Apparently there really was a Sir Thomas Lipton who founded Lipton's Tea. Here he is with the crew of the Shamrock IV at Morse's Dry Dock, Brooklyn, in preparation for the 1920 America's Cup race. (He lost.)

Yesterday, they broke the mainsheet traveller mid-race. The team lost two races, but still didn't retire from the competition. They then started working to fix it, late into the night and this morning they went back to fight for a title that they could have (and probably would have) already won.
And they OWNED the waters in a brilliant race and moved on to the finals.
What a team!

So at what point do they cease being 'boats' and become low-flying planes?

This Day in History: America's Cup
At about this time in 1851, the New York Yacht Club’s schooner, America, races and defeats fifteen yachts of the Royal Yacht Squadron. Did the Americans forget that they were supposed to lose?!? The New York club was then still relatively new, whereas the British one was older and more prestigious.
Yet again, Americans began as the underdog—and emerged victorious!
That 1851 race laid the foundation for the international racing competition today known as the America’s Cup. In modern times, hundreds of millions of dollars are spent by those striving to win, but that first race in 1851 set the stage for everything that was to follow.

Well.
Glory to Cuben fiber, I suppose.
Still, the foils and hi-tech take confirm to be more an issue than anything. I had my preferences, and they've been confirmed during these finals.
#America's Cup#Louis Vuitton Cup#I miss the winch operators - it was definitely much funnier to watch than cyclors hidden below deck#I had my hesitation when they switched from single hulls to catamarans‚ but Idk#I also watched a few training and sailed in the same events of some old AC yatchs (Shosholoosa) and they were incredible boats#but the difference was really made by the crew#Idk it felt like the experience and the wind were much more influencing factors#again‚ this is just me yapping about my preferences#sounding like an old man who yells at clouds probably
