection of short stories revolving around unrequited love, hope, acceptance, heart breaks or just needs, which are sure to strike a chord among readers from all walks of life. Published by BlueRose Publishers, ‘Afsaane’ was recently released at the World Book Fair 2020 in Delhi. Summary of the stories: A sky-blue paper bird glued to a mirror. A handmade book on music to be gifted. A pair of mud brown tea cups without handles. A shelf to hoard dying memories. A little home tucked away in a remote village. A haunting voice after boarding an empty bus… These images belong to people whose stories are packed in this book: A man who meets his lost friend in a new world. A seeker who resists everyone to reach an unwanted place. Lovers that separate, only to find some hope. A failed artist who finds another voice. A new entrant in a home who creates turmoil. A cheated girl who makes a desperate call. A shattered man who pegs on a sudden dreamy trip. With eleven stories of unrequited love, hope, acceptance, heartbreaks or just needs, ‘Afsaane’ will tug at your heartstrings and open windows to people who experience unusual situations in far too usual lives. Ameya is a physician and public health researcher, currently working with a healthcare technology start-up associated with IIT-Bombay. Born and raised in Mumbai, he studied at KEM Hospital, and later at Johns Hopkins University, USA. Ameya’s professional life has been rewarding with honours from Johns Hopkins, Tufts, MIT, Yale and TEDx, and several academic publications. KONNICHIWA FROM TOKYO, JAPAN ☼
I used to hate Japan.
For no logical reason, I like hating the things that most people already love. More so than that, I also like contradicting the likes of my boyfriend. Again, for no sensible explanation. It’s just fun.
He has been suggesting Japan for the longest time because of his crazy love for anime. I was always reluctant to go because I thought I won’t be able to enjoy the country as much as he would and that’s unfair.
After putting much time in research, I was finally convinced that the country might have some things to offer in my liking. I decided to give it a go and make Mitch the happiest man on earth.
We only had 7 days in Japan so we both decided that it’s best to utilize our stay in Tokyo. It was also the best decision because we’re not fit for moving from places to places considering how messy we are with our things once we get settled in a hotel room. Moreover, packing light is not my forte.
We stayed around Shinjuku in our little airbnb! We decided not to stay in a hotel because aside from the airbnb being cheaper, we also wanted to try and live like the locals do.
The first photos I had of Japan was in my original SD card. Just when we arrived in Japan, my SD card got full so I had to borrow Mitch’s. I’m pretty sure that I had a photo of our cute little apartment in Shinjuku in my original SD card which is now broken. Anyway, I found a photo of me that Mitch took in our apartment if it’s of any help. Hehe
I’m so happy we were able to tick off all the things that we intended to do in Japan! I made a day to day itinerary that we had to follow to make sure that we get to visit every tourist spot in my long list.
As the days went along, I felt more impressed by the country.
Our first ever stop was the Meiji Shrine.
They had this spot where you’re able to write down your hopes and wishes.
I was able to read some of them and I think wala pa ding forever. Chos
People who go through the shrine have to wash their hands in here. Some of them even drink from here. I can only guess it’s some sort of cleansing but I’m not really sure. Hindi ako nakapag research. LOL
Japan was hot for us because back in Canada, we live in a town where it’s either freezing cold or keri lang na cold. In short, we’re used to low daily temperatures. Hence on our very first day, talaga namang pawis na pawis kami.
This didn’t stop us from going around.
Although I’m not a big fan of cats or animals in general, we still went to a cat cafe because who doesn’t go to a cat cafe when you see one?!?!?!
We also went to Takeshita Street a.k.a. SHOPPING PARADISE
Mars, andito ka pala.
On our first night, we went to Shibuya to meet with a Japanese friend who worked with us back in Canada. She brought us to a fishing restaurant where you literally have to fish for your food before you eat.
Thank God Mitch was able to catch one because if they were to depend on me, wala kaming makakain pang gabihan. Hahaha!
Kristina, our Japanese friend, also brought us to a place full of selfie vending machines! You can rent costumes and dress up however you like and get your photos taken inside the machine. After editing your own photos, it prints out some hard copies!
How convenient is this for selfie addicts like me?!
Apparently, this is a craze going on in Japan. I loved it!
If you’re reading this, thank you Kristina for bringing us around! Arigato gozaimasu!
Our next few days were nothing short of interesting.
From my experience, there is always something weird and cool going on in Japan.
We saw these shirts when we went to Ameya Yokocho, a famous shopping district for cheap finds. Parang Divisoria.
Japan believes that every boobs are okay.
We also went to a park which is just nearby (and I forgot the name).
It was a huge park and syempre pawis na pawis na naman kami. We ended up having a snack in a little cafe which sells these cute designs of bread!
Japan really is a place for foodies!
We went to the Tsukiji Fish Market to get a taste of the best local foods around Tokyo and it did not disappoint!
We ate in this sushi place where the food gets served in a train like way. It goes around to everybody and you just pick your choice. If you want super fresh sushi, this is the place to be.
On the exact same day, we also went to Akihabara. This is the place to be if you’re an avid fan of anime, a gamer, a collector or just fond of seeing odd but interesting things like me. This is Mitch’s haven by the way.
Aside from the massive hoarding that Mitch did in Akihabara, we also went to a maid cafe. If you haven’t noticed by now, themed cafes are a thing in Japan. Name it, they have it. If you’re wondering what a maid cafe is all about, according to Wikipedia:
Maid cafés are a subcategory of cosplay restaurants found predominantly in Japan. In these cafés, waitresses dressed in maid costumes act as servants, and treat customers as masters (and mistresses) in a private home, rather than as café patrons.
We’re not allowed to take photos or videos inside the cafe aside from the food or the paid photo op with our maid that was part of the whole package.
We kept on trying to make a serious conversation with our maid who looks like she was from another country. We were curious as to how she can speak such fluent Japanese when she’s not even from Japan. With no luck, the only answer that I got is: “I am demon fairy from a faraway place, Princess Yale!”
As kawaii as this place presents to be, there is still something odd about it. The majority of the customers were alone adult men who want to “play” with the maids. In fact, I was the only girl in the cafe besides the maids. Without the glitz and glamour of the place, I would think the cafe resembles something else.
Anyway, we also got to the famous Sensoji Temple!
Can you spot Mitch?
On our way there, we rode a Japanese rickshaw which they call a jinrikisha. According to our driver, it was the Japanese version of a Cadillac back in the old days. This is one of the things not to miss in Japan.
It resembles a kalesa back in the Philippines, only this time it’s a man who carries the carriage and not a horse.
We had so much fun riding the jinrikisha! As if the ride wasn’t cool enough, our driver lived in Canada for a period of time too! We were able to talk about a lot of things. I hope he didn’t mind our combined weight on the way.
We were also very lucky to have made it in a time where they closed a part of the road in Shinjuku. It was the perfect time for photos.
I also want to point out that the food they serve in 7/11 in Japan is DELICIOUS. I don’t even know where to start. I could survive just by eating here everyday. You have to try to believe.
On our last night in Japan, we watched a show at the famous Tokyo Robot Restaurant. I have seen awesome shows in New York and Las Vegas, but boy their show is a whole different version of amazing!
Let the photos do the talking.
Doesn’t this girl look like Nadine Lustre?! Lol
Japan is an amazing country with so much to offer. I was wrong for assuming that it’s only a place for people like Mitch who adores anime. As it turns out, it’s also a place for me in so many good ways. If I’m to be asked what my favourite country is up to date, it would probably be Japan. I’d come back in that country in a blink.
