We already know about Sunny's, but what are other characters' favourite things to eat? What do they like to drink?
Basil: espresso/americano/capuccino to drink, and for food something comforting and warm, like beef stew or something. he tried going vegan like a hundred times but he's not ready for the commitment. i think he would go for angel cake as a dessert, or just granola bars.
Aubrey: alcohol probably, coke on casual days and as a favourite dish i think she would really enjoy sushi or ratatouille. her favourite dessert would probably be donuts, m&ms, or peeps.
Kel: orange joe for a drink, obvi, and i feel like he would enjoy crazy american combos like bacon and waffles, deep fried anything, probably raising canes, oh and empanadas. for dessert he would probably go for... the entire breakfast menu? i'm sure he's a big waffle/pancake/torrijas fan, and also sour gummies.
Hero: probably plain ol black coffee, blueberry lemonade or sparkling water (he's one of those..), milkshakes too. For food I think he likes trying out new things from time to time so his favourites change pretty often. his go to sweets would be... fruit tarts, tiramisu or chocolate chip cookies.
Jamie: Jamie loves decaf lattes, and sodas, and for food probably some classic chicken nuggets with fries, and birthday cake flavoured sweets. they've got a huge sweet tooth, so anything would do, except hard candy.
Brent: he loves coffee and hot cocoa, especially accompanied by a treat. for food, i would say he likes jollof rice, salads with all kinds of dressings, anything beef and a lot of salty snacks. he would always snack on some chips. for sweets, i'm inclined to say lava cake with ice cream on the side. he likes chocolate bars too, like snickers and bounty. he's got a full drawer of snacks in his room because his mom wouldn't let him eat too many while growing up.
Ash: he loves coffee to the point that it's a personality trait, and he usually gets a flavoured latte. avocado toast and sunny side up eggs for breakfast, alfredo pasta and salad for lunch, and fish with vegetables for dinner, specifically salmon. for dessert, he would go for a cinnamon roll or rugelach.
think that's it. for me i love lattes and dr pepper, and for food probably something really lame like a mcchicken or chilly cheese fries or pasta. for sweets.. i don't know. everything at once. i love chocolate and anything with a soft chewy texture.

i love ur little rambles so what do u think the losers coffee orders and music taste is (in hey sharpshooter or otherwise) 🤲
ooooo oooo ooo yes yes yes
((TORTOISE LORE on the days i have to work onsite at my job i almost exclusively set up shop at the coffee place across from the office & listen to my little music & drink my little beverages all day so this particular set of questions resonates with me so bad))
for consistency's sake coffee-wise let's say we're talking starbucks. i think most days sirius would go for something high in caffeine but with a little sweetness to it. a venti iced shaken espresso with oat milk and three pumps of classic sweetener, perhaps. maybe switch that classic out for chestnut praline at the holidays bc he's feeling festive. other days i think he'd want an absolute sugar bomb as a reward for getting through a rough week or bc he was really mature today and refrained from screeching at people in the street when they didn't walk fast enough & blocked the sidewalk when he was in a hurry. on those days he requires a big ole mocha cookie crumble frap or an iced cinnamon dolce latte with an extra shot for fun.
on his walk home he's listening to one of three playlists depending on the day. the first one is a fourteen hour pop girlie playlist that starts with style by taylor swift and ends with kiss me more by doja cat, with some ariana, gaga, spice girls, charli, no doubt, & even some abba thrown in the middle for spice. the second playlist is for mocha cookie crumble days and starts with your best american girl by mitski and features lots of phoebe, lots of taylor, lots of lana, some ethel cain for sure, some select fleetwood mac, maybe some stuff from the 1975's a brief inquiry album. it's all stuff he can dig into & be angsty with & have strong feelings to.
the third is a more generic thought-dump kind of playlist where he just throws in songs he likes. buttercup by hippo campus. the view from the afternoon by arctic monkeys. concussion by girlhouse. ilysb by lany. like....,.,moonage daydream. 6 inch. pink pony club. bring it on home. just a mix of vibes and genres & things he gets stuck in his head.
contrary to popular belief i do think remus is a coffee girlie and would pick a mug of good dark roast drip over tea any day. i think he's simple for the most part & would go after a good tall americano on days he needs the kickstart but a grande drip with light cream would be his everyday go-to. during the summers he switches to a cold brew or plain iced coffee with cold foam if he's feeling fancy. he likes to pretend he doesn't like the frilly expensive drinks but every time he & sirius get coffee together, sirius orders him a grande mocha with two extra pumps of mocha and whipped cream on top & he downs it in about eight seconds.
remus is a hozier stan confirmed. remus is a boygenius stan confirmed. he likes poetic lyrics more than anything so sirius puts him on mitski and taylor. i like the idea that his music taste was a little outdated most of his life bc his parents had a huge record collection that they inherited from his grandparents so he just....played music all the time as a lonely little kid looking for things to do. when he was nine the only album he listened to all christmas break was otis redding's the dock of the bay & that made him gravitate toward stuff like leon bridges & amy winehouse as he got older. he learned about spotify four years after everyone else did & still only has two playlists. his parents loved the 90s rock girlies and they listened to a lot of the cranberries and fiona apple CDs around the house, so all those albums are really nostalgic for him now. he puts sirius on jeff buckley & regrets it instantly bc literally all he does now is play remus' grace vinyl full-volume and remus is afraid they're going to get a noise complaint. you can hear it in the stairwell sirius the neighbors are going to get mad please

23 Most Skimmable Guide to Common Types of Coffee Brewings
Tumblr media
Coffee's Humble Start What started as an accidental discovery by a goat herder in Ethiopia has now turned into a drink that millions all over the world regularly depend on, and in different consumption forms, i.e., types of coffee brewing method. Over time, coffee, the drink, is brewed using different kinds of equipment and methods. Many countries have their own methods coffee brewing the drink with different ratios of liquids and adding flavors. Here is the list that explains the 23 most common types of coffee of brewing methods, flavors, and drinking traditions from hundreds, if not thousands, types of coffee in the world. This list is in alphabetical order for your easy reference. Here Are the 23 Common Types of Coffee In Alphabetical Order Common Types of Coffee: Affogato An affogato is an Italian indulgence made by pouring a hot espresso shot over a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The intense, punchy espresso combined with creamy, decadent ice cream is a heaven-made match. It can be made with any type of espresso, blonde, ristretto, or even decaf, topped with chocolate, caramel drizzle, or crushed biscotti. There are more creative ways to make an affogato, such as stacking the ice cream over a brownie or cookie or using different flavors of ice cream, like chocolate, caramel, or many more. However, an affogato-style drink at Starbucks means pouring a hot shot of espresso over a finished blended Frappuccino, which is totally different from its original recipe.
Tumblr media
Affogato In a Short Glass Cup with a Saucer and a Desert Spoon Americano Americanos are made with espresso, a type of concentrated coffee that requires high water pressure, and dark roast, finely ground beans. Drip coffee is made with a medium-coarse coffee grind mixing slow and low-pressure water intake, thus, drip coffee is milder in flavor and caffeine. Americanos are sweeter and punchier because the fast-brewing time allows more of the natural flavor compounds to escape dissolving. In hot Americanos, the espresso shot is poured over a mug of hot water, therefore, the first sips are strongest in coffee taste and full of luscious crema for a smooth and full-bodied mouthfeel. The iced Americanos are reversed, and the espresso is poured over ice followed by cold water.
Tumblr media
Milk is Poured Over a Tall Glass of Iced Americano Bulletproof Dave Asprey, an American computing exec was trekking in the mountains of Tibet to learn meditation from Buddhist pilgrims when a woman served him a local brew: tea mixed with yak butter. In 2010, inspired by this experience, Dave started his company Brain Octane Oil and launched bulletproof coffee, a blend that mixes coffee with butter. The bulletproof coffee is made with one cup of brewed coffee, 1 to 2 tablespoons of oil, and 1 to 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter or ghee, then blend them till the coffee turns creamy. It is a low-carb and high-fat meal replacement for breakfast. One cup of bulletproof coffee packs in 240 to 350 calories and contains more than the maximum daily recommended intake of saturated fats. With its high calories, anyone can go through the morning without feeling hungry. However, it lacks protein and other essential nutrients for the human body.
Tumblr media
Bulletproof Coffee with a Dish of Butter and a Dish of Coconut Oil Café au Lait Cafés au lait is made with French press prepared coffee, either French roast or very dark roast, and steamed milk. There should be equal parts brewed coffee and milk which can be whisked or frothed. This silky beverage is smooth and balanced, with a mild coffee flavor and low caffeine. Café au lait may taste quite plain, so sometimes adding a dash of cinnamon powder can spice up the drink for a tasty experience.
Tumblr media
A Tall Glass of Cafe au Lait with Cream On Top and Spiced up with Cinnamon Powder Caffè Breve Caffè Breve is entirely an American invention. Made with a shot of espresso, steamed half-and-half, and a layer of milk foam, caffè breve has more foam than the average milk-based espresso coffee. Because half-and-half is one-part whole milk and one-part light cream, steaming it and adding it to coffee makes a coffee beverage very rich and creamy. Caffè breve is often served as a dessert instead of a morning pick-me-up.
Tumblr media
Cafe Breve is Among The Espresso Drinks In the Price List of a Cafe Cappuccino Cappuccino is an espresso-based java that comes from an Austrian drink called kapuziner. Inspired by the dark color of robes worn by Kapuzin friars of Austria in the 1700s, kapuziner was made with coffee, milk, sugar, and a swirl of whipped cream on top. Today’s cappuccino was concocted by Italians in the 1900s for whom cappuccino was the ideal morning coffee that could be drunk in a handful of gulps for a quick jolt of caffeine. The method of making a cappuccino differs between coffee institutions. Usually, a 1:1:1 ratio of espresso, steamed milk, and foamed milk is followed in the U.S. When brewed by a skilled barista, the steamed milk and milk foam will form layers over the espresso instead of blending into it. These layers visibly distinguish a cappuccino from other milk-based espresso coffees, such as mocha. Thus, a cappuccino usually tastes more intense than its milky counterparts and highlights the flavor of the coffee beans much better while giving a creamier mouthfeel.
Tumblr media
A Cup of Cappuccino With A Teal Color Saucer On An Open Book About Flora Cold Brew Cold brew is made by steeping coffee grounds in cold or room-temperature water for at least 12 hours. Over time, the caffeine, oil, and sugar from the grounds seep into the water to produce a refreshing coffee that is smooth in taste. Hot water brings out the acids from a coffee, making it astringent and often requiring milk to undercut the unpleasant flavor. Cold brew is relatively low in acidity and adding milk can make the coffee smoother. Compared to iced coffee requires the use of ice, which melts and dilutes the coffee, cold brew packs the full kick of a coffee without diluting any flavor.
Tumblr media
Milk is Poured Over an Iced Cold Brew Coffee In a Short Glass Drip/brewed coffee The possibilities for drip or brewed coffee are infinite, which could consist of coffeemakers, percolators, pour-overs, or French presses. There are 15 different ways to roast coffee plus numerous ways to change the taste of coffee, including bean grind, water volume, and a drip/brewed coffee can be fun. Light roast coffee is more acidic and milder, with slightly higher caffeine content compared to other roast methods. Medium and medium-dark roasts are richer and slightly bittersweet, dark roasts are smoky and bold with less caffeine. The recommended method when brewing coffee is two tablespoons of ground coffee per six ounces of water.
Tumblr media
Hot Water Is Poured Over A Glass Drip Brew Coffee Pot Espresso Con Panna Espresso con panna is a shot of espresso served with a swirl of whipped cream on top. Espresso con panna might have Turkish heritage, as it is customarily served in the small demitasse cup often used for Turkish coffee. If a person is in need of a quick sweet caffeine kick, a shot of hot espresso with a dollop of whipped cream on top will definitely be a satisfying experience!
Tumblr media
A Cup of Espresso Con Panna Espresso martini Made with high-quality espresso and top-shelf vodka, the espresso martini is a smooth, edgy drink perfect for starting a night out or keeping one awake till late at night or early morning. The coffee liqueur, Kahlúa, makes the espresso flavor vibrant and robust, and the syrup helps to keep the espresso martini sweet. To make the espresso martini, one needs to combine two ounces of vodka, one-half ounce of coffee liqueur, one ounce of espresso, and one-half ounce of simple syrup in a shaker filled with ice. Give it a good shake, then strain the martini into a chilled glass and garnish with coffee beans.
Tumblr media
Espresso Martini In a Martini Glass Espresso Romano Espresso Romano might be invented in the 1950s when Italy was troubled with a coffee shortage due to the limitations posed on the import of beans after the Second World War. Italians started adding lemon to mask the poor quality and inferior flavor of cheap instant coffee sourced from American soldiers. Nowadays, espresso Romano is a term used for a range of hot, cold, and iced coffees that feature lemon. The citrus flavor can come from lemon slices, lemon juice, or lemon peels. Often, espresso Romano is served as a shot of espresso with sugar and lemon. The sharp citrus intensifies the bold flavors of the espresso while sugar is added to cut the sour flavor of the lemon.
Tumblr media
A Cup of Espresso Romano Flat White A flat white is an espresso-based coffee made with steamed milk and a thin layer of milk foam. It may sound much like a latte, but compared to a latte, a flat white has a higher proportion of espresso to milk. The flat white is usually a 5 oz drink compared to a latte that is 8 oz in size.  Another significant difference between a latte and a flat white is that a latte is made with steamed milk, and a flat white is made with finely textured steamed milk, called micro-foam. This micro-foam milk makes a flat white creamier in texture with a stronger coffee taste than a latte, at the same time a flat white has more liquid than the strong and thick foamed cappuccino. Frappé The icy coffee Frappé has become synonymous with summer afternoons by the beach. Legend says that Frappé was accidentally invented by a Greek reporter in the 1950s. However, Starbucks trademarked the Frappuccino, other cafés have to use "frappé" for their ice-blended beverages.  A classic frappé is made with good old Nescafé instant coffee powder, water, and sugar. The mix is either shaken or blended until frothy, then served over ice. One frappé often uses 2 tablespoons of instant coffee powder which means it packs in the punch of four shots of espresso!
Tumblr media
A Glass of Frappe Overlooking Sunset in the Distance Irish coffee Irish coffee is a cocktail classic. A proper, delicious Irish coffee, uses two parts fresh-brewed coffee, one part blended Irish whiskey, sugar to one’s desired sweetness, and a thick blanket of runny whipped cream on top. It is the best drink to warm up on a cold dark rainy day.
Tumblr media
Two Glasses of Irish Coffee Latte The caffè latte was invented in 1867 for American tourists in Italy for whom the Italian cappuccino was too strong. Latte is the less intense and considerably milkier version of a cappuccino for not-so-strong coffee-loving Americans. Usually, a latte is served in a glass and contains mainly espresso and steamed milk with only a thin layer of foam on top. The high quantity of milk masks the flavor of the espresso, making it a great option for Americans and alike who do not care much about the coffee flavor and only want the coffee for its caffeine punch. The milky taste of a latte with a mild hint of espresso is more popular when adding all sorts of syrups and flavors than any other hot coffee. Read the full article

an academic andreil headcanon
so they both go to the same uni
Neil lives with Stuart, Andrew moved to Germany with Nicky when Nicky got custody of them
it’s Edinburgh uni, sorry but I gotta work with what I know
also Neil is Scottish sorry I don’t make the rules, he is from Largs, tell me otherwise. that accent? wonderful
Neil is in his first year, Andrew his second.
Neil works at a local cafe called Hula, and that's where he meets the upperclassmen, a rag tag group of vegans who love to protest the climate crisis outside of Holyrood building
Neil studies maths and French, Andrew studies sociology and German
they first meet in the library, first floor, where all the cubicles are. Andrew is hogging a whole cubicle for himself, and Neil and a weirdly friendly classmate want to study and talk. neil doesn't really want to talk but he also promised matt he would make friends in his classes
Neil sees the cubicle and shoves all his stuff down on the table before seeing Andrew reading in the corner of it.
Andrew gives him a ferocious glare to scare him off that usually works but Neil just grins and says sorry, could they have the cubicle
Andrew the little shit he is, says no. Neil calls him an entitled American.
thus their feud begins
Andrew works at the local cafe called Salut, run by a lovely couple (abby and Wymack hehe)
the upperclassmen take Neil there every Friday after the climate rallies to warm up
Neil orders an Americano
he receives a hideously sweet concoction with whipped cream, and a side biscuit.
Andrew finds it ridiculous anyone would want to drink something as ghastly and boring as an Americano
Neil tracks down Andrew in his usual cubicle, and sits in it with him, blatantly disregarding the death Andrew is promising with his eyes.
he does his math while listening to his music, which potentially might be on full volume, and it might be hideous songs that Allison insists are “cultural resets.
Andrew does not agree with the sentiment
it escalates from there. there were rubber ducks involved at one point. and ice cream. and Neil is never trusting anything he orders from uber eats again.
the studying together continues though. except Andrew isn't studying, he's reading, which is what some people do for fun Neil.
Neil joins cross country, where he finds Kevin, who happens to be Andrews best friend. duh.
Neil gets invited by Kevin to a flat party, and lo behold, there is Andrew.
seeing Andrew wearing a grey sweater instead of his usual black get up makes Neil’s stomach grow flowers that continue to bloom every time he looks at him.
Andrew looks bored to be there. Neil doesn't know anyone else, with Kevin being extremely preoccupied with a certain Jeremy Knox. so he goes to talk to him.
and it turns out they actually like talking. they have a lot to say. Andrew likes calling Neil names, and Neil likes taking the piss out of the fact Andrew calls biscuits, cookies.
they talk about their subjects, and that next year Andrew will be out in Germany due to his degree, and he will be able to see his cousin again, and why is he telling Neil this, of all people.
Neil is a very good listener. he's even better at asking questions that make Andrew have to think about an answer.
they keep talking, and they exchange numbers, to keep talking. to keep each other from slipping away.
they share cigarettes, and secrets, and their feud turns into something much more scary. it turns into a relationship.

Pairing: Tom Holland x Reader

Warnings: swearing, otherwise only fluff!
Word Count: 1,8k cute words
Tumblr media
It has been fairly difficult adjusting to the Los Angeles lifestyle, to say the least. Everything was so loud and bright, and the time difference was horrendous.
Los Angeles was nine hours behind your usual time zone; you haven’t even been here for a week and your classes have already started in full force. Even though the courses were so interesting and your fellow students were really nice, you just were so tired and barely found the motivation to smile at other people and exchange phone numbers.
Which was the reason why you were staggering into the nearest coffee shop after your first class of film history, inhaling the smell of freshly ground coffee beans. You stood in line to order as your eyes scanned the display of baked goods, contemplating whether you should pick up a cookie with your coffee.
“Hi, welcome to Yo Jo Coffee, what can I get ya?”
The greeting pulled you from your thoughts and you smiled tiredly at the cheery barista.
“Hey, can I get a large mocha and uh…” you trailed off, biting your lip as you were trying to pick between the cookies. “A double chocolate cookie please,” you decided and fished your wallet out.
“A mocha and a double chocolate cookie coming right up. Name?” the barista asked as her sharpie hovered over the side of a coffee cup.
“Y/N.”
“That’ll be six dollars and 41 cents,” the barista told you and you waved your credit card around, sticking it into the EC cash terminal to pay. As you were handed the cookie in a small paper bag, you moved to the side of the counter to wait for your coffee.
Juggling your cookie in one and your phone in the other hand, you stuffed your wallet back into your backpack, you looked around in the busy coffee shop.
Warm sunlight streamed through the windows and you fingered at the hem of your shirt, glancing down at your chest where your camera was usually hanging off your neck. Emphasis on usually. You were in such a rush in the morning, you forgot to grab the camera.
You broke off a half from the cookie and took a bite, wondering if you should try to capture a few pictures with your phone, when your name was called. You whirled around and smiled at the barista who prepared your coffee, your hand curling around the warm coffee cup.
“Thanks!” you called over your shoulder as you turned to leave, but before you could even take a sip from your mocha, you collided with someone, sending your cup flying and spilling the hot beverage all over you and the person you bumped into.
“Son of a bitch!” you cursed as the scalding fluid soaked your t shirt and most of your bare legs. Now you were really glad that you forgot to take your camera with you, you didn’t even want to imagine having to try to replace your camera. “Shit!” you heard from the other person and you looked up to see a brown haired guy you bumped into. You couldn’t quiet see his face, because he was looking down at his white t shirt. The white t shirt that was stained with brown blotches from your mocha.
“I am so sorry!” you said quickly and grabbed some tissues, starting to pat the other person down. “That’s quiet alright love, I wasn’t looking where I was going either,” he chuckled with a thick English accent and you furrowed a brow.
“You’re English,” you noted pleasantly surprised at the change from the usual American accent and looked up, finally catching a glimpse of his face. Your hands stilled as you see a face in front of you that has been plastered all over the movie posters, his brown hair tucked under a black baseball cap
“You’re Tom Holland,” you blurted out and Tom grinned boyishly at you. “Why yes, I am. Do you mind?” he asked and gestured towards his torso, where your hands were resting.
“Oh, yeah, sorry!” your cheeks tinged pink and you pulled your hands off of him, handing him a few tissues.
“Thanks,” he smiled at you and started dabbing at the stains, before grimacing and giving up. A barista, lugging a bucket and a mop behind him, gave you a dirty look as he started mopping up the puddle on the floor.
“Sorry!” you squawked and picked your empty coffee cup up from the floor before tossing it in the trash can, looking at it longingly.
“Come on, go order another one. My treat,” Tom said to you, noticing your expression. You turn your eyes back to him and he nodded in the direction of the counter, which made you shake your head quickly. “No, you don’t have to! I was the one who bumped into you, I should be the one buying you coffee,” you protested, which only made him chuckle.
“I insist. I am picking up coffees for my friends anyway, what’s one more?” Tom said and you eyed him before giving in, nodding.
“Fine. I guess you don’t get treated for a coffee from a famous actor every day,” you mumbled and he laughed, walking up to the counter.
“Hi, I’ll have two iced coffees, an americano and…” he trailed off, looking in your direction. “A mocha.” You added, tucking your hair behind your ear, while you watched Tom pay, before following him to the end of the counter.
“So, what do you usually do besides dumping coffee down other people’s shirts?” he asked you curiously.
“I am really sorry about that,” you said again, ducking your head. “I uh, just started at LA film school.”
Tom laughed a genuine laugh, his eyes sparkling with amusement. “I am just messing with you, love, it’s not a big deal. So, film school, huh? What are you there for?”
“Cinematography. I am really into making videos and uh, I guess photography,” you told him with a small smile.
“Oh that’s sick. You seem to have the same interests as my younger brother Harry. Can I see some of your stuff?”
You raised your eyebrows in surprise at his interest in you, before nodding, pleased. You liked sharing your work with other people, getting various opinions from different people. Art always affected people differently and you liked watching their reaction.
“Uh, yeah sure. I mainly shoot with my camera and I forgot to grab it when I left in the morning, so I just have a couple pictures on my phone that I can show you,” you reached for your phone and swiped to your gallery to show Tom some of your pictures.
“I took most of them back home, I haven’t been in LA that long, and I am swamped with classes so I didn’t really have the time to take a day off to take pictures,” you explained to him while he peered into your phone screen.
You had noticed that he was leaning over your shoulder to look at your pictures, and even though he wasn’t the tallest guy, you were still quiet shorter than him. His cheek brushed yours gently and you swallowed thickly, turning to look at him.
His face was only a few inches away from yours and you could see the faint freckles that were speckled across his cheeks.
“Your photos are really good,” he said softly and you stared at him, your lips slightly parted, before you cleared your throat and turned away with flushed cheeks. “Thanks,” you mumbled and tucked your hair behind your ear.
“I am not the best photographer, can you give me some pointers?” he asked and you look at him amusedly.
“I could try,” you chuckled and he lifted his phone with a grin. “Okay then, look away and act like I am not here, yeah?” Tom instructed you, making you laugh, before doing as you’re told. You can hear a few clicks of the phone as Tom snapped pictures of you, trying your hardest to strike a natural pose.
“I am pretty sure there are a few good ones,” he said proudly as he lowered his phone, swiping through the pictures with you leaning over his shoulder.
“Yeah, they’re not so bad,” you complimented him. Tom managed to capture you with a soft smile, the sun streaming on your face, giving you a golden glow. It was a rather good picture, you had to admit.
“We’ll make a photographer out of you yet.”
Tom smirked at you proudly, pocketing his phone. “I am just that talented.”
“Oh please,” you snorted and rolled your eyes good naturedly. “I got an order for Tom!” the barista called out and Tom lifted his hand, walking over to the counter. You watched his back as he fumbled around with the coffees for quite a while.
“You need any help?” you asked with a grin, your arms crossed.
“No no, I am all good love,” he called over his shoulder, handing the barista a pen before he turned around to you, four coffee cups in a carrier in his hand.
“Here,” Tom said, handing you your coffee.
“Thanks,” you smiled softly, taking a big gulp while the two of you walked out of the coffee shop.
“Well, I guess this is it,” you sighed as you stood outside the doors. Tom chuckled and nodded gesturing to two boys standing by the sidewalk.
“Yeah, my friends are waiting for me and their coffees,” he told you and you nodded. “I gotta get back to class, too,” you said slowly, waiting. You weren’t sure what you were expecting, maybe him giving you his number.
But when he waved at you with a friendly smile, and a “See you around, Y/N.” you realized this was probably your first and last time meeting Tom Holland. With a wave of your hand, you turned on your heel and walked the other way, your cheeks burning.
It was a dream, thinking Tom Holland, out of all people, would give you his phone number after one friendly conversation. He probably met hundreds of people a day, you were merely a friendly face in the mass, you thought bitterly as you sipped on your coffee, heading to your lecture for Digital Editing I.
“Hey, thanks for saving me a seat,” you said to Jane, a friendly girl you’ve met in class.
“Yeah, no worries,” she told you with a smile as you sat down. She eyed your coffee cup before grinning.
“Already picking up guys at coffee shops, huh?” she teased and you looked at her in confusion before turning the coffee cup in your hands, a smile spreading on your face. On the white paper cup, Tom had scribbled his phone number with a black marker, the number adorned with a wide smiley.
“I guess I am,” you chuckled sheepishly, already grabbing your phone. As the lights dimmed and the professor started the lecture, you were typing away on your phone.
Y/N: writing your phone number on my cup was a pretty risky move. What would you have done if I hadn’t seen it?
Your smile widened as your message’s status quickly changed from delivered to read, the ellipses popping up, before disappearing and then reappearing.
Tom: I guess we’ll never find out 😉

The Sprudge Guide To Edinburgh, Scotland
Coorie (ku:ri) is the Scottish art of living happy. It used to mean something akin to snuggle—coorie in, coorie down—but in the last couple of years it’s developed into a style of aesthetics and living. It’s not just about candles and coffee. Coorie is about taking comfort and energy from both the wild landscapes of Scotland and the cheerful interiors that inspire cozy togetherness. You might have experienced something like coorie if you’ve ever walked into your best friend’s living room or your favorite coffee shop and immediately felt welcomed and loved.
While traveling around Scotland last fall, I searched high and low for the best coffee I could find, the places that made us want to coorie down with loved ones, a book, and coffee. The local coffee haven is Edinburgh. Here, coffee shops sprout up like mushrooms after a good rain. In the center of the city, it’s unlikely you’ll walk a block without spotting at least one. In the last few years, the local scene has begun shifting more towards specialty coffee with a focus on top quality and good service. We’ve rounded up our top eleven coorie shops to help you get around the city without getting caught in the rain.
This guide is meant to be used in conjunction with Edinburgh cafes previously featured on Sprudge.
Artisan Roast
Artisan Roast is a welcoming, homey spot that feels worlds away from the central tourists hubs of Edinburgh. Here the roasters care deeply about their coffee, and tucked among plants, art, and knick-knacks are colorful flavor wheels and descriptions of the current coffees they’re roasting. Bags of coffee are displayed prominently and the bar is visually open, inviting everyone into the space.
When I visited Artisan, customers from the neighborhood and tourists from all over were making themselves at home in the front tables by the picture window and their comfortable back living room-style sitting area. When you visit, look closely at your surroundings, because hidden among the usual coffee shop trappings and home-like decor is a collection of funky wall art, a gold-framed photo of Morgan Freeman who reminds everyone to hydrate, and a cheeky promise “from” JK Rowling to never write there.
Artisan Roast has multiple locations in Edinburgh. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Baba Budan
Baba Budan has the kind of bubbly atmosphere that comes from baristas who are having fun behind the bar. The space is cheery too: high ceilings, sleek wood, and skinny lights pair well with their coffee to brighten up even the darkest winter afternoon. Named for the 16th century Sufi saint who is said to have introduced coffee to India, Baba Budan is a continued celebration of the spread of that beverage. The community table is a good space to work, and the whole cafe is a great place to meet up with a friend. The baristas were brewing up a Salvadoran coffee from Girls Who Grind on drip, along with espresso from Workshop. Rotating roasters include Square Mile, The Barn, Coffee Collective, and Dark Arts Coffee. If you’re feeling a little jittery from caffeine already, they have a selection of food using seasonal ingredients. It’s all made in-house.
Baba Budan is located at Arch 12, 17 East Market Street, Edinburgh. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Black Medicine
If you’re trying to drink coffee in the cafe where JK Rowling first wrote Harry Potter, Black Medicine is the closest you’re going to get. It stands where Nicolson’s used to, which is where Rowling wrote most of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. (Later books were written at Elephant House, but despite claims to be “the birthplace” of Potter, they didn’t open until Philosopher’s Stone was almost published.) Today, Black Medicine is a bustling coffee shop serving up good brews, bagels, and high energy. The baristas are an upbeat and friendly group, even when there’s a chaotic line. Their menu of milk-based drinks is reliably good, and espresso is served with a ginger cookie to make your coffee break just that bit more exciting. The bohemian decor and excitable environment is conducive to any creative who finds people-watching inspiring, and you’ll find writers camped out with laptops everywhere.
If you care about the environment (and don’t you?), you’ll be happy to know Black Medicine has experimented with using steel straws for cold drinks, has completely banned drinking from takeaway coffee cups inside, and offers a 10% discount if you bring your own mug.
Black Medicine is located at 2 Nicolson St, Edinburgh. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Brew Lab Coffee
True to its name, Brew Lab Coffee has an underground bunker laboratory feel that makes it a favorite of students. The rooms are laid out like a rabbit’s warren and packed full of young millennials writing, studying, and talking. There’s more exposed brick than you can shake a fist at, and the decor is focused on the scientific, including a menu that visually mimics the element squares of the periodic table. The focus here is on coffee: equipment is top of the line and the baristas are clearly extremely knowledgeable about the drinks they’re serving. Brewed coffee itself is not a rarity in Edinburgh, but the pour-over bar in central view for everyone is. Service includes drinks brought to the table (if you’ve found one) and friendly baristas. V60s are brewed into carafes and served on trays; flat whites show up with perfectly symmetrical rosettas.
Though it’s one of Edinburgh’s more spacious specialty cafes, popularity and proximity to the University of Edinburgh means finding a place to sit can be a challenge. If you can, try to snag one of the arm chairs at the back and settle in. When you’re done with caffeine for the day, Brew Lab also serves beer, wine, and cocktails.
Brew Lab Coffee is located at 6-8 S College St, Edinburgh. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Cairngorm Coffee
Behind the bar in Cairngorm read the words “Coffee and grilled cheese.” Generous sandwiches are constructed by the staff, and the coziness of this childhood favorite meal perfectly matches the coziness of Cairngorm. The ceiling is hung with burlap coffee sacks, and the natural wood and forest color palette evokes the eastern Highlands mountain range it’s named for. A snowboard, a skateboard, and skis hang on the walls to bring mountain adventure inside, or you can pick up an AeroPress and bag of this micro-roaster’s coffee to take on your next outdoor escape. When I dropped by, Cairngorm’s baristas were brewing up an excellent selection of Five Elephant coffee and their own Central American selection. They served up what was, hands down, the best flat white I had in Edinburgh. Attention to service is in everything Cairngorm does: tea was served with a timer to ensure it wasn’t over-steeped, newspapers were available for reading, and tablets set into bar seating were available to browse their website.
Find Cairngorm by descending some stairs from the main level of Frederick Street. The small patio outside is aces when the weather is great, or cozy up inside.
Cairngorm Coffee has multiple locations in Edinburgh. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Castello Coffee
Just a block off of the Princes Street Gardens and the main tram line, Castello Coffee waits to supply you with coffee and food to fuel up. The space is clean and bright, and framed art features prominently on the walls. Clearly named for Edinburgh Castle nearby, this shop serves up an Americano made with Allpress Espresso that’s fit for a monarch and delicious hot chocolates for everyone else. The breakfast and lunch soup options are great, as well. Friendly baristas are behind the bar and the bustling energy patrons bring in and out of the shop is the perfect pick-me-up to accompany the coffee when you need one.
If you’re out playing tourist or shopping nearby, Castello is a convenient and reliably good shop to drop in on. Grab a seat at the counter facing the window to watch people stream by in this busy neighborhood or enjoy their wide patio seating under umbrellas to protect you from the elements.
Castello Coffee has multiple locations in Edinburgh. Follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Cult Espresso
Tucked away on a small road close to the University of Edinburgh is wee gem Cult Espresso. This long narrow shop has a sapphire blue facade that makes it stand brightly out from the rest of the store fronts on the street, and the front door promises coffee, brunch, and good times—indeed, the service is amazing and the energy in the shop is cheerful and welcoming. When I visited I had a delicious long black and a good long chat with the baristas about the coffee scenes in the US and Scotland, what makes Cult special, and how excited they were about the coffee they were serving that day. As a group of self-proclaimed “coffee nerds,” Cult is constantly curating seasonal single-origin coffees from the UK and Europe, and they’re truly dedicated to making sure each cup is delicious.
Cult Espresso may not be an actual cult, but I could come to be (almost) as dedicated to it as a real one. Drop by the shop for their ritual brunch and coffee combo, and don’t forget to snag some of their branded swag on the way out.
Cult Espresso is located at 104 Buccleuch St, Edinburgh. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Fortitude Coffee
More than any other, Fortitude Coffee feels like a barista’s coffee shop. It retains the appearance of a converted rowhouse and is a peaceful background for great coffee, friendly baristas, and a community vibe. I sat by the windows and enjoyed a juicy pour-over roasted by Fortitude and perused the simple food menu. When I visited, they were quick to talk up the other coffee shops on the Disloyal 7 card, as well as recommend other must-try places around Edinburgh. They host the occasional cupping with their full lineup of coffees, and recently co-hosted a Meet the Roaster event with Edinburgh Coffee Society, so if you’re just visiting, check with the baristas to see if there’s an event coming up. Though still a relatively young scene, Fortitude is proof of how great a city’s coffee network becomes when everyone in it cares about the same main goals: delicious beverages and open community.
On a busy day, Fortitude is the perfect tranquil spot to relax, chat about coffee, and grab a bite to eat. Their full wall of retail coffee and coffee equipment is a great source for whatever your coffee-loving heart needs.
Fortitude Coffee is located at 3C York Pl, Edinburgh. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Lowdown
Literally low—down a flight of stairs—Lowdown is a minimalist shop. It’s a peaceful place to get away from the bustle of the main road, and has an airy feel to the decor and art. If you’re looking for a quieter place than Black Medicine to get work done, Lowdown is going to be your best bet for a distraction-free environment—the baristas are focused on careful, precise brewing. The coffee served and sold at Lowdown comes from all over Europe, including the delicious balanced shot of Ethiopian coffee from Colonna that was on drank when I stopped by. Similar to Artisan, Lowdown’s espresso bar is open and visible to guests, which invites an easy engagement that the baristas welcome.
The pastry case was full of beautiful pastries, including several cake options that are always the perfect pairing with any coffee for a good mid-morning snack. Bring a friend to take a break from shopping or sightseeing, or hunker down here with a good book. Lowdown is the perfect place to pass an afternoon with a cup of coffee.
Lowdown is located at 40 George St, Edinburgh. Follow them on Twitter and Instagram.
Machina
The coffee aesthetic is strong with this one. Above the bar hangs a black metal industrial light fixture from which a portafilter, a pitcher, and other various coffee implements hang from to float over the space. The walls are clean and white, and the tables are modernist sturdy wood and black metal. In Machina, several shelves are dedicated to different retail options; if you’re looking for equipment Machina seems to have the largest selection in Edinburgh.
