BritBox has settled in for the holidays with several "Festive Specials" (as they're called in the U.K.) populating the calendar for the back half of the month. The specials will begin arriving on December 17, 2024, starting with the new Sister Boniface Mysteries Christmas episode. However, the season's highlight will come at Christmas and after, as Beyond Paradise and Death in Paradise debut their Christmas specials. Of the two, BritBox got first dibs with Beyond Paradise, which will stream its one-hour special edition in the U.S. on Christmas Day and then follow on the BBC on Friday, December 27. Death in Paradise will start on the BBC, arriving on Sunday, December 22, and then debuting on BritBox in the U.S. on December 27. Death in Paradise has the more significant plot development, as the series' fifth lead detective will be introduced in the special, but Beyond Paradise looks like the more interesting mystery.
However, star Kris Marshall might not remember the plot details. When asked about the 2024 special, he admitted that the show is so ahead currently that they'd just finished filming next year's holiday installment, Beyond Paradise's Festive Special for 2025. (He then realized his error, "I may have dropped a spoiler that I’m not supposed to." Welp.) However, that reveal also bodes well for a fourth-season renewal since these specials tend to be the first episode of the new season (just separated off by a few weeks).
The first images for the special are now out, and Marshall will definitely have his hands full for the holiday.
Kris Marshall as DI Humphrey and Sally Bretton as Martha Lloyd in 'Beyond Paradise'
Here's the Christmas Special synopsis:
When a widower starts seeing the ghost of his late wife, DI Humphrey Goodman and the team are called in to investigate. DS Esther Williams is deeply skeptical, but Humphrey is more than happy to dive into his first haunting. It's Christmas, after all, and who doesn’t like a festive ghost story?
The special stars Kris Marshall as DI Humphrey Goodman, Sally Bretton as Martha Lloyd, Isaac Vincent-Norgate as their new foster son, Ryan, and Barbara Flynn as Martha's mum Anne Lloyd. Despite threats to the station, it also seems very likely the core ensemble of mystery solvers will also return with Zahra Ahmadi as DS Esther Williams, Melina Sinadinou as her daughter, Zoe Williams, Felicity Montagu as Margo Martins, Dylan Llewellyn as PC Kelby Hartford and Jade Harrison as big boss CS Charlie Woods.
Guest stars for this year's one-hour episode include Amalia Vitale (Big Mood), Mark Heap (The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin), Tamla Kari (The Ipcress File), Chizzy Akudolu (Criminal Record), Austin Taylor (Doc Martin), Simon Nagra (D.I. Ray), Rosalind Adler (The Nevers), Sami Amber (Dalgliesh), and Seann Walsh (Bad Move).
Ian Jarvis penned the episode, Sandy Johnson directed it, and Lindsay Hughes produced it. Series creator Tony Jordan executive produced with Tim Key and Belinda Campbell for Red Planet Pictures, Danielle Scott-Haughton for the BBC, and Stephen Nye and Robert Schildhouse for BritBox International.

DA Questions
Thanks for the tag, @bitchesofostwick ! I’m gonna tag @dirthara-mama @red-wardens @will-and-her-fandoms (and anyone else who wants to do this - tag me, yo)
01) favorite game of the series? DA2. The horniest, most punk rock, and least popular of the games
02) how did you discover Dragon Age? Round when Inquisition was about to come out, my friend was gonna play Origins again to refresh himself and made the mistake of letting me roll a character. Then he spent the rest of the game watching me play
03) how many times you’ve played the games? UHhhh I have no idea. I’ve probably finished the games twice each, but I’ve got a lot of unfinished plays
04) favorite race to play as? Probably human. Though I like the city elves a lot
05) favorite class? Warrior. I like hit things
06) do you play through the games differently or do you make the same decisions each time? I try to make different decisions. I’ve definitely played most of the romances. I also almost NEVER play a non-mage Hawke. I just like Hawke as a mage. And that way Carver lives so I get to see my son
07) go-to adventuring group? I switch it up a lot, but I like Alistair, Oghren, and Zevran; Fenris, Isabela, and Varric; Iron Bull, Cole and Dorian; Cassandra, Sera, and Vivienne
08) which of your characters did you put the most thought into? Halsa. That’s just cause she’s the first one, though. ((and also cause I love her the most))
09) favorite romance? That’s a good question. Dorian’s and Fenris’ are both very fucking good imo
10) have you read any of the comics/books? None except part of the godawful Orson Scott Card one. The comics are kind of expensive and my library system doesn’t have them
11) if you read them, which was your favorite book? Haven’t really read them. I should, though
12) favorite DLCs? Probably Awakening. I absolutely loved Jaws of Hakkon and The Descent, though. I have only played them once cause I sold my ps4, but I would love to play again
13) things that annoy you. The four billion little bullshit fetch quests and whatever in Inquisition
14) Orlais or Ferelden? Listen, I’m from the Midwest. Fantasy Ohio forever
15) templars or mages? As far as my characters, Halsa and Marian are vehemently against the Circle and the Chantry, Garrett is a moderate (read: coward) but defends the mages in Kirkwall, Jane allies with the Templars. If I were there, I’d side with the mages, but no one would ever put me in charge so I’m not sure that’s relevant
16) if you have multiple characters, are they in different/parallel universes or in the same one? I have two world states, which I’m working on fleshing out at the moment.
One has Halsa Tabris, Garrett Hawke, and Amalia Trevelyan (as well as a couple other OCs I haven’t named yet)
Two has a Warden Aeducan I don’t know that well yet, Marian Hawke, and Jane Trevelyan
17) what did you name your pets? (mabari, summoned animals, mounts, etc) Halsa’s dog is named Onion, Garrett’s is Annabelle (Beth named her), Marian’s is Ivan, Jane has a horse named Dirthamen (because she is a giant nerd), Amalia has a few outdoor cats, one of which is named Tidbit
18) have you installed any mods? Nah, I play on a ps3 like a peasant
19) did your Warden want to become a Grey Warden? Halsa did, sure. She was ready to prove herself. I don’t know a lot about my other Warden, but I know they definitely did Not.
20) hawke’s personality? Garrett’s straight purple Hawke - Charismatic and cocky, never takes anything seriously. He’s a soft-hearted people-pleaser, often pretty spineless.
Marian’s between blue and red. She’s well-mannered and diplomatic, but headstrong and fierce and not afraid to stab a bitch if it comes to that
21) did you make matching armor for your companions in Inquisition? Not rrreeallly, though I do always make sure they look hot
22) if your character(s) could go back in time to change one thing, what would they change? I’m gonna stick w the events of the games cause otherwise it’d get really messy: Halsa would be a little smarter about political maneuvering within the Landsmeet and as an Arlessa - Garrett would get involved in the mage/templar conflict way sooner and be less judgmental and more supportive of Anders and Merrill (tbh, boy’s got a lot of regrets) - Jane would set her intentions sooner with the Inquisition and not let Cassandra lead her for so long - Marian is kind of a no regerts kinda girl. She just doesn’t think that way
23) do you have any headcanons about your character(s) that go against canon? Oh yeah. The characters in my first world state are way more intertwined. Halsa spends time in Kirkwall, leaves with Anders, later joins the Inquisition. Garrett and Fenris join the Inquisition together. Halsa’s not looking for the cure bc it’s not in character for her. Amalia leaves the Circle and spends some time as Garrett’s sort of protégée before going to the Conclave.
There’s more about Jane but I haven’t gotten that far in her story so
24) are any of your character(s) based on someone? I mean, they’ve all got a lil bit of me in them. Halsa’s probably got the most me. I think about a couple friends of mine while writing both the Hawkes
25) who did you leave in the Fade? In game, I left Hawke on my first play through (how dare I) and Stroud on another? But idk I don’t like the way it’s set up very much so mine will be different in fiction
26) favorite mount? Ima keep it real w you, chief: I do not use the mounts. I’ll miss the banter!! Which is already kind of hard to trigger in dai?

Grand Duchess Olga Constantinovna of Russia 3 September [O.S. 22 August] 1851 – 18 June 1926
Olga was born at Pavlovsk Palace near Saint Petersburg on 3 September [O.S. 22 August] 1851. She was the second child and elder daughter of Grand Duke Constantine Nikolaievich and his wife, Grand Duchess Alexandra, a former princess of Saxe-Altenburg. Through her father, Olga was a granddaughter of Tsar Nicholas I, a niece of Tsar Alexander II and first cousin of Tsar Alexander III.
Her childhood was spent at her father's homes, including Pavlovsk Palace and estates in the Crimea. Her father was a younger brother of Alexander II, and her mother was considered one of the most intelligent and elegant women of the court. Olga was particularly close to her older brother, Nicholas, and was one of the few members of the imperial family to keep in touch with him after he was banished to Tashkent. As a child, Olga was described as a simple and chubby little girl with a broad face and big blue eyes. Unlike her younger sister, Vera, she had a calm temperament, but she was also extremely shy. For example, when interrogated by her tutors during lessons, she burst into tears and ran from the classroom.
In 1862, Grand Duke Constantine Nikolaievich was appointed viceroy of Russian Poland by his brother and moved to Warsaw with his wife and children. The stay in Poland proved difficult for the Grand Duke, who was the victim of a nationalist assassination attempt the day after his arrival in the Polish capital. Although Constantine embarked on a program of liberalization and re-instated Polish as an official language,[8] Polish nationalists agitating for reform were not appeased. Finally, an uprising in January 1863 and the radicalization of the separatists pushed the Tsar to recall his brother in August. Olga's difficult experiences in Poland marked her profoundly
The young King George I of Greece visited Russia in 1863 to thank Olga's uncle Tsar Alexander II for his support during George's election to the throne of Greece. Whilst there, George met the then twelve-year-old Olga for the first time. George visited Russia again in 1867 to meet with his sister Dagmar, who had married Tsarevitch Alexander (later Alexander III) the year before. He was determined to find a wife and the idea of an alliance with a Russian grand duchess, born into the Eastern Orthodox Church, appealed to him.
Olga fell in love with George, but she was nevertheless anxious and distraught at the thought of leaving Russia. Her father was initially reluctant to agree to their marriage, thinking that at the age of fifteen she was too young and, being close to his daughter, concerned by the distance between Greece and Russia. For her part, Grand Duchess Alexandra was much more enthusiastic than her husband and, when some members of the imperial family noted the extreme youth of her daughter, she replied that Olga would not always be as young. Eventually, it was decided that Olga and George would marry when she had reached her sixteenth birthday. Meanwhile, she would continue her schoolwork until her wedding day. Olga and George married at the chapel of the Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg on 27 October [O.S. 15 October] 1867. After five days of festivities, they spent a brief honeymoon at Ropsha, south-west of Saint Petersburg. Over the following twenty years, they had eight children
The Tsar told Olga "to love her new country twice more than her own", but she was ill-prepared for her new life. Aware of her youth, she chose to retain the services of her governess to continue her education. On arrival at Piraeus, Olga wore blue and white, the national colors of Greece, to the delight of the crowd. On the way to the capital, popular unrest was such that Olga, who was not accustomed to such demonstrations, was close to tears. Unable to speak Greek, and with little time for rest, she attended official functions over several days. Overwhelmed, Olga was found sobbing under a staircase cuddling her teddy bear a few days after her arrival in the kingdom while she was expected for a formal event. In less than a year, she learnt Greek and English. On the advice of her mother, she took an interest in the archeology and history of Greece to gain public support
Throughout their marriage, George I and Olga were a close-knit couple, and contrary to the prevailing custom spent much time with their children, who grew up in a warm family atmosphere. With age, however, George I argued with his sons and Olga lamented the quarrels that divided the family periodically. In private, Olga and George I conversed in German because it was the only language they both spoke at the time of their marriage. With their offspring, they spoke mainly English, although the children were required to speak Greek among themselves, and Prince Andrew refused to speak anything but Greek to his parents.
Olga was genuinely popular and was extensively involved in charity work. On arrival in Athens, her immediate patronages included the Amalieion orphanage founded by the previous queen consort Amalia of Oldenburg, and the Arsakeion school for girls located on University Boulevard. With her personal support and the support of wealthy donors, she built asylums for the terminally ill and for the elderly disabled, and a sanatorium for patients with consumption. She founded a society to help the poor, a kindergarten for the children of the poor, and a soup kitchen in Piraeus that doubled as a cooking school for poor girls that was later expanded into a weaving school for girls and elderly women in financial difficulty. She was patron of two military hospitals and endowed the Evangelismos (Annunciation) Hospital, Greece's largest, in downtown Athens. She built the Russian Hospital in Piraeus in memory of her daughter, Alexandra, who died in Moscow in 1891. Although aimed primarily at Russian sailors, the hospital was open to all seamen visiting Greece, with consultation fees set at the low rate of thirty lepta and medicines being free. Olga also supported the establishment and funding of hospitals during the conflicts between Greece and its neighbors, including the Greco-Turkish War of 1897 and the First Balkan War (1912–13). For their work for the wounded, Olga and her daughter-in-law Crown Princess Sophia were awarded the Royal Red Cross by Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom in December 1897. Before Olga's arrival in Greece, there were no separate prisons for women or the young, and she was instrumental in the establishment of a women's prison in the capital and, with the support of wealthy philanthropist George Averoff, one for juvenile delinquents.
Olga's final years were marked by ill health. Lameness restricted her to a wheelchair, and she stayed in Paris several times to undergo treatment for her eyes. Her poor eyesight caused George V much laughter when she mistook a statue of a naked Lady Godiva for one of Queen Victoria. Increasingly dependent, Olga finally settled with her youngest son, Prince Christopher, shortly after the death of his first wife, Princess Anastasia, in 1923.
Olga died on 18 June 1926 either at Christopher's Villa Anastasia in Rome, or at Pau, France. Despite republicanism in Greece, Olga was still held in high esteem and the republican government in Athens offered to pay for her funeral and repatriate her remains to Greece. Nonetheless, her children declined the offer, preferring to bury her in Italy beside her son, Constantine I, whose body Greece had refused to accept.
Her funeral was held on 22 June 1926 at the Orthodox Church in Rome and the next day she was laid to rest in the crypt of the Russian church in Florence. After the restoration of the Greek monarchy in 1935 she was re-interred at Tatoi on 17 November 1936. As much of her property had been confiscated by the Soviet Union and the Greek republican government, most of her estate comprised jewelry reported in The Times to be worth £100,000 (equivalent to more than £4,500,000 today). This was shared between her children and the children of Constantine I. Traumatized by the events of the Russian Revolution, Olga wished to sever all ties with the country in which her family had been massacred.
Before dying, she made her grandson, King George II, swear to repatriate the ashes of her daughter Princess Alexandra, buried in the Peter and Paul Cathedral in Saint Petersburg. Her wish was fulfilled in 1940 after his restoration to the Greek throne
