For a long time after, Yasmin sat in the bedroom, eyes fixed on the little bit of window not covered by the curtain. The pistol lay, empty and safety on, in her hand, almost like an afterthought. She hardly seemed to be breathing, which gave the room an eerie silence that Keiran's presence disrupted. She didn't react. She didn't turn around. She just sat and watched, unblinking. Unmoving. Unfeeling.

"Babe," he said softly. Nothing. "The officers said--"

"And you believe them?" It was the first time she'd spoken in--god, hours, probably. Her voice was rough from disuse. Made rougher by her offense at the idea that Keiran listened to a blessed the feds said. "I never took you for stupid."

He didn't answer that, though she heard his sharp exhalation. Outside, their neighbor with the yappy dog walked out and let the dog piss right on their mailbox. Bitch. Yasmin's fingers flexed against the pistol. When Keiran spoke again, he was closer. On the other edge of the bed, maybe. She couldn't look. It would mean turning away from her sliver of window. "They've increased surveillance. They are trailing the car we saw. We're--it's going to be okay."

His voice was so gentle that it made her sick. She couldn't stand it. It didn't belong with her, here, in this place. In this time, where the only way to keep them both alive was to hold her pistol, watch the window, and regret that she hadn't brought anything bigger with her.

He belonged with that other woman. The one she had to pretend to be, who smiled and made nice. She could have this man with his gentle, coaxing voice and his soft mannerisms and his trust in the fucking feds. She was welcome to it. All of it. Yasmin would keep her pistol and her watch and keep them both alive.

He continued to approach her slowly and when he was close enough to enter her periphery, she turned her head away. She couldn't see the window, but she didn't have to see him. At least, not until he came all the way too her, right up next to her, the side of his body lightly brushing the side of hers.

When he spoke, this time, it was only a whisper. The quietest sound. "Yasmin." It was that--the sound of her real name, even in the barest whisper--that startled her. His hands came to hers and she let him lift the gun out of her grasp without any fight.

Despite herself, a small sob escaped. It was hardly more than a hiccup, but it was enough. His arms came around her, pressing her gently but firmly to his chest, and the dam broke. She didn't weep so much as shake and sob. He cooed and petted her hair nonetheless, whispering sweet nothings into her ear.

"I don't trust them to protect you," she whispered against his shirt, hoping he could only feel the breath but not hear the words.

He rubbed her back. "It's okay. We're okay."

"It scared me. When I thought they were here, it scared me."

He just shushed her, tracing circles with his palm on her back.

He couldn't hear her. Or he wasn't listening to specifics. Either way, it made her next words safe. "I can't let them get you."

His hands stopped so abruptly, she knew she'd been wrong. He put his hands on her shoulders and pushed her away so he could look her in the eye. So she would have to look him in the eye, after that. "We're going to take care of each other. I won't let them get you, either."

She watched him after he said it, as his eyes seemed to be trying to drill into her. She watched, and blinked away tears as they tried to well up, and sniffled when her lungs wouldn't bring air in right. Twice, she opened her mouth, but she couldn't find the words.

After the second attempt, he slid his hand up to cup her cheek. "Let me take care of you, amali." My heart, he'd told her. She pressed her lips together as her eyes welled up again and gave a small nod. She would let him take care of her, for today.

Long Term RV Parks or Tiny Houses?

Found a reclaimed wood tiny house for the price of $ 75,000 in Luling, Tx. Too expensive for our budget and not nice at all. Then we decided to visit a Park model company. Here we went inside several of the park models and the best layouts for our needs were the smaller ones with 400 sq.ft similar to tiny houses. A couple of the ones we loved, one was $ 59,000 and the other was $ 64,000, plus delivery.

But honestly, looking back upon all the places we've visited doing our homework for when the time comes, we are inclined towards living in a small apartment or an RV. In a small apartment, 1 bedroom, we would have achieved the same square foot we needed as a tiny house. We do not have to make a large investment, just pay rent and utilities. No garbage or patio maintenance, no building maintenance, plus we can move out after the contract is terminated.

Another choice, if we were to purchase an RV, the investment would be much smaller than getting into a tiny house. Why? We would not have to buy a lot or land, would not have to have a septic tank installed, which we know is optional, but we would want one. A septic tank, power and water facilities would make it a better resale value if we wanted to move, plus make life easier for the tiny house.

Always keeping in mind that one of the best advantages of owning a tiny house on wheels is that you will be able to relocate whenever you need to. But we can do this also with the RV and much easier because all you do is rent the spot.

Another way to look at it is, if we own a house, tiny house, shipping container or park model, we would always have to make arrangements for extra expenses. On the other hand, the extra expenses for an RV would be just the spot where you are parked plus electricity. I know there are off the grid tiny homes, solar panels, composite suites and many more options to have less expenses, but we would prefer to have the same comforts of big living with the touch of a small home.

Currently, the monthly expenses are approximately $ 600 for a 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom house (Wi-Fi, land line, cable TV, water, power, patio maintenance, taxes, insurance, garbage disposal), plus the mortgage. On the other hand, if we decide to live in a long term RV park resort area, the monthly rental for parking would be about $ 640 with a lake view, plus electricity. But think about it … Someone living in the RV resort park told us their electricity monthly bill was $ 40 and he had the A / C on 24/7.

Not bad, the long term RV park is a resort and has hot tub, pool area, fire pits, 2 BBQ and outdoor kitchen areas, gazebos, free dog wash area, pet walking area, concrete parking areas, gated, security, mailboxes, garage recreational area, laundry, gym, rec area, business office, free cable, free Wi-Fi, additional parking and all the convenience stores nearby. For us it would be like being on vacation every single day! We would just need to buy the RV with the square footage we need. Got to or want to move? Take it away!

One more small living alternative has not been out ruled. What about a houseboat? We have yet to do some searching for this one. This is one thought that we can not get rid of. We want to look into visiting some real estate houseboats and find out what the pricing, monthly fees for being on water and the pros and cons of living on a body of water. I guess it all depends where it is located. Anyone reading this article owns a houseboat and can give us some input? We would certainly appreciate it!

It’s been a long week! I’ve had a migraine off and on, and I ended up with some sort of mini-flu or cold for a couple of days. The weather here is like spring, legitimate spring. It’s been warm for a while now but it’s so freaking nice out that it’s utterly bizarre, we’re usually just getting out of the cold rain storms this time of year. That being said I’m going to start back taking long walks a few times a week…I might be devastated at the steady decline of Earth’s wellbeing but I’m going to at least enjoy the mild heat before it tries to kill me this summer.
