It is, and I want to take a moment to focus on its durability. Now I admit, I am not the most careful person when it comes to my equipment. That’s why, when I managed to knock over my tripod not once but twice, with the M50 Mk II on top of it, I almost wound up on blood pressure meds.

Both times I thought I was going to scoop up a camera with some extreme damage. Maybe a broken viewfinder or a smashed touch screen.

Well, I am happy to report that my Canon M50 Mk II doesn’t have a scratch on it. The lenses aren’t cracked or damaged, and the display is clear and sharp. The body of the camera looks like it was just taken out of the box.

There are really only two possibilities for why this is: either I’m lucky (and I certainly need to be more careful with my equipment) or, maybe the M50 Mk II is a pretty durable unit for even the most buttery of fingers.

After a few weeks using the M50 MK II, I can honestly say I have only a couple of complaints. First is the cropped image in 4K. While this camera is touted as a 4K camera and perfectly capable of recording in 4K, the sensor will dump a large portion of its field of view. This isn’t really a problem for me, as I don’t like shooting in 4K anyway. Even when I am creating content, I prefer to shoot at 24 FPS in 1080p full HD. Footage shot at 24 FPS has that cinematic look that I adore, and I can use the autofocus to make sure all of my shots are effortlessly tack sharp.

Second, on this list is the Canon iOS app. I hate it. It’s buggy, it’s clunky, it crashes often, and it constantly makes me reset the Wi-Fi settings of the camera to use my phone as a wireless display. The app drives me absolutely insane, and if any Canon app developers are reading—shame on you.

Last on the list is the digital viewfinder. While it works well as a viewfinder, the sensor next to the viewfinder might give me an aneurysm. REFLECTIONS ON WORKING FROM HOME PT1: TWO OPPOSING REVELATIONS

I'm still learning a lot about distance working (Building Ori and the Will of the Wisps with 80 People Working from Home).

I HAVE GOOD INTERPERSONAL SKILLS

I want to, and probably already do, believe that distance-working can work. But I took a trip down to Auckland last week and got more curation work done in half an hour of networking then I did through a week of emailing.

I know it probably goes without saying, but in the interest of creating a genuine discussion (not just an echo chamber for an agenda - that I share too):

there are certain activities that are definitely much easier to do in high density environments and,

there are also some interpersonal skills, that unfortunately I have, that aren't as powerful without face-to-face contact.

I happened to be in a situation where both of those criteria were met and if those - more introverted people - hadn't come out to the networking event I would never have connected them to the opportunity.

My first revelation occurred when I thought "To get more games for this event in April I'll need to do an announcement at AKL Indies." but when I did the announcement I got ZERO bites. So I put on that winning smile and suit of infectious exuberance and "worked the room". In half an hour I had almost 10 leads and locked in all the games over the next few days. It’s hard to attribute concrete results to amorphous activities, but this is partly what I was being hired for. I took that for granted until that night.

ORGANIZED ITINERARY ACHIEVED #FEELSGOODDUDE

At a more-meta-level, I ended the trip with the overwhelming feeling that working from Ruakaka can, and might just, work. I managed to line up multiple meetings and even a paid open-mic hosting gig, and - that very same night - had an unforgettable night jamming with some old friends. This was revelation number two. It takes about 2-3 hours of work spread over a couple of weeks to line everything up like this, which I hope to get down a bit with practice, but it’s worth it for the amount of work I managed to churn through in a very short time.

JUGGLING BEING DAYCARE ALSO

Then, two days ago, my partner went back to work and I looked after little one-and-a-half for the day. I was running on about 20% efficiency all day and wasn’t able to get in to a flow state with any long tasks (when I put them down I did housework instead of work work) but it was still a relatively productive day. A lot of my time was spent setting up my office so I can look after 1.5 without them destroying anything or harming themselves.

SPATIAL DESIGN FOR GENERAL GOODNESS

I also managed to rethink my workspace to increase the amount of music I can weave in to down time while not loosing a place to paper prototype.

That, coupled with my Repertoire (working title) practice cards have been far more effective that I ever thought has added to my positivity.

I DON’T MONEY

I also just got paid for my first big contract taking some of the pressure off mortgage and bill payments. Now my biggest concern is accounting. Dealing with tax, paying other contractors. I am completely lost in that department and I don’t have enough income just yet to pay an accountant.

HEALTHY LIVING HABITS

I’m also graaaaaaaaaadually, getting in to the flow of physically and mentally healthier living habits: more sleep, better eating, food prep, serving my family etc. No real exercise yet but hockey is about to start up again and I can’t wait. I don’t even care that we are in the worst team in the competition. I just love playing. So there’s something to look forward to.

Also TOOL was profoundly amazing. I think seeing them is part of the reason I have so much motivation right now.

BROADCASTING

The unpublished podcast I started with my friends seems to have been a hit with those involved and desire to do another one is high. This may also potentially splinter off in to another podcast opportunity.

I’ve also started using OBS to test out some broadcast techniques. I’m still very amateur but I’ve been using it to:

discuss projects: recording video analyses on existing products to share with team mates,

teaching my daughter reading and math: using video games with an added layer based on her school curriculum and me walking through them with her (this will need several of it’s own posts to explain)

Setting up my musical equipment I’ve taking one step closer to confirming my suspicion that the first piece of new equipment I’m going to need to buy is a cheap mixer. My levels are all over the place.

OTHER PROJECTS

My role-playing game for kids companion project, We Make Camp (working title), had taken a back seat for a few weeks but I’m meeting my ‘player’ test subjects again this weekend and I’m going to hopefully do some body-storming with their father to start working on the GM testing regime.

The geo-loc game for ARA Journey’s has officially started. I’ll be working on that a lot today.

My work with HeiHei is pretty much over. Just some loose ends to tie up.

I have to quote a workshop today. Although I don’t want to teach anymore, it’s a workshop that A: I can do in my sleep and B: probably my favourite workshop out of all those I’ve ever run. So we’ll see how that goes.

CONCLUSION

There are obviously countless other factors I could discuss regarding my first month working from home, and ultimately this is really a journal for my own thoughts, but this feels like a good place to stop.

Finally my power meter from Stryd has arrived. Now I’m able to monitor my training through power measurement, which has long been established in cycling. The trend towards intensity control in ambitious endurance sports has already been eliminated in recent years from the heart rate control by means of heart rate zones, derived from the maximum heart rate or the heart rate reserve (maximum heart rate - resting heart rate), as these are unfortunately influenced by many factors, e.g. fatigue level/ regeneration status, emotional state, stress, ingestion of meals and caffeinated drinks, etc. and may vary greatly. For example, if your heart rate is higher than normal during a workout, you may be slowing down and running the risk of missing the targeted muscular stimulus. What is rather incidental for amateur runners, with running motives away from a performance claim or a specific objective such as weight reduction, is highly undesirable in competitive sports due to the need for maximum exercise time efficiency.

Through spiroergometric diagnostics, the intensity control of heart rate zones has gradually changed to speed zones. These are derived from the course of oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide release under load, as well as the maximum oxygen uptake. According to the current state of research, these stress parameters are not subject to as many disturbances as the heart rate and give the athletes a higher degree of certainty to reach the targeted goals in training and competition. The most common unit in practice is the pace in minutes / kilometers (min./km). On flat tracks that works very well in my experience. However, if the running tracks are in predominantly hilly terrain, controlled running to pace is almost impossible or requires a high level of experience. If this is missing, only the view of the heart rate remains. Very unsatisfactory!

Whether the whole thing in the practical application also works as reliable as I wish, I will report here in the blog. Now, first of all, I have to collect and analyze experiences in the form of data and to determine the right conclusions for my training and the value or reliability of the device for my own.

The first test was today in nice weather on a flat track around the Decksteiner Weier, from the German Sport University Cologne to the “Geißbockheim”, training center of the 1.FC Cologne and back.

Endlich ist mein Powermeter von Stryd angekommen. Nun kann ich mein Training durch die Messung der erbrachten Leistung steuern, was sich insbesondere im Radsport schon längst etabliert hat. Der Trend zur Intensitätssteuerung im ambitionierten Ausdauersport ging in den letzten Jahren ohnehin schon von der Herzfrequenzsteuerung mittels Herzfrequenzzonen, abgeleitet von der maximalen Herzfrequenz oder der Herzfrequenzreserve (maximale Herzfrequenz - Ruheherzfrequenz) weg, da diese leider durch viele Einflussfaktoren, z.B. den Belastungs-/Regenerationsstatus, den emotionalen Zustand, Stress, die Einnahme von Mahlzeiten und koffeinhaltigen Getränken, etc. starken Schwankungen unterliegen kann. Ist die Herzfrequenz während eines Training beispielsweise höher als gewöhnlich, reduziert man ggf. die Geschwindigkeit und läuft Gefahr, den anvisierten muskulären Reiz zu verfehlen. Was für Hobbyläufer, mit Laufmotiven abseits eines Leistungsanspruches oder einer konkreten Zielsetzung wie Gewichtsreduktion eher nebensächlich ist, ist im Leistungssport aufgrund des Bedarfes an maximaler Trainingszeiteffizienz, hochgradig unerwünscht.

Durch spiroergometrische Diagnostiken hat sich nach und nach die Intensitätssteuerung von Herzfrequenzzonen zu Geschwindigkeitszonen gewandelt. Abgeleitet werden diese aus dem Verlauf der Sauerstoffaufnahme und Kohlendioxidabgabe unter Belastung, sowie der maximalen Sauerstoffaufnahme. Nach heutigem Stand der Forschung unterliegen diese Belastungsparameter nicht so vielen Störeinflüssen wie die Herzfrequenz, was den Athleten/innen eine höhere Sicherheit gibt, die angepeilten Ziele in Training und Wettkampf zu erreichen Die gängigste Einheit in der praktischen Anwendung der Geschwindigkeitszonen bildet das Lauftempo (Pace) in Minuten/Kilometer (min./km).

Auf flachen Strecken funktioniert das meiner Erfahrung nach auch sehr gut. Befinden sich die Laufstrecken jedoch in überwiegend hügeligem Terrain, ist ein gesteuertes Laufen nach Pace sehr schwierig und erfordert sehr, sehr viel Erfahrung. Fehlt diese, bleibt doch wieder nur der Blick auf die Herzfrequenz. Sehr unbefriedigend!

Die Leistung (Power) in Watt, resultierend aus dem Quotienten Arbeit durch Zeit bzw. dem Produkt aus Masse x Beschleunigung x Geschwindigkeit, ist von der Herzfrequenz unabhängig. Die Powerzonen in Watt müssen lediglich mit den Ergebnissen meiner Laufbandspiroergometrie übereingebracht werden. Ob das alles in der praktischen Anwendung auch so zuverlässig funktioniert, wie ich es mir erhoffe, werde ich hier im Blog berichten.

Jetzt gilt es zunächst, Erfahrungen in Form von Daten zu sammeln, diese zu analysieren und die richtigen Schlüsse für mein Training und den Wert bzw. die Zuverlässigkeit des Gerätes für mich zu bestimmen.

Den ersten Test gab es heute bei herrlichem Wetter auf flacher Strecke rund um den Decksteiner Weiher, von der Deutschen Sporthochschule Köln bis zum Geißbockheim, Trainingszentrum des 1.FC Köln und zurück.

Peter Sallis was best known for playing Norman Clegg in the long-running BBC Sitcom Last of the Summer Wine, a part he played from the series debut in 1973 until the final story in 2010, appearing in every one of the 295 episodes. In later life, he was famous as the voice of Wallace, the eccentric inventor in the Aardman Animations series of films. Sallis appeared in the 1967 Doctor Who story The Ice Warriors, playing Penley, the rebel scientist who helped the Second Doctor defeat the Martian menace. He was due to return to the series in 1983 to play Striker in the fifth Doctor story Enlightenment but when industrial action delayed filming he was no longer available and Keith Barron took the role. Peter Sallis was born on 1 February 1921 in Twickenham, Middlesex, England. After attending Minchenden Grammar School in North London, Sallis went to work in a bank. After the outbreak of World War II he joined the RAF. He failed to get into aircrew because he had a serum albumin disorder and he was told he might black out at high altitudes. He became a wireless mechanic instead and went on to teach radio procedures at RAF Cranwell. Sallis started as an amateur actor during his four years with the RAF when one of his students offered him the lead in an amateur production. His success in the role caused him to resolve to become an actor after the war, and so he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, making his first professional appearance on the London stage in 1946. He appeared in many British films in the 1950's and 60's such as Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, Doctor in Love, The Curse of the Werewolf, The V.I.P.s, Charlie Bubbles, Scream and Scream Again, Taste the Blood of Dracula, Wuthering Heights, The Incredible Sarah and The Day of the Triffids. Other roles followed including an episode of The Persuaders and the BBC comedy series The Culture Vultures In 1973 Sallis was cast in a one-off pilot for Comedy Playhouse entitled The Last of the Summer Wine, as the unobtrusive lover of a quiet life, Norman Clegg. The pilot was successful and the BBC commissioned a series, and it became the world's longest running comedy series, and the role he was best known for. In the 1980's he started to get a reputation for voice work and in 1989 he first voiced the character of Wallace in the short film A Grand Day Out. The film won a BAFTA award and was followed by the Oscar-winning films The Wrong Trousers in 1993 and A Close Shave in 1995. Sallis was awarded the OBE in the 2007 Birthday Honours for services to Drama Sallis died peacefully, with his family by his side, at the Denville Hall nursing home in Northwood, London, on 2 June 2017. Young Champs Take Center Stage at APA Junior Championships

LAKE SAINT LOUIS, MO (July 26, 2017) — A record number of aspiring young APA members from across North America made their way to Davenport, Iowa in early-July for the APA Junior Championships.

After four-days of having fun, making new friends from across the country and playing their hearts out on the pool table, four new champions were crowned in each tier of the Junior Championships.

In the finals of the Green Tier (Skill Levels 1-2), Kaleb Frazier of Jackson, Miss., defeated Madison Glenn of Lawton, Okla. Glenn finished Runner-up. Gianluca Hackembruch of Ontario, Canada, and Maile Cook of Sedgewickville, Mo., tied for 3rd Place in the Green Tier which featured the largest number of competitors in this year’s event with 120 participants.

In the finals of the newly added Red Tier (Skill Level 3), Kyle Dodd of Cape Girardeau, Mo., defeated Treyton Weber of Mitchellville, Iowa. Weber finished Runner-up. April Czarnecki of Urbandale, Iowa, and Deekin Smith of Lebanon, Ind., tied for 3rd Place in the Red Tier which had 82 participants.

In the finals of the White Tier (Skill Levels 4-5), Hayden Hill of Cordova, Ill., defeated Hayden Sheeler of Ankeny, Iowa. Sheeler finished Runner-up. Cameron McBride of Fenton, Mo., and Beck Matthews of Louisville, Ky., tied for 3rd Place in the White Tier which had 58 participants.

In the finals of the Black Tier (Skill Levels 6-9), Matthew Franzke of Melbourne, Fla., defeated Chase Stumfoll of Independence, Mo. Stumfoll finished as Runner-up. The Black Tier, featuring the highest skilled players, included 31 competitors. Tying for 3rd Place in the Black Tier were Kenneth Walters of Matthews, Mo., and Timmy Bly of Decatur, Ill.

Overall, nearly 300 players competed in one of the four 9-Ball skill level tiers July 13 – July 16 at Sharky’s Billiards.

Champions and top finishers each took home trophies in addition to Samsung Galaxy Tablets for the champions, JBL Waterproof Bluetooth Speakers for Runners-up and 3rd Place finishers received Quadcopter Drones.

The four-day event also included a Junior/Adult Doubles event, recognition for Outstanding Academic Achievements and a special exhibition and autograph signing by Florian “Venom” Kohler.

Stage and screen actor best known for his role in the TV series The Jewel in the Crown

The only unexpected thing about the wonderful actor Tim Pigott-Smith, who has died aged 70, was that he never played Iago or, indeed, Richard III. Having marked out a special line in sadistic villainy as Ronald Merrick in his career-defining, Bafta award-winning performance in The Jewel in the Crown (1984), Granada TVs adaptation for ITV of Paul Scotts Raj Quartet novels, he built a portfolio of characters both good and bad who were invariably presented with layers of technical accomplishment and emotional complexity.

He emerged as a genuine leading actor in Shakespeare, contemporary plays by Michael Frayn in Frayns Benefactors (1984) he was a malicious, Iago-like journalist undermining a neighbouring college chums ambitions as an architect and Stephen Poliakoff, American classics by Eugene ONeill and Edward Albee, and as a go-to screen embodiment of high-ranking police officers and politicians, usually served with a twist of lemon and a side order of menace and sarcasm.

He played a highly respectable King Lear at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in 2011, but that performance was eclipsed, three years later, by his subtle, affecting and principled turn in the title role of Mike Bartletts King Charles III (soon to be seen in a television version) at the Almeida, in the West End and on Broadway, for which he received nominations in both the Olivier and Tony awards. The play, written in Shakespearean iambics, was set in a futuristic limbo, before the coronation, when Charles refuses to grant his royal assent to a Labour prime ministers press regulation bill.

The interregnum cliffhanger quality to the show was ideal for Pigott-Smiths ability to simultaneously project the spine and the jelly of a character, and he brilliantly suggested an accurate portrait of the future king without cheapening his portrayal of him. Although not primarily a physical actor, like Laurence Olivier, he was aware of his attributes, once saying that the camera does something to my eyes, particularly on my left side in profile, something to do with the eye being quite low and being able to see some white underneath the pupil. It was this physical accident, not necessarily any skill, he modestly maintained, which gave him a menacing look on film and television, as if I am thinking more than one thing.

Born in Rugby, Tim was the only child of Harry Pigott-Smith, a journalist, and his wife Margaret (nee Goodman), a keen amateur actor, and was educated at Wyggeston boys school in Leicester and when his father was appointed to the editorship of the Herald in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1962 King Edward VI grammar school, where Shakespeare was a pupil. Attending the Royal Shakespeare theatre, he was transfixed by John Barton and Peter Halls Wars of the Roses production, and the actors: Peggy Ashcroft, with whom he would one day appear in The Jewel in the Crown, Ian Holm and David Warner. He took a parttime job in the RSCs paint shop.

At Bristol University he gained a degree in English, French and drama (1967), and at the Bristol Old Vic theatre school he graduated from the training course (1969) alongside Jeremy Irons and Christopher Biggins as acting stage managers in the Bristol Old Vic company. He joined the Prospect touring company as Balthazar in Much Ado with John Neville and Sylvia Syms and then as the Player King and, later, Laertes to Ian McKellens febrile Hamlet. Back with the RSC he played Posthumus in Bartons fine 1974 production of Cymbeline and Dr Watson in William Gillettes Sherlock Holmes, opposite John Woods definitive detective, at the Aldwych and on Broadway. He further established himself in repertory at Birmingham, Cambridge and Nottingham.

He was busy in television from 1970, appearing in two Doctor Who sagas, The Claws of Axos (1971) and The Masque of Mandragora (1976), as well as in the first of the BBCs adaptations of Elizabeth Gaskells North and South (1975, as Frederick Hale; in the second, in 2004, he played Hales father, Richard). His first films were Jack Golds Aces High (1976), adapted by Howard Barker from RC Sherriffs Journeys End, and Tony Richardsons Joseph Andrews (1977). His first Shakespeare leads were in the BBCs Shakespeare series Angelo in Measure for Measure and Hotspur in Henry IV Part One (both 1979).

A long association with Hall began at the National Theatre in 1987, when he played a coruscating half-hour interrogation scene with Maggie Smith in Halls production of Coming in to Land by Poliakoff; he was a Dostoeyvskyan immigration officer, Smith a desperate, and despairing, Polish immigrant. In Halls farewell season of Shakespeares late romances in 1988, he led the company alongside Michael Bryant and Eileen Atkins, playing a clenched and possessed Leontes in The Winters Tale; an Italianate, jesting Iachimo in Cymbeline; and a gloriously drunken Trinculo in The Tempest (he played Prospero for Adrian Noble at the Theatre Royal, Bath, in 2012).

The Falstaff on television when he played Hotspur was Anthony Quayle, and he succeeded this great actor, whom he much admired as director of the touring Compass Theatre in 1989, playing Brutus in Julius Caesar and Salieri in Peter Shaffers Amadeus. When the Arts Council cut funding to Compass, he extended his rogues gallery with a sulphurous Rochester in Fay Weldons adaptation of Jane Eyre, on tour and at the Playhouse, in a phantasmagorical production by Helena Kaut-Howson, with Alexandra Mathie as Jane (1993); and, back at the NT, as a magnificent, treacherous Leicester in Howard Davies remarkable revival of Schillers Mary Stuart (1996) with Isabelle Huppert as a sensual Mary and Anna Massey a bitterly prim Elizabeth.

In that same National season, he teamed with Simon Callow (as Face) and Josie Lawrence (as Doll Common) in a co-production by Bill Alexander for the Birmingham Rep of Ben Jonsons trickstering, two-faced masterpiece The Alchemist; he was a comically pious Subtle in sackcloth and sandals. He pulled himself together as a wryly observant Larry Slade in one of the landmark productions of the past 20 years: ONeills The Iceman Cometh at the Almeida in 1998, transferring to the Old Vic, and to Broadway, with Kevin Spacey as the salesman Hickey revisiting the last chance saloon where Pigott-Smith propped up the bar with Rupert Graves, Mark Strong and Clarke Peters in Davies great production.

He and Davies combined again, with Helen Mirren and Eve Best, in a monumental NT revival (designed by Bob Crowley) of ONeills epic Mourning Becomes Electra in 2003. Pigott-Smith recycled his ersatz Agamemnon role of the returning civil war hero, Ezra Mannon, as the real Agamemnon, fiercely sarcastic while measuring a dollop of decency against weasel expediency, in Euripides Hecuba at the Donmar Warehouse in 2004. In complete contrast, his controlled but hilarious Bishop of Lax in Douglas Hodges 2006 revival of Philip Kings See How They Run at the Duchess suggested he had done far too little outright comedy in his career.

Television roles after The Jewel in the Crown included the titular chief constable, John Stafford, in The Chief (1990-93) and the much sleazier chief inspector Frank Vickers in The Vice (2001-03). On film, he showed up in The Remains of the Day (1993); Paul Greengrasss Bloody Sunday (2002), a harrowing documentary reconstruction of the protest and massacre in Derry in 1972; as Pegasus, head of MI7, in Rowan Atkinsons Johnny English (2003) and the foreign secretary in the Bond movie Quantum of Solace (2008).

In the last decade of his life he achieved an amazing roster of stage performances, including a superb Henry Higgins, directed by Hall, in Pygmalion (2008); the avuncular, golf-loving entrepreneur Ken Lay in Lucy Prebbles extraordinary Enron (2009), a play that proved there was no business like big business; the placatory Tobias, opposite Penelope Wilton, in Albees A Delicate Balance at the Almeida in 2011; and the humiliated George, opposite his Hecuba, Clare Higgins, in Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf, at Bath.

At the start of this year he was appointed OBE. His last television appearance came as Mr Sniggs, the junior dean of Scone College, in Evelyn Waughs Decline and Fall, starring Jack Whitehall. He had been due to open as Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman in Northampton prior to a long tour.

Pigott-Smith was a keen sportsman, loved the countryside and wrote four short books, three of them for children.

In 1972 he married the actor Pamela Miles. She survives him, along with their son, Tom, a violinist, and two grandchildren, Imogen and Gabriel.
