non zero one

Theatrical group non zero one launched their first collaborative project with The Other Art Fair in April 2014 at Ambika P3. Located outside the fair, 'Untitled (audio with pen)' challenged the 'curious' ones to break the social protocol of viewing art and do the unthinkable.

"We are always trying to make work that feels like a conversation – where it feels like ‘I’ matter as much as the next person, and that I, as the participant, can have choice, control, and a voice in the work. So it’s difficult sometimes even to call it theatre, as many people would argue that one of the defining characteristics of theatre is a separation between performer and audience; a lot of the time it feels like ‘participants’ are fulfilling both roles in the work." There is something slightly 90's dance scene about sculpture made from lasers, but Anthony McCalls latest works at Wesminters Ambika P3 manage to transcend this tech reference to become something utterly spatial and dream like. Entitled 'Vertical Works' the 3 triple storey-height laser beams for slowly undulating inhabitable cones. The shifting beams vary the level of the enclosures and it is hard to resist the urge to only cross the threshold when an appropriately sized 'door' appears. For something made of light they display an insistence toward solidity, that enables you to feel a strange dissolution of physical self when you cross the particles of light. The sharp but gentle planes of light inspire an architectural yearning for a material that could display the same level of elegance and 'lightness'. Once inside the cone and staring toward the light source the smoke wafting amongst the light creates an ethereal trance that immediately transports you to a place of imagination and wonder, to thinking of something above and beyond the concrete reality of the big warehouse space in central London in which you actually stand.
