Non-Clay-Based Refractories
Non-clay refractories like the one described below are manufactured almost exclusively as bricks and pressed forms, although some materials of magnesite chrome and alumina are fused into molds. For such items the typical starting ingredients are carbonates or metal oxides such as magnesium, aluminum, and zirconium.
Basic refractories of these materials include magnesia, dolomite, chromium and combinations. Magnesia brick is made from the mineral type of magnesia (MgO), periclase. Periclase is produced either from magnesite (a magnesium carbonate, MgCO3), or from magnesium hydroxide (Mg[OH]2), which in turn comes from seawater or underground brine solutions. Magnesia bricks can be chemically bonded, pitch-bonded, burned, or burned, then impregnated with pitch.
Dolomite refractories derive their name from the dolomite ore from which they are made, a mixture of calcium and magnesium carbonates (CaCO3 · MgCO3). They must be impregnated with tar or pitch after burning, in order to avoid lime rehydration (CaO). Chrome brick is made of chromium ores, which are complex solid spinel type solutions (a series of oxide minerals like chromite and magnetite) and silicate gangue, or phases of impurity.
