Brandy, Jean, and Amber Klark (The To Do List)

Brandy spends the summer before she goes to college trying to have as many sexual experiences as possible, checking each one off her "To Do List" (building up to losing her virginity), but when she sees the penis of the boy she picked to check "give a handjob to" off the list, she's confused and asks her older sister Amber for advice, because "it has weird extra skin" and "doesn't look like it did in health class." Amber thinks it's weird, but still has experience with foreskin. She asks Brandy if his parents are hippies, then begrudgingly explains to her "what you do with the pig in a blanket."

The next morning, after the deed has been done, Brandy asks her mother Jean why some boys aren't circumcised, and Jean tells her that she actually thinks boys shouldn't be circumcised at all (despite having a circumcised husband), because as long as the foreskin is kept clean, an uncircumcised penis is more pleasurable. Her argument wins Brandy over, but Amber is disgusted by the whole thing.

365 Day Movie Challenge (2017) - #209: The To Do List (2013) - dir. Maggie Carey (52 Films by Women 2017: #16)

Writer/director Maggie Carey made her feature filmmaking debut with The To Do List, a raunchy comedy set in 1993 that follows an eighteen-year-old girl, Brandy Klark (Aubrey Plaza), who is determined to turn the summer before she starts college into an sexual odyssey. After a lifetime of concentration on purely intellectual activities, Brandy experiences lust for the first time when she gets drunk and makes out with hunky Rusty Waters (Scott Porter) at a graduation party. Realizing that the extent of her erotic history is the time she briefly had a boyfriend in the ninth grade (French kissing was their limit), Brandy decides to create a “to do list” of all the sexual acts she believes she needs to be familiar with – homework she has to complete in order to be prepared for college – culminating in sex with Rusty.

While The To Do List mines a lot of comedy out of the situations that Brandy finds herself in with the boys in her hometown, particularly in scenes related to her summer job as a lifeguard at the local pool, the film also makes many excellent points about the pressures that young women (and men) find themselves facing with regard to carnal knowledge. Brandy discovers not only her interest in guys but also in herself, learning how to be more comfortable with her own body and desires. On this journey she has help from her best friends, Fiona (Alia Shawkat) and Wendy (Sarah Steele), Willy the pool manager (Bill Hader, who is married to the film’s director), her older sister Amber (Rachel Bilson) and her mom (Connie Britton), who has her own complicated relationship with Brandy’s dad (Clark Gregg), a judge with a serious case of sexual repression.

Brandy’s summertime conquests include Van (Andy Samberg), Duffy (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) and Derrick (Donald Glover), but her most ardent suitor is one of her closest friends from high school, Cameron (Johnny Simmons). Cameron makes his feelings for Brandy known, but it takes time for Brandy to figure out her own readiness for a relationship, which is another part of the film’s exploration of maturity and social expectations. Aubrey Plaza is clearly the film’s MVP, but Johnny Simmons’ performance, which incorporates some great comic timing and slapstick scenarios, was a nice surprise. I highly recommend The To Do List, not just as a fun summer sex comedy but as a fresh and insightful perspective on what it means to grow up as a young woman in American society.
