“You’re a sadist,” chuckled the young woman, giving him a playful nudge before she even realised it.

They both froze at that gesture, any trace of hilarity quickly wiped from their faces as they found themselves staring at each other.

The witch paled, opening and closing her mouth a couple of times before babbling a confused apology. Bloody hell, what was she thinking? L was not, he. Was. Not. Her friend! And he clearly hated physical contact, he showed it plenty! What was he going to do now? Would he get angry? Or would he burst into tears?

God, if I traumatised the most important detective on the planet Robards is going to kill me.

“And following that scenario, what if I survive? What if I decide to go home and act like nothing happened?” she objected.

L looked at her sideways. “Would you?”

Sophie shrugged. It wouldn't be like her, and she'd faced a war after all, but... she couldn't be sure how she'd react if death came so close to her again.

“Honestly, I'd erase your memory.” The witch found herself chocking on a biscuit, but L seemed not to care. “After all, it is your Ministry that is particularly... pressing on the subject of security, and having you here is the best I can do to ensure your safety”

Indeed, it was no secret that the London Aurors were a bit… stingy with foreign partnerships. She recalled the time in Burkina Faso when McLuhan had found himself having to report five times a day to Minister Shacklebolt himself, completely paranoid that he would disappear from under his nose in the investigation of abductions in the area.

Even though their resources were still meagre, years after the war, it still seemed to her that these measures were a tad excessive. The fact that McLuhan had actually been kidnapped and found five days later, grazing on grass with antelopes, was irrelevant: St. Mungo's had been extremely efficient, and the Auror had been back to normal in a couple of weeks. Sure, he still nibbled at the occasional notepad, but otherwise he was fit as a fiddle.

It went well, so well they offered everyone a round of beer. Then a second, and a third, and for the fourth one there was half the Department pressed between the tables of their favourite pub.

After all, that morning had been the culmination of almost two months of investigation, and a proper masterpiece of investigation.

“Levicorpus!”

Her partners were indeed very good investigators, first-class Aurors, people she entrusted with her life every day, with pride. She was proud of them, proud of their skills, their wit, their courage and their…  professionalism.

As the Auror Headquarters was torn to pieces for the third time in five years, Sophie Winchester was leaning against a wall with her arms folded, looking at the scene with a bored expression.

There was nothing new, moreover, in the way they were systematically destroying her desk. Even the round of betting between the Department colleagues, who were intent on exchanging handfuls of magic coins, was now a well-tried win-lose system.

Besides, she was too tired to get angry.

Invite Kira to take part in the investigation and become best friends?!" "Well, roughly. . . yes, that would be the long-term plan. Sharp as ever." The witch, astonished, toyed with the idea of planting something very sharp in the detective's skull. Like a kitchen knife. Or a katana. It would have been pretty scenic.

A detective of undefeated genius. An Auror of exceptional abilities. An endless amount of lies. The Wizarding World needs saving again.
